The Cost of Travel in Uganda: A Detailed Budget Breakdown

Otherwise known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda has so much to offer. It might be a bit less touristy and sought-after compared to its popular neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, but that’s part of its charm. When it comes to scenery, culture, wildlife, adventure, and people, Uganda hits the right notes every time. 

I visited Uganda on vacation while living in Tanzania , and I didn’t really know what to expect. But I was quickly drawn in by how comfortable I felt. Not to mention, everywhere I turned there was something beautiful to see. 

Uganda is one of the few places in the world that you can see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. And seeing these these animals up close in their natural habitat is a life-changing experience. Furthermore, compared to gorilla trekking in Rwanda , the costs of a tour and permit are much cheaper in Uganda. 

Besides gorilla trekking, Uganda is home to some incredible national parks. It’s also the perfect place for adventure enthusiasts — from bungee jumping to white water rafting, there’s tons of things that you can easily cross off the bucket list here. 

All in all, I’d say Uganda is a top-tier budget destination for the region, especially given that the cost of some of the activities that you can engage in are significantly more affordable than they might be in other destinations. With that in mind, what are you waiting for? East Africa’s best kept secret has gems just waiting to be explored and adored. 

What’s Included in this Post 

This budget breakdown covers how much I spent on accommodation, transportation, activities, and food while I travelled around the country.

I’ve not included my flights into and out of Uganda as this is going to vary significantly based on where you’ll be arriving from.

The amounts in this guide are listed in U.S. dollars, simply because the vast majority of my readers are from the U.S. I also included some prices in Ugandan shillings (UGX), as this is the local currency that you will use the most. 

Okay — let’s get started!

The Cost of Accommodation in Uganda 

Budget accommodation is easy to find in Uganda. The best accommodation options in Uganda are hotels and guesthouses, with the occasional hostel. 

Ugandan hotels are priced pretty reasonably and you can expect to pay around $15 – $20 for a place that has all the basics. On the other hand, higher-end stays might cost you more in the $50 – $100 range , but you will only really find places like this in the larger cities and more popular destinations. If you’re planning on doing a safari of some sort and staying in one of the lodges, then expect to pay upwards of $500+ per night .

Here’s a list of my favourite accommodation options in Uganda :

Kampala —   TGS Homestay ($30 a night): As you start your Uganda travels in Kampala, there’s no better place to stay than here. Not only are you within walking distance from good restaurants, supermarkets and malls in Kampala’s city centre, you’re also in good hands thanks to the kind and generous host. Emmanuel will do everything he can to make your stay worthwhile.  Whether you need an airport pick-up, local sim card, bus tickets or recommendations—he’ll help you with anything. The rooms and common areas are also kept clean and tidy. So you can comfortably gather with other travelers, or cook your own food in the kitchen if you don’t feel like eating out.  The shared kitchen also offers unlimited tea, coffee and drinking water for your convenience!

Jinja —  Jinja BaseCamp ($15 a night): A trip to Uganda would not be complete without some time spent in Jinja, also known as East Africa’s adrenaline capital. Here you can do white-water rafting along the Nile River or bungee jumping. With all this adventure around you, stay at Jinja BaseCamp for a comfortable and rejuvenating rest. The value is excellent for what you get, which includes an outdoor pool, breakfast, and clean rooms. Surrounded by lush nature in a serene environment, but still close enough to Jinja centre, you can easily settle into relaxation mode before and after your daily activities. The standout of this place though, is the friendly staff who are attentive and create a warm environment for guests to feel at home right away. 

Gulu — Northern Pearl ($22 a night): Gulu is a relaxed city in northern Uganda, and it’s a great stop along the way to exploring some of the country’s most exquisite natural beauty and wildlife at Kidepo Valley National Park. That being said, there’s not many options of places to stay. Look no further than Northern Pearl, a sweet hotel in Gulu with comfortable rooms and a restaurant serving up delicious, quality Indian food. The owner and staff are incredibly welcoming and if you’re there on a Friday night, you can also enjoy a comedy show!

Fort Portal — Dutchess Hotel and Restaurant ($27 a night): Fort Portal is a beautiful town in western Uganda that is surrounded by the Ruwenzori Mountain range. A good launching point for nearby adventures and activities is this hotel located just outside the city center, but close enough to walk into town. It’s a comfortable hotel with clean rooms, friendly staff and is known for its restaurant that serves some of the best food in town (so you’ll never go hungry!). Whether you want to explore by foot, bicycle or car, the staff will help you sort out any travel arrangements. This hotel also makes an effort to reduce their ecological footprint by using more solar heaters and local fast-growing wood to make furniture.

Mbarara —  Nyore Hillside Retreat ($51 a night): If you’ve included Mbarara in your itinerary, then you have to stay at this gorgeous natural haven. Enjoy the lush countryside and majestic green rolling hills by day and then be prepared to watch the stars in all their glory as day turns to night. Besides the idyllic location, the food is exceptional and cooked to order. They even grow and roast their own coffee beans! The staff are always willing to help and make any arrangements necessary to ensure your stay is memorable, including guided hikes of the area.

The Cost of Transportation in Uganda 

If you’re planning on traveling extensively throughout Uganda, then you’ll likely be taking buses or minibus-taxis to get from city to city. Otherwise, when you’re in a city, boda-bodas (motorcycle taxi), minibus-taxis or walking will be your main way of getting around. 

Here are the most common forms of transportation in Uganda: 

Bus : There’s plenty of bus and coach services in the country to help you travel around the country. Nearly all towns and cities in Uganda are linked by bus. Plus, this is a very affordable and convenient way to get around. Just be prepared to take the bus with low expectations. Getting from place to place might take longer than you expect because of road conditions and 

The bus companies most commonly used for long-distance travel include: Horizon Coaches, Easy Coach, Link Bus Services, Post Bus, and Global Coaches Uganda. Most of the common bus companies offer busses travelling to cities like Mbale, Mbarara, Gulu, Fort Portal, and Jinja. On average, a one-way bus fare to most places will cost around 40,000 – 60,000 Ugandan shillings ($11 – $16) . 

The main way to book bus tickets is by either going to the bus station physically or calling the bus company directly. When you’re taking the bus, the most reliable time table of departure times will be at the bus station in whatever city/town you’re leaving from. I would recommend going to the bus station the day before to purchase your ticket as some of the more popular routes sell out fast!

Minibus-taxis : There’s never any shortage of minibuses in Uganda (also referenced as Matatus). You’ll notice these blue and white vans as soon as you arrive. They are one of the most common, and most affordable means of getting around, especially within a city or town. However, unlike busses, they don’t run on a set schedule; but rather, they leave when full. In this case, full often means packed like a can of sardines. So be prepared to feel crammed in. Most routes cost 1000 Ugandan shillings ($0.28) .

Boda bodas (Motorbike Taxi) : Taking a Boda Boda is one of the most popular (and most exciting) ways to get around in Uganda. That being said, riding one should be approached with caution, and don’t do it unless you feel comfortable. Either get the number of a driver that your accommodation recommends or use a mobile app such as SafeBoda where the drivers are properly trained on road safety and always carry a helmet for the passenger. This also takes away the pressure from negotiating prices with the driver because it’s all taken care of in the app! Rides usually start at around 1,500 – 17,000 Ugandan shillings ($0.42 – $5) depending on the distance.

Taxi : Also known as ‘Special Hires’ in Uganda, private taxis are a comfortable and reliable way of getting around and may be helpful in some cases. Though, this will be on the pricier side in comparison to the other methods of transport. If you are going to take a private taxi, ensure you take a trusted driver, preferably recommended by your accommodation, and negotiate the fare before getting in. The taxi starting rate is around 4,500 Ugandan shillings ($1.30) and then 2,000 shillings ($0.56) for every 1km. If you were interested in hiring a car for a day, the price can range from $50 – $100 . 

The Cost of Food in Uganda

You have plenty of food to choose from in Uganda, from local eats to western fare — take your pick, and all at reasonable costs! When it comes to local cuisine, some of the most popular Ugandan dishes include matoke (bananas), cassava (manioc), sweet potatoes, white potatoes, yams, beans, peas, ground nuts (peanuts), cabbage, and pumpkin. 

A standout street food for me was Rolex, a popular choice amongst locals and travellers for an easy snack. Rolex is made by mixing chapati with fried egg to make an omelette and then rolling cabbage, tomato and onion into it to form a wrap-like shape. Simple, yet so delicious.

When eating from local stands or at inexpensive restaurants, an average meal will cost around 8,000 – 10,000 Ugandan shillings ($2.30 – $2.82) . So if you decide to eat mostly local fares, you can easily spend around 20,000 – 25,000 Ugandan shillings ($5 – $7) per day . Not bad at all!

But if you’re like me, and want to integrate some variety in your meals throughout the day, then there’s plenty of mid-range restaurants serving up delicious eats. One of my favourite things to do in bigger cities is go cafe-crawling. Kampala has a vibrant coffee culture scene and some of my top picks included Cafe Javas and Prunes. When eating out at a more mid-range or western style cafe, you might expect to spend around 30,000 – 50,000 Ugandan shillings ($8 – $14 ) per meal. 

If you have access to a kitchen during your stays and want to shop at the markets or local grocery stores, then you’ll probably average around 50,000 Ugandan shillings ($14) for a bill that includes some protein, fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

The Cost of Activities and Entrance Fees in Uganda 

Now, I don’t know about you, but when I was planning for my trip to Uganda, I simply had one thing on my mind: gorillas.

This region of Africa is the only place in the world where you can find wild mountain gorillas, and they’re still a rare breed: just 800 of these beautiful animals remain in the world.

If you have the means, I would also put gorilla trekking at the top of your Uganda experiences list. Keep in mind that the best time of year to go gorilla trekking is in June, July, or August for peak weather conditions. 

Hands down, one of the best places to experience adventure is in Jinja. Also known as the adrenaline capital of East Africa, you can partake in some dare-devil activities like bungee jumping or you can take a boat ride to see the Source of the Nile, which is the starting point of the longest river on earth. 

I did a one-day tour from Kampala to experience some of Jinja’s top sights, including the source of the Nile, Mabira Forest, and Sezibwa Falls. This was a great way to experience Jinja with a short amount of time, and I would definitely recommend it. 

Then when it comes to national parks and wildlife, you have plenty of options to go on the safari of your dreams. Notable parks include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park. 

Below is a breakdown of some of the costs you might expect for the top attractions in Uganda. Keep in mind that this mostly consists of just entrance fees. For safaris or trekking, your final prices will change depending on the company you hire and the length of stay. 

Here’s a breakdown of some popular attractions in Uganda and their respective costs: 

• Kidepo Valley National Park: $40 per person, per day
• Mountain Gorilla Trekking (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park): ~$970 per person for a 1-day tour with another person 
• Queen Elizabeth National Park: $40 per person, per day 
• Murchison Falls National Park: $40 per person, per day
• Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: $50 per person for 1-2 hours
• White water rafting on the Nile River: $125 per person (Half-Day Rafting)
• Bungee Jumping: $115 per person
• 1-day Jinja Tour (incl. source of the Nile Tour): $145 per person

Miscellaneous Expenses in Uganda

A local SIM card:  I don’t know about you, but one of my least favourite aspects of arriving in a new country is having to figure out how to get connected. Specifically: buying a local SIM card so that I have data to use while I’m in the country.

There’s locating a store that will sell you one, language barriers to deal with, various forms of ID you might need to bring, scams to navigate, and… well, it’s a headache.

This year, I started using  Airalo , which sells local e-SIM cards for travellers. What that means is that you can buy your SIM card online  before  you arrive in Uganda, and then as soon as you land in the country, you can switch on your data and start using it. It’s worked flawlessly for me and I’ll never go back to physical SIM cards. You’ll pay  $9 for 1 GB of data  or $35 for 5 GB of data and can top-up instantly on your phone through the Airalo app.

The Cost of Travel Insurance in Uganda

If you’ve read any other posts on Never Ending Footsteps, you’ll know that I’m a great believer in travelling with travel insurance. I’ve seen far too many Go Fund Me campaigns from destitute backpackers that are unexpectedly stranded in a foreign country after a scooter accident/being attacked/breaking a leg with no way of getting home or paying for their healthcare. These costs can quickly land you with a six-figure bill to pay at the end of it.

In short, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Travel insurance  will cover you if your flight is cancelled and you need to book a new one, if your luggage gets lost and you need to replace your belongings, if you suddenly get struck down by appendicitis and have to be hospitalised, or discover a family member has died and you need to get home immediately. If you fall seriously ill, your insurance will cover the costs to fly you home to receive medical treatment.

I use  SafetyWing  as my travel insurance provider, and recommend them for trips to Uganda. Firstly, they’re one of the few companies out there who will actually cover you if you contract COVID-19. On top of that, they provide worldwide coverage, don’t require you to have a return ticket, and even allow you to buy coverage after you’ve left home. How Much Does it Cost to Travel in Uganda? 

It’s time to tally up all of my expenses to see my total travel costs! It might seem like the total average amount is high, but that’s because you’re likely to experience some activity that adds on to the final amount spent. Uganda is a good country to spend more on experiences anyways!

• Accommodation: $25 per day
• Transportation: $15 per day
• Food: $20 per day
• Activities/Entrance Fees: $145 per day

Average amount spent in Uganda: $205 a day!

How to Travel Uganda on a Budget

She’s writing about how to save money in Uganda, a country I have longed to visit but still haven’t gotten around to doing. Alicia shares her tips and tricks to save on your next visit!

The magnificent and diverse color, vegetation, and wildlife of Uganda so inspired Winston Churchill that he nicknamed this East African country “the pearl of Africa,” a name that has stuck ever since.

Since shedding its violent reputation after a volatile period during the 1980s, Uganda has changed a lot. In particular, it’s invested resources into developing its wealth of national parks, largely aimed toward the repopulation of wildlife and the conscious development of infrastructure to help make its vast wilderness accessible.

Although East Africa is known for its expensive high-end lodges and activities, Uganda is more affordable than some of its neighbors. It spoils adventure-seekers with its bounteous nature. In a relatively compact and easily navigable area, one can trek with mountain gorillas in dense jungle, visit coffee and tea plantations, relax by volcanic lakes, drive through savannah abundant in tree-climbing lions and other wildlife, hike snow-capped mountains, and raft down rapids in the Nile River! The Uganda visa is affordable and easy to get too!

Uganda has enthralled me since I first started visiting in 2010 and, over numerous visits, I’ve only developed a deeper appreciation for it. In this post, I want to share that love for the country and help you travel Uganda on a budget!  

How to Save Money on Transportation

Boda Bodas (motorbikes) – Public motorbikes, known as boda bodas, are dirt cheap in areas such as Jinja and Kampala but are more difficult to find in rural areas and around national parks. While they are the most cost-effective form of transportation — between 5,000-6,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) ($1.50-2 USD), though prices are always negotiable — exercise caution when using boda bodas, as they have a reputation for being quite dangerous: helmets aren’t provided, and drivers are known for being reckless.

However, Safe Boda and Uber, which connect passengers with drivers through their respective apps, have recently come to Kampala and provide much more reliable drivers and standardized pricing, with minimum fares starting at 5,000-6,000 UGX ($1.50-1.60 USD).

Matatus (local buses) – Local minibuses, known as matatus, are an inexpensive — though not altogether easy — way to get around Kampala. Matatus also run between different regions in Uganda, often without a set schedule, and leave once the bus has filled up.

Prices depend on route, though they are generally around 500-2,000 UGX ($.20-.25 USD). To catch one, just wave down one of these rundown white vans from the side of the road — but be warned that they are usually cramped and filled beyond capacity.

Taxis – Taxis are the most expensive way to get around cities, though also the safest. Prices are always negotiable, though expect to pay between 15,000 and 40,000 UGX ($4–11 USD) for a ride, depending on distance and time of day.

Coach Buses – Coach buses, run by a number of companies, are used to travel long distances within Uganda as well as to other East African destinations, such as Mombasa and Kigali. Costs are dependent on the route but generally run around 55,000 UGX ($13.50 USD) for a ten-hour journey.

Private Car Renting a car is an ideal way to independently explore Uganda and go deeper into some of the parks where public transportation does not go. Cars can be hired with or without a driver, as well as with or without camping equipment.

Although not necessary, a driver can be handy not only in navigating potholed roads but also by providing a wealth of historical and cultural insights and in spotting wildlife on safari. A reliable company I have used is Lifetime Safaris , which offered a safari rental car with starting at $60-80 USD/day. Your Drive Uganda offers rental cars from $30-40 USD a day and you can hire a car with a driver for $60 a day.  

How to Save Money on Accommodation

Hostels – There are only a handful of hostels in Uganda, mostly in Kampala. Red Chilli offers dorms at its property in Kampala for $12 USD/night and basic rooms for $30-45 USD, and Om Bunyonyi on Lake Bunyonyi in southwestern Uganda provides dorms for $15 USD/night or $45 USD for a private room.

Guesthouses – Guesthouses can vary widely in cost. A decent-quality one with relatively reliable facilities in touristic areas, such as Om Bunyonyi, runs around $25 USD/night for a double private room, though expect prices to be much higher around national parks. If you don’t book in advance and are stopping through a small town for the night, you can easily find very simple guesthouses for far less, approximately $14 USD/night. Water and electricity will often be unreliable in this style of accommodation, however.

Camping – Camping is a great option in the regions surrounding the national parks, such as Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, though prices will vary by location. At its site in Murchison Falls, Red Chilli offers camping for $8 USD/night. Other sites and lodges offer camping for $8–12 USD/night. Many places offer tents for rent, though bringing your own equipment will save you even more money.

Eco-lodges – Budget-consciousness is probably not what you have in mind when you think “eco-lodge,” given the trend toward fancy eco-friendly safari lodges in East Africa. However, lodges and safari camps are a prominent form of accommodation in the national parks, and not all of them have to break the bank! There are some reasonably priced ones that still can be a nice splurge on a budget holiday. They can cost around $100 USD per night and usually include three meals a day as well, reducing other daily costs.  

How to Save Money on Food and Drinks

Restaurants – Kampala has an extensive international restaurant scene. They are expensive in comparison to local restaurants, though cheaper than eating out in Europe or North America and cheaper also than similar restaurants in other major East African cities. Costs range from 30,000 to 70,000 UGX ($8–20 USD) for an average meal.

Local cuisine, in contrast, is fairly simple — consisting largely of potatoes, rice, beans, cabbage, chapati (unleavened flatbread), and ugali (maize flour porridge) — and much more affordable. There are many Ethiopian restaurants as well, offering more mid-range meals.

Food-on-the-go – Uganda has a handful of street food items, the most famous being an egg and chapati wrap known as a “rolex,” which can also have different vegetables added and cost as little as 1,500–3,000 UGX ($0.40–0.80 USD). Stock up on fresh tropical fruit, which is abundant in markets and along the road; the price is always up for negotiation.

Inexpensive roadside food and snack stands selling corn, samosas, nuts, and grilled meat are also prevalent and convenient on long trips. Eating in these ways can save significant costs in Uganda.

Drinks – Foreign-import wine and spirits can be found in Kampala, though cocktails and wine are costly in the capital city’s posh bars, restaurants, and clubs. Your best bet is to stick with local beers such as Nile, which should cost 4,000–9,000 UGX ($0.80–2.40 USD), depending on the venue you buy it from. Or try out Uganda’s local gin, called Waragi, at around 1,000 UGX ($0.25 USD) a pour. This potent liquor becomes more tolerable when mixed with a good dose of tonic water and lime.

Adventure Activities Costs

However, it is easy to intersperse those activities with low-cost days of relaxing by crater lakes, taking self-guided walks in the mountainous areas of southwestern Uganda, or volunteering. On those days, you can spend $30 USD/day or even less!

Here are some typical adventure-activity costs:

• Queen Elizabeth National Park : $40 USD/day for admission
• Murchison Falls : $40 USD/day for admission
• Rafting : $144 USD/per person for 5-6 hours
• Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale : $150 USD/permit
• Gorilla trekking in Bwindi : $700 USD/permit

Other Tips for Saving Money in Uganda

• Explore beyond the high-priced attractions – Regions outside of the major attractions are still abundant in nature and are often more captivating, as there are few to no tourists. Think volcanic lakes, little-known mountains, rarely visited waterfalls, almost-deserted islands, and dense forests and coffee and tea plantations.
• Travel during the off-season – Don’t let the rainy season scare you off! Uganda is at its most lush during the rainy months (March to May and October to November), crowds are at a minimum, and permits and lodging are often discounted to encourage tourism.
• Travel off the beaten path – Check out Lake Bunyonyi, the Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria, and Sipi Falls, for example. If you’re looking to do trekking in the region, the Rwenzoris are worth considering — while they aren’t “cheap,” they are a much more affordable option than Mt. Kilimanjaro and you can do shorter or longer treks depending on your time and budget.
• Consider volunteering – Avoid volunteer programs that charge money, but consider looking into opportunities such as those on Workaway , which will help save money on accommodation and offer a more in-depth cultural experience.
• Booking advice – Booking gorilla and trekking permits in advance is advisable to ensure a place, since permits are limited, but skip booking package safaris, as tour company costs are much higher than if one travels independently.
• Stay for a longer time – This might initially sound counterintuitive, but a longer stay means you won’t necessarily only be concentrating on the major tourist attractions. You’ll also have a better idea of how to navigate local transportation and become better acquainted with some of the regional cultures and smaller, underrated rural areas.
• Bring a reusable water bottle – To ensure your water is clean and safe (and to avoid spending money on single-use plastic) bring a reusable water bottle and a filter. LifeStraw makes a bottle with a built-in filter that ensures your water is safe and clean — no matter where in the world you are.

With the ever-increasing impact of globalization, once off-the-beaten-path locales are being put on the map. Much of Uganda still remains raw and less developed, though its increasingly improving infrastructure makes it the perfect destination for adventure travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Development and prices are already on the rise so don’t hesitate to explore this wild and beautiful East African nation before the secret is out!

Our family travelled in Uganda with Mukisa Safaris for 6 days. We had limited time and wanted to fit in as much as we could. Richard catered to all of our wishes, and more. We did a a day safari where we saw 4 of the Big Five at very close quarters. We did Gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking, an afternoon in a traditional village, leaning so much from the inhabitants and having such fun with them. Lastly we did a city tour in Kampala. In all, I cannot praise Richard enough, he was so patient and diligent when we were planning the holiday. He answered every email promptly and with all the information that we required. He even catered for a fourth member of our family being added after it had all been booked. I cannot leave this review without mentioning our guide, Allen and our driver. Solomon. They went over and above to make sure that we got the most out of every experience. They were great fun and, by the time we left I felt that they had blended into our family group as one of us. We all felt very sad to be leaving them. In a nutshell, I cannot recommend this company enough.

This was a return to Uganda where we worked for two years as volunteers 50 years ago. Bosco provided a modified 11day tour for us to include more time in places we wanted to revisit. He was terrific. Our travel consultant from DAS was extremely helpful when my friends and I were planning our weeklong Gorillas Trek and Safari. He was very detailed when answering our questions and had nice suggestions for better and cheaper lodges than our initial request. Gorillas permits were also cheaper in Uganda. We did a mix of water on Kazinga channel, chimps in Kibale and gorillas in Bwindi which was absolutely incredible with Herbert. He made our trip very interesting with his valuable input and experience tracking animals on the game drives. Meeting with friendly Batwa pygmies was also very nice. Everything was well laid out and we have no complaints about anything. I recommend DAS and hope my friends also share their appreciation soon.

What people love about Uganda Tours

Let me start by saying that booking our Uganda/Rwanda safari through Mukisa was truly one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made! I am the type of person that meticulously plans every trip and will read through countless reviews, itineraries, etc. before making a decision. For this trip in particular, we were looking for a private tour that had a wide range of activities from multiple treks to game drives and cultural experiences. What initially drew me to Mukisa was the positive feedback from other guests and a mention on their website that they encourage/aid female tour guides. Upon reaching out through their website, I was immediately impressed with Richard’s quick responses, level of detail and ability to accommodate all of our requests. We started with the “10 Days Safari to Encounter Uganda’s Gorillas, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour” but Richard was able to help us customize the trip and integrate other activities that we were interested in - for example, my husband and I wanted to include a bike ride at the end of our trip. We originally didn’t think this could be part of our safari experience so reached out to a few local bike companies but received no responses. I posed the question to Richard (thinking it would be difficult to accommodate) and within 24 hours, he had found us a bike guide and adjusted our trip’s itinerary. Richard showed a tremendous amount of professionalism throughout the planning process, and loved that he met us in-person at the start of our trip! In terms of the actual safari, I could write several pages on all of the things that we loved but I’ll keep it to a few highlights: 1. The safari had an incredibly wide range of things to do, see, explore, etc. - from the types of animals (we were able to see the Big 5!) to the environments, ranging from jungle to forest to savannah. It was a lot to squeeze into 11 days but we truly feel like we left Uganda/Rwanda with a well-rounded experience. 2. All of the accommodations were conveniently located, clean and comfortable. If possible, we would recommend staying at the same hotel for at least 2 nights/each so you can feel settled and potentially upgrading 1-2 hotels, if you’re looking for additional amenities (e.g. swimming pool). Elephant Hab was our favorite hotel in Uganda. 3. We absolutely adored our guide & driver! Most of the other tour groups that we encountered had a single male guide/driver and we loved that Mukisa prioritized giving opportunities to female guides. Mable and Solomon went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and even made adjustments to the itinerary on the fly. Mable had a wealth of knowledge about the animals, culture, people, etc. and Solomon was an exceptional driver - making sure we saw all of the animals on our bucket list and navigating the constantly changing conditions. 4. It was quite clear that Mukisa has a strong reputation in the safari community. Several of the hotel managers and rangers made comments to us that they always enjoy working with Mukisa, and they have some of the best guides/drivers. If you’ve made it this far through my review then I hope you’re now considering Mukisa for your upcoming trip. I do not typically write extensive reviews but I genuinely think that this company is one of the best out there and will make this trip everything you could’ve imagined and more!

Travel Tips

• Be prepared to pay for your entry tourist visa to Uganda, which costs about USD 50. The visa can be paid upon entering the country, or online before you travel.
• The term “mzungu” means ‘white person’, and any white-skinned visitors to Uganda should expect to hear this called out to them regularly as they roam the streets. This is not necessarily a sign of disrespect, and should be embraced!
• Uganda is a fairly conservative country. Avoid touching members of the opposite sex in public, and women should dress modestly when holidaying in Uganda. This is especially true in busy cities.
• Be sure to ask your doctor for malaria tablets before travelling to Uganda to avoid being exposed to the mosquito-borne disease.
• The use of credit cards is limited in Uganda. If you’re lucky enough to find a shop that allows card payment, expect to pay a fee of around 5%. Be sure to always carry some cash, US dollars being the currency of choice.

33 Things To Know Before You Travel To Uganda in 2024

Traveling in Uganda is one big off the beaten path adventure. It won’t be anything like your standard trip in Europe or the States and although it simply requires a little more planning, traveling to Uganda is a lifetime experience. While many travelers visit Uganda for the mountain gorilla trekking, the country has so much more to offer. Some people are still in the understanding that Uganda is unsafe, but don't worry. In this Uganda travel blog you can read everything you should know before traveling to Uganda.

No country is perfect and surely not here in Eastern Africa, but its imperfections will make your Uganda trip one to remember. Planning a Uganda holiday doesn’t need to be difficult, especially now that Uganda tourism is growing rapidly and even a DIY trip is possible since the country is actually investing heavily in infrastructure.

1. Do you need a visa to travel to Uganda

Almost all countries will need a visa when traveling to Uganda. Check out the visa policy for Uganda here. E-visas can be purchased online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration . This is the only authentic Visa Application Portal for Uganda visas and it costs $50, exclusive service fee.

Avoid other (fraudulent) portals where you’ll pay much more for your Uganda visa! 

Visa on arrival

There is still the opportunity to get a visa on arrival for Uganda, but only at the land borders and kind of unofficially. Some travelers I know still managed to get a visa on arrival crossing overland from Kenya in November 2021, but officially the E-visa replaced all visa on arrivals for Uganda. So Traveltomtom recommends getting the e-visa for Uganda.

When flying to Uganda, an e-visas is mandatory. The Uganda e-visa is quick and easy, but also a little work as they require a passport-copy, recent passport-size photograph and your yellow fever vaccination certificate. Click here to apply for an e-visa for Uganda .

Traveltomtom traveled overland from Bukoba in Tanzania to Masaka in Uganda in May 2021. The whole border process took him just about 5 minutes. Just have your $50 or $100 bill ready and a visa on arrival will be fixed in just a couple minutes.

Eastern African Community single tourists visa

If you are planning to travel to Kenya and Rwanda on the same trip the Eastern African Community tourists visa is worth applying. This visa is a single entry tourist visa for these three countries, but within its borders it is multiple entry. It cost $100 and is valid for 90 days. As soon as you leave one the 3 countries, it loses its validity.

2. Do I need vaccinations to travel to Uganda

First of all, yes you do need shots to visit Uganda as without a Yellow Fever vaccination certification you can not obtain a visa. They actually check it at the border. On top of that it is also advised you get vaccinations for DTP, Hepatitis A and malaria. Some organizations may advice you to take Typhoid, Cholera, Hepatitis B and Rabies as well.

At the moment a negative PCR test within 72 hours is also required to travel to Uganda. It does not make a difference if you are vaccinated or not, everyone needs a negative PCR test. Obviously Covis regulations change all the time, therefore I recommend you to have a look at the 

BTW if you travel to Uganda you will see NO signs of covid, not in the big cities, not in the countryside. Wearing a mask is officially mandatory in some places, but hardly ever enforced nor is anyone wearing a mask (properly).

Leaving Uganda and looking to do a PCR test? Easy, easy. You can do them almost everywhere in the labs of the bigger cities as well as on the land borders. For $50 you can do one at the border of Kenya and also at the Tanzania land border and waiting time for the result is 4-6 hours. In the bigger cities you pay between 200,000 ($70) and 280,000 ($100). Waiting time is 24 hours, but in reality results are returned by whatsapp/email within 4-6 hours.

3. Is there Malaria in Uganda

There is a risk of Malaria throughout the country and therefore all Uganda travel guides will recommended you to take Malaria medication. in 2018, Traveltomtom writer Kim Paffen traveled on a 3 week itinerary around Uganda , she decided to use malaria medication. Traveltomtom however did not during his 2 weeks in Uganda in May and August. If you go to the Northern areas and for example travel to Murchison Falls, most travelers take malaria pills.

In general the most important is to protect yourself against mosquito bites and it can be as simple as wearing long pants and sleeves just before sunset. If you want a plant based medicinal protection against malaria, have a look into using Artemisia .

4. Is it safe to travel to Uganda

Uganda is generally considered to be a safe country with low crime rates. Both Kim and Traveltomtom felt completlely safe all the time! Just avoid travel by road outside major towns at night. It’s also adviced to gather the latest travel information when traveling to the South Sudan border region and Karamoja in the very north. There have some problems reported regarding the so called Kenyan Warriors, but not against tourists.

However, visiting Kidepo Valley National Park, which lies close to the border with South Sudan is totally fine. Simply use common sense at all times, take care of your belongings and be aware of your surroundings and one should be totally fine traveling in Uganda.

Since the global pandemic crime rates have gone up according to locals, but Traveltomtom visited Kampala and there was not a moment he felt uneasy or anything like that. He was told not to take out his iPhone in public too much, as they snatch phones from tourists these days.

But as you know Traveltomtom films everything for his Instagram stories and it was no issue at all. Just be smart about when and where and how! I also took my group trip to visit Kampala and even with 3 ladies it was fine. Just a little intimidating at times.

5. Can you drink the tap water in Uganda

Well let me first advice you to just not drink the tap water in Uganda! Yes, we also want to reduce single-use plastic, but most of the tap water in Uganda is just not made for drinking. At least not for Western stomachs. You just don't want to ruin you Uganda trip by being brave and trying to drink the tap water. It is not worth it. However, it is totally fine to use it to brush your teeth, wash your face and mouth, etc. Don't panic when you coincidentally swallow a little bit of the tap water in Uganda. You will be fine, no worries. Our advice is to buy bottled drinking water, that way you are also supporting local businesses. 

6. Best time to travel to Uganda?

You can travel to Uganda all year! The best time for Uganda safaris is during the dry season from June to August and from December to February. In dryer conditions wildlife is easier to spot.

The high season is from June to September, but it will never really get crowded. There is no real peak season for traveling to Uganda. The most challenging months to visit Uganda are March, April and May. Because of the wet season traveling around can get a little more complicated. Roads and nature trails can be in poor conditions.

The gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be done year round. Keep in mind that places like Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queens National Park, etc can get cold at night even in summer due to their high altitudes.

7. Famous Quote about Uganda from Winston Churchill

in 1908 Winston Churchill spoke the following famous quote about Uganda that still resonates in Uganda nowadays:

"For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life - bird, insect, reptile, beast - for vast scale, Uganda is truly the Pearl of Africa."

That is why you will see Welcome to the Pearl of Africa all around Uganda.

8. What is the currency in Uganda

The name of the local currency in Uganda is the Shilling. Uganda is still a cash country and card payments are not common. However most bigger hotels and lodges and even at the Uganda National Parks you can pay with either credit cards as well as USD, Euros and GBP these days. So when paying for example the $700 National Park fee for mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi  there is no need to bring stacks of Uganda cash.

Makes sure you always have Uganda Shillings (UGX) on you during your Uganda trip. Small bills like 1,000 UGX are the equivalent of just 25 dollar cents, but they are worth big smiles if you give them to locals as a tip. Try to buy local to support local people in Uganda.

9. Exchange money

You will get the best value for money when you exchange US dollar into Ugandan Shilling at a Forex office in one of the towns. You can also change money at the Entebbe Airport, but the rates are significantly lower. There are exchange offices all around the bigger towns and the Uganda tourist attractions.

Be aware of the US Dollar-UGX exchange rate. Some Ugandans are very ‘creative’ with converting their currency in for example US Dollars or Euros. As per January 2024 the official exchange rate is around: $1 USD = 3,800 UGX.

10. ATM's in Uganda

When updating this Uganda travel blog Traveltomtom added this item as he had problems withdrawing money from ATM's. Apparently his bank (Revolut) suspended all transactions with Uganda. This came as a total surprise and things got a little complicated. Luckily he had some cash on him and used another Visa credit card to withdraw money.

The Standard Chartered Bank charges the highest fees for withdrawing money: 20,000 UGX = $5.4 USD. Stanbic Bank and Absa Bank charge 11,500 UGX = $3 USD. The best ATM in Uganda for foreign bank cards is Bank of Baroda as they do NOT charge a fee for withdrawing money.

11. Buy a local sim card for Uganda

Stay connected in Uganda and buy a local sim card. Prepaid Uganda sim cards are cheap and you get about 5 GB for $5 USD. I advice travelers to get a Airtel Uganda sim card based on my own experiences. 12. Facebook is available again

Because of a dispute between the Uganda Government and Facebook back in 2021 Facebook and Instagram were blocked for a long time.  Luckily when visiting Uganda again in August 2021, things got partially solved as Instagram is accessible again. The Facebook block was luckily also lifted in 2023 and therefore as of 2024 you can use all social media apps without any problems.

By law it is officially forbidden to use a VPN in Uganda but it is of course very common. There is not direct need anymore since all social media apps are available again.

In those years WhatsApp was also blocked, but when you would pay an extra social media tax (OTT) the app would be accessible. Luckily, since July 2021 the social media tax is something from the past as well and the OTT is lifted by the government. You can use WhatsApp in Uganda without any problem.

13. How is the WiFi in Uganda

Let's not talk around the bush, the WiFi in Uganda is shit. Although most lodges offer free Wi-Fi in their main areas, it’s mostly not working or it is very slow. It is best to buy a Uganda prepaid sim card on arrival or buy a sim card at Entebbe Airport . Just don't rely on WiFi when traveling in Uganda.

14. What is the food like in Uganda

Local food is a mix of matoke (cooked bananas), cassave, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, tomatos, cabbage and a sauce made of grounded peanuts. The sauce is very similar to satay sauce from Indonesia. This is what a standard local meal looks like in Uganda and you should try it in a local restaurant. Locals love it if tourists come and try their local food. It shouldn't cost more than $2 normally.

When traveling in Uganda you will also quickly find out that there is a huge Indian influence and that is why you can find Indian food everywhere. Traveltomtom has visited India a lot and loves Indian food, but in Uganda they prepare very good Indian food too. He was pleasantly surprised. It is also very common to find chapati on the streets and in restaurants.

One more great thing to mention about Ugandan food is that there are fresh fruits everywhere. You can find it on the streets and it is CHEAP!

Are you staying in more upscale lodges, then often the meals are included. That means you will be served a 3 course meal every evening, which mostly is Western orientated dishes like pasta, steak, fish, etc.

15. What is a Ugandan Rolex?

A Rolex is not a watch, but it comes from a dish called rolled eggs. You can buy it almost everywhere along the street. I ate is several times as breakfast or lunch and found it to be very tasty. It is basically a chapati with egg. Cheap, fast and pretty good. A street food Rolex shouldn't cost more than 1,500 UGX ($0.35)

16. Do you tip in Uganda?

Tipping is normal in Uganda. Most guides expect a small tip after for example a bout tour, game drive or a nature walk. Because locals have limited access to exchange tips in a foreign currency, the best thing to do is tipping them in Ugandan Shilling.

The average monthly income in Uganda varies throughout the country and ranges between 500.000 UGX ($140 USD) and 1.000.000 UGX ($280 USD) . Tipping someone a couple dollars will give you a lot of smiles throughout your trip to Uganda. Ugandan people are super friendly, especially the ones in the tourism business and those who speak English. I am sure you gonna see a lot of big smiles leaving a couple dollars behind as a tip.

17. How much are the National Park fees in Uganda in 2024

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set fixed fees for visiting national parks in Uganda. Park entrance fees differ a little per National Park but most of the famous tourists spots in Uganda are around $40 for tourists. Some lesser known parks charge $35 and some small reserves only $10 for foreign non-residents (FNR). Be aware that National Park fees in Uganda are per 24 hours. That means you can be creative with the park fees when you schedule it right.

Click here to download the latest National Park Fees in Uganda  as a PDF directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority website. For vehicles you pay an additional national park fee. The national park fees for cars are a single payment so you don't pay per day. For the car you pay another 30,000 UGX.

Example: you visit Uganda with your partner and visit 4 of the most popular National Parks all for 2 days then expect to pay the following national park fees: 4 * 2 * 2 * $40 = $640 in national park fees.

On top of that you would have to pay for the vehicle: 4 * $8 = $32. In total you then pay $672 national park fees. It may sound a lot but traveling in Uganda is so worth it.

18. How much do excursions cost in Uganda

When traveling in Uganda you will find out that things to do in Uganda are NOT cheap. I was surprised that white water rafting in Jinja on the Nile River costs somewhere between $80 and $140 USD depending on your negotiation skills. It is a full day trip, but still... I just told you what the average income per month is in Uganda.

Excursion prices vary enormously, but to give you an idea here are some prices for activities that I found through the Uganda Wildlife Authority website .

19. Uganda tourism is expensive

In case you didn't know yet, traveling in Africa is expensive and Uganda is no exception. If you eat local, sleep local and travel local then you can travel Africa on a budget. But as soon as you want to see some of the best places to visit in Uganda, things get a lot more expensive.

In all honesty some travel experiences in Uganda are very expensive! Traveltomtom has traveled to more than 110 countries and especially on his overland trip in Africa he found Uganda to be one of the more expensive countries. For example a 3d/2n trip to Murchison Falls from Entebbe was $400 and that during the global pandemic. Bargaining about these trip prices is not easy either. It is the National Park fees, the tour operators, the local guides, the transportation, etc. that make these tours in Uganda so expensive.

20. Travel Uganda on a budget

Can you visit Uganda on a budget? Yes you can! Traveltomtom did a guided tour to the gorillas trekking in Bwindi National Park and safaris in Mburo National Park, but mainly traveled overland for most part of his Uganda trip. Local busses are cheap and the more local you go, the cheaper it becomes. Of course it also becomes less comfortable and it will take much more time

A 2-3 hour bus ride should not cost more than $5. There are busses in every direction. Big coaches are pretty comfortable but you could also negotiate to take the front seat in one of the smaller vans called Matatus and pay for 2 seats. Traveltomtom always bought the driver and his helper a drink or some snacks, it is a couple cents, but it makes your trip much more comfortable.

When visiting National Parks try to hitch a ride with some other tourists. You will still have to pay the national park fees, but it is a great way to save on guided safaris. Visiting the mountain gorillas there is no other way then paying for permit that includes a guided trekking.

However some places to visit in Uganda are free, like the equator sign! :)

21. Boda Boda's in Uganda

Traveltomtom named Uganda the Vietnam of Africa. If you have ever visited Vietnam then you know what he means. Motorbikes are the main mode of transportation for local people in Uganda, not for tourists.However, there are motorbikes everywhere and Traveltomtom made great use of that. Big parts of his overland trip in Uganda he also used boda boda's.

For example a Boda Boda from Entebbe to Kampala is about 50 minutes and should not cost more than 40,000 UGX, but you can easily negotiate it down to 30,000 UGX. Traveltomtom also traveled by Boda Boda from Kampala to Jinja for 80,000, which was a 2,5h trip. If you are up for an adventure then traveling by motorbike in Uganda is pretty wild!

22. There is Uber and Bolt in Uganda

Looking for a safe way to travel then surely recommend you to use one of the taxi apps. The most common one to Western tourists is of course Uber, but you can also use Bolt in Uganda. It is the exact same thing. Of course if you go off the beaten path in Uganda, don't expect to find an Uber or Blot, it is limited to the bigger cities only.

When looking for food delivery apps then download the Glovo app. There is no Uber Eats in Uganda, but Glovo works fine. However, it is very limited to Kampala mostly. Glovo can do grocery shopping for you or deliver you stuff from the pharmacy.

23. When and where to buy Chimpanzee and Gorilla trekking permits?

Secure your gorilla or chimp trekking permits prior to arrival to avoid disappointment! The permits are issued by UWA that markets them through Uganda Tour Operators to the public. Therefor it’s best to book your trekking permit (or a complete trekking tour) with a tour operator that is a member of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators. The mountain gorilla trekking permits cost $700 in 2024 for foreign non-residents.

You can obtain and pay the Gorilla trekking permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority website .

I advise you to apply for a permit 6 months prior to the date you want to trek. Permits from June-August and December and February tend to sell out quickly. Last minute bookings may be possible during low season. For more info read my complete gorilla trekking blog , which is also updated for 2024.

24. Electricity plugs in Uganda

Few areas outside the cities actually have electricity. Most of the lodges use solar energy or generators, which means there is only power at certain times of the day and electricity plugs are limited. Because of that, it isn’t always possible to charge all your devices in your room. In some places you will be able to charge your phone, but laptops or camera batteries have to be charged in the reception or main area.

Hairdryers use too much power so these are often not available. Of course the more expensive lodges have 24h facilities available, but be prepared to pay $300 per person per night for those. A helpful Uganda travel tip is to bring powerful powerbanks to charge your devices when needed and bring extra batteries for cameras, etc.

The electricity plugs in Uganda are similar to the ones in the UK. So make sure you bring a travel adapter with you when visiting Uganda. For more info on what to pack for a Uganda trip keep reaading.

25. Road conditions in Uganda

There are a lot of road works in Uganda and although many roads improved a lot over the last years, some roads are still in a very bad condition. Depending on the weather it sometimes can be challenging to travel around Uganda. If you choose to drive yourself (which is an option) I would suggest driving a 4WD. Keep in mind that you have to drive on the left side of the road.

Contact UWA Headquarters to obtain up-to-date advice about the road conditions and identify the preferred route when visiting Uganda. Especially if you consider an approach through Karamoja (like me). Some roads can be very bad after heavy rains. In that case it’s better to take an alternative route. There are a lot of investments in Ugnada tourism and (new) roads, so the up-to-date UWA information can come in very handy.

26. Self drive vs. hiring a driver

There are a lot of tourists on the road exploring the country on a self driving tour. All of the people Traveltomtom met on his recent trip to Uganda that were renting a car and self driving had a 4x4. A bunch of them were actually carrying camping gear and camped most of the time. According to them is was a great way to save some money, because renting a 4x4 is not gonna be cheap. Expect to spend about $80 per day, if you are hiring a driver, expect to pay around $150 per day.

A big tourist vehicle can hold up to 6 people though, so if you are with a group that would be best and then I definitely suggest renting a big 4x4 including a driver.

Hiring a car with driver in Uganda gives you time to enjoy the long road trips. The landscapes are amazing and there is so much to see along the road. Main roads are pretty ok, however if you go to specific tourist spots like National Parks, then road suddenly get shit. As soon as you turn off from the main roads, traveling in Uganda become much more difficult. Road conditions are bad and having a driver will save you a lot of stress and hassle. My recommendations is to rent a car with driver for a road trip in Uganda, however it is obviously much more expensive.

When self driving you will also have to deal with the many police checks yourself. In general they won't stop tourist vehicles, but some travelers reported they had to pay small bribes. Corruption is present in Uganda, but in general a tourists should be totally fine.

27. Gas stations in Uganda

Always make sure you have enough fuel for a long journey. In general there is no shortage of gas stations along the route, but plan your Uganda road trip itinerary carefully. For example if you decide to visit Kidepo National Park. It’s a long journey up north and you need enough fuel (including your game drive activities in the national park) since there is no gas station in or around Kidepo Valley National Park. The nearest gas stations are in Kaabong and Kitgum.

28. Languages in Uganda

Uganda counts more than 40 languages, every tribe speaks their own language. Uniform language especially in and around the famous tourist places in Uganda is luckily English. If you go off the beaten path you could run into places where English is not spoken very well, but in general you shouldn't have any problems communicating with local people.

In general all the Ugandans are very friendly people. It’s impolite to only say ‘Hi!’ So instead use ‘How are you?’. Even children will greet you with ‘How are you?’ They also love to touch your soft ‘Muzungu’ skin.

Here are some words in local Uganda language that you could use and local people would totally love it.

29. Things to do and places to visit in Uganda

We already spoke about the Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park , which obviously is the major tourist attraction in Uganda, but there is much more to see and do. The Chimpanzee trekking is another amazing thing to do in Uganda and a must see when you are a wildlife lover are the tree climbing lions. It is a very rare phenomenon but you can see them in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Apart from the stunning wildlife there are some epic waterfalls to visit. A tour to Murchison Falls is a very popular tourist destination and a little more off the beaten path are the Sipi Falls. Just about 80 kilometer East of Kampala you will find the laidback city of Jinja, where you can find the source of the Nile and where white water rafting is the number one thing to do.

A place to visit in Uganda that is popular with backpackers is Lake Bunyonyi. A stunning crater lake with numerous islands. Kayaking and taking in the stunning views while swinging in a hammock are great things to do here. Near Lake Bonyonyi there is Lake Mburo National Park and much more to the Northeast there is Mbale and Kidepo Valley National Park which are popular places to visit in Uganda.

Visiting Uganda is ADVENTURE!

30. Visit Kampala if you dare!

Are you ready for an adventure then definitely don't miss out on visiting Kampala. I totally understand it is not for everyone, but when you want to see some extraordinary city life I recommend you to check it out. Traveltomtom has traveled to more than 155 countries as of January 2024 and has been to only 1 place in the world that can rival Kampala in it terms of craziness: Dhaka, Bangladesh .

The traffic is crazy, the amount of people is insane, yes it is dirty, it is not beautiful, yet I still recommend it. Why? It is a fantastic experience with a dozen impressions on every street corner.

My travel tip for visiting Kampala is to hit up Steve from Free Walking Tours in Kampala and he will show you the best places to visit in Kampala. Also a must when in Kampala is visiting the Gaddafi Mosque, according to Traveltomtom one of the best things to do in Kampala , because you can climb to the top of the minaret and have the most amazing view over Kampala.

31. What to bring to Uganda

Remember to dress respectfully. Uganda is conservative, so in general it’s better to avoid short skirts or shorts when traveling to Uganda. For women it’s best to bring an over the knee skirt because it’s impolite to wear trousers or shorts while visiting local community. I did wear shorts during day activities like hikes, safaris or boat tours, no problem.

Pack good hiking shoes (Traveltomtom disagrees LOL) for your chimpanzee or gorilla trekkings. Some parts can be very muddy and slippery. It’s also good to pack gaiters, gloves, a rain jacket/poncho and a hat. Although it’s hot wear long trousers and thin long-sleeved shirts to protect your arms and legs from scratches. 

Long clothing will also help protect you from diseases carried by mosquitoes and other insects such as tsetse flies. In general you should bring a flashlight, daypack, insect repellent, malaria pills for some areas, waterproof bags and an international driving license if you’re thinking of driving yourself.

Since you will probably meet a lot of children on your way, consider bringing some pencils to give to them (in stead of candies or money).

32. Camera gear and equipment for Uganda

It depends on your interest, but avid photographers and wildlife enthusiasts I recommend to bring the following to Uganda:

• Descent camera: for example a DSLR with several lenses or a camera with enough optical zoom. What I packed in my photography bag was a Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 100-400mm lens , Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 lens and a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens .
• A solid tripod .
• Enough batteries and memory cards .
• Binoculars , but many driver guides also have binoculars in their car.

Uganda’s small size, its treasures in nature and wildlife, and the little to no tourist crowds make it a great choice for private safari journeys.

Combined within this single small destination is the best of everything an African safari holiday has to offer. Uganda is home to the continent’s tallest mountain range, the snow-capped Rwenzori mountains .

Yes, yes! But how can an interested traveler visit Uganda on a small budget? In this post, I attempt to help budget travelers get a close enough estimate of how much they can spend on a Ugandan trip.

How to travel Uganda on a budget; simple safari planning hacks

Because Uganda is at the threshold of its discovery as a tourism destination, now is the best time to travel to Uganda. Generally, the tourism industry is recovering from a travel lockdown because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Uganda is getting popular enough to push hotels and safari lodge s to the region’s excellent standards and offers relatively lower room prices than other destinations in the region. From shoestring to luxury, every traveler in their style will find where to stay in Uganda. But before you excitedly dive into planning your safari itinerary , here are a few ways on how you can travel in Uganda on a budget.

How to save money on transportation

Uganda presents a wide variety of transport means that include the indistinct but affordable public means and the trusted private but pricey means of transportation. Apart from commuter rail in some parts of Kampala and ferry service, public transport in Uganda essentially boils down to buses and other motorized road transport forms. And it’s basically the cheapest means to travel in Uganda on a budget. Let’s take a look at how you can save on road transport.

Boda Boda (Motorbike)

One of the most popular and cheapest ways of travel around Uganda is the motorcycle-taxi or boda-boda—so-called because it originated as a bicycle with large panniers, used for smuggling goods across borders by rural footpaths. Now fitted with pillions and powered with 50 to 200 cc engines, they are a convenient form of suburban transport and great for short side trips where public transport barely exists. 

Fares are negotiable and affordable — just about less than US$2 , which is about Ush1,000 to 10,000 per trip. And, two travelers can share the same bike with the rider and get away with it. You’ll be amazed when you see a family riding the same bike; it’s such a picture.

If you’re reliant on public road transport in Uganda, you’ll inevitably use a boda-boda at some stage. But before hopping aboard, you should be aware of a pretty poor urban safety record. Boda-boda riders are invariably lacking in formal training and road safety awareness, which is frequently suggested, much between the ears.

Subsequently, the unruly nature of Boda Boda transport in Uganda has recently attracted the tech eye. Ride-hailing services or ride-sharing apps are the new way of traveling around cities, and if you’re an ardent Uber user, you’ll continue to enjoy the services also in Kampala on Boda Bodas . This is a far great alternative to just hailing a bike on the street late in the evenings. Famous Boda Boda mobile applications you’ll find tolerable in Uganda include Taxify, SafeBoda, and UberBoda. The price is not different from street hailed bikes.

Minibus-taxis

Next to Boda Bodas, minibus taxis are the cheapest of transport around Uganda. In addition to buses in Uganda, most major road transport routes are covered by a regular stream of white minibusses, which have no set departure times but leave when they are full — every ten to 30 minutes on busier routes. They are significantly the fastest way to travel in Uganda on a budget.

Fares are generally slightly higher than for buses when traveling long distances but significantly lower if traveling within the same region, city, or town. For a dollar or less, a minibus taxi will take you 38km (23 mi), like Entebbe to Kampala. And it’s customary on most routes to pay shortly before arriving rather than on departure, so there is little risk of being overcharged provided that you look and see what other passengers are paying.

Minibusses are referred to as taxis in Uganda (though here we’ve called them minibus-taxis to preclude confusion with special hire taxis) and as matatus in Kenya, generally understood but not used by Ugandans . A law enforcing a maximum of three passengers per row is stringently enforced in most parts of Uganda, meaning that minibus travel is far more comfortable than in the majority of African countries where four bums per row are customary.

All minibus taxis by law now have to have a distinctive blue-and-white band around the middle with a taxi light sign on the top, and special hire cars have to have a black-and-white band.

Special hire taxis 

Special hire taxis are what a modern city dweller would be familiar with. (taxi or cab) Special hire is a term that means hiring a vehicle privately to take you somewhere. Urban taxis are also known locally as special hires and are usually painted yellow, or with a white and yellow band (Entebbe airport taxis) around the middle or with a taxi cab light on the top.

Taxicab fares are relatively more expensive than all the road transport means but far more secure to travel with if you organize a special hire vehicle, and bargain hard.

Alternatively, download one of those taxi-hailing apps that allow you to pay per distance traveled. They are much cheaper than special hires and are available in Kampala, Entebbe, and major towns. Uber and Taxify outshine the rest, download from Apple or Google stores.

Shared taxis

If you’re in a far-flung Ugandan town junction, shared taxis will be your cheapest means of transport. They are generally light saloon cars that carry four to six passengers. They drive into their own on routes that attract insufficient human traffic for minibusses. For instance, when traveling between Katunguru and Mweya in Queen Elizabeth National Park or between Kisoro and Buhoma in Bwindi Impenetrable NP. 

They tend to be crowded and slow compared to minibusses and on routes where no other public transport exists. Fares are quite affordable ($1 – $5 on shorter routes), considering it may be the only option you can get from where you are. Often highly inflated, though. The drivers habitually overcharge tourists, so establish the price in advance, so bargain hard.

Buses 

Coach and bus services cover all major routes and, all things being relative, they are probably the safest form of public road transport in Uganda. On all highway routes, large modern coaches typically maintain a speed of 100km/h or faster, allowing them to travel between the capital and any of the main urban cities in western Uganda in less than five hours for less than US$10.

Gaa Gaa Buses (West Nile) and Elgon Flyer, Mash, YY Coaches, and Easy Coaches (Mbale and the east to Kenya) are the picks of the bunch. The best of the rest are Horizon & Swift Safaris (southwest Uganda), Kalita (Fort Portal), and Post Bus (Gulu). 

Link operates seemingly well-maintained buses capable of terrifying speeds. The Post Office’s Post Bus service is considered the best Bus Service in the country because it’s twice a day set departures, arriving at set times, and runs a perfectly well-maintained fleet.

The better services mostly have reasonably fixed departure times, with one or another coach leaving in either direction between Kampala and the likes of Mbale, Mbarara, Kabale, Kasese, Fort Portal, and Masindi every hour or so from around 07.00 to mid-afternoon.

Other transport means

Other means are not necessarily budget options, like private car hire. If you’re going to hire a car in hopes of saving on transport, then you are reading the wrong blog. Gasoline alone is quite expensive in Uganda, and the car hire companies charge exorbitant prices per day. You’re looking at paying US$40 -$150 per day depending on the type of car, plus you have to refill the gas tank yourself and pay for national park car entry fees on top of yours.

How to save money on accommodation on a Uganda trip

Traveling on a budget in Uganda has never been simpler. Uganda has grown enormously in recent years, and wherever you travel, and whatever your budget, you’ll seldom have a problem finding suitable travel accommodation. Most towns have a good variety of moderately priced and budget hotels, and even the smallest villages will usually have somewhere you can stay for a couple of dollars. Travelers in Uganda have not always enjoyed such a wide choice.

Before going into further detail about the different accommodation categories, it’s worth noting a few potentially misleading quirks in local hotel-speak. In Swahili, the word ‘hoteli’ refers to a restaurant, while what we call a hotel is generally called a lodging, guesthouse, or gesti. So if you ask a Ugandan to show you to a hotel, you might well be taken to an eatery.

Another local quirk is that most east African hotels in all price ranges refer to a room that has en-suite shower and toilet facilities as self-contained, a term that I may use later in this post. Several hotels offer accommodation in bandas, a term used widely in Africa to designate rooms or cottages detached from any other building. 

Be aware, too, that Ugandan usage of the terms single, double, and twin is somewhat inconsistent compared to Western conventions. Rather than automatically asking for a double room, couples might also check the bed’s size in a single room. Several hotels now provide oversize beds in which two people may sleep at a single tariff. Where such places offer bed and breakfast, usually only one guest will be provided with breakfast. Some double rooms offer similar scope for triple occupancy, being furnished with a double and single bed. 

How to avoid expensive accommodation

Accommodation in Uganda is categorized in upmarket, moderate, budget, shoestring, and camping considered the lowest. The upmarket or luxury category embraces all hotels, lodges, and resorts that cater primarily to the international leisure or business traveler and would probably be accorded a three-star to four-star ranking internationally. Most hotels in this category offer smart, modern accommodation with en-suite facilities, mosquito netting, air conditioning or fans (depending on the local climate), and in cities digital satellite television (DSTV) in all rooms. A luxury room price bracket exceeds US$300, in a couple of instances topping US$1,000.

But if you’re to travel in Uganda on budget, this flimsy info is enough to help you avoid the luxury accommodation category.

With a slimmer wallet, your next option is the moderate category. Essentially, it embraces those accommodation facilities which, for one or other reason, could not truly be classified as a luxury but are also too expensive or of a sufficiently high standard that they cannot be considered budget lodgings. They are decent lodges or hotels in recognized tourist areas that charge considerably lower rates than their upmarket competitors but are clearly a notch or two above the budget category. Hotels in this range normally offer comfortable accommodation in self-contained rooms with hot water, a cooling fan, and possibly DSTV, and they will have a decent restaurant and employ a high ratio of English-speaking staff.

Most moderate hotels charge around US$100-$300 for a double room inclusive of breakfast, but some are slightly more expensive or cheaper. 

Budget Accommodation For Travelers in Uganda

If you’re still interested in saving on lodging and travel in Uganda on a budget, we still need to get you where to stay. The hotels in this category are generally aimed largely at the local market, and they definitely don’t approach international standards. Still, they will usually be reasonably clean and comfortable and a definite cut above the basic guesthouses that proliferate in most towns. 

Hotels and safari lodges in this bracket will more often than not have a decent restaurant attached, English-speaking staff, comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities, running cold, or possibly hot water, a cooling fan (but no air conditioning), and good mosquito netting. 

Budget room rates are typically around US$30-100 for a double , including breakfast, which may or may not be very substantial. This is the category to look at if you are on a limited budget.

Shoestring accommodation

This category is dominated by the small local guesthouses that proliferate in most towns, catering almost exclusively to locals. A few cater exclusively to backpackers like Red Chillin in Kampala and Backpackers in Entebbe. 

Exclusive local ones typically consist of around ten cell-like rooms forming three walls around a central courtyard, with a reception area or restaurant at the front. Guesthouse standards vary widely both within towns and between them, far more so than do their prices. 

Note that while backpacker hostels exist, their range of accommodation offered now extends far beyond cheap dorm beds, which are often more accurately classified in the budget category. This category may be a much larger selection of basic guesthouses clustered together in the vicinity of the bus station or market, and often there is little to choose between them. 

If you’re looking around, my experience is that guest houses run by women or with a strong female presence are generally cleaner and more hospitable than those run by men. That — standards of maintenance being low — the newest guesthouse will be the cleanest and the brightest. 

Shoestring accommodation typically costs around US$10-50 for a double , with some establishments costing a little more. In most cases, shared bathrooms and toilets are provided rather than en-suite (or self-contained) facilities, and breakfast will not be included in the room rate or will be very insubstantial if it is. 

Accommodation charges for units operated by the UWA vary widely from US$5 to US$ 15 per person depending on the standard of accommodation and whether they are sharing.

This category is the one to look at for travelers who want the cheapest possible accommodation on a trip to Uganda irrespective of quality. However, it does often include perfectly pleasant hotels that happen to be cheap. 

There has been a great increase in the number of organized campsites in recent years, and there are now very few established tourist centers where you can’t pitch a tent in a guarded site with good facilities. 

Camping typically costs around US$5 per person per night and US$10 in the national parks. UWA’s tents go for US$20-$30.

How to Save Money on Food and Drinks

If you are not too fussy and don’t mind a lack of variety, you can eat cheaply almost anywhere in Uganda. In most towns, numerous local restaurants (often called hoteli) serve unimaginative but filling meals for under US$2. 

Typically, local food is based around meat or chicken stew eaten with one of four staples: rice, chapati, matooke, and ugali (posho)—starchy cornbread eaten throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Matoke is a cooked green banana dish, served boiled or mushy heap, and the staple diet in many parts of Uganda. 

Another Ugandan special is groundnut sauce. Mandazi, the local equivalent of doughnuts, are tasty when they are freshly cooked but rather less appetising when they are a day old. Mandazi is served at hotelis and sold at markets. 

You can often eat very cheaply at stalls around markets and bus stations. Cheap it may be, but for most travelers, the appeal of this sort of fare soon palls. A common offering on the street is the Rolex meal. This is nothing more (or less) than a freshly cooked chapati enhanced by a fresh omelet, chopped onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and finely sliced cabbage. The latter items are rolled up inside the former, hence the name, and popped into a polythene bag.

You’ll find Rolex street vendors armed with metal hot plates, a charcoal stove, and a chopping board in all popular nightspots of ‘local’ flavor. It’s exactly the sort of street food your mother warned you against eating in Africa, so Rolexes are obviously a firm favorite with backpackers, gap-year students, volunteers (and this writer). Expect to pay around 60 cents to a dollar.

You’ll usually find a couple of better restaurants (sometimes attached to upmarket or moderate hotels) serving Western or Indian food for around US$5-10. There is considerably more variety in Kampala and Entebbe, where for US$10 per head, you can eat very well indeed. Good lodges in parks generally serve high-quality food. 

Vegetarians are often poorly catered for in Uganda safari lodges (the exception being up-market or Indian restaurants). People on guided tours should ensure that the safari operator is informed in advance about this or any other dietary preference. 

Note that Swahili names for various foods are widely used in Uganda, so it may come in handy catching up on those Swahili or Luganda words . 

Cooking for yourself

The alternative to eating at restaurants is to put together your own meals with ingredients purchased at markets and supermarkets. The variety of foodstuffs you can buy varies from season to season and from town to town, but in most major centers, you can rely on finding a supermarket that stocks frozen meat, a few tinned goods, biscuits, pasta, rice, and chocolate bars. 

Fruit and vegetables are best bought at markets, where they are very cheap. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, bananas, sugarcane, avocados, paw-paws, mangoes, coconuts, oranges, and pineapples are available in most towns. 

If you have specialized requirements, you’re best off doing your shopping in Kampala, where a wider selection of goods is available in big international supermarkets like Shoprite and Game. Big chains like Quality supermarkets provide great international choices too.

Brand-name soft drinks such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Fanta are widely available in Uganda and cheap by international standards. If the fizzy stuff doesn’t appeal, you can buy local quality packed juices like Splash or imported South African fruit juices at supermarkets in Kampala and other large towns. 

Tap water is reasonably safe to drink in larger towns, but bottled mineral water is widely available if you prefer not to take the risk. 

Hot Beverages

Locally, the most widely drunk hot beverage is chai, a flavored sweet tea where all ingredients are boiled together in a pot. In some parts of the country, chai is often flavored with spices such as ginger and or cinnamon leaves. Another common hot beverage is African tea, that’s whole milk boiled with tea and flavored with ginger. For 60 cents or less, you get a decent cup of tea with cream.

Coffee is one of Uganda’s major cash crops. Still, you’ll be lucky if you ever find a Ugandan at a budget lodging who knows how to brew a decent cup — it will almost invariably taste insipid and watery except at upmarket hotels and quality restaurants.  Buy a pack of coffee for US$3, and make yourself a cup whenever you need a coffee fix.

The main alcoholic drink is a Lager beer brewed by two main players Nile Breweries and the pioneer Uganda Breweries. All local beers come in 500ml bottles, which cost US$1 in local bars and up to US$3 in some upmarket hotels. Nile Special is probably the most popular beer among travelers, though some prefer the milder Bell. If you’re serious about getting drunk, try Eagle Extra, which has an alcohol level of 6.5%. 

Two of Africa’s most pleasant lagers, Kenya Tusker and Congo Primus, sometimes used to be sold in towns near the respective borders but are now readily available across the country. If you’ve never been to Africa before, you might want to try the local millet beer (Marwa). It’s not bad, though for most people, once is enough. 

A selection of superior plonk-quality South African wines is available in most tourist-class hotels and bars, as well as in many supermarkets, generally at around US$10-20 per bottle — outrageous to South Africans who know that the same wine would cost 20% of that in a supermarket at home, but not unreasonable in international terms. Based on my experience, all wines — white or red — of more than two or three years’ vintage are best avoided in preference for younger bottles, presumably because they are poorly stored. 

Bond 7 Whisky and a local gin called Uganda Waragi can be bought very cheaply in various bottle sizes or 60ml sachets —very convenient for hiking in remote areas or taking with you to upmarket hotels for an inexpensive nightcap in your room.

These are known by the rather endearing term ‘tot pack,’ though the African fondness for tacking an additional vowel to the end of a noun has actually resulted in ‘totter pack’; you may appreciate this inadvertent irony if you overindulge.  

Choosing the right safari activities that fall under your budget

Planning your travel in Uganda on a budget is going so well until you choose adventures and things to do on your Uganda tour. Your budget will depend on what you select from the list of safari activities Uganda offers. Most considered is one of the two primate adventures in the rainforest jungles: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls national parks.

Gorilla Trekking ($700/$400)

Seeing the mountain’s gentle giant gorillas is unmissable, but the price tag on a permit is hefty. For US$700 per person for a gorilla permit, you’ll be escorted into the jungle with two armed rangers, a tracker guide, and seven other trekkers to where a gorilla family was last seen. With your facemask on, gloves, and 10 meters distance, you’ll only be allowed 60 minutes in their presence unless you chose the more lengthy habituation experience that allows you 4 hours for a hefty US$1,500.

Even if you can’t afford gorilla trekking, Bwindi is a rewarding park to visit just for a chance to explore the lush virgin rainforest. Several 3 to 4-hour hikes run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) penetrate the Impenetrable Forest around Buhoma. The walks begin at 09:00 and 12:15 and cost US$30 per person (not including your park entry fee of $40). 

Chimpanzee Trekking ($50 and $200)

Chimpanzee trekking in Kanyanchu, Kibale forest, is the best alternative to gorilla trekking, cheaper and easier to access than Bwindi. A Kibale chimp permit costs US$200 though you can trek the greater apes in other parts of Uganda at a lower price.

In the eastern part of Queen Elizabeth NP, Kyambura (Chambura) Gorge is a beautiful green scar running through the savanna, a little Eden brimming with chimpanzees and other primates. A chimp permit here costs US$50, but in Semuliki NP, the permit costs US$30.

Other typical safari adventures

The primates may not be your choice of adventure. However, there are many options that you can spread out through your safari trip to Uganda .

In the east is the adrenaline capital, Jinja, the famed source of the Nile river. There’s a menu of adventure sports offered along the Nile corridor north of the town. Activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping, and quad biking attract a young and young heart traveler’s steady flow. You might spend US$120 to $220 for a guided whitewater rafting excursion.

If hyping adrenaline is not a choice for you, take other low-cost activities in the savannah parks or a self-guided walk in the mountainous areas, relax by the crater lake in western Uganda, take a birding expedition or travel with a purpose and sign up volunteers. On such days you could spend US$35 or less. Let’s glimpse through what you may incur on entrance fees:

We’ve basically explored the common areas for cutting the cost of travel in Uganda, but there’s more;

Go off the beaten path

Get off the beaten path and explore places most tourist vehicles won’t go and discover raw, untouched wild places. Sipi falls near Mount Elgon is a site to check out. Rarely visited waterfalls, almost-deserted islands, and dense forests and coffee and tea plantations adorn Uganda’s nature and are a perfect choice for travel in Uganda on a budget. 

The volcanic lakes dotted around western Uganda’s mountainous region (especially in Fort Portal & Kasese) offer stunning views. Lake Bunyonyi en route to Bwindi will surely keep you immersed in nature’s own ambiance. Tourists have referred to the Bunyonyi region as the Switzerland of Africa, and it’s a top birding place in Uganda.

Kilembe town in Kasese, perched at the edge of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, the village is a popular set-off point for dedicated hikers who spend up to a week in the National Park enjoying the marvels of its wildlife. Ptolemy and other antiquity historians referred to this mountain range as The Mountains of the Moon and the glacial source of the Nile. However, those of you who do not wish to venture into the Heart of Darkness, or do not have a few hundreds of dollars to spare, can spend a few days in the village and invest their money into community tourism. You can pay less than $20 for a community guide.

Travel during the wet season

The off-peak (or low season) is the best time to travel to Uganda on a budget. It’s low season in Uganda during the Wet season. Hotels, Camps, and lodges are charging lower rates because there’s less travel traffic. If you don’t mind a downpour once a day and are looking to travel on a budget, this is the best time for a Uganda trip. The off-peak covers months between March to May and September to November.

This is the period when the country is at its most beautiful, the savannah plains, and the whole country is covered in green, and photography is at its best, especially when the sun shines over the afternoons.

Although wildlife in the savannah reserves is harder to spot in the Wet season due to high vegetation and animals spread all over the plain, you’ll still see plenty of newborns and witness concomitant gut-wrenching thrills when hungry predators battle with vigilant mothers or snatch the helpless young.

15 Best Places to Visit in Uganda: 2024 Uganda Travel Tips

Thinking of going on safari in Uganda and looking for some Uganda travel tips to make the most out of your trip to the Pearl of Africa ? I made a list of the 15 best places to visit in Uganda that should be part of your itinerary. As a photographer and travel marketer, I spend more than 3 months in Uganda and I also host Uganda Group Trips. Therefore, I'm able to give you the best possible advice.

The green Uganda offers a serene beauty with wonderful natural tourist destinations and is popular for its breathtaking landscapes, biodiversity, and abundant birdlife and wildlife including the endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Find the 15 most beautiful places to visit in Uganda , full of interesting travel tips, that deserve a spot on your Uganda itinerary:

1. Jinja and Lake Victoria: The Source of The Nile

Jinja is a popular tourist destination, famous because of the historic source of the (White) Nile. It is the starting point of the world’s longest river that flows from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea through central and northern Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt.

After Entebbe, Jinja is a great starting point for your Uganda trip, especially if you are in for adrenaline-based activities. Bungee jumping, rafting, kayaking, and other water activities are some of the many active tourist attractions in Jinja.

If you prefer a more relaxing way to experience Jinja, you may want to book a (private) boat tour on Lake Victoria to see the Speke monument at the 'source of the Nile'. A boat tour to the source of the Nile   is one of the highlights in Uganda and a great way to spot birds that live near the river, like kingfishers, fish eagles, storks, and ibises. When you reach the actual source of the Nile River , you can jump off the boat and walk over a wooden deck towards the source of the Nile sign to make a quick photo. Do know this is a small touristic spot with overrated boat trip prices that is not everyone's cup of tea. However, it's the only way to visit the ' source of the Nile '.

2. Sipi Falls: a Hiker's Paradise

Sipi Falls is a hiker's paradise! It’s a series of three impressive waterfalls located in a spectacular, unharmed, and green landscape near the border of Kenya . It’s one of the most beautiful places in Uganda and a perfect place to unwind. The hike to all three falls takes 7-8 km. The waterfalls are only accessible by foot.

A local guide will accompany you on the walk and tells you about the historical and geographical background of the area and share some interesting facts like the medical purposes of the surrounding plants. Taking part in guided hiking activities like these is a perfect way to support the local Ugandan community and a spectacular way to enjoy and learn about the beautiful green surroundings of Sipi.

Sipi Falls is also known for its many local coffee plantations . Coffee is Uganda's leading export crop, but because of financial difficulties, it’s hard for small local farmers to keep their heads above water. Visiting a rural coffee plantation in Uganda is a great way to support the farmers. They are extremely hospitable and are happy to show you the whole coffee process; from picking to shelling, grinding, and roasting. Obviously, you finish by consuming a delicious strong Ugandan  coffee  (Arabica), straight from the source.

3. Kidepo National Park: The Serengeti of Uganda

When it comes to game viewing, Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the best places to visit in Uganda. It’s the most isolated park and unknown to many tourists, but it offers an abundance of wildlife and spectacular Savannah landscapes.

Kidepo National Park is located in Northern Uganda, at the border with Southern Sudan. It takes some effort to reach the park, but the variety of wildlife and beautiful views are worth it.

My Uganda Travel Tip for you: when you are in for an adventurous safari, add off-the-beaten-path Kidepo National Park to your Uganda safari itinerary; a true gem and one of the most beautiful places in Uganda known as Uganda's own Serengeti . Make sure you have enough fuel to get to Kidepo (and for your planned game drives ) as there's no gas station in Kidepo. Kaabong and Kitgum are the nearest places to stock up on fuel.

4. Murchison Falls National Park

Being Uganda’s oldest and largest wildlife reserve, Murchison Falls National Park is one of the most visited places in Uganda . It’s home to four of the Big five game animals, rhinos excluded. Even if you have limited time, your chances of spotting animals are high. We saw lots of animals including a leopard, lions , elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocs, many birds, and antelopes.

One of the best things to do in Uganda is to visit the actual Murchison waterfall. I would highly recommend booking a half-day tour to explore the falls, including a boat trip to the bottom of the falls.

On the Murchison Falls boat trip , it used to be possible to get off the boat and hike to the top of the falls where the water of the river Nile clashes with the borders of a narrow rocky gap and drops down 34 meters.

Because of the flooding, it's no longer possible as part of the boat trip but you can still do the ' Top of the Falls Hike ' from a different starting point. If you are not able or don’t want to hike to the top, an alternative to see the actual Murchison Falls is to get there by car. As the most visited National Park in Uganda , it's definitely worth it to add this amazing place to your Uganda trip itinerary.

5. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

We all know that rhinos are critically endangered because of poaching. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary located near Murchison Falls National Park is the only place in Uganda to see rhinos roaming around in the wild. It’s a rhino re-introduction project for white rhinos. You can trek them on foot, accompanied by a ranger . The rhino trekking will last about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and costs about $45 per person.

The rhinos are heavily protected but can roam free in an area that covers 7000 hectares of land. The walk is not heavy, but it’s an open space, so it can be very hot in the sun.

While visiting the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, you have the opportunity to do more activities like a Shoebill trek, night walk, or canoe ride. You can also stay overnight in a lodge or tent. When staying overnight, you’ll have the highest chance of seeing the prehistoric Shoebill .

6. Kibale National Park: The Primate Capital of Africa

Kibale Forest National Park is known as Uganda's primate capital of the world and the best place to visit in Uganda to see the chimpanzee. Booking a chimpanzee trekking   is the only way to see the chimps in Kibale. You will hike through the lush tropical rainforest looking for the chimpanzees and you’re allowed to stay with them for one hour at the moment you've found them.

If you want to spend more time with chimpanzees and learn even more about their daily routine, it’s recommended to book the chimpanzee habituation experience . It’s a bit more expensive than a chimp trekking, but you will spend a whole day with the chimpanzees to watch their daily activities like de-nesting, foraging for food, grooming, playing, and making nests for the night.

It’s an exhausting day full of movement, but an experience of a lifetime. To me, one of the highlights of my Uganda trip.

While trekking in Kibale Forest you can also find monkey species, like the Ugandan Red Colobus and the rare L'Hoest .

7. Kasendra Crater Lakes Region

The area around Kibale offers some of the most beautiful places to visit in Uganda, like the stunning crater lakes in the Kabarole district , tea plantations, and the Rwenzori Mountains . Especially, hikers should explore more of the region. There’s a recommended three-hour hike that includes three crater lakes, local villages, tea plantations, and a great view from ‘ the top of the world ’ overlooking all 3 crater lakes and the Rwenzori Mountains. Definitely one of the coolest places to visit in Uganda.

8. Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary: a Birdwatcher's Paradise

Near Kibale National Park, you can find the small Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary which is home to many other primate species and 200 different bird species (like the great blue turaco).  It’s a birdwatchers' paradise. This place is run by the Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental Development (KAFRED) and protects the Magombe swamp . All the profits are used to fund community projects around Bigodi, like supporting local schools.

I really enjoyed the swamp walking tour and visiting the local community, where we learned about traditional weaving techniques by the Bigodi Women Group .

9. Queen Elizabeth National Park: Spot Tree-Climbing Lions

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular national park, located in western Uganda, and named after the royal Queen Elizabeth II of England. This park is home to numerous mammal species and birds and offers stunning diverse landscapes and views of the beautiful Rwenzori Mountains in the back.

Besides the typical African Savannah, you will also find volcanic cones, beautiful salt crater lakes, and volcanic cones. From October to April, you might even be lucky to see flamingos at Lake Munyanyange . Large herds of buffaloes are also often found around the salt crater lakes in Queen Elizabeth NP.

To get the best out of your visit to Queen Elizabeth NP, you need to take time for several safari game drives.

Boat Tour Kazinga Channel

One of the most popular Uganda activities amongst tourists in Queen Elizabeth National Park is a peaceful boat trip to Kazinga Channel . This activity takes about 3 hours and offers great opportunities for wildlife viewing. This channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and is home to large concentrations of water buffaloes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and exotic birds. Sometimes you can even see elephants near or in the water. For the best views of the animals in the Kazinga Channel, you have to make sure to get a seat on the left side of the boat.

Tree-climbing Lions in the Ishasha Sector

Have you ever heard about the famous tree-climbing lions ? The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can see tree-climbing lions. This area is located in the Southern part of Queen Elizabeth NP, but it’s a must-visit place in Uganda . If you are heading to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to visit the mountain gorillas, I would highly recommend staying in Ishasha for one night; definitely one of the coolest places to visit in Uganda.

During the hottest parts of the day, you have the highest chance to spot tree-climbing lions. It is supposed that lions climb these huge fig trees as a way of protecting themselves against the numerous biting tsetse flies on ground level and to view their potential prey grazing on the open plains. I was lucky enough to capture tree-climbing lions. It was one of my favorite sightings at Queen Elizabeth National Park. 

10. Equator Sign Kayabwe: a Fun Photo Stop

Uganda is one of the countries that is crossed by the equator that cuts mother earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The most iconic equator crossing spot is in Kayabwe , located about 70 kilometers from Kampala and a fun place to visit in Uganda.

This widely-known landmark is often visited by tourists on the way to the national parks in Southwestern Uganda like Lake Mburo, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth NP, and Mgahinga. Not the most beautiful place to visit in Uganda, but the  equator landmark is a fun photo stop to capture yourself standing with one leg in the Northern Hemisphere and the other leg in the Southern Hemisphere.

11. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Home of The Uganda Gorillas

Visiting the critically endangered mountain gorillas should be on every traveler's bucket list when traveling to Uganda. Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done in two national parks of which Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is Uganda’s main gorilla trekking destination .

It’s declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its ecological uniqueness and is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park is an expensive activity, but an experience of a lifetime, and definitely one of the coolest and best things to do in Uganda . You need to be in good health for the Gorilla hike because you will be walking uphill and downhill through dense tropical rainforest. At times, the hike can be exhausting, but it's definitely worth the money and effort. To me, my favorite Uganda experience.

Visit the Batwa Tribe

While you’re at Bwindi, I would highly recommend visiting the Batwa Tribe . Learning more about the Batwa is one of the cultural things to do in Uganda . These original inhabitants of the jungle of Bwindi are known as the ‘keepers of the forest’. They lived in harmony with Uganda's rainforest for years and survived by hunting small game using bows and arrows.

Sadly, they lost their traditional way of living. Nowadays, these impressive people share their stories, history, and cultural habits like traditional songs and dances with tourists. Seeing the Batwa Tribe is a great way of learning about their way of life and the history of Uganda.

12. Lake Bunyonyi; Africa's Switzerland

As you might know, Uganda offers a great diversity of landscapes. One of the most tranquil and beautiful places in Uganda is Lake Bunyonyi . This lake is located near the border of Rwanda in the South West of Uganda, a 2 to 3-hour drive from Bwindi. Lake Bunyonyi is believed to be the second-deepest lake in Africa (44 m-90 m).

The lake is known as the ‘ Switzerland of Africa ’ because of the surrounding green terraces, hills, and valleys. The lake contains at least 29 islands and is 25 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide.

One of the most well-known islands with a notorious history is Akampene island, known as ‘ Punishment Island '. Unmarried pregnant girls were sent there to starve to death in the past. During our stay, we met the only living survivor, Ms. Mauda Kyitaragabirwe, who shared her story with us. She was only twelve years old when she was abandoned by her family.

Visiting several islands by boat is highly recommended. There are no hippos or crocodiles, and it’s bilharzia free, so it’s safe to swim in the lake. Besides relaxing or swimming, you can also choose to go canoeing in a dugout canoe or hiking through the hills and villages. For the best view of Lake Bunyonyi , you should go to Arcadia Lodge for a drink on their huge terrace.

13. Lake Mburo National Park: Best Uganda Sunset Views

Out of the 10 National Parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo is the smallest and the closest to the main towns of Kampala and Entebbe. This park offers endless views of wide-open Savannah landscapes with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores. It’s home to 350 bird species as well as more than 68 mammal species including buffalo, leopard, hyena, and jackal.

It’s also the only place in southern Uganda to see many Burchell zebras and the only park in the country with impalas. There are no lions and elephants in the park, but because of that, Lake Mburo is the best place for walking safaris and horse safaris in Uganda .

Visiting Lake Mburo is the perfect place to break up a long journey from the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Lake Bunyonyi to Kampala or Entebbe. In my opinion, this Ugandan National Park park is a bit underrated. I really loved the iconic sunset views over Lake Mburo .

14. Kampala: Uganda's City of 7 Hills

Kampala is the heart and soul of Uganda and must-visit when you travel to Uganda . Kampala is surrounded by many rolling hills ad borders Lake Victoria, which is known as the largest freshwater lake in Africa. The capital city of Uganda offers a variety of things to do and places to see, including the Uganda National Mosque that offers a panoramic view over the city after climbing 300 steps to the top of the minaret.

Other interesting tourist attractions in Kampala are the UNESCO Kasubi Tombs and Idi Amin's Torture Chambers on the grounds of Kabaka's Palace. Also don't miss out on the vibrant Owino Market and the Nakasero Food Market to taste the flavors of the Ugandan cuisine, including the famous 'Rolex'. Home to over 300 different bird species, the Mabamba Wetland offers a captivating ecosystem that draws bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and wildlife photographers from around the globe to go on a Uganda safari to see the Shoebill Stork .

When is the best time to go on safari in Uganda?

“Uganda can be visited at any time. Mountain gorilla trekking is on most tourists’ itineraries and permits are available throughout the year. Uganda is a tropical country with lots of rainfall. The wettest months are March to May and these months can be problematic to travel in. During these Wet season months , some roads become very muddy and hard to negotiate. The Dry season months of June to August and December to February offer the easiest travel conditions and these months are also recommended for Ugandan gorilla trekking. General wildlife viewing in the savannah reserves is also best during the Dry season months as animals gather around rivers and waterholes, and the grass is shorter, which makes spotting them easier.”

Why visit Uganda, what are the major attractions?

“Uganda is mostly known for its mountain gorilla tourism and most people visiting Uganda will include a gorilla trekking experience in their itinerary. It is possible to go on a Uganda gorilla tour as an add-on to an East African safari in Kenya or Tanzania, but Uganda has lots more to offer, so consider visiting some of the savannah reserves and tracking chimpanzees as well. Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a variety of activities such as chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge (or nearby Kalinzu Forest) and a boat trip on Kazinga Channel. The wildlife is diverse and one of the highlights is the tree-climbing lions on the Ishasha Plains. Murchison Falls National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing as well as spectacular scenic beauty. You can take a boat trip on the Nile River to the famous Murchison Falls or to the delta. The latter is particularly rewarding for birders, and sightings of the prehistoric-looking shoebill are very common in this area. More remote is Kidepo Valley National Park. This park offers a true wilderness experience and is home to many species that don’t occur elsewhere in the country, including the graceful cheetah. Primate-lovers should visit Kibale National Park as it offers the most reliable chimpanzee trekking in the country, and also has the greatest variety of monkeys of any forest in Uganda.”

What does gorilla trekking in Uganda cost?

“The permit fee for mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda is currently US$800 for visitors from outside of Africa. Although this might seem expensive, it is a bargain compared to the US$1,500 permit fee in Rwanda, which is currently the only other country where these gentle giants can be tracked. Note, however, that permits for residents of Uganda and citizens of other African countries are quite a bit cheaper than this. Gorilla trekking is offered in two places in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park . Both offer a similar experience where you can spend one hour with a gorilla troop after you have reached their location. The group size is limited to eight people. An activity offered in Bwindi only is the gorilla habituation experience. This involves visiting a gorilla group that is still in the process of getting used to tourist visits. How to Choose a Uganda Gorilla Trek

The Impenetrable National Forest. Does that sound interesting?

It probably brings up visions of green mountains and low lying mists, the sounds of mysterious animals off in the distance. If you’re lucky, it might mean the sight of some of the rarest gorilla groups in the world.

That’s right. Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest is one of the locations of Uganda’s famed Gorilla Treks. If a Uganda gorilla tour isn’t on your bucket list yet, it should be. Here’s why…

Uganda has had its share of problems in the past, but the country is currently on the road to recovery. It’s more stable, there are fewer threats of violence, and a resurgence in tourism has greatly contributed to the country’s infrastructure.

One of the biggest draws to Uganda is the remote area home to the country’s rare gorilla families . While gorilla safaris in Uganda aren’t the cheapest or easiest trips to take, they’re well worth the time and expense.

There are other locations to view rarely seen gorilla families in their natural habitat, and we will discuss in a section below the pros and cons of each to help you make your best decision. For now, let’s take a look at what Uganda has to offer.

3 Ugandan Gorilla Trek Tour Companies

Here are three of the most popular gorilla trek companies covering Uganda:

• Insight Safari Holidays : This company covers both Uganda and Rwanda and have been in the tour business since 2000. They take a 3 day gorilla safari into the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
• Wild Whispers Africa : They offer 14 tours around Uganda, including 8 specific gorilla treks.
• Kori Safari : This company is based out of Kampala, Uganda and offers 11 different gorilla safaris – the most of these companies.

What To Expect on a Ugandan Gorilla Tour

Gorilla treks are not guaranteed to spot any gorillas although tour companies are staffed with experts who know how to give you the best chance to see them.

When the day arrives, it usually starts at a designated meeting point. Some treks begin directly from here while others meet up at a spot further away. You don’t always know which your tour will be.

Tour groups receive some short training, usually in the form of a video and a briefing from the Ugandan Wildlife Authority, about what to do and what to expect during the trek. If the group is too large to trek safely, it is divided into more manageable groups of eight people or fewer .

The Ugandan gorillas are known by families that live in different parts of the park. The trek usually tracks one of these known families through their usual territories through the mountains. The group contains a guide who helps locate the families and usually an armed guard or two for safety.

It can take anywhere from one to five hours to locate the gorillas and sometimes longer. The groups are mobile because gorillas are vegetarian and must travel vast distances to keep up with nutrition demands.

The guides must track their movements through their usual territories. This can take quite a bit of time considering that the guide is also leading a group of people through the forest.

Once you find the gorilla family, you spend about an hour watching from a safe distance. Any longer has the potential to cause agitation and danger. Tours are not allowed to eat anywhere near the gorillas, nor are groups permitted to feed the gorillas. There is no flash photography allowed.

If you follow the rules in place, you should have about an hour to watch the group interact with each other. If you get really lucky, some of the gorillas might approach you under the watchful eye of your guide.

After the hour is up, the guide leads you back to the meeting point, and you head back to your accommodations or another activity for the day. It’s best to leave the day completely open should it take longer than expected to find the gorilla family.

Overall, the trek is mildly difficult, but most average hikers should be able to keep up without too much trouble. If you go during the rainy season, the trek may be more uncomfortable, but still doable.

What’s Involved on a Gorilla Trek

You can’t just show up in Uganda and expect to sign up for a tour. The Gorillas are a protected species, and their habitats are protected ecological areas. It’s far too dangerous to allow just anyone to wander out into the forest.

You’ll need to get a permit first. Permits allow you to access the section of forest where the different Gorilla families live, and each permit is issued for a specific part of that forest. If you have an interest in a particular gorilla family or a particular park area, you should make that request either of the tour group or when applying directly.

Uganda Gorilla Trek Pricing

Permits in Uganda are around $600 per person during the high season and as low as $450 during the low season. High season permits sometimes sell out months in advance, so if you plan to go during the busy season, you must book out as far as you can.

Going during the low seasons means smaller groups and easier permits, but the weather might not be as accommodating. The most significant complaint is the rain, so plan accordingly.

Getting To Bwindi

It takes about 10 hours to get to Bwindi from the nearest city ( Kampala to Bwindi is 550 km). You’ll need to budget for the car if you plan to drive yourself, or for the driver and car if you aren’t comfortable driving.

Some smaller airlines offer charter flights from the nearest airfield in Kihihi. You’ll still require some transport from the airfield to your accommodations, but the flight will cut down on the transport time to the national park.

Many tour companies figure in the cost of transport to your package if you’d prefer not to deal with the details. This will free you up for thinking about other things though it is indeed possible to manage the transport yourself.

Bwindi Accommodations and Lodges

There are lodges located in many of Uganda’s national parks including Bwindi. Accommodations include running water, en-suite bathrooms, and fantastic views of the forest.

Many of the cabins are eco-friendly and offer solar power along with designs that are intended to blend into the natural view. They are smaller lodgings that will give you a more intimate feel and make it easier to meet new friends if you so choose.

Some of the rooms are also family friendly, offering cabin style lodgings with a little more space. Many of the tour groups will be able to book accommodations that will fit your preferences to help you before and after your gorilla experience.

Best Time to Go Uganda Gorilla Trekking

There are several options for Uganda gorilla trekking best time to go. The weather is much more accommodating during Uganda’s high season.

January and February are reasonably dry, but this time of year is still considered the low season. It offers the best time to view gorillas without the huge crowds but before the rains hit.

March, April, and May are the rainiest months. Although many tour groups still operate during this time, more planning is involved in making sure that permits are still being issued. If they are, you’ll practically have the gorillas to yourself although the rain might make the trek uncomfortable for you. Pack accordingly.

June, July, and August are considered the high season. The weather is excellent and many tourists combine this trek with a trip to view the wildebeest migration in neighboring Tanzania. This time is the most difficult time to get a permit, and you must purchase a permit months in advance . This also means more gorilla watchers, making locating the skittish families much more difficult.

September and October are good months if you plan to combine with a trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro. The conditions should be just about right to handle the trek to high altitudes, but the second rainy season won’t quite have arrived.

November and the beginning of December are part of the second, smaller rainy season, and few tourists go during this time. Again, this is good for a quieter experience, but it might make planning difficult if the country doesn’t issue permits during this time.

Around Christmas and on into the following months are good times to go when the weather has greatly improved, but it’s still considered Uganda’s low season.

When you decide to go depends on your preferences, tolerance for rain, and any other trips you’ll combine.

Gorilla Trekking: Rwanda, Uganda or DRC?

You have three choices for finding the gorillas: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Most people consider Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking, but don’t forget the DRC.

Permits are the most expensive in Rwanda at $1500. Uganda costs around $600 during the high season and $450 during the low season. DRC issues permits around $400. Although Rwanda might seem like a massive price increase, it’s actually much more expensive to travel to both Uganda and DRC than it is to Rwanda, so the cost somewhat evens out in the end.

It’s best to fly into Rwanda for trips in all three countries. From Rwanda, it’s a simple car transfer of two to three hours to Ruhengeri Park. To get to Uganda, it’s a four-hour car ride with a border crossing for Bwindi. To the DRC, it’s three hours to cross the border before another 90 minutes to the national park.

All three countries offer equal chances to view the rare gorilla families, and each trek is staffed by people who are trained to locate the families. Although the most families live in Rwanda, this doesn’t increase your chances by too much since the families all have patterns of travel well known to the trackers.

Rwanda and Uganda both offer plenty of luxury and budget accommodations within the parks. DRC only has two choices at the moment, but each offers amenities and tranquil forest views. In one camp, gorillas have been known to make their way directly into the center of the lodgings.

DRC is currently in conflict , and while tour operators do their best to keep your safety in mind, concerns for safety should be at the top of your list. It offers the most as far as out of the way travel and serious adventure tourism, but heed warnings .

Rwanda is the best if you are looking for a more comfortable trek, either for personal preference or physical needs. It’s also best if your gorilla trek is merely a small part of a larger excursion. You’ll appreciate that everything is well laid out with minimal effort on your part.

Best Country for Gorilla Treks: Uganda

For the best of both, adventure and safety, gorilla safaris in Uganda are the best choice . It’s a beautiful safari destination in its own right offering stunning views, out of the way parks, and a variety of accommodations.

It’s still considered off the beaten track, even in the high season, so your Uganda gorilla tour will have a personal feel. It’s also a perfect trip to pair with time spent at Lake Victoria , one of Uganda’s most beautiful natural sites. Many tours operate out of Lake Victoria and will handle all the transfers necessary to get to Bwindi.

The gold trade in Uganda makes a huge comeback

Uganda’s Ministry of Finance recently disclosed that gold is yet again Uganda’s major export. This assessment is based on data compiled from the last 12 months leading up to February, where the gold trade accounted for 37% of all export revenues. The gold trade in Uganda had been hampered by tax disputes which cost the East African country Ush600 billion ($160.77 million).

Tax issues had hampered the Ugandan gold trade, an industry said to be raking in 44% of Uganda’s export income, at one point, according to the Bank of Uganda.

The gold trade had been interrupted for almost a year, following the tax debacle that was later addressed.

Back in May 2023, it was reported by the Ugandan Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, that Uganda has lost out on Ush600 billion ($160.77 million) in uncollected tax from the export of gold goods since July 2021 because of a dispute with exporters and refiners over levies.

In reaction to the claim, Ruth Nankabirwa, Uganda's Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, attributed the loss to a disagreement between the Uganda Revenue Authority and over 20 gold exporters and refiners.

However, a recent report seen in the Ugandan newspaper, The Monitor notes that the gold trade has rebounded dramatically, earning the country an average of $228.4 million per month, in the twelve months leading to February.

The report also noted that during the period under review, the gold trade accounted for 37% of total export revenue at a total of $2.7 billion, about a third of the total export income of $7.4 billion.

This figure indicates that around 45,988 kilograms of gold were sold during the financial year, a monthly average of 3,538 kilograms, the majority of which were exported to the Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates, which purchased around 98% of the precious metal.
