Drive Time Calculator

How to use drive time calculator, estimated time of arrival, travel time to home, meet the creator of the drive time calculator.

The drive time calculator – also known as the travel time calculator, is our innovative tool created exclusively for drivers. It helps you find out the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your car trip destination and determine the fuel costs of the journey.

So, if you are planning a vacation trip with friends in a seaside resort or would like to estimate the travel time to home by car, check out our drive time calculator!

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your arrival time at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive, including the cost per person.

To accurately determine your arrival time and the total driving duration, follow these steps:

Before entering any values, choose your preferred units of measurement , where applicable. For instance, you can opt for imperial or metric units when specifying distances. This selection will determine how the calculator interprets your inputs.

Enter the total distance of your trip.

Specify your average driving speed during the trip.

Enter the total duration of breaks you plan to take during the journey.

Specify the departure time , day, month, and year.

Upon entering these details, the tool will calculate the total driving duration and exact arrival time based on your input.

If you're interested in determining the costs associated with your trip , use the second section of the calculator and follow these steps:

Specify your car's fuel consumption rate .

Indicate current fuel price .

Input the number of passengers traveling with you.

The calculator will subsequently determine the total drive cost and the cost per person based on the provided information.

For example , consider a scenario where you must drive 140 km (87 mi) at an average speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). You plan to take a 30-minute break, and your departure time is January 22, 2024, at 7:00 pm. In this case, the calculator would compute a total drive time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, estimating your arrival at the destination on January 22, 2024, at 9:15 pm.

Moreover, if your fuel consumption rate is 8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 miles) and the fuel price is $0.90 per liter, the total cost of your journey would be $10.08. If you're traveling with a companion, you could split the cost, resulting in $5.04 per person.

🙋‍♂️ If you need to be at a specific destination by a particular time and are wondering when to depart, our calculator has you covered — it works in reverse, too! Here's how to use it:

Input when you intend to arrive at your destination in the variable arrival time .

Enter the total distance you need to cover.

Specify the average driving speed you plan to maintain.

If you plan to take breaks during the journey, enter the total duration.

The calculator will determine the optimal departure time , ensuring you reach your destination as planned!

Have more questions about the estimated time of arrival? Keep reading.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Visit our speed calculator to learn more about how to calculate speed.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

Total drive time = (distance/average drive speed) + total breaks time = 9h 28min

Arrival time: 21 February 2018 at 07:28 pm

Now, we want to know how much this journey will cost us. With our drive time calculator, the answer to this question is very simple!

  • Let's assume that our SUV car takes 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.
  • The gasoline price is €1.22 per liter.
  • We are traveling as a group of 4 friends -> Number of passengers = 4

The answer to the question is below:

Total drive cost = (distance/100) × car fuel consumption × fuel price = €98.52

Drive cost per person = total drive cost/number of passengers = €24.63

Super! Now, we know all we need – the exact travel time to home with an estimated arrival time and how much each passenger needs to pay for that journey. Let's start the engine! 🙂

We also have a great tool called traffic density calculator that helps you analyze the traffic on any road.

Check out the gas calculator , too, if you need to estimate the fuel cost for a drive.

I'm Filip, the mastermind behind the drive time calculator, and I'm a biomedical and electrical engineering graduate from AGH University of Krakow.

My motivation to develop this tool emerged during a road trip, where the challenges of planning a long journey, including costs and time uncertainties, became evident. In response, I envisioned a solution — a tool that calculates travel duration and considers essential factors like fuel costs. The outcome is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify journey planning , whether for extended trips or daily commutes.

How do I calculate the average speed for my trip?

To calculate your average speed for your trip, you must note the trip distance and drive time or travel time and follow these steps:

  • Subtract the total time used for breaks from the drive time.
  • Divide the trip distance by the difference obtained in step 1.
  • The value calculated is the average speed for the trip.
  • Verify your result with our drive time calculator.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

It'll take 3 hrs 35 mins without any breaks. Allowing for a 15 min break, it'll take you 3 hrs 50 min. Here's how you can calculate this answer:

If you take the I-90 W, Boston is 215 miles from New York.

Divide this distance by the average speed to get drive time without breaks:

215/60 = 3.5833 = 3 hrs 35 min .

Add a 15 min break to drive time for a convenient and safe drive to get a total drive time of 3 hrs 50 mins .

Verify with our drive time calculator.

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

Calculate total break time :

15 min + 60 min + 15 min = 1 hr 30 min .

Subtract this from 8 hours to get 8 - 1:30 = 6 hr 30 min .

Multiply this time with 60 mph average speed to get the distance traveled:

60 × 6.5 = 390 miles .

Verify this result with our drive time calculator.

This was somewhat unhelpful as I know the time and distance, but not the speed. Would be helpful if this calculator also could solve the other two as well.

A car can go from rest to 45 km/hr in 5 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Guys how much time will a cyclist take to cover 132 METRES With a speed of 8 km/ph

@Mike Depends on how fast that actually is. For every 10 mph above 60, but below 120, you save 5 seconds a mile. But between the 30-60 area, every ten saves 10 seconds a mile (if I am remembering correctly), and every 10 between 15-30 is 20 seconds. Realistically, it isn't likely isn't worth it, unless it is a relatively straight drive with no stops, in which case you will likely go up a gear for the drive and thus improve gas efficiency for the trip. Only really saves time if it is over long trips 300+ miles (in which case, assuming you were on the interstate) that 5 seconds a mile would save you 25 minutes from the drive, making it go from 4h35m to 4h10m. For me, I have family across the U.S., so family visits are usually 900-1400 miles. Even only driving 5 above usually saves me 90-150 minutes or so (since I often have stretches where I drive on US highways which have 55 mph speed limits)

I would like to know if driving fast is worth it for short trips. If I drive 10 MPH over the speed limit for 10 miles, how much time do i save ? Is there an equation for that ?

it helps me in lot of stuff

awesome, helped me notice how long my taiga (electric seedoo) is going to last.

    Speed, Distance & Time Calculation

In order to use the above speed, distance & time calculator, or do such math on your own, you will need to know two out of three metrics: speed, distance, time. You will need to convert the metrics to the same time and distance units, e.g. miles, kilometers, meters, yards, feet, and hours, minutes or seconds. For example, if you have speed in mph (miles per hour), time should also be in hours. If you have distance in kilometers, then speed should also be in km/h (kilometers per hour).

The unit of the result will depend on the units you input, but our speed calculator will conveniently display additional units where appropriate.

    Average Speed formula

The formula for average speed, also called average velocity in physics and engineering, is:

where v is the velocity, d is the distance, and t is the time, so you can read it as Speed = Distance / Time . As noted above, make sure you convert the units appropriately first, or use our speed calculator which does that automatically. The resulting unit will depend on the units for both time and distance, so if your input was in miles and hours, the speed will be in mph. If it was in meters and seconds, it will be in m/s (meters per second).

Example: If you took a plane from New York to Los Angeles and the flight was 5 hours of air time, what was the speed of the plane, given that the flight path was 2450 miles? The answer is 2450 / 5 = 490 mph (miles per hour) average speed. If you want the result in km/h, you can convert from miles to km to get 788.58 km/h.

    Distance formula

The formula for distance, if you know time (duration) and the average speed, is:

Example: If a truck travelled at an average speed of 80 km per hour for 4 hours, how many miles did it cover in that time? To find the miles covered, first, calculate 80 * 4 = 320 km, then convert km to miles by dividing by 1.6093 or by using our km to miles converter to get the answer: 198.84 miles.

    Duration (Time) formula

The time, or more precisely, the duration of the trip, can be calculated knowing the distance and the average speed using the formula:

where d is the distance travelled, v is the speed (velocity) and t is the time, so you can read it as Time = Distance / Speed . Make sure you convert the units so both their distance and time components match, or use our trip duration calculator above which will handle conversions automatically. For example, if you have distance in miles and speed in km/h, you will need to convert speed to mph or distance to kilometers. The time unit of the result will match the time unit of the speed measure, so if it is measured in something per hour, the result will be in hours. If it is measured in some unit per second, the result will be in seconds.

Example: If a train can travel 500 miles with an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long it would take it to complete a 500-mile route? To find the answer, use the formula and substitute the values, resulting in 500 / 50 = 10 hours.

How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Say you travelled a certain distance with a car or another vehicle and you want to calculate what its average speed was. The easiest way to do that would be by using the calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, you need to know the distance to a satisfactory approximation, for which you can use a map (e.g. Google Maps) to measure the distance from point to point. Make sure you measure closely to the path you took, and not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation. Of course, having a GPS reading of the distance would be more precise. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure you subtract any rests or stops you made from the total trip duration.

If the total distance travelled was 500 miles and the time it took you was 5 hours, then your average speed was 500 / 5 = 100 miles per hour (mph). If the distance was 300 kilometers and it took you 5 hours to cover it, your speed was 300 / 5 = 60 km/h (kilometers per hour).

However, if you're retiring anytime soon, you can kiss goodbye to big city life if you so desire; instead, you could move to a retirement-friendly town near NYC that features a relaxed aura and unhurried lifestyle while still being within reasonable distance of the Big Apple as and when you need to go there.

This list provides some of the best retirement towns near New York City; most are in New York State, while a couple are ever so slightly over the border in New Jersey. Each of these towns selected is beautiful in all forms and is less than an hour and a half away from NYC. You can make these towns your retirement oasis and conveniently drive to the city whenever needed.

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

16 miles travel time

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Best, worst times to travel for Memorial Day weekend

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Here's a breakdown of the best and worst times to travel by car depending on which day you are traveling:

Thursday, May 23

  • Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, May 24

  • Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between noon and 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 25

  • Best travel time: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 26

  • Best travel time: Before 1 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday, May 27

  • Best travel time: After 7 p.m.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

how long does it take to walk a mile

How long does it take to walk a mile? An expert guide

Plus, 4 easy ways to get more movement into your day

We've rounded up everything you need to know about walking a mile – with 4.4k of you Googling it every month, it's something that's you're definitely curious about - from how long it takes to the benefits of walking more regularly (fancy a walking challenge , anyone?). Read on!

What type of exercise is walking a mile?

Walking a mile falls into the low-intensity steady-state category of movement. This type of exercise is similar to things like a steady swim or meandering cycle (hopefully with a healthy snack at the end, eh?). It's a brilliant form of exercise that doesn't stress your joints, requires zero home gym equipment and can easily be made free or at least cheap.

In fact, research from the University of Bath found that LISS can be just as effective as HIIT (high-intensity interval training) when it comes to losing body fat – you just need to factor in extra time to complete the longer, slower activities.

Six benefits of walking a mile regularly

Walking regularly can help with any number of physical and mental concerns, from head to heart and hormonal response.

Regular walking can:

  • Improve your response to insulin which can help to get rid of belly fat and lose body fat .
  • Increase your fitness stamina – extra movement every day will help to keep your activity levels up and improving in the long term.
  • Increase brainpower. Research from New Mexico Highlands University found that walking helped increase brain blood supply through pressure sent through the arteries from the foot.
  • Lower your risk of heart-related conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
  • Improve mental health, according to the University of Michigan Health System , walking in nature has been linked to a more positive outlook. #Win.
  • Decrease the prevalence of life-threatening conditions such as strokes, depression and coronary heart disease.

'The regular movement and pace of walking help give your mind a break, you can de-stress, improve your self-esteem and regulate your mood,' explains mindfulness practitioner Dani Binnington .

'It is also proven that walking can help us to think more creatively ,' she adds. In 2014, research published by the American Psychological Association , walks were shown to allow participant's thoughts to flow more freely, helping them with problem-solving.

How long does it take to walk a mile?

The average time it takes for a woman at a healthy weight without any health conditions to walk a mile is somewhere between 14 and 21 minutes.

This is dependent on age, though – 'normal' for a 20-28-year-old is around 14 to 15 minutes, while the average for a 40-49-year-old woman is around 15 or 16 minutes.

This decline in speed is normal and natural. Research has found that your average walking pace will decrease by approximately −0.0037 m/s per year. When taken over a longer time period, this means you'll lose 1.2 minutes between 20 and 60 years old.

How long does it take to walk two miles?

Now, we don't want to sound like we're stating the obvious when we say that walking two miles will probably just take you double as long as walking one mile... but that's basically it. Factor in a minute or two for fatigue (if you're still building up your stamina), coffee buying or shoelace tying, but two miles will take you pretty much twice the amount of time as one mile.

This means walking two miles should take you anywhere between 28 and 32 minutes. If you're not near these numbers, see where you're at and try and improve on your time as you get fitter.

How many calories does walking a mile burn?

The number of calories burned while walking is dependent on a variety of factors: how quickly you walk, your current weight, your fitness levels and the area in which you walk (flat, hilly or mixed, for example).

However, in broad strokes, it is possible to work out how many calories you're going to burn. According to Harvard Health , the following guidelines are about what you'll be burning:

  • If you weigh 120lbs (54.4 kg): you'll burn ~ 65 calories per mile walked
  • If you weigh 160lbs (72.6kg), you'll burn ~ 105 calories per mile walked
  • If you weigh 180lbs (81.6kg), you'll burn ~ 115 calories per mile walked

Taking these figures, you could burn a rough estimate of 455 and 700 calories a week working a mile per day.

Four ways to add a one-mile walk into your day easily

Adding a one-mile walk into the fitness mix doesn't have to be an arduous affair. In fact, it might turn out to be the part of the day you start looking forward to most. Here are five easy ways to get a mile of movement in.

  • Set your alarm (double-points for sunrise alarm clocks ) to twenty minutes earlier. Dash on your gym kit and head for a timed walk around your area before getting ready for the day.
  • Set aside a portion of your lunch break to walk. Before or after food, it's your choice!
  • Heading to the gym ? Walk there (and back if it's short) instead of jumping on the bus or in the car.
  • If daytime is very busy for you, take twenty minutes after dinner and go for a short walk. It'll help demarcate the end of the working day and the beginning of your relaxing evening.

How to walk a mile faster

  • Stand tall, so that you maintain good posture. Slouching compresses your lungs and makes it harder to breathe and decreases oxygen intake. Slouching can also put strain on your back, neck and hips, making you more tired and imbalanced and cause you to walk less efficiently.
  • Take short, quick steps, rather than longer strides. Place your heel so that it lands just in front of your body, which minimises the effort required both to push the weight of your body over your foot and to swing your back foot forward to catch your body mass as it rolls onto the next step. If you take long strides, it is more effortful to bring your other leg forward.
  • Bend your arms and swing them to ensure postural stability. Research from the University of Michigan, USA and Delft University of Technology, Netherlands found that swinging your arms counterbalanced the body's twisting motion of two legs walking on a straight line and enabled the legs to waste less energy. Keep your elbows close to your body, though, rather than flinging and flailing them out to your sides.

How to measure your fitness progression when you walk a mile

You might start off walking at an average pace for your age but there's always that little bit inside of us wanting to get better, right? Right. And, as you walk more, you're likely to improve your fitness, too.

Use the following 1-mile walking test guide to work up from OK to excellent and track your progress as you go. Make sure you're walking on a flat surface (not a treadmill ) and check back each week to see how you're getting on.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This is a 4% increase over last year, with experts noting this comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

When is Memorial Day 2024? When is Memorial Day weekend 2024?

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Which will be more congested for Memorial Day travel — roadways or airports?

According to AAA, road trips are expected to set a record with 38.4 million people projected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.

Renting a car for your road trip? Florida-based rental company  Hertz  says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand, with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

But airports are also bracing for a large surge of travelers next weekend.

Is Memorial Day a busy airport day?

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11," AAA said in its press release.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly two million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

When are the best and worst times to travel on Memorial Day?

For those planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, transportation data and insights provider INRIX offers the best times to get on the road.

Experts advise drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said.
