Introduction

Vaishno Devi is among the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Goddess Shakti which is located in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu and Kashmir State in India . In Hindu religion Vaishno Devi, is also known as Mata Rani and Vaishnavi which is believed to be a manifestation of the Mother Goddess. The Shrine of Mother Goddess is one of the most revered and most popular religious centers in Northern India which is visited by around 8 million pilgrims every year. The shrine is situated at an altitude of 5200 feet above sea level and at a distance of approximately 12 km from Katra, a small town in Jammu and Kashmir State of India. This is the only place where these three Goddesses Maa Laxmi, Maa Kali and Maa Saraswati are enshrined in one temple in the form of natural stones or 'pindies'.

Vaishno Devi Tour takes you to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is 30 meter long and just one and a half meter high. It is the famous pilgrimage destination where scores of devotees come to pay homage and seek holy blessings. Majority of the devotees prefer to trek up the 13 km route to the shrine. But there are other options available as well. Tourists can hire a palki or take a pony ride . The state government also offers helicopter services from Katra and Jammu up to the shrine.

Legend of Holy Shrine

Like with the most Hindu religious Shrines it is not possible to ascertain when exactly the pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine started. But the geological study of the Holy Cave indicates that it is nearly a million years old . In the Hindu epic Mahabharata one can find the mention of this holy Shrine. According to Mahabharata legend Arjun, the chief warrior of Pandavas, upon the advice of Sri Krishna meditated upon the Mother Goddess and sought blessings for victory over Kaurvas in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It is said that after the victory Pandavas were the first to build the temples at Kol Kandoli and Bhawan in reverence and gratitude for the Mother Goddess. While some Hindu traditions quote that this Shrine is the holiest of all Shaktipeethas because at this place the skull of Mata Sati fell.

Route to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi

The 13 km hilly track between Katra and holy shrine contains number of ancient temples and view points for pilgrim rejuvenations. The first stop is at Banganga which is located 1 km away from Katra . Here pilgrims can take a dip in Holy River and have food at the Langer (free food) run by famous T-series Industries. From this place one can also see the panoramic beauty of several mountain ranges.

The second stop Charanpadhuka is located about 2.5 km away from Banganga . It is believed that Shri Mata Vaishno Devi took rest here while moving towards the Trikuta Hills. The place contains the footprints of the Goddess, and thus the place is named Charanpadhuka Temple.

The third stop is Ardhkuwari which is also known as Garbh Joon which is located about 3 km from Charanpadhuka . It is believed that Shri Mata Vaishno Devi hid herself from the demon Bairon Nath in this cave for 9 months which makes it the most revered religious place of this region. At this place devotees can visit Adkuwari Temple and Garbhjoon (an ancient Cave of about 20 feet).

After a steep trekking of about 4 km from Adkuwari comes the fourth and last stop Sanjichat . Sanjichat is located at the highest location of the track from where one can enjoy the aerial view of Katra, Udhampur, Reasi and Jammu.

From Sanjichat about 2.5 km downhill track lead to Bhawan the holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi . It the culmination of this pilgrimage where devotees get a chance to worship the Mother Goddess inside the Sanctum Sanctorum- the Holy Cave. The cave is 30 meter long and just one and a half meter high. There are no statues or idols inside the Cave and only three natural rock formations called the Pindies are worshiped which are the forms of Goddess Maa Laxmi, Maa Kali and Maa Saraswati . This cave is open round the clock throughout the year.

The 2 km track from the holy cave lead to the Bairon Nath temple which is visited by almost every devotee as the pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi is considered incomplete without a visit to this temple.

During this whole trek one can get various glimpses of nature which is abundant in flora. The religious atmosphere combined with scenic vistas make this trek enjoyable and interesting.

Katra Vaishno Devi Tour made easy with Cable Car

A cable car connects Bhawan and Bhairav Ghati at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu to make the yatra easier and comfortable for the devotees. Devotees can use this facility with a very minimum fee and avoid the heavy footwork needed for the pilgrimage. There are two cars at present and 45 yatris can travel at a time.

Best Time to Visit

With its sub-tropical climate, the best time to indulge in Vaishno Devi Tourism is from March to November . Do carry heavy woollen clothes during the months of winter. July to September should be avoided due to heavy rains.

By Air: The Satwari Airport in Jammu is located 48 km away.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi, located 47 km away.

By Road: Regular bus services are available from Jammu, Chandigarh, Srinagar, Dalhousie, Amritsar, Kangra and Anantnag to Katra.

Important Travel Information

• Before proceeding for the trek, obtain a Yatra slip from Yatra Registration Counter , near bus stand Katra. The slip is issued free of cost . No one is allowed to proceed beyond Banganga check post without obtaining the Yatra slip.
• In case you wish to avail of the facility of rented accommodation at Katra, Adkuwari, Sanjichhat or Bhawan , please get the room reservation done from the Enquiry and Reservation Counter at Niharika Complex (near the Bus Stand) Katra.
• Kindly confirm the rates of the Porters, Ponies and Palanquins before hiring them and ensure that they carry a valid registration card. Note down their numbers before entrusting them with your valuables. Please do not pay more than the approved rates .
• Video cameras, mobile phones and other electronic equipment are not allowed on the track. Please make arrangements for their safekeeping at Katra itself.
• Travel light. Please leave all unnecessary clothes and luggage at Katra itself. Food, drink and blankets are freely available. There is no need to carry these items along.

How to reach Vaishno Devi Temple:

Vaishno Devi Temple can be reached from Katra either by foot, by battery auto or by helicopter services by professional service providers. Katra is well connected from all the major cities of the country by train. There are both day and night trains available from New Delhi to Jammu Tawi or Katra. We took the newly launched Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Katra. The food served on the train was by far the best.

Vaishno Devi by Foot:

The base camp for Vaishno Devi is located in Katra at a distance of approximately 12kms from the temple. The total time taken to cover this distance is 5 to 6 hours on an average with multiple breaks. The route taken for the same is Katra-Ban Ganga-Charan Paduka-Ardhkuwari-Bhawan( temple). Ardhkuwari is the mid point of the journey. There are multiple pit stops on the way with neat washroom facilities.

Vaishno Devi by Helicopter:

Reaching Vaishno Devi temple by helicopter is one of the most easiest and convenient options. There are two companies who operate from the base camp in Karta to Sanjhi Chhat, the helipad near bhawan. The distance from Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan is less than 3kms. There are options for horses and  palki  near the helipad to take you to the bhawan. This is very helpful for the elderlies.

The food served during the in-room dining is also tasteful and hot when served. 

Tattva, the in-house spa:

A nice massage is all you need post visiting the Vaishno Devi Temple. Tattva, the in-house spa at the Lemon Tree hotel is a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. We opted to go for a foot massage and a full body massage and both the experiences were extremely satisfactory.

Rooms, Staff and Service:

The rooms at the Lemon Tree hotel are decent in size. The layout of the rooms are simple with enough space to move around. The amenities within the room ensure that you have a comfortable stay. 

Timings for Vaishno Devi Temple:

The temple is open 24×7 for the visitors. However, there is an arti which happens twice in a day once before the sunrise and once after the sunset. The duration of the arti is 1.5 hours.

The way to Bhawan is well maintained and has various options for washrooms and chairs to sit if you feel tired. The food options available on the way are good to too. One shouldn’t miss the Kadhi Chawal on the way.

Day 1 : Chandigarh to Manali

On your arrival at Chandigarh railway station / airport you will be met by our driver and he will drive you to Manali. We will stop for lunch break and various picture and comfort breaks on the way. The journey from Chandigarh to Manali is full of secnic views of river, mountains, waterfall.We will stop for lunch break and various comfort breakas at Pandoh Dam, Hanogi devi temple, the Shawl weaving factories and the Vaishno devi temple at Kullu. We will arrive Manali by late afternoon. Overnight stay in hotel in Manali and evening is free to explore the local market of Manali and old Manali.

Day 2 : Manali to Jispa

Today after breakfast we will make a early start and on the way cross the Rohtang pass (3,980 meters/ 13,ooo feet)-- Meaning The Pass Of Corpses.6 months in a year the Rohtaang Pass remain closed due to heavy snowfall.On the other side of Rohtang Pass we entered into the Lahaul valley as soon as we cross the Rohtang pass. Lunch will be in a local eating place at Khoksar and further we continue our drive to Jispa through Tandi and Keylong. We will arrive Jispa by late afternoon, which itself is a very tiny the night at the tiny settlement with a couple of local houses, hotels and camps. Jispa sits at the foot of the mighty 16,000-foot Baralacha Pass at an altitude of some 10,500 feet – again providing valuable acclimatisation time before heading really high on the Manali Leh Road. Overnight stay in a hotel in Jispa.

Day 3 : Jispa to Sarchu

Today after breakfast we will drive you to Sarchu over the our second mountain pass, Baralacha La (4,830 metres/ 15, 847 feet), during the tour. The view from the top is extraordinary. Today we enter from the brown mountains to golden sandy mountains. On the other side of Baralacha descend onto a huge, open plain with an azure river frothing at its centre, surrounded by huge mountains. Sarchu is situated on the border of Jammu-and-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh states and is where we will stay in a fixed tented accommodation in a seasonal camp.

Day 4 : Sarchu To Leh

After breakfast around 07:00 A.M we will leave for Leh. Today we ride through 21 hair pin bends to Lachlung La Pass (5,019 metres/ 16, 467 feet) and enroute we enjoy magnificent views of the Mountains and the valleys. We will also cross Naki La Pass (4,740 metres/ 15,551 feet) before we ride down into the valley to Pang . Today there are chances to see the Snow ibex and the herds of wild Himalayan blue sheep in between Sarchu to Pang. Lunch will be taken at the small eating places with fresh food at village of Pang, before we ride through the vast More Plains The highest of the Tibetan Plateau at 4,200 metres– to Tsokor lake. This region also has rare wild life like the Tibetan wild Ass, wolf, and the elusive Snow Leopard, the black-necked Crane and Tibetan Snow Cock. We Continue driving to Tanglang La pass (5280 Mts.) the second highest Motorable pass in the world that commands breath taking views of the Zanskar range and the upper Indus valley. We stop on the way in the local eating places to sip a cup of tea and while following the Indus river and the spectular mountains views with green fields and purple mountains, sandy landscape we arrive in Leh by evening – the capital of Ladakh valley. Overnight stay at Hotel in Leh.

Day 5 : Local Sightseeing In Leh

Day 6 : leh to deskit / hunder - nubra valley.

After breakfast we will drive you on the Ancient Silk Route from Leh to Nubra valley, over the world’s highest Motorable road Kardungla Pass- 18,380 feet. Arrive at Deskit and check in to your hotel and after lunch drive to Hunder village (2-3 kms) where you can visit the sand dunes and enjoy the ride on double humped Bactrian camel. These double humped camels are left here from the time when silk caravans stopped trading through the old traditional routes carrying the silk from China to Central Asia. Overnight in hotel In Nubra Valley.

Day 7 : Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake

Please Note: Today you need to start early morning drive at 06:00 A.M due to rough road as you have to cross various water streams and shyok river to reach Pangong Lake. The water level rises at day so it is highly recommended to make a early start today morning. Please follow the drivers instructions as early start on some days are the necessity of this Himalayan Road Trip. The driving options from valleys to valleys depends on the road conditions and weather and our local drivers will suggest you the best options.

Day 8 : Pangong Lake to Leh back Over Chang La Pass

Today after breakfast we will return back to Leh driving over Chang La pass (17,500 feet). This morning there are chances to see the marmots, which come out of their holes during the early morning hrs to have sun. Enroute you can also stop in the camps of Nomadic people just before the pass where they are busy grazing their yaks. You can see how they stok butter and make Chura( dry cheese) out of the fresh yak milk.You can also have a cup of tea with the nomadic people. You will also stop to visit the thiksey monastery one of the biggest in Ladakh.Later reach leh and rest of the time is free to explore Leh market. Overnight stay in a hotel in Leh.

Day 9 : Leh to Kargil via Lamayuru Monastery

After Breakfast we will drive you to Kargil. Enroute we will visit Lamayuru Monastery which is the unique and oldest monastery in Ladakh. You can have lunch at Lamayuru and later we will drive you to Kargil, On arrival at Kargil you will check into the hotel and evening is free to walk around the local market in Kargil.

Day 10 : Kargil to Srinagar via Sonmarg

Today after early breakfast we will departs for Srinagar (204 Kms). We will drive you through Drass second coldest place in the world, here we stop for a cup of tea. Here you can visit the Kargil War memorial and can see the famous Peaks Tiger Hill and Tololing Peak. Furhther we drive over Zojila pass 3,527 Metres to Srinagar. We will arrive Sonmarg by afternoon where we will stop for the lunch. Situated at an altitude of 9,000 eet. Sonamarg – is 84 Kms before Srinagar and is also called as “The meadow of gold”, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. Later on drive to Srinagar and arrive Srinagar by early evening. Overnight stay in House boat / hotel.

Day 11 : Local sightseeing around Srinagar

In the morning visit Mogul Garden”Nishat” (The Garden of Pleasure) and “Shalimar” (Abode of All). Drive along the Lake side on Boulevard. On return visit a local Handicrafts Emporium for hand-knotted specialty Silken carpets, shawls, jewellery ornaments. After lunch, proceed for the Old City Tour of Srinagar to visit the Fort & Jamia Masjid. Enjoy 1-2 Hours Boat Ride on Dal Lake by a gondola Boat called ”SHIKARA” witness the ride on lake, called Venice of India & experience the aquatic life Overnight at Houseboat / hotel in Srinagar.

Day 12 : Srinagar - Pahalgaon - Srinagar

Today after breakfast you will drive for a Full Day Trip to Pahalgam, also called as “Valley of Shepherds” situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River, Pahalgam (2,130 metres) is Kashmir’s premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 250C. A number of hotels and lodges cater to all preferences and budgets, from luxurious hotels to unpretentious trekkers’ lodges.

Pahalgam has within it no fewer than eight tiny villages, one of which is Mamal. There is a Shiva temple here, generally considered to be Kashmir’s oldest existing temple, dating to the 5th century. Pahalgam is also associated with the annual Amarnath Yatra. Chandanwari (2,895 m), 16 kms from Pahalgam, is the starting point of the yatra that takes place every year in the month of Sawan (July to August). The road from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is on fairly flat terrain and can be undertaken by car. From Chandanwari onwards the track becomes much steeper, and is accessible on foot or by pony. About 11 kms from Chandanwari is the mountain lake of Sheshnag (3,574 m), after which, 13 kms away is the last stop, Panchtarni. The Amarnath cave is 6 kms away from there. During the month of Sawan, an ice stalagmite forms a natural shivling in the Amarnath cave, which waxes and wanes with the moon. Hot Lunch at a local Restaurant at Pahalgam & later in the afternoon drive back to Srinagar enroute stop at 9th century old temple ruins of Avantivarman, the rulers of kashmir from the varma dynasty. The Place used to be the capital of Kashmir during the Hindu Ruler & during 11th Century it is said that the heavy floods from the nearby Jhelum River made the Temple Complex to sink down under the sand & silt of River. Later during British Rule, one of the Indian Archeologist, Daya Ram Sahani excavated this temple complex, now is left as the ruins and few of the Shiva Statues & Goddesses have been taken to the main Museum in Srinagar. Later Drive back to Srinagar.

Day 13 : Srinagar - Gulmarg - Srinagar

Today after breakfast we will drive you to Gulmarg via Srinagar Bye-Pass. Gulmarg, called as “Meadow of Flowers”. Gulmarg is 53 Kms from Srinagar at an altitude of 8700 – ft. Gulmarg also referred as Meadow of Flowers is a famous Ski Resort & the world’s highest 18 hole Golf Course. The place was prominent during the British time. Gulmarg’s legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill resorts in the country. Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty- it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country’s premier ski resort in the winter. On arrival Check in at Hotel. The journey to Gulmarg is half the enchantment of reaching their, roads bordered by rigid avenues of poplar give over to flat expanses of rice fields interspersed with picturesque villages. Depending on the season, nature’s colors could be the translucent green of spring, summer’s rich emerald, or autumn’s golden hues, when scarlet chilies festoon windows of village homes. After Tangmarg, the climb to Gulmarg begins through fir-covered hillsides. At one point, known simply as View Point, travelers generally stop their vehicles for a few minutes and look out a spectacle of snow-covered mountains, almost within touching distance. Return back for Dinner & Overnight at Deluxe Houseboat / hotel in Srinagar.

Day 14 : Fly from Srinagar

Today after Breakfast you will be driven and drop at the Srinagar airport to board your return flight back to Delhi. met by our driver at Srinagar airport and transfer to Houseboat / hotel in Srinagar.Later evening Enjoy 1-2 Hours Boat Ride on Dal Lake by a gondola Boat called ”SHIKARA” witness the ride on lake, called Venice of India & experience the aquatic life. Return back for Dinner & Overnight at Deluxe Houseboat / hotel.

This is where the tour ends. However, if you wish to stay longer in Srinagar / Delhi or want to take a road trip from Srinagr to Jammu / Pathankot or Amritsar we can make arrangements for it / or to be transferred to the airport / railway station at a later time.

Please Note: The same tour can continue further to Jammu / Pathankot/ Amritsar or to Chandigarh Back at the end and will increase 4-5 days in the tour.
