Located in West Michigan, my hometown of Muskegon is one of the unique places to visit in Michigan in winter. My favorite is the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park . The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex is home to an Olympic size luge track. And for good reason, because Muskegon is home to a Silver Medalist Olympic Luge athlete, Mark Grimmette. He’s a fellow alumnus of my high school, so you can understand a bit of the pride. Did you know that this is one of only four luge tracks in the US?

If you’re not comfortable racing down the luge, there is a beginner track you can try. But that’s not all at the Muskegon Winter Sports Park Complex. You can also find:

• Ice Skating – both on an ice skating rink and a 1/4 mile trail through the woods. Seriously so cool!
• Snowshoeing on marked trails

Cross Country Skiing

Plus, the winter complex has adaptive sports, for those with limited mobility. Adaptive cross-country skiing, luge, and ice sleds are available.

Moving south a little bit before we cruise north, Grand Haven is a picturesque town and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan . It’s also one of my favorite places in winter.

Having lived there for a few years, winter in Grand Haven is quiet . It’s the best time to stroll the lake.

I often get asked, can you walk on Lake Michigan in the Winter? I wouldn’t. It’s been a long time since there has been a hard enough freeze on the Big Lake. Some of the smaller inland lakes would be fine. Always check with the locals before you walk on any frozen water.

Downtown Grand Haven also offers a variety of seasonal events throughout winter like Winterfest with a bonfire bash, snow volleyball, and live music. There’s nothing better than gathering around a bonfire in the middle of a snowy day.

Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is a great place for families and friends to visit during winter. One of the best things about Grand Rapids is that it’s been ranked as one of the safest cities in America. Grand Rapids is a great place to fly in as it’s only a few hours from many natural attractions.

One location for Michigan winter attractions that shines in Grand Rapids is Frederik Meijer Gardens sculpture park . This year-round garden truly takes on another look with snow-covered sculptures . In addition to walking the grounds, you can warm up in the indoor gardens and butterfly conservatory here.

Traverse City has a population of only 16,000 people. This charming northern Michigan town boasts skiing, golfing, skating and snowmobiling, as well as plenty of terrific restaurants and stores to explore. You’ll be certain to have a wonderful time here.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is near Traverse City and a great place for snowshoeing the dunes. If you just want to see the wild lake toss and turn with snowy and icy whitecaps, a visit here will still impress.

For a more active winter getaway, check out the nearby National Forest which features several miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. If you’re not quite ready to leave your snowy haven yet then book yourself into one of their cozy B&Bs where they serve hearty breakfasts every morning before sending you off on an adventure through all that this great state has to offer.

Mackinac Island

One of my favorite places to visit during winter is Mackinac Island. It’s a small island located in Lake Huron and has everything you need for a great winter getaway. There are many historic buildings, bike paths, and the best fudge in the world! The views of the frozen lake are incredible and they say it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth during this time of year.

Here’s the thing about Mackinac Island in the winter. You can get there as long as there is a ferry to take you. The main ferry only runs if the lake isn’t frozen over. Some places will also be closed during the winter months, but if you can get on the island, you’ll have it practically to yourself. Imagine taking horse-drawn sleigh rides down the center of thefa empty Victorian-lined streets.

It’s a peaceful little place you can take in at your own pace, only having to worry about the cold weather. And even then, you will find yourself fully bundled up and prepared for whatever comes your way. If you’re looking for peace yet one of the cool places to visit in Michigan, the island is perfect.

In addition to the quiet ambiance, there are still plenty of activities available. Ice fishing is an enjoyable outdoor activity and snowshoeing can be great exercise. If all else fails, you can always just relax and enjoy the silence of winter on Mackinac Island.

Northern Michigan

Ready to head to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula? The Great Lakes State has a lot to explore in this wintery wonderland. Head over the Mackinac Bridge to even more remote winter beauty.

We’ll talk about a few fun places to go in Michigan in the UP and then move on to some of the cities and special events.

Firstly, let’s talk waterfalls in Notherment Michigan.

Many folks know that Tahquamenon Falls State Park as a popular place. It’s also one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, Niagra Falls being the biggest. Tahquamenon Falls has both upper and lower falls. Tahquamenon Falls is located in Paradise, quite literally. Paradise, Michigan is on the Whitefish Bay of Lake Superior and about an hour from Mackinac Bridge in St. Ignace.

There are over 300 waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula and many of them freeze during the winter months, making the ice sculptures a sight to be seen. Find a full list of falls and road trip ideas here .

Choose from plenty of snowmobiling adventures in Northern Michigan as well, with either easy or challenging terrain. For an easier ride, try renting a single-track machine that is designed for the beginner rider. For more experienced riders there are lots of opportunities to challenge yourself on both groomed and ungroomed trails.

Where to stay:

Marquette is one of the “bigger” cities in the UP and home to Northern Michigan University .

The UP 200 sled dog race is an annual event that takes place in Marquette, Michigan. Each year the race draws participants from all over the country.

Usually, they are testing their dogs for a longer competition or trying to qualify for the Iditarod. The race covers 200 miles of snow-packed trails, with a total elevation change of 10,000 feet and eight checkpoints along the way. If you love dogs (or just need some adrenaline), dog sledding is a great event to check out!

There are plenty of lodging options near the starting line, so even if you can’t make the race, there are plenty of activities for your winter trip.

From museums and ice fishing to shopping downtown or warming up with hot chocolate at a local cafe, Marquette has plenty of things to do in the winter months.

Nearby Marquette is Eben Ice Caves , a truly spectacular occurrence in Michigan in the winter. The Rock River Canyon Ice Caves, also known as Eben Ice Caves are in Eben Junction. This is by far one of the best cool places to go in Michigan. When the snow melts, as it can do even in winter, it forms a waterfall effect and a natural cave. You will have about a mile hike to the caves and experts recommend using ice cleats to walk on the hard-packed snow and ice.

Located on Lake Superior, Munising offers a rugged and remote experience.

Located at 66 miles west of Munising along highway US-41, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers scenic views of the Lake Superior shoreline with miles of trails leading to sandy beaches.

The Grand Marais is also a picturesque town located in the heart of the Great Lakes region that has many shops and restaurants to explore.

Head back east past Munising towards Houghton, home of the Uinniversity of Michigan Copper Country Research Center. A great stop for those interested in copper mining history, this is one site where you can see what life was like during this period through preserved buildings from around 1900.

You’ll find other points of interest such as Ojibwa (Chippewa) cultural sites, local museums and geological features. You won’t want to miss nearby Porcupine Mountain ski resort for their adventurous snow tubing slopes or try ice climbing on the cliffsides!

For things to do in Michigan in February, check out ice climbing. A truly unique event, whether you go to participate or observe, Munising is home to the Michigan ice fest . You can even take a course to increase your skills. In the evenings, attend one of the many parties. If you’re there to watch, catch the action at Sand Point Road for climbers and incredible scenery.

Noquemanon Trail Network

Between Marquette and Munising is the Noquemonon Trail Network . The winter hiking trails have a variety of terrain, from rolling hills to steep climbs. Hiking in the winter is one of my new favorite things. I’ve never been much of a winter person, until I got the right gear for hiking.

You can find great views of the nearby lakes and rivers, as well as secluded areas for relaxation. There are several trailheads to choose from, so you can customize your adventure to fit your needs. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or an all-day trek, this area has something for everyone.

Be sure to prepare for all weather conditions, as the trails can get slippery when wet or icy during the winter months. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks!

With its stunning landscapes and a variety of routes, the Noquemonon Trail Network is one of the best places to explore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There are plenty of fishing spots too if you’re looking to catch something for dinner.

Frankenmuth

Back to the lower peninsula and the town that looks like it came straight from Bavaria.

There’s always something going on at Frankenmuth. At Christmas time, they have all sorts of fun activities and are home to the largest Christmas store in the US . They also have a great German restaurant with live music and dancing! You’ll be sure to enjoy yourself in this quaint little town.

Frankenmuth is located on the Eastern side of Michigan, about 3 hours from the bridge in Mackinaw City.

In the winter, Frankenmuth is home to Snowfest. Zehnder’s Snowfest features large snow and ice sculptures throughout the town. A tradition for over 30 years, you can come early to watch the ice sculpture carve blocks of ice with chainsaws and chisels. The annual event occurs in late January.

To the west of Detroit lies a town that is not just about the Maize and Blue. If you knew I was talking about the University of Michigan , you’d know I was in Ann Arbor.

This is more than just a college town, however. Ann Arbor invites you to get “Wintersmitten” each winter. I love the nod to the fact that we’re in the Mitten State too with this moniker.

For winter activities in southeast Michigan, festivals such as this are the way to go.

Wintersmitten is a perfect romantic things to do in Michigan in the winter weekend destination, with unique retail, vintage, and specialty shops. Plus, it’s home to a massive international food scene, with over 400 restaurants packed in this small destination. You can always take in a basketball or hockey game at the UofM while here, as well as hike or bike one of the many trails still open in winter.

Just south of Ann Arbor is Tecumseh. They, too, have an Ice sculpture festival each year and the clear-cut glass-looking sculptures are truly something to behold.

The town is filled with small-town community feelings as there is plenty of family-filled events such as scavenger hunts, games, and even balloon sculptures. Local restaurants offer a unique variety of cuisine from all over the world as well as locally grown produce and freshly caught seafood.

For those looking for a more relaxed vacation, the town is ideal for exploring nature trails or taking leisurely strolls along the beachfront. There are also plenty of art galleries, museums, and other attractions to explore. For the night owls, there are a plethora of bars and clubs where they can enjoy music and dancing until dawn.

Even if you can’t visit some of these iconic places in Michigan, and you will be in the Mitten State, these are some fun things to do in Michigan in the winter. Any of these activities take place in small towns and cities throughout the upper and lower peninsulas.

Fat Tire Biking

Fat tire biking is an excellent way to explore Michigan in the winter! This type of cycling is designed specifically for use on snow and icy surfaces, making it a perfect outdoor activity for those visiting Michigan when temperatures dip.

You can rent a fat tire bike from most outdoor rental companies, or find guided tours that provide all the necessary equipment. The best part? You don’t have to be an experienced cyclist to enjoy this activity – most fat tire bikes are designed to be accessible to any skill level.

Ice Fishing

I love ice fishing in the Michigan winter! When I was a kid, my dad and grandpa would take me out to some of their favorite spots. In those days, all I needed was a pole, a bucket of bait, and anticipation for the tug on the line that would signify a fish biting. If you haven’t been ice fishing, it’s one of the cool things to do in Michigan.

Nowadays you can find specialized gear made specifically for ice fishing that makes it easier and more enjoyable than ever before. Head to your local sporting goods store to pick up all the necessary items like sonar fish finders, heated shelters, gloves, and auger drills for cutting holes into the ice. Though you can still just take a pole and a drill for the ice.

Then do your research to find the perfect spot – maybe even one my dad and grandpa used to go! Trust me, it’s worth braving the cold Michigan winter to have a wonderful time out on the lake ice fishing with family or friends.

Many of Michigan’s state parks have cross-country ski trails, with over 50 state parks having designated ski trails for visitors to enjoy. With so many trails available, there are plenty of opportunities for people to explore and experience Michigan’s beautiful forests and woodlands on skis.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling is a great way to explore Michigan! Our beautiful Upper Peninsula (UP) provides plenty of trails for snowmobilers of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there are plenty of places to cruise on your sled this winter. One favorite destination is the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This area has over 100 miles of trails that offer a variety of terrains for all riders. The park also offers amazing views of Lake Superior and its rolling hills make for an exciting ride. Another great spot is the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The trails here take you through dense forests and along the picturesque Tahquamenon River. There’s also a campground, so you can make it an overnight trip and really get the full experience. If you’re looking for an extreme adventure, head up to the northern tip of the UP – Copper Harbor. Here, you can find some truly unique terrain like rocky outcroppings, sand dune-like hills, and even old logging roads that have been converted into trails. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Ice Skating

Ice skating in Michigan in the winter is a great way to explore the state and have some fun. Grand Rapids is home to Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink, right in the heart of the city, which is an ideal spot for ice skating. Michigan’s winter terrain is perfect for some of the best hiking around. With snow-covered trails and plenty of cozy cabins, you’ll be sure to find the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation during your trip. And while there are many spectacular state parks in Michigan, here are a few standouts to consider for your winter hikes. The first place to check out is Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This scenic park in Ontonagon County boasts over 60,000 acres of hot springs, stunning waterfalls, and incredible views all year round. The expansive forests also offer plenty of trails to explore during the colder months. Next on the list is Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Luce County. As one of Michigan’s largest state parks, it encompasses over 50,000 acres and nearly 40 miles of hiking trails surrounded by majestic landscapes. It’s also home to Tahquamenon Falls – one of Michigan’s most famous landmarks – so don’t forget your camera! Thirdly we have Mackinac Island State Park located on Mackinac Island in Lake Huron (no cars allowed!). This park is filled with history and iconic sights like Fort Mackinac as well as a plethora of outdoor activities such as kayaking and hiking along its hilly trails that offer breathtaking views from its bluffs. Finally, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising has stunning lake vistas along its 42 miles shoreline plus 15 miles of hiking trails full of sandstone cliffs and waterfalls – an ideal setting for a peaceful winter hike!

What is Michigan like in the winter?

Your first question might be to ask, Is Michigan cold in the winter? And truthfully, it depends on where you are and what your definition of cold is. Michigan ranges from the Lower Peninsula and southernmost cities such as Detroit. Here you will get snow and temperatures will go into the teens.

The region typically experiences temperatures well below freezing from November through March, and snowfall can range from light to several feet of accumulation over the course of a season.

In the Upper Peninsula, you can go as far as Isle Royale National Park , an island in Lake Superior. However, it is closed during the winter. Houghton in the winter has high temps only in the 20s and almost daily snowfall.

How to Get to Michigan in the Winter

If you’re flying within the United States, you have several options. Detroit and Chicago are both major airports.

Detroit is obviously in Michigan, but the Chicago airports are only a few hours from some of our Western Michigan destinations.

Plus, you can always hop on a connecting flight to places such as Traverse City and Marquette.

Grand Rapids, also offers a lot of direct flights on Allegiant Air and similar.

Unless you plan on staying in the bigger cities, I would recommend renting a car or RV for some winter camping . Make sure you’re comfortable driving in snowy conditions.

Best Time to Visit Michigan in Winter

If you’re looking for things to do in Michigan in December to February, your later winter months are better in the lower peninsula. Visiting a little later in the winter season, the upper peninsula is better for things to do in Michigan in March and even April.

Fantail Farm Wagon & Sleigh Rides - 4700 Wallaker Rd, Benzonia, MI, Sold as group rides, not by the seat.  Your group will be in a sleigh/wagon to yourself. These Michigan sleigh rides are 45-55 minutes in length, through the woods and fields of their 120 acre farm. You might see lots of winter critters along your journey so keep a look out!  Such fun things to do in the snow for the whole family!

Sleighman - Horseback & Sleigh Rides -  2115 Olmsted Ln, Ishpeming, MI,  Hop aboard a one  hour private horse drawn sleigh ride with two Norwegian Fjord Horses for up to six people for a set rate.   What a fun thing to do in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Winter! Perfect romantic sleigh rides in Michigan...hint, hint, great Valentine's Day gift!

Antler Ridge Farms-   6259 M-72, Williamsburg, MI, It's so fun to go on a  sleigh ride  in fresh falling snow!  Come out and enjoy an old fashioned sleigh ride through the woods for a great bonfire, hot chocolate and gooey marshmallows to roast. You will be pulled by two grand Percheron Draft Horses. Super fun activities to do in winter!

Fantasy Carriage Company  and Frankenmuth Carriage Company  - Frankenmuth, MI, Not a sleigh ride, but these lovely horse drawn carriages are a fun experience in the falling snow in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Frankenmuth is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter.

Black Horse Farm - 11177 S Plowman Rd, Empire, Michigan. Enjoy a s leigh ride through the wooded hilly terrain of the Black Horse Farm. Each Michigan sleigh ride is about an hour with a stop mid-way at a warming house for hot chocolate. The sleighs can carry up to 12 people so bring all of your loved ones. There are several scenic lookouts over Glen Lake and Lake Michigan. A wesome place for a Michigan horse drawn  sleigh ride !  

Wild West Ranch -  1861 52nd St, Fennville, MI, Come out for a  sleigh ride  for a mini winter getaway in Michigan!  Bundle up and have some fun on horse drawn sleigh rides through the woods! Rides are 40 minutes long and are quite scenic.

Common Gentry Carriage Co - 3665 15 Mile Rd NW, Kent City, Michigan. Create unforgettable memories on Common Gentry Carriage Co's  classic winter sleigh rides! It's a treasure to hear the sound of German sleigh bells ringing across the countryside, while you sit cuddled up with your loved one on their 1800's horse drawn sleigh. 

Pond House Ponies - 2115 Olmsted Ln, Ishpeming, MI 49849 Horseback, Carriage, Sleigh Rides. Fun things to do in Michigan in winter!

Cook Family Farm - 4282 Hayes Tower Rd, Gaylord, MI 49735 Enjoy a gorgeous horse drawn sleigh ride through God’s country! Sleigh rides are approximately 40 minute with hot chocolate and cookies afterward.  Add these sleigh rides to your list of romantic things to do in Michigan in the winter!

Ranch Rudolf Inc - 6841 Brown Bridge Road, Traverse City, MI, Ranch Rudolf offers horse-drawn sleigh rides from December to late February! Their beautiful Belgian horses, Prince and Monte, will take you for a scenic ride through the Boardman River Valley. The ride itself takes approximately 45 minutes. Sleigh rides are popular activities to do in winter!

Fruit Ridge Hayrides - 11966 Fruit Ridge NW, Kent City, MI, Can you hear those sleigh bells jingling? Enjoy the winter wonderland on a snowy sleigh ride and later, get warmed up around a toasty campfire. Rides are approximately one hour in duration and may be combined with a one hour campfire, either before or after the ride. One of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Thunder Bay Resort -  27800 M 32 Hillman, Michigan. See elk from a horse drawn carriage or sleigh lead by massive draft horses!  You will be literally be whisked "over the river and through the woods" to the resorts elk preserve to see majestic Rocky Mountain elk.  Perfect winter activities for adults and kids!

Ride the Michigan Polar Express Train!!

Every winter, Chris and I LOVE riding the Michigan Polar Express Train .  The Pere Marquette stream train is absolutely incredible and is not to be missed. 

We also love riding the Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village in Flint. You will feel like you stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting when you visit Crossroads Village!

Plus, as a fun FREE family friendly activity we also always ride the cute little Northern Express train in Midland Michigan.

Michigan Winter Rafting is Incredible! Adventurous Things to do in Michigan in Winter!

Jordan Valley Outfitters (Located in Charlevoix) is a great company that offers winter rafting! I had an absolute blast rafting down the river with them last winter. Each raft has a guide that steers the boat from the back of the raft so you don't have to worry about navigating.  

You will stop half way for delicious hot chocolate, hot apple cider and a small snack for a chance to rest and stretch your legs.

Perfect for families and couples. Plus, you can join another group if you are traveling solo...that's what I did.  Definitely one of my favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!  

I'd suggest waiting until snow is in the forecast as this rafting trip is so scenic when the banks are snow covered!  Perfect outdoor winter activities for adults and kids!

• Waterproof Windproof Fleece Snow/Ski Pants like these . Water and wind proof is key since you will be sitting for a while with the potential of getting wet and cold.

Visit Mackinac City This Winter!

Have you ever thought of visiting Mackinac City in the winter ?  If you aren't a fan of crowds, visiting this iconic city in the winter may be perfect for you.  

The scenery is gorgeous and the hotels are cheaper.  This is one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Explore Grand Rapids in Winter

1.  Visit Blandford Nature Center - 1715 Hillburn Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Spend time in nature by hiking the trails or renting snow shoes. This is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter. 

2.  World of Winter Festival  in downtown Grand Rapids - January 6 - March 5, 2023. See art installations and performances, play games, take walking tours and more, all FREE! Check their World of Winter website for performance programs and info.

3.Go ice skating at the Rosa Parks Circle Ice Skating Rink ! Location: Rosa Parks Circle, 135 Monroe Center St NW, Grand Rapids. $2 ice skate rentals! Super cheap and fun family activity in winter!  All skate times must be reserved in advance, so check their website for details. Ice skating is one of Chris' favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Best Things to Do in Frankenmuth in Winter

We look forward  Zehnder's Snowfest  every year!  I think it's probably the highlight of our month as we love to dine on Frankenmuth's famous famous chicken dinners, explore the town and check out the insane snow sculptures!

This is one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter with kids! It's also perfect for a romantic winter getaway for couples!

Discover The Eben Ice Caves! See Our Map of the Caves, Where to Stay and Directions

Trailhead Location : Frey Rd, Deerton, MI 49822

Directions to Eben Ice Caves. From Eben Junction, take 365 north to 388 east which turns into Frey Road and dead ends.

It's Best to Wear Ice Cleats - Crampons 

Why ice cleats?  Well...here's the deal.   If you are walking through several inches of snow along an icy shoreline or in icy caves, snow covers the ice.  You won't even know it's there until you "find it."  After slipping several times during a long winter hike in 1 foot of snow along a Lake Huron path in Tawas, I invested in a good pair.  The cheap ones fall off.  I know this because I lost one after it kept falling off. You can't find it in deep fresh falling snow.

These Kahtoola ice cleats have twelve 3/8 in. stainless-steel spikes, reinforced eyelets for durability and elastomer harnesses.  Heel tabs for easy on / off. 

What's Cool?   These ice cleats were mentioned in the Backpacker magazine Gear Hall of Fame in 2017!

Extremus 23-Spike Ice Cleats, Crampons for Men or Women - Budget Pricing

What I like about these ice cleats is the strap across the top to keep them firmly in place. A cheaper pair that I have falls off so these will stay on while ice fishing, hiking, walking and exploring.

Each foot also has 23 individual stainless-steel cleats that are positioned perfectly on the heal and fore foot. These cleats will give you incredible confidence while walking or hiking so you can avoid serious injuries from falling.

Where to Stay in Eben Junction

We highly recommend staying in Munising which is 20 miles (24 minutes) from the Eben Ice Caves. 

AmericInn by Wyndham Wetmore Munising

We have stayed at the  AmericInn  a couple times as it is in a good location for the falls, restaurants and beaches.  I liked that the bedrooms were separate with a closing door that blocked hall noises while sleeping. We utilized the nice pool and hot tub too.

Holiday Inn Express Munising - Lakeview

This pretty Munising Hotel has a fantastic breakfast, wonderful views of the Grand Island Harbor Bay and very nicely furnished rooms. You will definitely enjoy your stay in this  Holiday Inn Express in Munising .

Superior Stay Hotel, Marquette, Michigan

We were thrilled at the prices of the Superior Stay Hotel in Marquette . It's a super clean, super updated modern hotel, too. It's a bit more of a drive to the Eben Ice Caves, but there are great restaurants and things to do in Marquette. Why not stay an extra day to explore this area?

Michigan Tubing & Tobogganing

Love tubing and tobogganing? Check out Echo Valley, located at 8495 E H Ave, Kalamazoo, Michigan. When we lived in Kalamazoo it was one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter.

Tubing and tobogganing is available on the weekends, no reservations needed. Echo Valley is perfect for families and groups. Food and beverages are available in their warming lodge and you can get warm around their circular fireplace while watching the tubers and tobogganers zip down the hills! Day rates, cash only.

Indoors Fun: Things to do in Michigan in Winter in Auburn Hills, Michigan

This Michigan day itinerary is absolutely one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in Winter. We head to Auburn Hills which is not far from Detroit  and park at the  Great Lakes Crossing Mall.

And the best part?  You only have to park once for all the fun below! Oh, and it's all indoors !  It's one  of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Skip the Line: SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium Admission Tickets

SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets  is such a great place to spend a couple hours.  See more than 5,000 sea creatures including seahorses, jellyfish, and the giant Pacific octopus!

We love watching the blacktip reef sharks and cownose swim above us in the underwater tunnel.  This is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Once you are parked (free parking), enjoy  Sea Life Aquarium  and then walk about 20 feet to the  Rainforest Café!  Enjoy roaring tigers, frequent overhead thunderstorms and other fun interactive characters in the Café for lunch.  They have great drinks too!

After lunch, wander the expansive  Great Lakes Crossing Mall  to get your steps in while shopping! It's a pretty mall, updated, clean and cheerful. There's a food court too if you need some snacks.  It's one of our favorite things to do on a cold day!

Then, head to Legoland, right in the mall! (Get your tickets below!)

LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Michigan is a great place to spend the afternoon with your kids in Auburn Hills! 

Grab tickets with all-day admission so you can see the magic of the LEGO® Factory, explore Miniland, make a super cool LEGO race car, and enjoy LegoLand's cool 4D theater.  During the winter, definitely include Legoland for things to do on a cold day with kids.

WHAT ABOUT EVENING ACTIVITIES?

For evening fun, catch a movie at the AMC Star Great Lakes 25 Theate r located inside the mall, close to Legoland!  What an awesome way to spend the day during a cold winter in Michigan! It's one of my favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

We recommend spending the night because it might be hard to pack this much fun into one day, especially with small children!  There are so many fun things to do in Michigan in winter, take the time to enjoy it!

See Incredible Views of Lake Huron and Photograph a Lighthouse!

I have hiked the trail from the Tawas lighthouse at the Tawas State Park out to the end viewpoint several times in both summer and winter. Snow can be above your knees in winter, so wear ski pants, high boots and crampons .  The views are incredible!  This is one of my favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter after a fresh snow.

Stay Warm This Michigan Winter: See Some Art, Watch Glassblowing and Have Coffee!

Detroit Art Institute  - The Detroit Art Institute is an incredible place to visit in the winter, we absolutely love it there. The building itself is breathtaking. Stop for coffee in the café that reminds me of Harry Potter! Plan to spend about 3.5 hours exploring and learning! Add the Detroit Art Institute to your fun things to do in Michigan in winter list!

Flint Institute of Arts - You really must visit the Flint Art Center this winter! Their glassblowing demonstrations are absolutely incredible.  My favorite section of the Flint Institute of Art is the glass art, as it defies gravity! Plan to spend about 3 hours exploring and learning! (Free, close and safe parking)

Ann Arbor Art Center  - For an artistic winter getaway, tour the Ann Arbor Art Center for local and national art. We spent about 2 hours exploring the multilevel facility. There are so many fun things to do in Michigan in winter!

8. Escanaba

Escanaba is a comparatively quieter and more secluded city in Michigan. It remains filled with heavy snow from December to the first week of March. The forests and landscapes around the city make it more appealing and beautiful. Because of its location being situated on the shores of Little Bay de Noc, it remains a hub for a lot of snow sports. Snowboarding and snowshoeing are common sports in Escanaba. This city offers many nature trails for hiking as well. Cross-country skiing and tubbing will give you the experience of the perfect adventure.

Great Lake Ice Racing and Ice fishing are two sports that you can participate in and can enjoy the most while spending time in Escanaba.

Midland is known for the midland city forest and the city park. This is the area which attracts travelers to the city throughout the year. Once filled with snow, during winters, it offers a perfect place for children and adults both for several fun activities. In the park, there is a 7.5-mile-long snow trail. Midland City Forest Park becomes a center for various activities like cross-country skiing, sledging, snowshoeing and tobogganing. There is also an outdoor skating rink which you would love as you would skate under an open sky.

10. Jackson

If you want your winter vacation filled with something new, exciting and fun, then you must head towards Jackson. Jackson is another city in Michigan which blooms its best during winters. It’s situated just in the center of the state. It has many museums and a planetarium which makes it a perfect place for anyone to explore and learn more while on vacation. 10 of the best places in the US to see the northern lights in 2024

Astronomers predict this year will be the best in the last decade to see the northern lights. We have the sun's current solar cycle to thank for the stronger aurora borealis in 2024. Scientists say the sun is hitting its "solar maximum," or the highest activity rate during its current solar cycle, meaning more frequent and brighter northern lights. The sun's energized particles hit Earth's upper atmosphere, which then scatter toward its north and south poles. The redirected particles are what we see as the dancing hues of green, yellow, and magenta across the sky.

There are a few things you should do to plan before your trip. Winter is typically the best season to view the northern lights because of its longer, darker nights. It's possible to take a solo trip to see the lights, but many people recommend going in a group or on a guided tour for safety, especially if you're in an unfamiliar place.

Before venturing out into the cold, dark night, be sure to check an aurora forecast to understand what will likely happen in the sky. You'll need to venture away from any strong sources of light pollution like cities. Finally, get comfortable and be patient! Sometimes the aurora is only visible for a few minutes; sometimes it'll go on for hours.

If seeing the northern lights has been on your bucket list, now could be the best time to make it happen. Though Norway, Finland, and Iceland are the usual suspects when chasing northern lights, you don't have to travel outside of the United States to do it. Many of the country's northernmost states have dark skies that give a good chance for seeing the aurora borealis.

Stacker used various sources to create this list of 10 of the best destinations in the United States to view the northern lights.

Fairbanks, Alaska

There are many reasons why Fairbanks, Alaska, is considered one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights. The most important reason is it's inside the "aurora oval," which sees a higher concentration of aurora lights. It also has many nights with clear skies.

Fairbanks is home to some of the world's best aurora forecasters at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks . The season for viewing the lights in Fairbanks is from Aug. 21 to April 21. During that time frame, late August through early September usually have the best chances for viewing the aurora borealis while enjoying summer activities.

New Town, North Dakota

The nice thing about North Dakota is that if the aurora borealis is going to show up here, it will likely be visible across the entire state. The only things you'll need to ensure are clear skies and a low-light moon because sometimes a radiant moon can make the sky too bright to see the faint glow of the northern lights.

If you're looking for a nice vantage point to take in the night sky, Crow Flies High State Recreation Area near New Town, North Dakota, in the western part of the state, is an ideal place. The scenic stop overlooks Lake Sakakawea and gives an unobstructed view of the night sky. You could also chase the northern lights inside Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora, North Dakota.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana's Rocky Mountains puts travelers just south of the U.S.-Canada border. It's a certified International Dark Sky Park, so light pollution won't get in the way of viewing the aurora. The national park has many ideal lookout locations, such as Lake McDonald, a popular destination for kayaking during the day. For those who prefer a less remote viewing party, The Northern Lights Saloon in nearby Polebridge, Montana, offers live music while you skywatch.

Aroostook County, Maine

The earliest written account of seeing the northern lights in Maine dates back to 1719. It described the colorful display as both dreadful and indescribable. Today, the aurora borealis still leaves people breathless, but thankfully they seem to enjoy it more than those who viewed it more than 300 years ago.

Aroostook County, Maine's northernmost county bordered by Canada, is one of the best places on the U.S. east coast to try to catch the northern lights. It has some of the darkest skies east of the Mississippi. Visit in September or October to ensure the dark skies are clear of clouds. For those who like to gaze at other natural wonders, the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge is also a great place to birdwatch and spot other wildlife.

Newport State Park, Wisconsin

Nearly two hours from Green Bay, Wisconsin, the state's only dark-sky park sits on the edge of the Door peninsula. Late December through early March bring the best chances to see the aurora borealis during high auroral activity. Being on the shore of Lake Michigan gives viewers a better, unobstructed view of the northern horizon, which is important in catching the northern lights from the lower 48. People can also use the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's aurora forecast tool to get a 30-minute heads-up on whether the northern lights will be visible near their position in northern Michigan.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan

North of Wisconsin's Door peninsula is Michigan's Upper Peninsula, another ideal place to see the northern lights. The remote peninsula has hundreds of miles of shoreline along Lake Superior, making it easy to view the sky. If you find yourself in Michigan's Lower Peninsula instead, Port Crescent State Park and the Headlands International Dark Sky Park are good options. October, November, and April are the best months to see the aurora borealis in Michigan, although viewers have spotted it earlier in the fall and spring.

Duluth, Minnesota

It's safe to say spots all along Lake Superior are great for viewing the aurora in the lower 48 because Duluth, Minnesota, is another place that gives visitors a good chance to see the northern lights.

Duluth is to the west of Wisconsin's and Michigan's viewing areas but sits at roughly the same latitude, which means chances for seeing the northern lights go up when there's increased solar activity. Duluth has prime places to see the northern lights, including Hawk Ridge, White Sky Rock, and Little Stone Lake.

Idaho Panhandle National Forests

Go to the northernmost tip of Idaho for your best chance at capturing a glimpse of the aurora borealis. About 120 miles from Spokane, Washington, the Idaho Panhandle National Forests—which also cover small regions of eastern Washington and western Montana—are also a camper's and hiker's paradise. Check out Priest Lake for one of the best vantage points in the state. Add to the beauty of the lights by watching them both in the sky and their reflection on the lake.

If you'd prefer to stay a little further south, Heyburn State Park near Chatcolet Lake is also a great place for chasing the northern lights. Opt for a spot along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes' bridge on the lake.

Utqiaġvik, Alaska

The northern lights are visible across most of Alaska. Still, those looking for a more adventurous journey may consider traveling to Utqiaġvik, the most northern community in the U.S. During the winter months, the sun sets on Utqiaġvik on Nov. 17. It doesn't rise again until Jan. 24, giving the small town 67 days of darkness, with only a little bit of sunlight shining on the horizon. That little bit of twilight means northern lights chasers will still need to wait for the night hours to see the celestial phenomenon. The aurora borealis typically isn't as strong in Utqiaġvik compared to Fairbanks since this small northern Alaska town is at the edge of the zone that tends to get visible lights.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The archipelago off the northwest coast of Washington State is known for many things: ferry rides, uncrowded beaches, and world-class whale watching. Stargazing may not be at the top of visitors' lists, but it should be, especially during the solar maximum. The islands have low light pollution and get more than 247 days of clear skies, giving it the perfect combination for viewing the northern lights. There's usually increased aurora activity in September and March, although there are several local reports of catching the northern lights year-round, including in midsummer.

The Best Places for the Northern Lights

The northern lights, known as the aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light show visible at certain times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They occur when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating vibrant streaks of blue, green, pink and violet dancing across the night sky. 2024 and 2025 are an excellent time to catch the northern lights: Solar activity will be at a peak, making for a more impressive experience, if you're in the right place.

The best places to see the aurora borealis have little light pollution, clear skies and no precipitation. The lights are only visible at northern latitudes when it's dark outside, so the months from September to April are best for seeing the aurora. There's also a Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the aurora australis; there are fewer easy spots from which to view this phenomenon, but if you're lucky, it can be equally brilliant.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks is by far one of the best places in the world to view the northern lights, as it's located directly under the auroral oval. This ring-shaped zone sits around the Earth's geomagnetic North Pole and is generally associated with the most vibrant aurora sightings. Visitors can expect to see the lights on an average of four out of five clear nights during aurora season, which lasts from late August to late April.

You can book a northern lights tour to see the aurora from the springs and tubs at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This excursion includes round-trip transportation to the resort from town, a soak in the hot springs, a visit to the Fairbanks Aurora Ice Museum and an aurora viewing tour; dinner and drinks centered around Alaska produce are an option extra with hot drinks supplied.

There's more to Fairbanks than just the northern lights: If you visit in late summer, consider family-friendly activities like a ride on the Riverboat Discovery or gold panning. For a festive holiday experience in the winter, head around 15 miles out of Fairbanks to visit the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole. Travelers can also see ice sculptures in February and March at the impressive World Ice Art Championships or take a dog-sledding or snowmobiling tour .

Where to stay: For excellent chances of aurora viewing, book a private igloo at Borealis Basecamp, a top glamping resort located on 100 remote acres of boreal forest about 25 miles from Fairbanks. With activities like dog-sledding on top of aurora viewing, past visitors regularly describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tromsø, Norway

Located about 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of several top spots to view the northern lights in Norway. At the darkest point of the aurora season – which runs from September to early April – the sun doesn't rise in this northern part of the country, although there is twilight during the day. With this level of darkness, there are more opportunities to see the aurora.

Tromsø itself is a small but lively city, so there's plenty to see and do when you're not looking up at the sky, including a visit to the beautiful Arctic Cathedral. In late January to early February, the city hosts the Northern Lights Festival, a 10-day music and performing arts event featuring a variety of musical genres.

Aurora chasers can view the lights on their own while in town, but to get a better view, it's recommended to head away from the city lights. Arctic Circle Tours is one company offering guided trips, with small groups for a more personal vibe. Alternatively, adventure-seekers can embark on an exhilarating husky trekking expedition in the Arctic wilderness.

Where to stay: For accommodations with harbor views, look no further than the Scandic Ishavshotel – guests love it for its convenient central location in the city, as well as its plus-sized breakfast buffet with plenty of choices.

Luosto and Rovaniemi (Lapland), Finland

Lapland is located within the Arctic Circle in the northernmost part of Finland. The northern lights are most visible here between the end of August and April – and approximately 200 times a year – so there are many opportunities for aurora spotting. Finnish Lapland is also known as home to the Sámi people (the only recognized Indigenous group in the European Union region), some 200,000 reindeer and Santa Claus – who can be visited in the town of Rovaniemi, the region's largest city and a great base for your aurora expedition.

Consider venturing roughly 70 miles north of Rovaniemi to the resort town of Luosto, set among the picturesque and hilly landscape of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Here, you can also spend a magical evening outdoors under star-filled skies during a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered forests. Jaakkola Reindeer Farm offers a reindeer sleigh tour to spot the aurora once weekly; it includes a stop to warm up at a bonfire camp with snacks, hot beverages and local fireside stories.

Where to stay: For a bucket list experience, watch the impressive light show from a glass igloo at Santa's Hotel Aurora & Igloos in Luosto. Past visitors love the cozy atmosphere here, boosted by amenities like saunas and log fireplaces. If you're sticking to Rovaniemi, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is a stunning choice, with designer cabins perched among the snow-covered taiga forest.

Orkney, Scotland

This group of captivating (and mostly uninhabited) islands, located about 10 miles off Scotland's remote northern coast, is one of the best places to see the northern nights in the U.K. Fall and winter are the best seasons to witness the aurora, also known in local Shetland dialect as the "Mirrie Dancers," with fall bringing the highest proportion of clear nights. A few places to see the spectacular light show include along the coast at Birsay or the Broch of Gurness, an archaeological ruin on a sweeping and dramatic coastline.

In addition to the aurora, Orkney is home to breathtaking coastal landscapes and more sheep than you can count (try some local lamb, if you can). Travelers can also visit the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several monuments dating back 5,000 years.

Where to stay: During your visit, plan to stay in the historic town of Kirkwall, the capital of the Orkney Islands: The no-fuss Ayre Hotel offers harbor views, and past visitors compliment the hearty meals in the hotel restaurant. Spot the aurora close to town at Inganess Bay and Wideford Hill.

Yellowknife, Canada

Yellowknife, the capital of Canada 's Northwest Territories, dubs itself the "Aurora Capital of the World." Thanks to its position in the middle of the auroral oval, the city puts on one of the world's most awe-inspiring light shows. The period from mid-November to the beginning of April is the recommended time to spot the aurora, but it's also possible to see the aurora during more hospitable weather from late summer to early fall as the lights are visible up to 240 days a year.

Located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife boasts winter sports such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you visit in March, plan to attend the monthlong Snowkings' Winter Festival, which features events and activities like a snow-carving competition, a snow castle, live music and more.

For a unique experience, book a tour through Aurora Village to view the lights. The property will pick you up from your hotel and take you to its site, where you can stay warm in a tent while sipping hot beverages. The Aboriginal-owned Aurora Village also offers activities such as dog-sledding or snowshoeing excursions.

Where to stay: Warm up in the fireside lounge at The Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. Previous visitors note the warm and helpful staff as a strength here.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

The optimal time for seeing the illuminated skies in the northern part of Sweden, known as Swedish Lapland, is between early September and late March. The small Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi sits around 125 miles above the Arctic Circle on the Torne River and is an ideal locale for aurora viewing. You'll fly to the nearby Kiruna Airport to get here. With the village's origins dating back to the 17th century, you can still find some of the original homesteads, including an old timber cottage. Today the village boasts 800 residents – and more than 1,000 dogs.

Where to stay: If you're up for a chilly overnight adventure, reserve accommodations at the world's first permanent ice hotel, the aptly named Icehotel 365. Each of its artist-designed suites is sculpted from ice with a unique theme and maintains temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius (about 23 degrees Fahrenheit). The rooms also feature beds with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags so you can bundle up during the night. While you're at the property, take advantage of the guided "Northern Lights Safari on Snowmobile" or embark on the "Moose Safari on Horseback" atop an Icelandic horse.

Reykjavik, Iceland

October through March is the best time to chase the aurora borealis in Iceland . There are numerous natural parks and attractions throughout the country where you can view the show during the long and dark winter, but the capital city of Reykjavik also offers many options for accommodations, restaurants, tours and other activities for your visit. For optimum aurora viewing in the city away from the light pollution, head to Öskjuhlið. This wooded and hilly area in Reykjavik sits at 200 feet above sea level and has walkways and paths where you can see the nighttime show.

Atop this hill sits Perlan, which houses the only planetarium in the country and a museum featuring exhibits about Iceland. Perlan is also home to the world's first indoor ice cave and glacier exploratorium. During your visit, don't miss the panoramic views of the city from the building's fourth-floor observation deck. From this vantage point, you'll be able to see the Snæfellsjökull glacier; Keilir, a volcanic mountain; and Esja, the mountain of Reykjavik.

Where to stay: While in Reykjavik, splurge on an overnight tour with Buubble Tours. This experience includes breathtaking sightseeing spots and a night spent under the magical northern skies in a transparent bubble at the 5 Million Star Hotel. For longer stays, consider the eco-friendly Eyja Guldsmeden Hotel, with sweeping views of the city – guests love it for its cozy yet chic Scandinavian design.

Southern Iceland

While Reykjavik is a great aurora-viewing spot if you like having amenities close by, consider getting out into Iceland's stunning, otherworldly countryside for a unique backdrop for the northern lights. One unique place to see them is the black sand beach at Reynisfjara (but watch out for the dangerous waves here). Alternatively, head to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon and seal habitat, where the aurora's reflections in the icy water are truly beautiful.

There's no shortage of tours that will stop by these locations and more for possible aurora sightings. Consider a 10- or 13-day tour around the country with Fun Travel, or a four-day option from Arctic Adventures. If you want to do things at your own place, it's also possible to self-drive – just know that road conditions can be icy, particularly in the depths of winter (although Icelandic roads are generally well-maintained).

Where to stay: Hotel Rangá is a formidable option for aurora-spotting. It offers a variety of special amenities, such as aurora wake-up calls, a lookout deck and snowsuits to keep you warm if you're outside viewing the lights. Past visitors praise Rangá for being a comfortable yet luxurious place to relax, be it in the outdoor hot tubs or the cozy and sociable bar.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Greenland may not be the most accessible place to travel for viewing the northern lights, with limited flight options (mostly via Iceland), but those who make it here will be thrilled they did. The tundra of Kalaallit Nunaat – the Greenlandic name for the country – is one of the best places on the globe to see the aurora from September to early April.

For the more adventurous aurora seekers, head to the top of the Greenland Ice Cap for spectacular views of the lights. This impressive glacier covers 80% of the country and is accessible via the tiny town of Kangerlussuaq. Located on a fjord right along the Arctic Circle, the town, often described as a gateway to Greenland, was a former U.S. Air Force base and is now home to Greenland's main airport. The town is known for having clear skies on some 300 nights per year, so chances of a sighting are particularly good here.

Tour company Guide to Greenland offers various tours, from two-hour aurora-viewing trips to a tough but rewarding multi-night dog-sledding expedition across the ice. For a less strenuous experience, companies like Nordic Saga Tours offer cruises through the Arctic landscapes around Kangerlussuaq.

Embrace the winter and set sail for the Arctic Circle to experience the aurora in northern Norway. The 13-day "In Search of the Northern Lights" cruise itinerary with Viking departs from London for the North Sea with stops in ports of call that are top aurora-viewing locales, including Tromsø, Alta and Narvik, plus a stop in Amsterdam en route. The cruise ends in Bergen, Norway.

While on land, take in the natural beauty of the snow-blanketed landscapes and book bucket list excursions like a night spent in an igloo or a reindeer sledding adventure. You can also chase the lights into the wilderness by snowmobile, take a dog sled ride under the stars or view them from a Sámi tent atop the mountain Pæska in Alta. This Viking Ocean Cruises itinerary is offered with departure dates from mid-January to mid-March.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Michigan

Regarded as one of the top spots in the U.S. to see the aurora outside Alaska, Headlands International Dark Sky Park sits at the top of Michigan 's lower peninsula, less than 5 miles from Mackinaw City. While the northern lights are less common here due to the relatively southern location, the best time to catch a glimpse of this phenomenon is typically during the spring and fall – and appearances can usually be predicted a couple of days in advance. The park even maintains an online Clear Sky Chart so you can check the weather forecast before you go.

There are also other stargazing opportunities throughout the year at Headlands. During the summer months the Milky Way is visible across the sky, and late summer evenings entertain visitors with meteor showers.

Where to stay: If you're visiting between late April and the end of October, splurge on a stay at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, where the aurora should also be visible. Guests describe this iconic property situated along the shoreline of Lake Huron as positively charming, thanks to its historic nature and manicured grounds. The resort also offers a host of outdoor activities from bike rentals to swimming.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located on the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Voyageurs National Park is an approximately 218,000-acre labyrinth of boreal forests, lakes and streams. Voyageurs is Minnesota's only national park; it's also unique in that the park's interior is accessible only by boat, unless you visit by snowmobile in winter. As a certified International Dark Sky Park , Voyageurs provides opportunities to view the Milky Way on clear evenings, especially in the summer. Year-round aurora viewing is also possible on evenings with clear dark skies, but chances are better during the winter, when it's dark for longer.

In November, December and March, Reykjavik has statistically slightly more frequent clear skies, while in January and February, Tromsø is a little better, but the difference isn't big: Both places have clear skies only around 25 to 30% of the time in these months. Reykjavik has slightly warmer weather, though, so between that and the ease of access, it has a slight edge over Norway for seeing the northern lights.

Alaska and Iceland are known for stellar aurora light shows, so deciding between them may depend on which destination you find more convenient and more to your tastes. In Alaska , the city of Fairbanks is considered a great spot to catch the northern lights. (They can still be seen elsewhere in the state – for example, in Anchorage, although they're not so common in more southern locations like Juneau). The advantage of Fairbanks is that you won't need a passport , yet there aren't many direct flights from the lower 48 states. Despite being an international destination, Iceland may be more accessible (particularly from the eastern U.S.), thanks to fairly regular flights to Reykjavik from numerous American cities.

Fairbanks does offer statistically better weather for aurora viewing: It has clear skies more often than Reykjavik, particularly in March when the Alaska city experiences them around 45% of the time (compared to about 25% for Reykjavik). But you'll have to be able to tolerate the cold. While temperatures in Reykjavik hover around freezing in midwinter, Fairbanks is a veritable deep freeze, with average highs around 5 degrees Fahrenheit down to lows colder than minus 5 in December.
