Kashmiri cuisine
The popularity of Kashmiri cuisine can be attributed to its delicious flavor and variety of regional specialties. The use of freshly ground spices and aromatic herbs gives each dish its own distinct taste.
Kashmiri food is characterized by the use of traditional spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and saffron to give it a unique flavor. The dish also includes yogurt-based sauces, tomato-based gravies, nuts and dried fruits.
Popular dishes include Rogan Josh (spicy lamb curry), Yakhni (a flavored mutton broth), Tabak Maaz (fried lamb ribs simmered in a rich yogurt-based sauce), and Nadru Yakhni (lotus stem cooked with yogurt). Vegetarian dishes such as Dum Aloo (potato curry), Kashmiri Phirni (rice pudding) and Modur Pulav (sweetened rice dish with nuts and dried fruits) are also popular.
A highlight of Kashmiri cuisine is the Wazwan, a multi-course meal featuring sumptuous delicacies like Daniwal Korma (lamb curry), Gushtaba (meatballs in yogurt sauce), and Tschaman (cottage cheese curry).
Kashmiri cuisine is incomplete without its aromatic teas and refreshing drinks. Kashmiri Chai, a special type of salty tea prepared with milk and baking soda, is a popular beverage in the region.
Noon Chai, also known as Pink Tea, is another traditional favorite that has been enjoyed by generations of locals. Other popular drinks include Sheer Chai (salted buttermilk), Kahwa (green tea flavored with saffron and spices), and Sharbat (a cold drink made from rose petals, almonds, and sugar). A variety of Kashmiri breads like Kulcha, Sheermal, Tsochvoru, and Baqarkhani are also served in the region.
Kashmiri food has been influenced by both Mughlai and Afghan cuisines. The region’s proximity to Central Asia has also resulted in the incorporation of some Persian culinary traditions into the Kashmiri culinary landscape.
This reflects in dishes like Yakhni Palav, a rice dish cooked with yogurt, spices and dried fruits. It is also evident in the region’s traditional desserts like Phirni and Halwa, which are both made with rice flour. The use of traditional spices such as saffron, cardamom, and cinnamon has been a hallmark of Kashmiri cuisine since ancient times. With its unique flavors and aromas, this flavorful cuisine celebrates the rich culture of the Kashmiri people.
Whether enjoyed in its traditional form or adapted for contemporary palates, there is no denying that Kashmiri dishes are a delight for the senses. With its unique ingredients and flavors, Kashmiri cuisine is truly an experience to be savored.

There is very little left to say about the cold, bare and hauntingly beautiful desert of Ladakh , that hasn't already been said before. Tales of its beauty and mystique are sung far and wide, with people from all over the world putting the region on their bucket list of places to experience before they die. It's cold, it's crystal clear and it's very, very photogenic up here. Bi-humped bactrian camels, red cloaked monks, and flocks of mountain goat trudge along, lending the landscape a timeless aura. Stunning blue-green lakes ripple silently within giant basins of brown and purple rock. The sun and clouds bathe each part of the region in a different Hue at different times of the day; sometimes a hopeful golden, sometimes a glowering indigo. The region is very used to tourists, so you will always find plenty of places to stay, eat and rest. Hiring local driver-driven jeeps is expensive, so many people prefer to brave the terrain on yaks, bikes or on foot. Leh is a quiet, spiritual little town, steeped in tradition and Buddhist culture. Many people prefer to stay in Leh and make day trips into Ladakh and its neighbouring villages. Ladakh is great to visit if you're into travel photography or writing or just want a good adventure and some alone time.

The people of Kargil were mostly Tibetan-Buddhist until the 18th and 19th century after which most converted to Islam. They are of mixed Dard and Tibetan descent, and most are Baltis. Kargil is known as the battleground for the Kargil War which was fought in 1999 when Pakistani soldiers, disguised as Kashmiri military insurgents, infiltrated the area in and around Kargil. The nearest India can make to being a ski resort is via its pine-fringed Gulmarg. Situated at an elevation of 2730 meters above sea level, it well justifies the Meadow of Flowers tag that it has received. The meadow is given a visual highlight by the 1890s Anglican Church of St Mary’s that sits on a lonely hillock which can be accessed off the dead-end road that links the 1965 neo-colonial style Hotel Highlands Park to the historic Gulmarg Golf Club. However, the key reason to visit Gulmarg is just not the same. You must visit Gulmarg to explore the backing stands of the splendid mature pines traversing you to the elevation of bald Mt Afarwat. To make it to mountain, you can either trek on foot or take help from ponies at a meagre amount of INR 300 per hour. However, the easiest way out is using the two-stage gondola cable car that flutters you to 3747m. The impressive clear day views from the top are worth the ride. During this ride, you’ll encompass Nanga Parbat which is the world’s ninth highest mountain peak located across Pakistan. Booking for this online can help save you from the long queues especially in the peak season of May and June. This service can however be cancelled either due to civil unrest or during bad weather and getting a refund from the organizers can get really annoying then. Base station of Gandola is situated about 1 km west of the bus stand.
Gulmarg endeavors you with more than 40 choices of accommodation each of them beautiful in their own very way. In the months of July, an average room fare (for a night) will be around INR 2000 for the old looking stays and INR 5000 for newer stays. Prices of the hotels see a drop of 20% in the winter season and a further dramatic drop when there is civil unrest in Srinagar or during the less popular months like September.
Best of Kargil
