Dubrovnik - Private Travel

Along the cobblestone streets of this ancient walled city, visitors to Croatia find a treasure trove of antiquity alongside modern luxury.

Famous for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, Dubrovnik hums with activity, yet with a pace that never overpowers the travelling experience. And with Old Town being a car-free zone, you have the run of the place. The limestone-paved Stradun is the main pedestrian thoroughfare, a 13th-century walk back in

time lined with shops and restaurants. In Luza Square at one end of the Stradun sits the renowned Clock Tower originally built in 1444. It keeps good company with many other iconic landmarks here, including the 16th-century Sponza Palace, the celebrated Cathedral, which maintains masterpieces by both Croatian and Italian artists, and the Rector’s Palace, once the seat of government and now a must-do museum. For a difference perspective, a cable-car trip to the top of Mount Srd delivers a picture-perfect view of town and the remains of Fort Imperial, particularly beautiful at sunset. Various private tours reach deep into Dubrovnik’s past, but the city has a glamorous side, too: Game of Thrones walking tours take you to sites of “King’s

Landing,” including the Jesuit Stairs. The entire Dalmatian Coast never fails to dazzle, but the tranquility of Dubrovnik’s pebbled beaches in particular is unparalleled. For a quiet moment, head to Banje Beach is just east of Old Town, or Lapad Beach, a short cab ride northwest of the city centre. You’ll be smitten with this ancient city from your first steps along the top of the 16th-century stone walls that surround it. With a view of the terracotta rooftops and the glistening Adriatic Sea beyond, visitors drink in Dubrovnik with pleasure.

The Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik

Famed for its 16 th -century stone walls, its picturesque setting on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, and its frequent appearances as King’s Landing in Game of Thrones , the ancient port city of Dubrovnik is one of the most inspiring destinations to visit in Croatia .

Dubrovnik’s long history stretches back millennia, and the iconic red roofs and stone architecture have become an enduring symbol of Croatia’s sunny Mediterranean coastline. You can lose yourself for days in the maze of alleyways, fortifications, and plazas that make up the Stari Grad (the Old Town), and you’ll find yourself drawn ever deeper into the layers of history and heritage dating back to at least the 7th century AD.

At the end of the day, you’ll love unwinding in one of Dubrovnik’s spectacular luxury hotels and resorts that dot the city’s coast. If you’re planning a Croatian getaway, then keep reading to learn more about where to stay in Dubrovnik.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: Best Luxury Hotels

Dubrovnik is best known for its Old Town, and while this might be the ideal location for historic boutique hotels, there are few accommodation options within the stone walls themselves. There are some gloriously converted townhouses, some dating back to the 16th century and earlier, complete with red roofs and panoramic terraces. But you need to book early to secure a room!

The majority of the best hotels in Dubrovnik are found along the coast, east and west of the Old Town. Luxury resorts and boutique villas are built into the cliffs, often offering views of the city walls as well as direct access to the beaches below. You won’t be staying inside the walls, but you’ll be living in luxury. Plus, the main gates are just a short stroll away!

A bit further afield, the Lapad and Babin Kuk peninsulas to the west of the Old Town have become one of the best locations in Croatia for a beach vacation. You’ll find infinity swimming pools, Michelin recommended restaurants, and luxury resort-style hotels built along the cliffs and beaches.

To inspire your trip to the Croatian coastline , here’s our list of the best hotels in Dubrovnik!

The 12 Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik

1. hotel dubrovnik palace.

Unique Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

From your private balcony at the 5-star Hotel Dubrovnik Palace , you’ll feel like royalty as you gaze across the emerald Adriatic Sea toward the Elaphiti Islands along the gorgeous coastline. This is Dubrovnik’s stunning Lapad Peninsula, and you couldn’t have picked a more luxurious resort for your stay!

You’ll love how Hotel Dubrovnik Palace is set far away from the crowds. The hotel is right at the secluded tip of the peninsula, and while it’s a 20-minute drive to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the natural setting is simply supreme.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

There are two outdoor swimming pools overlooking the ocean. You can easily spend all day soaking up the sun on the clifftop terraces while ordering up ice-cold beers and cocktails. There’s also an indoor pool at the spa, where you can enjoy the refreshing delights of a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, and Turkish-style bath.

Book a table at the Taverna Maslina for seafood platters and freshly grilled fish, or make the most of the Mediterranean buffet dinners at the Elafiti Restaurant, where the views are outstanding.

The sunset lounge serves up drinks and live piano music late into the evening, and after a long day of resort-style vacationing, you’ll have a luxury sea view room with all the trimmings of a modern hotel to relax in.

2. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

Cool Dubrovnik Hotels: Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

The Hilton Imperial is one of the most unique hotels in Dubrovnik. It might be owned and managed by an international hotel chain, but this historic hotel has all the character of a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel.

The exterior of the Hilton Imperial is almost like a scene from a Wes Anderson movie. The grand hotel rises high above the surrounding buildings, framed by the mountains behind it and highlighted by the colorful balconies and bright red rooftop. The building has been updated, of course, but it originally dates back to 1897, and that old-world charm still resonates throughout the hotel.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

The Hilton Imperial is just a few hundred meters from the ancient gates of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. From your luxury hotel room, you’ll have wonderful views over the historic walls and towers and far out across the Adriatic Sea. The rooms are smart, bright, and colorful, and you’ll love how the carefully selected modern decor fuses seamlessly with the 19th-century architecture.

That style continues at the Imperial Bar and Lounge, where many 19th-century furnishings have been carefully restored and many more antique features added. You can even enjoy historic cocktails from the heritage-inspired drinks menu that would have been served back in 1897!

After a centuries-old beverage, head to the Imperial Terrace, where you can enjoy a delectable dinner of Dalmatian dishes prepared by head chef Julija Basic. The menu at this renowned restaurant focuses on providing diners with local dishes prepared using local ingredients. And if you’ve got time, don’t forget there’s an indoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and spa facilities to enjoy in your downtime at the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik.

3. St Joseph’s

Best Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: St Joseph’s

You’re going to love St Joseph’s , and that’s because this beautiful boutique hotel is one of the very few hotels that’s actually located within the Old Town. This is one for history lovers!

Book a luxury room here, and you’ll be staying right in the center of centuries of history and heritage in the heart of ancient Dubrovnik. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by red-roofed townhouses, cobblestone streets, and stone walls.

St Joseph’s is found within a 16th-century building that’s been masterfully restored and lovingly updated in recent years. There are just six boutique rooms, all of which are deluxe in design and tasteful in decor.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: St Joseph’s

Each room has a small kitchenette, but you’ll still be served a hearty St Joseph’s breakfast in your room every morning. It’s a great way to start the day! After fueling up, you can stroll out of the hotel and quickly lose yourself in the maze of alleyways and hidden plazas that Dubrovnik’s Old Town is so famous for.

Book the adjacent bungalow for your family, and you’ll head even further back in time. St Joseph’s Cottage is located within a historic Dubrovnik house, which is thought to have been built as far back as the 13th century.

4. Rixos Premium Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Boutique Hotels: Rixos Premium Dubrovnik

If you’re looking for beachfront luxury, look no further than the Rixos Premium . It’s one of the best 5-star choices in Dubrovnik!

This glamorous hotel is perched on high cliffs overlooking the Adriatic. Be sure to upgrade to a Seaview Room purely for the uninterrupted ocean panoramas from your private balcony.

Rooms at the Rixos Premium are minimalist but stylish, and you’ll love the spacious layouts that allow the sea breeze to circulate freely. Everything about your room is ultra-luxe, but at this hotel, you won’t have much time to spend lounging in bed!

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Rixos Premium Dubrovnik

Instead, you’re going to want to spend your day hanging out around the outdoor freshwater swimming pool. If you prefer a salty sea swim, then descend the ladders down to Libertas Beach, where you can enjoy a refreshing ocean dip beneath the cliffs.

The Rixos Premium is home to Dubrovnik’s largest casino. There are regular jazz concerts and fireworks shows, and you’ll want to spend at least one full day pampering yourself at the Anjana Spa.

If you’re a foodie, then you’re going to be spoiled for choice at this hotel. You’ll have three gourmet restaurants to choose from, and that means a different style of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Turquoise Restaurant serves up Croatian specialties, Libertas Fish Restaurant offers fresh seafood with a view, and Umi Teppanyaki is Dubrovnik’s ultimate Asian fusion experience.

5. Boutique Hotel Kazbek

Cool Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Boutique Hotel Kazbek

Boutique Hotel Kazbek is a classic Dubrovnik townhouse that’s been converted into upscale accommodation for luxury-seeking tourists. Book a stay at this beautiful boutique hotel, and you’ll have the pleasure of staying in a converted, 16 th -century villa that comes complete with the iconic red roof and white stone walls that the city is so famous for.

This is a hotel that’s brimming with history, so if you’re looking for heritage, then this is one of the coolest boutique hotels in Dubrovnik. Boutique Hotel Kazbek was originally built as a summer getaway for a wealthy noble family and has been entertaining guests since 1573!

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Boutique Hotel Kazbek

Antique furnishings, retro decor, and a personal coat of arms in every room help to preserve this unique sense of heritage. You’ll appreciate the modern upgrades, though, including the “Smart Room System” that includes seamless television and air conditioning controls.

Outside, you can spend your days swimming in the outdoor pool or lounging on the sunbeds. Or, as if Dubrovnik isn’t already warm enough, you can sweat it out in the sauna.

Because there are only 12 rooms and one suite, Boutique Hotel Kazbek can offer personalized service to every guest. One of the coolest features of this hotel is the private dining experience. The hotel’s chefs serve up a gourmet menu that includes wild boar fillets, Adriatic fish soup, and Istrian pasta with black truffles in a beautiful setting.

6. The Pucic Palace

Best Dubrovnik Hotels: The Pucic Palace

The Pucic Palace Hotel is one of the most unique boutique hotels in Dubrovnik. This historic hotel dates back to the 17th century and is set right in the heart of the Old Town. The baroque facade stands tall among the red-roofed townhouses and from the window of your luxurious room, you’ll have an exceptional view over Dubrovnik’s historic skyline.

Marvel at Dubrovnik’s centuries-old stone towers, spires, and gatehouses from the comfort of your plush double bed. You’ll be amazed by the elegant decor inside the room, which is made up of as many preserved period features and antique furnishings as possible.

Unique Dubrovnik Hotels: The Pucic Palace

The floors are made from darkened oak, works of art adorn the walls, and the thick curtains wouldn’t be out of place in a medieval bedchamber. Even the bathrooms are tiled with history, as they are all lined with beautiful Romanesque mosaic tiles that only serve to add to the hotel’s charming historical character.

You can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, fresh mint teas, and strong Turkish-style coffee on the terrace at La Capella, the hotel’s al fresco restaurant, or sit out in the square at Cafe Royal and enjoy fresh fish from the Adriatic right in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

7. Hotel More

Unique Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel More

At Hotel More you can take things underground, because this stylish boutique hotel is world-renowned for its subterranean cave bar! The hotel is built on top of the high, rocky cliffs of the Lapad Peninsula, but during construction, workers knocked through into an unknown yet extensive cave system below the surface. Rather than boarding up the entrance, Hotel More decided to turn the caves into a unique bar and cocktail lounge that is quite unlike anywhere else in Dubrovnik.

Enjoy an underground drink when you first arrive, but remember, the Cave Bar is just the start. There’s much more to this boutique hotel, including the fiery sunsets over the Adriatic, the clifftop swimming pools, and the effortless modernity of the luxury rooms. The best suites at Hotel More offer private terraces, and if you upgrade to the Deluxe Suite, you’ll have a private hydro-massage Jacuzzi all to yourself.

Boutique Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel More

There are two restaurants to choose from at Hotel More. The first is Restaurant More, where you’ll enjoy Mediterranean delicacies with a stunning view over the ocean. The second is Restaurant Tramuntana, where Adriatic fish is served with perfect pairings of the best Croatian wine.

8. Boutique Hotel Stari Grad

Best Dubrovnik Hotels: Boutique Hotel Stari Grad

There are very few hotels located within the historic town walls of Dubrovnik, but one of the best options you can check into is Boutique Hotel Stari Grad . Named after the Old Town itself – Stari Grad literally means Old Town in Croatian – this is a hotel that’s guaranteed to be packed with heritage and culture.

Start your day with a Mediterranean breakfast on the rooftop, as you enjoy fresh juice and coffee with a view over the red roofs of old Dubrovnik. You can head back down to the Lobby Bar for refreshments throughout the day, but be sure to go back to the rooftop again for dinner, when a fine dining menu is served by the Michelin guide recognized Above 5 Restaurant team in the evening.

Unique Dubrovnik Hotels: Boutique Hotel Stari Grad

The hotel was originally built in the 16th century to be the townhouse of a wealthy noble family. You’ll find that this wealth of character has been preserved throughout the hotel. Rooms are definitely modern and up to date but they also retain important period features such as those tall, bright Dubrovnik-style windows!

9. Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Hotel Bellevue is set in an unbeatable location, perched beautifully on the cliffs above the azure waters of Miramare Bay, just a short walk from the Old Town. This is one of the best boutique hotels in Dubrovnik, and you’ll love how the hotel has been carved straight from the rocks that it sits on.

The stylishly sleek rooms at Hotel Bellevue offer addictive panoramas over the Adriatic Sea, and you’ll struggle to pull yourself away from the bright floor-to-ceiling windows and private balcony.

Cool Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Head to the heated, indoor swimming pool, and you’ll be rewarded with equally panoramic scenes as you swim next to the glass wall and under the glass ceiling. Enjoy the view from the hot tub, sit back in a sun lounger, or turn up the heat with a Finnish-style sauna session at the spa.

Wine and seafood lovers will find much to enjoy at Hotel Bellevue. The hotel’s aptly named Wine Bar has 180 different wines to sample, while the open-air Spice Lounge serves up cocktails and coffees.

Down at the pebble beach, Nevera Restaurant specializes in fresh Adriatic fish. Head to the Michelin-recommended Vapor Restaurant on top of the cliffs for excellent local dishes prepared with local seasonal ingredients.

10. Hotel Excelsior

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Hotel Excelsior

You’ll quickly find that Hotel Excelsior is far more than just another 5-star hotel because this Dubrovnik landmark is one of the most famous resorts on the Adriatic. The long list of exalted guests that have spent the night here is impressive. You’ll even be following in the footsteps of Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who once spent a night here!

You’ll love how Hotel Excelsior is a place of contrasts. The oldest wing of the hotel dates back to 1913, and while it’s certainly modern in terms of amenities and features, it’s historic in character and appearance. Rooms here are furnished with hand-picked antiques, custom-crafted furniture, and all sorts of stylish retro touches.

Dubrovnik Boutique Hotels: Hotel Excelsior

The newest wing is completely different, offering ultra-modern suites in a standout glass-lined tower that rises high above the Adriatic. You’ll have sea views, stylish bathrooms, and minimalist yet stylish decor.

Take an easy stroll down to the beach for a relaxing dip in the sea, or book a session at the wellness center for the ultimate self-care session. You’ll love the indoor swimming pool, whirlpools, Finnish sauna, and Turkish bath, not to mention the multitude of spa treatments available.

Hotel Excelsior has no less than three restaurants and a piano bar for your dining and drinking pleasure. You’ll have a Mediterranean-style breakfast at Restaurant Salin, while Prora Restaurant serves up a seafood lunch and dinner of fresh lobster and scallops. The culinary highlight is a fine dining experience at Sensus Restaurant, where you can enjoy lobster tortellini and perfectly paired wines.

11. Villa Dubrovnik

Cool Hotels Dubrovnik Croatia: Villa Dubrovnik

Even among the fabulous hotels and glamorous boutique hotels of Dubrovnik, Villa Dubrovnik offers a stand-out setting and an unbeatable location. This five-star hotel is built in a seemingly precarious location above the Adriatic, perched on tops of low-lying cliffs that directly overlook the crashing waves below. It’s beautiful, and it’s the perfect base from which to explore the Croatian coastline.

This luxe hotel is ultra-modern. If that’s your style then you’ll love the contemporary architecture and design that’s found throughout the property. The hotel aims to evoke a sense of nautical aesthetics, and you’ll see that instantly in the clean contours of the facade and in the sleek white decor and smooth wood details in the luxury rooms.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Villa Dubrovnik

You’ll have glorious sea views from your balcony, while the indoor swimming pool and sun terrace offer an unbeatable panorama. You can refresh and revitalize at Villa Spa, where Dalmatian herbs and Mediterranean oils are used in an array of healing treatments.

Take an alfresco seat at Bar Giardino for an equally refreshing cocktail, and remember to book a table at the Michelin-recommended Restaurant Pjerin, where head chef Robert Racic serves up risotto, spaghetti, and scallops with a gourmet twist.

12. Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection

Where to stay in Dubrovnik Croatia: Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection

The Dubrovnik President Valamar is one of the most impressive 5-star resorts anywhere in Croatia. This is an icon of the Adriatic, and the tiered rooms and suites that sweep down from the cliffs to the beach are instantly recognizable from any Croatian tourist brochure. There’s a reason this place is regarded as one of the best hotels in Dubrovnik!

This is classic vacation territory, but you can’t beat the luxury of this high-end hotel. The Dubrovnik President Valamar offers guests a supreme beachside location on the Babin Kuk Peninsula. One of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the world

Glimmering on the Adriatic coast, enchanting Dubrovnik is  Croatia ’s most up-market destination. Lauded by George Bernard Shaw as “Paradise on Earth”, the city delights with its Mediterranean-style culture and the marbled streets of its UNESCO World Heritage old town.

As one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the world, Dubrovnik’s old town is surrounded by sturdy fortifications that stretch for almost two kilometres, punctuated by two monumental arched gates and frequent turrets and towers. Inside you’ll discover pedestrianised cobbled streets lined by Renaissance buildings which open onto aristocratic squares featuring elegant Baroque churches. Stroll down the main street, Stradun, and you’ll be greeted with countless cafes and restaurants, each perfect for a coffee and a spell of people watching.

Thanks to its position on the Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik also boasts many beaches where you can pleasantly pass a day sunbathing and taking a dip in the pristine and calm Adriatic. While you’re here, it goes without saying that you can look forward to dining on the freshest of seafood. Venture out into Dubrovnik’s Bay, and you’ll encounter the 72-hectare wooded island of Lokrum where according to legend, Richard the Lionheart was cast ashore after being shipwrecked.

Written By: ThePlanetD Team

Updated On: February 8, 2024

When you think of Dubrovnik, you envision an old town that offers discreet luxury. This image is relatively accurate. Dubrovnik’s medieval walls rising from the Adriatic Sea cut such a beautiful sight that they attract everyone from tourists to Hollywood producers. There are luxury hotels in Dubrovnik hidden by old city walls and walking distance from the best restaurants and iconic attractions – like the Dubrovnik cable car. Dubrovnik is perfect for combining seaside relaxation with cultural sightseeing. And the sheer amount of luxury hotels makes it a dreamy five-star destination.

In this guide, we’ll cover the ultimate luxury hotels in Dubrovnik. Whether you want one of the leading hotels in the city center or an outskirt boutique hotel opening onto a pebble beach, Dubrovnik is overflowing with luxury.

Best Areas to Stay in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Best Areas to Stay in Dubrovnik

Before we get into the best luxury hotels in Dubrovnik, it’s vital to get a grasp of the city layout. We already have a complete guide on  where to stay in Dubrovnik , area by area. However, we will quickly summarise to provide you with a quick overview. Dubrovnik is best explained by splitting it into four sections that encompass six neighborhoods: Old Town, Pile, Ploce, Gruz, Lapad, or Babin Kuk. If you scroll to the bottom of this post, we have a clear breakdown of each neighborhood.

1. Hotel Dubrovnik Palace

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel Dubrovnik palace

Regarding facilities,  Hotel Dubrovnik Palace  is one of the most impressive Dubrovnik luxury hotels. This Lapad-based luxury hotel has a private beach and a scuba diving center. Hotel Dubrovnik Palace also has an outdoor swimming pool, indoor swimming pool, fitness center, spa, and wellness center with a steam room. Seriously, any hotel with its own scuba diving center deserves its five stars – and the facilities at Hotel Dubrovnik are what bagged it its spot on our guide. The laidback beach vibe of Lapad is just the cherry on top.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel Dubrovnik palace Room

All guest rooms are furnished with earthy color palettes and minimalistic decor. Guests get a private balcony in every room choice, most of which have Elaphite Islands views. And even when you do wish to venture out of the hotel, the bus to the Old Town leaves from directly outside. Hotel Dubrovnik Palace is top of our list of the best luxury hotels in Dubrovnik.

2. Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik

Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik  is our vote for one of the best hotels in Dubrovnik for a light, airy aesthetic. This boutique hotel has a nautical theme, with white, coastal-inspired furnishings throughout each room. This design scheme makes Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik one of the city’s best hotels for guests wanting a serene-feeling hotel. Plus, given that the boutique hotel is set on a sea cliff above Miramare Bay, the nautical theme is fitting to look over the ocean. Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik is luxurious without trying too hard – which we love.

Facilities are also worth discussing for this luxe boutique hotel. Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik has an indoor pool, access to a pebble beach, a wine bar with over 180 wines, and an a la carte restaurant. It also firmly ticks the spa and wellness center boxes, providing a gym and spa with a sauna. Located between the Old Town and Pile, it is ideally situated for some peace and quiet yet within walking distance of the city walls.

3. Royal Palm Hotel

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Royal Palm Hotel

Royal Palm Hotel  is the most modern of the leading hotels in Dubrovnik. The hotel features white and bright guest rooms with air conditioning and floor-to-ceiling windows in most rooms. Royal Palm Hotel is located in the Babin Kuk neighborhood – amongst the beach life and more laidback Dubrovnik way of living. However, it retains a sense of inner-city hospitality, which we liked.

Breakfast is available each morning at the a la carte restaurant. The wellness center at Royal Palm Hotel is a generous size. You can book in for spa treatments and there’s a fitness center to challenge yourself to a workout. The best part of its facilities is the huge sun terrace – ideal for embracing your inner lizard and reclining on a lounger with a good book. From Royal Palm Hotel’s sun terrace, you have views over the Adriatic Sea and a wine bar to treat yourself to an alcoholic beverage. It has all the modern comforts but the laidback beach locale as well. A blissful compromise for the modern luxury hotel seeker.

4. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Croatia Hilton Imperial

Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik  is one of our top luxury hotels in Dubrovnik. This luxury hotel looks nothing short of regal. Hotel Imperial Dubrovnik juts out from miles of forest and smaller orange-roofed buildings. The historic five-star hotel is a multi-story masterpiece dating back to 1897. It is located on the outskirts of Ploce. The trendy, just-out-of-grasp location is a quieter alternative to the frantic tourist mecca of the Old Town – and just a short walk from major attractions. Its iconic appeal is why we couldn’t miss out on adding the Hilton Imperial to our guide to the best luxury hotels.

You won’t be surprised to learn that Hilton Imperial has fantastic facilities. The lobby bar, lounge, and terrace have views over the city walls and afternoon tea for anyone with a sweet tooth. A spa and wellness center is a given for luxury like this, as is an indoor pool. The 19th-century architectural style has been maintained throughout each room, and spending a day relaxing in Hilton Imperial is beautiful.

5. Villa Dubrovnik

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Villa Dubrovnik

Villa Dubrovnik  is an exceptional boutique hotel just outside Ploce – the trendy outer neighborhood we discussed earlier. The glitzy white hotel straddles a cliff that half hangs over the ocean. As far as scenic locations go, Villa Dubrovnik pulls the top trump. It is no wonder that it is ranked as one of Dubrovnik’s best boutique hotels. We were struck by its location, aesthetic, and other vital aspects – like the complimentary car transfers to the Old Town. The summer transfers overcome the only negative of staying in Ploce, meaning you get easy access to the Old Town and peace and quiet.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Villa Dubrovnik View

Inside Villa Dubrovnik, an onsite restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine and breakfast. A stunning library room and lounge have comfy furnishings like sink-into-the-fabric-style armchairs. The hotel uses a fantastic balance of indoor and outdoor space too. For instance, featuring an indoor pool that extends into an outdoor terrace with parasols and sun beds. Guest rooms have private terraces and balconies.

6. Hotel Excelsior

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel Excelsior

Nothing is standard about  Hotel Excelsior. It is as much a local landmark as it is one of the best luxury hotels in Dubrovnik. Full of original artwork and severely elegant, sleek furnishings, Hotel Excelsior is a beautiful place to stay. Hotel Excelsior is a short walk from the old city center. Located smack bang in the middle of Ploce, it’s suitably trendy and ideal if you are looking for an alternative-style luxury hotel experience in Dubrovnik.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel Excelsoir View

Hotel Excelsior is one of the top five-star hotels within walking distance of the Old Town. The hotel has two onsite restaurants and a piano bar. Unfortunately, there are no outdoor pools at Hotel Excelsior. But honestly, Banje Beach (a rock and concrete beach) is so close by that you don’t need one. Besides, with a freshwater indoor pool and spa area with a hammam and hot tubs – it really is a small price. Its location and facilities are what won us over.

7. Boutique Hotel Stari Grad

Boutique Hotel Stari Grad   is one of those boutique hotels that take the plush furnishings route. Everything is indulgent – even down to the hydromassage showers and location in the center of the Old Town. Boutique Hotel Stari Grad is the best option for a boutique hotel within the old city walls. Its rooftop terrace restaurant is the perfect inner-city perch to “wow” your way through an evening of fine dining with a stunning historical backdrop. The hotel perfectly blends new and trendy designs and a timeless, historic setting. Needless to say, we love that.

Only eight guest rooms are available at this property. It books up quickly and has an intimate atmosphere, so if it catches your eye, make a reservation early. All the guest room options are tastefully decorated with cutting-edge but comfortable decor, but bag the junior suite with a balcony if possible. The outdoor space and private view are worth every penny. And if you want a boutique option within the Old Town, Boutique Hotel Stari Grad is easily one of the top hotels located in the city center.

8. The Pucic Palace

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Pucic Palace

Another oldie but goldie,  The Pucic Palace  is a stunning baroque building off the Stradun Promenade in the absolute center of the Old Town. You can get any closer to the city center than this, and the history of the 18th-century building is a serious draw for anyone interested in old-world Dubrovnik. On foot, you are less than 60 seconds away from Dubrovnik Cathedral – an unheard luxury as far as most hotels in Dubrovnik go. The location and historical status of the hotel are nothing short of enchanting. We felt compelled to add it to this guide.

Room choices range from annex rooms with exposed beams to suites with private balconies and whirlpool tubs. For those chasing a more self-catered experience, there are also apartment choices with kitchens. The Pucic Palace has onsite restaurants that – quite literally – spill out onto the street too. You can indulge in al fresco dining in the square or head to the terrace restaurant for a vantage point. While there are no swimming pools, the fact Banje Beach is just a six-minute walk away is a lovely sweetener. The Pucic Palace guests even get complimentary beach towels and sun loungers.

9. Hotel More

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Hotel More

Ready for some real excitement?  Hotel More  has a cave bar. You read that right – a cave with an actual bar inside. The cave bar is Dubrovnik’s quirkiest drinking hole and should definitely feature on a bar crawl through the city. We’ve got to admit that the cave bar initially caught our eye just for the novelty factor. However, Hotel More is just as beautiful in its own right. Built into the slopes that flank the Adriatic Sea, Hotel More overlooks the ocean and is just 2.2 miles from the Old Town. With quiet elegance, it embodies that calming luxury that balances the busyness of the Dubrovnik city center.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik hotel more exterior

The rooms at Hotel More range from classic singles to deluxe suites with sea-view terraces. Family rooms are also available, which is well worth noting if you are a family traveling to Dubrovnik. Some of the more luxe rooms have whirlpool tubs, too, if you fancy splurging on extra luxuries. Hotel More already has an outdoor pool, gym, and fully-equipped spa, though – so you won’t miss out if not. And since it’s located in Lapad, there are plenty of nearby beaches for a relaxing dip.

10. Boutique Hotel Kazbek

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik boutique hotel kazbek

Boutique Hotel Kazbek  was once the home of a local noble family. The property dates back to the 16th century, and its this history that holds most of its allure. While Boutique Hotel Kazbek has been renovated, you can still see the influence of nobility in its architectural design. And there are indulgent nods throughout the property – like king beds in every guest room. It is an impressive building to admire. It certainly has an atmosphere for guests wanting a luxury hotel that’ll leave an impression.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik boutique hotel kazbek room

It isn’t just noble looks either; Boutique Hotel Kazbek has a sauna and outdoor pool for guest enjoyment. It is also located in Gruz Bay – the only hotel in this guide to be here. If you plan boat trips to the surrounding islands, staying in Gruz Bay is brilliant. You have access to the Old Town in just a six-minute drive and doorstep access to the port. Gruz Bay is convenient and pretty glitzy with all the big white yachts and sailboats.

11. Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik valamar collection

Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel  is the megalodon of luxury hotels in Dubrovnik. The five-star property explodes in rows and rows of private terraces. It is the perfect choice for an apartment-style experience. Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel is located in the quiet coastal neighborhood of Babin Kuk with a private beach. It is the sort of high-end hotel that feels hidden away from the chaos of other tourists. A self-contained little hospitality enigma with a pretty pebble beach. We like its secluded location in Babin Kuk.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik valamar collection room

Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel’s standard rooms include breakfast and a terrace or balcony with privacy screens. The hotel also offers superior suites and other more extravagant room choices. And in terms of facilities, there’s a wellness center and a gym – two ticks for the fitness-conscious guests.

12. Grand Villa Argentina

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik grand villa argentina

A five-star hotel sitting on a cliff is the perfect recipe for a luxury hotel in Dubrovnik.  Grand Villa Argentina  is a beautiful property built to overlook the sea. Grand Villa Argentina’s best feature is the outdoor saltwater pool, with sweeping ocean views and Lokrum Island. With private beach access, you might also have two outdoor pools, seeing as you can just hop straight into the sea. Aside from beautiful swimming opportunities, there is a spa with a Finnish sauna, hot tubs, and a gym. Grand Villa Argentina squeezed onto our list for its recreational facilities and poolside views.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik grand villa argentina sea view

Its rooms have contemporary décor – comfortable and spacious. The majority of rooms have sea views, and some have balconies. Set in the trendy neighborhood of Ploce, you won’t spend much time in your room. You are just a 20-minute walk from the Old Town and Dubrovnik’s attractions. And Banje Beach is almost literally on your doorstep.

13. Bota Palace

Top Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik Croatia Bota Palace

Bota Palace  seems robbed of its fifth star. As a boutique hotel, it has oodles of charisma. It has a brilliant sense of style and a wicked location, from the exposed brick walls to the all-white annex rooms. You can gaze out at Stradun (the main street in the famed Old Town) from almost every window. Chic and sleek are the most well-deserved adjectives for Bota Palace’s interior. Still, the location is also a perfect ode to Dubronik’s history. And to fuel all that sightseeing, Bota Palace offers bed and breakfast services, meaning complimentary breakfast each morning.

In terms of guest rooms, you can opt for standard king rooms or apartment-style rooms with kitchens for a self-catered experience. Each room comes with drink-making facilities. The decor is fresh and designed with the modern trend seeker in mind. The two major brownie points are the effortless luxury of this property and its valuable location.

14. Villa Orsula

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik villa orsula

Villa Orsula  is beautiful. People tend to throw around the term ‘old money aesthetic’, but in Villa Orsula’s case, it is truly an apt description. The hotel is all built from chunky old stone, cutting a traditionally elegant picture against the backdrop of the Adriatic Sea. Villa Orsula has extensive sun gardens overlooked by stone terraces and archways. And at night, low lighting illuminates the plant-covered stone property for the ultimate romantic appeal. Villa Orsula’s good looks won us over in a heartbeat.

Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik villa orsula courtyard

Even the standard rooms at Villa Orsula feature peaceful gardens or sublime sea views. It greatly emphasizes visual luxuries, which is a nice touch. The hotel also has a private beach. While no pool is onsite, guests can access an indoor and outdoor pool at the adjoining luxury hotels. Like most leading hotels in Dubrovnik, it has a high-quality spa, too, for a bit of extra day-to-day luxury. Located in trendy Ploce, it has easy access to the Old Town and beaches. There’s a complimentary airport shuttle too, which is always welcome after a tiring flight.

FAQs: Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik

Modern hotel, Dubrovnik, Croatia

The most luxurious place in Croatia is Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik has some of the best five-star hotels in the whole country and an exclusive collection of beaches. The seafood is sublime, and the historic remains of the old city provide a beautiful backdrop for al fresco wining and dining. It is also the ideal place to go island hopping. Dubrovnik has many high-end yachts and sailing boats for a luxury island hopping experience.

Which area of Dubrovnik is best to stay in?

The Old Town is the best area of Dubrovnik to stay in for an old-world atmosphere and luxury hospitality. It is where you’ll find the best high-end restaurants and the most historical views of the old city walls.

  •  Old Town

The Old Town is the classic city center of Dubrovnik. We are talking about cobbles, old town walls, and cultural sightseeing. The Old Town is where most tours depart from and is ideal for first-time visitors who want  that  Game of Thrones- style aesthetic in Dubrovnik.

  •  Pile or Ploce

These two regions are sandwiched on either side of the Old Town. In fact, these neighborhoods are called after the original gate names when Dubrovnik was a functional walled city. Pile or Ploce is a solid compromise on the big crowds and overpriced (dare we say it) restaurants in the Old Town. You get easy access to the Old Town and all  Dubrovnik’s things to do , but a more relaxed experience.

Gruz is the old harbor. It is a reasonably accessible neighborhood to appreciate Dubrovnik’s main attractions. However, its highlight is the number of day trips to  beautiful islands . If you plan to island-hop Croatia, Gruz is an excellent base.

  • Lapad or Babin Kuk

Lapad and Babin Kuk are laidback beach areas outside the slightly hectic Old Town. One major issue with staying inside the Old Town walls is that you don’t get beach access. Many of the luxury hotels in these neighborhoods have a private beach or at least almost doorstep access to the ocean.

Is it expensive to stay in Dubrovnik?

Staying in Dubrovnik hotels is expensive. The city has a high-end reputation and caters to a wealthy crowd with its luxury hotels.

Who owns Royal Resort Dubrovnik?

Dr Ciril Zovko owns the Royal Resort Dubrovnik. Dr. Ciril owns the entire Royal Hotels & Resort chain.

To Conclude

Beautiful Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik

Luxury hotels in Dubrovnik are a heavenly investment in happiness. And as for the city itself, it is easily one of the  most beautiful cities in Europe.  Its city walls and sublime sea views seem practically made for luxury hotels. You’ll have an incredible time picking a luxury hotel in Dubrovnik.

To venture further than Dubrovnik’s Lapad Peninsular, consider these  best things to do in Croatia . Croatia has beautiful places, islands, cities, and cultural attractions. Don’t limit yourself to a single city if you have more than a week.

This private seaside retreat instantly cloaks its guests in laid-back luxury. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea and nestled between Old Town and the majestic island of Lokrum, Villa Agave’s history is as interesting as the thoughtful touches found throughout the property. Antique details and Croatian artists’ works adorn each room of the villa where world-renowned architect Sir Arthur Evans once resided. What’s more, the villa was built upon the remains of the 16th-century chapel of St. Lazarus; take note of the chapel’s original walls in the aptly appointed meditation room. Enjoy a moment—or a nap—on one of the villa’s five terraces and you’ll find yourself dreaming about the incredible view of Old Town, only a 10-minute walk away. For the perfect day of relaxation, stroll through the villa’s gardens featuring the villa’s eponymous succulents, lounge on the private niche on the rocky shoreline below, and indulge in a massage on yet another dreamy terrace.

  • Spectacular Service: The villa offers 24-hour butler service and a private beach and outdoor pool, as well as access to all the five-star services and facilities of Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik.

The best time to visit Dubrovnik

The Adriatic Coast heats up during the summer and along with the sunshine, brings all the sun-seeking tourists.

The best months to visit are during the shoulder season, between April and June and September to October, during these months the crowds are thinner, the sun is shining and the sea is warm enough for bathing, especially in autumn.

Dubrovnik has become a major tourist destination in the past few years and its advisable to get to the town early even during the shoulder seasons.

This will allow you to avoid the teeming crowds of tourists coming off the various cruise ships that stop at the harbour, Croatian attractions open early in the morning so you can have the best sightseeing experience by starting early when attractions open at 8 am.

Luxury things to do in Dubrovnik

Charter a yacht on the adriatic.

One of the biggest draws to Croatia is the stunning Adriatic Sea which is so blue you could lose yourself in the turquoise waters, it is also home to over one thousand islands which can be explored through chartering a private catamaran or yacht .

What better way to spend the day than feel the sea breeze whipping through your air as you cruise to explore the beauty of the nearby islands, avoiding the tourist crowds and tapping into the adventurer within.

Explore the walls and fortresses

The medieval city of Dubrovnik was fortified over the centuries by incredible defensive walls that loom up to a height of 25m, built in the period between the 14 th and 17 th centuries. These impressive walls have kept out invading Ottoman and Venetian armies who sought to capture this strategic seaside city.

The walls join main forts situated around the city called the Revelin Fortress, St. Lawrence Fortress, St. John Fortress and Fort Bokar, as well as the Minceta Tower.

A visit to the walls and the fortresses is a must for history lovers, but it’s best to visit early in the morning as in the summer months the temperatures soar and it may be too hot to explore the walls.

One of the main attractions of Dubrovnik’s Old Town is the ancient fortress walls (the part of town very well known to fans of “Game of Thrones”)

Lose yourself in the Old Town

The beautiful Old Town dating back to the 7 th century is mesmerizing as a journey back into the past, and is the perfect place to lose yourself whilst exploring the winding streets.

You will discover up to 80 churches in the Old Town, but the impressive Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is definitely worth a visit, as well as the St Ignatius Church which was inspired by Rome’s Spanish Steps.

Learn about the history by visiting some of the historical buildings such as the Bell Tower, Sponza Palace and sip a coffee in the plaza of Onofrio’s Fountain and watch the hustle and bustle of life in Dubrovnik.

Game of Thrones fans should visit the Rector’s Palace, built in the 15 th century and with a distinctive gothic influence, you can visit the dungeon and the courtyard and be transported onto the set of your favourite series.

The perfect sundowner

Buža and Buža II are two bars perched on the cliff walls of Dubrovnik. Buža literally means “hole” and are accessed through a hole in the cliff wall.

Check out some of the best views of the sunset from these two hidden bars whilst sipping on some local wine.

This is a popular location for people to cliff jump and dive into the water from the walls of the city so you may see some daredevil action from the locals.

DUBROVNIK, CROATIA - Buza beach cafe at night. It is one of the most beautiful bars in Dubrovnik which is hanged on the cliffs right above the sea, with an amazing view of the Adriatic.

Travel to Lokrum Island

This Island is situated only a few hundred metres from the main city and is well worth a visit, especially if you go by private charter or by kayak.

The island is home to the ruins of a medieval monastery with peaceful gardens patrolled by peacocks. Lokrum Island looks familiar as it was the film location of the city of Qarth in the series, Game of Thrones.

You can also swim in the “dead sea” a salt-water lake in the centre of the island where you can float and drift on the surface. Of course, you can also swim in the warm waters of the Adriatic and there are various entry points into the water from the Eastern shore of the island.

Though the island isn’t inhabited there are some restaurants on the island where you can dine after a busy day of exploring on foot, as cars are not permitted anywhere on the island.

If you’re looking for an active day out, go on a kayaking tour of Lokrum Island and enjoy the opportunity to explore hidden coves and caves, snorkel the clear waters and enjoy some delicious Dalmatian food at the end at a local restaurant. Prices start at 135

Take in the views from a cable car

Dubrovnik recently added a cable car to their attractions and this is the perfect way to catch aerial views of the Old Town and the coastline.

The cable car departs from the northern part of the Old Town and goes to a panorama bar and restaurant at the top of Mount Srđ. The journey, though only four minutes long, is well worth it.

Wine lovers rejoice

Dubrovnik is blessed by its proximity to the wine-growing area of Pelješac. Wine tours to Pelješac where you will visit vineyards, eat at a quaint restaurant in a charming village and visit the oyster beds where you can taste the freshest local oysters on a day to remember.

Sand, sun and swim

Visit the local beaches in Dubrovnik to enjoy a lazy day of sunbathing and cooling off in the clear waters of the Adriatic.

Banje is the closest beach to the city and though it is quite crowded it is still a pleasant and convenient beach to go to. If you’re looking for more privacy, head to Sveti Jakov to enjoy the beach away from the crowds.

Explore the caves

Take an island tour to the Elafiti Islands where you can discover stunning caves which can be accessed only by swimming into them, visit the breathtaking Blue Cave where the turquoise reflection of the water makes the whole cave shimmer in blue light.

Visit the Lokrum cave, where you can snorkel and see the local marine life or if you love heights, Betina Cave offers some spectacular cave diving. A full-day private tour of Dubrovniks caves including all transportation and transfers.

Celebrate the summer

Dubrovnik’s  Summer Festival attracts thousands of tourists annually to the city and is the highlight of the year. The whole city fills with music, culture and art and is a must if you love culture and want to experience it for yourself.

You will see street theatre and enjoy free music with ballet performances, opera and orchestras bringing the city to life. The festival is held in September and you will fall in love with the lively energy of the city and its warm summer nights of music and culture.

REVIEW OF VILLA DUBROVNIK: PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • Almost six decades of hospitality have made Villa Dubrovnik the best luxury hotel in Dubrovnik . The city of Dubrovnik – often dubbed The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ – is situated on the Dalmatian coast and became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667 and again in the 1990s by armed conflict, Dubrovnik has been beautifully restored to its former splendor, earning it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Completely surrounded with medieval defensive walls, the magnificent city houses beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains.
  • Set below a road and secluded in maritime pines, the hotel is situated on the eastern edge of Dubrovnik, right on the Dalmatian Coast , with beautiful views towards the islet of Lokrum and onto the medieval town walls across the water. The property is just over a mile (1.6 km) from the historic walls that protect the city’s Old Town and complimentary shuttle service (with a fixed time schedule) is provided to guests. The property is also a short walk to Sveti Jakov Beach, one of the most picturesque bathing spots in the region. Close by guests will also find the lookout point at Orsula Park, with spectacular views of the tiny bay, Lokrum Island, the city and beyond.
  • Set into the cliffs, Villa Dubrovnik cascades down a steep hillside towards the shimmering waters of the Adriatic Sea. Upon arrival at the property, guests are whisked away into a glass elevator at street level and swept down to a courtyard lined by a spectacular tall stone wall, which gives way to the hotel’s spotless white and light-filled reception area. Here, clean, nautical lines evoke an ambiance of understated refinement and a mood of calm tranquility. Overall, the pristine white architecture and the minimalist modern interior design provide a stunning contrast to the rocky landscape and emerald green waters of the sea.
  • Villa Dubrovnik features 55 guest rooms & suites , each with a sea-view terrace. Suites have the added luxury of more space and an in-room whirlpool tub or an outdoor hot tub. During my visit, I stayed in a deluxe room on the hotel’s second floor. The room featured a kingsize bed, an en-suite bathroom in glass (with double vanity and bathtub), and a balcony with views of the Adriatic sea and Island of Lokrum. The room’s smart contemporary decor was highlighted by a neutral color palette, modern furnishings, and wood detailing (e.g. parquet floor, terrace in gorgeous teak). The room bathed in natural light because of a panoramic glass wall.
  • Villa Dubrovnik also features three large apartments – called Villa Kolin Suites – which are located in a separate structure on the property, immersed in nature. With their own private entrances, these apartments feel like a villas within a villa and have three bedrooms and four bathrooms. Each residence is set over three floors and features a secluded terrace in teak furnished with a Jacuzzi and sun canopy. Villa Dubrovnik’s top accommodation, Villa Dubrovnik Royal Suite , also deserves a special mention. This suite is individually decorated with luxury details and offers a spacious lounge, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
  • Spread over two floors, the hotel’s spa – called Villa Spa – aims at revitalizing its guests’ body and spirit with a selection of beauty treatments that mix Mediterranean cures with innovative techniques. Spa staff utilizes a range of ingredients, including the flowers of the locally grown immortelle plant, to achieve smooth, glowing skin. The spa offering includes the popular Villa Spa Diamond System, a cocoon-like waterbed treatment combined with chromotherapy to banish stress. The spa also features a large indoor pool (opens onto a terrace with sun loungers and parasols), several saunas, and a well-equipped fitness center.
  • At its base, the hotel’s main building is surrounded by a series of stone terraces, shaded by Aleppo pines and Mediterranean cypresses, which are great for lounging, enjoying an al fresco breakfast (more on that below), or simply soaking in the tranquil environment. These terraces lead down via stone steps to the hotel’s private ‘beach’ on the Adriatic Sea. The beach is not really a sandy beach, but rather a rocky outcrop which comprises several white and concrete platforms equipped with chic loungers and sun umbrellas. The setting offers privacy and breathtaking views of the Adriatic. Steps provide easy access into the sea.
  • Pjerin Restaurant is the hotel’s fine dining venue, featuring a contemporary dining room with outdoor terrace. Pjerin serves creative Mediterranean fare, such as homemade artichoke-and-ricotta ravioli and rabbit fillet with hazelnuts and wild mushrooms. The à la carte breakfast is also served at Pjerin, with delights such as Eggs Julia, a special take on Eggs Benedict served with salmon.
  • Al Fresco Giardino is an outdoor bistro, set against the historical parapet that overlooks the hotel’s rocky beach. Open during lunchtime only, Al Fresco Giardino offers light fare that ranges from Sicilian shrimp with creamy guacamole to handmade spaghetti with lobster.
  • For an unforgettable sundowner after a day’s outing or a nightcap before bed guests may retreat to the hotel’s stunning rooftop bar . The space is decorated with comfortable sofas under a canopied pagoda. The menu offers a wide variety of cocktails – try the house special – and a selection of top quality cured meats, including Iberian ham and prosciutto prepared in cellars by Croatian producers in Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.
  • The Library Lounge – located next to Pjerin – is the perfect location for guests in search of a quiet corner to curl up with a book or sanctuary from the sun. Decorated in soothing neutral colors of white and gray, the space has a selection of reading material and includes an outdoor terrace with light-colored chairs and sun umbrellas.

REVIEW OF VILLA DUBROVNIK: CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Villa Dubrovnik is the best luxury hotel in Dubrovnik. It offers an excellent seafront setting, great facilities, and wonderful views towards Dubrovnik’s old town. When you consider a stay here, you need to know the following though:

  • The hotel is not located in Dubrovnik’s historic center (which is a blessing, given how crowded the town is in summer). Complimentary shuttle service to the old town’s east gate is provided though (with a fixed time schedule) and only takes around 5 minutes.
  • The property is tucked down some particularly narrow streets , which makes it not very convenient (and even dangerous) to walk to town, especial at night (because the streets are not well lit). If you have your own car, you will have to navigate the narrow streets, but there’s good private parking once you arrive at the hotel.
  • As mentioned above, the hotel’s private beach is a rocky outcrop with direct access to the sea and with several terraces that feature loungers and sun umbrellas. Don’t expect a sandy beach or shallow water . Also, service at the beach is very slow and not on par with the hotel’s otherwise outstanding service.
  • Though all rooms have their own balcony, some are more private than others and the garden suites and Villa Kolin suites don’t have sea views . Also, those rooms that come with sea views don’t always enjoy open panoramas because of some all pine trees right in front of the hotel (which provide some welcome shade in the hot summer days).
  • While the rooms are decently sized, the bathrooms are rather small (especially for the price you pay) and have some design flown such as a the deep soaking bathtub which doubles as a rain shower, making it difficult (and dangerous) to get in and out. Also, the bathrooms feature a see-through glass wall (which can be partially closed by a curtain), so there’s not much privacy if you are sharing the room with a friend, although it’s still awesome of course to wash your face in the morning while watching the Adriatic.
  • Villa Dubrovnik is the area’s most exclusive property, which is reflected in its rates as it’s a very expensive hotel . The rate for the entrance room category is almost 700 euros per night in high season. Iif it wasn’t for being in Dubrovnik, the hotel would not be able to charge half of what it gets away with now (but I guess that’s true for most hotels in the Dubrovnik area).
  • There are varying  minimum stay restrictions from June until September .

REVIEW OF VILLA DUBROVNIK: BEST TIME TO VISIT

September and October are the best months to visit Dubrovnik: there are les tourists as most of the cruise ships have abandoned the port and the weather is still great with balmy, sunny days. The water remains warm for these two months, so it’s a great time to dip into the sea rather than your savings. The peak season – the summer of June, Juy and August – has arguably the nicest weather but the small town struggles to meet the demand of the large visitor influx and hotel rates soar. Prices go down from October through April, but so will the temperatures and the beach appeal.

I stayed here a number of years ago and your review mirrors my experience though there was room for improvement with restaurant service.

Did they end the daytime boat transfers to Dubrovnik? It was a really nice short ride to town.

Review: Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel

Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel

Located in croatia, style & character, service & facilities, food & drink.

Dubrovnik, “the pearl of the Adriatic,” is an awe-inducing historic city on the sparkling Adriatic Sea. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town’s marble pedestrian streets, aristocratic castles, Baroque churches, and pristine beaches draw visitors from around the world.

Take a direct flight on British Airways from London to Dubrovnik and arrive within a couple of hours. Fast and convenient, Dubrovnik is an easy trip for business or the perfect weekend getaway.

Located between the airport and the city of Dubrovnik, the Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera is contemporary and stylish with smart, modern furnishing. It is equipped with conference rooms for business travelers and is spacious enough for families.

A peaceful respite from the bustle of the city, relax after a day of sightseeing or work at this quiet seaside resort.

The hotel has 251 elegant rooms and suites, all with floor-to-ceiling doors leading to a balcony. Classic rooms overlook the ground’s lush gardens, and Deluxe rooms and Suites boast magnificent ocean views.

Sink into a Signature Sheraton bed, and take an indulgent bubble bath in luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers and bathtubs.

Rejuvenate your body and mind in Shine Spa with a health and beauty treatment from the Sheraton’s professionally trained staff. Feel your worries melt away in the spa’s saunas, jacuzzi, and indoor pool.

Are you an active type? The hotel’s ultra-modern gym, tennis courts, and outdoor pool are guaranteed to meet your fitness needs. Just looking to relax? Soak up some rays in the outdoor sunbathing area.

Dubrovnik is full of history, beauty, gastronomical delights, and national treasures. The city is so iconic that it was used as the location of Kings’ Landing for the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.

The ancient city walls of Dubrovnik and its forts, towers, and bastions were erected to protect the city and its harbor. It is now a beautiful open-air museum visited by locals and tourists alike. Other historical attractions include Dubrovnik’s 20 churches, chapels, and cathedrals.

For beaches, snorkeling, and sailing, visit the nearby island of Lokrum, the Elaphite islands, and Mljet.

If you want to get out of the city, take a casual 20-minute stroll on the Sheraton’s beachfront to Mlini, an enchanting sea village that is considered an oasis of Dubrovnik.

Home to several restaurants and bars, dining at the Sheraton Dubrovnik is an experience in itself.

A breakfast spread is available each morning in the Leut Restaurant, and a dinner buffet in the evenings. Serving a combination of international cuisine and authentic local dishes, enjoy an astonishing view along with your exceptional meal.

The Piano Bar and the Pool Bar Pinija are perfect venues to unwind with carefully crafted beverages devised by the Sheraton’s creative mixologists. The Bar Piano, located right in the hotel lobby, is a cozy meeting place for coffee and chat. Take in breathtaking Adriatic sea views over a cocktail at Pool Bar Pinija.

Explore the exquisite cuisine in the new a la carte restaurant Lungo Mare, nested just in front of the clear blue sea.

Perched on a verdant hillside, the villa gazes out on breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea from ample outdoor living areas and superbly adorned interiors. Two distinct buildings (one with five bedrooms, one with four) are joined by a fabulous, restaurant-style terrace with full bar and alfresco dining for eighteen, while the shared lower terrace features an infinity swimming pool and panoramic vistas. The exquisite design blends high-end modern comforts with vintage rustic charm, artisanal detail, and original artwork by contemporary Croatian masters. The expansive outdoor living areas at Villa Ninon invite you to savor the open-air pleasures of the Dubrovnik Riviera. Plunge into the luminous pool and bask in the sun on lounge chairs facing the dreamy horizon. Rinse in the alfresco shower and gather for drinks and lunch under the vine-clad pergola. Behold the breathtaking sunset and linger outdoors as night falls, sipping Croatian wine and relishing home-made dinners in the sea-filtered breeze. The central terrace blends seamlessly into the villa's interiors, forming a lovely indoor/outdoor space for festive gatherings or intimate moments with family and friends. Louvered windows breathe the sea air, while a superbly equipped gourmet kitchen serves multiple lounges and dining tables. There is also a lovely ground-level tavern, ideal for savoring the famed wines and olive oils of this fertile region. The bedrooms bear the names of famous explorers, and each features an ensuite bathroom, desk, and sumptuous king size-bed (two of which can be converted into pairs of twin beds). Several of the rooms open to balconies with magnificent views. The décor combines beautiful natural materials (rich wood accents, exposed stone), touches of antique elegance, and fine contemporary photography. The villa's location provides a unique yet timeless taste of Dalmatia, with easy access to the charming fishing village of Brsečine and the enchanting Sjekirica Beach, whose crystalline waters invite swimming and snorkeling. Dubrovnik is an easy drive down the coast, and nearby Trsteno Arboretum (which served as a setting in Game of Thrones) includes a spectacular collection of ancient trees. Copyright © Luxury Retreats. All about Dubrovnik

Planning a dubrovnik riviera vacation we’re here to help.

The ancient walled, medieval city of Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s most popular cultural hotspots to visit. Most recently, vacationers have flocked to the city because of the UNESCO world heritage site’s starring role as King’s Landing in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and as a location for Hollywood blockbusters, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Robin Hood: Origins. But aside from its silver screen fame, this city’s rich history, dating back hundreds of years, ensures there is plenty to see and experience while on vacation here. From the Gothic, Medieval, and Baroque architecture of the palaces, churches, and monasteries housed within Dubrovnik’s old town Stari Grad, to the museums, open-air markets, and seaside restaurants; sightseeing is high on the agenda when visiting the Pearl of the Adriatic. That’s if you can tear yourself away from the many beaches and rocky coves.

Seeing the sights

There is so much to see on foot in Dubrovnik that walking through the medieval city’s cobbled streets is a pleasure that’s hard to beat. The city gets very busy during July and August and it pays to get up early to do see all Dubrovnik has to offer. A wonderful way to see the city from a new viewpoint is to walk along the top of the old town’s walls. An audio tour is available from the main entrance of the Pile Gate and the two-kilometer walk takes about two hours to complete. If you want to get even higher, take a cable car up to Mount Strad to see the entire vista of the city laid out before you.

Architecture buffs will enjoy the Sponza Palace, Rector’s Palace and the Dominican monastery for their gothic splendor.  The Maritime Museum is where all naval historians should head to discover the history of the Republic of Ragusa’s extensive naval power.

Shopping sprees

There are plenty of great shopping opportunities in Dubrovnik. Head to the Gunduliceva Poljana open-air market and stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, and dried figs that are perfect for alfresco picnics. The market also sells locally produced lavender oils and embroidered linens which make excellent gifts. If you’d like to take home some regional wines, olive oil, honey or rakija (locally produced fruit brandy), look out for Dubrovacka Kuca, a store close to St Dominic’s Tower in the Old Town. There are plenty of designer boutiques for a little sartorial thrill too – Maria Concept Store is one of the best, selling Saint Laurent and Givenchy to name a few.

Alfresco dining

There is a very established café culture in Dubrovnik. Stradun Street is the epicenter for cafes and gelaterias, making it the perfect place for a pit stop on a day’s sightseeing tour. For more elaborate meals, there are multiple options on every street corner. With local seafood a must-try, make a date to visit Prora at the Hotel Excelsior. It’s a waterfront restaurant serving classic local dishes such as squid ink risotto, fried calamari, and fresh oysters. Honeymooners may want to visit Nautika, near the Pile Gate – it’s been voted the 6th most romantic restaurant in the world by Conde Nast Traveler, as its small terraces look out over the bay and its traditional Croatian dishes are delicious. Sushi fans will love Bota, a small terraced restaurant near the Cathedral which serves fresh Oysters and sushi.

Dubrovnik sunsets are legendary, and what better way to watch the sun go down than with a cocktail in hand? Look out for Buza, a tiny bar built into the rocks and accessed through a hole in the old town wall. It’s a low-key venue with tables dotted all over the rocks by the sea, serving spritz cocktails, chilled pilsner lagers, and rakija fruit brandies.

If sampling a glass or two of Croatian wine is appealing, cut a dash to La Bodega, a chic bar with an extensive wine list, set over four floors in a 17th century stone building. For evenings with musical accompaniment, make a plan to go to the Troubadour Hard Jazz Cafe, which offers live music every night of the week during the summer season.

Sun worshipping

The beauty of Dubrovnik is that there are so many rocky coves and small pebble beaches to discover and claim as your own. Hiring a boat is the easiest way to explore the coastline independently (your Luxury Resorts concierge will be able to help you with this) but there are some popular beaches to lounge on during your stay, too. The most loved is Banje; it’s a pebbly and sandy beach with deck chairs that can be rented from the East-West Beach Club. The Coral Beach Club is also worth a visit. It’s a sandy beach with large sun loungers and an open-air bar with cocktails served straight to your chair. A twenty-minute walk from Banje beach, along a pine tree-fringed path, leads to Sveti Jakov, a sand and shingle beach with views of Lokum island and close to the Hotel Villa Dubrovnik for a quick lunch pit stop. Large family parties should check out Copacabana beach, set in the Valamar Hotel complex which is one of the city’s largest pebble beaches and is popular for its shallow waters.

On the road

There is plenty to see outside of the city limits and whether you want to jump in a car or hire a boat, these little excursions can be achieved within a day. Food lovers should head to the Peljesac Peninsula to sample fresh oysters and local wines. The Mali Ston bay within the peninsula is home to the rare European flat oyster and is worth making the trip to sample this delicacy alone.

Close to the city is the Saints Hill Winery, which is loved for its crisp rosé wine and fantastic restaurant. If you and your vacation crew want to take to the waters, there are regular 15-minute ferry rides from the Old Town Port to Lokrum island. Its botanical islands are the perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Where to stay – Dubrovnik villas

With hilltop views, easy access to beaches, and luxurious interiors, our elegant homes on the Dubrovnik Riviera are the ultimate home-away-from-home.

Up on the hill

Renting villas in Dubrovnik is a great way to ensure large vacation parties, whether family or friends, have their needs met completely. Many of the modern apartments and villas are set into the hillside with panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, while still being close enough to walk into Stari Grad within minutes. Landscaped gardens, open plan terraces, private swimming pools and outdoor kitchens are just some of the features you can look forward to. Secret pebble or sandy beaches can be reached by steps or pine tree-lined paths from the villas, meaning midnight dips are very much on the menu.

Into the blue

Eight kilometers north of Dubrovnik lies Zaton Bay a horseshoe-shaped bay lined with pine trees, little pebble coves, and secret swimming spots. From the 15th century onwards it was where the nobility of Dubrovnik vacationed, making ourZaton Bay vacation rentals a truly wonderful proposition. Step forward the Villa Pugliesi; a 15th-century summer residence renovated with all the modern amenities vacation parties of 14 could need. Think terraced Mediterranean gardens, private pool, fountain, central library and private chapel. The front terraces overlook the Zaton Bay and the Elaphiti islands, while Konavle village with its local eateries and vineyards are just a quick drive away.

Instead of Napa, California, Visit Sonoma, California

Even though these two wine country destinations are located close by, the prices can be worlds apart.

"They're comparable due to them literally being right next door to each other and offering many of the same amenities," said Jared Benoff, founder of Vacationeeze , a family-owned travel agency.

"You have to look a little closer to see some key differences between the two charming regions," he said. "For example, the Bardessono in Yountville, Napa will be approximately $1,500 per night while the Madrona, recently named one of the best in the world by Travel + Leisure, will be about $690 per night. 7 Places Where the Dollar Goes Farthest for Travelers

A strong dollar can stretch your travel imagination. we asked travel professionals where you should use that extra buying power..

  • Copy Link copied

Japan has been seen as an expensive tourist destination in the past, but a weak yen means American travelers are finding uncharacteristically great deals in places like Kyoto.

If Afar’s Where to Go in 2024 list is inspiring your trip planning this year, we have good news: The U.S. dollar is strong in a lot of popular destinations and your money is going to go further. For example, seeing the Colosseum in Rome and the Sydney Opera House is cheaper for Americans at the moment, because purchases made in local currency are weighted in our favor.

While seasonality and supply and demand affect a destination’s value (Paris is likely to be more expensive during the Olympics, whereas shoulder season can deliver some deals), a strong dollar means you’ll get more for less. So we talked to industry experts to find out where travelers can get the best value out of that formula.

Machu Picchu is popular for a reason; it’s one of the tourist attractions Afar editors actually love visiting .

“Now is a great time to consider visiting Peru ,” says Melissa Da Silva, president of Trafalgar Tours North America. “Not only can travelers expect to spend around $10 for a terrific meal, but its temperate climate and incredible marvels . . . make it a bucket-list destination travelers cannot afford to miss.” We’d add that while Machu Picchu is a don’t-miss historical site , there’s so much more to see in Peru than the ancient Inca ruins . Plus, Intrepid Travel is offering new itineraries on the less-traveled Inca Quarry Trail in the Sacred Valley.

Michael Holtz, founder and CEO of SmartFlyer, agrees: “South American countries like Argentina , Peru, and Colombia are known for their diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and outstanding hospitality at a more accessible price point, both for travel and once on the ground.”

“Anytime there is strength in the U.S. dollar, it makes for an ideal time to go to Europe,” says Ann Chamberlain, a travel advisor for Chase’s business and luxury travel arm Frosch. But she recommends that travelers look beyond that too. “Another favorite, more affordable destination I love to recommend to my clients is Thailand . With rates for luxury, five-star resorts starting [in the $200s], it’s easy to find nice places to stay without breaking the bank. It’s also a great destination for incredible food , and with some of the world’s best beaches , travelers can spend their days enjoying nature and forgoing activities that require a lot of money.” And remember: The third season of HBO’s The White Lotus is filming in Thailand, so right now could be the ideal time to check out those luxury resorts before they inevitably become even more popular when the show airs next year.

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Japan, the weak yen makes this year an ideal time to go: Your dollar stretches about 35 percent further than it did in 2019. Whether you want to explore Tokyo ‘s fish markets and record bars; marvel at the temples of Kyoto ; or hike through majestic forests on the Kumano Kodo trail, plenty of deals area available.

“For Americans with the time to travel a little further,” says Holtz, “ Australia is a welcome escape where they can get the most for their dollar.” As of May 2024, US$1 gets you AUS$1.50, so Americans’ cash will buy them more time to sample the coffee in Melbourne or order beers and check out the best hotels in Sydney , one of our picks for Where to Go in 2024. Rome's Trevi Fountain, without people

An all-time favorite, Rome is a good value now.

“The U.S. dollar is particularly strong at the moment, offering close to 1:1 exchange to the euro,” says Holtz. “This favorable exchange rate combined with the numerous new hotel openings, particularly in Italy and France , encourages more European travel on the horizon for 2024.” He notes that Portugal is also attractive because “travelers can enjoy all the creature comforts of a Mediterranean summer but for more extended periods of time.”

Steve Born, chief marketing officer for the Globus travel brands (Globus, Cosmos, and Avalon Waterways) sees great opportunity in Europe too, and notes that the euro goes further in eastern and southern Europe than in the western region. He recommends Croatia and Greece for better value at restaurants and hotels. “Overlooking the blue waters of the Adriatic, cities like Dubrovnik not only host extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage sites, charming, historic streets, and medieval attractions, [but] the pricing at Croatian accommodations is also much less than other parts of Europe,” he says.

Traveling has always been a luxury, to some extent — plane tickets, car rentals, frequent dining out and souvenir shopping can all add up to a hefty price tag — but there have always been ways to travel on a budget , whether it’s backpacking or just opting for a cheap hotel.

Even so, as wealth inequality continues to grow around the world and luxury experiences become more prevalent, some destinations are growing so expensive that they will soon be completely out of reach for the average tourist, if they aren’t already.

Key West, Florida

Home to gorgeous beaches, lively nightlife, six-toed cats and a famously laid-back vibe, it’s no surprise that Key West has been a top destination for decades. According to Wayne Kask, travel writer and the CEO of Discover West Central Florida , Key West’s popularity has finally started pushing prices out of reach of the average traveler.

“Key West has always felt like paradise to me. But after my last trip, I couldn’t ignore the obvious signs that Key West is no longer an affordable haven for us regular travelers,” said Kask. “The hotel prices had skyrocketed, and dining out put a huge dent in my budget.

“All the celebrity cachet and exclusive appeal might be great for wealthy visitors. But for those of us trying not to break the bank just to experience some tropical magic, it’s endlessly frustrating. Key West was always meant to be enjoyed by everyone. But soon, only the affluent few will be able to afford her paradise.”

Napa, California

While California has a number of wine regions, the Napa Valley is by far the most famous — and the most popular among tourists. Napa made its reputation in part by being a bit more accessible and less stuffy about wine than its European equivalents, but Tim Schmidt, travel expert and the founder of travel blog All World , said those laid-back days are gone.

“I fondly remember leisurely strolling the vineyards and tasting any vintage I wanted right from the barrel. That was my happy place! But now? Those carefree-tasting days seem like a distant memory,” he said. “Today, a visit to a winery can set you back over $50 per person in tasting fees alone, with some high-end establishments even requiring reservations for a mere sip. What was once a spontaneous, enjoyable experience has morphed into a formal, budget-draining affair.”

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The Dalmatia region of Croatia has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Mediterranean, although it’s not nearly as well known to American travelers. According to Giacomo Piva, travel industry analyst and co-founder of the international luggage storage company Radical Storage , that’s no longer the case.

“Thanks to the incredible success of the TV show ‘Game of Thrones’ that was filmed in this city, Dubrovnik has become a very popular tourist destination, which has consequently brought a boom in the prices, in order to preserve the natural beauty of the landscapes and the historical sites of the city,” Piva said.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Southern Italy’s Amalfi Coast, another Mediterranean tourist spot famed for its stunning views and picturesque cliffside villages, is an extremely popular destination for good reason. Emme Parrish of the travel services company The Table Less Traveled said that this popularity is reshaping the coast and making it less accessible.

“This area is no longer the ‘quiet, quaint, cute’ little charming villages of the past. Because of its popularity, hotels and Airbnbs book up early, and they are expensive,” she explained. “We’ve seen costs rise more than 4x for some hotels in the area — and that doesn’t necessarily mean their property or services have improved. In addition to the rising costs, many locals are opting to move out of the area to rent their places in town to tourists, and to live in less expensive areas. That means you’ll see fewer locals, and more tourists, and you won’t get as much of that ‘local’ essence.”

Venice, Italy

One of the most iconic tourist destinations in the world, mention Venice to just about anyone, and it will immediately conjure up images of narrow streets with buildings rising high on either side, undercut by the canals full of gondolas and singing. Venice has also become famously overcrowded with ever-rising prices — the city has even begun charging a daily entrance fee in an attempt to reduce crowding.

“Venice… is well known for its romantic canals, historical buildings and vibrant cultural heritage and has always been a dream destination for tourists from all corners of the world. Nevertheless, it has also led to overcrowding and a rise in prices, which keep on becoming more expensive by the day and thus inaccessible to budget travelers who would want to visit,” said Sushant Yadav of the travel agency Travelosei .
