By the time we got back to the hotel, I was Googling just about everything I could about both of these amazing locations!

There should also be time to look into Malmesbury Abbey, a beautiful 12th century church, once home to Eilmer the Flying Monk.

Bath and the Avebury & Silbury Hill complex

As an alternative to Stonehenge, why not visit the Avebury Stone Circle and Silbury Hill. The stone circle is much larger than Stonehenge, but maybe not so picturesque, and Silbury Hill is a manmade hill from the same prehistoric period.

Bath & Bowood House

Bowood House is the home of the Marquis of Lansdowne. It is also where Joseph Priestley, tutor to the sons of the 1st Marquis, discovered oxygen in 1774. For garden enthusiasts, the rhododendrons and azaleas in the woodland garden are magnificent between April and June.

Bath & Salisbury Cathedral

Visit the beautiful 13th century Salisbury cathedral, with its soaring spire. In the Chapter House you can see one of the original copies of Magna Carta.

This was a lovely way to spend the day. We were very comfortably chauffeured out to Stonehenge and then to the town of Bath. Our driver was very helpful and informative and made sure that we saw all that we were supposed to...with hints as to where to experience special out-of-the-ordinary places as well. Stonehenge merits a visit, of course, as it is quite curious but also extremely interesting. We knew we wanted to make sure to see Stonehenge when we were in England and this day trip tour offered by LivTours answered our needs. How to visit Bath from London – Taking a Car, Public Transport or a Tour

For so many visitors, Bath is a must-do while in the UK. If you want to see the best Roman Baths near London, there is no better place to do this than in Bath. 

Add to that the city’s stunning honey-toned Georgian architecture, many centuries of history and the charming cobbled streets, and it’s easy to see why taking a day trip to Bath from London is such an essential part of the whole British experience. 

If you’re wondering whether to take a train from London to Bath Spa and where this would depart from, are considering a trip from London to Bath by car or are considering taking the National Express from London to Bath, then this guide is for you.

These aren’t the only options open to you. Sometimes the easiest way to visit an unfamiliar city is to take an organised tour where everything is taken care of for you. As well as visiting Bath near London in England, these trips may also whisk you to key sites like Stonehenge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Salisbury , Windsor or the Cotswolds .

How to get from London to Bath

• At-a-glance: Train from London Paddington to Bath Spa train station (1 hour & 20 min); 2 trains per hour

Getting from London to Bath – and of course back from Bath Spa to London Paddington – involves a journey time of approximately one hour and 20 minutes each way. So you’re looking at two hours and 40 minutes of travel to get there and back to the capital. 

Don’t forget that you’ll probably need to take a tube from wherever you’re staying to Paddington as well – and the same when you return. Paddington tube station is on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines and lies some way north of Hyde Park.

Trains from London to Bath and Bath to London call at several places en route – these are Reading, Didcot Parkway, Swindon and Chippenham. None of these are of particular interest to tourists – unless of course, you happen to have family or friends living there.

The good news for those travelling by train is that Bath Spa station is centrally located in the city, fairly close to key sites like Pulteney bridge, the Thermae Bath Spa and the Roman Baths. The Jane Austen Centre, Royal Crescent and Fashion Museum are a little further away, but can be reached on foot if you don’t mind an uphill walk.  

• At-a-glance: Bus from London Victoria to Bath Spa bus station (2 hours & 35 min+); up to 9 coaches per day

Another option is the coaches to Bath from London Victoria. It’s a fairly convenient way to travel, but it is also very time-consuming. The fastest coaches take almost twice as long as the train, and some take much longer if they make a lot of stops or there’s more traffic on the roads. 

On the plus side, tickets are cheap and the bus station is also located in central Bath; in fact it’s near the train station. National Express says the average journey time each way is 2 hours and 50 minutes, however, so it’s not the best choice for those in a hurry.

You’ll also need to factor in the time it will take to get to and from Victoria coach station. The underground station is on the District, Victoria and Circle lines, and the coach station is about 300 metres from here. 

• At-a-glance: Use postcode BA1 1TP for Southgate Shopping Centre Car Park (110 miles, paid parking)

If you want to drive rather than taking a coach or train from London Victoria or London Paddington to Bath Spa, then expect your journey each way to take around two to two-and-a-half hours. 

You’ll also need to consider parking in Bath . There are sufficient car parks, but due to narrow streets it’s not the easiest city to negotiate behind the wheel. Parking fees vary but will have to be added to your budget on top of any gas and car rental costs.

For experienced drivers, taking the car is certainly an option but it’s not the quickest or cheapest way to get to Bath from London (nor the best way to get to Bath from London in our opinion). It’s not really practical to drive around the city once you’re there, so it will mean paying to leave your vehicle in a car park all day.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It is the Kings favourite  weekend residency making it a real must-see for royal enthusiasts. Originally built by William the Conqueror, the monarchy have added additional buildings to the castle over the last 900 years. Here you can enjoy a grand tour of the State Apartments, St George's Chapel  and see the magical Queen Mary's Dolls' House .  Subject to the opening terms of the castle.

Then add mystery to your day with a special trip to Stonehenge, one of the wonders of the world. This ancient temple was built around 5,000 years ago , making it older than the pyramids of Egypt. It is classed as a World Heritage Site and thought to be a place of healing, as well as an astronomical clock and a religious site.

City of Bath

To complete your private tour you can then admire the heritage of the City of Bath boasting spectacular Georgian architecture, and more listed buildings than London. Here you can visit the ancient Roman Baths , built over 2,000 years ago. The Romans harnessed the hot local springs and were able to engineer a magnificent complex of plunge pools, steam rooms and saunas. Or you can enter the ancient Bath Abbey or the Jane Austin centre or you may wish to just shop in the amazing stores on offer or of course you may wish to relax in a traditional pub and watch the world pass by.

Alternative Tour Sights

This tour can be customised with alternative visits to the vibrant Salisbury Cathedral  church with Britain's tallest spire and best preserved Magna Carta,  Avebury (a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles), Hampton Court (a royal palace), or  Lacock Abbey & Village (picturesque streets and historic cottages featured in Pride & Prejudice & Harry Potter). Please note this means not adding but replacing one of the other sites.

Lunch and Notes

For lunch our tour guide will happily give you a number of options to choose from on the day. You may like to consider a  luxury picnic hamper  at Stonehenge which includes a variety of meats, cheeses, local breads, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, from just £50 per person (subject to availability and season). Please specify this upon your booking and we will take care of the rest.  Please note the guide will not guide you inside Windsor Castle or the Roman Bath House but will tell you all the history you need to know before you enter and how to navigate the site the best possible way and will then be waiting outside for you when you finish.  But the guide will fully guide you around the site of Stonehenge as well as give you a walking or driving tour around the City of Bath and Windsor.

A train journey from London typically takes over 2 hours, departing from either St Pancras or Paddington Stations with Great Western Rail, and arriving at Bath Spa.

Our second stop will be a scenic tour of the historic city of Bath, originally built as a place of well-being and relaxation by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. Home to the country’s only natural thermal hot springs, Bath is a delightful city where the ancient world is intertwined with threads of medieval and more recent Georgian history. Our scenic tour of Bath provides an excellent introduction to the major sights of this beautiful city, including Pulteney Bridge, The Assembly Rooms and Bath Abbey. Afterwards, you will visit the famous Roman Baths, home to Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs. The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the museum, holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
