Sometimes, we all just want to do something spontaneous and have some fun. One of the best ways to achieve this is to plan an impromptu trip, and get out there to explore the world. Of course, there are some risks that come with planning this kind of trip as you might not have much time to think it through properly.

In this post, I’m going to give you some of tips to help you get an impromptu trip right.

Be Flexible

If you have never been on an impromptu trip before, then the first thing you need to know is that you are going to need to be flexible. As you have not spent months planning this trip like you may have done in the past, you might not get that perfect hotel room or the flights that get you there at the time of day you would prefer.

It is important that you are as flexible as possible, and this will help you to have the perfect trip.

Set a Budget

If you are heading off on an impromptu trip, then you will probably not have had time to save up money for it either. This means that you’ll need to make sure that you are not overspending and that you have enough money to last the trip.

Try to set a travel budget that you can afford and don’t go over it too much. As you’ll be booking things last minute, it might cost a bit more. Try your best to stick to the budget and this should help you get it right.

Impromptu trips: scared to try 5 reasons to go now.

I embarked on my first impromptu trip in 2017 with a company that planned and curated surprise trips, and since then I’ve never looked back, embarking on spontaneous travel as and when I can.

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the routine.

Book your air tickets, secure accommodation, ask around for recommendations, plan your travel checklist, get onto the plane and race against time to tick off every box before going home.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against this travelling method.

In fact, I was that traveller. Spreadsheets were a part of my pre-trip routine, as I spent hours researching travel blogs and sites, and meticulously arranged my trip itineraries in a manner that left little to chance.  

As I continued to structure my travel experiences around such lists, I started to see just how limiting it started to be, and my first impromptu trip only further affirmed this.

I booked a trip on a whim after tendering my resignation to my then-company. Right after booking, they sent me an information pack but I chose to keep it for the day of my impromptu trip.

I discovered my destination only at the airport and got sent to an island I never knew existed – Koh Lanta, Thailand.

For what it’s worth, I had such a great time exploring that I even doubled the length of my trip.

Spending that one week on a remote (but extremely safe) island with no itinerary, no checklist and no expectations, I learnt that the best travel experiences come when you don’t plan for them to happen.

Now, here are 5 reasons why you need to ditch all that travel planning and go on an impromptu vacation:

5 Reasons To Take An Impromptu Trip Right Now!

1. you’ll interact more with the locals.

Sans checklist (and probably Google – but don’t cheat!), the next best way you can find out about what you can do at your destination would be to talk to the people around you!

Strike up a conversation with a local whether it’s on the plane there, while you’re in a queue, or anywhere really! If that’s too daunting, start off by speaking with the crew at your accommodation for some ideas.

I personally like to ask them where I can find their favourite local dish.

Not only might this score you an invite to hang with them, but you also pick up little insights that make for a more authentic travel experience, beyond touristy must-dos.

When I stayed in a guesthouse in Osaka, a question about where the best drinking spots in the area were, brought me to an authentic hole-in-the-wall bar full of Japanese salarymen.

Having chicken heart yakitori (Japanese meat skewers) over sake (a type of Japanese liquor) – you really can’t get any more local than that!

2. You Save Time (Planning) For Better Experiences

I bet that all of us have, at some point of time in our travel lives, been to a restaurant just because someone we know claimed that it was the best, or because it was oh-so-Instagrammable.

Well, you know what isn’t as gram-worthy? The snaking queue stretching across blocks would probably take up 2-3 hours of your precious travel time.

What I’ve come to realise is that most times someone’s must-try doesn’t always necessarily translate into the best experience for me.

Nowadays, I either pop into the first restaurant that catches my eye (or nose!) or if I see locals streaming in and out of it.

I’m proud to say that this has led to me some really affordable and hearty gems, surprising even my local friends, and the best part – no queue and barely any wait for your food!

3. Impromptu Trips Open You Up To New Experiences And Help You Embrace Spontaneity

With zero pre-trip research and thus no opportunity to second-guess any decisions, I found myself saying yes to things I normally wouldn’t have.

Such as riding a scooter for the first time ever, out 12 kilometres to a rustic seaside town, and then in search of a secret beach, hinted at in my Anywhr travelogue.

If I had my own way, I would have probably planned for pick-ups or charted out a route pre-trip that would have excluded the need to ride a scooter.

But when such plans don’t exist, and when your guesthouse owner says to take a scooter because, one, that’s what everyone does and, two, it’s the best way of getting around, you get on a scooter and do it anyway.  

4. On An Impromptu Trip, You Create Memories Unlike Anyone Else’s

When you rely less on a one-size-fits-all generic travel checklist, you’ll find yourself seeking out things that are more in line with your own interests, rather than doing something just because everyone says you ought to do it or for the sake of it.  

When I was in New Zealand , three-quarters of my bus unloaded at a Lord of the Rings filming site, Hobbiton , but I chose not to hop off.

Our driver asked those remaining if we fancied a short walk nearby. Since I loved hiking and I had to wait anyway, I said yes!

This supposedly-unremarkable short walk turned out to be one of the most picturesque moments of my trip!

In fact, some of those who had gone to Hobbiton said they wished they had gone with us instead because the site turned out so packed that their time there was mainly spent waiting around.

5. Going On An Impromptu Trip Is Less Stressful

Given how routine and structured most of our daily lives are, you’ll find not planning and just going on impromptu trips incredibly liberating.

Not only will you be less stressed without all that pre-trip research, but on your trip, you’ll likely feel less obligated to, for example, cut short your time at a museum that you were really starting to enjoy, just because you already pre-booked tickets to a play starting in half an hour’s time.

I get it – doing an impromptu trip without a plan can feel scary and seem reckless, spending that much money on a plane ticket, or using your limited vacation leave, and yet having no idea what to do as your plane takes off.

But you’ll notice that somehow, you will find things to do, places to eat, and sights you never thought you’d come across.

In fact, some days you might even wake up with no idea about how your day will pan out, but that’s perfectly alright because being in another country is already a great experience in itself.

You’ll soon realise that travel isn’t just about ticking off those boxes, but also being present where you are there and then.

It’s about taking in the new surroundings, the smells, the sounds, hearing conversations in a language foreign to you, and even just enjoying the weather outside, whichever season it may be. 

With all that in mind, it’s time to leave the checklists only for your groceries back home and venture into the unknown with only a spirit of exploration.

I’ve been taking road trips in the south for my entire life, crisscrossing across the southeast USA visiting cities, towns, national parks, beaches, marshes, and beyond.

And yet, even after all that time, there are still plenty of southern road trip routes on my wish list.

In order to give perspectives beyond my own, I asked several other travel bloggers to share their favorite road trips in the south, and the result is a road trip bucket list that would take even the most dedicated road-tripper years to complete!

From weeks-long deep south road trip itineraries to quick weekend getaways, these southeast US road trip ideas cover an enormous variety of landscapes and interests.

Quick Tips for Your Southeast USA Road Trip

Ideally, take your southern road trip in the spring or fall.

While you can technically take all of these southern USA road trips year-round, the south’s notoriously brutal summer means that it’s best to avoid the months of June, July, and August if you can (unless you plan to spend most of your time on the beach, of course).

Winter, depending on the location, can be gray and rainy, but can also be a joyous time to visit cities, towns, and mountains that see far less tourism in the winter (but don’t underestimate the possibility of snow in the mountains, either: it may be the south, but the Smokies still get snow!).

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your US south road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

Read the rental requirements carefully.

Especially make sure you know how many miles you’ve been allotted (or ideally, if they’re unlimited), if you need to return the car empty or full of fuel, what to do if the car breaks down, and what damages you’re liable for in the event of an accident.

Don’t underestimate the south’s national parks!

The wide-open spaces and epic landscapes of the American West are often the typical images conjured up when imagining the USA’s national parks–but the south has plenty to offer, as well!

In fact, Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee is the most-visited national park in the country, and its gorgeous vistas and jaw-dropping waterfalls are well worth exploring.

Other southern national parks to consider adding to your road trip through the south include Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Everglades National Park in South Florida, and Congaree National Park in South Carolina–just to name a few!

Make sure you pack the right gear.

From safety gear to snacks, a deep south road trip requires bringing the right tools along, whether you’re taking a short vacation, trying out van life, or something in between.

Don’t overextend yourself.

Exploring every nook and cranny of the US south is a project for a lifetime, not one trip!

As tempting as it is to add on additional driving to stop at just one more beach or small town, make sure that you leave enough time to thoroughly explore each destination rather than spending the entirety of your road trip driving from one spot to the next.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Scenic Byway

One of the best scenic coastal drives in the United States is the Gulf Coast Scenic Byway (US Highway 90 / Beach Boulevard) in  Coastal Mississippi , where for 11 glorious miles there is nothing between you and the soft sugar sand and Gulf of Mexico water.

The most awe-inspiring section of the Gulf Coast Scenic Byway is from Henderson Point Beach to the Port of Gulfport Mississippi.

Drive this portion, or this entire road trip, in either direction, but we suggest west to east because you are closer to the water.

Start this road trip after an overnight in Bay St Louis or New Orleans (55 miles away).

In Bay St Louis, fuel up at Mockingbird Cafe (try their pulled pork and grits) or Serious Bakery (superb chicken salad).

Drive across the iconic St. Louis Bay Bridge and your senses will activate and heighten with your first Gulf and sand view.

Stop as often as you want because parking is free!

The coastal drive continues through Gulfport and into Biloxi.

Visit the new Mississippi Aquarium, stroll the Biloxi Beach Boardwalk, and eat at White Pillars or The Blind Tiger.

After crossing the Biloxi Bay Bridge, make time to explore the wonderful small town of Ocean Springs.

Stroll the gorgeous oak-lined Washington Avenue, stop at Walter Anderson Museum of Art, and eat at Vestige.

Highway 90 continues through Pascagoula (Jimmy Buffett’s birthplace) and into Mobile, Alabama, where you can turn around and complete this classic deep south road trip again.

Driving Distance

Bay St Louis to Pascagoula is 50 miles. New Orleans to Pascagoula is 107 miles and it is another 35 miles to Mobile, Alabama.

Recommended Road Trip Length

You can drive this coastal scenic drive in a couple of hours but we suggest allowing three or more days to fully experience the spectacular sugar sand, seafood, sunsets, and small beach towns of Coastal Mississippi.

Alabama Black Belt Road Trip

A road trip through the Black Belt region of Alabama is one of the best southern USA road trips around.

Named for the dark fertile soil of the region, the Alabama Black Belt is made up of twenty-three states across central and south Alabama.

This part of Alabama is the place where significant law-changing history was made, where literary giants were born, and is home to some of the best food that can be found in the United States.

For first-time visitors or someone flying in, there’s no better way to start an Alabama southern road trip than by including the capital –  Montgomery.

Plan on visiting important civil rights sites and the renowned Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.

Next, drive west approximately fifty miles to Selma, Alabama on Highway 80.

This route is the same route as the important Selma to Montgomery march for voters’ rights that took place in 1965.

See the places that put this small town on the map and made it crucial in the civil rights movement.

Walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge, eat locally caught catfish, and sleep in a hotel that was built in 1837 . 

After saying a farewell to Selma, drive county backroads approximately seventy miles to the literary capital of the south.

As unbelievable as it may seem, Harper Lee – To Kill a Mockingbird and Truman Capote – Breakfast at Tiffany’s were childhood friends in the south.

They both grew up in Monroeville, Alabama – the next stop on this southern road trip. Take a walk around the charming downtown square to spot murals that pay tribute to these well-known books and authors.

From Monroeville, it’s easy to hop on Interstate-65 north to return to Montgomery or take the scenic route for a few more towns and sites on your southern road trip.

Driving Distance

This itinerary would be good for a weekend or long weekend.

Since the Alabama Black Belt is a rather large region there is an abundance of small towns and sites that can be added to a southern road trip.

Visitors could easily spend a week or two in the area.

Coastal Georgia and South Carolina Road Trip

One of the fabulous road trips in the southeastern USA travels along the historic coastal corridors of Georgia to South Carolina, finishing in Charleston.

From the Georgia border to Florida, the major artery is Hwy 95, you’ll pass through so many historic and recreational sites along the way to make this a few days or even a longer visit depending on how many places you want to see and experience.

Some of the cool and historic places to visit in Georgia include St. Marys and Cumberland Island, Brunswich and St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island , Tybee Island , and Savannah .

Places to explore around South Carolina’s southern coastline from Savannah include Hilton Head, Beaufort, Edisto Island, and Charleston.

Each of these areas caters to historic sites or recreation getaways that are fun to explore when you have more time to visit each area on this road trip.

Even though you can go directly on Hwy 95 from the Georgia border all the way to South Carolina, it’s the small detour expressways and backcountry roads that will give you a better insight into visiting some of these gems in the region.  

If you only have a few days or longer then the major cities of Savannah and Charleston are memorable cities to prioritize to experience the local lifestyles foods that you’ll enjoy on this southern road trip experience.

Savannah, with its historic squares, fabulous architecture, and historic district that remains intact includes so much to see, do and experience around the historic center of the city.

Charleston on the other hand is more compact and walkable with a tighter historic district to enjoy and explore on your own or with some tour operator sharing the main attractions to see in town.

It’s 107 miles to drive straight from Savannah to Charleston.

If you’re focusing on Savannah and Charleston, 5 days is a comfortable length for this USA southern road trip itinerary.

The Classic Blue Ridge Parkway Road Trip Route

The Blue Ridge Parkway, which stretches 469 miles from Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, is such an unimaginably epic USA road trip, that veterans almost envy people who are experiencing it for the first time.

There are a lot of reasons it’s the #1 most visited unit in the US National Park system (with more than 15 million annual visitors), including 200 jaw-dropping BRP overlooks that offer stunning Blue Ridge Mountain vistas and provide access to the region’s most incredible hiking trails, landmarks, mountain towns, and waterfalls.

Designed as part of FDR’s New Deal to protect American wilderness and provide jobs in the wake of the Great Depression, construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began back in 1935.

Most of the scenic route was completed by 1966, but the popular 8-mile stretch around the iconic Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina (including the engineering marvel known as the Linn Cove Viaduct) wasn’t finished until 1987.

The BRP is the longest linear park in the country, taking travelers through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests.

So naturally, there are a lot of exciting things to do along the way. 

At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River, with lots of challenging hiking trails and a relatively easy paved path to the observation platform at the summit.

Grandfather Mountain State Park is also home to epic hiking trails (including several with ladders to climb massive boulders), and the neighboring Grandfather Mountain attraction is home to the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, a small zoo featuring native North Carolina animals, and myriad picnic areas. 

Virginia’s Mabry Mill is the most photographed spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and one of the region’s many historical attractions.

There’s very little commercial development along the Parkway, with only a few hotels and resorts (including the historic Switzerland Inn in  Little Switzerland NC ,  and the Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford VA).

But part of the fun is exploring some of the charming little mountain towns along the way, including Cherokee, Blowing Rock, and Boone in NC, and Bedford, Lexington, and Waynesboro in VA.

You could drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway in as little as 15-16 hours if you wanted, but that would totally defeat the purpose.

Some people like to break it up into weekend getaways, basing themselves in a local town.

But you could also spend a week or two driving the entire route, spending nights in lots of little towns along the way.

Chattanooga, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina

Chattanooga is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains and located along the Tennessee River.

Drive the breathtaking scenic Newfound Gap Road to Cherokee, North Carolina. Jump out along the many turnouts along the way and enjoy the scenery. 

Once you reach Cherokee, explore the Oconaluftee Indian Village and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian.  Shop for some authentic Cherokee arts and crafts.

The drive from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina is 191 miles and takes 3 hrs 51 minutes if driving straight through. 

Since there is so much to do on this southern USA road trip, you will want to spend at least 5 days here in order to take in as much as you can along the way.

NOLA to Nashville Southern Road Trip Itinerary

You can take a riverboat dinner cruise on the Savannah River or enjoy a low country dinner at one of the best restaurants in Savannah .

And since Hilton Head is only 45-minutes from Savannah, you can stick around for a few hours in the morning and to Tybee Island before heading over to Hilton Head!

Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is a laid-back resort town offering beautiful beaches and tons of golf courses.

Additionally, Hilton Head is incredibly bike-friendly.

Head over to Hilton Head Outfitters, rent bicycles for the whole family, and go exploring!

And if you are a seafood lover, you’ll have tons of waterfront restaurant options!

A road trip from Virginia Beach, VA to  Hilton Head, SC  via Interstate-95 is approximately 589 miles.

If you do not want to stay overnight in Savannah, you can make the trip in seven and a half hours.

However, if you prefer slow travel and wish to explore Savannah, you should consider making this a two-day drive.

Gulf Coast Beach Road Trip from Alabama to Florida

One of the best-kept secrets in the South are the sugar-white sand beaches along the Gulf of Mexico from Alabama to the Florida panhandle.

If you have never heard of Dauphin Island, Alabama, it is a must-visit southern destination.

Take the ultimate beach road trip from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Pensacola, Florida!

Dauphin Island, Alabama, is a beautiful place to visit. The island is home to many different wildlife species, including sea turtles, and the scenery is simply stunning.

If you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature, Dauphin Island is the perfect spot. Plan to stay at least two days.

From Dauphin Island, take the ferry across Mobile Bay to Fort Morgan, where visitors can continue the road trip to Gulf Shores.

Be sure to visit Gulf State Park and enjoy the incredible beaches from Gulf Shores to Orange Beach! Plan at least two days in Gulf Shores.

Gulf Islands National Seashore in Fort Pickens is a popular tourist destination offering a variety of activities such as catching some sun on beaches, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and exploring the historic fort.

Camp at the  Fort Pickens Campground  for a few days to enjoy all the island offers.

From Gulf Shores, continue east into the Florida panhandle towards Pensacola.

A road trip along the southern coast of Alabama into the Florida panhandle makes for an incredible beach road trip any time of year.

We recommend taking about a week to enjoy this road trip in the US south.

This way, road trippers can enjoy each destination for two days.

Savannah, Georgia to Clearwater, Florida Road Trip

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches and fun in the sun, plan a short southern road trip route from Savannah to Clearwater.

Plan to start at dawn from Savannah on a Saturday so you can arrive by noon in  Clearwater, Florida .

Google Maps or Waze will offer you the choice of traveling down I-95 toward Orlando and then across to Tampa/St. Pete outposts.

Alternatively, you can drive through Jacksonville and then cut across the state via US-301 S and I-75 S.

The estimated time is 6 hours if you don’t hit bad traffic on I-95.

You will also have time to eat fried grouper at Clearwater Beach for lunch, then hit the Clearwater Aquarium for an afternoon adventure.

Dedicate the evening to drinking margaritas and watching the sunset.

You might want to watch the sunset (while sipping a cocktail) at Pier 60 on Saturday night or delay until Sunday because you will be exhausted from your early morning drive.

Clearwater is also a great place to settle while you plan day trips to Tampa, St. Pete, and Sarasota.

While you can easily make the drive in a day, it’s best to set aside a week for this US south road trip as you will lose two days to travel.

Florida’s Gulf Coast deserves a minimum five-day stay so you can experience different beaches.

Southeast USA Road Trip from Washington DC to Florida

One of the best road trips in the southeast US is from Washington, DC to  Anna Maria Island, Florida . 

If you want to break it up with overnights and stops, I recommend going from Washington DC to Raleigh, NC on Day 1.  On Day 2, drive from Raleigh, NC to Savannah, GA.  Then on Day 3, drive from Savannah, GA to Anna Maria Island, FL.

Starting in Washington, DC, where there is much to see from the Capitol to the Washington Monument to the Smithsonian Museums, you can begin heading on the road toward Virginia and the Carolinas. 

In Virginia, the historic college town of Williamsburg is well worth a visit. 

In addition to being a beautiful town, home to William and Mary College, it is also where you can step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg and learn a bit about American history. 

From here, head into North Carolina and stop in Raleigh if you plan to spend the night.

Then head into South Carolina, where a drive-through or stop in Charleston is a great thing to do. 

The historic and lavish architecture is well worth a look, and the southern hospitality and walk on the waterfront are worth it even just for a short visit. 

From here, continue into Georgia, where a stop in Savannah is a must. 

If you have a bit of time to spend in this southern city, the hop on hop off trolley, walking tours, and a 90-minute riverboat sightseeing cruise would be worth doing. 

This beautiful and historic city really is a gem on this road trip, so be sure to build in a bit of time, and even book a bed and breakfast for the night.  

Continue on from Georgia into northern Florida, where if you can stop in Jacksonville for a visit to the University of Florida or in St. Augustine for lunch or a walking tour of this beautiful and historic city. 

There is an old town part of St. Augustine well worth visiting, and depending on the time of day, is a great stop for a lunch. Continue on from St. Augustine to Anna Maria Island, Florida.

You may pass through Orlando and Tampa, which if you have time, may want to stop in one of these cities. 

While Orlando is home to many theme parks and activities, you won’t have time on this drive to do many of those unless you build in another day or two to your drive.

Instead, I suggest stopping in Tampa, where you will get to view this fantastic seaside city, where you can enjoy a cruise, walk around Ybor City, or grab a meal at the famous (and delicious) Columbia Restaurant. 

While you are also right at Clearwater Beach, you may want to save that beach visit for Anna Maria Island, just about an hours drive from Tampa, on the Gulf Coast, and renowned for its teal Caribbean-like water, white soft sand, quieter beaches, and home rentals perfect for a beach getaway. 

It’s the perfect destination to such a cultural and historic road trip, and one of the best road trips in the south USA.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina Road Trip

One of the best Southern USA road trips is driving through the Outer Banks. There are so many fun things to do in the Outer Banks  and its sweeping coastal scenery is gorgeous.

The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands off the North Carolina coast filled with beautiful beaches, lighthouses, and fun beach towns.

A great historic stop in the Outer Banks is at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

This is where the Wright brothers completed the first controlled flight in December of 1903.

There are a fun visitor’s center, some historical markers, and a replica of the first plane.

The Outer Banks is also home to the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. You can climb to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. There are 257 steps to the top.

The lighthouse and Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a great place to spend the afternoon. The beaches are beautiful and not crowded.

After spending time at Cape Hatteras, you can take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island.

There is another lighthouse on this smaller island, but it is not open to visitors.

There are, however, beautiful beaches making this island a fun spot to explore.

The distance from the northern town of Corolla through Hatteras, the southern point, is about 95 miles.

If you continue to the ferry to Ocracoke, the mileage is longer.

You can easily fill 4-5 days with fun activities during your Outer Banks road trip, and spend even more time in the area if you want to relax on the beach.

Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park

One of the best road trips in the southern US winds through Shenandoah National Park offering stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If you drive Skyline Drive straight through it only takes a little under 3 hours but there are so many hikes, overlooks, and small towns to stop and explore. This is the perfect road trip for outdoorsy people.

You can start at the Front Royal Entrance Station and on your first day hike to Compton Peak where you’ll find a gorgeous view as well as unique geological formations that resemble the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland .

In the afternoon, head out to the town of Luray where you can shop in the boutiques along Main Street and visit the famous Luray Caverns.

If you like to camp then stay the night in Mathews Arm Campground, otherwise rent a room at the Skyland Resort inside the park.

For day two you can fit in two hikes – Stony Man and Hawksbill – which both offer stunning mountain views and are 2 of the best hikes in Shenandoah .

Have lunch at Big Meadows and make sure you get the blackberry ice cream pie for dessert!

In the afternoon you can hike Dark Hollow Falls or just head into Elkton or Sperryville.

Visit Sperryville for wineries and Elkton for breweries. Tonight stay at the Lewis Mountain Cabins & Campground.

On the last day of the road trip, hike Doyles River Falls and Blackrock Summit.

Stop for lunch at Blue Mountain Brewery and check out some of the other Waynesboro breweries. Main Street in Waynesboro is also very quaint.

For many people, 3 days is enough to spend in Shenandoah National Park.

However, if you are very outdoorsy and love to hike and explore small towns then you can spend a week in the Shenandoah Valley.

Northwest Arkansas Road Trip Loop

Arkansas is an underrated state with a lot to offer for outdoor adventurers!

The state has beautiful state parks, incredible mountain biking trails, a uniquely historic national park, and much more.

The northwest portion of Arkansas is where you’ll find the most beautiful natural areas along with some fantastic cities. 

This road trip begins in Bentonville, a city known for mountain biking, modern art, and as the Walmart headquarters.

There are miles of mountain biking trails in parks around the city and trails range from beginner to advanced. 

Continue on from Bentonville to Buffalo National River, a beautiful river with epic canyon walls towering above it.

After the National River, enjoy hiking in the Ozark National Forest (the most famous hike is Whitaker Point) and take in the views at Mount Magazine and Mount Nebo. Mount Magazine is the highest point in the state. 

Be sure to not miss the most iconic state park in Arkansas: Petit Jean. This state park is a favorite of many and is home to a 95-foot waterfall, caves, and several unique rock formations. 

Spend some time in Little Rock for great food and interesting history. 

Things to do in Little Rock include visiting the Little Rock Central High School Museum, exploring the vibrant SOMA neighborhood, and hiking at Pinnacle Mountain. 

Finally, end your road trip with a visit to Arkansas’ only national park: Hot Springs.

Hot Springs National Park was a resort destination in the early 1900s and there are a couple of bathhouses still in operation today.

In addition to the spas, you can visit a brewery inside of a bathhouse and enjoy the views from the observation tower. 

A week is the minimum amount of time you’ll want to fully explore the cities and hiking destinations along the way.

Ideally, take 10 days or more to take your time and enjoy this underrated southern USA road trip itinerary.

Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast Road Trip

If you’re looking for an ideal year-round  road trip destination, Florida’s Gulf Coast  offers dreamy beaches, fantastic food, and some of America’s most (in)famous history!

Begin your road trip in Tampa, where you can spend 2 days exploring the city’s Cuban history in Ybor City and enjoy the amazing cuisine before heading south to Sarasota and Siesta Key.

Spend the next day in Sarasota admiring the mid-century architecture and visiting the Ringling Museum.

Shoppers will no doubt stay longer on St. Armand’s Circle, then head to Siesta Key later in the day to take in the new age vibes of the nightly drumming circle on the beach at sunset.

The next day, drive south to Casperson Beach in Venice and rent a “Florida snow shovel” for a few dollars to dig in the sand for prehistoric megalodon shark teeth.

Millions of them wash ashore every day and you just might find a big one to treasure!

Spend the night at Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island, one of Southwest Florida’s most historic towns before heading out the next morning for Fort Myers.

Situated where the Caloosahatchee River meets the Gulf of Mexico, the city of Fort Myers is worth a few days to explore the history and the beautiful beaches on Sanibel and Captiva.

Visit the summer homes of neighbors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose mansions are popular tourist attractions today.

The last stop on your road trip is Naples and Marco Island on the southwestern coast. This stunning region is known as the Paradise Coast and it’s easy to see why.

Spend your days on the soft white sand beaches, shopping at the luxury stores and dining downtown, or get out into the Everglades for some adventure.

It is 180 miles from Tampa to Marco Island.

Plan on 7-10 days for this southern road trip route.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore Drive: Chincoteague to Cape Charles

Roll down the windows and breathe in the salt-infused air as you make the 70-mile drive north to south from Chincoteague to Cape Charles.

Get ready to make stops for sandy beaches, ice cream shops, and verdant wetlands just right for a scenic paddle.

Start at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to miles of stroller-friendly hiking and biking trails.

The Chincoteague Lighthouse Trail is a must-visit to ogle the red-and-white striped Assateague Lighthouse.

Take a guided kayak tour or nature cruise across pristine coastal waterways with Assateague Explorer.

Keep your eyes open for wild ponies, as well as native wildlife, like sandhill cranes and eastern mud turtles, that call the wildlife refuge home.

Set Your Budget

Make an estimate of how much you want to spend including the tickets, hotel, food, and other recreational activities. Just stick with this budget plan and everything is going to be fine.

Choose a Destination

The next step is to choose a destination according to your budget. Before going anywhere especially far from your house, you need to make sure that the place is safe to travel.

Search well before choosing the destination. You can search for local deals, what attractions the destination has, whether they have the places you want to visit, the culture of that place, and the type of people you going to interact with. All these things will help you stay there comfortably, manage your budget easily, and above all, stay safe.

To avoid wasting your time on these things, you need to pack smartly. Pack only the essential things. Try not to overfill to travel comfortably. Take your comfortable clothes and shoes you can wear in every situation. A bag of toiletries with you will also prove beneficial.

It’s 4pm on a Friday afternoon. You’ve had a long week in the office. As you impatiently wait for quitting time to arrive, you check the forecast and see it’s going to be beautiful this weekend. All of a sudden you think, “Let’s get out of town and go camping!”

This is how so many impromptu camping trips start; when you feel compelled to break away and just get outside. It’s most prevalent during the summer months but can happen at any time of year. This feeling has hit us on plenty of occasions.

Sometimes we’re able to pull it off and enjoy a beautiful weekend outdoors. But other times we get tripped up by logistical hurdles and we are left wishing we were better prepared. The key is to do a bit of preparation BEFORE the feeling hits. If you get yourself properly set up at the start of camping season, you’ll have the ability to pick up and blow town whenever you want. So to help set you up for success this summer, we developed this guide on how to pull off a last-minute camping trip – some of our best tips to help you get out the door and into the woods, and 10 of our favorite last-minute camping meals.

Visit lesser-known public lands

If it is a weekend and the weather is nice, we guarantee you won’t be the only one who has the idea to go camping. National Parks attract heavy crowds and their popular campgrounds are fully booked months in advance. Roll up to a National Park on Friday night without a reservation and you’ve got a snowball’s chance in hell of getting a spot. But thankfully National Parks aren’t your only option…

There are plenty of other lesser utilized public lands where you can camp that lack the crowds of more popular destinations. National Forests, BLM land, National Grasslands, and National Rec Sites are all viable camping options, and with 640 acres of public land nationwide, chances are there’s a patch of dirt under a big open sky with your name on it available this weekend.

These types of public lands typically lack the amenities of National Parks and more established campgrounds (like dumpsters, potable water, etc.), which means you have an even greater responsibility to ensure you leave no trace. But for a short-notice weekend getaway, they are invaluable and available to everyone.

Buy an Interagency Parks Pass

One of the best deals out there, an interagency parks pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites all across the country. Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks & monuments and national wildlife refuges as well as day use fees in national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In some locations, carriers of an interagency pass are also entitled to reduced campsite fees. Every year we buy an America the Beautiful Interagency pass and every year we get more than our values worth out of it. If you plan to visit a few federal sites this summer, this pass is definitely worth it.

Consolidate your gear

One of the biggest challenges standing between us and getting out the door is corralling all our camping gear into the car. Too often we find that some of the gear is in the garage, some of it is in the shed, some of the cooking gear has been reintegrated back into the kitchen, and some stuff is still in the top box. Inevitably, if our gear is spread across the whole apartment, we end up forgetting some critical item.

At the start of the season, consolidate all your camping gear into one location. Go through each piece of gear and see if it still works or needs to be replaced.

We store a lot of our gear in custom made wooden crates and in Action Packers . They come in a few sizes ( 8 gallons and 24 gallons are our favorites) and are perfect for holding all of your camping equipment. If you want to be super organized, you can even put labels of what each box contains.

A roof rack with a top box is another great way to store your camping gear. Early on we picked up a Thule top box from REI, which might be one of the best decisions we have ever made. If you store your camping gear in the top box at the beginning of the season, then when you want to hit the road you’re pretty much already packed. Regardless of your storage solution, just try to keep all your gear consolidated in one place so it’s ready to go when you are.

Dedicated camp kitchen equipment

Instead of borrowing your can opener, spatula, wood spoon, forks & knives, etc. from your home kitchen whenever you go camping, we would highly suggest going to Goodwill and picking up duplicate kitchen equipment that stays with your camp kitchen.

We resisted doing this for a long time. We thought it was a waste of money. But too many times we realize we were missing a critical piece of gear when we are at the campsite. (Like the time we found ourselves next to the campfire, longingly looking at a bottle of red wine because we forgot the corkscrew.)

So rather than endure such a tragedy ever again, we suggest buying some cheap yet functional camp kitchen gear and keeping all together in one place.

Dedicated camping pantry

If you camp often, building a dedicated camping pantry at the beginning of the summer can be immensely helpful. For the same reason as listed above, it’s just easier to have a separate set of dedicated olive oil, salt, pepper, spices, etc. in a ready-to-go box. You’re looking for shelf-stable ingredients that you can use to build meals out in the field.

Pre-freeze ice packs for your cooler

We recently bought a Yeti Tundra 35 cooler and – in our opinion – it was worth every penny. Being able to carry perishables for days is great, but having to stop for ice at a convenience store can slow the whole process down.

We recommend buying reusable ice packs to keep in your home freezer. This way, all you need to do is pack your cooler , throw in your pre-frozen ice packs, and hit the road.

Not only does this reduce a stop, but it means you won’t be left with any melted water at the end of your trip!

Bring your own water

If you’re planning on visiting some of the “lesser traveled” public lands mentioned above, be warned that most of them don’t have potable water. You could pick up bottled water from a gas station, but it’s much more economical and environmentally-friendly to buy a large water jug and fill it up at home. We’ve used both collapsible and rigid versions. If you have space, the hard-sided ones will last a lifetime. But, if you’re tight on space, the collapsible ones will work just fine.

10 last-minute camping meal ideas

The biggest hurdle of a last-minute camping trip, for us, is meal planning… or lack thereof.

While we enjoy camp cooking (obviously), if we’re heading out to the woods on a whim, we usually turn to simple, tried-and-true camping recipes that don’t require a ton of pre-planning or any advanced prep.

Here are some of our favorite easy camping meals – you probably have many of the ingredients already in your pantry, and the rest can be picked up at the grocery on your way out of town.

Pancakes: Whether you buy a pre-made batter mix or make your own, pancakes are a quintessential, low maintenance camping breakfast. Our favorites are these Blueberry Banana Pancakes , Cinnamon Apple Pancakes , and Banana Bread Pancakes .

Skillet Hash: Saute some veggies and potatoes in a cast iron pan, crack in a few eggs, and breakfast is ready! Hash is another easy breakfast that can be endlessly adapted to whatever you have on hand. We’ve even made a version using a can of chickpeas instead of potatoes!

Oatmeal: Perhaps the most versatile of all camping breakfasts, oatmeal can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. We love this apple-pie inspired oatmeal that requires just oats, apples, and a few spices you likely have in your kitchen pantry.

Tacos: Requiring only a few ingredients, tacos are perhaps our favorite camping meal. These Sweet Potato & Poblano Pepper Tacos or Cilantro Lime Grilled Chicken Tacos are our favorites so far.

Stews: What better way to take advantage of your time hanging around the fire than to cook up a great campfire stew? This Sweet Potato and Peanut Stew uses a bunch of pantry items and is super filling, yet doesn’t take hours to make. If you’re looking for something a little more camp stove friendly, this red lentil stew made with coconut milk and kale comes together in less than half an hour and is packed with protein.

Paella: Paella might sound extravagant but all you need is rice, wine, broth, veggies, and some protein. Traditionally, the dish calls for saffron, but it’s totally cool to skip it for simplicity’s sake. We’ve made this dish with a dozen different vegetable + protein combinations, but this recipe is a good place to start.

One-Pot Pasta: This meal is as simple as 1) Water 2) Pasta 3) Sauce, but if you’re swinging by a grocery store on your way out of town you can get as creative as you’d like with additional ingredients or toppings. This version uses red lentil pasta, easily found at Trader Joe’s, for a super protein-packed one-pot meal. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, this one-pot orzo recipe can be made with whatever cheese and veggies you have on hand. Nachos: The sky’s the limit when it comes to dishing up nachos on your camping trip. Whether you simply scour the fridge as you load your cooler, or pick up your favorite toppings from the store, there’s really no wrong way to make these as long as you have your bases of chips, cheese, and salsa covered. We love these easy Campfire Nachos that include black beans for protein so we can call this “dinner” and not feel too guilty about it.

Love love love this post! We do all of these things and it makes getting out so much easier. We usually just keep our camping bins in the truck during the summer so we can fill the cooler and go with only a moment’s notice. I love your homemade wooden crates. So cool. Good warning on the lack of potable water in less popular camping areas. Have learned that the hard way before. What is your opinion on water filters vs tablets?

Honestly, I haven’t used water tablets before. I’ve used a few different filters before (pump style and gravity fed) and one of those Steripen UV purifiers. I carry a few tablets of Micropur on backpacking trips in case of a filter failure, but have not put them to use yet. Right now we’re using a Platypus GravityWorks filter and I LOVE it. It’s super fast and requires almost zero effort. -Megan

Those wooden boxes were custom made for us by a friend who was previously a cabinet maker. So pro-level quality! They were designed to fit perfectly in our Ford Focus hatchback camper and extend our bed platform. A good alternative – and what we used before getting those custom boxes – was Action Packers. You can find them at REI or on Amazon. They’re really durable and great for storing camping gear.

With its natural beauty and laid-back vibe, Paso Robles is a perfect stop for a relaxing long weekend. Wine is the main attraction here: Sip your way through cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, merlot, and more at 200-plus wineries. Many tastings take place on sun-drenched outdoor spaces with breathtaking vistas, creating a next-level experience. Just a short drive south from the Cancun airport, Playa del Carmen is situated along the Yucatán's palm-lined Caribbean coastline. If you’re like most people and getting time off work or kids out of school is challenging, you may only be able to manage one week of vacation. Europe is a great destination to go for one week, simply because of the cultural diversity in such a small geographic area.

The small size, proximity, and ease of transportation between many of the countries in Europe make it a good choice for a culturally rich one week holiday. If you’ve only got one week in Europe, and really want to maximize your time, but you’re wondering where to go in Europe, here are 20 perfect one-week Europe travel itineraries.

Europe is an amazing destination, especially if you pick any of these awesome itineraries, but before leaving there are a few things you should consider when planning your Europe trip:

And the winter months are generally cold in most European countries, especially in the north.That doesn’t mean you should avoid those times, it just depends on your tolerance for crowds and your preference in weather.

These are my best one week vacations in Europe. Taking a multi city European vacation can be a great way to experience several different cultures on one continent. I know that one week in Europe isn’t a lot of time, so I’ve picked cities that are either close in proximity or a quick and cheap flight between each other.

I’ve also tried to choose each Europe travel itinerary with a mix of classic sites and unique destinations. There are so many cool places to visit in Europe that are still undiscovered. Hopefully, some of these locations will be new to you and you’ll be able to discover a new European favorite!

This is one of my very favorite European vacation destinations. There are hundreds of choices for stunning history and scenery when you visit Italy, but this Amalfi Coast and Rome itinerary gives you the best of both worlds. Rome is one of the top places to visit in Europe and offers history around every corner…literally, while on the Amalfi Coast you will be overwhelmed by breathtaking ocean views.

Spend several days in Rome, then head south to the Amalfi Coast via Naples and spend a few more relaxing on the beach and driving the coast. It’s one of the best European beach vacations you can take! Amalfi is also one of the most popular Europe vacation spots during the month of August, so you may want to take that into consideration when planning your trip.

If you’re looking for a European vacation with a lot of history and class, this is it! I can’t even count the number of times that I have done the Paris/London combo. I’ve done it with kids, as a couple, as a girls’ trip, and as a field trip. No joke! And every time I go, it’s like completely different cities. You can follow completely different options for London and Paris itineraries and have an amazing time no matter what you choose. In my opinion, these are two of the best cities to visit in Europe as they offer a huge amount of culture, food, and entertainment bang for your buck!

This one-week European itinerary includes two of my favorite cities in Europe! Heidelberg, Germany, known for its ancient castle and walkable downtown is a perfect companion to Strasbourg, France only an hour and a half away, in the Alsace region of France, known for its impressive cathedral and half-timber houses. If you’d like your Europe trip to have a good mix of beach and mountain time, this is the perfect combination. Lake Como is probably one of my top favorite places on the planet. It is totally magical and peaceful, and I’ve written about it multiple times and helped friends and family plan trips there. Don’t skip Lake Como on your next trip to Italy. One of my favorite parts of Lake Como is its proximity to the Swiss border. You can actually hike over the borer and into Switzerland! Scotland is one country that should really be given an entire week. You could definitely say that about any destination, but for a relatively small country, but it has so much to offer that you could spend years here and not see it all.

What could be more charming than a week spent in these “poor provincial towns.” Ok, so they’re definitely not poor or provincial, but you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Belle’s hometown from Beauty and the Beast .

The ancient half-timber homes built along scenic rivers provide a feast for the eyes, while the patisseries, boulangeries, shops, and restaurants provide a feast for the tongue. Split your time between these two idyllic towns and enjoy a peaceful trip back in time.

If you visit Colmar or Strasbourg during Christmas, these towns will be even more magical! Strasbourg is known as “The Capital of Christmas” and both towns have incredible Christmas markets and decorations!

I call this itinerary the best of Northern Italy. Italy is huge and has so much to offer geographically and culturally, but one of my favorite parts of Italy is the train system. The trains in Italy allow for easy access to most major sites, but it can be slightly confusing, so be sure to read this guide to train travel in Italy before you go. Getting between Florence and Cinque Terre is simple with the right knowledge.

These are two cities that had never really been on my bucket list, and to be honest, I had never even heard of Bratislava, which is in Slovakia by the way! Bratislava is on the way between Budapest and Vienna (you can even cycle between Budapest and Vienna ) and Budapest and Prague, so if you’re thinking of doing a combination of any of those cities, it’s a great stop.

These incredible destinations in Italy are not well known, but that is part of the appeal. I would say they are a good option for a cheaper and less crowded alternative to the  Florence and Cinque Terre itinerary.

Lucca is a walled city in Tuscany offering stunning architecture and culture with great family fun activities such as riding bikes along the top of the medieval wall around the city. Sardinia is a heavenly island, just a ferry ride away full of breathtaking beaches, delicious food, and friendly locals. If you’re into coastal towns, walled cities, and breathtaking scenery, this combination is for you. The Dalmation Coast is absolutely stunning. The bordering country of Montenegro is really the hidden gem of Europe, offering the same draw as Croatia, but with far fewer tourists. I recommend going during shoulder season (April-May or September-October) to be able to enjoy warmer weather with fewer crowds.

By possessing an open mind to those last minute, quick dates you open up the endless possibilities to manifest experiences that otherwise might not have happened if you always felt the need to have to thoroughly plan out every single date you went on.

Look at it this way too, being called up by your significant other to go hang out and be together at the last minute also means they were thinking of you, desired to be with you and still want to show their commitment to create a strong relationship with you.

Visit the Botanical Gardens.

Most every city has their own botanical gardens to stroll about in that contain pathways bordered by beautiful, sometimes rare varieties of plants and flowers. A great spring date idea !

There are even times when different events or exhibits are brought in like a Japanese Bonsai Tree exhibit or spectacular Christmas lights in the gardens.

Take a Hike…and a Picnic

Even if you live in the city, driving just 30min to an hour outside the city limits gets you out in nature on hiking trials. Before you leave, quickly pack a picnic lunch in your backpacks so you can sit and enjoy scenic overlooks that are offered to you on your hike.

AllTrails App is great to download on your phone. You can find hikes suited to your skill level and see other hiker’s reviews of the trails too.

Play Some Ball

Go to the courts and get a one-on-one game started whether it be tennis, basketball, volleyball, racquetball or whatever sport strikes your fancy. Enjoy a great date while getting your exercise in too.

Go Foraging

Nature is always supplying nutritious, abundant food that can be collected and prepared or eaten raw right in the moment.

There are great books for every area of the country that gives descriptions of edible plants and flowers which, if newer to foraging, would be a perfect idea to have since there are poisonous plant out there you do not want to be eating.

Do just a moment’s research and check into possible foraging classes that might be going on that you could sign up for last minute.

Scenic Drive

Sometimes it is just nice to get out and take a drive. You don’t need to have an idea of where to drive, just get in, blast your favorite CD and go.

Or maybe you live by a scenic parkway and can drive along that for a while just taking in the sights.

One of our all time favorite scenic drives is the Miami to Key West drive .

Drive in Movie

Yes, drive-ins still exist in some places. If not in your city check a neighboring town and see if they have one.

They are a blast from the past and great ways to have a unique moving watching experience outside of the movie theaters.

Graveyard Picnic

Get a little spooky, grab a flashlight and/or lantern, a blanket, and pack up dinner or grab take out on your way to a local graveyard for a picnic among the spirits.

Telling ghost stories and wandering around reading the headstones put an extra layer of spook on your last minute dinner date out.

Cooking Together

Trying out new recipes or tried and true ones is way more fun with a partner. Travel the world together in your kitchen. Cooking ethnic foods may potentially provide priceless stories.

Finding a groove with one another while moving throughout the kitchen and concocting meals, I think, is a great way to see how well you work and flow with the other person you are in relationship with. The act of cooking together creates a healthy connection in the relationship.

Lakes are an idyllic location for any date. There are countless activities that could be considered date worthy.

Canoeing would be at the top of the list for a relaxing, romantic date opportunity. Cruising around the lake with the serene views of nature around you can make memories you are not to forget anytime soon.

Binge Watch a TV Show

Every once in a while it is nice to veg out with your sweetie in front of the TV. Even more so if the weather is not being too cooperative for outside activities like on a rainy day !

Take this opportunity to snuggle up on the couch and start binge watching that Netflix show everyone is buzzing about on social media or find one that interests you two more. Even if you don’t get through the whole season, you can continue to watch on your own and have discussions on what’s happening or save the rest for that next lazy day date .

Reading at the Park

Head to the nearest park, pack a blanket, some beverages and a book you both enjoy. Take time to relax and lay out on a lovely, warm, sunny afternoon while you read to each other.

Such a wonderful warm weather activity! I highly suggest you go buy a tube for about $25 because you are going to love this spur of the moment activity and renting a tube each time will be a waste of money.

All you need is two cars, sunscreen and some drinks for the river. You can find runs that are anywhere from an hour to 3 hours BUT if you embark on the latter make sure you are prepared with lots of beverages, some food and lots of extra sunscreen!

Learn Cheese Making

It is always fun to learn new food making skills and why not together?

Local dairy farmers usually put on classes to teach people cheese making as well as a little bit of animal husbandry so folks know what goes into the raising and milking of the animals.

Check in with the farmers at your local farmers market to find out who offers classes.

Foodie Tour

Popping up all over the place are locally owned, farm-to-table restaurants but even if you live in the city the list is always getting longer of places you want to get to and try because there are always new restaurants opening up.

This presents the perfect opportunity to take a Foodie Tour because you will be able to at least sample dishes from many of those restaurants on your list and then you can mark off the ones you like and dislike.

Seems like the new big thing over the past few years is the opening up of local microbreweries. An entertaining, last minute date would be to put together some breweries close by each other and perform your own pub crawl to sample different brews from different breweries.

Don’t like beer? Hard Cider Breweries or even Liquor Distilleries are getting in on the action which means you can visit them and sample their creations.

Coloring Books

Engage in activities that are proven to be stress reducing like coloring. Adults can color too and there are coloring books made specifically for them.

The intricate drawings in the coloring books let us feel like children again but grown up at the same time.

Here is a great adult coloring book that you could enjoy together on a spontaneous date night!

A day at the local zoo gets you out and about and supporting the animals that live there. A great spur of the moment date idea!

Zoos are a great learning opportunity that do not require you to purchase tickets in advance so you can dash over on any day you wish.

Atlanta Zoo (pictured below) is definitely one of the best things to do in Atlanta .

Go One Town Over

Act like a tourist and head to your neighboring city or small town. On the way over google some “not to miss” sights to explore, stroll Main Street and eat at a local restaurant.

People Watching

One of my favorite things to do is head to a local downtown restaurant with a deck on the main thoroughfare, grab food and a drink as you sit and people watch.

Take in Some Music

Pick up a local newspaper and look in the events section. In my city every night has numerous local artists performing their music at large and small venues all over town.

The genres are diverse as well so there is always something for everyone’s taste or an opportunity to check out a new flavor of music.

Retro Arcade

Take a trip back to your childhood and go play some games at a local Retro Arcade where you get to play all those old games you thought had been lost to your past.

Don’t have a Retro Arcade? Any arcade will be fun as long as you can both have fun challenging each other to silly games while enjoying just being with one another.

Puzzles and Popcorn

Dates at home do not necessarily have to involve just vegging on the couch and watching the television. Grab a puzzle and start working those brain muscles together to get it put together.

Turn on the tunes and talk to each other as you meticulously assemble together the picture spread out in tiny little pieces all over your table. Popcorn is always a nice compliment to this activity too.

On one of those gorgeous, crystal clear nights grab a blanket and drive out beyond the noise of city lights to find a place to park.

Once you get there climb on top of your car hood, throw down the blanket and gaze upon the little dots of sparkling points shining down upon you from high above in the heavens.

You could always bring along a picnic or just drinks and dessert to nosh on as you gaze.

Festival Fun

Seems every weekend there is a beer festival, bacon fest, cheese festival, hard cider fest, donut bake off, pie bake off, etc.

Festivals galore and on different topics that you will always be able to find some festival fun together. You can also find information on events like this in your local newspaper.

Mountain Biking/Road biking

Getting out and being active together is a great date idea. Free is another pleasant aspect of this date. You most likely already have bikes and gear if you are even considering this date so there is nothing to pay for other than the gas to get you to the trails.

There are always trails around and the aforementioned AllTrails App can also be filtered to discover trails suitable for biking.

Comedy shows

Can you agree that there is nothing better than getting red in the face, cracking up together and relieving stress all through laughter?

Similar to music, there are comedians performing all over the place and the local paper should point you in the right direction and venue to head to as well.

Beach Bummin’

Is there a beach that is within a suitable distance from you for a quick date get-away?

If so, jump in the car and get to beach bummin’, strolling the local boardwalk, reading in the sun or splashing around in the cool waters of the ocean’s waves.

If a beach is not an option there are lakes closer around with swimming beaches that are just as desirable.

Food trucks have increased in popularity over the past few years. So much so that there are now food truck rallies or smaller gatherings of food trucks that allow you to stuff yourself with numerous, tasty food options.

Make sure to make this a quick date when you are starving. A perfect easy date idea!

Friends Game Night

Date nights don’t always have to be limited to just the two of you. Even last minute ones.

Call up your friends and see who else is trying to plan something for the evening, invite them over, pull out the board games or cards, ask everyone to bring drinks and/or snacks and…POOF….last minute group date has manifested!

Comedy Tour Bus

Succumb to a great source of entertainment, laughter and learning interesting tid bits about your town as you two hop on a comedy bus tour.

The comedic actors that head these tours are absolutely amazing at their jobs and can bestow upon you a date that you might want to repeat again down the road. Some of these tours are BYOB and even stop at local breweries so check into that and come prepared for a good time.

For those late night , last minute dates karaoke is a fantastic choice.

Get silly, have a drink or two and then get up on that stage and sing your heart out and since this is a date, get up there together for a duet. No doubt you’ll have stories to tell from this date option.

Taking in a Sports Game

Check out your local sports teams playing a hometown game. Usually, the minor leagues and local teams whether high school or college tend to be cheaper than watching the Pros play.

Even if the sport is not one you particularly enjoy watching, I find that the ambience at games is worth going out to and just hanging out. Another option for inviting friends along to this as well. More the merrier.

Backyard Fire Pit & S’mores

Backyard Fire Pit & S’mores is one of the best short date ideas.

When the weather it beautiful out and the days turn into evenings, seize the opportunity to gather up wood for the fire pit, all the fixings for S’mores, get the fire blazing and lounge about soaking up the fire’s warmth and glow.

Not exactly on everyone’s “first thought” list but it should be because drag shows are a blast!

These ladies put on an amazing, sometimes hilarious, show full up with glitter, glam and glitz. Make sure this is an option for late night dates since they tend to start farther into the evening.

Lounge by the Pool

An Oldie but a goody. The pool can beckon to you for a quick date and dip no matter the time of day.

If you, personally, do not have a pool then, once again, ring up some friends with a pool and get a pool party going with just a few calls.

Casino Trip

Many of us have a casino within an hour of our homes so if you two have some extra cash on hand, pick up your sweetie and head down to test your luck at some blackjack or the slot machines.

You may lose or win but you will already have won with a quick little night out together.

Progressive Dinner

Remember that list of restaurants that you have been wanting to try out?

Another idea, besides a foodie tour, would be to pick out about 4 restaurants and then order them by appetizer, mini first meal, mini second meal and then dessert.

In this way you progress to each restaurant after each course and are still able to sample food from all the menus.

Impromptu Camping Trip

One of the best ever quick date ideas!

If you have the gear, then all you need is to make that last minute decision to put some provisions into the cooler and head out to your favorite camping spot.

Maybe camping options are not as close for you to just take a quick overnight trip too and if this is the case then turn to your back yard. Transform it into a makeshift campsite as you pitch your tent and use the fire pit for your camp fire. S’mores still welcome!

Go to a Pick Your Own Farm

Craving berries, apples, pears, peaches or it just could be pumpkin time?

Check around your area and find local farmers who allow guests to come to their farms and pick fruits and even veggies for themselves.

The two of you could head to the farm, pick your produce and head back to bake some recipes or spend a day canning all your goodies for later use.

Alternative Checkers

Playing games is another Go-To, last minute date but this game is a spin on the classic checkers game. They have those giant checker boards available which is what you will need to get to put on your table.

Instead of checkers take wine glasses and fill one side with red wine and the other with white. As you jump your opponents ‘checker” glass you get to indulge in drinking it. Of course, if you don’t like wine you can always switch it out with the beverage of you choosing but make sure the liquids are different colors.

Last Minute Date Idea Lists

The nice thing about being spontaneous is that there are not a great many details to have to work out and pay for.

The majority of the above mentioned activities are easy on your wallet or even free. Print out this list and hang it on the refrigerator so you can have it handy when trying to decide what kind of date resonates with you in that moment.

Even in this shorter form of speech, you still need to have a structure to what you are saying to ensure your message is understood by everyone.

What is an impromptu speech?

Shasta Lake splashes in at No. 2 for impromptu Memorial Day getaway in National index

S hasta Lake was ranked number 2 in the country as a last-minute lakeside getaway for Memorial Day, right behind Tennessee's Douglas Lake. 

According to rankings from HomeToGo, a vacation rental website, Shasta Lake is home to the most budget-friendly accommodations for the two weeks surrounding Memorial Day weekend with the median price per night for a lakeside vacation rental being $225.72 on average.

"Emerald waters and cascading mountains frame Shasta Lake, a haven for houseboating, fishing, and hiking in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Explore miles of shoreline and hidden waterfalls in this majestic outdoor playground," the vacation site wrote.

The 2024 "Lake-It-Easy" index  also revealed other getaway destinations including 12 states, with Tennessee, California, North Carolina and Utah leading the polls. 

HomeToGo said in a press release four key indicators were taken into consideration for scores, which included price score, popularity score, size score and weather score.

Ed Sheeran surprises Sheffield College music students with impromptu gig

The four-time Grammy winner performed Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill before playing the acoustic guitar as the students freestyled rap lyrics on the microphone.

Ed Sheeran surprised a group of music students by giving an impromptu gig at their college.

The four-time Grammy winner turned up at The Sheffield College as 19-year-old student Lol Bailey was performing the singer's number one track Shape Of You in the college's drama and music theatre.

Sheeran performed the track as well as Castle On The Hill, before playing the acoustic guitar as the students freestyled rap lyrics on the microphone.

The 33-year-old musician laughed when a student rapped: "Came to the studio, the new day is waking, Ed Sheehan is here, my legs are kind of shaking."

He also answered the young students' questions about the industry and listened to their future career ambitions.

Angela Foulkes, The Sheffield College's chief executive and principal, said it was "fantastic" welcoming Sheeran to the institution.

"It's not every day that a global singer songwriter drops by to share their talent, knowledge and expertise with students to help them go further in their careers," she said.

Matthew Henley, curriculum manager for music at the college, said it was an "inspirational experience" the students will "never forget".

The surprise appearance was organised by the Sheffield Music Hub team at Sheffield City Council.

50 years later, I’m still falling for Taipei

A cookbook author revisits the city and its vibrant food scene decades after her first taste of it.

I feel transformed when I visit Taiwan. Even my husband tells me I become a different version of myself when I go. And it happens each time I go back. After passing through immigration and collecting my luggage, I open my mouth to speak and the Mandarin rolls off my tongue.

This intense connection to Chinese culture began in 1973, the first night I arrived in Taipei. After an exceptionally boring childhood in Andover, I dropped out of college, vowing to do something exciting and unconventional with my life. My mentor, Julia Child, inspired and encouraged me, but I chose Asia instead of France. Even years later, I realized it was exactly the right thing to do. A recent trip back to Taipei reminded me why I fell in love with that part of the world in the first place.

Taipei’s food scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavors influenced by Chinese, Japanese, and indigenous traditions. It is especially renowned for its vibrant street food culture. At the bustling night markets, the stalls offer myriad treats such as chou tofu (“stinky tofu”), grilled squid, and oyster omelets. A particular favorite of mine is beef noodle soup, a Taiwanese comfort food that features red-cooked, tender beef simmered in a rich, aromatic broth flavored with spices such as star anise, cinnamon, and soy sauce.

Talented chefs are drawn here, too: Paul Lee, who moved from LA, opened Impromptu ; André Chiang, a Michelin-starred chef from Singapore, created RAW ; and at the landmark restaurant Shin Yeh , master chef Chen Wei Nan has been weaving magic, creating memorable Taiwanese classics since 1977. The superb quality and variety of Taiwanese ingredients were part of what drew them. All of these cooks were prominent in bringing the “bistronomy” trend to Taipei, a French custom of relaxed chic, with no tablecloths and affordable, set-price, multi-course meals. And many of them have earned Michelin stars for their efforts.

When I was planning my Asia trip, I emailed Jennifer Che, the daughter of a good Taiwanese friend. (Her father was my Mandarin tutor when I lived in Toledo, Ohio.) Jennifer lives in Hong Kong and writes a popular food blog called Tiny Urban Kitchen . She describes herself as a “chemistry nerd [MIT graduate], a patent attorney by day, blogger by night, and food enthusiast always.” When invited, she immediately agreed to join me with her husband, Brian.

“Taiwanese food is comfort food for me. Dishes like Taiwanese braised pork over rice, oyster omelet, and ‘fantuan’“ (stuffed rice ball) are some of my favorites. I feel so lucky that my mom likes to cook and always tries to make different Taiwanese dishes despite having limited access to Asian ingredients in Toledo, where I grew up,” Che said. “I deeply associate Taiwanese braised meat over rice with my childhood. I also love fruits like guava, rose apple, mangos, and jujubes. Eating them reminds me of our summer trips to Taiwan as kids. Taipei has a vibrant market life, and the street food is hard to beat.”

I knew I had to go to Din Tai Fung , one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. Their Shanghai juicy buns (xiao long bao) and other dumplings are indescribably delicious. Although it was a nasty, chilly day, and I had to wait 90 minutes sitting outside at the curb, I was determined. The food did not disappoint: The Shanghai dumplings were juicy and the skins were paper-thin. I demolished an order in minutes and had to order more. Be prepared to wait if you go to the Din Tai Fung location on Xinyi Road (the original location and the very best).

We had booked rooms at the Grand Hyatt Taipei , next to the renowned skyscraper, Taipei 101. Jennifer suggested we stroll to A Hong Popiah on Wuxing Street, where we sampled excellent popiah spring rolls stuffed with different fillings. The popiah skins are paper-thin, and the most traditional are loaded with vegetables like shredded cabbage and carrots, bean sprouts, and shredded pork floss (“rou song”), topped with crushed peanuts with a bit of sugar, and a smear of hoisin sauce. It’s a meal in a sandwich, and most rolls are priced under $5.

The market also offers a sumptuous variety of street foods, such as a typical northern Chinese breakfast with dou jiang (soybean milk), which can be sweetened with sugar for a sweet version or served with chopped scallions, chili paste, and soy sauce for a savory rendering. Both are paired with youtiao (crisp, deep-fried crullers) and shao bing, flaky sesame bread, as well as stuffed radish/turnip cakes.

For our big splurge, Jennifer booked a table at the Michelin-starred Fujin Tree Taiwanese Cuisine & Champagne , which was outstanding. The flavor of our first dish, a fresh, crisp-tender seasonal green vegetable, reminded me of the summery “ empty heart vegetable .” Next, we had one of the most delicious, dried turnip omelets I have ever tasted, a traditional Taiwanese specialty. This one was light and airy as a souffle. Our selection of Dong Po Rou, a braised dish of succulent belly pork, was another winner: Slow-simmering and steaming reduces the sauce to a lustrous glaze and transforms the meat into a buttery tenderness. Stir-fried oysters in black bean sauce and Taiwanese fried rice rounded out the meal. Since it’s an island, Taiwan has plenty of seafood, especially oysters, clams, squid, and numerous freshwater and saltwater fish varieties.

My Taiwan sojourn once again made me realize that despite my youth and naivete at 19, I had made the right decision in traveling to the other side of the world and discovering my destiny as an Asian food authority and cookbook author. Even 50 years later, Taipei — a culinary paradise — still feels like home.

Earlier this week, a couple of former Republican members of Congress sent an email to dozens of fellow G.O.P. retirees with a clear and urgent subject line.

“Join the Republicans for Biden,” it said. “PLEASE.”

The email invited the former lawmakers to a virtual meeting next week with members of President Biden’s campaign team — a meeting that, for many of them, would be their first official interaction with Biden’s re-election campaign since it kicked off last year.

Some recipients were quick to offer their help. But multiple people who received the email said it had kicked off a private airing of frustrations among Republicans who, despite publicly supporting Biden in 2020, and in some cases risking their political future to take on Trump, said they had been largely ignored by the campaign and an administration they didn’t always agree with.

“A lot of us are wrestling with, how can we support him when he’s gone so far to the left?” said former Representative Chris Shays, Republican of Connecticut, who endorsed Biden in 2020 but said he was “unlikely” to do so again.

Back in 2020, a steady stream of Republicans stepped forward and endorsed Biden, representing a narrow but important slice of the electorate: anti-Trump Republicans. That group took a hit this week when Nikki Haley, Trump’s last rival standing in the Republican primary, said she planned to vote for him — a man she frequently described as dangerous.

Now, even as Trump lays out a vision for a presidency that could be even more radical than his first , the Republican opposition is in an uneasy place. Some Republicans blame the Biden campaign, saying they’ve heard practically nothing from an operation they think could use their help. And they worry that the omission represents a broader failure to bring moderate Republicans into the fold.

“The Haley endorsement of Trump is a blow,” said former Representative Adam Kinzinger, a Republican from Illinois who retired after serving on the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. “If you don’t have other Republicans out there creating a permission structure for those folks to vote Democratic, I don’t know how you expect to get many of them.”

Kinzinger said that he had heard from a Biden aide after airing a similar complaint late last year, but that he hadn’t been the target of formal outreach about how he could be helpful to the campaign. He plans to support Biden, he said. “If they don’t reach out, it’s fine. I don’t care. But to me, it’s political malpractice,” he said.

‘Everyone’s just sort of scratching their head’

Trump has done little to reach out to moderate Republicans or Haley voters, and during the primaries, he promised to essentially blacklist her supporters . In 2020, Biden showed off his Republican support on the biggest possible stage: the Democratic National Convention, where those speaking on his behalf included the likes of former Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey.

It was an important moment that helped the Biden campaign frame the threat they said Trump posed as bigger than any political party. And while it’s impossible to know exactly how much any one surrogate moved the needle, Biden did make important gains with moderate and conservative voting groups .

Some of those Republican surrogates, though, say that during Biden’s presidency his outreach to them essentially stopped as he focused on shoring up his left flank. Former Representative Susan Molinari, a Republican from New York who gave a short speech at the 2020 convention, said she had heard little from the White House or Biden’s campaign.

“I’m concerned about the state of the campaign, that there has been little to no outreach to almost every Republican that I know who wants to help,” Molinari told me. She said the silence seemed out of character for the Biden she knew as a backslapping, aisle-crossing colleague when they both served in Congress.

“I think everyone’s just sort of scratching their head,” Molinari said, although she added that, all the same, she planned to help Biden in any way she could.

Campaigning across party lines

The Biden campaign said that it was doing extensive work to reach out to Republican voters and officials alike, but that some of that necessarily happened behind the scenes. In 2020, many key Republican endorsements were not rolled out until August or September.

The campaign spent seven figures on an ad buy aimed specifically at voters who supported Nikki Haley, and plans to deploy campaign staff members for an outreach program specifically aimed at her primary voters in battleground states. This week, it convened a meeting for Haley supporters. And some bipartisan campaigning is already in the works.

Olivia Troye, a former aide in the Trump administration, said Biden campaign officials reached out to her starting a few months ago. “I think there’s more of a push as this year gets going,” she said.

“Yes, I’m supporting Biden and have been working with his campaign team,” the former defense secretary Chuck Hagel, a Republican who served in the Obama administration, said in an email. “Will be campaigning for him this year.”

It was former Representatives Jim Greenwood of Pennsylvania and Claudine Schneider of Rhode Island who took it upon themselves, Greenwood told me, to convene their fellow Republicans by email this week.

“No matter how you are feeling about Joe Biden, we think we all understand that our democracy and the future of our nation are on the line!” their email said. “We need to support President Biden now, buying time to rebuild our party.”

Former Representative David Jolly of Florida, who left the Republican Party in 2018 and is now an independent, received the email. He said he was surprised at the level of invective expressed by the other congressional retirees in response to it.

“My eyes were opened at the level of anger and disgust at Biden, truly,” Jolly said. “There is a real disappointment in Biden’s policy direction.”

Greenwood, who said he has personally told Biden about the disappointment among his Republican allies, suggested he thought people would come around. “My response to them is: ‘Look, I’m a Republican. I’m not 100 percent aligned with the Biden administration’s policies. I just think the alternative is unthinkable,’” he said.

It’s possible that the chorus of Republican Biden supporters will be different in 2024. A spokeswoman for former Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan, who endorsed Biden in 2020, said Snyder planned not to make an endorsement in the presidential election this year and focus instead on Michigan House races. Kasich and Whitman did not return requests for comment.

Other 2020 Biden supporters say they haven’t decided what to do. Former Representative Bob Inglis, Republican of South Carolina, said he was still holding out hope that somehow Biden would drop out of the race and be replaced with someone “normal,” as he put it. (His humble suggestion? Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, the Rhode Island Democrat.)

As for Shays, the iconoclast from Connecticut, he said he was looking at the third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Five takeaways from Trump’s rally in the Bronx, from a Times boss

I have been to a lot of Trump rallies. Yesterday, Sam Dolnick , a deputy managing editor for The New York Times, attended his first, in the Bronx. In an editor-writer reversal, I asked him to tell us what stood out to him.

The crowd was diverse. Trump’s crowds normally skew heavily white, but in the largely Black and Latino Bronx, I spoke to a Black grandmother from Queens who had voted for Obama, young Dominican men outraged over immigration and a Black architect from Harlem attending her first rally. She wanted to be sure that the news media, whom she made clear she did not trust, did not describe the gathering as an all-white affair. “Does this look like a Klan rally?” she said to me. Several told me that Democrats hadn’t done enough to improve their daily lives. “Diversity is a word that has gotten us nowhere,” Z. Jackson, a Harlem architect, said. “The South Bronx is 20 years behind. And Donald Trump is the one who showed up.”

It’s a party. It was a perfect summer evening, and the crowd was thrilled, even joyful. At the park’s entrance, a vendor had set up a loudspeaker blaring clips of Trump speeches, like a greatest-hits album. Strangers in line high-fived and took selfies together. People started impromptu chants and admired one another’s MAGA gear. It felt like a rock concert, or a playoff game. Several people told me that they felt like they were part of something important and exciting. Yet what was being celebrated included Trump’s calls for the mass deportation of migrants, which prompted jubilant chants of “Send them back.”

Conspiracy and lies. Up close, Trump’s capacity for unfurling untruths and seeding them into his crowds was startling to witness. Speaking of the migrants, he said, “If you look at these people, did you see them? They are physically fit. They’re 19 to 25. Almost every one is a male, and they look like fighting age. I think they’re building an army. They want to get us from within.” Later, I asked a woman what she thought of the secret-army claim, which is false. “How do you know they aren’t?” she countered. Many voters I talked to cited YouTube, TikTok or X as their main sources of information.

Criminal case: So what ? Closing arguments in Trump’s criminal case will begin next week in a courtroom just a subway ride away from the rally’s site. Everyone I spoke to shrugged off the trial as a witch hunt, inconsequential or both. Many complained about the judge. Others pointed to previous presidents who had affairs. No one cited what Trump is actually accused of: falsifying business records as part of a cover-up. “We all make mistakes,” a young man from the Bronx told me. “I promise I made a lot of mistakes. So we all need to be forgiven.”

To this crowd, Trump’s ideas didn’t sound so radical. His proposed solution to the migrant crisis is to create mass detention facilities and deport millions of immigrants. Nearly everyone I spoke to complained about how Democrats have handled the migrant crisis. One woman, resentful that migrants were being put up in local hotels, said she never heard of a New Yorker getting a free hotel room. Another complained about a migrant center that she said had overrun her Queens neighborhood. Many in the crowd said they did not believe that Trump’s border plans were racist. “Immigration control is not racism,” said Andres Brock, 27, a YouTuber from the Bronx. “That’s every country in the world.”
