Make the Most of Late Harvest Season in the New England States

Ah, November in New England... you want an honest opinion, right?  It's not the best month.

Leaves have faded and fallen in all but the southern and coastal parts of the region, leaving a stark landscape of skeletal trees. It's cold but usually not cold enough to ski New England's slopes until  maybe  the end of the month. It can be damp and horribly dreary. New Englanders head into November thankful to gain an hour when they turn the clocks back to Eastern Standard Time at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month... but they lament how early darkness falls for the remainder of the year.

But wait! November  does  have some redeeming qualities. After all, it's the month when Americans feast and give thanks. Thanksgiving traditions originated in New England with the Pilgrims in 1621, although some, like making mincemeat , traveled here from across the Atlantic. Throughout the region, the harvest is celebrated, and restaurant menus are loaded with comfort foods. Newport, Rhode Island—one of New England's best cities for dining—even hosts Restaurant Week  in November, and the deals make meals even more pleasurable.

As with any in-between season, November is also a time for lodging bargains in New England. Give yourselves the early holiday gift of a romantic getaway at one of these  10 New England B&Bs that have fireplaces in every room , and you won't mind November's chill at all.

New England Weather in November

Average November Temperatures (Low / High):

Hartford, CT: 35º / 52º Fahrenheit (2º / 11º Celsius) Providence, RI: 36º / 53º Fahrenheit (2º / 12º Celsius) Boston, MA: 38º / 52º Fahrenheit (3º / 11º Celsius) Hyannis, MA: 37º / 53º Fahrenheit (3º / 12º Celsius) Burlington, VT: 31º / 46º Fahrenheit (-1º / 8º Celsius) Concord, NH: 28º / 48º Fahrenheit (-2º / 9º Celsius) Portland, ME: 31º / 48º Fahrenheit (-1º / 9º Celsius)

New England is known for its tough-to-predict weather, but November holds fewer surprises than most months. Typically, as the days march on, they grow gradually more frigid and somber. The season's first dusting of snow is often in November, and it's actually a lovely sight. But it's also a harbinger of heftier storms to come. On average, Boston sees 4 inches of rain and 1 inch of snow in November. The farther north you travel in the region, the better your chances of seeing white stuff at some point in the month.

What to Pack

Warm layers are necessary in November, and a winter jacket is likely a must by the end of the month. The farther north you venture, the colder temperatures will be particularly after dark. Pack an umbrella, too, because freezing cold rain is actually the worst. Snow boots might be worth packing, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors.

Best Destinations for November in New England

New England's number one place to visit in November is Plymouth, Massachusetts, of course! There was no "New England" until the Pilgrims arrived aboard the  Mayflower  in 1620 and established the first permanent English settlement on the northern Atlantic coast. You may not know this, but... the Pilgrims did not  mean  to land here! They were bound for Virginia but blew off course. Plymouth is a place  you  should  intend  to visit, though, at least once in your lifetime. Attractions like Plimoth Plantation ,  Plymouth Rock  and  Mayflower II  (returning to Plymouth in 2020) tell the story of the founding of New England and of American traditions that have endured for centuries. If you make reservations in advance, you can even  dine with Pilgrim reenactors on Thanksgiving .

By mid-November, Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the best places in the region for a getaway. Summer's crowds have vanished, so it's easy to get a table at Newport's hottest restaurants. Newport has the densest concentration of B&Bs in all of New England, so you're sure to find a cozy room where you can hide from the elements if November days turn gray. The ocean helps to moderate temperatures, so you may actually find the weather surprisingly tolerable, and a brisk stroll along the  Cliff Walk  may be a highlight of your stay. Best of all, starting November 23, Newport's famed mansions show off their  over-the-top holiday decorations .

If holiday shopping is on your mind, another ideal November destination is the compact coastal city of  Portsmouth, New Hampshire . Here, the shops, galleries and boutiques are all unique, and your holiday budget goes farther because there's no sales tax in New Hampshire. Visit a state-run  New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlet , too, to stock up and save on liquid supplies for all of your holiday festivities.

Best November-December Getaways in New England

Halloween might be over, but that doesn’t mean that fall is! Just ignore that holiday decor that’s now available in your favorite stores. There’s still plenty left to savor when it comes to the fall season, right up until December. Football on TV, the last bit of the fall foliage, cozy bonfires and hot chocolate, prepping for the big Thanksgiving meal — it all still awaits, and there’s no better place to enjoy it all than New England.

                                                       Explore Fall Getaways

This region of the country is perfect for a fall - early winter weekend getaway. You get to take in the last bits of the season before the holiday hustle hits and no matter who you travel with you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Couples young and old can enjoy a little alone time before welcoming family far and wide for Thanksgiving and Christmas events. Groups of girlfriends or friends of all types can relax and rejuvenate and not think about the kids being off for two weeks during the winter, or all the Christmas shopping that’s coming up. Even multigenerational travel groups will enjoy a fun fall getaway in New England — maybe this is even the perfect time to start a little Thanksgiving tradition, a fall weekend away with the fam versus cramming everyone into one tiny dining room.

Whatever your reason for seeking the seasonal fun that a November-December weekend in New England can provide, here are a few destinations and activities to consider as you start planning.

1. Outdoor Fun at White Mountain Hotel and Resort, New Hampshire

In North Conway, New Hampshire, escape to the mountains while you enjoy a stay in luxury at The White Mountain Hotel & Resort . This property has something for everyone you’re traveling with, plus spaces that bring together the whole group. Your crew can split off to enjoy the outdoor fun, such as hiking or going for a swim in the outdoor heated pool, before coming back together at the fire pit or the jacuzzi.

The property’s Fall Escape and Ski packages   makes a getaway even easier. It includes two nights of accommodations, dinner at Ledges Restaurant, two breakfasts and use of all the resort’s facilities.

2. Seasonal Eats at Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa, Massachusetts

If there’s one great thing about fall in New England, it’s the food. This region of the country, all up and down the coast, boasts such great fall bites, from fresh baked goods to all things apple, hard cider galore to bountiful seafood harvests. Experience the best of Massachusetts’s fall harvest when you stay at Dan’l Webster Inn and Spa .

The elegant inn’s Fall Frolic Package is perfect for a couple of foodies looking for a quick getaway. The stay bundle includes one night of accommodations at a discounted rate, a great fit if you want to drive in on a Saturday afternoon and stay through a lazy Sunday morning; a meal allowance for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the on-site restaurant or tavern; a bottle of sparkling cider; a jar of locally-made, seasonal jam; and a box of chocolates.

3. A Thanksgiving to Remember at Meadowmere Resort, Maine

If you do want to start a new Thanksgiving tradition by getting the whole family away for the holiday, then look no further than Meadowmere Resort in Ogunquit, Maine. This wonderful resort is a large family’s dream. There’s something for every age group and every interest and it’s all at your fingertips.

So, this year, forget those crowded family functions and the ever-looming possibility of burning the turkey, much to your mother-in-law’s dismay. Spend Thanksgiving at Meadowmere instead.

The resort offers what it calls a Thanksgiving Holiday Survival Kit, but we assure you that you’ll do much more than just survive when you spend the day or weekend here — you’ll positively thrive.

In addition to enjoying Thanksgiving in your own private guestroom (goodbye to sharing a bedroom with your little brother!), you’ll indulge in a full breakfast every morning, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner (no dirty dishes included), shopping deals at the nearby outlets (hello, Black Friday!) and access to all the resort’s amenities, like the hot tubs, game room and indoor pool.

4. Shoulder Season in Newport, Rhode Island, Courtesy of Hotel Viking

Newport, Rhode Island, is such a picturesque little New England community. Everyone should visit at least once, but this ritzy vacation destination can get majorly crowded during the summer months. Things tend to cool off a bit in the fall, though, making Newport a great pick for a November-December weekend getaway in New England.

The luxurious and posh Hotel Viking offers its Fall in New England special to easily cater to your needs. In addition to discounted parking, you’ll get a $50 gas card, just what you’ll need for exploring the town, and a picnic for two. Definitely take the basket of scrumptious goodies out to Ocean Drive, for lovely views of the water and Newport’s historic mansions.

5. Rekindle the Romance at Interlaken Inn, Connecticut

Perhaps you and your sweetie really need to recharge the batteries before you head into the holidays as a united front against all the stress that can pop up this time of year. If so, maybe consider a getaway for just the two of you this fall. Interlaken Inn in Lakeville, Connecticut, has just the ticket. The inn’s Instant Romance package comes with one night of accommodations, great for getting away from the kids for just a minimal amount of time; chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne, delivered straight to your guestroom, for some classic romance; a three-course dinner for two; a picnic lunch with a picnic hamper that you get to take home as a souvenir; and then breakfast for two afterward. It’s everything you could need!

6. Hike Your Way Through the White Mountains, Starting at Snowvillage Inn, New Hampshire

Hiking in New England in the fall and early winter is arguably much better than hiking in New England during the summer. The foliage is vibrant, the bugs are at a minimum and there’s no sweat! If you’re a beginner hiker, then Snowvillage Inn in Eaton, New Hampshire has the thing for you. The White Mountain Guided Hike for Beginners package comes with two nights of accommodations, a shuttle to a guided hike, lunch and drinks to take with you out on the trail and a full breakfast so you can fuel up for your adventures.

If you don’t feel like hiking is really your thing, no worries. The inn also has packages for those who’d rather kayak, mountain bike or go waterfall hunting. All of the experiences are guided, so there’s no fear of being lost in the unfamiliar outdoors!

7. Get Creative, at Hartstone Inn and Hideaway, Maine

Maybe your outlet for stress is creativity. If that’s the case, a fall-beginning of winter weekend getaway to Camden, Maine, could be in the cards for you. There, the Hartstone Inn and Hideaway offers two ways to tap into your creative side.

With the Play With Clay Getaway Package, you can enjoy a pottery workshop at Belfast Clay Studio and leave with two items of your own creation. The On the Rocks Glass Blowing Package allows you to work one on one with a local artist, blowing your own custom rock glass. Both packages come with lodging for two nights, dinner for two and gourmet breakfasts.

The Best Things to Do in New England This Fall

By Paul Rubio and Todd Plummer

New England Fall Guide 16 Best Things to Do in New England this Autumn

When you live in the northeast , every season has its own charm—but nothing beats a New England fall. The forests and mountains erupt into a riot of colors, and locals embrace every bit of the fall-themed splendor. Join in on the fun by heading to regional farms and roadside stands for fresh cider doughnuts, apple picking, and pumpkin patch photo opps (not to mention the frenzy of baking they do at home), or opt for a long, rambling road trip through the region’s quieter locales. This fall in particular feels especially energetic, with new museum exhibits, new hotels and spas, and new events for both locals and visitors to explore. Whether you’re looking to get out into nature and appreciate the region’s natural beauty, visit a pumpkin show illuminated by over 1,500 jack-o-lanterns, or you simply want to hunker down for a glamorous spa weekend, these are our picks for the best things to do in New England this fall .

AWOL Massachusetts

1. Enjoy Provincetown all to yourself

While everyone’s out leaf peeping across the New England mainland, consider escaping to Provincetown . You’ll have the tip of Cape Cod —and its wealth of historic lighthouses, sand dunes, humpback whales, and seaside charm—all to yourself. Yes, the summer crowds thin out at this time of year, but there is still lots to explore in town, thanks to a bustling lineup of festivals which, since the pandemic, basically extends until the holiday season: from Women’s Week, to TransWeek, Spooky Bear, Provincetown Food & Wine Festival, and Holly Folly. . Base yourself in the center of the action at the lovely Gifford House Inn , which just underwent a renovation this year,or opt for something a little removed from the action such as AWOL Provincetown, which overlooks the serene moors at the far West End of downtown. Amble through the boutique-lined “downtown,” bike or walk one of the surrounding nature trails, explore the uninhabited sand dunes of the northern Cape with Art’s Dune Tours (bookings until November 15, 2023), or set sail on a highly rewarding whale watch with eco-conscious company Dolphin Fleet (sailings run through October 29, 2023t).

2. Drive the Vermont Cheese Trail

Many destinations love to organize themselves with wine trails, street art walks, public art districts, and so forth–but did you know that Vermont has its very own Cheese Trail? The Vermont Cheese Council has done all of us the very important public service of putting together a circuit of the state’s top cheesemakers, which makes for an excellent diversion no matter where you find yourself in the state. Some stops are small, family-owned dairy farms on sleepy country roads; others are larger institutions with museums and formal tours. Check out the Vermont Cheese Council’s website for an interactive map with all the stops.

Ocean House Massachusetts

3. Sharpen your kitchen skills at a hotel

There’s no shortage of charming inns and hotels in New England, many of which have really upped their culinary game in recent years—and several of which now invite guests to do the same. The intimate 22-room Relais & Chateaux property The Inn at Hastings Park , located in historic Lexington 30 minutes outside of Boston, offers immersive culinary instructional workshops and supper clubs taught by inn owner and chef Trisha Pérez Kennealy. Down along the coast in sleepy Watch Hill, Rhode Island, summer hotspot Ocean House makes a compelling case for visiting during the off-season with its Center for Wine and Culinary Arts, which offers an educational lineup of classes and wine tasting dinners each fall. A full listing of available classes (some of which are open to the public, not just hotel guests, as single sessions for a fee) is available here .

4. Visit a Trustees of Reservations Property

New Englanders wear their history proudly, and few organizations in the region–or perhaps the country–can compete with Massachusetts’ Trustees of Reservations in terms of historic preservation and land conservation. This non-profit, first established by the Massachusetts Legislature over 130 years ago, owns and cares for over 100 sites of historic or natural significance around the state, from historic estates to sculpture museums to working farms. If you’re coming from Boston, the World’s End Reservation in Hingham or the Harold Parker State Forest in Andover are just about half an hour’s drive from the city proper. If you have time to venture further afield, the Naumkeag Pumpkin Show uses over 1500 jack-o-lanterns to bring a historic Berkshires estate to life. .

5. Soak up some culture and history

If it’s looking like more of an indoor kind of day, turn your attention to the multitude of museums and historic sites New England has to offer, many of which are located in Boston—or as a convenient day trip away. There are the institutional biggies like the classic Museum of Fine Arts Boston (which this fall welcomes “Fashioned by Sargent,” an exhibition about the role of fashion in Sargent’s portraiture), the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (catch the new exhibit Forecast Form, about art of the Caribbean Diaspora), the intimate Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and the great-for-kids Museum of Science . Or turn your eye outside of the city limits where more options abound. Drive out to the Berkshires and visit The Clark for impressionism and old masters, or Mass MoCA , a sprawling contemporary art museum set in a former mill complex. The nine-installation James Turrell: Into the Light exhibit (note that advanced reservations are required), is now accompanied by C.A.V.U .—Turrell's largest free-standing circular Skyspace that was three decades in the making, and opened earlier last year.

Lodge at Spruce Peak

6. See the leaves via zip line

There's driving through autumnal foliage from the comfort of your car. But then there's getting a thrilling bird’s-eye view via a zip line. Many of New England’s ski areas offer zip line activities during the summer and fall months, such as Gunstock Mountain Resort in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region (go there for epic water views over Lake Winnipesaukee), or at Catamout Mountain Resort in the Berkshires (the longest zip line in New England, at over 5,500 feet long).

Contessa

7. Get to know Boston’s rising farm-to-table scene

With new regional developments in year-round farming and hydroponics, there's been a rise in popularity for seasonal, locally-sourced farm-to-table cuisine—and fall is the best time to try it all. In Boston, head over to the Seaport District for dinner at Woods Hill Pier 4 , or to Puritan & Company in Cambridge, where Robert Downey, Jr. and Scarlett Johanssen were recently spotted dining. Rooftop apertivo bar Contessa (pictured) has also maintained its appeal (think inventive Northern Italian menu and Public Garden-view) since Carbone-famous Major Food Group opened it in 2021 atop the Newbury Hotel —a perfect urban leaf-peeping spot. Outside of the city, consider a stop by Gilson’s farm in Groton, about forty minutes west of Boston where the suburbs quickly give way to bucolic, rolling hillsides. Chef Will Gilson’s popular “Herb Lyceum” dinner series returns this year on select Fridays and Saturdays throughout the season. These dinners feature five courses of Gilson’s seasonal produce, starting with passed appetizers in the gardens and then moving inside to an open air carriage house for a communal dining experience capped at just 30 guests.Keep an eye on Herb Lyceum’s website for updated dates and ticket info. And if your travels bring you to Cape Cod, the Chatham Bars Inn’s popular Fall Greenhouse Dinner Series returns this year with four unique culinary experiences held at the hotel’s Farm in Brewster.

Boston Harbor City Cruises

8. Go whale watching

Between Cape Ann and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is one of the top spots for whale watching in the country, where you’ll typically end up on organized trips from the Cape, the North Shore, or even Boston . Most don’t realize that the best time to whale watch is October through early November, when the boat crowds have thinned and the humpbacks are out in full-force—it’s a great time of year to get breaching photos. Boston Harbor Cruises offers its whale watching trips through mid-November this year.

The Witch Memorial in Salem Massachusetts

9. Explore modern-day Salem

The history of Salem, Massachusetts, may be steeped in witchcraft, but its modern-day magic is hard to miss. Base yourself at The Merchant , a 200-year-old home that once belonged to sea merchant Joshua Ward and is now a colorful and creative boutique hotel in close proximity to the Salem Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum. Then browse the American decorative art collections at the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the U.S., the Peabody Essex Museum (catch the new exhibit The Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice, which wraps November 26th). Book a spooky, lantern-lit walking tour to learn more about Salem’s nefarious past, then dine at one of the city’s buzzy restaurants like Ledger , which serves dishes like spaghetti alle vongole made with Duxbury clams in the spectacular setting of a former bank.

Colorful cranberry bog in the Shouth Shore region of Massachusetts. The cranberry is Massachusetts' number one...

10. Experience cranberry season

Live the Ocean Spray dream and sign up for a tour at A.D. Makepeace Company in Wareham —the world’s largest cranberry grower. In non-pandemic times, guests are invited to throw on a pair of overalls and wade through the bogs, but this year, they've linked up with the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association for an industry-wide bus tour.

Castle Hill Inn

11. Discover a different side of Rhode Island

Since it’s more about the coast than the forest in America’s smallest state, Rhode Island may not be an obvious choice for fall—but it's prime time to experience the "locals' summer." Split your days between walks on vast, near-empty beaches, and drives along colorful, canopied country roads. Head down oceanfront Scenic Route 1A from Westerly to Wickford—it’s about 40 miles, a long distance in Rhode Island terms—for the ultimate juxtaposition of seaside backdrops and changing leaves, and base yourself in tony Newport, which has a markedly low-key vibe this time of year. For overnights, book a room at the adorable new Gardiner House , nestled on a quiet waterfront street, or at the Brenton Hotel, which overlooks the iconic Bowen’s Wharf Marina and sits across the street from buzzy new Mother Pizzeria.

Mount Katahdin near Baxter State Park in Maine

12. Go hiking

Take advantage of the crisp fall weather to work up a sweat in New England’s wilder regions. For something truly rugged, head up north to Maine, where Baxter State park, the Nahmakanta Public Reserved Land and the Appalachian Mountain Club 100-Mile Wilderness Conservation Area offer a truly unspoiled outdoors experience. There are enough hiking trails—lined with brightly colored trees and towering evergreens, punctuated by boulder-strewn streams, lakes, and ponds—to keep all skill levels busy and happy.

Closer to Boston, the World’s End Reservation in Hingham or the Harold Parker State Forest in Andover are just about half an hour’s drive from the city proper. If the weather is clear and you’re still up for a mountainous challenge, the Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail on Mount Washington in New Hampshire offers some of the best alpine hiking on the east coast.

Image may contain Building Architecture Tower Lighthouse and Beacon

13. Explore Maine’s many lighthouses

If some Coastal Grandma vibes are up your alley this fall, consider a choose-your-own-adventure road trip up and down the Maine coast (or down and up, or whichever way you please). The state offers an astonishing 65 historic lighthouses, many of which are open to the public, and some of which even allow access to the keeper’s quarters, for an up-close view of how these iconic structures work. Many of them are still, today, actively used for offshore navigation. Check out the Maine Office of Tourism’s website for an interactive map of where you can find each lighthouse.

The Glen House hotel

14. Go apple (and pumpkin) picking

Nothing says fall in New England like pumpkin patches and apple orchards (and the cider doughnuts produced therein). At family-run Shelburne Orchards in northern Vermont, pick your own apples, feast on crispy cider doughnuts, sip fresh-pressed cider, and sample seven-year-old cask-aged Apple Brandy made on the premises. (Don't miss the Pommeau, a fortified cider, either.) In Loudon, New Hampshire, savor piping-hot cider doughnuts at Meadow Ledge Farm (so good they often command a 45-minute line), and in Meredith, New Hampshire, get lost in a mega-corn maze, pick your own pumpkins, and try cider doughnuts with a twist (think chocolate drizzle and sprinkles) at Moulton Farm . And while pick-your-own apples are common across much of New England, there seems to be a slightly higher concentration of these farms down in Connecticut–like at the tenth-generation family owned Averill Farm in Washington Depot, operating since 1746.

Image may contain Room Indoors Bedroom Living Room Furniture Bed Interior Design Flooring and Wood

15. Treat yourself to a five-star spa day

Autumn tends to bring plenty of mild weather, but it also requires plans for the occasional rainy day. Book some time at the glamorous new Guerlain Spa inside Raffles Boston for some time at the city’s buzziest new urban spa sanctuary (it’s scheduled to open in late October). . On Massachusetts’ South Shore, locals love the Mirbeau Inn & Spa for its luxurious spa treatments, as well as year-round Acqua Terrace, an outdoor space with a waterfall, fireplace, relaxing oversized whirlpool tubs, and drinks service.

And don’t make the mistake of assuming the Encore Boston Harbor only offers its rowdy nightlife and casino scenes–this enormous property, located in Everett just beyond Boston proper, is also home to one of New England’s largest, most glorious spas. Facials, in particular, are a strong suit here, with offerings from HydraFacial, Biologique Recherche and Dr. Babor. You’ll leave positively glowing—and perhaps with a little more luck on your side, too.

16. Plan a leaf-peeping road trip

Yes, it's the worst phrase ever, but there's nothing cringe-inducing about New England's highways in October—there's even a handy fall foliage map to help you plan the ideal weekend away. Make sure your road trip includes one of the following: New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway, a 34.5-mile National Scenic Byway through the state’s White Mountain National Forest, an itinerary through Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest, or the famed 63-mile Mohawk Trail through Massachusetts’s Berkshire Mountains. Each showcases the region’s most dramatic colors.

Fall in new england: when & where to go in 2023.

Time your New England fall getaway with prime leaf peeping.

Fall in New England

Explore vivid fall colors at a variety of New England destinations, such as along Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire.

New England is a popular destination for fall getaways, with its crisp, cool weather; the pick-your-own produce and fresh-pressed cider at family-owned farms; some of the country's best harvest festivals ; and – the main attraction – stunning foliage.

Perhaps the only challenge of visiting New England (or any destination known for its fall foliage ) this time of year is figuring out exactly when to go for prime leaf peeping. Visit too soon and the fall colors may not have peaked; visit too late and the trees may be bare. So when (and where) should you go?

The Best Time to Visit New England in the Fall

Camden and Penobscot Bay viewed from Mount Battie, Maine, in the fall.

For peak (or close to peak) fall foliage in 2023, plan to visit New England the first week of October.

"With El Niño possibly impacting our autumn, I think we may see a little bit of a 'slow-burn,' which means the fall colors are slow to develop," explains Jeff "Foliage" Folger, a New England resident, photographer and former fall foliage blogger for Yankee Magazine. "I suspect if we get enough rain during the summer, there may not be a big impact, but I would slide a few days later into October from the usual dates (in late September) for the best colors."

He also notes that prime leaf-peeping times vary by location. "The best time to be in New England is in October but remember it does not change all at once. It starts up north near Canada and over the next 30-plus days (into November) it will flow to the South and West until all the fall colors have drained out of New England into New York and points west."

On his website, jeff-foliage.com , where he shares fall predictions, photo tips and New England travel ideas, he notes that it wasn't until about the second week of October (specifically Oct. 6 to 10) that the fall colors made their appearance last fall – and this was under "normal" conditions, with New England seeing average rainfall throughout the summer. But summer 2023 is predicted to be especially dry and hot across the U.S.

6 Scenic Places to See New England Fall Foliage

Montgomery, vermont.

Waterville, Vermont, Montgomery Covered Bridge with fall foliage.

Folger prefers going off the beaten path in Vermont. "A drive on Route 58 in Hazen's Notch near Montgomery means you will almost be alone (usually)," he says. You'll also spot as many as seven covered bridges – the perfect backdrop for fall foliage photos – as Montgomery is considered the "Covered Bridge Capital" of Vermont.

Stowe, Vermont

The community church of Stowe, Vermont, among the autumn landscape.

Before the first snowfall descends upon this famous ski town , Stowe touts another reason to visit: the stunning fall foliage. Nicknamed "Fall's Color Capital," Stowe offers a plethora of outdoor activities, from biking and zip lining amid the changing leaves to strolling through downtown Stowe, a quintessential Vermont experience .

There's no shortage of scenic drives, either. Folger recommends heading north on state Route 108 (also known as the Smugglers' Notch Pass Scenic Highway) toward Smugglers' Notch. For the ultimate experience, book a stay at the dog-friendly Topnotch Resort , located in the foothills of Mount Mansfield, the highest mountain in Vermont.

Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

Aerial of Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire, surrounded by trees in the fall.

One of the most scenic drives in New England, the Kancamagus Highway bursts with color in the fall. The roughly 35-mile remote route takes travelers through White Mountain National Forest, with views of the White Mountains in the distance and the smell of fresh pine up close.

"The Kanc" is also convenient for another epic experience in New Hampshire : the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Opened in 1869, it is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway.

Visit NH recommends starting your journey in Lincoln. Drive along the Kancamagus Highway (state Route 112) to Conway, then take state Route 16 north through North Conway. From there, you'll carry on along U.S. Route 302 through Crawford Notch to the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Then, from the Cog, you can take U.S. Route 3 to Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch State Park back to Lincoln. Or, you might consider spending the night at the famous Omni Mount Washington Resort – the perfect spot for a romantic New Hampshire getaway .

Camden, Maine

While Acadia National Park and the neighboring town of Bar Harbor are undeniably stunning (and particularly popular) in the fall, don't overlook the charming town of Camden, about 80 miles southwest.

One of the best places to visit in Maine , this coastal village offers more than 30 miles of hiking trails – including plenty of easy-to-moderate paths – at Camden Hills State Park. If you're up for a challenge, take the famous Mount Battie Trail, which rewards hikers with stunning views of Penobscot Bay. Afterward, head into town for a bite to eat by the water and some shopping.

Lenox, Massachusetts

Autumn in the small village of Lenox, Massachusetts.

A stunning rural region in the mountains of western Massachusetts, the Berkshires are known for breathtaking scenery, especially in the fall. Leaf peeping experiences include hiking, scenic drives, hot air balloon rides and the Hoosac Valley Train Rides in Adams.

Ashley Rossi, managing editor at Roadpass Digital and a New England native, particularly likes the town of Lenox. "Lenox is home to historic museums, world-class spas, farms, and of course, incredible mountainous landscapes come fall," she says. After you see the foliage up close on foot at October Mountain State Forest, Rossi recommends heading to Edith Wharton's estate (The Mount) or the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum for a history lesson. You can also tour the grounds of Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. For unique, luxury accommodations, check into the Wheatleigh or Life House, Berkshires.

Vacations by Rail

Railroad tracks through a forest in the fall.

For the ultimate New England fall experience, you can book a trip with Vacations by Rail, which offers two fall foliage-inspired itineraries:

Autumn Tour in New England: This eight-day experience includes three different rail journeys, including the Cape Cod Dinner Train. It makes stops in Boston ; Newport, Rhode Island ; Mystic, Connecticut; North Conway, New Hampshire; and more.

Fall Colors, Scenic Trains & Martha's Vineyard: A 10-day journey, this tour also covers three different rail journeys plus lake and river cruises and a variety of towns and attractions. Stops include Martha's Vineyard and Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.

When is the best time to visit New England?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit New England depends on what you want to do while you’re there. There are four distinct seasons, each one bringing its own touch to the region.

We particularly recommend visiting during spring. The thawing spring temperatures bring wildflowers, and baseball when Boston’s Fenway Park opens. Many beaches also open for the season.

The summer months are ideal for a family trip. From June to August, you can expect temperatures exceeding 30°C, ideal for sailing and island-hopping in Cape Cod.

Inland, in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, the New England autumn blankets the landscape in rich, warm tones as the leaves change. Harvest time happens in September and October, when farms produce apple cider. These months also offer the best whale watching off the Massachusetts coast.

Winter in Vermont

Visiting New England in January - March

The harsh winter months see many coastal resorts shut down entirely, but the mountainous areas of New England attract visitors with a host of winter sports. Vermont is the best-known state for skiing and is home to a wide variety of resorts, from the powdery snow of Jay Peak to the family-friendly Okemo Mountain. New Hampshire also draws in many East Coast skiers.

Events & Festivals

  • Saint Patrick’s Day on 17th March is a public holiday that can take over Boston — some 20% of its residents claim Irish heritage. A parade is the focal point of the celebrations.

Springtime in Connecticut

Visiting New England in April - May

Spring breathes new life into New England, with wildflowers blossoming in the mountains and warming temperatures brightening up the coastline. New Hampshire and Vermont are the main beneficiaries of springtime: alongside the flowering landscape, the maple trees enter their sugaring season. In Boston , baseball fever sparks into life in April as the city’s beloved Red Sox begin their gruelling 162-game season.

  • The Boston Marathon, which has been running since the late 1800s, takes place on Patriots' Day (the third Monday in April). Now attracting half a million visitors, the event’s recent history has tightened the city’s bond with the race and made it a poignant reminder of Boston’s resilience.

Lobster Buoys, Maine

Visiting New England in June - August

The summer months are one of the two peak seasons in New England, when the entire region is in its element as temperatures soar. Visitors can enjoy fully the area’s scenery, from glacial lakes and mountains to the coast and its pristine beaches. Summer is a great time for families to visit, with a plethora of activities to choose from, although this is one of the busiest times of year. For more seclusion, Bar Harbor in Maine is the launch point for the Acadia National Park, where the majority of the state’s 75,000 moose live along with 40 other wildlife species.

  • Tanglewood — every summer, the Boston Symphony Orchestra relocates to the countryside of the Berkshires and holds a series of concerts on the Tanglewood Estate. One of the best-known classical music festivals in the USA, it typically begins in mid-June.

Vermont in Autumn

Visiting New England in September - October

New England’s second peak season is autumn, when the shift to cooler temperatures sets off the glorious fall displays. From mid-September to October, the blanket of reds and golds descends from Canada and falls across New England like a curtain, drawing a huge number of ‘leaf peeper’ tourists. The window for seeing the foliage is quite narrow, and New England’s small inns book up many months in advance. The cooler temperatures lend themselves to walking and hiking, and you can also head to Provincetown for whale watching as the cooling Atlantic Ocean pushes whales closer to the shoreline.

Old State House at night, Boston

Visiting New England in November - December

The end of October signals the end of the travel season in New England, and many hotels and inns close up until the end of the year. Thanksgiving typically signals the start of ski season in Vermont and New Hampshire, though the snowfall can be patchy.

  • Thanksgiving Day, taking place on the fourth Thursday in November, is the busiest travel day in the USA as the majority of the country heads home for this public holiday.

Fall foliage at Old North Bridge, Concord, Massachusetts

Touring Seasons

You can enjoy a trip to New England any time of year if you prepare for the weather and are wary of the busy times such as Memorial Day (late May), July 4th , Labor Day (early September), Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day (mid-October), and Thanksgiving (late November) when hotels , inns, restaurants , and transportation are filled to capacity.

There are also special local holidays such as Patriots Day (April 19th) in Massachusetts and Maine, Hallowe'en (October 31st) in Salem MA, and Christmas (December 25th) in Newport RI.

Early summer and early autumn are less crowded than high summer for a trip to New England . Autumn foliage season and Indian summer are New England's glory times, but winter has its own pleasures: skiing & snowboarding , concerts, First Night & more.

Summer High Season

Without doubt, the most popular times to travel in New England are the summer travel season from Memorial Day to Labor Day (late May, June, July and August) and the autumn foliage season (mid-September through October) centered on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , unless you're coming for New England skiing .

Frenchman Bay from Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor, Maine

Coming late and staying only briefly, spring in New England is often a disappointment . The week or two of spring days in April or May are a delight, with cool temperatures in the evening and just the perfect degree of warmth during the day, in bright, clear sun—just the thing for making maple syrup . But the delight of spring may be so brief that New Englanders joke "Oh, spring...yeah, last year it was on a Tuesday."

Late spring (April, early May), after ski season but before beach time , is traditionally called mud time , when the land thaws and runs to mud. It's the slowest season for tourist facilities, coming after ski season and before summer warmth and school vacations bring out the city folk. Some New England country inns take the opportunity to close , often for a week in April, to take a rest or make repairs. It's not the best time for outdoor activities, but cultural New England thrives.

Foliage Season

Vibrant reds, briliant yellows and muted tans and browns cover the branches. Countryside panoramas become blazing sweeps of color. Individual trees are like huge sun-lanterns . A single leaf can be a marvel.

The leaves die and fall to earth in a blizzard of fall foliage color that is one of earth's finest natural phenomena. The ground is covered in color, and you walk through it, scuffing the leaves about you, as though in a field of gold.

Harvest Weather

Throughout fall foliage season , days are still warm and pleasant , nights a bit chilly but not uncomfortably so. City people load their bikes into the car and head for the country, picking up fresh apple cider , pumpkins , and squash from farm stands on the way home.

Fresh cranberries are on sale in the markets all autumn, and although the blueberry -picking season is past, many apple orchards open so you can " pick-your-own " apples and get the freshest fruit possible at a low price. Many pick-your-own orchards feature fresh-squeezed apple cider for sale, along with apple pies , apple doughnuts and other fruit treats.

Color North to South

The cold touches the northern New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine first, and the color change starts there in September and moves southward and eastward through the region, with the peak of color in the northern states usually in late September and early October .

The peak comes a bit later in the southern states of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts , often climaxing in mid-October— Columbus Day weekend is often thought to be the "peak," but there is little truth in this as peak color depends on the weather in a specific year, and your location in New England. There's usually plentiful color all the way through the end of October and the celebration of Hallowe'en .

In many years, fall foliage color extends well into November with some of the deepest, most glowing reds on maple, gum and oak trees coming then. You may not see whole forests in bright colors, and by mid- to late November some trees will be bare of leaves, but others will be at their blazing best. If severe wind and rain doesn't bring the leaves down, you may enjoy pockets of brilliant color in protected valleys right through Thanksgiving .

Indian Summer

After a period of chilly weather in October, and perhaps even a touch of frost , New England usually gets a respite, with a short period of warm weather known as Indian summer that can occur in late October or November.

Late summer returns and beckons New Englanders out of their houses to enjoy the chill heavy dew of dawn, the last blaze of color in the trees, the scent of leaf-mold and woodsmoke in the air, the gentle rustle of falling leaves, the crackle of dry leaves underfoot, and the quiet retirement of the natural year.

The sweetest of all New England Indian summers are those that come late in November around Thanksgiving . In rare years, the third week of November can have shirt-sleeve weather , with warm, abundant sun and the grateful feeling that we had received a priceless gift from nature.

Skiing and snowboarding usually begins at northern New England's loftiest ski resorts in early December, but the shopping and partying frenzy leading up to Christmas and New Year's often distracts all but the most resolute skiers.

After the holidays, outdoor winter sports boom until mid- to late-March, with the February Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday weekend being the height of the season—you'll need reservations for everything at your chosen ski resort on " MLK ."

New England Weather & Climate

Temperatures are always cooler in northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ), than in the south ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island ).

The greatest contrast in temperatures is between the higher elevations in the north (such as Mount Washington ), and the southern coasts (such as the Connecticut Shoreline ).

Spring brings maple syrup , summer means beaches , boating, hiking , biking , camping , canoeing and kayaking , fishing, and windjammer cruises along the Maine coast .

Autumn is New England's glory with its blazing fall foliage . Winter means skiing and snowboarding , concerts, theater, art and celebrations.

Federal & State Holidays

Federal holidays are observed in all 50 US states. I've included New England state holidays here as well.

January 1 - New Year's Day

January, 3rd Monday - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

February, 3rd Monday - Presidents' Day, commemorating the birthday of George Washington (February 22).

April 19, nearest Monday - Patriots Day, in Massachusetts and Maine, commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 that began the American War of Independence.

May 4 - Rhode Island Independence Day, a state holiday in Rhode Island.

May 17 - Evacuation Day, a public holiday in Suffolk County, Massachusetts (including Boston), celebrating the withdrawal (evacuation) of British troops from Boston in 1776. Rumor has it that the holiday is really in honor of Saint Patrick's Day because of Boston's considerable Irish immigrant heritage.

May, last Monday - Memorial Day, commemorating all who have served in the military for the USA.

June 17 - Bunker Hill Day, a public holiday in Suffolk County, Massachusetts (including Boston), celebrating the victory of American forces at the battle of Bunker (or Breed's) Hill, June 17, 1775.

July 4 - Independence Day, also called the Fourth of July, celebrating the publication of the Declaration of Independence (from Great Britain) on July 4, 1776.

August 8 - Victory Day, a state holiday in Rhode Island, first celebrated as "VJ Day," for the Allied victory over Japan in World War II.

August 16 - Bennington Battle Day, a state holiday in Vermont, commemorating the Battle of Bennington (August 16, 1777), an important victory for American forces in the War of Independence.

September, 1st Monday - Labor Day, celebrating working men and women and their organizations (unions).

October, 2nd Monday - Columbus Day, commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas (October 12, 1492). Not celebrated in Vermont.

November 11 - Veterans Day is a federal holiday honoring those who have served in the US armed forces. If the 11th is a mid-week day, commemoration ceremonies may be held on the Friday or Monday nearest the day. If the 11th is a Saturday, US government offices close on Friday. If it's a Sunday, they close on Monday.

November, 4th Thursday - Thanksgiving Day, celebrating the harvest, especially that of the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony in 1621 after a terrible winter when many died.

December 25 - Christmas Day, celebrating the birth of Jesus, and for some people a mid-winter solstice celebration.

Cold and probably snowy, with some days of brilliant sunshine. The January sales bring out the shoppers, and the long Martin Luther King Day weekend brings out the skiers .

Vermont blizzard road

Except for the national holidays of New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day , January is quiet—but not the ski resorts .

New Year's Eve & Day

New Year's Eve in New England is First Night , with elaborate celebrations in some cities and towns.

First Night Parade, Boston MA

New Year's Day (January 1) is a holiday, and transportation services can be busy on December 31st and January 2nd.

After New Year's, the first two weeks of January are not a busy time in New England, travel services are unburdened, and prices are lower.

January Weather

In January the weather is cold in New England, probably with snow , sleet or freezing rain, but also days of brilliant sunshine . High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C), but may be below 0°F (-18°C) during multi-day "cold snaps."

In the mountains temperatures may drop to -10°F (-23°C). Nobody in their right mind climbs to the summit of Mount Washington except the people who have to work there.

Mid-Winter Thaw

Everyone hopes for a mid-winter thaw , a period of several days when unseasonably warm weather moves in and temperatures rise to 50° or even 60°F (10° to 15.5°C), but it does not always happen.

January Shopping

The post-Christmas discount sales start right after Christmas in December, and carry into January as stores seek to extend the holiday shopping season (if at lower prices ), and also to clear out inventory to prepare for the spring product lines.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day (" MLK "), a national holiday commemorating the life, work and tragic death of civil rights crusader Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., is the third Monday in January , making for a long weekend that many people look upon as the beginning of the ski season (even though the slopes usually open in December). The slopes are always busy on "MLK."

Ski lodges and country inns offer money-saving package deals , especially if you stay on weekdays rather than weekends.

Stowe Winter Carnival , Stowe VT, with ski races, parties and other festivities, many of them outdoors, is held in January.

The weather continues cold (like January) in New England, probably with snow and ice. The numerous cold, brilliant sunny days are great for outdoor activities if you dress warmly.

Winter at Walden Pond, Concord, Massachusetts

With luck, New England enjoys a brief mid-winter thaw in January or early February.

Ski season continues, though many New Englanders fly to the Caribbean or Mexico for a few weeks of warmth and to get away from the need to bundle up in lots of clothing whenever they go outside.

Presidents Day

The third Monday in February is Presidents Day , a national holiday honoring the birthdays of George Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Some museums remain open, but most offices are closed.

School Vacation Week

Many schools take a one-week winter vacation (often in the week of Presidents Day), and airports may be crowded on the weekends before and after the vacation week as families escape to warmer climates.

The holiday weekend is particularly busy in ski country .

Last big snows, lots of skiing, St Patrick's Day , then " mud time " and tapping maple trees of sap to make maple syrup .

Old-fashioned maple sap pails, Brattleboro, Vermont

Traditional wisdom holds that after St. Patrick's Day (March 17) there will be no more big snowstorms in the southern New England states ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island )—but traditional wisdom is occasionally wrong.

In any case, the weather is still cold, and ski resorts in the northern New England states ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ) have plenty of snow until April .

Saint Patrick's Day

Celebrated on March 17th as an Irish heritage day for all Americans, St Patrick's Day is not a holiday—except in Massachusetts' Suffolk County , which includes the City of Boston .

In Suffolk County, March 17th is officially commemorated as Evacuation Day , the date in 1776 on which British forces in Boston, under siege by the Continental Army, decided to withdraw ("evacuate") to Nova Scotia. This signal victory of the Revolutionary War was celebrated in 1902 with the completion of the Dorchester Heights Monument on the hill where the Continentals positioned the cannons that convinced the British to withdraw.

Irish influence having been powerful in Boston during the first half of the 20th century, the proclamation of March 17th as a local patriotic holiday allowed the celebration of St Patrick as well.

Some local government offices are closed on Evacuation Day, but most businesses, museums, etc. are open. A St Patrick's Day parade is held in South Boston , historic home of Boston's Irish-American community.

Mud Time & Maple Sugar

Late March and early April are " mud time " in much of New England, when warming days and chill nights produce partial thaw in the fields and on the hiking trails.

Farmers take advantage of the warming weather and rising sap for " sugaring off ," tapping their maple trees for sap and boiling it down to make maple syrup .

Patriots Day , Easter and universities' spring break are important as the weather warms and blossoms appear.

Redcoats at Lexington Green, Massachusetts

Ski season is winding down and spring has not really arrived, so many country inns close for all or part of April.

Diehard skiers head for the late-season thrills of Tuckerman Ravine i n New Hampshire 's White Mountains .

School Vacation & Spring Break

Easter falls in April in years in 2025, (Aptil 20th), 2026 (April 5th) and 2028 (April 16th), and New England's hundreds of colleges and universities empty out for Easter vacation (or spring break ), complicating travel on the weekends before and after the vacation.

Good Friday , preceding Easter, is not an official holiday though some businesses close and many people travel. Most public schools also have a week's vacation following Easter, which may crowd airports.

Patriots Day

Lexington Minutemen, Lexington, Massachusetts

Patriots Day (April 19) is a state holiday in Massachusetts , and Maine, celebrated on the third Monday in April. The day commemorates the first battles of the Revolutionary War , fought on April 19, 1775 in Lexington and Concord .

All Massachusetts state government offices and many local businesses close, though federal government offices and offices of large interstate and international companies remain open. Most museums are open, with the exception of some state-funded museums.

The headline events are the battle re-enactments in Lexington and Concord, and the Boston Marathon from Hopkinton MA to Boston . These are the events for which you must plan : transportation, parking, crowds.

Among the better-known commemorative events on Patriots Day is the Boston Marathon , which has been run now for over a century.

The re-enactment of the battle on Lexington Green starts at dawn (about 5:30am), but crowds of spectators begin to gather by 4 am, or even earlier. If you don't get there at least two hours early , you won't be able to find any good vantage point for the "battle."

Some people believe that to get the best views, you must stake out your spot three, four or even five hours before. (In other words, you spend the night there .)

About 5:30 am you will hear the redcoats marching along Battle Road as they approach Lexington Green.

Patriots Day events in nearby Concord are a bit nicer to your sleep-time. At 8:30 am the parade with lots of fife-and-drum bands and groups of Minutemen from surrounding towns and as far away as Michigan is followed by a re-enactment of the battle at Old North Bridge, commemorative ceremonies, and the repeated firing of brass cannons by the Concord Independent Battery .

Several church halls open to provide pancake breakfasts to the multitude.

Patriots Day is also the name of a movie (2016) about the Boston Marathon of April 15, 2013, and the terrorist bombings at the finish line.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

The Boothbay Harbor Fishermen's Festival , Boothbay Harbor ME, is on the second weekend in April, with seafood feasts, exhibits and games.

New England weather trends toward milder and more pleasant—but always unpredictable. A last snowfall is not unheard of, particularly in the mountains of northern New England; but Memorial Day , a national holiday, signals the official start of the summer tourism season . Many seasonal tourist services open for business, and are busy, at least on weekends, through June .

Blossom-covered tree, Woodstock VT

May brings spring to most of New England, with flowers abounding and trees in blossom and early leaf.

Many seasonal tourist services (small museums, campgrounds , summer-schedule flights, etc.) begin operating in May, at least on the weekends.

Days and hours of operation for summer seasonal attractions may be limited, but prices may also be lower.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day , officially May 30th, is celebrated on the last Monday in May, and the long weekend signals the official start of the summer tourism season .

Civil War Re-enactors, Concord MA

" Decoration Day " began on May 30, 1868, when relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms of Civil War dead decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery with flowers.

After World War I, the day became one to commemorate those who had served in the US military in any war.

Many towns organize parades or commemoration ceremonies on the last Monday in May , which was renamed Memorial Day .

The Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer travel and vacation season . On this weekend, highways are busy, buses, trains and planes may run near capacity, and reservations for transportation and lodgings are strongly advised.

The weather is unpredictable . Although it's often very pleasant, it can be cold and raw, chilly but sunny, warm and sunny, or hot and humid. You won't know until it arrives.

The summer tourism season ends unofficially on Labor Day , the first Monday in September.

Rooms at country inns and resort hotels are in great demand on the Memorial Day weekend, and on weekends through Labor Day (in September), but demand may be lower during the week especially in June and early July as New England children are still in school.

Days are long, school is still in session, there are no national holidays, so New England's attractions are uncrowded until late June when school lets out. Weather is mild, but changeable. Lobsters are in season now through the autumn and cheaper than in the cold months. Good month to visit!

Though the weather is changeable , it is usually fine for travel if you're adaptable. Lobsters are in season and cheaper than in the cold months.

Early June is not very busy in New England's vacation areas because most children are still in school .

But when school ends in mid-June , many families head out for their summer vacations at the beach in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, or in the mountains of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Accommodations , campgrounds , and other services are fairly well occupied on weekends in early June, but are busy most days of the week by late June.

Independence Day (July 4th) sees the tourist season in full swing. Prices climb to their highest and reservations are necessary for many services.

In July , the weather is warm to hot in most of New England, and it may be humid .

Lots of sunny days alternate with some days of rain . It can be foggy along the Maine coast sometimes, however. Lobsters are in season and July is an excellent month for a traditional New England clambake .

Tourists High Season

Early July sees the tourist season in full swing . The seven weeks from July 4th through Labor Day are the busiest time of the year . The beach resorts and islands are often filled to capacity. Reservations for lodgings, flights, ferryboats, etc. are essential.

The Fourth of July

The Independence Day holiday ( July 4th ), always celebrted on the day itself, is very busy. If it falls on a Friday or a Monday, travel is even busier, as New Englanders have a long weekend for a vacation .

America's War of Independence began at L>exington and Concord in 1775, so New Englanders know something about patriotism.

Color Guard, Concord MA

Independence Day , the Fourth of July, is celebrated on the day itself (not the nearest weekend), with parades, fireworks displays, speeches, picnics (especially at the beach), and cookouts everywhere.

The weather is usually hot, the beer cold, and the food plentiful. Lobster is plentiful, at the lowest prices of the year.

Almost every city and town organizes a patriotic parade , various civic groups sponsor picnics and fairs, and everyone celebrates independence and summertime.

Boston puts on a particularly spectacular display, with an elaborate fireworks show over the Charles River coordinated with a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade.

The traditional finale is the playing of Tchaikowsky's pyrotechnical 1812 Overture , complete with the firing of real brass cannons , all computer-coordinated with the fireworks display.

Boston , Massachusetts

Harborfest , a week of concerts, exhibits and special events culminates in the famous Boston Pops Fourth of July concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade in Boston : after Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (with real cannons), a mammoth fireworks display is ignited over the Charles River.

Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester MA

August in New England can be hot and humid . The " dog days " (hottest and most humid days) make everyone dream constantly of New England's beaches , chilly New England sea water, and air-conditioning.

There may be only one or two dog days, there may be more, or the weather may be delightfully temperate : warm to hot in the sun, pleasantly warm in the shade.

If it's hot, escape to the cool shade of Vermont 's Green Mountains , New Hampshire 's White Mountains , or the cooler, sometimes foggy coast of Maine . Go on a Maine windjammer cruise , with a lobster clambake on a deserted island. More...

Tourist High Season

All tourist services are filled to capacity , and advance reservations are advised for most everything, and essential for many things such as inn and resort hotel rooms, car ferries , and tables at the most popular vacation restaurants . Lobsters are in season and cheaper than in the cold months.

Travel smart and enjoy smaller crowds and lower hotel prices: visit cities on weekends , and the countryside on weekdays .

Labor Day , the first Monday after the first Sunday in September, is the end of the summer vacation season , though most attractions, including beaches , are open through September, and some into October. Children are back in school, so attractions are less crowded on weekdays. Good month to visit! Foliage season begins at the end of September and gets better and better into October.

Picking--and Juggling--Apples, Bolton MA

Labor Day Weekend

The 3-day Labor Day holiday weekend at the beginning of September is the unofficial end of the busy summer tourist season.

America's September salute to workers began in 1882, and thus predates the celebration of May Day (May 1). Labor groups demanded an 8-hour workday in 1884, to begin on May 1, 1886. The general strike and disastrous Haymarket riots that started on that date in Chicago, the Bread and Roses Strike in Lawrence MA in 1912, and the May Day labor riots of 1919, may be why the USA celebrates labor and workers' contributions in September rather than on the day that the rest of the world—and particularly the socialist and communist parties—now celebrate.

Although there are commemoration ceremonies, Labor Day is overwhelmingly a three-day-weekend national holiday. In New England, many people head to the beaches for a last swim before the weather turns cold, or to the mountains for a hike.

Highways and transportation are busy on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Monday afternoon.

Labor Day weekend is busy, but the two weeks following are a good time to travel since children are back in school, few families travel, services are uncrowded, and some price reductions are offered.

The weather is usually excellent : moderate temperatures, little of the heat of August or of the chill of October. Lobsters are still abundant and reasonably priced, though most will be hard-shelled now. More...

Weekends in September tend to be almost as busy as in August, but on mid-week days (Sunday through Thursday nights), those beach resorts and mountain villages that were so crowded just a few weeks before in August are now pleasantly low-key.

Fall Foliage Season

New England's fall foliage season begins in mid-September in northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ) and spreads southward.

By late September good foliage color begins to appear in the southern New England states ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island ).

The countryside and seacoasts can be crowded on weekends as city-dwellers enjoy the fine fall weather and go hiking, biking and apple-picking. More...

New England's glory : fall foliage season at its best, culminating on Columbus Day . Every inn, motel and B&B room in the countryside is reserved well in advance. The last day of the month is Hallowe'en .

In October , New England is a world-class tourist attraction because of the brilliant, varied colors of its autumn foliage .

The weather is usually wonderful : cool to warmish days, cool to chill evenings with lots of bright sun (if we're lucky). You can still have a fine lobster dinner at a reasonable price. More...

In northern New England ( Vermont , New Hampshire and Maine ) there will be some frosty nights, and perhaps a bit of snow.

Bright yellow beeches , flame-red and yellow maples , russet oaks and many other trees turn the countryside into a vast brilliantly-colored painter's canvas.

The blazing crescendo in foliage season is traditionally thought to be the weekend of Columbus Day , a holiday in most US states. Beautiful foliage color lasts well into November.

Autumn maple color over the Old Burying Ground in Concord MA

First celebrated in New York City on October 12, 1792, Columbus Day commemorates Captain Christopher Columbus 's landfall in the New World at the Bahamas in 1492. In recent years, New Englanders have also commemorated the indigeonous people who lived on this continent before the advent of Europeans and Africans.

Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day

In New England, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , is a national holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October , makes a long weekend that is traditionally considered the height of New England's fall foliage season.

New Englanders pour out of the cities, visitors come from around the world, and special excursion trains and buses packed with " leaf peepers " cruise through the countryside to enjoy the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows and browns of the region's forests of maple, beech, birch and other deciduous trees.

Along with August and Labor Day, foliage season and Columbus Day are the busiest tourism times in New England .

Make Reservations!

If you plan to travel here from early to late October—and especially on Columbus Day weekend — m ake your lodging and transportation reservations as early as possible!

If you have no reservations, you may still be able to find a place to stay, but it may not be of the type, or in the location, that you prefer.

Columbus Day is not the end of foliage season—and may not even be at the " peak color " of the season. Don't think that you must be in New England on Columbus Day weekend to enjoy good foliage color.

Peak color usually begins first in the relatively colder climate of mountainous northern New England and slowly spreads southward, coming much later to the warm shores of Long Island Sound .

It may begin in the north in mid- or late September, and the wave of color finally fade from the southern New England shores of Connecticut and Rhode Island by mid-November.

In Boston , hotels are often filled by conventioneers since October is also a popular month for meetings and conferences.

In the countryside, every hote l, motel , country inn and guest house room is reserved well in advance.

Check room rates and availability here...

Some inns and seasonal services close for the winter after the Columbus Day weekend, and late October is fairly quiet in the countryside , though busy in the cities.

If you plan to tour at this time, however, there will be plenty of services for you, you'll enjoy lower prices , no crowds , and pockets of late-maturing fall color in many places, especially in the southern New England states.

The last evening of the month, October 31st, is celebrated as Hallowe'en, America's version of All Saints' Day.

Halloween Jack-o-Lantern, Concord MA

Hallowe'en started out spooky and malevolent, but has been transformed by jaunty American commercialism into a fun kids' festival of sweet consumption. Children dress in costumes ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, teenagers pull pranks....especially in Salem , Massachusetts.

A Bit of History

All Saints Day (November 1) is a principal feast of the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, probably following the medieval custom of commemorating "saints known and unknown" on this day, sometimes known as Allhallows or Hallowmass .

In countries with Celtic influence the vigil on the night before All Saints, the evening of October 31st, incorporated old customs of the Celtic and British Isles, including lighting bonfires , fortune-telling , masquerading and mummery (masked performers in a folk play or mime).

These customs probably had more to do with the onset of winter (the "dead season"), traditionally commemorated on November 1st in pagan societies, than with the celebration of Christian saints.

Trick-or-Treating

In America today the saints have no part to play on October 31st. Hallowe'en is a masquerade festival when children dress in costume and go door to door ("trick-or-treating") asking for sweet treats .

Traditional costumes echo the theme of death and monstrosity: witches, ghosts, goblins, monsters, but in fact any fantasy costume is acceptable, from fairies and spacemen to fruits, vegetables, playing cards and roadkill.

" Trick or Treat ," the door-to-door custom, used to be a jocular, minor shake-down routine: "give me a treat or I'll play a trick on you."

Although vandalism and pranks (occasionally vicious) are still in evidence, the "trick" part of the holiday has little part anymore, at least among the throngs of small children who fill the streets on Hallowe'en evening, going from house to decorated house asking for treats.

The symbol of welcome for trick-or-treaters is having the house's porch light on, and/or a lighted jack-o-lantern and perhaps other Hallowe'en-theme decorations: ghosts, witches, black cats and harvest symbols.

Adults may attend Hallowe'en-themed parties, often in costume.

Hallowe'en in Salem MA

Unfortunately, the noble city of Salem MA is inundated with Hallowe'en revellers every year because of a mistaken belief in its link to witchcraft . More...

The unfortunate martyred souls persecuted by superstitious colonial officials and religious bigots in Salem during the Salem witch trials of 1692 must turn in their graves at the sight of thoughtless romantics dizzy with ditzy visions who turn Salem into an absurd carnival of bizarre pseudo-mystical claptrap every October 31st—but it's good for business.

The Maine Cheese Guild holds its Open Creamery Day in October, the day on which you can visit its member artisanal cheesemakers and see how their tasty cheeses are made.

Many inns and seasonal attractions close after Columbus Day (mid-October), so November is a slow month for travel. The foliage crowds have departed and the ski crowds have not yet arrived. With luck, we may get Indian summer . Then, Thanksgiving , a national holiday, is the busiest travel time of the entire year .

Mount Washington, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Fall foliage season usually extends well into November, particularly in the southern New England states, and even late in the month you'll come across protected valleys still aflame with color.

Veterans' Day

Grave of Louisa May Alcott in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord MA

Veterans Day , November 11th, is a US national holiday commemorating those who have served in the US military forces.

The holiday extends to three days the early- or mid-month weekend nearest November 11th. Businesses and government offices are closed for the day, as are some shops and stores.

All cities and towns remember the day with patriotic decorations, flags, parades and speeches . Often there are ceremonies and prayers in cemeteries where war veterans are buried.

Veterans Day is especially important in New England, as this region of the country has sent its young men and women off to war for longer than any other part of the USA.

The graves of Revolutionary War Minutemen in Lexington and Concord MA are especially commemorated, as these were the first to risk their lives in their country's service.

Veterans Day celebrates the service not just of soldiers, but also of those who brought mercy and comfort to the afflicted of war, such as Concord's Louisa May Alcott.

Ms Alcott served as a nurses' aid in a hospital near Washington during the Civil War. She suffered from illness contracted during her service, never fully regained robust health, and her illness may have contributed to her early death.

With luck, New England's fall foliage season lingers until mid-November, at least in a few places, and New Englanders feel especially lucky if Indian summer brings warm days and not-too-cold nights.

By mid-month the snow has usually arrived in the mountains of the northern New England states, ski resorts begin to open a few lifts and trails, and there may be some flurries or fast-melting snow in the south, especially later in the month around Thanksgiving .

Thanksgiving

The fourth Thursday in November celebrates the arrival of English Calvinist Pilgrims in Plymouth MA, and their establishment, with Wampanoag (Native American) aid, of a successful colony.

Pilgrim Commemoration

Thanksgiving commemorates the first successful year (1621) of the Pilgrim colony at Plymouth MA.

After the first terrible winter, when half of the Pilgrims died, came a summer of abundant crops and successfully hunted game. After the harvest was gathered, the Pilgrims reportedly held a feast of thanksgiving and invited their Wampanoag neighbors who had aided their survival.

President George Washington designated November 26, 1789 as a day of thanksgiving for the new US Constitution, but it was President Abraham Lincoln who, in the midst of the Civil War, declared Thanksgiving to be an annual federal holiday.

Every November, the original Thanksgiving celebration is re-enacted at Plimoth Patuxet Museums i n Plymouth MA.

A Family Holiday

Everyone wants to be with family at Thanksgiving. If this is not possible, they want to be with friends .

Traditional foods served at the Thursday dinner include roast stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (yams), sweet corn, green beans, lima beans, salads, and of course sweet pumpkin pie for dessert.

Strangers and foreigners are invited to join in the feast and join a group of friends or family. No one wants to be alone, or for others to be alone, on the day of national thanksgiving.

If you're visiting New England at Thanksgiving, strike up an acquaintance and you'll probably be invited to join the feast.

Travel Nightmare

This means that the week of Thanksgiving is also the busiest travel time of the entire year in the USA as everyone heads home to be with family: 40 million travelers , 31 million on the highways, 29,000 flights. Flights are fully booked months in advance, highways are clogged, trains and buses are packed to capacity. Transport is slow everywhere.

Wednesday , the day before Thanksgiving, is usually the busiest day, next is the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Tuesday and Saturday of that week also see heavy travel.

The Weather

With a bit of luck, New England's Indian summer may coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday. Fall foliage season and its colorful trees have passed, making a few days of warmth even more welcome.

The Mini-Low-Season

By the way, the weeks in November before Thanksgiving, and the weeks after Thanksgiving until mid-December (that is, before the ramp-up to the Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's holidays), are excellent times to travel in New England. Transport is uncrowded and fares are lower, although summer businesses are closed off-season.

Some inns also close in November, reopening in December with the advent of ski season .

Get Ready for Skiing!

New England's ski resorts begin to make their own snow if nature has not provided the traditional cover, and some eager skiers take advantage of the Veterans Day holiday (November 11th) for a first schuss down the slopes. By the end of the month most of the large resorts are in action.

Early December travel is easy and inexpensive, but after December 15th, airfares rise, roads become more crowded, everything—especially shopping —is busier right up to Christmas and New Year's Day .

Lighting the holiday tree, Concord MA

Winter comes to northern New England ( Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont ) in November, but by December the entire region is in its thrall.

High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C).

Usually there is some snow , although in a snowless winter December is best for ice skating on New England's thousands of glacial lakes and ponds. Once snow arrives in quantity after the ponds freeze, degrading the ice surface, the skating season may be over for the winter (barring a January thaw and re-freeze.)

New England ski resorts are open in December, and though they may be fairly busy on weekends , innkeepers offer special low prices on weekdays to lure vacationers.

The Holidays

Christmas at The Breakers, Newport RI

Until the national holidays of Christmas (December 25th) and New Year's Day (January 1), this is not a busy month for tourism. Travel is heavy on the day or two preceding the 25th and the day or two following, then there is a lull until New Year 's, when travel intensifies again.

The holidays are a time of tradition, and as New England is a traditional place, Christmas fits right in. Government offices, banks, most businesses and many public facilities such as museums and libraries are open on Christmas Eve (December 24th), but closed on December 25th.

Colleges and universities tend to close for vacation from just before the 25th until after New Year's Day.

In Boston , a towering Nova Scotia white spruce is erected on Boston Common, a gift of the people of Halifax, perpetually thankful for the aid Boston gave to Halifax after the terrifying munitions explosion of December 6, 1917—the largest man-made explosion in history until that time—leveled most of the city.

In Newport RI , several of the city's sumptuous mansions are decorated for the holidays and opened to visitors for tours, concerts, mulled cider and cookies. The holidays are a great time to visit Newport.

Mystic Seaport in Mystic CT has a special program of holiday festivities.

Nantucket MA features carolers in Victorian garb , art exhibits, and tours of historic houses.

The Interim

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is one long festival in New England.

On December 26th, the day after the Christmas holiday, the shops and stores re-open to mobs of bargain-hunters eager to get their hands on the heavily-discounted merchandise left over from the frenetic post-Thanksgiving shopping season.

Colleges, universities and schools are on vacation, so young people are everywhere, and especially in the cinemas.

In the holiday interim, many New Englanders go skiing and snowboarding , or take short vacations to New York City , which is very busy then.

First Night/New Year's Eve

As in most of the world, the last day of the year, December 31st , is a perfectly good excuse for a party—in this case, New Year's Eve and First Night .

Ice Sculpture, Boston MA

First Night varies from place to place, but the common theme is good clean fun despite the cold. Arts are prominent, including music, sculpture (ice sculptures are a favorite), exhibitions, costumes, and even parades with decorations and floats. Some cities in the region, especially Boston , organize special amusements and entertainments.

Enjoy the music, performances, shows, parades and processions, lights, noise and winter merriment to drive away the cold and the dark.

Boston's First Night features indoor and outdoor concerts , an ice sculpture show and competition on Boston Common, fireworks over the river, and a dozen other activities.

Burlington VT also has elaborate First Night activities and entertainments.

New Year's Day

New Year's Day is a national holiday. Virtually everything is closed for the holiday: offices, businesses, museums, attractions—all closed.

7 Fun Things To Do In New England in November

Vanessa | New England + Places

While it may not be the most beautiful time of the year to visit New England, November brings cooler weather, naked trees and fewer tourists. New England in November is, well, unpredictable. Since moving here 5 years ago we have had snow on Thanksgiving, leaves until the middle of the month, and bitter cold. I don’t know that there is a “normal” for New England in November (or in any month, for that matter) but have no fear, there are still some great things to do if you decide to visit New England in November.

3. Plimouth Plantation : The most popular option, and to be honest the reason most people visit in the month of November. Now I have yet to visit Plimouth Plantation for their Thanksgiving Feast but I am trying to convince Corey that it’s a great idea for this year (check back to see if I was actually able to convince him.)

You see, every autumn, according to their website, Plimouth Plantation offers an “immensely popular Thanksgiving dining programs. Fresh ingredients, mouthwatering flavors, festive surroundings, and a sense of history that can be found nowhere else in the world.” Doesn’t that sound awesome?!? Maybe it’s the history nerd in me, but I love the idea of having a Thanksgiving meal with Pilgrim role-players and native interpreters.

Unfortunately, you have to book early because slots for Thanksgiving Day fill up fast. It’s the beginning of November and there is only 1 time slot left for Thanksgiving Day this year. In case you don’t want to be out on the day of thanksgiving, they also offer a time slot on Friday, Nov 23. For more information on visiting Plimouth Plantation, check out their website here .

If you want to read more about Plymouth, Massachusetts click here and for more information on the first Thanksgiving, check out my history nuggets here .

4. Old Sturbridge Village : in Massachusetts for if you want to get that historical feel but don’t feel like dealing with the crowds at Plimouth Plantation! Go back to the 1830’s and experience Thanksgiving in New England at Old Sturbridge Village. Every Wednesday – Sunday from 9:30 am – 4 pm in November experience Bounty: Thanksgiving. On weekends, you can enjoy a delicious bountiful harvest buffet in the Bullard Tavern from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm for $21.95 for adults.

5. Stratton Mountain Resort : in Vermont offers Stratton Village Stroll starting Nov 23 rd (yep the day after Thanksgiving). The tree lighting is at 5:30 pm complete with carolers from 5:30 to 8 pm. This event also marks the start of ski season at Stratton!

6. Lighting of the Nubble : if you are in New England for Thanksgiving you can’t miss the lighting of Nubble Lighthouse (Cape Neddick Lighthouse) on November 24 th from 5pm5 pm – 7 pm. Santa will be there with music, cookies and yummy hot chocolate.

7. Bright Night in Forest Park : Springfield, MA – If you want to get into the Christmas spirit you can’t miss Bright Nights at 300 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA 01108. Running from November 21 – January 1 (with the exception of Nov 26 and 27). Mon – Fri from 5 pm to 9 pm. Sat – Sun from 5 pm to 11 pm. The rates may vary based on vehicle type but will be somewhere between $18-$21 per vehicle. All major credit cards are accepted. This Christmas light extravaganza has been rated as one of the top ten holiday attractions in North America and has welcomed over 3.8 million visitors.

And seriously how is it that time of year already? Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is my favorite, BUT this year really flew by!

Best Places to Visit in New England: Vermont

Burlington, vermont.

an image of an empty shopping street on a sunny day. colorful banners cross over the blue sky and a long bricked walkway leads to a distant church

One of the best places to visit in New England is Burlington, Vermont, a place I lived for several years!

Do you like the outdoors, craft beer, and progressive-minded folk? You will love the hip city of Burlington and the many fun things to do here . Set on the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington has a small-town vibe but plenty going on.

The greater Burlington area is a must-visit mecca for foodies and craft beer lovers . There are tons of breweries around here and an explosion of farm-to-table cuisine that is well worth the trip. Hard cider is making a strong showing in New England , too, and Foam Brewers is a great place to try it in Burlington. They’re located near the Lake Champlain waterfront, making it a great place to be on a summer afternoon.

A placard reading

From cool coffee shops to great places to stay to fun, free things to see and do , Burlington is one of the best places for a New England vacation!

Church Street Marketplace is one of the most popular places to go in Burlington, with great shopping, restaurants, and a whole lotta entertainment, both on the streets and in the businesses surrounding.

The lake is the focus of much of the Burlington’s outdoor activities. The Burlington Bike Path skirts the edges for several miles, providing an ideal route for a bike ride or a run. There’s lots of great hiking nearby , too.

Getting out on the water is a must, whether you want to try sailing, stand up paddle boarding or kayaking. You can also hop aboard one of the bigger boats, the scenic ferries. These will take you across to the other side (NY state) or around for a scenic cruise of this miniature “Great” lake. Check out some of the best ways to get out on Lake Champlain here!

Stowe, Vermont

Aerial view of the mountains with fall leaves and a white church with steeple in the midst of them at a New England vacation destination

Stowe, Vermont, renowned as a skiing paradise, is a year-round New England gem. In winter, the town truly shines.

Stowe Mountain Resort beckons with top-tier skiing and snowboarding, while the town, illuminated with holiday lights, offers a warm welcome with its quaint streets. Cozy up in local cafes or glide across the Stowe Ice Rink.

For a unique experience, embrace the Austrian charm of the Trapp Family Lodge, famous for its connections to “The Sound of Music.” I stayed here myself last spring and absolutely adored its classic, rustic vibe.

Autumn in Stowe is equally enchanting. The area boasts some of the most spectacular fall foliage, creating a vivid backdrop for seasonal activities.

A short drive to Waterbury brings you to the Cold Hollow Cider Mill, one of my favorite New England places to visit for its renowned apple cider donuts and a glimpse into traditional cider-making processes.

Stowe has miles of fantastic hiking trails, and in fall, the views are particularly exquisite. Not into hiking? View the colors from above via the Stowe Gondola Skyride, which will carry you to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak.

Woodstock, Vermont

Another place to visit in New England I recommend is the town of Woodstock, VT. This scenic New England destination is a breath of fresh air and absolutely one of my favorite New England towns to visit.

Its picturesque downtown area, complete with its own historic covered bridge, captures the region’s essence. Explore the unique shops and cozy cafes, all set within historic buildings, and each offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The Billings Farm & Museum is another highlight, showcasing Vermont’s agricultural history in an engaging way. You can meet the cows and see how an actual working farm is run. My little family had a blast here!

For nature enthusiasts, the stunning views at Quechee Gorge – Vermont’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ – are essential. This spot offers impressive vistas and is perfect for photography and nature exploration.

Annually, thousands visit Woodstock to enjoy its seasonal beauty, from summer’s lush greenery to autumn’s foliage. It’s also known as a fabulous Christmas town , with its Victorian-style Wassail Weekend taking center stage.

Best Places to Visit in New England: New Hampshire

Portsmouth, new hampshire.

New Hampshire has a very small stretch of coastline and Portsmouth is a small city located here. Portsmouth is very historic, which is great for visitors to New England.  Settled in 1623, it is actually the third oldest city in the nation, and one of my favorite places to visit.

To explore some of this history, check out Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum with more than 30 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries. This is a living history museum, too, with actors portraying historic residents of the town and what life may have been like.

A body of water with boats and buildings in the distance in New England.

In Portsmouth, you can also wander along the waterfront. For shopping and dining (Portsmouth has a very lively food scene) Market Square is the center of things. There are some pretty cool bars and breweries in Portsmouth, too!

North Conway, New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s White Mountains are impressive, exciting, and draw thousands of outdoorsy folk each year. These mountains, the tallest in New England, offer spectacular hiking and more.

North Conway is one of my favorite places for a New England vacation , providing the perfect gateway to the attractions of the White Mountain National Forest.

Someone sitting on a rocky ledge looking at a view of water and mountains with fall leaves in New England

Conway is a mountain town providing a great mix of shopping, restaurants , and outdoor activities. The Saco River runs nearby, so Conway is a good jumping-off point for tubing or paddling in the river, with lots of cool places to stay .

Pop up to the towns of Bartlett and Jackson if you want to head even more into the mountains. Both are very nice areas with lots to do and see. Near Bartlett you can stop by Diana’s Baths, a beautiful area of cascading waterfalls and gentle pools. On a hot summer’s day, it’s the perfect place to cool off.

Got extra time in NH? Check out the town of Lincoln, too.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Of course, you’ll want to have America’s Hometown on your list of places to visit in New England!

One of the most charming historic towns in the region, Plymouth is full of historical sites like Plymouth Rock and Mayflower II , a scale replica of the historic vessel that carried the Pilgrims across the sea in 1620!

Also in Plymouth are a variety of fantastic restaurants and places to stay, including Mirbeau Inn and Spa. History, culture, and a little spa-cation? Why not?

The Lakes Region, New Hampshire

If you’re looking for a place to spend summer in New England , we can’t recommend enough the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Here you’ll find lakes on lakes on lakes.

In the summertime, these alluring bodies of water are refreshing and calm. They are perfect for swimming with family and friends, boating, or even as a backdrop to your barbecue.

The Lakes Region of NH includes the area surrounding Lake Winnipesaukee , Winnisquam Lake, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake, among other smaller lakes and ponds (there are 273 in total!).

Some of the towns not to miss include adorable Meredith (right on Lake Winnipesaukee), fun Laconia, and pretty Center Harbor.

Best Places to Visit in New England: Massachusetts

Martha’s vineyard, massachusetts.

A body of water with a lighthouse and houses in the distance in New England

This island off the coast of Massachusetts is one of the most beautiful New England spots, especially for a summer trip.

Martha’s Vineyard is a fun getaway . While you’re not coming here for the nightlife, you’re coming here for relaxation and luxury (and delicious restaurants, beautiful inns and hotels, and cool vacation rentals !) Oak Bluffs is an especially cool town to explore.

One of the best things to do on the island is simply to rent a bike and go for a ride. Explore lighthouses as well as the six towns that make up the island. Shopping and art are also things you’ll find on Martha’s Vineyard in abundance.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

In Western Massachusetts is the region known as the Berkshires. This area is worlds away from Boston, but it’s not very far as the crow flies. If you’re looking for a bit of country living in MA, this is the region to visit.

This area is a popular destination for travelers, especially in the warmer months.

Culture abounds in the Berkshires, from spots like Mass MoCA and other museums to venue Tanglewood , where you can enjoy concerts from leading symphonies and folk artists like James Taylor to theatre productions put on by the well-known, professional Shakespeare & Company .

In addition to culture, you will find plenty of history. In Lenox, visit the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum , an 1890s home that’s open for tours. If you have literary interest, you may also wish to stop by The Mount , Edith Wharton’s turn-of-the-century estate.

There are many opportunities for outdoor adventuring in the Berkshires. Plenty of hiking trails snake the region, bike routes, and even some ski resorts, plus plenty of cool vacation rentals , cute cabins , and great places to eat .

It’s a great place to visit in the winter , too!

Boston, Massachusetts

Some of the best New England vacations start in Boston, and many stay there! It’s one of my favorite places for a wonderful New England vacay.

Boston has so much to do for locals and visitors alike. Sports fans, history lovers, culture snobs? Whatever your pleasure, Boston has a site, walking tour, attraction, or event you’ll be psyched about.

Walking the Freedom Trail is a Boston bucket list item , whether you’re a history buff or not. This 2.5-mile path takes you past 16 historic sites, each a chapter in the story of America’s fight for independence, and it’s a super easy walk.

As you walk the trail, you’ll encounter iconic colonial sites like Boston Common, the Paul Revere House, Old North Church, and Bunker Hill Monument.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

My son's first trip to New England at 2 months old - Chatham, MA

We couldn’t choose just one Cape Cod town , so we’ll just give you a gentle nudge in the right direction here so you can explore and discover for yourself what makes the Cape one of the most popular New England vacation spots!

You’ve got peaceful walking trails and scenic views along Cape Cod National Seashore, beautiful beaches, lighthouses, and so much more.

Go whale watching , stroll the darling downtown areas and their art galleries and gift shops, visit the wineries, and fill your belly at the top restaurants on the Cape . Truly, Cape Cod is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in New England, so seafood lovers will rejoice!

You’ll find excellent places to visit and stay all around the Cape , so you won’t go wrong wherever you choose! We especially loved our stay at the charming Captain’s House Inn in Chatham .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket, an idyllic island off the coast of Massachusetts, stands as one of New England’s premier vacation destinations. Known for its pristine beaches, Nantucket offers a serene escape with its vast stretches of sand and crystal-clear waters, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and sailing. The island’s rich history is woven into the cobbled streets of Nantucket Town, where visitors can explore unique museums, charming boutiques, and dine in exquisite seafood restaurants.

The iconic Brant Point Lighthouse provides a picturesque backdrop for sunset viewing. Nantucket’s natural beauty extends beyond its beaches to the conservation lands, offering miles of biking and hiking trails. With its blend of natural splendor, historical charm, and a relaxed, upscale atmosphere, Nantucket truly captures the essence of a quintessential New England retreat!

While Nantucket is a lovely New England summer destination, it has its off season charm, too! Consider a winter trip to Nantucket , a unique experience which gives you the opportunity to have one of New England’s most popular islands feel like it’s all yours.

Salem, Massachusetts

A woman stands in front of a Hocus Pocus filming site in Salem, Massachusetts

Salem is one of my all time favorite New England vacation destinations, for many reasons! For one, I’m a child of the 90s and thus, Hocus Pocus was a part of my early Halloween experience. Being able to explore the filming sites and see places in person for Halloween is a BLAST.

Secondly, it’s just a very cool seaside town to visit. There are a ton of excellent restaurants , neat shops, informative tours (including spooky ghost tours !), historical sites, and more.

I recommend everyone add Salem MA to their New England bucket list!

Best Places to Visit in New England: Maine

Acadia national park, maine.

new england travel in november

Maine is home to some of the best vacation spots in New England and Acadia has to be near the top of that list. Acadia National Park is unlike any other part of New England. This breathtaking national park, spanning a vast 47,000 acres and renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty, ranks among the top 10 most visited national parks in the United States. Here, the mountains and the ocean collide, and visitors can engage in hiking, camping, and exploring, all with spectacular views surrounding them.

Speaking of views, one of the most memorable things to do in Acadia is to watch a sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. Did you know, this is one of the first spots the sun touches on the entire East Coast? So by witnessing a Cadillac Mountain sunrise, you will actually be one of the first people to greet the new day.

The town of Bar Harbor is also located on Mount Desert Island, just a few minutes from Acadia. Bar Harbor is filled with restaurants, shops, and great places to stay , as well as home to a beautiful harbor.

Midcoast Maine

Many boats in a harbor with buildings in the background in a popular New England getaway spot

One of the best New England vacation destinations has to be the coast of Maine. But with hundreds of miles of coastline, where do you start? We recommend Maine’s Midcoast.

Generally speaking, this region runs from Brunswick (just north of Portland) up to around Belfast, just south of Mt. Desert Island. This whole area is beautiful and, as you can imagine, very coastal-focused.

In addition to museums, art, history, and food, MidCoast Maine is home to many exciting events and festivals.

As Visit Maine says: “Speaking of festivals, catch Weinerfest (that’s all things Dachshund) in Belfast, the  Maine Lobster Festival  in Rockland , and Damariscotta’s  Pumpkinfest . And let the good times and big cheese roll at the  Highland Games & Scottish Festival in Topsham.”

Most of all, you’ll want to get out on the water. Our favorite way is to head out on an overnight, multi-day schooner adventure ; it’s a very unique New England vacation idea!

Here you’ll find all the classic New England pastimes you know and love. In particular, there is an abundance of outdoor activities (hiking, paddling, fishing) as well as exceptional Antique shops and farm to table restaurants .

The Litchfield Hills make up a fair portion of the region, and include towns such as Torrington, Woodbury, Kent, Cornwall, and Washington (very English-sounding names, aren’t they?).

Mystic, Connecticut

A long walking pier beside the Mystic River in Mystic Connecticut

Next up is Mystic, Connecticut: one of the best vacation spots in New England. This is a classic New England seaside destination, known for its marine trade legacy and shipbuilding. Today it is a charming waterfront village on the Mystic River. Prior to its fame from the 1988 film “Mystic Pizza,” the Mystic region was renowned for constructing wooden clipper ships. The Mystic Seaport Museum, a top maritime museum in the nation, is the place to go to learn more about this. Here you can discover more about New England’s maritime history, see historic ships, enjoy interactive exhibits, and wander through the recreated 19th-century village and historical trade shops.

Downtown Mystic features quaint buildings and the 1922 Mystic River Bascule Bridge, which raises every hour in the summer months to allow boats to pass beneath. You can visit boutique shops, restaurants, and the original Mystic Pizza shop.

That’s not all there is to do in Mystic either . The Mystic Aquarium is a must; it’s the only New England aquarium with beluga whales (my personal favorite) as well as just one of two aquariums in the U.S. featuring Steller sea lions.

Mystic is also just a hop, skip, and jump from other Connecticut attractions. It’s a very small state, after all! Plus, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat and stay in this cool coastal New England vacation destination.

10 Best Places to Travel in November

Here are 10 of the best places to visit in November in the United States and around the world.

new england travel in november

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The holiday season kicks off in late November, and the long Thanksgiving weekend is a popular time for a getaway. Some travelers will seek sunny destinations like Jamaica, Los Cabos, or Florida, while others embrace the holiday spirit with a trip to festive spots like New York City. Lively festivals, lush beach resorts, and national parks draw travelers to places near and far, so whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a longer trip abroad, we’ve got you covered. Here are the best places to travel in November in the United States and around the world.

North Queensland, Australia

Vicki Smith/Getty Images

It’s spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and November borders the sunny dry season and the more humid season, with temperatures around 80 degrees. Snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, and visitors can get there from Cairns in an hour or two. (Some choose to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef on land with a road trip starting in Cairns.) Another Queensland attraction, the Kuranda Train and Skyrail takes guests on a 90-minute ride through tropical rainforest, past waterfalls, and into the Barron Gorge for a scenic, exciting rail journey. The spectacle of coral spawning — a burst of color and a vibrant sign of life in the Great Barrier Reef — takes place in November around the full moon. Stay nearby at Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns for a convenient base for exploring the area.

New York City, New York

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

Whether you visit for shopping, Broadway shows, museums, or restaurants, New York City never disappoints. November begins the holiday season, always a festive time in the Big Apple. There’s a chill in the air as New York’s famous window displays and holiday markets attract crowds, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (Nov. 23) and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting (Nov. 29) celebrate the season. Hotels throughout the five boroughs offer a range of places to stay; Manhattan properties including Pendry Manhattan West , Ritz-Carlton New York NoMad , and The Wall Street Hotel were ranked among the top hotels in New York City in the 2023 Travel + Leisure ’s World’s Best Awards .

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Temperatures in the mid-80s, attractive room rates, and the end of hurricane season make November a good time to head to Jamaica. The third-largest Caribbean island, Jamaica has three airports and four main cruise ports as well as six resort areas: Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, Port Antonio, and South Coast. Stunning beaches , great music, delicious food, and local culture are among the many reasons to visit the island country. Many travelers opt to stay at an all-inclusive resort for a worry-free vacation, but there is a variety of accommodations to explore. If you don’t want to stay at an all-inclusive property, Half Moon and Tryall Club in Montego Bay and Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios are worth checking out. The annual Jamaica Invitational Pro-am golf event will be held Nov. 15-19 in Montego Bay.

Phoenix, Arizona

Nik Pennington/Travel + Leisure

Both Phoenix and Scottsdale are home to gorgeous hotels, starry skies, stunning scenery, and perfect November weather for being outdoors, so you can hit the golf course, lounge by the pool, or hike a scenic path during your autumn trip. In Scottsdale , Canal Convergence (Nov. 3-12) is an exciting light, water, and art event along the waterfront with live music, food, and more. Golf is a major attraction in the Phoenix area, with courses at the renowned Arizona Biltmore , The Wigwam , JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort , and many more. Just outside the Phoenix metro area, Castle Hot Springs , a luxury wellness retreat, features mineral hot springs, a spa, guided hikes, yoga, an onsite farm, and a Via Ferrata adventure course.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure

In Los Cabos, the month begins with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1-2) featuring colorful parades, altars, and events to honor loved ones who have passed away. Later in the month, the annual Los Cabos International Film Festival is set for Nov. 29-Dec. 3. No matter when you visit, sunning on gorgeous beaches, playing golf, fishing, and surfing are just a few of the top things to do. Visitors can choose from an array of hotels, including all-inclusive resorts like the luxurious Grand Velas Los Cabos . Or, you can be among the first to stay at the new Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos , an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury hotel opening in time for Thanksgiving. The five-star Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal will welcome Michelin-starred Chef Enrique Casarrubias from Nov. 9-12.

The Florida Keys, Florida

The 125-mile island chain at the southern tip of Florida is celebrating its bicentennial this year. Sunny weather, clear-blue waters, and lots of things to do draw visitors to the islands throughout the year. Visitors can go diving and snorkeling in the coral barrier reef or at Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first undersea park in the U.S. There’s plenty to do on dry land as well, and film fans may want to arrive for the Key West Film Festival (Nov. 15-19). Lodging ranges from guest houses to posh resorts, including all-inclusive and adults-only Bungalows Key Largo and the expansive Islamorada Resort Collection , with multiple resorts to choose from. On Key West, options include the Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton , The Marker Key West Harbor Resort , or Cuban-inspired Havana Cabana . Visitors can fly directly to Key West or drive from South Florida along the picturesque Overseas Highway .

Tel Aviv, Israel

Anton Petrus/Getty Images

Pleasant weather in the 70s and lots to do in this city on the Mediterranean Sea make November an ideal time to visit Tel Aviv. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and great food, Tel Aviv is less than an hour away from Jerusalem, convenient for travelers who plan to also experience the ancient holy city. The Carmel and Levinsky markets, Mediterranean beaches, and lively nightlife are among the top things to do in Tel Aviv. Lovely places to stay include The Norman , R48 Hotel & Garden , The David Kempinski , and The Vera . Set to open in October, The George combines a members’ club, hotel, and co-working space and offers culinary and wellness experiences.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a year-round destination with shows, casinos, amusement park rides, museums, shopping, and attractions for the whole family . Must-see spots include the Fountains of Bellagio, the High Roller observation wheel, the Fremont Street Experience, and the Venetian Resort’s gondolas. With over 150,000 hotel rooms spread across the Las Vegas area, there are plenty of fantastic resorts to choose from. Favorites include Caesars Palace , The Wynn , Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas , Bellagio , MGM Grand , and Resorts World . As if this glittering town needed more excitement, the Las Vegas Formula 1 Grand Prix (Nov. 16-18) will have drivers weaving past hotels and casinos on the Strip at speeds up to 212 miles per hour.

Yosemite National Park, California

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

A major advantage of a November visit to Yosemite is that summer crowds are gone, and you can enjoy the scenery and serenity of the park during crisp autumn days. The Ahwahnee Hotel is open year round with renovations set to be completed in October; the historic property is wonderful to see even if you don’t spend the night. Tenaya at Yosemite , set deep in the sequoia forest, is also open in November with a variety of accommodations including suites, cabins, and cottages. From Nov. 4-6, Château du Sureau , a Relais & Châteaux resort, will partner with The Ansel Adams Gallery for Yosemite Photography Weekend . The charming resort features 10 guest rooms, a two-bedroom villa, and The Elderberry House restaurant.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Violet Smirnova/Travel + Leisure

Mild autumn weather with a chance of rain makes November a pleasant time in New Orleans. Along with beignets, po’boys, and gumbo, there are lots of reasons to visit. The city’s Caribbean heritage is celebrated with dance, music, and cuisine at the Bayou Bacchanal (Nov. 3-4). The New Orleans Film Festival is set for Nov. 2-7 with parties, events, and panels in venues across the city. Get to know chefs, mixologists, and bartenders in NOLA during Cocktail Week from Nov. 6-12. The acclaimed National WWII Museum will open a new wing called the Liberation Pavilion , exploring the end of the war, the Holocaust, and the postwar years, with a grand opening on Nov. 3. Stay at one of the city’s many hotels, including the Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans , Kimpton Hotel Fontenot , or Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans .

What Are The Most Beautiful Places In New England In The Fall?

Most places in New England will put on a wonderful foliage display, but here are some standouts when it comes to the most beautiful places in New England in the fall:

  • Acadia National Park in Maine
  • White Mountains in New Hampshire
  • Vermont countryside (most of Vermont is a stand out in the fall season)
  • Litchfield Hills region in Connecticut
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • The Berkshires in Massachusetts

What Are The Best New England States To Visit In The Fall?

New England is comprised of 6 states: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, and each of them will provide an amazing fall trip. In other words, there’s no wrong New England state to visit in the fall, but there are different reasons to visit each one this time of the year

For example, for fall foliage, Vermont and New Hampshire are where its at. But for discounts on hotels, the coast is a great choice because it’s shoulder season. Here’s a general breakdown to help you decide which is the best to visit in the fall for the type of trip you want to take.

Also, keep in mind that many popular destinations are close to one another, so if you have longer than a few days, you can easily see more than two states.

Vermont : If I had to pick one New England state to visit in the fall for foliage, I would choose Vermont. Vermont is packed with incredibly charming towns, tons of romantic and cozy inns, covered bridges and amazing foliage landscapes in the fall. For those idyllic postcard landscapes in the countryside, and small towns, this is the place to be.

New Hampshire: Another one of the best for fall foliage in the region! You’ll also find amazing hiking, quaint towns, covered bridges, and the White Mountains National Forest . There are also great cities in New Hampshire for a foliage getaway, including Portsmouth and Keene.

Massachusetts : Known for its stunning coastline, this is an all-around great place for a fall visit because of variety of destinations including The Berkshires, Salem, and Boston (all of which have great foliage). It’s also perfect if you’re looking to explore the Cape Cod region, and the rest of the coastline) during a quieter time – and also tour a cranberry bog. And there are some wonderful, quaint towns with amazing fall foliage throughout Massachusetts!

Rhode Island : An amazing coastal state, and the best way to experience it in the fall is to visit the popular destinations like Newport with far fewer crowds. This is another state to come to if you’re looking for lots of time by the water, and it has a slightly more upscale feel to it than Massachusetts.

Maine : Incredible hiking opportunities, and worth it just to see the foliage in Acadia National Park. You’ll find a great mix of woodsy destinations as well as towns along the coast, depending on what vibe you’re going for.

Connecticut : Another state that offers a wonderful mix of charming towns in the countryside with covered bridges, and nice coastal towns. Connecticut tends to be a more expensive state to visit, but the in fall season, the Litchfield Hills region is absolutely stunning with the most adorable towns. It also just so happens to be where Amy Sherman-Palladino got her inspiration for Stars Hollow 🙂

What Are The Best Coastal New England Towns To Visit In The Fall?

The great thing about visiting New England coastal towns in the fall is that all of them will be very quiet and peaceful. With the exception of maybe September because that’s becoming a popular time to visit now, October and November will have far fewer crowds, and you’ll be able to experience these popular destinations in a more peaceful (and let’s face it, less expensive) way. Below is a list of the best coastal New England towns and regions to visit in the fall.

  • Cape Cod in Massachusetts – This is very much a beach destination, but there are some amazingly beautiful and fun towns to explore, and long walks on the beach with a backdrop of tall sand dunes is never a bad idea.
  • Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard – The two islands off the coast of Cape Cod are popular summer vacation spots, but I also love to visit them in the fall season to enjoy cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds.
  • Newport, RI – A popular summer destination is also wonderful in the fall. It won’t be deserted in the fall season, but it’ll definitely be quieter, and you’ll have plenty of foliage views to take in while tackling all the amazing things Newport has to offer.
  • Mystic, CT – Along the Mystic River you’ll find the lovely little town of Mystic, and it offers tons of things to do. In the fall, there will be events like the annual Pirate Invasion event, and you can visit the country’s oldest steam-powered cider mill for donuts, and well, cider!
  • Bar Harbor, ME – Adjacent to Acadia National Park, you’ll find this cute little coastal town that’s filled with charm, and will have lots of opportunities to experience fall foliage, even without going into Acadia itself (but of course, I absolutely recommend you do).

Best Towns To Visit In New England In The Fall

If you’re looking for the absolute best towns for fall foliage in New England, here are my suggestions on places to stay this time of the year!

1. Stowe, VT

Stowe also makes for a wonderful day trip in Vermont, and is one of the best places to experience fall in New England.

One of the most quaint and cozy places for a getaway in New England that’s simply packed to the brim with fall foliage is Stowe in Vermont. This small little community has it all – covered bridges, mountain peaks, amazing places to stay, a cidery, breweries, farm stands and so much more.

When people ask me for the best New England fall destinations, this is always in my top 3.

2. Woodstock, VT

A very close runner-up to Stowe is the incredibly charming and picturesque town of Woodstock, also in Vermont. Much like Stowe, Woodstock will put on an amazing display of fall foliage, and the entire area feels very much like a Hallmark movie set. You’ll be considering moving there about 5 minutes after you arrive.

You’ll also find covered bridges here, the amazing Billings Farm & Museum, opportunities for local syrup and cheese tastings at Sugarbush Farms, incredible shopping and dining downtown, and scenic drives nearby for those postcard-worthy rural landscapes Vermont is known for .

Pro Tip : Stowe and Woodstock are only about an hour and 20 minutes from one another, making it easy to see both in a weekend getaway (or a day trip if you’re ambitious!).

3. Salem, MA

I mean, Salem in October really needs no introduction, right? 🙂

If you’ve never been to Salem in the fall, this is definitely something that should be at the top of your list if you’re interested in history of all kinds (spooky or not), love quaint New England towns, great food and historic homes. It’s truly one of the coolest things to do in Massachusetts in the fall .

But of course, the best reason to come here is for all the Halloween vibes you could possibly ever want, including the famous Hocus Pocus filming locations.

Even if Halloween isn’t your thing, Salem is still a great place to visit. Yes, you’ll see lots of Halloween decorations, but the fall foliage and historic homes and streets are worth at least a day trip, and it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Fall in New England.

The fascinating history of the Salem Witch Trials is enough to leave you with goosebumps, and there will also be plenty of haunted walking tours and sites to see during your visit.

Psst! I have some helpful guides including planning the perfect Salem, MA day trip , and the best time to visit Salem if you need more information 😉

4. Newburyport, MA

Newburyport is such an amazing city in Massachusetts that feels like a cozy, small town on the water. But, my favorite time of the year to visit in the fall season because the entire town has beautiful foliage displays at every turn.

Newburyport is my favorite shopping destination in all of New England, and it’s also home to some beautiful beaches on Plum Island. It kind of has it all! This is the perfect place to plan a getaway that balances a town feel with shopping and dining, but also opportunities to relax, and visit some beautiful nature areas like the beaches mentioned before, and some scenic walking trails.

Whale watch tours also depart from Newburyport, and they typically run through October.

5. Boston, MA

For the perfect city getaway, Boston in the fall is hard to beat. Between the foliage at the Public Gardens, the cobblestoned streets, and cooler weather that just begs you to throw on a blazer, it’s one of the best places see in New England in the fall.

I actually call out a few of the things to do this time of the year later in the post because they’re worthy of their own mentions, but from Boston, you can plan a whale watch, walk along the waterfront to enjoy the crisp fall air, enjoy the seasonal flavors at all the incredible restaurants and cocktail bars, and head inside the amazing museums if you happen to have a rainy day.

In New England, Boston is the best city fall getaway, for sure, and it’s my personal favorite time to visit.

6. Littleton, NH

Littleton, NH is continually ranked as one of the best Main Street destinations in the entire country, and it's a great place to plan a New England fall getaway

My absolute favorite town in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire is Littleton. I just think it’s packed with so much charm, and feels perfectly cozy, especially in the fall season.

And the best part? It’s in a great location, and easily accessible to Franconia Notch State Park, the Loon Mountain Gondola and so much more! Franconia Notch State Park is home to Flume Gorge and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway , which are some of the best things to do in fall in New England.

The town itself is so fun to explore, too. While it’s small, it actually has one of the best Main Streets in the U.S.! So shopping and dining area is particularly awesome. It also has the cozy Schilling Brewing Company, which sits right on the river, and has a lovely covered bridge for all the small-town vibes you’re looking for.

Psst! I have an entire guide on Where To Stay In The White Mountains if you’re looking for more information on each of the towns and best hotels 😉

7. Litchfield, CT

The Litchfield Hill in CT are some of the most beautiful countryside landscapes, and a drive through this region is one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

The Litchfield Hills region of Connecticut is one of the best regions to explore for fall foliage in New England, and Litchfield is one of best towns to stay in during your visit. Well, pretty much all the towns in this area make for wonderful fall getaways, but I’m particular partial to Litchfield because of it’s beautiful downtown.

There are five towns that are especially worth visiting or driving through on your fall trip, in addition to Litchfield, and they are: Kent, New Milford, Washington Depot and Woodbury. Each of them have picturesque streets in their downtown areas, village greens, and some even with gazebos to feel like you’re on the Gilmore Girls set.

While driving through this part of the Connecticut countryside to get from town to town, you’ll also find covered bridges, scenic roads, and gorgeous fall landscapes to admire.

Location Tip: The Litchfield Hills are about 1 and a half hours from Mystic, CT, so you can easily do a countryside and coastal fall trip in Connecticut by combining these two regions.

Best Things To Do In New England In The Fall

This pat of my list includes all the best attractions and things to do in New England in the fall as far as activities, sites, scenic drives and festivals you can experience. And for most suggestions, I included some location tips, where I share other areas nearby that make for awesome fall getaways to maximize your time.

8. Hike In Acadia National Park

I know, I’ve already mentioned this twice already, but one of the best things to do in New England in the fall season is to hike or take in the views in Acadia National Park. Not only will you be surrounded by fall color, you’ll also get to see some of the best coastal landscapes in the entire region, making this time of the year my personal favorite to visit.

Hiking in Acadia National Park is always a good idea, but is especially gorgeous during foliage season, and definitely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

Of course, Acadia is one of the most popular destinations in New England, and during the summers, especially, it’s pretty busy. Fall season is now becoming more popular, but I’ve found it to be less crowded than summer.

🍁 Click here to read my perfect Acadia National Park itinerary!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Acadia National Park For Fall Foliage?

Peak foliage season in Acadia National Park is typically the first week of October, but will start at the end of September. I would say a safe bet is always the first week or weekend in October for peak foliage, but if that time doesn’t work for you, the second week of October is probably better than end of September. I’ve been right at the end of September, and foliage was minimal. Keep in mind this changes year to year and it’s always hard to predict exact dates.

9. Take A Foliage Train Ride Through New Hampshire

New Hampshire has so many scenic train ride through the countryside, and this is definitely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

One of the best things to do in New England in the fall for all ages is a foliage train ride through New Hampshire. Sit back in your seat and enjoy some of the best sweeping foliage and mountain views while someone else navigates. There are different routes and train car options available, as well as different length rides to suit all budgets. There are also options with dinner services, and first-class car options.

10. Ride A Cable Car To A Mountain Summit In New Hampshire

Also in New Hampshire inside Franconia Notch State Park, one of the best mountain summit views in New England for fall foliage is at the top of Cannon Mountain. The Aerial Tramway at Mount Cannon is actually North America’s first of its kind, and allows visitors to explore the summit views with no effort at all by riding up a cable car to the top.

Once you’ve reached the top after a scenic ride, you’ll be able to take in breathtaking mountain views, which are especially amazing at fall, and on a clear day, you may even be able to spot Canada, in addition to Maine, Vermont and New York. You’ll also be able to explore the summit’s walking paths, on-site cafe and take in the views from the observation deck.

The summit at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire has such stunning fall foliage views.

Other things to do nearby: The Tramway is located in Franconia, a really lovely town nestled in the White Mountains, and you can easily make this your primary New England fall destination. You can explore the local sites, venture over to Sugar Hill, which is another cute little town, and definitely be sure to grab some amazing pancakes at Polly’s Pancake Parlor!

Scroll down to the corn maze section for a suggestion on the ultimate corn maze experience that’s also close by 🙂

11. Visit The Oldest Steam-Powered Cider Mill In The U.S.

Located in Stonington, CT, right by Mystic, you’ll find B.F. Clyde’s, which is home to the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the entire country. If you’ll be nearby, this is definitely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

At B.F. Clyde’s, you’ll be able to grab some regular and hard ciders, cider donuts, and even wine. During the weekends, they also run the press for visitors to watch the mill at work, and they recommend checking their FAQ section of their website for that season’s schedule if you’re especially interested in cider pressing demonstrations.

Other things to do nearby: Once you’ve snatched up all your treats at B.F. Clyde’s, you can then make your way to downtown Mystic, and then continue your trip to Litchfield Hills countryside for the perfect Connecticut fall adventure.

12. Experience The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

new england travel in november

One of the most fun things to do in New England in the fall is to experience an exciting pumpkin display, and the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is one of the best in the area.

Located inside the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, RI, the 2022 event displayed the largest amount of pumpkins ever with over 6,000 carved pumpkins to see! Hand-carved by pumpkin experts, each is illuminated with different colored LED lights, and are real works of art. Visitors will walk for about a quarter of a mile through a path completely illuminated by jack-o-lanterns, making this is very fun family experience.

Other things to do nearby: This event can easily be combined with Newport, RI, which is less than an hour away. Providence is a really beautiful city lots to do, and combining it with coastal Newport in the fall season will offer the best of both worlds.

13. Visit A New England Cidery

New England has so many cideries all over, so definitely be sure to sample the unique and fun flavors during your fall trip.

You can’t talk about all the best things to do in New England in the fall and not mention the ciders! Whether you’re looking to taste traditional cider, or are interested in sampling the region’s hard ciders, there are options all over. Since you can find awesome traditional cider at any apple orchard or farm stand, here’s a list of some great New England hard cideries to seek out:

Far From The Tree Cider (Salem, MA) – This is a great spot to visit because it’s already located in one of the best towns to visit in New England in the fall. I really love the ciders from here, specially their Bog variety, which is a cranberry and herb-infused cider (perfect for this season!). They have a nice tasting room at their Salem location for visitors, and you can easily find their products in local stores in the area.

Citizen Cider (Burlington, VT) – Really great ciders are served here at Citizen Cider! Located in Burlington, VT, which is an awesome little city right on Lake Champlain, you’ll find their cider pub, which serves food in addition to their ciders. It’s also easy to find their canned drinks at local stores. My favorite here is their Lake Hopper Cider.

Stowe Ciders (Stowe, VT) – Another great Vermont cidery is Stowe Ciders. There’s a really nice tasting room here that serves both food and drinks, and they often have live music on weekends, as well as food trucks. My favorite here is Tips Up, which is just sweet enough that it highlights the apple flavor, but still pretty crisp and dry.

Downeast Cider (Boston, MA) – A great choice for cider in a great city! More on Boston later in the post, but this is a a really fun place to stop on your trip, and they have a nice tasting room. They’re only open Thursdays through Sundays, and don’t serve food, but come in for a tasting in a very cool warehouse set-up. My pick here is their basic Original Blend.

14. Get Lost In A Corn Maze

The Great Vermont Corn Maze is especially fun in the fall season.

Another one of the most fun things to do in New England, especially with kids, is to visit one of the many corn mazes. There’s quite a few throughout the region during this time of the year, and below is a list of the best ones:

The Great Vermont Corn Maze (Danville, VT) – This is the end-all, be-all of corn mazes in New England, and also the largest! At the Great Vermont Corn Maze, you can actually select between two mazes, with the larger one spanning 24 acres, crossing bridges and clocking in at around 3 hours to tackle. They also have a smaller maze, which inside the larger one, and takes you through a designated path, highlighting the most scenic parts, taking 40 minutes.

Other things to do nearby : Danville is located about 40 minutes from Montpelier, an hour from Stowe, and 1.5 hours from Woodstock, making it pretty easy to squeeze into a Vermont fall trip. This corn maze is also only about 30 minutes from Franconia, NH so you can easily combine this with a trip to this area in the White Mountains.

Davis Mega Maze (Sterling, MA) – This maze in Central Massachusetts is the perfect place to spend the day with your kids. Not only do they have an 8-acre corn maze to keep you busy for at least an hour, there are also all kinds of games and children’s activities like bouncy houses, tube slides, hamster wheels and so much more. There’s also food, drinks, a petting zoo and campfires.

Other things to do nearby : This corn maze is only about an hour from both Boston and Salem, which is easy to work into either itinerary to add a little extra fall cheer into your trip.

Coppal House Farm Corn Maze (Lee, NH) – An awesome corn maze that’s close to the Maine border. They have really cool things to do here including a flashlight night walk in the corn maze, as well as a traditional corn maze and horse-drawn wagon rides. They also allow you to bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy it at one of their picnic tables, and you can purchase drinks and food at their farm stand.

Other things to do nearby : This corn maze is located about 45 minutes from Ogunquit, the best place to start a coastal Maine drive. From there, it’s about 3 hours and 45 minutes to Acadia National Park, which would make a really awesome fall road trip.

15. Visit A Cranberry Bog In Massachusetts

Cranberry harvest season coincides with fall, so one of the best things to do in New England in the fall is to visit a cranberry bog.

A really cool thing to do in New England in the fall is to visit a cranberry bog in Massachusetts. Harvest season for cranberries in this region starts in mid-September and goes through mid-November, so there’s a big window of opportunity to see them during your fall trip.

When cranberries are harvested, they’re brought to the top of the bog, which turns the water a bright, well, cranberry color, and it’s a really cool experience to witness! Below are some awesome cranberry bogs to tour during your visit.

Annie’s Crannies (Dennis, MA) – A small but mighty little bog that offers tours, and also has a farm stand that will be open during harvest season which sells cranberry-infused goods, locally-made honey, beeswax, and Annie’s Crannies gift boxes. Tours here are kind of informal, which is the only downside, so I suggest e-mailing or calling them directly to ensure they’ll be offering tours during your visit.

Location Tip: This bog is located on Cape Cod, so this is the perfect bog to visit if you’re looking to visit the Cape during your fall trip.

A.D. Makepeace Company (Wareham, MA) – This is the largest cranberry grower in the world. Yes, world . So this is definitely one to put on your list if you’re interested in learning about bogs. Tours are actually offered spring through fall, so you don’t have to visit in the fall to see this really cool destination, but it’ll definitely be extra special during harvest season.

Location Tip : This bog is located just 40 mins from Cape Cod, so this is another one that can easily be combined with the Cape.

Note : Most cranberry bog tours sell out quickly, so if this is something you want to do, I suggest you book your tour as soon as you can. It’s also important to know that cranberries don’t float on top of bogs for extended periods of time, and typically only when harvested, so it’s best to check with the tour you choose to find out what you can expect to see.

16. Experience “The Quiet Coast”

Or, as the locals call it, Second Summer. Technically, Second Summer is the time right after Labor Day through the rest of the warm season in September, which may end before fall sets in. But, you get my drift, right? 🙂

Even if you plan a trip to the coast well into fall, it’s going to be amazing. Coastal New England is honestly wonderful year-round, and this time of the year, you can experience “the quiet coast,” which is the shoulder season.

While the water will be too cold for swimming, of course, all the natural beauty of the beaches, sand dunes, and coastal towns will remain impressive. And honestly, a warm cup of clam chowder feels amazing after a brisk fall walk on the beach.

There are also some amazing and scenic walking trails along the coast that make it worth visiting in the fall, too!

17. Enjoy A Seasonal Farm To Table Dinner In Vermont

One of the best things to do in Vermont is also one of the top things to do in New England in the fall, and that’s experience the farm-to-table dining scene.

You can find farm-to-table dining all over New England, but I think Vermont is the best place to experience a special meal. Almost all the restaurants source their ingredients locally, and are housed in cozy inns, barns, or dining rooms that feel especially unique, or like home.

Many farm-to-table restaurants in Vermont will also change menus frequently to highlight seasonal flavors, so you’re sure to have plenty of options when it comes to what’s in season this time of the year, including pumpkin, butternut squash, apples and pears.

Pretty much any town in Vermont will have a farm-to-table restaurant, so my suggestion is to choose which area you want to stay in, and then go from there. Also seek out local inns, even if you’re not staying there, because their dining rooms are often open to the public, and typically have the best food.

18. Rent A Cozy Cabin In The Berkshires

The Berkshires is an amazing place for a cozy cabin in the woods fall getaway because there’s lots of wooded areas and mountain regions. Whether you’re looking for a small, romantic cabin for two, or a larger chalet for a group, there are so many perfect options in this area. Here are some suggestions:

19. Take A Spooky Trolley Tour In Boston

Boston is packed with history, and therefore, has no shortage of spooky and sordid tales to tell from the past. This trolley tour through the city at night is a great way to learn about the city’s history, but also get a few goosebumps during the Halloween season.

Your guide on this particular tour is a 17th century grave digger, and he’ll take you to Boston’s oldest burial grounds to share stories about the famous Boston Strangler and serial killer Jolly Jane. This is definitely one of the more scary things to do in New England in the fall!

🍁 Click here to check rates & availability for this Ghosts & Gravestones Night Trolley Tour in Boston!

Location tip : Since this tour takes place in Boston, you can easily add it to your itinerary. Salem is only 30-45 minutes away (depending on traffic) from Boston, which means you can combine these two destinations for a great New England fall trip.

20. Ride A Gondola To Vermont’s Highest Peak

One of the best photo spots in Stowe is at the top of Mount Mansfield after riding up on the Skyride Gondola. This is absolutely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

Another one of the best things to do in New England in the fall is to take in the views from the top of Vermont’s tallest mountain, Mount Mansfield. For those not wanting to take the challenging hike up, you can hop on the SkyRide Gondola which will take you right to the summit. Once you’re on top of Vermont and you’ve admired the incredible foliage views, you can hike on some of the trails, or have lunch at one of the two restaurants right there at the summit.

Location Tip: The SkyRide Gondola is located in Stowe, which is one of the best towns in Vermont to visit. Stowe is a great place to base yourself for a Vermont fall getaway, and is an hour and a half or less from Burlington, Woodstock and Waitsfield (all in VT) as well as Franconia, NH.

21. Find The Perfect Pumpkin At A U-Pick Patch

I know, I know, you can go pumpkin picking all over the country, BUT, hear me out 🙂

New England has some pretty amazing pumpkin patches to check out, and if you’re in the area, it’s worth stopping by if you’re able to bring your pumpkins home and support the amazing local farms.

Many pumpkin patches turn their farms into festive fall destinations, and will offer fall baked goods, cider, tractor rides and more.

Here are some awesome pumpkin patches to check out in New England:

  • Fletcher Farm in Southampton, MA
  • Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme, CT
  • Kingdom Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch in Sutton, VT
  • Lavoies Farm in Hollis, NH
  • Dame Farm and Orchards in Johnston, RI

22. In Fact, Hit Up All The Farm Stands For Fall Goodies, Too!

Farm stands are open most of the year in this region, but man, are they extra special in the fall! Shelves are stocked with the flavors of the season and local products like maple syrups, cheeses, jams and spreads, baked goods, seasonal fruits and apples, baked goods and more.

And, if you’re not feeling like picking your pumpkin from the field, most of them are stocked with already-picked pumpkins for you to buy.

Some of my favorite farm stands and farm markets to visit in the fall season are:

  • Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury, MA
  • Wilson Farm in Lexington, MA
  • Harlow Farm Stand in Westminster, VT
  • The Farmer’s Daughter in South Kingstown, RI

23. Walk The Cobblestone Streets Of Beacon Hill In Boston

Boston is absolutely beautiful in the fall season, and one of the best things to do in New England in the fall is to explore the city's Beacon Hill neighborhood. This is the now famous Acorn Street.

I’ve already touched on a scary tour you can take in Boston, but a more tame activity in the city that allows you to appreciate the charm and beautiful foliage is just to wander the streets in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

This is my favorite place in all of Boston, and while there’s a lot of residential buildings and walk-ups here, it also has some lovely boutiques and restaurants. Many of the postcard-worthy snapshots of Boston you’ve seen are probably taken here, including the now Instagram-famous Acorn Street.

This neighborhood is gorgeous year-round, but there’s something especially nice about it when the cobblestone streets are covered in falling leaves.

Expert Tip: Before you begin your stroll through Beacon Hill, stop at Tatte Bakery at their Charles Street location in the same neighborhood for a warm, fall beverage and an apple pastry. Not only are the interiors of each location gorgeous, they have amazing food, drinks and treats. Their grilled cheese is also perfect for this time of the year.

24. Experience Fall Foliage At The Boston Public Gardens

In addition to a relaxing stroll around the charming streets of Beacon Hill, you’ll definitely need to visit the Public Gardens in Boston for all the beautiful fall foliage. In fact, this is the best spot in the city for fall color, in my humble opinion 🙂

There are tons of gorgeous photo opportunities here too, including the blue footbridge (which makes a nice contrast to the warm tones of the foliage), as well as city scapes with all the surrounding fall colors.

25. Have A Maple Creemee

The maple creemee is a Vermont staple, but it’s also known all over the New England region. While they’re served year-round, fall is a wonderful time to grab one, since maple pairs so perfectly with the season, don’t you think?

Not sure what a maple creemee is? No worries, it’s specific to this region. It’s basically a very high quality soft serve ice cream flavored with local maple syrup. And it’s delicious .

Here are some awesome places to grab a maple creemee during your New England fall getaway:

  • Canteen Creemee Company in Waitsfield, VT (my personal fav!)
  • The Country Creemee in Turners Falls, MA
  • Woodstock Scoops in Woodstock, VT
  • Mac’s Maple in Plainfield, NH

26. And DEFINITELY Sample The Fall Ice Creams All Over!

But don’t just stop at the maple creemee on your trip! Homemade ice cream places all over New England are open throughout the fall season, and serving up special release fall flavors. Here are some awesome places to check out:

  • Honeycone in Chester, CT
  • Harbor Creamery in Newburyport, MA
  • Beech Hill Farm & Ice Cream Barn in Hopkinton, NH
  • Melt Ice Cream in Salem, MA
  • Tricycle Ice Cream in Providence, RI

27. Hike The Artist Bluff Trail

The Artist Bluff trail near Franconia, NH is one of the best hikes to take in New England in the fall.

One of the best hikes for fall foliage in New England is the Artist’s Bluff trail in Franconia, NH. The trail is fairly easy for the payoff, and you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of Echo Lake, backdropped by the White Mountains. Add in the stunning fall color, and it’s an even better experience.

This trail is a 1.5 mile loop, and usually takes about an hour, maybe an hour and a half at a leisurely pace. For those who don’t hike often, this may be more on the moderate side, as there are some sections with a steeper climb. But generally speaking, all skill levels will be able to do this hike.

28. Take On The Frankenstein Trestle Hike

While the Artist Bluff Trail in the White Mountains is one of the most popular, one that’s equally as beautiful, but a bit more thrilling, is the Frankenstein Trestle Hike. Located in Crawford Notch State Park , this trail takes you to the railroad tracks of the North Conway Scenic Railroad, and showcases some pretty epic views of the mountains.

And if you time your visit just right for peak foliage, the fall color on this trail will be simply jaw-dropping.

29. Enjoy The Views From Table Rock

Lastly for fall hikes in New Hampshire, Table Rock should be on your list. Located in Dixville Notch State Park, this hike passes by a beautiful waterfall, and ends with incredible views of the surrounding mountain vistas.

This is another hike where if you visit at peak fall foliage, the autumnal color will be insane . This is definitely once of the best hikes in New England for foliage views.

30. Go Seasonal Beer Tasting In Portland

Portland, Maine has an amazing brewery scene, and tasting all the seasonal beer flavors during your trip is one of the best things to do in New England in the fall.

Portland is an awesome city to dive into when it comes to their culinary scene, but they also have lots of really great breweries.

So many, in fact, you could easily spend a weekend visiting a few breweries a day and probably not see them all. As of 2022, there are about 16 in the city to choose from! All of them will have seasonal specials for the fall, so if you’re into tasting locally-made beer during your travels, this is one of the best things to do in New England in the fall. Below is a list of my favorite breweries in Portland, Maine.

  • Bissel Brothers (my personal favorite in the entire city)
  • Maine Beer Company
  • Lone Pine Brewing
  • Belleflower

31. Pick Apples At The Oldest Continually-Operated Orchard In The U.S.

Apple picking in this area is plentiful and easy to find in pretty much any town.

Apple picking is a popular fall activity in a lot of places throughout the U.S., but here in New England, you can pick apples at the oldest continually-operate orchard in the entire country. Applecrest Farm is also the oldest and largest orchard in New Hampshire. Here, you’ll be able to pick fresh apples, grab some freshly-pressed cider and warm cider donuts. They also have a farm stand where you can buy locally-made jams and honey, cheeses and maple syrup.

On weekends in September and October, the farm celebrates with Harvest Festival, where they have a corn maze, sunflower trail, live music, lawn games and tons more.

32. Tour The Covered Bridges

Seeing the covered bridges is one of the most fun things to do in Vermont, and most definitely one of the best ways to enjoy fall foliage in New England.

Some of the most iconic New England landmarks are the historic covered bridges, and fall is my personal favorite time to take a covered bridges driving tour. While seeing the covered bridges is a fun thing to do year-round, fall is especially magical because the bridges will be backdropped in all the gorgeous fall color, which just complements them perfectly.

If you’re looking to do a strictly covered bridges tour, I would highly suggest sticking to Vermont – it has the most covered bridges of all the New England states (about 100!), and it makes it so easy to see as many as possible in any given amount of time. Another great state to see covered bridges is New Hampshire, and lastly, the Litchfield Hills region in Connecticut is also a nice option.

Here are some of my guides on covered bridges in New England:

  • The Perfect Vermont Covered Bridges Road Trip itinerary
  • The Best Covered Bridges In New Hampshire To Visit

33. Take A Spooky Ghost Tour

Because New England has roots dating back to 1620 when the Mayflower docked in Massachusetts, it has plenty of eerie legends, stories of ghost sightings, and all kinds of history with a very sordid past. One of the best things to do in New England in the fall season is to take a ghost tour. Not sure where to start looking for one? I’ve got you covered! Click the links below to check out my round-ups of all the best New England ghost tours and haunted houses!

34. Savor A Pumpkin Whoopie Pie

New England, and more specifically, Maine, is known for the delicious little baked good, the whoopie pie. The traditional flavorings of this treat usually feature a chocolate cake with a vanilla filling, but during the fall season, lots of bakeries start to whip up the best pumpkin versions of these.

During your visit to New England, I suggest hunting down whoopie pies to find your favorite, but also grabbing the pumpkin version to put you in the fall spirit.

🍁 Click here to read my post on the best whoopie pies in Maine!

35. Find Your Favorite Cider Donuts

New England is also known for its cider donuts, and you’ll find cider donuts everywhere . And I can’t recommend trying them everywhere you go enough 😉

To help you out (because that’s what I’m here for, after all!), these are some of the best places for incredible cider donuts in New England:

  • Cider Belly in Meredith, NH (widely-regarded as the best in the region!)
  • Russell Orchards in Ipswich, MA
  • Apple Land Orchard in Greenville, RI

36. Make Your Own Fall Candle At Rockport Candle Company

Rockport Candle Company is one of my favorite shops in all of New England, and while many shops in Rockport, MA close down in the off-season, this cute little place remains open. And the best part? They offer workshops where you can make your own candle!

It’s a safe bet that you probably enjoy a good fall candle, right? 🙂 Well, why not make your own? Not only is Rockport one of the most charming coastal towns in New England, having your own custom candle to enjoy throughout the fall season is just a wonderful souvenir to bring home with you.

37. Plan An Epic New England Fall Foliage Road Trip

I honestly don’t think there’s a better place in the entire U.S. for a fall foliage road trip, and one of the best way to enjoy fall in New England is with an epic foliage road trip!

The best areas for fall foliage are in New Hampshire and Vermont, and then from there, you can customize it based on your preferences. The best way to begin planning is to start in the north regions in New Hampshire, and then work your way down, since foliage peaks in the north sooner.

A great itinerary to plan is to start in the White Mountains region, and then cut over to the Woodstock & Stowe, VT regions, and then cut back over to southern New Hampshire, and end in Salem and Boston in Massachusetts.

38. Experience The Head Of The Charles Regatta

Every October, Cambridge hosts the largest rowing competition – the Head of the Charles Regatta. And if you happen to be in the Boston area around this time, this is an exciting experience to have!

The best rowers in the country participate in this iconic New England event, and it’s also the perfect excuse to explore more of Cambridge, which is home to Harvard University (and also beautiful in the fall season).

39. Ride The Cog Up Mount Washington

While summer is a great season to ride up to New England’s highest peak, there’s something extra special about doing it in the fall for foliage color, right?

The Cog is the world’s first mountain railway, and as mentioned, it takes you to the summit of Mount Washington, New England’s highest peak. Fall trips to the top run through mid-October, as after that, weather is too risky to go to the summit.

From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views that make you feel like you’re on top of the world, and of course, the fall foliage can’t be beat!

40. Enjoy The Last Of The Farmer’s Markets

New England has a fantastic rural farming culture, and because of that, there are some pretty epic farmer’s markets around the region. Many of them run through mid-October, and feature seasonal offerings like fall produce, baked goods, local cheeses and tons more. Now is the time to stock up before they end for the season!

Here are some great farmer’s markets that continue through parts of October:

  • Plymouth, MA Farmer’s Market
  • Tiverton, RI Farmer’s Market
  • Vermont Farmer’s Market in Rutland
  • Fairfield Farmers Market in CT
  • Littleton Farmer’s Market in NH
  • Portland Farmer’s Market in Maine

41. Hike Camel’s Hump In Vermont

For a thrilling and challenging hike with incredible payoff, Camel’s Hump is the perfect option in Vermont. This trail is wonderful in the summer, but even better in the fall because of the stunning foliage color displays.

While you can do the 6-mile out and back trail, you can also choose to do the slightly shorter and easier Monroe Trail, which cute the time by about half. The Monroe Trail is still incredibly scenic, but for the ultimate hike for a good workout, you’ll want to do the full trail!

42. Cozy Up At A Historic Inn

There’s no shortage of cozy places to stay in New England, especially in the fall season, and historic inns are one of the best options. Every state in the region will have so many options to choose from, and they’ll feature cozy, New England decor, fireplaces, and homey vibes that will have you rethinking going back home.

Here are few of the coziest historic inns to book for a fall getaway:

  • Four Chimneys in Vermont
  • Christmas Farm Inn & Spa in New Hampshire’s White Mountains
  • Compass Rose Inn in Newburyport, MA
  • The Litchfield Inn in Connecticut

Best New England Fall Festivals

New England takes its fall festivals pretty seriously, and they’re a great way to bring the local communities together, as well as welcome visitors to the area. They’re definitely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall, and if one happens to coincide with your trip, it’ll be worth it to swing by.

There are so many other fall festivals around New England beyond the ones listed below, so once you finalize your plans, check out your destination and see what kinds of festivals or events they have in the fall season.

43. The Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta (ME)

The Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta takes place every Columbus Day weekend in October in Damariscotta, Maine, and was even named the best fall festival in Maine by Travel & Leisure . Visitors can enjoy strolling through town to see Atlantic Giant pumpkins painted and decorated by local community members. But the best part? The Pumpkin Regatta! Enormous pumpkins are carved into floating rafts for a race across the river. It’ll truly feel like a scene from a Hallmark movie.

Other exciting events include a parade and a pumpkin derby, where pumpkins are converted into vehicles for a friendly competition.

Location Tip : Damariscotta is in a great location, and you can easily work this event into a fall Maine road trip itinerary. You’ll be about 20-30 minutes from Boothbay Harbor, 40 minutes from Camden and about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Acadia National Park.

44. The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival

The New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival is held each year on the last weekend of October in downtown Laconia, and has broken the Guinness record for highest number of lit jack-o-lanterns, which is definitely worth stopping by to see! On top of that, you’ll also find tons of fair food vendors, corn hole tournaments, inflatable houses for kids, craft and artisan vendors and so much more.

Location Tip : Laconia is about 1-1.5 hours from most places in the White Mountains, making this a really fun day trip if you choose to stay in this region for your fall New England trip. Laconia is a really beautiful and historic down with an awesome downtown (including cute shops and eateries), and is also waterfront. It’s worth making the trek down for the event if you’re staying in the White Mountains region.

45. Oktoberfest at Mount Snow (VT)

The annual Oktoberfest at Mount Snow celebration is a great option in the southern Vermont region, and typically takes place the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. Here, you’ll find lots of German beer and food vendors, as well as yodeling contests and keg tosses. This event is more geared toward adults, and while children are allowed, I would advise against bringing very young children, as they may be bored. For adults who love beer, German food and the fall season, this is a great festival!

Location Tip : Mount Snow is located in Dover, VT, which is very close to Manchester, and about 30 minutes from Bennington. If you planned to drive Route 100 in Vermont for your New England fall trip (more on that later this this post!), you could definitely swing by Oktoberfest in Dover, and then begin your road trip from there.

46. Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival (ME)

The Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival takes place in Freeport, ME at the flagship L.L. Bean store campus. This is an awesome event for families with children, and typically takes place the weekend before Halloween each year. During the event, you’ll find over 10,000 lit jack-o-lanterns on display, live music, a costume parade and lots of events for children like movie night.

Location Tip : Freeport is located in southern Maine, about 20 minutes north of Portland, making this very easy to attend if you happen to stay in Portland for your getaway. Freeport is a cute little town with a great mix of commercial and independent shops and feels very quaint and charming. The L.L. Bean campus is also really fun to visit, and you can easily start a coastal Maine road trip from this area.

47. Fall for Ogunquit/OgunquitFest (ME)

The little seaside town of Ogunquit in Maine has not one, but two fall-themed events to attend, both of which take place the same weekend, making it worth your time to visit. Fall for Ogunquit and OgunquitFest typically happen the weekend before Halloween each year. At Fall For Ogunquit, you’ll find whoopie pie eating contests, a costume parade, Dogtoberfest, which is a costume parade for our furry, four-legged friends, children’s activities and an antique car show.

During OgunquitFest, you’ll find a huge craft fair featuring local artisans, with lots of opportunity to shop small and local.

Location Tip: Ogunquit is only about an hour south of Portland, and also very close to Kennebunkport, allowing you to easily explore the region if you choose to stay in Portland for your fall trip.

48. Berkshire Botanical Garden Harvest Festival (MA)

The Berkshire Botanical Garden Harvest Festival is a great option if you choose a cozy cabin getaway in The Berkshires for your New England fall trip. This festival usually takes place on Columbus Day weekend each year, and since the event is held at the Botanical Gardens, the scenery is already spectacular.

During the events, you’ll find lots of local food and beverage vendors that specialize in serving seasonal flavors, crafts vendors, a farmer’s market, pony rides and event a plant sale to help you kick your porch goals up a notch for the season.

49. The Stamford Museum and Nature Center Harvest Festival Weekend (CT)

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center Harvest Festival takes place right after Halloween each year, and is located in Stamford, CT. The museum and nature center on a regular day are already fun to visit, but mix in a fall festival, and it’s even better. You’ll find events like apple cider demonstrations, apple sling shots, live animals, crafts, face painting for the kids and lots more.

Proceeds from this event help to fund the museum’s educational efforts throughout the year.

Location Tip : This festival is just over an hour from the Litchfield Hills region, making it easy to swing by during your fall trip.

50. Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Fest (RI)

In mid-October every year, Newport, RI hosts the amazing Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Fest. While this isn’t your traditional fall fest, it has everything you could possibly want in a New England festival. In fact, it was named one of the 10 Fabulous Fall Festivals on the Coast by Coastal Living Magazine .

During the event, you’ll find incredible seafood vendors, chowders, live music, kettle corn, cocktails, and scenic seating along the wharf.

Best New England Fall Road Trips & Scenic Drives

51. currier & ives scenic byway (nh).

The Currier & Ives Scenic Byway takes you on a beautiful route in southern New Hampshire that’ll be dripping with fall color at peak foliage time. This drive is about 30 miles long, making it easy to do as a day trip, and offers plenty of stops to make along the way.

This road trip will start in downtown Henniker, NH, and take you to Salisbury, with a quick detour to Warner on the way. Click here for a map of the route to help you plan .

Along this route, you’ll be able to visit the quaint and historic towns of Henniker, Hopkinton, Warner, Webster and Salisbury. During the drive, you’ll definitely want to stop in each town to explore the local shops, sites and eateries. Also be sure to stop at the Henniker covered bridge, and if you’re up for a scenic walk, hit the trails at Rollins State Park.

52. Vermont Road Trip Along Route 100

At 216 miles, Route 100 is definitely a great Vermont road trip option for those looking to see some of the more scenic parts of the state, especially in the fall season. Starting in Stamford, VT and ending in Newport, VT, this route takes you pretty much straight through the middle of the state to the Canadian border, and allows you to veer off-course to explore more of the eastern and western towns. Of course, you can easily stick to Route 100 and have an absolutely incredible drive. There’s a reason it’s one of the best in New England!

Vermont's Route 100 is one of the best fall road trips you can take in New England.

If you’re short on time, you could possibly make Route 100 a day trip through Vermont, but at minimum, I would suggest 1-2 nights to really enjoy all the sites and stops. If you have longer, 5-7 days be great, allowing you to take some side excursions to towns like Woodstock and the city of Burlington.

Some of the best stops to make along the way on Route 100 are :

  • The Vermont Country Store in Weston
  • Green Mountain Sugar House in Ludlow
  • Stowe (definitely spend some time in this quintessential Vermont town!)
  • Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury
  • Cold Hollow Cider Mill (featured earlier on this list!)

🍁 Click here to read about the best stops to make when driving from Boston to Stowe, VT!

53. The Kancamagus Highway Scenic Drive (NH)

At only 34 miles long, this scenic drive through the White Mountain region of New Hampshire offers a lot of payoff for a short distance. You’ll see spectacular fall foliage along the entire route, which begins in Conway, and ends in Lincoln. Along the way, you’ll be able to stop at Albany Covered Bridge, several scenic viewpoints including Pemigewasset Overlook, Hancock Overlook and CL Graham Wangan Overlook, as well as Sabbaday Falls and Upper Lady’s Bath. There’s plenty more to stop and see on the drive, but these are the highlights.

The Kancamagus Highway is one of the best scenic drives for fall foliage in New Hampshire.

For this scenic drive, you’ll want to plan at least 3 hours to allow time to get out and enjoy the sites, and even more if you want to hike any of the trails along the route.

54. The Scenic FarmCoast Drive (RI & MA)

This short little drive is perfect for those looking for a day trip around the coast, and also through some of Massachusetts for some great fall color. This route is very under-rated, and absolutely wonderful in the fall season. FarmCoast got its name because of the Rhode Island coastal views with a backdrop of beautiful rural farmland, offering the best of both worlds.

This drive starts in Tiverton (be sure to stop by Tiverton Corners for some fun shops!), and ends in the Dartmouth area of Massachusetts, and you’ll definitely want to take a detour to Westport, MA on your way to Dartmouth. Tiverton to Dartmouth only takes about 30 minutes without stops, so you’ll definitely have time! To get to Westport, you’ll turn left onto Route 88 (if you’re coming from RI), and take that to Westport. Then reverse course back to Route 177 and continue to Dartmouth.

55. The Northwestern Connecticut & Mount Tom State Park Drive

Earlier in this post, I mentioned why the Litchfield Hills region of Connecticut was absolutely one of the best things to do in New England in the fall, and this scenic drive/road trip around the area is a great way to see it all and experience those perfect New England countryside landscapes and covered bridges. You’ll pass through the picturesque towns of Litchfield, Kent, New Milford and also visit Mount Tom State Park for beautiful fall foliage views.

This route isn’t super straight forward and requires a little bit of backtracking to visit all the destinations, but it’s definitely worth it. You can start in either New Milford or Kent, then work your way to whichever of these two towns you didn’t come from before driving to Mount Tom State Park, where you can take scenic walks and hikes. After the park, you’ll make your way to Litchfield, your final destination.

What Is The Best Time To Visit New England In The Fall?

Between late-September and mid-October is the best time to catch fall foliage at its peak. This will also depend on the region, as places in the White Mountains and northern Vermont will start to turn earlier than the more southern or coastal destinations. It’s best to first pick which destinations you want to visit, and then plan accordingly. But as a safe bet, the first week of October is generally great for most places in New England for peak foliage.

However, I think that any time in October is also wonderful. While mid to late October will be the end of peak foliage in most places, the leaf-covered streets and walkways, as well as most of the grounds, will still be covered in colorful foliage. Trees may be bare, but I’ve also seen some southern and coastal towns with foliage left on them in early November! So even if you think you’ll miss peak foliage, you’ll still have an an amazingly scenic fall trip.

What Is The Best Way To See New England In The Fall?

The absolute best way to see New England in the fall is by car. If you’re flying into the area, you’ll want to rent a car at the airport to get around. If you only plan to stay in Boston or Portland, ME, then you can get away without a car, but as you’ll see from this list, most of the best things to do in New England in the fall are in the smaller, quaint towns and countryside, and unfortunately, there’s no good public transportation methods to get you there.

How To See New England In The Fall Without A Car

If having a car on your fall New England trip isn’t an option, your best bet is to stay in Boston, and explore the city for a few days, and then also consider taking the train to Portland, Maine, where public transit can easily get you around. Both of these cities are easy to navigate without a car, and provide lots of opportunities to experience fall weather, scenery and foliage.

Between the two cities, I would say Boston is a better option for a fall trip without a car because you can also combine it with a trip to Salem by taking the ferry over. You could either spend a day in Salem, or even a few days as you don’t really need a car in Salem, either, if you stick to the downtown area. There’s also Uber available in Salem to get you around if needed.

I-95 in Connecticut will be closed for days after fiery crash damages bridge, governor says

HARTFORD, Conn. — The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway and causing major traffic jams. While Lamont said there were no serious injuries in the 5:30 a.m. accident in Norwalk, the crash caused damage to the bridge above it.

“The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down and that demolition is going to start first thing tomorrow morning,” Lamont said at a briefing Thursday evening in Hartford.

He said the hope is to reopen the interstate by Monday morning.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said his city’s schools will be closed on Friday. It’s unclear whether they’ll reopen Monday. He urged local employers to consider allowing employees to work from home on Friday, if possible, or use the MetroNorth commuter rail. Additional trains are being added to the rail line, officials said.

While the bridge was less than 10 years old, “the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

The tanker had been carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 liters) when it crashed beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge, officials said. The overpass did not appear in danger of collapsing, said Scott Hill, chief engineer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

new england travel in november

Eucalitto said it’s unsafe to allow any traffic to pass underneath the bridge in either direction, so the entire bridge, which has beams that cross both spans of highway, has to be removed.

Large equipment was being brought to Connecticut Thursday evening to complete the demolition, which is expected to begin around 3 a.m. on Friday. Lamont said the work could take 24 hours or longer to complete. After that, the roadway may need to be repaved before it can reopen.

It will likely take about a year to replace the bridge, a major artery for the city of more than 91,000 people. Lamont said he is hoping to receive federal reimbursement to cover the cost.

“I’m glad everyone is OK,” Lisa Brinton, who lives south of I-95, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “My concern is the after effect. Norwalk is divided in half by 95 and I drive over Fairfield Avenue bridge everyday.”

The cause of the crash remains under police investigation and no charges have been filed.

About 160,000 vehicles travel that portion of I-95 in both directions daily, Eucalitto said.

Traffic was backed up for dozens of miles during the morning rush hour, and lengthy delays remained in the area into Thursday evening and were expected through the weekend. Slow-moving detours were set up, taking traffic off the highway and around the accident scene. The crash left other highways and secondary roads in gridlock. The major alternate route in the area, the Merritt Parkway, cannot be used by trucks because the underpasses on that highway are too low.

Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and trucking companies who use the section of I-95 were notified to find alternative routes and means of travel, he said. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg also was notified.

“I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can,” Lamont said during an earlier briefing in Hartford. “The traffic jams are horrendous.”

Crews offloaded about 4,000 gallons (about 15,142 liters) of gasoline that was unburnt and remained on the tanker. Utility crews were also working to replace downed wires.

Environmental crews worked to clean up gasoline and firefighting foam. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the runoff was contained to a retention pond and did not make it into the Norwalk River or the city’s harbor.

The accident was reminiscent of  last year’s  deadly accident in Philadelphia along I-95 when a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline lost control and caught fire, destroying a section of the highway.

The crash also came just over a year after a similar wreck on I-95 in Connecticut that forced the closure of the highway.

In April 2023, another fuel truck caught fire after colliding with a stopped car on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between New London and Groton. The fuel truck driver was killed. The crash shut down the southbound side of the bridge for hours, while the northbound side was closed briefly.  The driver of the car  was recently charged with negligent homicide.

‘Charming’ seaside town crowned best beach destination in England and Wales

Tynemouth Longsands

If you don’t want to stray too far from home this Bank Holiday weekend, you don’t have to sacrifice a beach break.

Tynemouth, near Newcastle upon Tyne, is officially the best coastal destination in England and Wales, so it’s worth considering for a last-minute staycation.

The North East spot came top in research by Millets analysing Google reviews, water quality ratings, ocean temperatures, beach facilities, accessibility and parking costs.

With an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5 from visitors and 8.49 out of 10 from judges, Tynemouth’s Longsands Beach was praised for having wheelchair ramps and deck chair hire, as well as its ‘long stretches of golden sand’ and ‘powerful waves making it ideal for surfing.’

We may not be able to guarantee sun here in Blighty, but with thunderstorms battering Europe over the next week, the UK seaside might not look too different to France or Spain.

And Tynemouth has a lot to offer right on our doorstep, with Visit North Tyneside saying: ‘It is steeped in history, has some fabulous attractions, great shopping and a vibrant nightlife. This charming village has something to offer everyone.’

Many tourists agree too, including FindPenguins reviewer Travelling About who wrote, ‘With its 2,000-year history and beautiful views it is the perfect location for a family fun day out.’

Another commenter, Andrew’s Travels, who spent the day in Tynemouth, added: ‘This area is definitely worth a second visit to explore it more thoroughly.’

Alongside Longsands there’s King Edward’s Bay and Cullercoats Bay, all of which are sandy, semi-secluded and popular with holidaymakers . But that’s not all it has to offer.

Things to do in Tynemouth

If you’re bored of the beach (and of course sampling the local fish and chips), Tynemouth Castle and Priory is a must-do. The English Heritage property dating back centuries dominates the region’s skyline, and you can learn more about its history through ‘Life in the Stronghold’ exhibition or take in the views of the North Sea from its walls.

On rainy days, Tynemouth Aquarium offers something to keep the little ones entertained, while the Volunteer Life Brigade Museum – which is free to visit – gives a unique glimpse into local maritime history.

Don’t forget to check out the famous Tynemouth Market on Saturdays and Sundays, where you’ll find everything from vintage clothing to street food. The independent boutiques of Green Ginger Arcade are also ideal if you’re looking for something quirky.

And when it’s time to refuel, Fish Quay, Front Street or Percy Park Road all have plenty of traditional pubs, cafes and bistros to choose from.

How to get to Tynemouth

There are no mainline trains to Tynemouth and the nearest railway station is Newcastle Central about 10 miles away.

However, if you head to Newcastle on one of the frequent trains from London King’s Cross and the Midlands via York, Edinburgh, and Carlisle, you can get the Metro to Tynemouth via the Yellow Line.
