Sam MacPherson Concert Review: A Candid College Kickback

With only an acoustic guitar and simple stage lighting, Sam MacPherson brought his soulful touch to the Roadrunner Boston on Nov. 5. A native eastcoaster from Red Bank, N.J., MacPherson opened for Jeremy Zucker’s “Is Nothing Sacred?” Tour, perfectly complimenting the music of this indie star.

MacPherson’s set was sure to please both new and diehard fans, with music ranging from from his most popular hit singles to unreleased songs. The night started with crowd favorites, including “Safe to Say” and “Crash Course.”

The audience also gained insight into the personal story behind “Last Minute,” one of his most-streamed pieces: After years of an on-and-off relationship that started in high school, the song details a climactic love confession just before MacPherson is about to move across the country to Los Angeles.

Interspersed between songs, MacPherson also took the time to shout out two special guests in the crowd.

“If you hear a tall, deep, burley, Scottish accent over there in the corner, those are my two best friends from college that are here,” said MacPherson.

In a way, the simplistic stage — void of excess lighting, instruments, and effects — effectively mimicked the environment where MacPherson started producing music; any listener could envision him bringing a simple college dorm room to life with relatable lyrics and the hum of his guitar.

sam macpherson tour

Near the end of the set, MacPherson decided to pay tribute to his college musical self-discovery by singing “Thinkin Bout You” by Frank Ocean. Not only was this one of MacPherson’s favorite songs, but the initial spark that launched him into a career as a singer-songwriter.

“I remember sitting in that dorm room and finding this song and this artist…It’s the first artist that made me want to write music of my own, and songs of my own, and become an artist of my own,” said MacPherson. “So, I thought I’d play that song for you — hopefully you’re a fan of Frank Ocean.”

This reflective moment was especially memorable because it preceded a song that wasn’t his own — emphasizing the power of gaining inspiration from other artists.

To finish off his performance, MacPherson gifted the audience with a performance of his unreleased single entitled, “I Don’t Want to See You Try.” Before performing, MacPherson left the audience with a solemn, yet hopeful message about mental health and verbalizing our love for one another.

“This song is about a dark moment in my life. It’s about the time that someone that I loved told me that they weren’t sure if they wanted to be alive anymore, and they were going through a lot, and they were really struggling with their mental health. And I didn’t, at the time, know what to say,” said MacPherson

As he sang with lyrics full of pure vulnerability, MacPherson reflected on his past faults as well as his plans and hopes to be more vocal in his love and support for others.

“This song, even though it was a dark moment, had become a reminder to me,” said MacPherson, “and hopefully to you after I play it, to call the people you love and tell them that you love them.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sam MacPherson Talks Tour and Powerlines

Taylor Alexis Heady

It’s ‘Safe To Say,’ we are in love with  Sam MacPherson ‘s music… see what we did there? Since we’re such big fans of his work, we felt extremely lucky to be able to chat with the singer all about his upcoming EP,  Powerlines , and his headlining tour!

The tour kicks off in Washington, D.C., on April 17 and wraps up in LA on May 19.

sam macpherson tour

“I am going on my first ever headline tour!! what the fuh!!” he said in an Instagram post about the tour.

You can grab your tickets here !

On top of that, his 8-song EP Powerlines drops on April 14, just in time for tour. We can’t wait to listen to this EP on repeat! Pre-save the EP here .

“Objectively speaking, we’re all connected by powerlines, however, they’re not the only reason you’re connected to another person, a large group of people, or humanity itself. As you get older, you realize we’re more alike than different because we’re connected by things like falling in love.” Sam MacPherson

Read our chat with the New Jersey native below!

Congrats on your first headlining tour! What’s one thing about headlining that you’re most looking forward to? Thank you! Live music is my favorite kind of music, so I’m just excited for everything that tour will be. The playing, the meeting people, it’s pure joy to me.

Is there anything you can reveal about what’s on the setlist? How did you decide on it? I’ll say I think the setlist will be pretty dynamic. Up, down, happy, sad – there will be something for everyone.

Is there a certain song you think will surprise fans live or will be a fan-fave on tour? I’m thinking ‘Powerlines.’ It’s just so fun to play.

What are your must-haves on the road? Water always, headphones and my laptop for movies, and some good company.

sam macpherson tour

What story do you want your upcoming EP to tell? Did you have a certain direction you wanted it to take when you started recording? I wanted to tell the stories that I’ve carried with me for quite [some] time now and just haven’t shared yet. Writing this record felt like I was documenting the past, getting some stuff off my chest, and looking towards the future all in one. In terms of direction, I just put my head down and wrote for a good six months and followed the songs.

How did ‘Safe To Say’ start? What was the writing process like? I brought a voice memo chorus melody to my brother in life and music Adam Yaron, who produced most of this EP. We just sat and talked for an hour or two about how we were feeling at the moment. One of us said, “Safe to say it’s all downhill from here, right?” and we were off.

Which song are you most proud of on Powerlines ? I’m really proud of all of the songs. ‘Maggie Will’ is always going to be a special song to me.

What are some of your favorite sounds, i.e. certain instruments, harmonies, etc.? What are you drawn to in music? I guess it’d depend on how I’m feeling, but as a general rule, I’m drawn to music that has any type of depth – emotional, lyrical, sonic. I don’t really care, I just love music that has the ability to bring you somewhere or make you feel something.

sam macpherson tour

What would you tell a younger version of yourself about doing music now that you’re heading out on a headlining tour? Considering I didn’t know I could play music or sing until I was 20, I would go back and give younger me a heads-up much sooner.

Who inspires you as a live performer? Who was your first concert? John Mayer inspires me as a performer, and so does Bruce Springsteen. The Rolling Stones were my first concert at MetLife.

Is there anything else you’d love for fans to know ahead of the tour? With the EP coming out right before tour, there will be a ton of new songs to play and experience live, and [I] just can’t wait to see everyone at these shows!

Stay up-to-date with Sam MacPherson so you don’t miss a thing as he embarks on his headlining tour! You don’t wanna miss adding his electric new EP to your spring and summer playlists, either. Don’t forget to grab your tickets and stream his most recent releases now!

What date will you be going to on the Powerlines Tour? Let us know on Twitter @thehoneypop , or in the comments below!

Sam MacPherson on new EP ‘Powerlines,’ upcoming tour

“Last Minute” went viral on TikTok and skyrocketed Sam MacPherson into fame. Now, he talks about his new EP and headlining tour.

Sam MacPherson was one of the many artists who had a song go viral on TikTok during the pandemic, with “Last Minute” reaching nearly 20 million streams on Spotify. He’s a New Jersey native whose songwriting evokes the emotional lows of breakups and crooked apologies.

“Powerlines,” his eight-song EP, is out today and will be followed by a headlining tour across North America. MacPherson sat down with us ahead of the album’s release to discuss his songwriting process, reluctance to make music for TikTok, and love of Bruce Springsteen.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

WSN: You’ve opened for Jake Scott, Chelsea Cutler and The Brook & The Bluff. What did these different experiences teach you about yourself and your music as a live act?

MacPherson : A lot of the opening stuff I did was just me and an electric guitar. It was nice that I played for a lot of people, and I was able to communicate the songs as intended, because that’s what I’m always hoping for when I’m writing. Being able to go out and battle test them was nice.

It’s really nice opening for people because you just kind of show up and it’s their crowd and their show — all of the logistics are taken care of. I just walk on stage and sing my little songs and go about my day. Obviously, there’s a little bit more than that, and there’s still a lot of work that goes into it. Now, going on my own tour, it’s wild how much logistical work there is. It’s definitely nice to open for people, but at the same time, I’m very grateful to do my own thing now.

WSN : You’re a coveted performer, but you’re also a highly sought-after songwriter for other artists. How do you decide whether to keep a song for yourself or share it with another artist?

MacPherson : A lot of the songs I’ve written for other people have been when I’m in the room with them. It is a lot easier than writing a song by myself, saying, “Eh, this is really not me,” and then bringing it to someone. If I’m writing for me, if I can’t finish the song, it’s usually not good enough.

I’ve fought for songs for a week, or a day, or a year or two years, and just really felt there was something there and there wasn’t. That makes it easy in that if songs are not for me, I just won’t finish. It’s not terribly difficult for me to decide what sounds like me.

WSN : With the huge success of “Last Minute,” do you find yourself changing your songwriting style to suit TikTok?

MacPherson : No, I don’t. At least in my mind, the songs have the ability to outlast the attention span of the internet. When I’m writing songs, I’m just looking to create something that, one, was not there before, and two, can somehow last forever. Those are the parameters that I work in — in terms of songwriting. Everything that happens after that, in terms of promotion and marketing and whatever, is always exclusively an afterthought. I hope it stays that way forever — for me, for everyone, for the sake of music and art.

WSN : Have you ever regretted putting so much of your heart out on display, having so much vulnerability?

MacPherson : I have not regretted it yet. Who knows? Maybe. I mean, time is the test that I put all of these songs up against because it’s one of the truest metrics in terms of how I feel about it, how other people will feel about it, what it means to me and how that changes. I don’t regret any of it yet. We’ll see, I guess.

WSN : What are some of the biggest musical influences from your childhood that you still listen to today?

MacPherson : I’m still going back to The Beatles, because they’re the best band ever and have some of the most iconic, prolific, beautiful, genius songwriting. And I’m still going back to more contemporary artists like Frank Ocean — I’m still going back to “Channel Orange” and “Blonde.” And then Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life” is always among my most listened-to albums of the year.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Catfish and The Bottlemen lately. I don’t know where they went. But they’re with me, I guess — I’m holding on to them. The songs from my childhood are still floating around. My dad has been trying to get me to listen to John Prine more recently, because he’s an amazing songwriter, so I’ve been doing that. And Bruce Springsteen has slowly crept in. I’m kind of in like a two-and-a-half-year Bruce moment — maybe the first Bruce moment of my life. Yeah, that’s kind of where I’m at listening-wise.

WSN : How did you decide to title the “Powerlines” EP? Was it inspired by growing up in New Jersey?

MacPherson : The idea of power lines is that we are connected — and that I am connected — to all of these moments and people, feelings, relationships and ideas, that we think are either fleeting or that we’ve left in the past. Somehow, we always find a way to feel connected to them or are brought back to them. A lot of that is me still feeling connected to New Jersey, and at the same time, feeling far away.

I think it’s hard to not let the weird pandemic era of everyone’s lives poison the water a little bit. That can be in terms of how you view things during that time or even now thinking about how that impacted you. You know, everybody was alone. Everybody was trying to feel connected or trying to reconcile themselves to the fact that they didn’t appreciate how connected everyone was before the pandemic.

WSN : What do you hope listeners will feel while listening to the EP?

MacPherson : Mostly just something. I’ve tried to be as honest as I can in the songs and how I feel about the context of the moments, the emotions, and the people in every song. At least in my mind, art isn’t supposed to be superimposed on someone’s own experience. People are supposed to pack it in their lunchboxes and take it home and then decide what it means to them later — or just leave it on a shelf or whatever it is.

I’m just hoping that people give it that chance — take it home or with them on the L — and just know that it could mean something to them. I think that’s really all I can do: explain what it means to me, present what it means to me, and then let Part B after that happen naturally. Because I think that’s how the best relationships happen with music, people, whatever.

LIVE REVIEW: Sam MacPherson opens Ruel’s 4th Wall Tour at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles, CA

LIVE REVIEW: Sam MacPherson opens Ruel’s 4th Wall Tour at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles, CA

Originally from Red Bank, New Jersey, singer-songwriter Sam MacPherson is now a Los Angeles resident, but his love for his home state is made manifest in his EP, Powerlines , released this April on Elektra Records. This past Friday, July 7, fans at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles were treated to a set that featured several songs from the EP. It was the final night of the North American leg of Ruel’s 4th Wall Tour; MacPherson had joined Ruel for a run of shows stretching from New York, to Vancouver, and finally wrapping up in Los Angeles.

To a room of a few thousand people, MacPherson joked about the show being an intimate setting. As he taught the crowd the chorus to “How To Dress For The Rain”, his performance certainly felt intimate and personal – thanks to his own knack for connecting listeners through song. Before the set finished, MacPherson treated the crowd to a brand new, unreleased song, called “SNAKEBITE”. “This song’s about falling in love and being scared of it… and realizing that if the thing we’re scared of the most is love, it’s a pretty good deal,” he offered. It was a comforting statement, and just the type of thing it seemed many needed to hear.
