Red Dead Online: 10 Things You Need To Do In New Austin

Red Dead Online is expansive and filled with locations. New Austin may be a blip on the map to some but there are some things players should do there.

In  Red Dead Online , players will most likely want to explore the new regions of the game. For fans of the first  Red Dead  game, revisiting New Austin offers some new experiences. New activities and roles will allow players to experience New Austin in a brand new way, either with bounty hunting or searching the desert.

RELATED:  Red Dead Redemption 2: The 10 Biggest Plot Holes In The Game

With a few different towns throughout the region, players can find missions and objectives to complete. Some players might even find the time to go fishing and hunting. With the new activities introduced in  Red Dead II, players are sure to find something to entertain themselves with.

10 Try To Make It To Mexico

Players were able to travel to Mexico in the first game, but they do not have the chance in the sequel. That is, they do not have a legitimate chance. Through the use of glitches, players can travel through Nuevo Paraíso again.

By performing a glitch , players can make their way to Mexico. The only place that will have buildings is El Presidio, with the rest of the area being empty. The shape of the land will match the Mexico of the first game, letting players explore a new area.

9 Complete Stranger Missions In Free Roam

Players can complete some free roam missions for the strangers located in New Austin. There are four of them in total – Shaky and James Langton give negative honor while Sheriff Freeman and Bonnie MacFarlane give positive honor. Depending on which person the player goes to, different types of missions will be given.

The negative honor missions will require players to kill others, destroy wagons, and break people out of prison. Sheriff Freeman will ask the player to help with repossessions and escorts, while Bonnie will ask the player to deliver items and hunt wildlife.

8 Explore A Familiar Area

Anyone who has played the first game will recognize a lot of areas around New Austin. While there are familiar areas, some places have changed a little bit. For instance, there is no Warthington Ranch or Butter Bridge in the  Online version of the game. As expected as well, there is no bridge from New Austin to Mexico.

RELATED:  Red Dead Online: 10 Essential Herbs For The Moonshiner Role

With updated graphics, players will be able to explore a region they came to know so well. Being set about 20 years before the first game, a few structures and towns take on a different appearance.

7 Experience An Occupied Tumbleweed

While venturing in New Austin, players will come across the town of Tumbleweed . Fans of the first game will remember Tumbleweed was a ghost town overrun by a gang. It would seem that in its prime, Tumbleweed was a bustling town in the region.

Players are able to buy items from the shops around the town and go into the saloon for a drink. Players can even find the stranger named Sheriff Freeman in the town, completing missions around the town. It is sad to think the town will turn into nothing in a few years.

6 Look For Points Of Interest

Like every region in the game, players can find some points of interest in New Austin. This can come in the form of a crashed hearse with an empty coffin to a crashed airship. Players could also look through the cemeteries in the region to see references to popular culture and humorous graves.

There is nothing like coming across something unexpected as players travel through the desert. Taking out the camera and snapping a picture of the site is a good way to remember the player's travels.

5 Take A Fishing Trip

Sometimes it's just nice to take a break and fish . New Austin has some good fishing spots as well, allowing players to fish in Lake Don Julio, the San Luis River, and the Sea of Coronado. Finding a nice spot along one of these areas away from players can be peaceful.

RELATED:  Red Dead Online: 10 Most Important Herbs And Where To Find Them

On top of having some innocent fun, the fish can be sold for a profit. Nothing like making some money from a task as simple as catching a few fish.

4 Search For Collectibles

Players with the collector role will be able to search for items throughout the game's world. In New Austin, players will have a reason to go off into the desert and the abandoned houses. Inside of chests in the houses, alcohol bottles or family heirlooms can be found.

On top of that, players can use a metal detector to locate coins, arrowheads, and fossils. Certain events may also play out in the cemeteries around the region, with the player being asked to dig up a grave. Just be ready to run, lawmen might come after the player.

3 Hunt For Legendary Animals

With the naturalist role, players can go after legendary animals. These animals can be found while roaming around New Austin or players can be assigned to find them. When going after these animals, players can either sedate them and bring them to Harriet Davenport or kill the animal for Gus Macmillan.

RELATED:  10 Small Animals You Didn't Know Were In Red Dead Online

If the animal is killed, players can unlock unique clothing. The legendary animals can be found throughout New Austin, with examples of them being a cougar, an elk, or a coyote.

2 Start A Gang Fight

Thieve's Landing is a place full of  outlaws and gangs . Players looking for a fight against large groups of enemies should head to the town. Shooting one person in the street is enough to turn the entire town against them. It is also a good way to practice survival.

No lawmen will come in to attack the player, meaning there is no worry about a bounty. Locations for a good defense include the boat and the top of the buildings. If the player happens to die, they do not have to worry about being attacked again unless they start it.

1 Go Bounty Hunting

With how big and open New Austin is, bounty hunting brings a bit of a challenge. Getting a bounty from Tumbleweed or Armadillo can send players into gang hideouts or close to mines. The openness also challenges the player to sneak up on enemies, possibly bringing them in alive.

The openness of the region also makes for a good horse chase. After killing or capturing a target, bringing the body back to the prison will give the player a nice reward.

A map showing the shape and the borders of New Austin

A map showing the shape and the borders of New Austin

This state is characterized as a largely rugged and arid desert in the process of westward expansion. As such, there is an expected presence of wild animals and outlaws. Armadillo and Tumbleweed are the main settlements of the territory, although it is generally fairly rural; by the time of Redemption 2 , it is the second only to Ambarino as the most sparsely populated region.

Major industries in New Austin include farming, ranching, oil, and transportation. The State has attracted some immigrants (domestic and foreign) to work on the railways and other developments occurring. New Austin also acts as a key region between US and Mexico trade. There are hints of the territory's previous Spanish/Mexican heritage, in terms of place names and architecture.

By the start of the 20th century, the region is going through some hard times, as Armadillo has been hit by a cholera outbreak, and the Del Lobo Gang run frequent and terrorize civilians indiscriminately, with law enforcement and government being quite weak in responding to the crisis in the territory. Tumbleweed is the region's major settlement by this time, competing with Armadillo for a key railway connection.

By 1911, however, New Austin has stabilized somewhat, as Armadillo recovers from the outbreak and expands, winning the key railway connection and becoming a major hub of commerce and settlement in the area. However, Tumbleweed becomes abandoned and is overrun by more hostile gangs, and while law enforcement is somewhat stronger, they still struggle to cope with the many outlaws that still inhabit the region.

The name of the region and its largest town as well as its border location, prominent fort, mines, and oil derricks all show a strong Texas influence. The lack of large settlements, as well as a sparse population and untouched landscape is broadly reflective of the Southwestern United States (especially Arizona and New Mexico) during the turn of the century.

Geography [ ]

RDR2 NewAustin

Map of the Southwestern US as shown in-game, with New Austin highlighted in red.

New Austin lies between Nuevo Paraíso to the south and West Elizabeth to the northeast. It comprises four regions: Cholla Springs , Gaptooth Ridge , Hennigan's Stead , and Río Bravo .

South of New Austin is the San Luis River , which acts as a natural border to Nuevo Paraíso . New Austin is also bordered to the east by Flat Iron Lake , which leads to the Lannahechee River and gives New Austin key water links to the rest of the United States. New Austin is bordered to the north by the Redemption Mountains , while the Sea of Coronado and more mountains border it to the west, giving the region a greater feel of isolation and remoteness.

The terrain of New Austin resembles aspects of several real Southwestern U.S. states:

  • Cholla Springs resembles the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona, including saguaro cactus, desert scrub, and prickly pears.
  • The scrub desert of Río Bravo is strongly reminiscent of the Chihuahua Desert regions of New Mexico, but also bears a resemblance to the cliffs within the Diablo Canyon Recreational Area park in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
  • Gaptooth Ridge is mostly based on the transitional area between the Sonoran and Mojave Desert regions of western Arizona with its Joshua trees, tan rocks, saguaro cactus, and rugged formations, and Arizona is the only American state where both Joshua trees and saguaro cacti naturally occur. This area also has light influences from southern California and Nevada.
  • Hennigan's Stead resembles many parts of Texas; the central area is based on many areas in Central Texas such as Hill Country, with its dry plains, oak trees, and small hills; the bordering area with Cholla Springs is heavily based on Big Bend Country, which is more desert-like and has many canyons and ridges. Finally, the areas east of Stillwater Creek are bayous, and are based on the Gulf Coast region of Texas.

Geographically, New Austin seems to correspond with Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas; from an in-game geography perspective, as well as clues from the terrain in out-of-bounds areas, it seems that areas representing central and eastern Texas exist in between New Austin (and its Mexican neighbor, Nuevo Paraiso) and Lemoyne.

Interactive Map [ ]

Red dead redemption [ ], red dead redemption 2 [ ], general [ ].

  • In Red Dead Redemption , there is an area north of MacFarlane's Ranch which is covered in snow; the in-game map shows that it is in-bounds, but seems to be outside of New Austin's political boundaries. This area was not included in the prequel.
  • In Red Dead Redemption 2 , the player can cross the Sea of Coronado to its western side, and can pass through two ravines and once again go outside of New Austin's defined boundaries on the map. This area has been used to glitch through into Mexico.
  • While New Austin is intentionally designed to be analogous to Texas in terms of location and geography, the real life state of Texas is confirmed to exist in the Redemption universe according to a newspaper article. [1]
  • New Austin became a state in 1845, which is also the same year that Texas was admitted to the Union. [ citation needed ]
  • This Easter Egg could have been a subtle hint towards the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 's first official trailer the 20th of October, 4 months later. Worth noting that 4 days before the trailer was released, Rockstar themselves posted a Tweet in which they also teased their upcoming title.
  • The railroad tunnel between Hennigan's Stead and Cholla Springs and the snow capped canyon in north Hennigan's Stead are some of the few places in the game where the player is, technically, off the map.
  • The racing track in Gaptooth Ridge is the westernmost point in the game.
  • As with the boundary between New Austin and West Elizabeth, the transition of the music when the player moves between New Austin and Nuevo Paraíso can take some time to register.
  • This glitch no longer works as of Version 1.7.2.
  • After the events of the Blackwater Massacre , all of West Elizabeth south of the Upper Montana River was put under lockdown by the Pinkertons. Although this was a device put in the game to prevent the player from straying to New Austin early, it is possible to evade the Pinkerton patrols long enough to reach New Austin, where one can see on the game map that New Austin was also put under the same lockdown with all of southern West Elizabeth as well.
  • Related, the game files include both 1899 and 1907 variants for most shopkeepers on the region, but the game only uses one of these models for each shopkeeper in both time periods. In addition to this, in 1907 none of the graves found in the region ever have a date-of-death beyond 1899. This suggests that there were originally meant to be more differences between the 1899 version and the 1907 version, but in the final game it's an unchanging combination of both, which would explain why there was so much change between 1907 and 1911.
  • Despite New Austin being the largest territory in the game, only one story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in the state, " An Honest Day's Labors ".
  • New Austin is the only American state in the game that does not share a border with New Hanover .
  • The cholera epidemic which plagues Armadillo in 1907 has caused many residents from both the town and neighboring settlements to flee in fear, including the MacFarlane family and much of MacFarlane's Ranch .
  • Testament to the region's lack of modernity compared to eastern states, much of New Austin is underdeveloped and sparsely populated. The settlements of MacFarlane's Ranch , Thieves Landing , and Rathskeller Fork lack amenities such as a safehouse, general store, gunsmith, etc. By 1911, the once-prosperous town of Tumbleweed was completely abandoned as a result of the railroad being built to nearby Armadillo instead.
  • New Austin is the only American state in the game that lacks an official state flag, but considering the flags of West Elizabeth , New Hanover and Ambarino weren't revealed until a later update of Red Dead Online , it is possible this may change with a future update.
  • Unlike every other town in the game, the three major settlements in this region don't have a visible outline on the map, even if placed under lockdown.
  • North of Greenhollow there is an abandoned homestead which is not present in Red Dead Redemption . This homestead is a moonshine shack for the Moonshiner role in Red Dead Online . This is the only Moonshine shack to appear in Story Mode; all others in Tall Trees, Bayou Nwa, The Heartlands and Grizzlies West are not present in Story Mode. This may be due to a developer oversight as New Austin was created late into development.
  • On the map, there's a house slightly southeast from Rathskeller Fork , which belongs to the alchemist mentioned in the newspapers whose very house explodes the very moment John Marston discovers it while free-roaming during the epilogue . After exploring the remains and looting a lockbox containing the Explosive Slug Pamphlet , the ruins, including the lockbox will disappear if the player leaves the area and will no longer appear during the rest of the game, despite the house location still being marked in the map. Also, despite being already marked on the map by 1898 and its destruction only happening in 1907, the house is nowhere to be seen during the events of Red Dead Online .

New austin in rdr 2 makes me crave a red dead redemption remaster.

Your changes have been saved

A little piece of the true Wild West hidden in a corner of the map.

I only recently got to the end of Red Dead Redemption 2, some four-and-a-bit years after it came out. I put that down to the fact that the game's stunning world was far more engaging to me than the overly prescriptive cookie-cutter missions (which I wrote about a short while back ). It was a game that, during the height of the pandemic, was a way for me to experience some semblance of nature and grand adventure, which me and everyone else was deprived of throughout 2020 and 2021.

But now that things have somewhat normalised, I've gone back to being an obsessive completionist (at least of a game's main story) and finally got round to finishing Red Dead 2. I wasn't massively compelled to keep going after the story ended and John was all settled in at Beecher's Hope, but there was just one thing left in the game that really pricked my curiosity. That was the New Austin region - the setting where much of Red Dead Redemption 1 takes place, and which is teased as a place you can go in the sequel.

Bizzarely, the story never takes you to this sizable corner of the map. During one of the later missions in the epilogue with the wildest woman in the west Sadie Adler , the camera casts your gaze over the arid Cholla Springs area of New Austin, where in the distance through the shimmering desert heat you can just about glimpse the town of Armadillo - the wonderfully archetypal frontier town that's the first major place you visit in the original game.

When I first started galloping towards Armadillo from Beecher's Hope, I didn't believe that the game would actually let me get that far. I assumed that there would be a sheer drop from a cliff that you couldn't get down from, and that Armadillo was just an untextured cluster of buildings in distant, unreachable, untextured land designed to tease the setting of the first game while not actually letting you explore it.

It's only once I got down into those dusty plains that I began to entertain the idea that maybe - just maybe - Rockstar had, for some reason, made New Austin accessible. As I approached Armadillo, I was awaiting a single bullet to end my foolish pursuit, or for my 'Wanted' level to suddenly shoot up. At one point, a pair of Mexican banditos stopped me in the road, and I figured this would be the moment where my journey to Armadillo came to an end. But after disposing of the miscreants with relative ease, the path was clear to my destination.

  • ALSO READ - Sadie Adler Should've Been Rockstar's First Female Protagonist

It was an incredible moment realising that Armadillo, along with the entirety of the original Red Dead Redemption map (outside Mexico), was here in RDR 2, even though it serves no meaningful purpose to the story. In fact, the entire region is so scarce that it almost makes you wonder if it was going to contain more content before Rockstar decided to reel in the scope of the sequel a bit.

But while it's hardly fleshed out, some work clearly went into it. Armadillo is not in a good way in Red Dead Redemption 2, blighted by a succession of plagues and disease outbreaks that have left the town in ruins, while Tumbleweed, the town abandoned in Red Dead Redemption (which is set several years later), is plodding along just fine, and you can even team up with the local sheriff to combat the local Mexican Del Lobo gang. More intrepid explorers will even find recognisable buildings like the Macfarlane Ranch and the house of the gollum-like Seth Briars, as well as all kinds of curious little easter eggs.

Having this whole state in Red Dead 2 at all feels like one great big easter egg. By this point in the game, you're well armed, levelled up in all the key skills, and don't have the story looming over you any more. This makes exploring this area relatively stress-free - a trip down memory lane you get as a reward for completing the main game. As you set foot in this familiar but visually refreshed old land, suddenly you start remembering all these places that made an impression on you back when you played the first game (a long time ago, in my case), and you feel compelled to check in on them. I spent a good five hours lolloping around New Austin, revisiting the old towns and forts that I used to roam all those years ago.

The inclusion of this big and entirely out-the-way region can probably be attributed to the fact that it's largely desert scrubland - classic Wild West territory with cacti, sandy ground, and smooth rusty-hued rocks sticking out of the undulating terrain. On a technical level, it feels less detailed and meticulously designed than other regions of Red Dead 2, which makes sense as the landmass is based on a game from 2010, when games had far less capacity for diverse terrain and landscapes.

New Austin may not be as visually spectacular as most of RDR 2's other settings and states, but there's something distinctly 'Western' about this region that you just don't see in the rest of the game. It feels like the Wild West through the lens of 1950s movies and popular culture. Gallivanting around it with no ties or obligations to anyone other than whoever offers you a good price for the region's bounties makes you feel like the classic western loner - Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name, whose true purpose and goals are a mystery.

While the scarcity of this region puts into perspective the massive progress made in the eight years between Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, it also made me yearn for the original game's more classical take on the Wild West. With Rockstar seemingly shelving their plans for a Red Dead Redemption Remaster, for now I'll have to content myself with exploring gaming's quintessential Western region in this small corner of Red Dead Redemption 2.

10 Places You Need to Visit in Red Dead Redemption 2

by enricofairme · Published November 9, 2018 2:03 PM · Updated November 29, 2019 12:48 PM

Red Dead Redemption 2 mutant creature

The world of  Red Dead Redemption 2 is huge. There are a ton of places to visit and explore, with many mysteries associated with each spot. To help you sort out exactly where you should go, I’ve put together this list of 10 places you need to visit in  Red Dead Redemption 2 .  Warning: Spoilers Below .

10. Meteor House & Meteor Crater

Meteor House Location in Red Dead Redemption 2

One of the first places I want to highlight is actually two spots in the northeast corner of the map. The first location is called the Meteor House. This house, seen above, is the location of a meteor crash. When you reach this location, you are going to want to make your way inside for a… surprise of sorts. After you’re finished exploring the Meteor House, make your way slightly northwest to find a meteor crater, which is pretty crazy to see in the world. As is implied, the large meteor in the crater is responsible for the small meteor falling onto the Meteor House.

9. Hani’s Bethel (AKA UFO House)

UFO easter egg location in Red Dead Redemption 2

It wouldn’t be a Rockstar game without the inclusion of aliens, and the next location has some. That’s right, if you want to see a UFO in  Red Dead Redemption 2 , you will want to make your way to a location called, Hani’s Bethel, which is north of Emerald Station. Inside this shack you will find a number of decomposing bodies and a Mysterious Sermon. This Mysterious Sermon talks about an alien voyager who will take up believers spirits when he comes (cough* Heaven’s Gate reference *cough). The Mysterious Sermon also mentions “at the second hour under the half moon”, which is a clue to enter the cabin after 2 AM. When you enter you will see a UFO appear above the roof. It will hang around for a couple hours (or fly away immediately when if you leave the cabin) and then fly away. Pretty interesting… Maybe there’s more to this?

8. Witches Cauldron

Witches Cauldron Location in Red Dead Redemption 2

The next location is fairly mysterious and lacks much explanation (so far). To find the Witches Cauldron, make your way north of the N in Ambarino on your map. In this area you will find a shack in the middle of some trees with a number of interesting items you can loot inside as well as a cauldron. If you approach the cauldron you will be prompted to take a drink of the mysterious liquid. Drinking the liquid will cause you to pass out and wake up some distance from the Witches Cauldron. What makes this area even more bizarre is the fact there is a Raven perched inside the shack that will watch you the entire time.

7. Devil’s Cave (Hidden Tunnel)

Devil's Cave in Red Dead Redemption 2

There is an interesting cave located west of Hanging Dog Ranch which has the “Devil” inside it. When you reach the lower area of the cave, a man will speak to you telling you to leave his cave and that he’s (not) the Devil. This interaction can be repeated a number (by passing the time) of times to get different lines from the “Devil”.

6. Manmade Mutant (House West of Van Horn)

Mutant Creature House Location in Red Dead Redemption 2

The next location I want to highlight features a bizarre mutant creature on the upper floor of a house to the west of the Van Horn Trading Post. When you arrive at the house it will seem like there is no way inside, but there actually is a way. You can use the crates in the wagon on the west side of the house to reach an open window on the second floor. Inside this room you will find a number of experiments, including what appears to be a mutant creature on the wall.

The 10 best areas of red dead redemption 2, ranked.

It's no doubt difficult for fans of Red Dead Redemption 2 to choose the best area in the game, but these 10 rank highest for their beauty or interest.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a large and expansive game. Like all of Rockstar 's other open-world titles, the map is filled with unique areas, all of which have their own distinct look and personality. Whereas the first game in the series was a more straightforward Western, Red Dead Redemption 2 forgoes most of the Western trappings in favor of more mountainous, lush, green, and even swampy areas.

No matter where a player goes on the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, they are bound to come across something interesting - be it a fun random event, or a beautiful sight. But these are the absolute best of the best areas to visit.

Van Horn is easily one of the most unique locations in Red Dead Redemption 2 , even if spending time in it makes one feel dirty. Amongst all the towns, villages, and cities in Red Dead 2 , Van Horn is arguably the most decrepit.

The entire town is in complete disrepair, complete with crumbling buildings , collapsing docks, and even a sunken boat just resting in the water. The site is also quite unique in that its citizens serve as the local police force, shooting anyone (like the player) who makes trouble.

Finding a bayou in the game was an unexpected but welcome surprise. The entire Lemoyne area is very Louisiana, with Saint Denis being a fictional version of New Orleans . Bayou Nwa is a very unique location within Red Dead Redemption 2 , serving as a swampy, muddy, and generally dirty area, filled with animals like alligators, cranes, egrets, spoonbills, pelicans, and turtles.

Traversing the area can prove frustrating owing to its abundance of dangerous animals and the muddy ground that makes travel slow, but there's no denying that it's memorable.

Braithwaite Manor

Braithwaite Manor is an interesting location - not just owing to its physicality, but also its importance to the plot - storming the manor and burning it to the ground proves one of the most memorable events in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

It's a fun location, complete with a woman locked in an outhouse, a stunning, tree-lined entryway, and a plantation house resembling real locations, including Oak Alley Plantation and Houmas House Plantation, both of which are found in Louisiana.

Valentine is the first town players come across in Red Dead Redemption 2 (provided they don't go wandering). It's a small town without much to do, composed of little more than a train station, a farm, and a lined street with a saloon, police station, general store, hotel, and weapons store.

RELATED:  Red Dead Redemption 2: 10 Arthur Morgan Quotes That Prove He's A Villain

That said, it is absolutely breathtaking on first glimpse. Watching citizens go about their business is utterly magnetic, and the muddy streets make for a stellar showcase in technicality, detail, and physics.

Like Van Horn, Rhodes is another town that time has passed by. But unlike Van Horn, Rhodes still has some semblance of civility and cleanliness. Rhodes stands out from other towns of the game owing to its dusty red streets, lending it a very memorable atmosphere and physicality.

The Rhodes Saloon is also a gorgeous location, complete with two stories, a winding staircase, and blackjack upstairs. There's also a fun little bonus to be found, as a captive is being held prisoner in the gunsmith's basement.

Tall Trees is undeniably one of the most beautiful locations in Red Dead 2 , filled with giant Sierra Redwoods that make players feel tiny in the midst of nature. It is also one of the creepiest.

Strange sounds can sometimes be heard in Tall Trees, the Skinner Brothers (and the grisly remains of their victims) plague the area, it's filled with dangerous animals, and there's even mention of a sports team called the Blackwater Athletics who went missing around the area - likely victims of the Skinner Brothers.

Grizzlies West

The first Red Dead Redemption contained some snowy and mountainous areas, but nothing to the extent of Grizzlies West. Grizzlies West is a spectacular location, complete with the  stellar sight of snowy mountains , bounding rabbits, and black birds soaring against a piercing blue sky.

It also conveys a fantastic sense of scope and loneliness, the towering hills dwarfing the player and the suffocating silence making them feel alone in the uncompromising wilderness.

New Austin is by far one of the most unique locations of Red Dead Redemption 2 , a barren and expansive desert in a game otherwise filled with greenery, trees, and rivers. While the area is nothing but a modern recreation of the first game's map, it does enough to differentiate itself from the 2010 original.

For example, Armadillo is a disease-ridden ghost town, and Tumbleweed is still an active town with a sheriff, saloon, general store, and gunsmith.

Strawberry is a fantastic little town. The area is absolutely gorgeous, complete with beautiful, lush trees, a lodge-style hotel, and a river running through the length of the town.

It's also home to one of the greatest missions in the game, which sees Arthur breaking Micah out of jail and shooting up half the town so Micah can retrieve a pair of pistols.

Saint Denis

It doesn't get much better, or more unique, than Saint Denis. Red Dead Redemption 2 is primarily concerned with the approach of modernization and civilization, and Saint Denis is its physical embodiment. It's by far the largest city in the game, its streets packed with wagons, pedestrians, and horses.

There's a ton of stuff to do, and the New Orleans-inspired architecture is simply magnificent. It's also home to some great missions and subplots, and its billowing black smoke portends dangerous things to come.

A local’s travel guide to Austin: what to eat, see and do in three days

Standout spots include food truck parks, honky-tonk hangouts and Lady Bird’s wildflower sanctuary

A ustin has become one of the most popular places in the US to move to, and also to visit. Droves of people descend on the city in March for the South by Southwest tech, film and music festival and in the fall for the Austin City Limits music festival. And Austin is one of the top five destinations in the US for bachelorette parties. Don’t let the bachelorettes scare you away, though. Austin is a great place to spend a few days, so long as you do it like a local.

My family and I moved to Austin 12 years ago, after living in New York for many years. I’ve also lived in Washington DC , the San Francisco Bay Area and Philadelphia. Austin has a feel all of its own: it has a world-class music scene, great food that now goes well beyond Tex-Mex and barbecue, Texas history and fun shopping and museums – all with less hassle than bigger cities in the US.

Here’s my guide to a long weekend there. In addition to picks for adults, I’ve included some recommendations for families that our kids (now teenagers) have loved through the years. And I’m vegetarian, so I’ve chosen some of the city’s best veggie eats options. Don’t worry, my meat-eating wife made sure that I included great barbecue choices, too.

Day 1: Pool party & pickles

Start your day with a walk or run on the trail at Town Lake (it’s officially labeled on maps as Lady Bird Lake, but locals refer to it as Town Lake). This 10-mile (16km) trail on both sides of a dammed portion of Texas’s Colorado River (a different Colorado River than the bigger and more famous one) is tree-shaded, beautiful and one of Austinites’ favorite places to exercise. If you have time, walk through Zilker Park, which is right next to the trail. If you have kids, go to the new and very fun playground at Butler Park, complete with a splash pad just up the path from the playground.

Austin was one of the cities that started the food truck scene in the US several decades ago, and now there are more than 2,000 food trucks in the city. Some are located in trailer parks that have multiple truck options and picnic table seating. After your morning at Town Lake and Zilker Park, have lunch at the Picnic food truck park, or the nearby original location of local favorite Chuy’s (the Tex-Mex chain is now expanding throughout the US). Other great lunch options include Green Mesquite and Carpenters Hall .

In the afternoon, go for a swim at Barton Springs Pool . Open year-round, this massive basin measures three acres and is fed by underground natural springs. It’s open throughout the day, and it’s free before 8am and after 9pm.

Head back to your hotel or Airbnb for a rest, and then get ready for dinner. Tonight is casual: barbecue at Terry Black’s , or if you’re vegan, the food truck Rollin Smoke for a fantastic vegan barbecue sandwich made with baby portobello mushrooms, spicy slaw, barbecue sauce and pickles. It’s my favorite vegan barbecue sandwich in Austin (who says you can’t have barbecue if you’re veggie?), and it’s located in a food truck park with beautiful old trees shading the tables. Rollin Smoke has very good meat options, too (I’m told).

A bearded man hands a wrapped meal to a customer from a food truck.

If you have young children, head to Phil’s Icehouse . They have burgers and a full playground where the kids can play before or after dinner. Just don’t put them on the spinning flower after the meal. And be sure to get some ice-cream after dinner at Amy’s Ice Creams , a longtime favorite of Austinites. Amy’s is located next to Phil’s, and it’s so good we had an Amy’s truck serve dessert at our wedding.

After dinner, head out to see some music at one of Austin’s many local music venues. One of our favorites is the Continental Club . There’s a main club downstairs and the intimate Continental Gallery upstairs, where you can see local musicians in a cozy space. Other great venues include C-Boy’s and the new Moody Amphitheater . For full local music listings on any night, check the Austin Chronicle . And if it’s summer, look to see if Blues on the Green has a free concert that night. If you have kids, take them to the free Rock the Park concert series, produced by local radio station KUTX.

Day 2: Breakfast tacos, books & bats

Start your day back at the lake with a rowing workout that’s almost, but not quite, on the lake. Rō Fitness is a local studio that has outdoor rowing classes by the water. It’s way more fun than working out at an indoor studio.

You’ll need fuel after your workout. Grab a breakfast taco at Veracruz or Tacodeli or Tamale House East . Breakfast tacos are an Austin staple (they are to Austin as bagels are to New York), and all three of these places have delicious options.

Today is a shopping day. Start out at BookPeople , one of the greatest bookstores in the US. It’s locally owned and independent, but the size of a superstore. BookPeople also dares to take a stand on issues, including being one of two bookstores that recently sued Texas state officials over a newly passed book ban law. It has an excellent kids section, and organizes live readings by kids’ authors.

After you’ve gotten your book fix, head across the street to Waterloo Records , one of the best record stores in the US. Waterloo carries new and used vinyl, CDs and merchandise from rock to jazz to local Texas music. For more shopping options, head over to the stores along South Congress Avenue and South First Street (including Roadhouse Relics , a neon art store and gallery that is one of our favorites), and if you want to go thrifting, our teens say Austin Pets Alive Thrift and Texas Thrift are the best.

Steve Sachs shops for music at Waterloo Records in Austin.

After all of the shopping, it’s time for lunch. If you’re near BookPeople and Waterloo, head over to Soup Peddler, a local place for homemade soups, smoothies and fantastic grilled cheese sandwiches (trivia: Soup Peddler got its name because the founder started out delivering homemade soup by bike before opening full store locations). Or if you’re near South Congress and South First, go to the food trucks on South First or Underdog or Fresa’s .

As you’re heading back to rest up, grab an ice-cream at Amy’s, a gelato at Dolce Neve or cupcakes at Sugar Mama’s .

Some good dinner options for tonight include Loro , Suerte or Este . And if you’re looking for a vegetarian option, one of my favorite veggie restaurants is Bouldin Creek Cafe . It’s casual, with a great menu that includes vegan chips and queso. If it’s nice out, take a seat on the patio.

Tonight’s activity could be going to see the bats at the Congress Street Bridge. Austin has the largest urban bat colony in North America, and in season they live in one of the bridges that crosses the Colorado River (they migrate to Mexico in the cooler weather). Bat-watching is a lot more fun than you might imagine from horror movies (and these bats look more like birds than vampire bats). If you’re not in the mood for bats, head to the legendary Broken Spoke . Get there early for dance lessons, then hoof it at this classic Texas honky-tonk.

Day 3: Live oaks & Lady Bird wildflowers

It’s your last day in Austin, and it’s a good one for visiting a museum. Some of our favorites include the Bullock Museum to learn all about the history of our state (bonus fact: Texas was once its own country , and some people want it to be its own country again ). If you’re a fan of 1960s history, visit the excellent LBJ Presidential Library , which is the home of the 36th president’s papers. It has good exhibits on the US civil rights movement and 1960s US history in general. Another excellent museum option is the Blanton Museum of Art , or you could tour the Texas capitol (Austin is, after all, the capital of Texas). If you’re a nature fan, head to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center . And if you have kids, the Thinkery is an excellent children’s museum.

For lunch, it’s time for more barbecue (you’re in Austin, don’t fight it). Two terrific barbecue trucks are Mickelthwait and LeRoy and Lewis . And LeRoy and Lewis has another of my favorite vegetarian barbecue options: cauliflower burnt ends.

In the afternoon, head back to Town Lake. This time, get out on the water by renting a kayak, stand up paddleboard or paddle boat (a kid-friendly option). If you have time and energy for a drink, head over to the ABGB for happy hour. They have a great beer selection, lots of outdoor seating and local bands playing music.

Two kayaks float in a large body of water.

For your farewell dinner, a few of our favorite restaurants that are a bit on the fancier end are Hestia , Uchi or the Lenoir wine garden, where dinner is served under live oak trees more than a hundred years old. And for a fantastic vegan option, go to Fabrik for a seven-course vegan tasting menu. You’ll need a reservation well in advance (they’re currently booking four to six weeks out). And for your final night in Austin, head out to another music venue. Or if you have kids, take them to the Austin favorite Peter Pan Mini Golf , which has been around for 75 years, or check Do512 Family for family events that are happening the dates you’re in town.

Question Time

When is the best time of year to visit austin.

There’s no dispute: it’s hot in the summer in Austin . A great time to visit is between October and May. From June through September, many days will be over 100F. If you’re here in the summer, spend lots of time at the Barton Springs pool.

Is Austin expensive?

Austin hotels can be expensive during big events like South by Southwest or the Formula One weekend. But for most dates, it’s less expensive than larger cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Will I need a car to get around Austin?

Most of the places that I’ve recommended are within walking distance from downtown. You can also rent bikes and scooters to get around. Austin’s public transportation is primarily through local buses, which can take you further out if needed. And car-share options are easy as well.

Steve Sachs is managing director of the Guardian US. He has worked at large and startup media companies for more than 20 years. He loves all kinds of music, and his most recent favorite concert, the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame Show, featured a host of singer-songwriters including Lyle Lovett and Emmylou Harris
