No one helps

What is going to take to help when one of you riders has a problem, I’m new to buying anything I was always scare, and sure enough I bought a pass of 30 days, because I got a one month job in NYC, so to make it worth it saving money I bought a pass, well apparently I bought the wrong pass, I try using it for the first time on Tuesday of this week because that was when the job start it, I got an Intrastate instead of a interstate, so the driver made me aware of it I had no idea, that same day I went to custumer service in port authority Ny, and they gave me a number to call and no one help they were supposed to call me back and no one did I sent 2 messages through the app and nothing, so now I’m here writing this message to plead for someone to help me or guide of what to do, my savings are not savings any more because I’m paying out of my pocket and I can’t use the up, I need a refund to buy the right pass

Buy paper tix until this app is fixed

App was fine before in early summer when I used it, as of Aug 25th 2023 is very glitchy, wouldn’t process my (easy) ticket I normally get and a friend traveling with me ended up accidentally buying 6 (!) of the same tickets because the app kept telling them the purchase didn’t go through and to try again. They did actually go through, even after refreshing things the app didn’t send a pop up notice the purchase was successful, and NJ Transit didn’t send a receipt promptly via email saying so. Being on a train platform or on a train running into ticket/app problems creates high stress and headaches for conductors who end up hearing valid excuses why you can’t show your ticket, or that you were just overcharged trying to buy 1 but ended up with 6. Apparently NJ Transit doesn’t like giving refunds (what a scam) so my friends forced to try to use the extra tix to a location she doesn’t often go. NJ has a millions of tech IT people who can capably fix app bugs I’m sure.. NJ Transit management needs to hire better tech developers to keep these problems from happening-do more test runs before releasing a new update. Amateurs should not be running an app that a half million people or so need for train commuting. Please stay on top of tech issues and fix asap! Or just go back to paper tickets til app bugs are sorted out.

New version looks nice but WONKY and nonsensical.

The new version of the app looks nice and modern. But it’s very annoying that my monthly pass pops up instantly when clicking “my tickets” because i actually have other tickets! Also it displays horizontally, which is annoying because I never asked it to rotate. If the ticket wants to display horizontally to distinguish a monthly from a single use, fine, but the functions should still remain at the bottom because I’m not holding my phone sideways, I’m holding it vertically. It’s very frustrating when trying to close the monthly pass to continue using the app or display another ticket. Also, the new version’s “schedule” feature got rid of displaying if a route has transfers on the results screen. I almost stayed on a train that had a transfer to get to where I was going because you have to CLICK the route to see wether or not you need to transfer to a different line or not. The old version said wether or not a route had transfers or not up front. It’s very misleading because I want to avoid trains with transfers if I can, and people who are new to NJ transit will for sure stay on a train instead of transfer if they don’t click to expand the route info because they’re under the impression there are no transfers if It doesn’t say so up front. Please bring that feature back. Everything else is fine I guess.

NJ Transit will issue refunds for some tickets bought before June 1

NJ Transit will offer refunds on some tickets purchased before June 1 in response to criticism of the agency’s new policy that applies 30-day expiration dates to tickets.

The refund policy, announced Wednesday, will apply to all one-way bus, train, and light rail tickets bought before June 1, and will also apply to 10-trip train tickets purchased then.

The reversal comes after lawmakers and commuters blasted the rail agency for its new expiration date policy, part of a package  approved in April  that included fare hikes of up to 15% starting July 1 — and a 3% increase each year after. Adding expiration dates to tickets will provide a revenue boost of tens of millions annually, the agency says.

The agency said the overwhelming majority of customers typically do not purchase more than three months of tickets in advance, but the refund option will help people who purchased tickets before the new expiration date policy was announced.

Ticket holders seeking refunds will be able to do so starting Aug. 1 and through Dec. 31.

Previously, people could buy as many transit tickets as they wanted with no worry they’d expire. Under the proposal approved by NJ Transit in April, all one-way tickets purchased after July 1 will only be valid for 30 days.

Tickets purchased in June won’t be eligible for a refund, and all one-way tickets purchased before July 1 will expire on July 31, regardless of purchase date.

“Ticket expiration policies are consistent with transit industry best practices across the country,” NJ Transit said in a statement.

The cash-strapped transit agency says that with the new fare hikes, it will close the roughly  $100 million budget gap it faced for the upcoming fiscal year . But another shortfall of nearly $800 million is expected in the budget year beginning in July 2025, even considering the revenue from fare hikes.

Senate President Nicholas Scutari (D-Union) last week threatened to introduce legislation to reverse NJ Transit’s expiration date policy if the agency didn’t honor the full value of tickets purchased before the agency announced the change. On Wednesday, Scutari said he welcomes the move by the agency to refund riders.

“NJ Transit has a responsibility to respect the consumer rights of its riders by treating them fairly. If they want to sell tickets with expiration dates, it should be on the tickets or the purchasers should be informed at the time of sale. That is a reasonable expectation for any customer, including riders who rely on the services of a public transit agency,” he said.

How to request a refund

Refunds are expected to take about three to four weeks, and will go much faster for customers who kept their receipts, the agency said in its announcement.

All mobile app tickets will be automatically converted to a full-value credit if unused by August 1.

People who bought online should print out their tickets before June 1. Instructions on how to seek a refund are included on printed tickets.

Customers with paper tickets must visit a customer service office near them with their receipts. If you don’t have receipts, you’ll be asked to provide the last four digits of the credit card used to purchase the tickets.

Customer service offices are located in Hoboken Terminal, Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, Trenton Transit Center, New York Penn Station, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Refund! NJ Transit riders who bought unused tickets set to expire can now get money back

Bob Gilson let out a relieved "wow" after hearing that NJ Transit will now offer refunds to customers who bought one-way or 10-trip rail tickets that were on pace to expire July 31 after the agency announced a new expiration policy earlier this year.

The refund decision comes after backlash from customers who said they were not aware until recently that tickets purchased before July 1 were going to be retroactively subject to a July 31 expiration date.

A fare hike of 15% and the new 30-day expiration policy go into effect July 1. They were approved by NJ Transit's board April 10 .

Gilson was poised to lose hundreds of dollars on paper and digital bus and train tickets he has accrued over the last five or six years, which he couldn't possibly have used before the new July 31 expiration because his commute as a recruiter had him buying tickets for different zones and stops depending on the client he was meeting.

Before the refund policy was announced Wednesday, the Washington Township resident had filed complaints with NJ Transit and the Federal Trade Commission, and he was in talks with other customers about building a class-action lawsuit against the agency.

"The fact that they’re giving refunds is outstanding," Gilson said. "It’s a very good solution. I think it’s very fair."

Under the new refund policy, customers can seek reimbursement between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31 for unused tickets purchased before June 1.

"NJ Transit continues to strongly urge customers to avoid purchasing any additional one-way tickets that they cannot use by July 31, 2024," the agency said in a statement Wednesday announcing the new policy.

"While the overwhelming majority of customers do not typically purchase more than three months’ worth of one-way tickets in advance, the refund policy will help assist those customers who might be at risk of having tickets expire before they can be used by July 31 st ," it said.

How to seek reimbursement

Here's how to seek reimbursement, along with a few other tips to keep in mind. For more information, visit NJ Transit's website .

• Refunds will be processed only from Aug. 1 through Dec. 31.
• Refund processing could take three to four weeks.
• Tickets purchased on or after June 1 will expire July 31.
• Refunds for paper tickets:   Customers should bring unused paper tickets purchased before June 1, 2024, to a customer service office. They will need to provide contact information and should have their receipts with them to expedite the refund process. Customers who don’t have their receipts will be asked to provide contact information and the last four digits of the credit card used for the purchase to have the money refunded to the credit card. Refunds will take longer to process for those customers who have no receipts or other transaction information.
• Refunds for web tickets: Customers should print out unused one-way tickets bought on the web before June 1, 2024, and follow the above instructions for printed tickets.
• Refunds for Mobile App tickets:  All unused Mobile App tickets purchased before June 1, 2024, that remain unused on Aug. 1, 2024, will be automatically converted to a credit in the amount of the unused one-way tickets in the customer’s electronic wallet in the Mobile App. Customers do not need to take any action to receive this credit.

• Hoboken Terminal : Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Newark Penn Station : Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• New York Penn Station : Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• Port Authority Bus Terminal : Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; closed Saturday and Sunday.
• Secaucus Junction : Monday to Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Trenton Transit Center : Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; closed Saturday, Sunday and holidays

NJ Transit riders, some who have many unused paper or virtual tickets, are upset after learning their old unused tickets, which previously had no expiration date, will be worthless after July 30.

The angry reactions came after NJ Transit started publicizing a new policy that all one way tickets will expire in 30 days, beginning on July 1. Before that policy was passed as part of the 15% fare increase package approved by NJ Transit’s board on April 10 , tickets didn’t expire until used.

Several passengers, including Joe Versaggi, president of the New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers , filed formal complaints about the policy change with the state Division of Consumer Affairs. Some hinted they may take the transit agency to court.

“We paid for those tickets under the conditions and terms in effect when we purchased them,” said Versaggi, adding he filed a complaint on May 6. “My 95-year-old mother has 14 tickets she can’t use by July 30. We’re stuck with them.”

Unlike other regional commuter railroads, such as the Long Island Rail Road and Metro North, NJ Transit doesn’t issue refunds for single ride tickets.

“It’s an underhanded practice. They got the money, now they’re stealing the transportation,” he said.

The Consumer Affairs Division confirmed it received eight complaints and determined it doesn’t have jurisdiction over NJ Transit and referred those cases to NJ Transit, said Lisa Coryell, a spokesperson.

“DCA does not have the authority to order NJ Transit to honor tickets purchased under the previous expiration policy,” she said. “The CFA (Consumer Fraud Act) does not apply to the sale of merchandise by government entities, including state agencies.”

DCA forwarded the complaints to NJ Transit without a recommendation, said Michael Symons, a DCA spokesperson.

Versaggi said the next step for passengers is to put pressure on the state legislature.

NJ Transit officials defended the policy as following other commuter agencies practice.

“NJ Transit’s 30-day expiration date falls well within the average range of other transit agencies, and affords our customers ample time to use a one-way ticket after it’s purchased,’ said John Chartier, an agency spokesperson. “As a standard fare policy, many transit systems in the country have expiration dates on one-way tickets.”

Some riders said they already wrote to lawmakers and legislative leaders about the policy change.

Eric Goldberg of West New York said he has 273 two-fare zone bus tickets that he and his wife purchased in 2023. They used money they had in a pre tax transit benefit account to purchase the tickets and stand to lose $955 due to the policy change.

Goldberg said his work situation, that had him commuting to New York, changed, resulting in the surplus of tickets.

Other passengers said they have many unused tickets purchased before the 2020 coronavirus pandemic which haven’t be used due to working remotely from home or working a hybrid schedule. Now they’re worried they wont be able to use them before July 30 and will lose the money they paid for them

“It’s about the past tickets already purchased and sold as non-expiring tickets,” Goldberg said. “These tickets have been sold as non-expiring. That is the only thing that matters here. Why does this agency believe it can do this to thousands, if not millions, of customers?

“NJ Transit is in a clear breach of contract here.”

NJ Transit officials said publicizing the change now “should provide customers with ample time to use any one-way tickets currently in their possession,” Chartier said. “We strongly urge customers to avoid purchasing any additional one-way tickets that they won’t be able to use by July 31, 2024 as they will not be refundable.”

Despite hearing public comments at the May 8 board meeting from some riders asking for the policy to be rolled back on the older tickets, NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett said there are no plans to do that.

He did hint there might be some case by case decisions made to give refunds in the case of hardship. Current NJ Transit policy gives no refunds for single ride tickets.

“If someone had a hardship case and they wanted to send that to customer service, we’ll take a look at it,” he said. “The reaction were seeing isn’t matching the data we have. We’re going to stick with the plan.”

NJ Transits fiscal year 2025 budget includes $25 million from the change in expiration date. An NJ Transit paper handout from the Bergen County fare increase hearing mentions implementing a 30 day expiration date on “all one way tickets” but did not specify that policy applied to previously purchased tickets.

One result has been an increase in the number of people trying to sell the tickets online. Facebook Marketplace saw an increase from 4 to 13 people over two days selling NJ Transit paper tickets, some purchased as far back as 2019.

Corbett said concerns about fraudulent paper tickets being sold second hand is one factor in placing an expiration date on the older tickets. “Having that expiration date minimizes that,” he said.

Pedestrian fatally struck by NJ Transit train near South Orange Station

A pedestrian was fatally hit by a New Jersey Transit train Wednesday morning in South Orange, causing delays to multiple rail lines, NJ Transit said.

At about 9:12 a.m. Wednesday the Morris and Essex Line train 6324 struck and fatally injured an adult pedestrian near the South Orange Station.

There were no reported injuries to the 60 customers or crew on board the train, said NJ Transit.

As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday the Morris and Essex Line and the Gladstone Branch service were both experiencing 30-minute delays in both directions, according to New Jersey Transit. The train originally departed Summit at 8:56 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Penn Station New York at 9:42 a.m.

NJ Transit police are leading the investigation.
