The bridge began construction in 2006 so vehicles could avoid a mountainous section of Agas-Agas that was prone to landslides during the rainy season. It was eventually finished in 2009. 

Two years later, a zipline facility was opened by the bridge to provide a fun experience for tourists. The twin zipline measured up to 880 meters from above the bridge to the riverbank below, making it one of the longest ziplines in the Philippines. However, the operations for the zipline were eventually halted, and the extreme sports facility has yet to reopen. 

Alto Peak towers at about 1,332 meters above sea level, making it one of the tallest points in Eastern Visayas and one of the most notable geographical features of the Philippines . 20. Karap-agan Falls/ Mahayahay Falls

Karap-agan Falls/ Mahayahay Falls cascades amidst stunning green foliage, giving it an enchanting view. It is a two-tier waterfall, with a naturally-built pool on each cascade.

You can jump or dive into these pools and have a rejuvenating swim. From the first cascade, you can climb your way to the second waterfall. Sit on its base as you relish the mists caressing you.

Today, it is one of the emerging tourist spots in Leyte.

Tourist Spots in Southern Leyte

21. limasawa island.

Limasawa is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Southern Leyte. It is where the first Christian mass in Asia was held, sparking the growth of Christianity in the Philippines.

But there is more to that. The island boasts of stunning beaches with rock formations where you can dive towards the turquoise waters of the sea. You can go snorkeling or swimming all day long with the locals and the marine species.

The Island also hosts other interesting sites such as the National Shrine of the First Catholic Mass in the Philippines, and caves.

22. Tagkaan Beach

Tagkaan Beach makes up a good choice if you’re after less touristy destinations in Southern Leyte. Catch sight of white sand beaches with coral fragments mixed with the sands.

Here, you’ll find amazing rock formations, crystal-clear waters, verdant beach forests, and rich marine life. If you’re lucky, you’ll see dolphins and pelagic fishes when you snorkel.

23. Panaon Island

Panaon Island is internationally known for its rich corals and marine wildlife, being a part of the Mindanao Deep or Philippine Trench. Among the species which inhabit the surrounding seas are whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, seahorses, and turtles.

You can hire boats to catch sight of these. The island is connected to mainland Southern Leyte via Wa-Wa Bridge.

24. Camboro Caves

Camboro Cave is just one of the hundreds of caves in Southern Leyte which await discovery. Inside, you’ll find spectacular and bizarre rock formations, cave corals, and glistening pools.

25. San Pedro and San Pablo Islands

The islands, considered as the most beautiful islands in the province, are named after the patron saints, San Pedro and San Pablo.

26. Guinsohotan Cave

27. Tagbak Marine Park

Tagbak Marine Park is one of the best tourist spots to see in Southern Leyte. Here, you’ll catch sight of crystal-clear waters, beautiful inlets, and mangrove forests. You can hop on one of the boats to explore the rich sea.

28. Napantao Marine Sanctuary

Napantao Marine Sanctuary is one of the protected tourist spots in Southern Leyte and one of the best sites for scuba diving and swimming.

29. Sun-ok Fish Sanctuary

Sun-ok Fish Sanctuary is one of the well-preserved tourist spots in Southern Leyte. You’ll find here stunning coral formations where different fishes dwell.

During November until May, you can glimpse of whale sharks. To protect the sanctuary, the locals prohibit fishing and gathering of shells.

2. San Juanico Bridge

Another national landmark found in the province of Leyte is no other than the San Juanico Bridge. For the longest time, San Juanico held the record for the Longest Bridge in the Philippines with a total length of an incredible 2,164 meters. This amazingly connects the two provinces of Samar and Leyte to each other! But now with the construction of the mind-blowing 8.9-kilometer Cebu-Cordova Bridge, San Juanico bows down to the number 2 spot.

Nevertheless, the San Juanico Bridge is still an engineering wonder worth seeing when you visit Leyte! The perfectly maintained structure along with the dark-blue waters and scenic landscape in the background will never fail to amaze me.

3. Cuatros Islas

From the name itself, we can conclude that the destination we’re talking about is four beautifully distinct islands. That’s exactly why it’s called Cuatros Islas! This group of picturesque islands attracts lots of tourists lately because of its undeniably pristine beauty. The four islands, namely Apid, Digyo, Mahaba, and Himokilan all possess heavenly tropical features that you can’t resist! 4. Lake Danao

Another one of Leyte’s exquisite natural wonders is the famous Lake Danao. This guitar-shaped lake covers a huge area of 148 hectares. It’s somewhat similar to the famous Taal Lake because according to experts, this precious gem is actually volcanic in origin.

5. Masaba Falls

Located in Matag-Ob, Leyte is a majestic hidden gem you definitely shouldn’t miss! The Masaba Falls is a huge waterfall consisting of seven (7) cascading slopes that have become a popular attraction for those who are looking for incredible action and adventures in Leyte.

Tucked within the lush forests, tourists would need to trek and even rappel down some tracks and the falls themselves before being able to head down the bottom. Once you’ve successfully done that, reward yourself by taking a dip and swimming in the natural pool created by the crystal-clear waters of Masaba Falls. 6. Canigao Island

7. MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park

Apart from Leyte’s incredible cultural landmarks and natural attractions, the province is also known for its several historical sites such as the MacArthur Leyte Landing Memorial National Park. This is also one of the most significant historical landmarks in the country because of its major representation of our country’s victory during World War II. It commemorates the iconic quote, “I Shall Return” of General Douglas MacArthur that utterly changed the whole course of the war. That very quote sparked hope and courage towards the Filipino people and the American soldiers he left. The moment General MacArthur waded ashore on the coasts of Leyte, it symbolized that the Philippines have finally reclaimed its freedom.

8. Santo Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum

Another significant cultural landmark in Leyte is the Santo Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum. Located in Hindang, Southern Leyte, the caves are nestled on top of Mt. Bontok so expect to overcome some hiking and trekking trails before you reach them. The caves and nearby areas are beautifully improved for tourists and well-maintained to make sure that everyone gets an unforgettable experience. There are concrete chairs and tables around where tourists can take a rest while wandering around the sanctuary.

The rock formations including the stalactites and stalagmites in the caves are absolutely stunning. I suggest that you hire a tour guide to help you navigate around the area better, they can even show you some secret spots where your group can take Instagrammable photos! But what really makes the trip to Hindang Caves and Wild Monkeys Sanctuary extra special is the close encounter with the wild monkeys! Don’t worry though because they are really friendly. Amazing, right?

10. Our Lady of the Assumption Shrine

One of the most anticipated religious landmarks to visit in Leyte is the Our Lady of the Assumption Shrine. Located in Maasin , Leyte, it is actually the tallest privately-owned religious shrine in the country known for its iconic 36-meter tall statue of the Virgin Mary.

The miraculous chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption Shrine is also one of the most visited churches not only in Maasin City but in the entire Southern Leyte. It can be accessed through a 400-step concrete staircase which will take you to the chapel and the foot of the statue at about 104 meters above sea level! The shrine has become very iconic in the city because it also gives tourists a beautiful view of Maasin’s mesmerizing landscape.

11. Kalabato Hot Springs and Eco Park

After touring and taking on adrenaline-pumping adventures around the province, it’s finally time to relax our bodies and regenerate our energy! Our next destination is no other than the Kalabato Hot Springs and Eco Park. Located in La Paz, Leyte, this new trending attraction in the province is loved by many thanks to the unique and relaxing experience it provides.

The Kalabato Hot Springs is known for its geologic rock formations where pools of hot water spring out. These rock formations are shaped like pumpkins or squashes, which are called kalabasa in Tagalog. Hence the name, Kalabato.

12. Himokilan Island

Ah, this one’s actually a part of the beautiful Cuatros Islas that we’ve mentioned earlier. Among the 4 islands, the largest one is the amazing 48-hectare Himokilan Island. Known for its boot-shaped landmass, white sand beaches, and azure waters, the island has been quite a popular gem in Leyte.

13. Palo Tzu Chi Great Love Village

Who wouldn’t want to visit a village of love, right? I’m sure everybody would love to visit something like that! The Palo Tzu Chi Great Love Village is a wonderful community established by the Tzu Chi Foundation which benefited thousands of people living in Leyte who were devastated by the Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

L eyte is a province in the Eastern Visayas Region (Region VIII). It sits on 75% of Leyte Island, and its capital city is Tacloban . It’s where the largest naval battle in the history of the Philippines is. The asymmetrical shape of Leyte makes it unique when viewed from above. It’s also where Mount Lobi is located. The province is rich with rolling plains and bodies of water.

The income source of the province is from fishing and crops like rice and corn. They also grow other crops like coconut, banana, sugarcane, tobacco, and abaca. Some mineral and stone deposits like manganese, limestone, and sandstone can be mined in its northwestern part.

But what attracts tourists the most about Leyte is the abundance of things to do. From natural attractions to manmade attractions to places to eat, there are many ways to get entertained and have adventures in Leyte.

Here are the top 15 things to do in Leyte.

Visit Historical Sites

Leyte’s history is driven by the fact that it’s where General Douglas MacArthur landed when he was trying to free the Philippines from the Japanese Imperial Army. You can visit the MacArthur landing Memorial, where larger-than-life statues of MacArthur and his force can be found.

You can also visit the Leyte Provincial Capitol, which became the seat of the government in 1944.

Another historical site worth going to is Palo Metropolitan Cathedral which was used as an evacuation center for the Allied forces and refugees during the Japanese-American war in 1944. The church features modern Gothic architecture with a 17th-century altar that is gold-plated.

Visit Cuatro Islas

Blend in with the locals while island hopping to this group of islands found in Inopacan and Hindang. The group of islands is Apid, Digyo, Mahaba, and Himokilan. These islands’ pristine beaches and coral reefs are thriving, but safety rules are implemented due to some environmental conditions.

The four islands may have differences in appearance, but they all have a laidback appearance, and the sky is just amazing when you’re at the beach. There are tours to choose from and range from visiting one island only to all four.

Visit Kalanggaman Island

You get exclusivity when visiting  Kalanggaman Island because only 500 tourists are allowed each visit. They follow these rules to maintain the beauty of the island. The island has fine sands, and although not exactly as fine as Boracay, it’s close and a new paradise.

Some activities can be done when you visit the island, like snorkeling, hiking, and biking, but nothing beats chilling by the beach.

Discover Mt. Pangasugan Ecopark

Alternatively called ‘the last frontier in Eastern Visayas,’ Mt. Pangasugan features steep terrain, a virgin rainforest mountain in Leyte. It has heavy vegetation where different plant and animal species thrive. It’s about 1,150 meters tall and where spring water goes to Baybay City and nearby towns.

You can see the beautiful shape of the mountain and several of its waterfalls during the wet season from Visayas State University. The same school protects wildlife like the Philippine Tarsier, Philippine Flying Fox, and Fischer’s Pygmy Fruit Bat.

Swim in Tongonan Hot Springs

The hot water of Tongonan Springs can relax your muscles, soothe your senses and improve your mood. This valley of geothermal power sources supplies the whole region of Leyte with energy, and it’s the first geothermal plant in the Philippines. The hot spring can be found in Ormoc, Leyte.

Visit Sto. Niño Church

Sto. Niño Church is located in Tacloban, Leyte. It’s a shrine and a heritage museum containing many artifacts and, of course, the miraculous image of Sto. Niño. The church features an airy and bright appearance compared to other churches adorned heavily with countless ornaments and statues.

Go to Stations of the Cross (Calvary Hill)

Catholic pilgrims include visiting a religious place every Holy Week, and the Calvary Hill in Tacloban is one of the places to remember the Passion of Christ. It’s a place where life-sized statues of Christ and the other important characters of his life are placed and sort of re-enact what transpired during those days.

This isn’t for the weak-hearted because you need to climb to the top to reach the other stations, but people who go here know that it’s part of the sacrifice.

Take Pictures of the San Juanico Bridge

San Juanico Bridge is the longest bridge in the Philippines that connects Leyte to Samar. They say it’s the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ birthday gift to his wife, former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

It runs across 1.34 miles or 2.16 kilometers and provides a scenic view that you can capture in photos.

Go Food Tripping in Leyte

Leyte is a desserts haven. They have different native delicacies that will make any person’s mouth with sweet tooth water. The first delicacy you should try is their Binagol, a combination of glutinous rice, taro pudding, and nuts. It has a filling of coconut and kalamay. The second one is their Chocolate Moron, made of pure cacao and combines white and brown colors.

The third one is Suman Latik, similar to Binagol but doesn’t have nuts and taro. They also have Sagmani made from taro and cassava, coconut milk, and peanuts and wrapped with banana leaves. The last one is Roscas. It’s a delicacy from Garugo, consisting of flour, sugar, eggs, shortening, and anise.

Watch Pintados Kasadyaan Festival

Watch the locals celebrate their Patron, Saint Sr. Santo Nino, through numerous song and dance numbers. The festival also remembers Leyte’s Pintado’s warriors, hence the colorful, merriment occasion. The festival is held every June 29, and many local and foreign tourists visit for its lively performances.

The festival is also a way for the locals to present their rich culture. The performers will have their faces and body heavily painted like the old Pintados warriors.

Visit Ormoc Bay

This large bay can be found in Leyte, extending to the Camotes Sea. The area has a rich history. It’s where the WWII Battle of Ormoc Bay took place. Today you can visit the WWWII Veterans & Centennial Park at the bay. You can spend some time there by yourself or with your family. The bay also offers stunning sunsets, so don’t forget to take a picture.

Go to Our Lady of Assumption Shrine

The shrine is located in Maasin City. You need to climb 300 steps to reach the 3-meter statue of Mother Mary. The climb is worth it once you see the gigantic image of the Mother of Jesus and the colorful ambiance of the mini paradise above. They light the shrine at night, so you get a different view than in the morning.

Witness Subiran Regatta

Subiran Regatta started in 1975, and it’s the first in Leyte. It’s part of the PintadosKasadyaan Festival. Each sailboat is controlled by only one man towards the end of the race in Leyte Gulf. These are single-sail native boats that are colorful.

The once-a-year event will list 30 and above participants from Leyte and Eastern and Western Samar. They have to race on approximately 15 kilometers of water to win impressive prizes. Watch the festival held every June 28.

HISTORY OF LEYTE

Leyte’s initial capital was Carigara, followed by Palo, Tanauan, and eventually Tacloban. On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur and President Sergio Osmena arrived with American forces at Palo, Leyte to begin the liberation of the Philippines from the Japanese Imperial Army.

On March 29, 1521, Rajah Kolambu and Magellan signed the first known blood contract on the island of Limasawa, Leyte, after Magellan set ship from Homonhon, Samar. The Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos gave Leyte the name “Felipina” in honor of King Philip of Spain in February 1543. The name was thereafter given to the entire archipelago. Leyte was the victim of separate raids by Muslim Sultans, Pagdalanum Buhiran and Kudarat, and Suluans. It was given political and military authority in 1735, and Samar came under its control. In 1768, Samar and Leyte were separated.

FESTIVALS IN LEYTE

• Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival This event, which is held on June 29 every year, is a vibrant display of Leyte’s culture and history. The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival honors the aboriginal warriors of the region and their body tattoos with street dances, cultural performances, and parades. The festival features three main events: the Subiran Regatta , a sailboat race held at the San Juanico Strait’s eastern entrance, Balyuan, a pageant reenacting the historic exchange of images between Basey, Samar, and Tacloban City, and the Pintados Festival, in which participants paint their bodies and dance to the beat of bamboo sticks.
• Buyogan Festival This celebration takes place in the town of Abuyog every August. The Buyogan Festival celebrates the town’s bountiful crops and honeybees by showcasing lively street dances, parade floats, and cultural activities. The Buyogan procession, which is attended by a number of groups, is the festival’s main attraction. Participants don a variety of vibrant costumes that are modeled after the varied forms and hues of bee life. Children depict a miniature beehive with buzzing small bees within. To represent the town’s ethnic background, other participants paint and henna tattoo tribal motifs on their faces and bodies.
• Sangyaw Festival The Sangyaw Festival, which takes place in Tacloban City every June 29th, is a significant celebration of the culture and history of the city. THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LEYTE

Palompon, Leyte Travel Guide from a Local: Tips to Kalanggaman Island and More!

My hometown, Palompon, Leyte is known for the gorgeous Kalanggaman Island. However, it’s not the only attraction in our municipality. This Palompon, Leyte travel guide will let you know what the attractions to visit, how to go there, and where to stay and where to eat. Trust me, I’m from here!

Originally called Hinablayan, legend tells that Spaniards change its name to “Paungpung” due to a cluster of mangroves (pongpong) they saw floating at the bay. Gradually the name evolved to Palompong, then to Palumpun, and its current spelling of Palompon sometime in 1700 or 1800.

Palompon is a 2 nd Class of municipality in Leyte, a province in the Eastern Visayas. Palompon is located across the island of Cebu, so basically, two hours travel by boat from Palompon to Bogo City, Cebu. The nearest city is Ormoc City, which is a one and a half-hour van ride, while to Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte, it is a three-hour ride.

Things to do in Palompon, Leyte

1. kalanggaman island.

With sand so white and waters so crystal blue, Kalanggaman Island is the gem of Palompon and the Philippines as well. Since it resembled a bird which is called “langgam” in Bisaya; this was named Kalanggaman. The island has a gorgeous sand bar and also many trees for shade. Tourists can stay during the day only or can sleep overnight. Since it is monitored strictly by the local government, tourists are limited only to 500 a day, and the island is regularly maintained.  Rest assured, the island is clean and not crowded; you will appreciate the beauty of it.

2. Palompon Eco-Terrestrial Adventure Park

From the beach, you can enjoy mountain views at the Eco Terrestrial Adventure Park. Try to Zipline, Skybike, Hike Trails, Explore Caves, and Rappel on an enormous rock face. Adrenaline junkies would enjoy this place. If you want to hike or explore the cave, it will take about 30 minutes (if you’re professional), I got there after an hour; it’s not easy for a beginner. This is indeed a fun place to be!

3. Tabuk Marine Park and Bird Sanctuary

Just a few minutes boat ride away from the town proper, Tabuk is made of abundant Mangroves that have grown over the years. It provides sanctuary to a wide array of birds, fruit bats, and colorful marine life. There’s a bamboo walkway on Tabuk where you can check out the birds or bats hanging around. Snorkeling is allowed around the area, but don’t capture the fishes, or you will be fined. If you want to hang out with friends or family, there’s also a stilt/floating cottage available.

4. St. Francis Xavier Parish

Palompon doesn’t boast only in gifts by Mother Nature but also in history. Considered its own parish in 1784, it is one of the oldest churches in Leyte. It is also one of the first few towns of ancient Leyte, where the first mass of Christendom in the Philippines was held. The Jesuits built the parish and made a Jesuit Saint, St. Francis Xavier, its patron saint. December 3 is the town’s fiesta; be delighted street dancing competitions, crowning the festival queen, fluvial processions, and a holy mass with a lot of priests during the “Lawig Festival.” Currently, our Parish has a project where the ceiling is painted, the center near the altar is already done and it adds more beauty to the church.

5. Masaba Falls

Located in the Barangay of the same name, due to the “noise” of the falls in the area, the name was coined after the local word “Saba”. For adventurous people out there and those who could survive a trek of an hour or two, this would be delightful. It’s a gorgeous spot, and not many tourists visit this place so you could embrace it all to yourselves.

Lantaw means “to see” or “overlook” in English. Taking a quick hike in a small hill, you could witness a 360° view of the town. Catch stunning sunrises and sunsets here; a big plus is that it’s near the town center and has a very affordable entrance fee (PHP 10.00).

7. Rock Resorts

The Rock Resort is in the last coastal barangay to the south of Palompon, Brgy. Buenavista. It is located at the edge of a cape and could give you a panoramic view of Camotes Sea and the island of Cebu. The cliffs at the edge have whitened due to the continuous lashing of waves. Swim in clear waters and appreciate the unique rock formations. Popular resorts are L and L Cove Rock Resort and Pang-Pang Beach Resort.

Not known by many locals, Paraiso is the Chocolate Hills or the Little Hundred Islands of Palompon. It is located in Brgy. Cantandoy. You can wallow in the tranquil waters and the serene vibe while on a boat ride. Try to bring some food so that you can enjoy a picnic here with a picturesque view.

9. San Juan Beach

A go-to place of the locals to celebrate Birthdays, Reunions, or to hang out; San Juan, named from St. John the Baptist, is the longest beach resort in Palompon. Vitamin Sea is unlimited and free here. “Sinabligay Festival,” the barangay’s festival, held on June 24, is a day where you will get wet and have fun!

10. Palompon Park

Near the Municipal Hall and just a few minutes’ from the Parish Church, relax with friends as you ponder the memories you have made in our little town. The “PALOMPON” Signage is located at the back of the Municipal Hall, and Tabuk Island is just across. Sunsets are stunning here; the Island and the boats passing by are great silhouettes for your view.

How to get to Palompon, Leyte?

There are no airports in Palompon, Leyte, but the nearest ones are Cebu and Tacloban.

• Ride a boat Medallion in Pier 3 (every day at 9 PM) or Cokaliong in Pier 1 (M, T, TH, Sat at 8 PM and Sunday 12 Noon.) If you were to ask me which I prefer, I usually sleep at Cokaliong – Tourist since it arrives at about 12-1 am so that I can take a rest home. If you have a room rented, you can get Cokaliong, but if not, then Medallion is good, and it arrives at about 3-5 am; you can go to the Tourism office if you’re going to Kalanggaman.

• If nights are not right for you, then try the route to Ormoc City. From Cebu, you can ride Fast Crafts (PHP 700 – PHP 1,000) to Ormoc City; it will be about a 2-3 hour ride. The first trip is early in the morning at about 5 am and 5 PM. From Ormoc, you can catch a van in Robinsons Ormoc to Palompon. It will take about 1 to 1.5 hours and cost you PHP 120.00.

From Tacloban

• Go to Abucay Bus Terminal near Robinsons Tacloban. There are buses and vans from Tacloban to Palompon. The first trip is about 3 or 4 am, and the last trip is 5:45 pm, but if there are many passengers, it might go earlier. The van costs PHP 225.00. Travel time is 3 hours.

Where to eat in Palompon, Leyte?

1620 Bistro

It’s a Café –Restaurant in Washington St, Palompon, Leyte a walking distance from the Park. You can buy rice meals, coffee, nachos, Pizza, and many more. The ambience is also great too!

May Abuhan is a fast food Filipino Restaurant near the terminal and pier. They serve rice meals, viand, halo-halo, and pasta. You can order it as takeaway so if you’re going on your adventures, you’ll have baon.

BBQ at the Terminal

My Palompon, Leyte travel guide wouldn’t be complete without a local’s favorite. During night time, the terminal area becomes a food area with many BBQ stalls. My pick is the one at the back. It’s also great here if you are on a budget as hanging rice is PHP 3 or 4, then pork bbq is PHP 10.00.

Palompon Lodge

Palompon Lodge is an apartment that has rooms that fit up to 5 guests, so it’s great for groups. Air condition, toiletries, TV, full kitchen, and kitchenware are available. Rooms are air-conditioned with bathroom and toiletries. Love Traveller’s Inn is very near establishments like Jollibee and Mercury Drug Store, basically your neighbors! It’s also about 2-3 minutes to the Tourism Office. Book here .

Sergi’s Resort and Hotel

Address: Sitio Buaya, Brgy. Sabang., Palompon, Leyte Double room starts at USD 26, for 2 persons

If you want to stay by the beach and feel the fresh air and sea breeze morning or night, try Sergi’s Resort and Hotel. It’s a gorgeous place with a garden and a view of the sea. Rooms have TV, air-condition and Wi-Fi. You can also order food here as restaurants, and the town city is a bit far. Book here .

Southern Leyte is a province where you can find several marine sanctuaries such as Tagbak and Napantao. Apart from islands and seas, you will get the chance to walk on the dark passages of the province’s large cage system with different mineral formations inside. If you want to capture the panoramic view from the highest bridge in the country, here’s your guide to the top tourist spots in Southern Leyte.

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Southern Leyte, Philippines

Limasawa island.

Limasawa Island is never going to be just a typical island. It is located in the municipality of Limasawa where the first Christian Mass in the land of Asia was held. Speaking of this small yet beautiful paradise, it has a unique shoreline with big and exotic rock formations. You will find yourself mesmerized as the small waves crash with the rock formations just along the shoreline of the beach.

Agas-Agas Bridge

Have you been in the tallest bridge in the Philippines? If not, you are yet to experience the combination of excitement and fear as you stand on Agas-Agas Bridge in Brgy. Kahupian, Sogod in Southern Leyte. It is one of the top tourist spots in Souther Leyte attracting more and more tourists while giving way for those driving along the Maharlika Highway.

Maasin Cathedral

Before you start or before you end your trip in Southern Leyte, make sure to drop by the sacred church known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption of Maasin. This church was built in 17th century and since then holding a significant portion in the history of the city. If you are interested to visit this holy place, you can get a ride from any point of the country to Hinunangan.

Cambaro Caves

Make sure to bring your flashlights as you enter the Cambaro caves in Molopolo. It is a great alternative if you are tired of sea adventures as you will discover solid mineral formations during your cave trip. It is believed that Cambaro is the Cave Capital of Southern Leyte because it houses hundreds of caves, some are yet to be found. Guinsohotan Cave

As you hike on the way to Guinsohotan Cave, you will pass by Guinsohotan Falls. You can enjoy your nature time in this falls before then prepare yourself to trek upstream to access the entrance of the cave. Tagbak Marine Park

Tagbak Marine Park , located in the municipality of Liloan, is the best viewpoint in the province. Once you get here, you will surely enjoy seeing the crystal blue waters, inlets, and mangroves surrounding the nearby islands. You will also get a chance to ride on a boat and explore the vast sea.

Napantao Marine Sanctuary

How to get to Southern Leyte

There is currently no commercial airport in Southern Leyte. the closest airport is in Ormoc and Tacloban. From these two cities, you can take a bus or van to get to the towns and cities of Southern Leyte like Maasin and Sogod. There are also buses that travel from Manila and Davao to Southern Leyte. How to get to isabel.

Direct Flights from Manila, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and more are being served to Tacloban. Flights are operated by Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia.

✓ ENTRY POINT MANILA (NAIA) or CEBU (MCIA) or DAVAO

• By Airplane (Cebu pacific, Airasia and Philippine Airlines)

Board a plane going to Tacloban from Manila.

At Tacloban Airport, ride a jeepney to ‘Downtown’ or the city proper for P50. Ask to be dropped at Van-Van’s or Duptours terminal for a van for Baybay.

At the terminal, hop on a Van-van’s or Duptours van or a bus en route to Isabel. Travel time is around 3 hours- 4 hours. Fare is around Php 800.00 – Php 1,100.00.

✓ ENTRY POINT DANAO, CEBU

• By Boat (Roble Shipping Lines)

From Cebu, ride the EB Aznar Shipping Corp. boat from Danao to Isabel. EB Aznar Shipping Corp. serves the route daily.

✓ ENTRY POINT CEBU (PIER 1)

• By Fast Craft or Fast Boat (2GO, Oceanjet or Weesam)

From Cebu, ride any of the three boats at Pier 1 to Ormoc City, Leyte. The three fast crafts serve the route daily. Travel Time is around 3 hours. Fare is PHP 1100.00 per person.

At Ormoc City port, walk towards the terminal.

At the terminal, ride a van/bus going to isabel. Travel time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

✓ ENTRY POINT CEBU (PIER 1 or 3)

• By Fast Craft or Fast Boat or slow boat

From Cebu, ride any of the boats at Pier 1 or Pier 3 to Palompon, Leyte. The fast craft serves the route daily. Travel Time is around 3 hours.

At Palompon port, walk towards the terminal.

At the terminal, ride a van/bus going to Isabel. Travel time is around 40 minutes.
