What you need to know about this Timisoara guided tour:
- This is a private walking tour of Timisoara available all year round. Duration about 3h, flexible starting time
- Learn about Timisoara's fascinating history also called 'Little Vienna' and visit its main sights and landmarks
- Walk through the city's main squares (Union, Victory, Liberty) and admire the restored Art Nouveau and Baroque architecture
- Pass by Timisoara's major landmarks and find out about their significance: Orthodox Cathedral, Opera Square, City Hall

Moments to expect during the Timisoara walking day trip:
Victory square.
Our starting point for this tour of Timisoara will be the splendid Art Nouveau inspired Victory Square, one of the most important hotspots in the city, centrally located. Did you know that Timisoara is the European Capital of Culture in 2023? I can tell you more about the city's plans!
Maria Theresia Bastion
This last-standing bastion was part of a defensive structure built 300 years ago by the Habsburg Empire in response to military technological advancements of those times (gun powder and cannons). What today seems trivial, in those times was considered state-of-the-art strategy and planning. Today, it's a cool place where the locals hang out and have fun.
Admire 'Little Vienna'
The city had a Vienna-inspired aristocratic life in the 18-19th century, with splendid, imperial looking buildings scattered all over its main squares. A superb mix of Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, I will show you the best spots in the city to admire what was once called 'Little Vienna' and tell you more about those times.
Enjoy a typical street snack
During our tour we'll also stop for a delicious treat: a street pastry or sweet desert, depending on your preference. I'll tell you a little about traditional Romanian food and typical cuisine in this region which blends Balkan, Hungarian and Romanian influences in its own way!

Reviews from travellers
Perfect tour with Alex, giving detailed and sophisticated explanations, always surprising and good transitions to the next topic :-) Highly recommended
On Sept 6, 2023 I met with Mark-Alex in mid-morning to begin our Walking Tour of Timisoara. I had just arrived in Timisoara the afternoon before, so I was just beginning to know the city when we met that morning. Mark-Alex is easy to engage with and very easy to have conversation with. We talked about many things during the tour and I asked many questions during our walk. So we had good back and forth discussion throughout the walk. Beginning the tour, we walked through and explored the three main squares (Victoria, Liberty, Union) of the city, St. George Square, Eugene Savoy Street and into the Maria Theresia Bastion area where Mark-Alex gave me plenty of background on how the Habsburg Empire made Timisoara into a fortress town after they had captured the town from the Ottomans in the early 1700's and how nobles like Eugene of Savoy were instrumental in this process. There was good focus on the history of the city, which I enjoyed. We then walked back through Union Square to explore some of the fabulous buildings and architecture located there. Near the end of the tour we walked out to the Piata 700 area to stop in and see the food and flower markets in this area and to try some ethnic foods and get a coffee. This was a nice ending to a very good tour. I felt very pleased with the outcome and I give Mark-Alex the credit for it.
The tour was very easy to book and extremely informative. In addition to providing a great overview of the city, our guide answered many questions and shared insightful information about the history, culture, modern-day living, and more — plus some excellent practical tips for our stay in Timisoara.
We had a great experience with Romanian Friend in Timisoara last week. I am planning our wedding in Timisoara this October and wanted to organise a short walking tour for our guests. With all my questions and queries Marius has been very patient and helpful. Whilst visiting this February we met with Alex-Mark our guide who took us on a private tour of the city. He was able to share is wealth of knowledge and experience to give us a interesting, historical and fun tour. Thank you for a great experience we can't wait to see you again in October! Isabelle and Dorin
Alex was wonderful. He was flexible and very attentive. He gave us a great tour of the city and taught us many things about the city. Even though my wife is actually from there, she even learned some about her own history. This was a very good company and Alex was a very good guide. I am looking at Romanian Friend for other tours while we are staying in this country
Highly recommended. Our guide Alex was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic in talking about the history of Timisoara. We enjoyed the walk through Timisoara's past!
The tour was great. Alex had incredible knowledge about his hometown of Timisoara and delivered in it a fun and easy to understand way. He kept it interesting with little fun bits of information and you could really tell he loves his job. Two hours was barely enough. Also thanks to Romanian Friend for setting up the tour in very little time - on the evening for next morning!
Without doubt the most interesting part of my visit to Romania was taking a guided walking tour of Timisoara, and I would strongly recommend Romanian Friend’s tour. Marius from Romanian Friend was incredibly helpful overall with planning my trip to Romania, and also in connecting me with the historical encyclopaedia that is Mark-Alex, a local resident and tour guide. During his walking tour I learnt so much about not only Timisoara and Romania, but also Europe’s history; and how the city played such a crucial part in that. This extensive and fascinating tour taught me more about European history than I ever learnt in school and Mark-Alex’s knowledge and enthusiasm for his home city was just staggering!

Palm Beach walking tour leader Rick Rose wins prestigious county tourism award
A Palm Beach institution known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the town's history has been honored for his contribution to local tourism.
Rick Rose , the bowtie-wearing leader of the Worth Avenue walking tours since 2011, on Thursday received the prestigious Providencia Award from Discover The Palm Beaches, the county's tourism marketing agency.
"Receiving the Providencia Award for me, personally, is the highest possible recognition of my life's work," Rose said Friday.
The announcement was made during Discover The Palm Beaches' Travel Rally Day celebration Thursday at Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach, where Discover also announced that Palm Beach County charted a record-breaking number of visitors for the first quarter of this year, with 2.8 million visitors. In addition to Rose's award, Discover presented its Partner of the Year Awards to The Ben Hotel and Visit Palm Beach.
Rose was born and raised in Palm Beach County, as was his mother, he said. And though he left the area for about 25 years, "This was always home for me."
Rose has dedicated his entire career to travel and tourism after receiving his degree in hospitality from Florida State University. "It honestly kind of puts a crown on my achievements," he said. "I couldn't think of another recognition anywhere that would be more heartwarming."
This is the 32nd year the award has been given to a local business, organization or person in recognition of their contributions to Palm Beach County's tourism industry.
In addition to the Worth Avenue walking tours, Rose wrote "Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America's Legendary Resort Town," and he co-owns and operates Palm Beach Vacation Rentals, which has 40 short-term rental properties in Palm Beach County.
Rose was chosen from a pool of applicants by a committee of local tourism industry leaders as one of three finalists, with the historian going head-to-head with PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens and developer Related Southeast and its CityPlace and Hilton projects in downtown West Palm Beach.
The winner was chosen by a popular vote, with votes cast online via the Providencia Award website. Rose said he was grateful to be considered alongside such prestigious organizations as Related Southeast and PGA National Resort. "They would have been very deserving," he said.
Rose is an esteemed member of Palm Beach County's tourism community, said Milton Segarra, president and chief executive of Discover The Palm Beaches.
"As a dedicated resident, historian, and author who has documented the rich history of 'America’s First Resort Destination,' he brings The Palm Beaches to life for visitors and other residents," Segarra said. "His thorough knowledge, distinct Palm Beach style, and overall contributions to our organization and to the larger community are invaluable, and we are proud to honor him as a strong tourism ambassador with the Providencia Award."
Winning the Providencia Award is a full-circle moment for Rose: His mentor and Worth Avenue walking tours predecessor James Ponce was the last individual to receive the award 10 years ago. Since Ponce's recognition, only organizations or groups have received the Providencia.
"We've got an unbelievable destination here," Rose said. "Really for me it's not just Palm Beach island, it's the whole county."
This was the second year in a row that the Providencia Award honored a person or organization based in Palm Beach. Last year's award went to The Colony Hotel.
The first winner of the Providencia was actor Burt Reynolds , who was raised in Palm Beach County and returned to the area in the 1970s, when he settled at a sprawling ranch in Jupiter Farms. Throughout his career, Reynolds brought film and television productions to the Palm Beaches.
The award was named after a Spanish ship that sank off the coast of Palm Beach in the 1880s. The vessel's cargo included tens of thousands of Trinidad coconuts, which the crew managed to bring on shore and plant — later inspiring the name, "Palm Beach."
