Trip - movie review.

“We are therapists.  Nuts are our specialty.”

This is what despair looks like.  It is cold and hollow, freezing its victims to the very core of their being.  For one mother, it is her daughter’s unnatural suicide which invites this unwelcome visitor in, and she can’t seem to shake its grip.  No bottle.  No pill.  No tear is ever enough to escape the feeling of dread and aloneness in the wake of her daughter killing herself.

Welcome to the Trip .  This movie won’t soon be forgotten.  With heavy themes and a stand-out performance from Last Girl Standing ’s Akasha Villalobos as Ally, the grieving mother, Trip is definitely worth checking out.

Desperate for answers to why Samantha ( Jill Young ) gouged out her own eyeballs, Ally finds herself unable to cope or even return to work.  While her clients are being farmed out to others, she sits alone in her house crying her eyes out.  But an adventurous therapist, Jan Rollins ( Peggy Schott ), has a better idea for Ally.

With the help of a hallucinogenic drug - in the form of tea - Ally can see her daughter again. But is she brave enough to walk through that door?  Because, once it is opened, the door can never be closed again.  

Memories aren’t the only thing wandering these dark nightmarish halls.  Much to the chagrin of Michael ( Major Dodge ), Ally’s husband.  She’s gone, he yells at her.  Yet, still Ally pursues the ghosts she sees in and around the house.  All of them - even the frightening ones wearing masks, but just what is actually happening is anybody’s guess.  

From writer/director Neil McCay and starring “Chucky” star Björgvin Arnarson, Trip is an independent horror film that hits a confident stride in spite of its budgetary limitations and proves to be unsettling, thanks to a great sound design, a solid handling of grief, and an assortment of ghostly images which often had the hair on the back of my neck rising in response to their flickering mannerisms.  They are solidly put together and offer a creative way to handle a microbudget.  

Ally’s search for answers is going to lead her straight into a web of mystery as the same things that haunted her daughter start to fill her own head.  Just what is going on with these identical experiences?  

Sorrow and despair are the villains in the frightening Trip , on Terror Films AVOD Channel Friday, May 13th before a wide digital release on Friday May 20.  While it might be made for the indie-going crowd out there, this one packs a lot of solid scares along the way.

The therapeutic benefits of drugs and ghost stories are thoroughly explored in writer/director Neil McCay’s mind-bending  Trip . Ally Larkin (Akasha Villalobos) no longer leaves the house after her teenage daughter’s brutal suicide. She has abandoned her successful career as a therapist and spends her days on liquor and pills. Instead of sleeping with her husband, Michael (Major Dodge), Ally sleeps in her daughter’s old room, surrounded by drawings of unicorns and lions.

One day a friend leaves a message on Ally’s answering machine about giving her contact info to a miracle-working psychologist specializing in grieving. Soon after, Ally is visited by Jan Rollins (Peggy Schott), who promises her that a radical drug treatment will allow her to see her daughter, Samantha (Jill Young), again. Jan gives Ally a bottle of tea brewed with a hallucinogenic flower, explaining that drinking some of it will open a conduit between this realm and the world of the dead.

Ally is skeptical but keeps the tea, eventually taking a sip. While flipping through Samantha’s sketchbooks, she comes across several drawings of strange figures: a shape wearing a cracked mask in the backyard, a boy with his mouth covered with scarves standing in a school hallway, and a horrible monster with a scarred face, screaming mouth, and no eyes. Then out of the corner of her eye, Ally sees Samantha walking outside. When she looks out the window, she sees the shape with the cracked mask in the backyard staring back at her. Desperate to see more of her daughter, she drinks more tea and sees stranger sights that match the drawings. But Jan becomes concerned as Ally keeps drinking more, and only a little is necessary to breach the barrier between the world of the living and the dead.

Trip  gets right down to it, getting the story rolling right away. McCay’s swift pacing, accompanied by his excellent editing, engaged me completely. The agoraphobia Ally suffers from does an excellent job of covering up the shoestring budget by requiring the film to be shot in her house almost exclusively. While the evil drawings suggest the movie is a bargain-basement  The Babadook , the horror flick comes off as a potent distillation of the elements in  Inland Empire . The therapy sessions with Schott’s character resemble Grace Zabriskie’s mysterious visit to Laura Dern at the beginning of that David Lynch title. It is one of the strongest scenes in the whole thing, and the mechanics that made it work are replicated throughout McCay’s sophomore effort to great effect.

Some pretty good performances in this low budget film.  Special effects were also solid even though we only get a couple they look great. I actually really enjoyed the story too. Third act doesn’t finish as strong as I hoped but it’s mainly because I really wanted this film to end at a specific spot, it would have been a very heavy and impactful finale. It doesn’t end bad at all I just felt it would have been way more memorable of an ending if done earlier.

Right off the back, I dont like the way this movie is shot. It’s obvious that the movie had a low budget with the horror effects they try to use. Ally finds out her daughter Sam has committed suicide by gouging her eyes out. Ally began a grieving over the loss of her daughter and she meets an unconventional therapist who gives her an hallucinogenic tea to help her communicate with the dead and learn about why her daughter did what she did. She begans seeing more than just her daughter Sam, she sees a masked figure who looks like the masked figure from happy death day. Ally starts seeing children in her closet. She realizes that what is seeing…

Gouging out your eyes is an understandable reaction to watching this movie

An interesting concept that’s sadly hindered by very poor execution, I understand this was low budget but could have they at least made this more appealing to look at? Between the acting, writing, filming and so on it ends up being a huge chore to watch that you just want to end.

Austin Texas 2005, a time when Psychedelic rock n roll was not getting any airplay in my hometown, London, England, The Black Angels formed and took to the road. Having saturated my hunger for alternative music with punk and grunge legends of the past, I was on the search for a sound with substance that I could identify with, a time when the mainstream hype bands of the moment were doing nothing for me.It was at this time through my love of bands like Ride and Spacemen 3, I was introduced to the music of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Having grown accustomed to missing out on seeing the groups I loved by decades, it was with excitement I learnt that there was a small bunch of like minded musicians who were very much alive, kicking and touring regularly and as the circus travelled, I found myself caught up in the carnival. In October 2008 I was fortunate enough to be invited on tour with The Black Angels when they took to the road as backing band with 13th Floor Elevators founder, the ultimate inspiration and grandfather of garage psych music, Roky Erickson.

This is an intimate account by documentary photographer and filmmaker Lilly Creightmore, which captures the story of a handful of artists old and new, which influenced a resurgence of psychedelic inspired sound, at a time when a small few of my generation were in search of an alternative from the corporatisation of the music industry, to the capitalist ideal that was beginning to very visibly collapse.

Featuring live performances and intimate behind the scenes footage of bands and musicians from the U.S, U.K, Iceland, Europe and South Africa. Experience the garage psych legend Roky Erickson on tour with current day stalwarts The Black Angels, a one off Spacemen 3 reunion, go behind the scenes with Dead Skeletons,  candid footage with Tess Parks, Anton Newcombe and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Sonic Boom, The Night Beats in Africa, The Underground Youth and Medicine Boy in Berlin and a glimpse into the emerging Global psych scene, with the fans that attend great annual pilgrimages such as Levitation and Desert Daze.

Trip will take you beyond and above, a sensory experience in film!

James McAvoy Faces a Family Trip From Hell in ‘Speak No Evil’ Trailer

The remake of the 2022 Danish psychological horror film hits theaters in September.

Blumhouse is taking viewers on a nightmarish vacation with the first trailer for the English remake of the 2022 Danish horror film Speak No Evil . Unveiled during Universal's panel at CinemaCon , the footage introduces James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis into an initially mundane setting — a family trip with new friends — before twisting it into a psychological terror where kindness becomes questionable and nobody is as they initially seem.

The original Speak No Evil from director Christian Tafdrup emerged from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival with rave reviews for its uncomfortable and incriminating story. Like the original, the remake follows a married couple and their daughter Agnes who meet a similar family of a different background during a trip abroad and hit it off. Weeks later, the couple receives an invitation to stay for a weekend at the other family's idyllic country home, where their initially sincere sweetness quickly becomes more sinister. As they enter into their new friends' lives, the couple is left uneasy by their behavior and begins considering leaving before their stay is meant to end. Before they can depart, however, their little trip spirals into pure hell as dark truths are unveiled, and they realize too late the danger they're in.

Stepping into the shoes of Tafdrup and his brother, Mads Tafdrup , for the remake is writer-director James Watkins . Best known for helming another horror thriller in Eden Lake starring a pre- Yellowstone Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender , he also took charge of the fan-favorite Black Mirror episode "Shut Up and Dance." He has a strong core group to work with in Speak No Evil , with McAvoy and Davis joined by Scoot McNairy alongside Alix West Lefler , Motaz Malhees , Aisling Franciosi , and Kris Hitchen .

'Speak No Evil' Marks McAvoy's Return to Horror

McAvoy and Davis make the perfect pair of stars to join forces on the horror thriller given their impressive resumes and experiences in the genre. Davis has enjoyed a varying career, including a standout role in a Black Mirror episode of her own, " San Junipero ," but for McAvoy, Speak No Evil is a return to the spooky side of cinema after his previous brief stretch killing it as a horror star. He showed off his range as the dissociative identity disorder-diagnosed Kevin Crumb in M. Night Shyamalan 's acclaimed thriller Split in 2016 before going on to reprise the role in Glass in 2019. That same year, he'd take on an even bigger challenge as the adult Bill Denbrough in It: Chapter 2 , further cementing his place in the genre. Together, they look to further the discomfort of the Danish hit and make it stand apart from its predecessor.

Tribeca Festival has revealed its feature film lineup for its 2024 festival, which includes films from actors Lily Gladstone and Michael Cera and documentaries featuring Prince, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton.

The opening night film is documentary “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” directed by Tribeca alumna Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton.

This year’s festival, which runs from June 5-16 in New York City, has a program of 103 feature films from 114 filmmakers spanning 48 countries. The lineup features 86 world premieres, two international premieres, six North American premieres and eight New York premieres.

“In a year of record high submissions, despite industry-wide challenges, and global tumult, our incredible filmmaking community delivered again with some of the most surprising, inspiring, hilarious, galvanizing, boundary-breaking and downright entertaining work we’ve had the privilege to feature at the festival,” said Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Festival director and SVP of programming. “Whether grappling with everything from the crisis of global democracy to the most intimate of human dramas, it was heartening to be reminded of the undeniable power of a great film to illuminate our world.”

The 23rd edition of Tribeca reflects a running theme of political activism and the power of art to spark change in the face of global catastrophe. Part of this year’s lineup is “The Cranes Call,” directed by Laura Warner, which spotlights war crimes investigators for the Clooney Foundation for Justice, led by Amal and George Clooney, as they risk their lives traveling across Ukraine to build cases against Russian soldiers and commanders, and “America’s Burning,” directed by David Smick and narrated by Michael Douglas, which dives into the economic root of hate and division.

“Each year, the Tribeca Festival reflects our culture, capturing the essence of the present moment. The French Italian, (United States) – World Premiere.
