As its Diamond Anniversary celebrations draw to a close and the next chapter begins, the InterContinental brand is redefining its ethos of discovery and modern luxury. Setting the tone for the future of luxury travel for the next generation is a fresh approach to the guest experience, with new programmes, collaborations and innovations as doors continue to open from Ras Al Khaimah to Rome.

Unlocking New Destinations the World Over

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is the world’s first and largest international luxury hotel brand, with over 200 hotels in the world’s most exciting destinations. The brand continues to pioneer luxury travel, delighting travellers with the exhilaration of fascinating new places to discover.

True to its pioneering spirit, some of the most recent openings have included InterContinental Ras Al Khaimah Mina Al Arab Resort & Spa , marking the first IHG Hotels & Resorts property in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, as well as ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort , the first luxury resort in Tohoku, Japan.

As the year continues to unfold, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts is poised to bring its inspiring design and world-class service to even more locales. In Australia, the former Hotel Continental, just outside of Melbourne, will have a new, luxurious lease on life when it opens as InterContinental Sorrento Mornington Peninsula mid-year. Igniting the Appetite for Adventure

The InterContinental brand's signature restaurants, helmed by a roster of Michelin-starred chefs and up-and-coming talent, create gastronomic experiences meant to be savoured  – even long after the meal has come to an end. Moving forward, acclaimed restaurant concepts and fresh culinary talent will continue to whisk guests away from the familiar with transportive, bucket-list worthy meals.

Two-time James Beard Award-winning chef and restaurateur Chef Scott Conant will open the second location of The Americano this spring at InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta . The restaurant opening is part of the hotel’s complete transformation that will usher in a new chapter of luxury and elevate the guest experience. The Americano Atlanta will blend a European style of highly personalised service with contemporary Italian-inspired dining to create an exceptional and convivial experience that complements the ambience of Buckhead.  

InterContinental Singapore will soon announce its new Chef de Cuisine following its global hunt for the next culinary superstar . Providing a high-profile platform for up-and-coming culinary talent, the chef selected for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will head up their very own named Italian-concept restaurant at the property.

Redefining the Luxury Experience

When InterContinental Hotels & Resorts was established by Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American Airways, it set the benchmark for luxury travel, becoming synonymous with bold exploration, cultural discovery and the worldliness that travel brings. Its next chapter will encompass a fresh 360-degree approach to the guest experience with new programmes, collaborations and innovations.

The iconic scents from European luxury brand Byredo can now be enjoyed by guests around the world thanks to a programme  bringing full-sized Byredo products into every guest room. Featuring cult favourites within Byredo’s fragrance portfolio, including Bal d’Afrique, the launch combines a response to the growing demand from travellers looking for unique stays while travelling more consciously with meaningful luxury products. This initiative marks the first major milestone in IHG Hotels & Resorts’ goal to eliminate single use items across the guest stay by 2030. It forms part of Journey to Tomorrow , IHG’s series of ambitious commitments to make a positive difference for our people, communities and planet of the next decade. With this programme, the Byredo ritual will become a highlight of InterContinental bathrooms over the coming months.

Bringing to life the delight in discovering beautiful places and the elegance of the brand, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts recently collaborated with British artist Claire Luxton on an exciting art installation, ‘ The Elegance of Worldliness .’ This visionary work paid homage to the brand’s global journey from the first to the world’s largest luxury hotel brand through Claire Luxton’s signature flora and fauna motifs. The artwork transformed the façade of InterContinental London Park Lane. The collaboration marked the first with Claire Luxton, with more exciting experiences soon to come that celebrate the joy of travel.

TPG's guide to luxury bus travel

Given the ongoing challenges surrounding air travel — ranging from flight delays and cancellations to lost luggage and long airport queues — staying on the ground may be the easiest (and least stressful) way to get from point A to point B. While taking a road trip or traveling by train may take longer than flying, land travel has its benefits.

To start, the slower journey makes it possible to truly appreciate your surroundings, whether you're traveling between forested mountains or past beautiful city skylines. Not to mention, overland options are generally more environmentally friendly and less expensive than flying.

Sticking to ground transportation doesn't mean you have to make major sacrifices on comfort. Even previously cramped options like buses are evolving to attract all kinds of travelers, including those who enjoy a dose of luxury.

Gone are the days of standard buses being the only option for intercity travel. In recent years, luxury buses have emerged to provide travelers with a stylish take on the classic bus journey.

How exactly are luxury buses different from traditional options, and are they a good fit for you? We took a closer look at this elevated transportation option, including a few noteworthy routes, to find out.

What is a luxury bus?

Luxury buses offer a "first-class travel experience that combines the luxury and personal space of a private jet with the affordability and convenience of a motorcoach," according to The Jet , one of several luxury bus companies that launched in recent years.

Unlike regular buses, luxury options provide several comforts and services more commonly found in the first-class cabin of an airplane.

For example, more space is available between seats, as they're typically arranged in a 1-2 setup across aisles. As a result, you'll enjoy plenty of legroom and space for reclining your seat and using fold-out tables for work or snacking.

Additionally, luxury buses come with a number of conveniences, including free high-speed Wi-Fi as well as complimentary snacks and beverages. You'll also have access to a clean bathroom facility, plus various TV-viewing options and attendant services (on select routes).

Why should you take a luxury bus?

There are several reasons why a luxury bus may be the way to go the next time you travel.

To start, there's the price. A bus ride (even a luxury one) generally costs a fraction of what you would pay for a flight and transportation to and from an airport.

Then there's the convenience of using buses. Intercity buses typically depart from depots in city centers and often offer additional connections at rail and airport terminals, making them easy to reach. Plus, there are no security lines to endure, and you are not required to check in an hour before departure. If you're traveling with luggage, all you have to do is place your bag in the cargo area before you board.

Depending on where you're traveling, you may also find that buses are a more efficient way to reach your destination, as some cities do not offer flight or rail service. They're more environmentally friendly than driving your own car or flying, too, so you can feel good about your journey.

Why should you consider a luxury bus specifically? There is plenty of space as well as amenities on board. If you value having extra elbow room, enjoy creature comforts like snacks and drinks while in transit and want to pay the cheapest price possible, then you'll likely find a luxury bus appealing.

Which luxury bus routes should you consider?

The majority of luxury buses operate between major metropolitan areas and popular tourist destinations. While New York City is a hub for many luxury bus routes, others depart from places such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Houston and Dallas.

There are numerous routes to consider for luxury bus travel, but three in particular stand out from others currently available.

The Jet: New York City to Washington, DC

The Jet luxury bus service runs its route between New York's Hudson Yards and Washington 's Metro Center six days a week. Offering enough space to accommodate a maximum of 14 people, The Jet provides passengers with lots of legroom at their wide seats. Each seat features a specially designed "motion-canceling" technology called HoverSeat designed to absorb all the bumps you may encounter during the ride.

While traveling to the nation's capital, you'll have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi and a restroom with high-end details reminiscent of what you'd find in a hotel bathroom (such as white subway tiles and black brass fixtures). Plus, you'll receive complimentary beverages (think: sodas, coffee, beer and wine) as well as snacks such as chips and trail mix from an onboard attendant. Bus tickets also include two free checked bags and two carry-on bags .

Traveling from New York to Washington takes about four hours and 15 minutes, and prices start at $99 for a one-way trip. Specific seats are available for reservation in advance.

Vonlane: Houston to Austin

Vonlane offers 22-person luxury buses for travel within Texas. While you'll find routes connecting several major cities in the Lone Star State — including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio — the Houston-to-Austin itinerary is an especially popular option.

As you ride on a Vonlane bus, you can stay connected with free Wi-Fi from the comfort of an oversized leather seat that also features an extended recline and leg rest. You'll also enjoy complimentary food and drinks served by an onboard attendant; keep in mind that alcohol costs extra. Loaner noise-canceling headphones are free to borrow, as are items such as eye masks, neck pillows, blankets and phone and computer chargers.

The trip from Houston to Austin typically takes two hours and 45 minutes, and it costs at least $114 one-way.

Napaway: Washington, DC, to Nashville

For travel between Washington and Nashville, there's Napaway — a luxury bus operator with overnight sleeper coaches. Passengers book one of 18 "personal suites," which feature two seats that convert into lie-flat beds with memory foam mattress pads. Napaway also provides pillows and blankets for the trip.

Standard amenities include high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of movies and TV shows to watch from personal devices, fold-out desks and sleep kits with eye masks, toothbrushes and earplugs. Complimentary bottled water is also available, though that's the extent of Napaway's onboard food and beverage options.

The 11-hour overnight Napaway itinerary departs Washington at 10 p.m. on Fridays and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost a minimum of $125 for the one-way trip.

Bottom line

Most people don't consider bus travel to be a luxury experience thanks, in part, to the extra time it adds to the journey. However, several recently launched companies now provide more comfortable and upscale ways to hit the road.

Sure, you'll need to pay a little more for a luxury bus ticket than one in a regular coach, but the service is still an affordable option when compared to flying. Plus, you'll enjoy many of the same amenities you would receive at the front of a plane. So, you don't have to worry about squeezing into a tight space without the necessities to keep you comfortable.

Defining global luxury travel

The InterContinental brand was established by Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American Airways, in 1946 with a bold vision to bring luxurious accommodation to every corner of the globe. Its 75 th  anniversary is not only a moment to look forward to its bright future but also recognise the brand’s rich heritage: InterContinental became the first international hotel chain in the Middle East with the opening of the Phoenicia in Beirut in 1961;  Martin Luther King finished his iconic “I Have A Dream” at InterContinental The Willard Washington D.C. in 1963; InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland took on the title of architectural marvel and the world’s first quarry hotel in 2018 and InterContinental New York Barclay served as the official hotel of the 2021 U.S. Open Tennis tournament.

Today, with 206 hotels and over 70 set to open in the coming years, the vision of bringing luxury travel to emerging and established destinations continues. He is running for the Senate as an immigrant who made good, reaching out to Ohio voters with a stirring, only-in-America bootstraps story: arriving as a child from Colombia, taking a risk on a struggling business, and then turning it into a smashing success and himself into a millionaire 100 times over.

Running under the banner of Donald J. Trump’s populist political movement, Bernie Moreno, the Republican challenging Senator Sherrod Brown, humbly calls himself a “car guy from Cleveland” and recounts the modest circumstances of his childhood, when his immigrant family started over from scratch in the United States.

“We came here with absolutely nothing — we came here legally — but we came here, nine of us in a two-bedroom apartment,” Mr. Moreno said in 2023 , in what became his signature pitch. His father “had to leave everything behind,” he has said, remembering what he called his family’s “lower-middle-class status.”

But there is much more that Mr. Moreno does not say about his background, his upbringing and his very powerful present-day ties in the country where he was born.

Mr. Moreno was born into a rich and politically connected family in Bogotá, a city that it never completely left behind, where some members continue to enjoy great wealth and status.

While his parents left Colombia in 1971 to start over in the United States, where Mr. Moreno fully transplanted, some of his siblings eventually returned. One of his brothers served as Bogotá’s ambassador to the United States. Another founded a development and construction empire that stretches across the Andes from the Colombian interior to its Caribbean shores.

Political candidates seeking office for the first time necessarily engage in a calculated process of self-creation, carefully sifting through their past and deciding what to emphasize, what to minimize, what to be ready to explain and, in many cases, what they hope no one will find out. Needless to say, it helps to give voters as much as possible to find relatable and as little as possible to find alienating or hard to understand.

For Mr. Moreno, the way he has framed his biography — and the material that he has omitted from the frame — reflects a keen awareness of the political reality in the Trump-era Republican Party, in Ohio, and in a contest with the rumpled Mr. Brown, a Democrat (and a doctor’s Yale-educated son) who has survived in an increasingly red state by holding himself out as a champion of the working class.

In an Ohio hit hard by economic globalization and the decline of heavy manufacturing, a candidate from the South American elite might feel like a stretch. Instead, Mr. Moreno describes how he bet his life savings in 2005 on a small, underperforming Mercedes-Benz dealership on Cleveland’s West Side, turning what could be a liability in courting the working class — fabulous wealth, with assets valued up to $105.7 million and yearly income nearing $6 million — into proof of his own hard work and entrepreneurial street smarts.

As such political autobiographies go, it is powerful in a state where Republican successes of late have come from the drift of former steel towns in Northeast Ohio, the coal belt of Appalachia and heavy industries of Northern Ohio toward Mr. Trump. For the broader G.O.P., his journey also bolsters the party’s appeal to Latino voters and to first-generation immigrants striving for a better life.

But the Morenos’ story is not a typical American immigrant’s tale.

Roberto Moreno, one of the candidate’s brothers, is president and chief executive of Amarilo Holdings , a major development and construction conglomerate in Bogotá.

Another brother, Luis Alberto Moreno, after serving as Colombia’s ambassador to the United States , was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank with the backing of George W. Bush’s administration. His wide circle of friends speaks to a bipartisan, internationalist bent that shares little in common with the Trumpist worldview: It includes the music impresario Quincy Jones, the actress Salma Hayek, Bill and Hillary Clinton, former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida and Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate majority leader.

The Morenos’ immigration narrative is also atypical in that they were not strangers to the country when they arrived: The candidate’s father, Bernardo Moreno Sr., had studied gastroenterology, earned a master’s degree in surgery and had done his medical residency all at the University of Pennsylvania, where Bernie Moreno’s eldest three siblings were born. His mother, Marta Moreno, had earned a degree from Stanford.

In Colombia, Dr. Moreno had been the country’s equivalent of the secretary of health, and he and his wife enjoyed what Bernie Moreno described as considerable generational wealth on both sides: multiple properties, farms, servants, staff and a house in Bogotá so prominent that it was later converted to the German ambassador’s residence.

Roberto Moreno said their father was a physician for the Colombian president, Misael Pastrana Borrero, from 1970 to 1974. He was also the doctor to Dorita Salive, wife of the industrialist Rómulo Lara Borrero, which fostered a relationship between the rich and powerful Lara family and the Morenos.

The Morenos weren’t the richest family in Colombia, but they were among the best connected. And their story of emigrating to the United States is familiar to the South American elite.

“Colombian millionaires don’t leave Colombia to live the American dream or to prevent their children from growing up with privileges,” said Federico Gómez Lara, editor in chief of Cambio Colombia , a magazine of current affairs and politics, and a grandson of Dorita Salive. “They leave Colombia because they have enough money to throw away. Colombia seems like a village to them, and they want their children to be educated and mingle with the real rich.”

In a friendly interview in Colombia earlier this year with the journalist Patricia Lara Salive, Mr. Gomez’s mother and the heiress to one of the nation’s largest fortunes, Bernie Moreno’s brother Roberto said that his parents had intended to stay in Florida only briefly while the children learned English, but Dr. Moreno’s rapid ascent at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, coupled with their daughter’s marriage to an American, changed their plans.

“I want my children to learn English and get to know another culture,” Roberto Moreno quoted his mother as saying. “Let’s go to Florida for a while.”

“A while was supposed to be one or two years,” added Roberto Moreno, who studied engineering at the University of Florida. But their father joined them after four months and took the medical board exams to practice medicine in Florida. “And so we stayed there.”

Mr. Moreno, as a candidate for office, speaks often of the cramped, two-bedroom apartment in Florida where his parents and their seven children first took up residence. That first home, purchased in 1971 with a mortgage worth more than $300,000 in today’s dollars, was a three-bedroom condominium in a new, 15-story high-rise on the ocean in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Moreno campaign aides say he did not intend to leave the impression that he climbed from abject poverty, or that his family’s struggles were protracted. But, they said, the Morenos did face lean times. His campaign declined to make the candidate available for an interview.

Marta Moreno, a businesswoman, preceded her husband to the United States by several months, helping him secure an H1 visa, for highly skilled immigrants, in 1972. (Mr. Moreno’s campaign declined to say what visa Mrs. Moreno held before her husband joined her.) Her name was on the deed to the condominium, along with those of her mother, Tila de Obando, and her stepfather, Jorge Obando.

The building was advertised as having “300 feet of your own private beach,” a “wide deck for sunning,” a pool, a putting green and a sauna.

Within two months, Bernie Moreno’s step-grandfather had lent the family the money to move to a four-bedroom house in Pompano Beach with a pool on a canal, ocean access and a two-car garage.

Dr. Moreno got his medical license in late 1973 and was hired as a surgeon on Nov. 8 of that year. His daughter was engaged to an American in 1976.

“At first, our parents weren’t on the same page, as our father wanted to stay in Colombia,” explained Vicky Stockamore, Bernie Moreno’s older sister. “So while he was hopeful it would be a temporary move, our mother was committed that she wanted to raise her family here.”

Setting the memories of a 5-year-old aside, they said, the two-bedroom apartment of Mr. Moreno’s recollections had a third bedroom only in the generous parlance of a real-estate brochure. A floor plan showed an open room separated from the living room by an accordion door. Even the four-bedroom house was no lap of luxury for a family of nine.

The job of surgical assistant that Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., offered almost apologetically to Dr. Moreno as he studied for his Florida physician’s license paid $10,920 a year, or $80,440 today. That may not be poverty wages, but it is not a lot on which to raise seven children.

“He was making $5 an hour as a surgical assistant,” Mr. Moreno has told voters, accurately. “My mom would have us at the flea market, selling Colombian trinkets on Saturdays.”

Their mother believed in hard work, Roberto Moreno said. When he and his two older siblings wanted to buy a boat to water-ski, their mother made them save up for part of it. He bagged groceries, another brother delivered newspapers and sold vacuum cleaners, and their sister worked at a bank.

But by October 1973, Dr. Moreno, the candidate’s father, had re-established himself with full privileges as a South Florida surgeon . He was president of the medical staff at Holy Cross Hospital when Mr. Moreno was a teenager, chief of surgery by 1989 and a member of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons. Marta Moreno quickly became a successful real estate agent.

“When we first arrived, it took a lot of hard work for our family to establish ourselves,” Ms. Stockamore said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how my mother and father both restarted their lives.”

In past interviews, Mr. Moreno has captured the contradictions of his childhood. In a podcast before his political career took off, he alluded to just how wealthy his family had been in Colombia and why his mother decided to give up that privilege.

“We were being raised in an entitled way, and she didn’t want us to be raised that way,” he said in the podcast. “So she packed up 23 suitcases, seven kids, and flew to Fort Lauderdale.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police are investigating a troubling trend of luxury cars disappearing from driveways.

Opportunistic thieves are taking advantage of unlocked doors and keys left conveniently inside.

Fort Lauderdale detectives are sounding the alarm and sat down with Local 10 Crime Specialist Bridgette Matter to discuss the soaring rates of car thefts in affluent neighborhoods.

Sergeant Patrick O’Brien of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department has worked cases involving high-end vehicles ranging from Mercedes to Ferraris that are being snatched at an alarming frequency.

The ease with which these thieves operate is staggering, preying on a false sense of security among residents.

Detectives say tri-county theft rings are taking high-value cars to sell at a fraction of their cost.

In one case a custom Rolls Royce worth hundreds of thousands was stolen, and in another a Range Rover with an expensive purse inside.

O’Brien said the solution is simple: lock your doors and take your keys inside.

The thefts are creating an overwhelming amount of work for the police department who say thefts are happening daily.

Police are asking anyone who may recognize someone in the surveillance videos to come forward.
