Donald Fagen Denies ‘Ridiculous’ Claim About Why Aimee Mann Was Dropped From Steely Dan Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Donald Fagen has denied Aimee Mann ’s claim that she was dropped as the opening act for Steely Dan ’s new tour because, as she speculated, “they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter.”

In a statement to Rolling Stone , Fagen explained, “Well, first of all, the idea that I would make any decision based on the gender of a performer is ridiculous. That’s something that would never even occur to me.”

Fagen also noted that female singer-songwriters like Phoebe Snow and Rickie Lee Jones had served as opening acts for Steely Dan in the past.

On Instagram Wednesday, Mann, a self-professed Dan fan, posted a comic strip about being dropped from the Steely Dan tour; when the trek was announced, both Mann and Snarky Puppy were enlisted as the opening act, replacing Steve Winwood.

“I was supposed to open for Steely Dan this summer. I just found out that they took me off the bill,” Mann wrote in the captions of the comic. “No one is entirely sure why, but it seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter? As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100% love, with no reservations, so it really sucks. But you know what? People are allowed to not like you, for whatever reason.”

However, Fagen explained Thursday, “ There was a communication problem on our end. I was misinformed as to how firm the commitment was to any particular opening act. And, although I have the greatest respect for Aimee as a writer and performer, I thought it might not be the best matchup in terms of musical style.”

Fagen also apologized to Mann for the miscommunication, adding, “But I can’t pass the buck. I’ll take the blame for the screwup. I apologize for any distress this has caused Aimee and her fans.”

A rep for Mann told Rolling Stone of the Steely Dan situation, “Her illustration says it all.” Mann seemed to take the screwup in good spirit, joking on Twitter Wednesday night — prior to Fagen’s statement — “All is forgiven if Donald just tells me what ‘ Brooklyn ‘ is about.” The singer will also embark on her own headlining tour next month.

First Steve Winwood, Now Aimee Mann Off Steely Dan Tour

steely dan tour 2022 opening act

Aimee Mann in 2021 (Photo via her Facebook page)

Aimee Mann is the second performer to reveal in recent months that she’s no longer serving as an opening act for Steely Dan’s 2022 tour. The singer-songwriter, best known for the hit single, “Voices Carry,” with her band ‘Til Tuesday, revealed on March 16 that she had been dropped from the tour. “I just found out they took me off the bill. It seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter,” she wrote. Mann’s announcement follows the Feb. 1 news from Steve Winwood that he would no longer be part of the Steely Dan bill. Their pairing was originally planned for 2020 and was first moved to 2021 and subsequently to spring and summer of this year.) Winwood’s brief announcement cited “unforeseen circumstances.”

In a four-panel comic strip that Mann posted to her Instagram , she wrote, “As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100% love, with no reservations, so it really sucks.”

“There was a communication problem on our end,” he added. “I was misinformed as to how firm the commitment was to any particular opening act. And, although I have the greatest respect for Aimee as a writer and performer, I thought it might not be the best matchup in terms of musical style.

“But I can’t pass the buck. I’ll take the blame for the screwup. I apologize for any distress this has caused Aimee and her fans.”

Mann told Variety that she accepted Fagen’s explanation for the “screwup” which occurred when Winwood announced that he was pulling out of the tour.

“He probably didn’t even know what stage it was in, something I can easily see happening,” she said.

“I totally disagree about the style thing, though. I know so many people who are fans of mine and fans of theirs, and way more women than were fans in the ’70s. It’s not as segmented as it used to be.”

Steely Dan and Winwood toured together before, as recently as 2016. It would have been a welcome return to the stage for Winwood, who hasn’t  performed since he played a handful of dates in 2019. The veteran musician will turn 74 on May 12, just one week before he was to begin the tour.

Steely Dan, still continuing as Donald Fagen’s touring band, have significantly expanded the Earth After Hours tour of North American amphitheaters since it was originally announced. It lists Snarky Puppy as opening act through June 19.

Tickets for the 2022 tour can be purchased  here .

From the tour’s original Jan. 15, 2020, announcement: Steely Dan was formed by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen nearly five decades ago and has captivated millions of fans for years with a unique fusion of jazz-rock. The Grammy award-winning group became renowned for their multifaceted, one-of-a-kind horn and guitar arrangements on singles like “Reelin’ In The Years,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Dirty Work,” “Do It Again,” and a slew of others.

Becker died in 2017.

Great double bill !!

melf

Yes,! it was great double bill. Steve Winwood decides unforeseen circumstances is the reason. I have had tix since 2020. Most disappointing. Like to see the whole combo, hope Steely Dan’s promoters have some else up their sleeve?

6 March 2022

IF 2022 was a washout for Steve Winwood in 2022, will he join STEELY DAN in 2023 ? Will I be able to EXCHANGE my Tickets of 2 years waiting to the NEW DATE in 2023 ?

Harlan

Kiss and make up and go on tour together.

Da Mick

The double bill of Steely Dan with Winwood is a powerful combination tgat would no doubt draw ticket buyers for both acts. As wonderful as she is, it’s doubtful that Aimee Mann would have that kind of double bill drawing power, and would be relegated to a more traditional ooening act status, albeit a very cool opening act that I’d like to see. That’s the only possible reason i can think of why Fagen would have such an accomplished songwriter/musician bumped from the bill. It’s the audience’s loss. But still one has to ask who has the stature of Winwood that wouldn’t want to be a headliner themselves?

K-inetic

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I would have only gone to see that show FOR Aimee and/or Steve Winwood.

Steely Dan is just….so…basic. I’ve been hearing them for 40 years. And my impression has been the same for 40 years. Basic. Repetitive. Redundant.

“Rikki…” is their only commendable song. Every other one just sounds like another iteration of all the others. They should have been opening for Aimee.

MST66

Could not disagree more. SD live is an incredible evening guaranteed. I love all three acts but Steely Dan has a large first class catalog.

Oliver

I’ve seen Steely Dan so many times over the years dating back to 1974 that people will no longer go with me. Having Steve Winwood join the tour was my reason to go one last time. Funny thing is I now enjoy the Steely Damned 2 more than Steely Dan itself. More intimate setting and a better eclectic mix of songs. Hope you all enjoy it but I have to bow out this year.

greg chick

I consider that Stevie Winwood dumped US. I have waited 2 yrs. I have 2 4th. row center tix. I paid big bucks for! Now on May 21st. I find the switch! What a bad trip. I am very very disappointed.

cmeride79

Greg Chick – my heart sunk in that very same boat. I was stunned when all of a sudden Winwood’s name just disappeared from the bill. I’ve been digging for a reason ever since. I’m still *Buyin’ the Thrill* of seeing Steely Dan live; though now I’m just counting on Walter Becker’s spirit to be conspicuous in place of his cherished presence. More than a jagged little pill to swallow. Fortunate for all that Fagan’s electric, larger-than-life persona will swing that show right into its Countdown to Ecstasy ~ and get us there on cue. I def got a bit sideways just *seeing* name like “Snarky Puppy” pop up on the bill one day – I mean, WhoTF? That’s when I had to reassure myself that as long as I know they’re Faganized – i.e., a Steely Dan seal of approval – that’s good enough for me. One of history’s most prolific, versatile, inventive and light-years- ahead-of-the-scene ‘geniusician’ [yes, Donald Fagan] would never be down to be billed with any less than at least a good mesh for his incredible, lofty standards. You with me, Dr. Wu? ⭐

The Nightfly

I love jazz, but to say that a jazz guitar instrumental trio, which is what (for now) has replaced Aimee Mann is a better match is just weird. I wanted to see Stevie Winwood, COVID blew that. Put Snarky Puppy on the bill in Mansfield on July 2nd, not a jazz guitarist.

Steely Dan Drop Aimee Mann From Opening Slot on 2022 Tour

Aimee Mann won't be opening for Steely Dan this summer, though "no one is entirely sure why."

Mann, who initially rose to fame with 'Til Tuesday, broke the news in a four-panel cartoon on Instagram then followed the drawing with several Twitter replies.

Steve Winwood was initially paired with Steely Dan for these dates but was replaced by Mann and Snarky Puppy in February. Snarky Puppy are still set for shows in May and early June, while Mann was to have taken over on June 21 through July 3.

Mann suggested that she was dropped because "their audience wouldn't like a female singer-songwriter," but Donald Fagen refuted that in an official statement.

"Well, first of all, the idea that I would make any decision based on the gender of a performer is ridiculous," Fagen said. "That's something that would never even occur to me." His statement notes that Steely Dan has previously toured with both Rickie Lee Jones and the late Phoebe Snow.

"As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100 percent love, with no reservations, so it really sucks," Mann added. "But you know what? People are allowed to not like you, for whatever reason."

Steely Dan are touring behind Northeast Corridor , their first live album in 25 years. The LP arrived last September on the same day as Donald Fagen 's The Nightfly Live . Ticketmaster no longer lists Mann as the tour's opening act, though a few websites for individual venues have not yet been updated.

"I love Steely Dan," Mann told Forbes later in 2021, "and to me, Steely Dan has an enormous amount of feeling that I feel like nobody ever gives them credit for. There's an enormous amount of feeling. The characters are sad, and pathetic, and despairing, and drug addicts, mostly involved in these terrible dead-end relationships. What's not to like?"

Fagen took responsibility for what he described as a miscommunication with Mann. "I was misinformed as to how firm the commitment was to any particular opening act," he said in the official statement. "And, although I have the greatest respect for Aimee as a writer and performer, I thought it might not be the best matchup in terms of musical style. But I can't pass the buck. I'll take the blame for the screwup. I apologize for any distress this has caused Aimee and her fans."

Mann referenced Steely Dan's famously inscrutable lyrics in a separate tweet about her departure, specifically mentioning " Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) " from Can't Buy a Thrill : "All is forgiven if Donald just tells me what 'Brooklyn' is about."

Steely Dan drops opening act from Syracuse concert: ‘No one is entirely sure why’

Steely Dan no longer has an opening act booked for its upcoming concert at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview.

The jazz rock band is scheduled to perform at the St. Joe’s Amp in Syracuse on Thursday, June 23. Aimee Mann was scheduled to open the show at 7:30 p.m., but has been quietly removed from Live Nation’s ticketing website .

“No one is entirely sure why,” Mann wrote on Instagram Wednesday, “but it seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter?”

“As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100% love, with no reservations, so it really sucks,” she added.

Mann is an Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter who first rose to fame with the new wave band ‘Til Tuesday, hitting the top 10 with “Voices Carry” in 1985. She’s won two Grammy Awards for her solo work, which includes the songs “Save Me” and “Wise Up” from the 1999 film “Magnolia.”

Mann was booked to replace Steve Winwood as Steely Dan’s opening act last month after the “Higher Love” singer said he was “no longer able to appear due to unforeseen circumstances.” It’s unclear if Mann will be replaced, or if Steely Dan will go on without an opening act.

No opening act is also listed for Steely Dan’s concerts June 21 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs) and July 3 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Snarky Puppy is scheduled to support earlier dates on the tour, but not after June 19.

Mann and the Donald Fagen-led band became trending topics on social media Wednesday and Thursday as fans and fellow artists weighed in.

“Aimee opened for us, and I’m so glad to say our audience loved that s---. I was very much honored she’d do it,” Jason Isbell said on Twitter . “My wife (Amanda Shires) hates Steely Dan. I have discussed that with Aimee Mann, who truly loves Steely Dan. Now I’ll never again try to convince my wife that Steely Dan is good.

Donald Fagen Apologizes to Aimee Mann and Fans for ‘Screwup’ in Dropping Her From Steely Dan Tour

Mann tells Variety she accepts his explanation but, when it comes to him saying it wasn't "a great matchup" musically, she says, "I totally disagree about the style thing."

Donald Fagen Sorry About 'Screw-Up' in Dropping Aimee Mann From Tour

Donald Fagen has responded to Aimee Mann on the matter of her being dropped from the opening slot on Steely Dan ‘s summer tour, saying that it was a decision he made because he “thought it might not be the best matchup in terms of musical style.” He also apologized for making the decision after Mann had already been announced and advertised for the tour, saying he didn’t realize it had gotten that far.

The Steely Dan frontman did rebuff Mann’s suggestion — which had been stated with a question mark — that she’d heard suggestions the Dan camp didn’t think a female singer-songwriter was suitable for the tour.

“Well, first of all,” Fagen says in a statement provided to Variety , “the idea that I would make any decision based on the gender of a performer is ridiculous. That’s something that would never even occur to me.”

Fagen continues, “There was a communication problem on our end. I was misinformed as to how firm the commitment was to any particular opening act. And, although I have the greatest respect for Aimee as a writer and performer, I thought it might not be the best matchup in terms of musical style.

Popular on Variety

“But I can’t pass the buck,” he adds. “I’ll take the blame for the screwup. I apologize for any distress this has caused Aimee and her fans.”

Steely Dan reps point out the group has had solo female artists open for the group before, including Rickie Lee Jones and the late Phoebe Snow.

Mann had been previously been announced as opening Steely Dan’s shows from June 21 through July 3, with Snarky Puppy picking up that slot in earlier dates on the tour. Snarky Puppy’s opening appearances remain on the schedule; no replacement for Mann on the later dates has been announced.

Mann tells Variety that she accepts Fagen’s explanation of what went down, and that it seems plausible he didn’t know she’d already been officially announced back on Feb. 1. “He probably didn’t even know what stage it was in, something I can easily see happening,” she says.

“I totally disagree about the style thing, though. I know so many people who are fans of mine and fans of theirs, and way more women than were fans in the ’70s. It’s not as segmented as it used to be. People are thinking more of an approach to songwriting than the styles — jazz-influenced versus folk-influenced. Anyway, I still love them, and he owes me that explanation of Brooklyn.”

That last bit refers back to a tweet Mann posted Wednesday night, where she wrote, “All is forgiven if Donald just tells me what Brooklyn is about,” referring to the song “Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me),” the meaning of which has puzzled many fans over the decades.

The news of Mann being dropped came via an illustration that the performer posted to her Instagram account, with captions revealing her uncertainty over why she’d been dropped. “No one is entirely sure why,” she wrote, “but it seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter? … As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100% love, with no reservations, so it really sucks. … But you know what? People are allowed to not like you, for whatever reason.” An additional thought bubble reads: “Good luck to all bands.”

When first contacted by Variety Thursday night, Mann said she really wasn’t clear what Fagen or his camp belatedly decided was wrong for the tour, but she added, “I guess we’ll know more when they announce my replacement!”

So far, there’s no sign of a fill-in for Mann on the tour dates, which have a blank space on Steely Dan’s website where Snarky Puppy is listed under the earlier shows. Both artists had been substitutes, in a sense, announced a month and a half ago after the previously co-billed Steve Winwood dropped off the tour.

People who consider themselves fans of both artists took to social media Thursday and today to indicate their distress over the axing of what they considered an ideal double-bill. Fellow artist Jason Isbell wrote, ““Aimee opened for us, and I’m so glad to say our audience loved that shit. I was very much honored she’d do it. … My wife (Amanda Shires) hates Steely Dan. I have discussed that with Aimee Mann, who truly loves Steely Dan. Now I’ll never again try to convince my wife that Steely Dan is good.”

STEELY DAN & STEVE WINWOOD PUSH SUMMER RUN TO 2022

STEELY DAN & STEVE WINWOOD PUSH SUMMER RUN TO 2022

Steely Dan has rolled out its rescheduled 2022 dates with Steve Winwood . The arwice-rescheduled 2021 summer tour, which was to run throughout June and July, will now play over six weeks in 2022, kicking off on May 20th in Portland, Oregon's Veterans Memorial Coliseum and wrapping on July 3rd at Bethel, New York's Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

Donald Fagen explained a while back that Steely Dan was actually one of the most unlikely bands to gain traction on the road: “We actually ended up as a touring band by accident, really. I'm talking about my partner Walter Becker and I. Certainly I became a frontman by accident, I know that. We just couldn't find a singer that we felt could convey the attitude we we're looking for. And it became obvious that I was probably the one to do it, even though I had very little experience. Our model for songs was more literary or short story-like than being a model from popular music.”

Although Steve Winwood still tackles his own solo theater dates, we asked him if he's at all worried that his solo gigs will be overlooked after becoming the go-to-guy opening act for such A-list peers as Rod Stewart , Santana , Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers , and Steely Dan: “It's interesting. Y'know, I think there's something to be said for both. And then of course before that I was out with the Tom Petty tour, which was a success. But I think it was . . . I think it worked in conjunction with my shows. I wouldn't like to think that that was the only thing I was doing. I still like the idea of doing my shows as well. So, I think it sort of broadens the view of my music, I should think.”

Lol, it’s not Skinny Puppy, it’s Snarky Puppy.

' src=

Thanks, will correct.

Boy, I wish it was Skinny Puppy. That would be hilarious to be in that audience. I’ve seen both Skinny and Steely numerous times – that Venn diagram doesn’t even REMOTELY overlap. Got tickets to see the Dan tonight in Richmond. Was bummed about both Winwood and Mann being cancelled, but oh well.

REVIEW + PHOTOS: Steely Dan w/ Dave Stryker Trio at The Mahaffey Theater (July 23)

by Spencer Storch • July 24, 2022

It’s not often your dreams come true. You hope and you pray but sometimes things just don’t work out how you want. But, that’s not the case for me this week. My hopes and prayers have landed me the profound privilege of attending one of the greatest soft-rock bands of all time, Steely Dan. Founded in 1971 by guitarist Walter Becker (1950-2017) and keys player Donald Fagen (1948-present), Steely Dan has been thrilling their fans for more than 50 years! This jazz/rock ensemble has assembled for a huge tour that includes seven stops in Florida! Tonight is the second in that series, taking place at the majestic Mahaffey Theater in gorgeous downtown St. Petersburg.

The Mahaffey Theater is simply stunning. The European box style theater seating is as beautiful as the waterfront views of Tampa Bay. Opened in 1965, the theater can hold just over 2,000 patrons for its concerts and ballroom events.

This evening’s opening act is the Dave Stryker Trio. Stryker is an acclaimed jazz guitarist who plays with an edge. His three piece band gets the crowd warmed up in a jiff with the jazziest version of The Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone.” Fast paced and abstract they tantalize the theater with technique before dropping into a blues number. They finish their way-too-short thirty minute set with Curtis Mayfield’s “Pusherman” with “Eleanor Rigby” teases in the jam odyssey. What an opening set!

After a short intermission, I return to my seat and get ready for a dreamy set from the legendary Steely Dan. The lights come up and the band begins with a rousing jazz number that stirs the room. Only once they had worked us into a lather did Fagen join the party. His keys are set right up front and in the middle and rightly so as he is the only remaining original member. They waste no time getting into the hits as we crack into the iconic, “Hey Nineteen.” It’s here that Jim Pugh struts his stuff with a big solo on the trombone. Next up is “Black Cow” and once again Pugh stands out. Close on his heels is guitarist Jon Herington. I can’t say enough about the talent all the way around in this group. Holding down every beat with perfection is Keith Carlock on the drums. This man is a machine! From here they move into “Kid Charlemagne,” a song that Kanye West sampled for his song “Champion.”

Fagen takes back the spotlight playing a song from his ‘82 album Night Fly. Now standing, he dances around the stage in his black sunglasses. Then he grabs a melodica and helps play his synth heavy jazz number. All of a sudden, the lights drop low and the drums begin to rumble. The keys twinkle playfully but frantically adding to the strangeness. Every instrument adds to the intensity of the moment before the entire band crescendos and we splash into “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number.” The crowd cheers with delight! Not only is the music impressive, but the lights have been incredible all night long. Backup singers Catherine Russell and La Tanya Hall receive whistles and applause as they take turns slaying the verses of “Dirty Work.” Trumpeter Michael Leonhart has the last word of the evening with a capitol solo that “Any Major Dude Will Tell You” was simply amazing.

They cap off my amazing night with a stellar performance of “Reelin’ In The Years.” Herington simply sizzles on guitar hitting all the right notes for the iconic solo before they let Carlock go nuts! All lights are on him as he ends the show with all the tricks in his bottomless bag. A standing ovation for Steely Dan! What a night! What a dream!

The Dave Stryker Trio Opening for Steely Dan's Summer Tour

The dave stryker trio opening for steely dan's summer tour.

steely dan tour 2022 opening act

This month, award-winning master guitarist and ArtistWorks jazz guitar instructor, Dave Stryker , will join the members of his trio as they open for legendary rock and jazz fusion band , Steely Dan , on their " Earth After Hours" summer tour . The tour’s twenty-five show series will run from late June through mid-August and will be held in cities throughout the eastern United States.

Comprised of critically acclaimed organist, Jared Gold, Grammy-nominated drummer, McClenty Hunter, and, of course, Dave on the guitar, the Dave Stryker Trio showcases an exciting mix of Dave’s original compositions as well as traditional jazz standards performed in a streamlined, three-piece context. With over 34 albums to his name as a bandleader and dozens more as a featured sideman, Dave has a near endless assortment of critically-acclaimed compositions in his repertoire, all of which set the stage beautifully for Steely Dan’s eclectic mix of jazz-inspired rock ‘n’ roll.

As with most traditional organ trios, Dave supplies a bulk of the melodic content while Jared performs walking bass lines and much of the supporting harmony on the organ. With McClenty providing a lush rhythmic foundation, the three artists create a progressive, yet simultaneously nostalgic, sound that’s both amazingly unique and comfortingly familiar.

“I am looking forward to hitting the road this summer opening up for one of my favorite bands, Steely Dan,” Dave expresses. “I’ll be joined by my long-time trio mates Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums. Hope to see you out there!”

Steely Dan is a Jazz fusion band led by founding members Donald Fagan and Walter Becker. They were one of the most prominent music acts of their time and despite the extreme saturation and trending of rock music, Steely Dan’s jazz inspired sound managed to breakthrough into the mainstream.

Though Steely Dan was not fully realized until 1972, the roots of the band trace back to 1968 when the core members, Fagan and Becker, first met at Bard College in New York. Fagan overheard Becker playing the electric guitar in a nearby cafe. Immediately impressed by his performance Fagan introduced himself and asked if he wanted to be in a band. The two shared similar tastes in music and ideas for strong constructions. They formed several bands in college one, which included Chevy Chase as the drummer.

The band played blues and rock cover songs by artists ranging from Willie Dixon to Moby Grape; however, they would focus more on their original compositions with their move to Brooklyn, New York in 1969. Fagan and Becker assumed various roles in the music industry contributing to the soundtrack of the Richard Pryor film “You’ve Got to Walk It Like You Talk It or You’ll Loose that Beat” and acting as touring members of the group Jay and the Americans.

Fagan and Becker eventually formed their own band and recruited the help of drummer Jim Hodder, singer David Palmer, and guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Considering Fagan and Becker were advent enthusiasts of the Beat Generation movement, they named their newly formed group after a reference to William S. Burroughs’ novel “Naked Lunch”.

Steely Dan initially struggled to find their footing in the recording studios, releasing the poorly received single “Dallas”; however that reputation quickly dissipated with the release of their 1972 debut album “Can’t Buy a Thrill”. This album housed the classic rock standards “Reelin’ in the Years”, which reached #11 on the Billboard singles charts and “Do It Again” which peaked at #6. The band followed this release with the critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful, “Countdown to Ecstasy”. This was the band’s first album without Palmer as lead vocalist. In addition to Fagan replacing Palmer as vocalist, Steely Dan also added future Doobie Brothers keyboardist Michael McDonald to the line up. The band put out another critical and commercial success with “Pretzel Logic” and made it to the #4 spot on the Billboard Charts with their hit single “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”.

After the release of “Pretzel Logic” Steely Dan abandoned touring and committed themselves completely to the studios. Fagan and Becker were utter perfectionist in recording sessions and would sometimes make their studio musicians play a total of 40 takes per track. As Fagan and Becker continued hiring incredibly talented studio musicians, the significance of the roles of the other members began to diminish and they would subsequently leave the band. Equipped with a diverse and highly competent set of studio musicians Steely Dan went on to record the most texturally elaborate and polished sounding albums of their career. 1977’s “Aja” was a landmark album for the band and a groundbreaking record for its time. This album raked in a number of accolades including two Grammys for Best Engineered Recording and Non-Classical album. The album was also immensely popular with the general public, reaching #5 on the US Charts and becoming one of the first American albums to be certified platinum. The album showcased the bands craft as innovative and complex songwriters and added validity to their reputation as masterminds in the studio. Aja also featured a long list of jazz aficionados such as saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Pete Christlieb and Tom Scott, guitarists Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour, and bassist Chuck Rainey (to name a few).

Steely Dan released their follow up to “Aja”, “Gaucho” 3 years later. Though the band endured personal, technical, and legal trouble during the album’s production, it ended up being another major success. Steely Dan’s next studio album would not be released until 20 years after “Gaucho”. Their long awaited comeback album, “Two Against Nature” dominated at the Grammy Awards, taking home Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal, and Album of the year. Steely Dan recorded yet another album entitled “Everything Must Go” and supported it with an extensive tour. The band’s “Two Against Nature” tour would be the band’s first time on the road since the ‘70s. Steely Dan continued touring well through out the 2000s and even did a tour in 2013 where they played “Aja” in its entirety.

Live reviews

Steely Dan’s music was definitely a new sound to people when the band started playing in the early seventies and their musical style still holds its defining characteristics that make them so unique. They have the ability to mix the diverse elements of jazz, funk, and rock into one musical style and make it sound cool and smooth.

When performing live Steely Dan does an excellent job presenting their signature style of laid-back music that allows the audience to sit back, relax, and take in the smooth breeze of their music. Donald Fagen is highly responsible for delivering the chilled vibe that we all love so much about Steely Dan’s music. Fagen is the driving force behind the catchy chord progressions ,which he smoothly plays on the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano and the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Fagen also has a polished, pristine voice that he delivers with much clarity over the jazz-funk rhythms of the music. Walter Becker also adds much of the edge to the sound with the jazz like scales he plays on his guitar. Steely Dan’s sound has a loose feel to it and while at one of their concerts you can see them present this style in a free-form kind of way. Steely Dan is also able to get a full sound by having a backing band consisting of saxophone players that add to the smooth jazz element of the music, as well as having background vocalists that harmonize with each other to create a great depth to the performance. Steely Dan always looks cool and suave when they are on stage. The members wear sport jackets and ties, and sport dapper sunglasses. Their sound has garnered them much praise for their innovated style having already been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and having sold over 40 million albums.

You will always be thrown for a surprise when you see Steely Dan. Their rhythmic and melodic shifts are always changing in ways that captivate the audience and keep their toes tapping to the floor.

What a show! Steely Dan, known most for their studio albums was in rare form last night. I closed my eyes a couple of times (on purpose) and could not tell if I was listening to a CD or a live show. They were in top form, and the young ladies they chose to accompany them on stage could not have been better. They went through most of their most popular songs, but, intentionally or not, did none of their songs that had to do with Las Vegas. I tend to believe it was the former not the latter. But that's okay, considering the massive catalog they had to choose from. Now, on to the audience. What a bunch of dead heads! and I don't mean a Grateful Dead reference here. The show was not sold out, which surprised the hell out of me. There was rarely (if at all) a standing ovation given to a band that clearly deserved a few. But, all in all, I had a great night and would go to see them again in a heartbeat!By the way, I'm 64 and grew up listening to them. Just a point of reference for you all.

Occasionally I am quite proud that I am not so young anymore as it means I can say I have seen some bands that others might regard as legends. Steely Dan fits the bill here. It is difficult to remember a lot about the concert as I saw them back in the 1970s at Leeds University (a great place for gigs in those days and probably still is). I also saw the Doobie Brothers in the same year. I tend to group Steely Dan, Doobies and Eagles together (Eagles I didn't see until many years later). What I remember is a great gig, all the hits like "Do it Again," "Reeling in the Years," "Haitian Divorce."

Sorry I cn't recall much more, but what I do suggest is you check out their music as it is far from old-fashioned.

I am unsure if they are still around, but I am certain there is at least one tribute band! They are American rock with a jazz feel and in my opinion one of the best of that genre.

Okay, this review comes in two parts - a review of the band and a review of the SSE Wembley Arena.

The band. Brilliant musicians and they played magnificently. They go on a bit, though! And any Steely Dan set that omits Do It Again, Haitian Divorce, and Rikki Don't Lose that Number, is below par. Perhaps if they'd spent less time showing off (a drum solo for Chrissakes - who cares?!), they might have squeezed in another tune or two.

The Arena. I haven't been to Wembley Arena for many a year and was surprised to see how little has changed. I spent £95 each for two 'good' seats on the floor of the arena - easily the most expensive non-festival tickets I've ever bought - and they were dreadful. Almost impossible to see the whole stage with someone sitting in front. I would not return to Wembley unless it was a reincarnated David Bowie, supported by XTC and Kate Bush!

This concert began with fine, vintage music from the DOOBIE BROTHERS singing all of their hits from the '70s & '80s ... naturally, this stirred up good memories for those of us at JIFFY LUBE LIVE who are in our 50's & 60's! After the intermission, STEELY DAN (Donald Fagen and company) arrived on stage and began playing what I considered to be contemporary jazz tunes that did not cross over to the pop charts/American Top 40 ... . It is quite clear that Donald Fagen has not lost his supreme talent for music and for the selection of excellent, new band members; however, he seems to have forgotten his "old" fans in that he did not perform his top hits-"PEG" and "DO IT AGAIN" ... this sadden Me. Maybe, his band member, "Lord" Harrington, should tell him how many of Us love these vintage tunes ... .;)

I loved the Steely Dan concert I saw last Thursday! Donald Fagin was in fine form. he seemed looser than the last concert I saw him in at the Sony Centre in Toronto in 2015. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. The Rama Theatre Centre looked to be sold out and everyone there was adoring, especially me. His music resonates somewhere deep in my chest. Is that my soul?

I hadn't expected to find the concert so flawless considering half of the original team was missing with Walter Becker's death, but John Harrington proved to be a master guitarist!I did miss Walter Becker's vocals though. And didn't there used to be four Danettes?

I'm thrilled that Donald Fagan is still touring and I'll sign up to see the next one.

Gratefully I remain,

I should start by saying I have weird obsession with Steely Dan. They're the greatest band ever. "America greatest maybe rock non-band" in their own words. I really enjoyed the concert at the overture center in Madison. Their band for the Jamalot Ever After tour is really solid, and the sound quality was great. I've seen them a few times, and they're really starting to get over themselves and play what the people want to hear: the hits! There was a time when they wouldn't play Reelin in the Years live. They played it! They played almost all of my favorite songs. I would've liked it if they got into their deep cuts more, but you can't say no to one great tune after another.

First...I have never missed a Steely Dan concert!!

I was fortunate enough to win a trip to meet and see them in concert in London,England back in September 2000.

When I met Walter Becker and Donald Fagan at the Apollo Hammersmith in London back in 2000..It was a dream come true..meeting my all time favorite band. Talking with Walter..he was a cordial .great guy to talk to...like he was your next door neighbor..in fact If you had asked Walter to come over and mow your lawn..he was THAT nice and would probably do that. That trip of a lifetime I will ALWAYS remember..and meeting the two who formed Steely Dan! RIP Walter....

Saw Steely Dan with Doobie Brothers in Charlotte PNC pavilion. Had a good sized crowd there of people 4O to 80. The musicianship was excellent. I would have preferred some deep cuts from Steely Dan such as Doctor Woo, Pearl of the Quarter, or Razor Boy, but you can't have it all. I got in and out of the show in about 15 minutes. Beer is around 15 dollars, so I saw the show completely sober. I particularly liked the dance groove Green Flower Street and Natural Thing.

Oddly, the first time I knowingly heard Steely Dan (Reeling In The Years) I didn't like them. It wasn't until a few years later that I heard "Deacon Blues" on the radio and asked who that band was. When I learned it was Steely Dan I did an about face and began listening to their earlier works. After that I was hooked and they are now the only group that I have in their entirety on my iPhone songlist. By the way, I still don't like "Reeling In The Years".
