The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway - passing Voss - Norway

The Bergen Railway is the approximately 500 kilometres (approx. 310 miles) long railway line between Bergen and Oslo. The construction of the Bergen Railway was a huge project in its day and was completed in 1909.

The line crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The duration of the trip between the two end stations is  Bergen and  Oslo is approx. 7 hours.

The decision to build the railway line was made in 1894 and it was completed in 1909. The stretch of railway between Bergen and Voss, which was completed already in 1893, really revolutionized life for the communities along the line. It is said that the construction of the Bergen Railway was a huge project in its day and that it can be compared with today's development of the oil industry on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the North Sea.

One of the railway’s greatest challenges is the harsh and changeable weather. The Bergen Railway line is exposed to deep low-pressure centers from the west, which can mean strong winds and heavy snow for part of the year. Keeping the railway open demands great effort and technical expertise. Today, skilled workers, efficient equipment, tunnels, and snow tunnels make the Bergen Railway one of the safest and most comfortable ways of traveling between Oslo and Bergen.

You can experience the Bergen Railway on many of our tours - have a look below!

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

The spectacular train ride from Bergen to Flåm

The highest mainline railway in Northern Europe, the scenic rail journey from Bergen to Flåm is one of the highlights of a visit to Norway – and a great way to get a taste of the fjords.

The Flamsbana railway, Norway

The first part of the journey, on the main Bergen to Oslo line, skims past boathouses and red painted cabins before climbing to Norway’s craggy, windswept uplands.

Its remotest sections see few signs of human life, and it becomes clear just what a feat of engineering it was to build this line at the end of the 19th century.

After changing trains at Myrdal (867m above sea level) onto the private Flåmsbana, you head down into the wild Flåm valley.

This is the most dramatic and scenic section of the ride and – in our opinion – the most stomach-churning!

On this final 20km leg, the train has four sets of brakes in case the worst happens as it threads its way down the mountainside. There’s even a switchback turn in the middle of a tunnel to keep the journey interesting.

But, despite being one of Europe’s steepest mountain railways, it’s also one of the most beautiful. So, we think it’s well worth the slightly scary steep approach.

After fifty minutes, you reach your final destination of Flåm on the shores of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the famous Sognefjord.

The journey: Bergen to Flåm Which side of the train is best? What to do in Flåm Where to stay in Flåm Where to eat in Bergen and Flåm Top tips for riding the Flam railway When to go Buying tickets: Bergen to Flåm

The journey: Bergen to Flåm

The full journey from Bergen to Flåm (four trains daily) takes between 2hr 45min and 3hr 38min using the fast Bergen to Oslo service.

View of the fjord from Flam

The fast train stops at Arna (boarding only); Dale, home of the eponymous traditional knitwear; the winter resort of Voss, where skiers jump off the train and schuss off; and Myrdal, the junction station for the Flåmsbana.

Myrdal is where Flåm’s farmers used to bring their livestock to summer pastures, though no-one lives here permanently today.

Pretty much the only building is the station with its Café Rallaren (open April to October), where you can hire a bike (June to Sept; around 420 NOK/day) and freewheel the 20km down to Flåm – OK, more like hang on for grim life to the handlebars with the brakes on. You can leave the bike at Flåm station.

From Myrdal, the Flåmsbana has nine departures daily from May to September, and four to six daily from October to April.

Stops include the thundering 140m-high Kjosfossen waterfall, where the train halts for a photo opportunity, and Berekvam, where you can get off and hike down the old road into the valley in two to three hours.

In summer when the train stops at the Kjosfossen waterfall, look and listen out for the Huldra.

We love this mythical forest spirit who sings folk songs in a red dress by the waterfall.

Spoiler alert: she’s actually played by students from the Norwegian ballet School, some of whom are male – if you look closely you can sometimes see her sporting a beard!

Which side of the train is best?

There’s not really a best side, both sides are beautiful at different stages of the journey.

If you have a pre-assigned seat you’ll have no choice in the matter, but you can get up and walk around the train, so that you don’t miss the most scenic sections.

Travelling from Flåm to Myrdal, we think that the right side has the best views for the first third of the journey.

Then, we suggest moving over to the left-hand side of the train for the middle section, and back to the right-hand side for the final third of the trip.

What to do in Flåm

While the journey is easily doable as a day trip, it’s worth staying overnight in Flåm to enjoy the fjord in peace once the day-trippers and cruise passengers have left.

This also gives you time to head out on a guided kayaking trip with Njord Sea Kayak , or go cycling or hiking.

The tourist office  has free maps, with trails of various lengths from 45min to five hours.

There are lots of sightseeing trips and fjord cruises too, including a dramatic ferry trip from Flåm to Gudvangen past orchards and farmsteads into the Unesco-listed Naerøyfjord. Return on the same ferry or the cheaper and quicker bus (five daily).

We also really like this guided tour from Flåm of the picturesque Laerdal valley , with its fruit farms and rural scenery. It takes in the historic Borgund Stave Church and fantastic views of the Aurlandsfjord from the dramatic Stegastein viewpoint.

Or why not include a bike ride, and boat trip with the train ride?

We recommend this fantastic full-day all-in trip from Bergen to Myrdal, where you’ll pick up bikes and cycle down to Flåm for a RIB safari on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord.

You’ll then ride the Flåm railway up to Myrdal and get the train back to Bergen.

Where to stay in Flåm

Lots of people whizz in and out of Flåm, but you’ve come all this way and it would be a shame not to spend some time in this picturesque village.

We really recommend staying the night in Flåm if you have the time – and there are plenty of places to options to choose from.

If you’re on a budget, our first choice would be the Flam Camping og Vandrerhjem (open April to October), a 300m walk from the station.

This pine-clad, lodge-style hostel has bunks rooms sleeping up to six (550 NOK per person), plus singles, doubles, twins, and quads, as well as grassy pitches for tents (from 360 NOK).

Alternatively, try Heimly Pensjonat  (open late May to September), a quiet guesthouse 500m walk from the station.

Converted from a 1930s home and renovated in 2018, it has 22 small rooms (from 2500 NOK), some with fjord views, and all with private bathroom.

And although we didn’t actually get to stay there on our trip, we recommend checking out the lovely Flåm Marina right on the waterfront. They have family rooms and rooms with a kitchenette so are great if you’re self-catering.

Where to eat in Bergen and Flåm

Since there’s no buffet car on the Flåm railway, you’ll probably want to eat before your trip or afterwards.

Here are a few options we like in Bergen and Flåm.

If you want to pick up a tasty pastry or sandwich for the journey, we like the Flam Bakery , right by the train station. It sells freshly made bread, cakes, croissants and pizzas to eat in or take with you.

For something more substantial, the Flåm Marina hotel has a good restaurant with lovely views of the fjord. It serves traditional Norwegian dishes and pizzas – we suggest you try the fish soup.

Bergen has loads of places to eat. If money is no object, our top choice is the Lysverket restaurant at Bergen’s KODE art museum.

Specialising in New Nordic cuisine, this Michelin-star restaurant serves a tasting menu (1849 NOK) that features dishes such as brown crab, rice and truffle and langoustine tempura.

And if you’re on a budget, we recommend the Daily Pot for its tasty vegetarian bowls of soups, curries and salads – we particularly like the vegan cheesecakes!

Top tips for riding the Flam railway

  • The train can get very busy in high season, so we recommend avoiding July and August if possible.
  • Most cruise ship passengers ride the railway in the middle of the day, so we suggest travelling early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowds.
  • Check the Flam harbour website to see if there’s a cruise ship in port when you arrive. If there is, pick a different day, if you can.
  • We think winter is the best time to ride the railway if you want to avoid the crowds. The surrounding scenery looks beautiful covered in snow and there are fewer people around.
  • There are only a couple of public toilets on the train. We suggest using the facilities in Flam or Myrdal, so you don’t spend most of the journey in the toilet queue.
  • There’s no buffet car on the train, so bring your own water bottle and food if you need a snack.

Several thousand people a day can descend on Flåm (resident population: 450) on summer weekends. Don’t let this put you off, though – there are plenty of ways to avoid the worst of the crowds.

It all comes down to timing: travel in spring or autumn, or at least midweek in the busy months of June to August.

Kjosfossen near Flåm in Norway

May is one of our favourite months to travel on the railway, as the waterfalls are particularly dramatic and full of melting ice water, and surrounding fields and countryside is lush and green.

Winter is a good option, too, when the deep turquoise of the frozen waterfalls along the route is unforgettable.

Buying tickets: Bergen to Flåm

You can buy tickets up to 90 days in advance and reserve a seat from Bergen to Myrdal on long-distance Bergen to Oslo trains (not local trains).

There are no seat reservations on the Flåmsbana. Check here to find departure times, book online and get an e-ticket sent straight to you.

Prefer to take a tour?

If don’t want the hassle of buying all the tickets separately, but still want to ride the Flåm railway and do a boat trip on the fjord, this one-day self-guided tour is a nice option. It lets you enjoy spectacular scenery along the way and includes all of the bus, boat and rail tickets you need for the entire journey.

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid from Bergen to Myrdal (paid seat reservations essential), and will get you a 30% discount on single tickets from Myrdal to Flåm (regular single fare 470 NOK).

Without a pass, Bergen to Flåm costs 841 NOK each way, depending on the time and date of travel.

Take a look, too, at the Norway in a Nutshell circuit, which you can get from Bergen or Oslo.

Bergen to Flåm is just a part of it, so check whether the set itinerary matches with where you want to go.

Melanie

We are flying into Oslo this winter and planned to travel to Bergen by rail. If we want to see Flam too should we plan on buying two separate tickets on the way back to Oslo with an overnight in Flam?

Jill

We are doing the Hurtigruten cruise and are adding on some days in Bergen and Oslo and want to experience the train trip between the two. We’ld like to travel on the Flam railway too. Is it reasonable to take the Oslo/Bergen train and detour to Flam from Myrdal and return to continue the trip?

Tina

Will be coming via cruise ship to Bergen, & would like to ride the Flam railway. We will be in port from 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Is this possible to do in this time frame with time to check out the waterfall in Flam & look around a little also? What time should I book our train out & back & what is the best way to get to the train station in Bergen? Thanks!

Renae A Vaillancourt

1. I would like to take the train from Bergen to flam ,spend the night and continue on to oslo. do I need to purchase my tickets from different places? or would this be all one purchase. sounds like the train into Flam is different? 2. does the train from Bergen to Oslo go thru Flam? I just want to see as much as I can in my short time. unable to do Norway in a nutshell as the other couple we are traveling with feels it will be too much [physically]

Routes North

Looks like you could overnight in Flåm but if you wanted to go to Oslo you would have to change at Myrdal first. Easiest option is probably to buy tickets separately!

Donna Weiss

I’m a bit confused about how to plan the trip. We fly into Oslo and from Oslo should we get a train to Bergen to then go to Flam?

That would work, yep – or you could fly to Bergen if you wanted to. It’s about an hour’s flight.

NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL®

Flåm railway (flåmsbana), fjords in norway, aurlandsfjord.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: WELCOME TO BERGEN

After arriving at Bergen - Flesland Airport, make your way to Bergen’s  city centre, where your hotel for the night is located. For those arriving early, we recommend a visit to Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as stopping by the Edvard Grieg museum and the KODE art museum.

For a relaxing afternoon, downtown Bergen is a fabulous place to grab a seat outside at one of the bustling restaurant-pubs. There are also plenty of boutiques and shops nearby, along with the lively Fisketorget (fish market) that sells the catch of the day, fresh flowers and other artisanal goods.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 2: THE CAPITAL OF THE FJORDS

Today, you can get close to Bergen‘s breathtaking nature. We recommend riding the  Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. The ride takes only about 8 minutes each way, and on top of Fløyen you will find several hiking paths.

Other options include hiking up Mt. Ulriken or boarding the cable car up the mountain and walking down, or enjoying the fastest zipline in Norway from Mt. Ulriken on an epic 300m experience - suspended from the top of the Bergen mountains .

Spend another night in Bergen.

Day 3: NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL BY LAND AND SEA

Today will be an especially scenic day with a lot of travel. From Bergen, the early Bergensbanen train transports you to Voss, where you’ll be transported by bus to Gudvangen . There, you will embark on a scenic 2-hour fjord cruise to  Flåm , including a trip through  Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is perhaps the most breathtaking part of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, with its mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls, and small farms dotting the mountainsides. Finally, the boat sails up  Aurlandsfjord  to Flåm, a charming village,

where you will spend the evening.

Spend the night in Flåm.

We recommend booking luggage transfer for the travel between Bergen and Oslo.

Day 4: EXPLORE SCENIC FLÅM

Spend the day exploring the beauty of the Flåm and its surroundings. There are many well-maintained hiking paths for those want to explore the beauty of the region by foot. You also get free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre , where you can learn about the construction of this railway, which has earned the title of one of the world’s steepest railway lines. An optional activity to Stegastein viewpoint is recommended. The viewing platform extends about 30 metres from the cliffside and 650m above the fjords, to offer unbeatable views. For those who want to explore the fjords even further, you can enjoy an optional fjord safari or a kayaking tour.

Spend another night in Flåm.

Day 5: THE FLÅM RAILWAY EXPERIENCE

Spend the early part of your day exploring the village of Flåm by following one of the many hiking trails in the mountains around the village. Later in the afternoon, you’ll get to experience the famous Flåm Railway firsthand as it climbs 900 metres over a span of 20 kilometres up the winding track to the Myrdal Station. Here you will switch to the Bergensbanen train that carries you over the mountainous rooftops of Norway. This ride will take you through the charming villages of  Geilo  and Gol before concluding in Oslo.

Once in Oslo, we recommend exploring the capital of Norway by foot, spending the afternoon at sights including the Munch Museum,  Akershus fortress ,  Oslo Opera , and the  Aker Brygge  area.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 6: EXPLORE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OSLO

This morning, get an early start to explore the Norwegian capital. We recommend booking a guided bus tour that will take you along the famous landmarks of the city. Highlights include the beautiful  Vigeland Sculpture Park , the  Royal Palace ,  Akershus fortress,  and  Oslo City Hall .

Another option is to tour Oslo on your own visiting some of the above attractions, or others like the Fram Polar Ship Museum and Karl Johans street. You will then have the rest of the day to explore at your own leisure.

Spend another night in Oslo.

Day 7: DEPARTURE FROM OSLO

For transportation to Oslo-Gardermoen Airport, you can take the Flytoget express train from Oslo Central Station or book a private transfer through Nordic Visitor that will deliver you to the airport directly from your hotel. If your flight is in the afternoon, take the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s museums or just relax at a café reflecting on your Norway holiday.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! You'll be able to enter your children’s ages during the booking process.

For infants (0 to 2 years old), please let us know in the details if you’d like a baby cot.

For kids 3-11 years old, we’ll automatically book an extra bed for your trip.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June , July and August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Please note that if you travel in spring, end of March through April , you’ll find that many attractions and museums are operating on reduced winter hours.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, cruise along frosty fjords and chase the magnificent northern lights.

If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night. At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

From Oslo in the south, Norway stretches hundreds of kilometres into the Arctic Circle. The country is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N. For that reason, daylight hours vary greatly depending on where you’ll be visiting. That said, summer in Norway brings long days with plenty of daylight.

In the south, around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

In fact, within the Arctic Circle, from mid-May to late July, you’ll experience the midnight sun. This is when the sun never fully sets.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway. That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location.

For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the far north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F) and in the north, around Tromsø, you can expect temperatures around 10°C (41-50°F)

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page Norway weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

Very responsive and allowed us to make changes. Helpful to have times of various transportation arranged since we didn't know how to gauge distance, etc. We were lucky to avoid the large cruise ships and so that did not impact our experience.

5 unmissable European train journeys

In Europe, take the train not a plane for a more enjoyable journey. Photo / Getty Images

Criss-cross Europe on these popular rail routes and not only will you find extraordinary views, you’ll also find an experience that is far more enjoyable than air travel, Justine Costigan

Choose train travel and you’ll get more than just transportation , with each journey a chance to peek into a country’s character, cuisine, and culture. Here are five of our European favourites.

Vienna to Venice

The 434km journey from Vienna’s sleek Hauptbahnhof station to Venice’s Santa Lucia station takes a little over seven and a half hours, and although there is an overnight option, the night train means missing out on some spectacular Austrian and Italian scenery . Kicking off from Vienna, you’ll soon reach the 41km Unesco World Heritage-listed Semmering Railway, which includes 14 tunnels and 16 viaducts, before continuing past lakes, castles, and picturesque villages before heading through the Julian Pass, where the peaks are so steep you sometimes have to crane your neck to see the sky. The sleek modern trains offer free Wi-Fi , and a menu with a taste of Austria including a very decent schnitzel and strudel. Put this on your must-do-now list vecause the route will change in 2025, swapping the Semmering Railway section for a newly constructed tunnel designed to shave 20 minutes off the journey.

Rome to Palermo

It might seem like strange advice, but while the overnight train from Rome to Palermo means missing the views along the mainland route, it makes up for it in early-morning magical experiences. After leaving Termini about 11pm, you’ll reach the Calabrian port where the train is loaded on to the ferry for the crossing to mainland Sicily around sunrise. On the ferry, leave your carriage to head up to the deck to view the lights of Messina Marittima and the sometimes-wild Straits of Messina — the mythical setting for the story of Scylla and Charybdis, sea monsters who sent sailors to their deaths. Back on firm ground, the train tightly tracks the Sicilian coastline with to-die-for views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, briefly, the Aeolian Islands sparkling in the morning sun. If you book the very comfortable sleepers, your ticket includes an excellent breakfast of cappuccino and cornetto.

Oslo to Bergen

The six-and-a half-hour trip between Oslo and Bergen, Norway’s two largest cities, has been called one of Europe’s most beautiful train journeys and it’s hard to argue (pointless, even) with this grand declaration once the train leaves Oslo’s suburbs and reaches the Hardangervidda National Park, which features dramatic scenery at every turn. The Hardangervidda plateau, an untouched arctic wilderness above the tree line, can be accessed by only Finse station, the highest railway station in Europe, so you’ll be sharing a carriage with enthusiastic skiers (or hikers and mountain bikers ) as well as trans-city commuters. The train itself is sleek and modern, with a cafe serving Norwegian specialities including every Norwegian’s favourite pastry, the addictive cinnamon bun.

The French Riviera bunny hop

The journey from Nice to Ventimiglia may not be grand in length, but it is glorious in scope. Offering Hollywood views for the humble price of a train ticket, you’ll have a front-row seat to the sparkling Mediterranean, bobbing yachts, rocky beaches , and pretty, cliff-hugging towns bathed in its famous soft pink light. Rather than speed through the 40-minute journey, you’ll want to stop at every pretty town to explore and eat . Head to Les Perles de Monte-Carlo, an oyster bar on the Fontvieille pier in Monaco, where billionaires rub shoulders with residents, for an affordable taste of the good life.

At Ventimiglia in Italy, you’ll need to change trains to continue along the coast to Genoa — another spectacular coastal journey — or stop to enjoy the town’s pretty beaches and Roman ruins.

Belgrade to Bar

The railway stretching from the capital of Serbia to the Montenegrin seaport is almost 50 years old, but it has been so neglected it now takes longer to travel the 476km route than when it was officially opened by the Yugoslavian dictator Tito in 1976. Don’t be put off, for if it’s spectacular scenery you’re after, the leisurely speed is an advantage. While it may be a no-frills journey (there are kiosks on board but BYO lunch, drinks , and toilet paper, just in case), the 10-hour route is an engineering marvel with 254 tunnels and 435 bridges making their way through rugged mountains, and traversing wooded valleys dotted with picturesque towns, minarets, and monasteries. The steep and spectacular descent into Podgorica and the Mala Rijeka viaduct crossing are highlights, making the (bargain) price of the ticket, and potential delays and discomfort, all worth it. Tickets are available via each country’s national railways: prevoz.me or srbvoz.rs/en/reservations
