Do you need vaccinations?

Newnham Walk Surgery no longer offers travel advice appointments. We are only able to offer appointments for the administration of those travel vaccines available on the NHS which include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR.

NHS Cholera is individually risk assessed as per NHS guidance, please discuss at appointment if required.

If your required vaccinations are not on this list a Private Travel Clinic (Payment is required) can arrange those for you.

Making an appointment for NHS Vaccines

Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and MMR

Try to make an appointment at least 8 weeks before you travel if possible. Vaccines need time to take effect and some may require a course over several weeks. All Malaria advice and medication MUST also be sourced from private travel clinics.

If you wish to see a nurse for administration of any for any of the above NHS vaccines then please make a DOUBLE appointment where this will be discussed and administered. Depending on the time needed to check you medical records and discuss the vaccines it may be necessary to ask you to return for a second appointment. Please bring all previous vaccine records that you may have to this appointment.

Travel Clinic

travel vaccinations cambridge

Our practice nurses are available by appointment to offer medical advice regarding travel and vaccinations where appropriate to registered patients only . Please submit a request with all your requirements via our online portal  or speak to the Reception Team. Once we have all the necessary information, your notes will be analysed by one of our qualified Nurses, who are trained in travel health management.

Do plan ahead - don't leave your vaccinations until the last minute. Please allow at least  six weeks before you travel.

  • Most vaccinations are best given 6 weeks prior to travel, if you have less time than this before you travel, we will aim to give you the necessary vaccinations. We require at least 6 weeks before you travel otherwise you may have to attend one of the private travel clinics listed below (please note charges will apply and they vary depending on provider)
  • Some vaccinations cannot be given on the same day as others if they are ‘live’ vaccines; this may mean that two or more visits to the Health Centre are required.
  • Some vaccinations have a charge, because the NHS does not fund them. Please note we no longer offer Yellow Fever vaccinations.  To find out more visit:  Private, Professional Fees and Certificates
  • Payment will be expected in full on the day of vaccination.
  • Malaria medication may be required for certain destinations. The Nurse will inform you if you need to do this. This is prescribed on a Private prescription, and the cost will vary depending on which medication you are prescribed and for how long. Please book a telephone consultation with our prescribing pharmacist within the surgery to receive this if required. When you speak to the prescribing pharmacist, you need to know exactly where you are going and for how long. If your travel plans are complex (going in and out of Malaria prone areas) then the prescribing pharmacist may need to see an itinerary.
  • Japanese B Encephalitis is not given at this Health Centre, if you require this you will have to go to one of the private Travel Clinics. A charge will be made.
  • If you have any further queries please speak to a member of the Reception Team.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required

It is important to make the initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

We carried out a review of the data available to us about MASTA Travel Clinic - Cambridge on 6 July 2023. We have not found evidence that we need to carry out an inspection or reassess our rating at this stage.

This could change at any time if we receive new information. We will continue to monitor data about this service.

If you have concerns about MASTA Travel Clinic - Cambridge, you can give feedback on this service .

During a routine inspection

This service is rated as good overall. At our previous inspection, published in June 2018, we did not rate the service but found the provider was compliant in all domains.

The key questions are rated as:

Are services safe? Good.

Are services effective? Good.

Are services caring? Good.

Are services responsive? Good.

Are services well-led? Good.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at MASTA Cambridge as part of our inspection programme and to rate this service.

MASTA Travel Clinic - Cambridge is a private clinic providing travel health advice, travel and non-travel vaccines, blood tests for antibody screening and travel medicines such as anti-malarial medicines to children and adults. In addition, the clinic holds a licence to administer yellow fever vaccines.

This location is registered with CQC in respect of the provision of advice or treatment by, or under the supervision of, a medical practitioner, including the prescribing of medicines for the purposes of travel health.

One of the nurse advisors is the registered manager. A registered manager is a person who is registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the service is run.

We spoke with three patients and received comments cards from four patients about the services they had received. All the feedback we received was positive, particularly in relation to the comprehensive advice, efficient service and friendly and professional staff.

During the inspection we reviewed a range of systems and processes relating to governance, service delivery and customer care.

Our key findings were:

  • The clinic had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. The provider discussed any incidents with the wider corporate team where lessons learned were shared to improve their processes across locations.
  • There was an infection prevention and control policy and procedures were in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. Infection control audits and risk assessments were undertaken and identified actions were completed.
  • Vaccines, medicines and emergency equipment were safely managed. There were clear auditable trails relating to stock control.
  • The provider ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence based guidelines and up to date travel health information.
  • Each patient received an individualised travel health brief tailored to the patient’s specific needs and travel plans. The health brief outlined a risk assessment and all travel vaccinations that were either required or recommended. Specific health information including additional health risks related to their destinations with advice on how to manage common illnesses was also included.
  • Staff had the relevant skills, knowledge and experience to deliver the care and treatment offered by the service.
  • Consultations were comprehensive and undertaken in a professional manner.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. Patients we spoke with and Care Quality Commission comment cards completed prior to our inspection, were all positive about the standard of care received.
  • The service encouraged and valued feedback from patients and staff and acted in response to the feedback received.
  • There was a leadership structure in place with clear responsibilities, roles and systems of accountability to support good governance and management. Staff felt supported by the leadership team and worked well together as a team.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

  • Consider photographic identification checks for adults who have parental responsibility for children, to ascertain the correct identity.
  • Review policies in line with their renewal dates.

Dr Rosie Benneyworth BM BS BMedSci MRCGP Chief Inspector of Primary Medical Services and Integrated Care
