Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside. 

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to. 

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time researching reusable travel toiletry bottles—I’m talking hours of research over the past three or four years. It started casually, a way to procrastinate when I had to pack for a big trip. But it quickly became a habit: To this day, if I’m in an REI or a CVS, I’ll often drift over to the travel-size toiletries section to browse. In fact, while you were reading the news about the IHG ban of mini bathroom amenities , I was probably poking around online to see if any new travel size bottles had popped up as a result of the announcement.

But despite my constant research, I don’t need an upgrade right now: I’m flat-out obsessed with Matador’s FlatPak toiletry bottles .

I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. These “bottles” really look more like high-tech bags. They are not the chic containers I’d always imagined myself carefully lining up on a hotel vanity. But Matador offered to send me a sample, and, intrigued by the high-tech features, I wanted to give the FlatPak travel size bottles a try. Here’s my review of the Matador FlatPak and why they quickly won me over.

Matador FlatPak travel size bottles are lightweight and compact

Like most of Matador’s adventure gear, the FlatPak bottles are designed for minimalist and ultralight travel. (This is the same company that created a picnic blanket that fits in your back pocket and a travel towel that packs into a hand-size, key-ring container.) Each 3-ounce, TSA-approved bottle weighs just 11.5 grams empty—Matador claims that’s five times lighter that most comparable silicone toiletry bottles, which feels about right to me. And because they’re made from an extremely durable, waterproof, nylon-based Cordura fabric, these containers can squish around the deodorant, pill bottle, and various items of makeup that clutter my dopp kit.

Matador FlatPaks are easy to fill

No, the FlatPak bottle is no wide-mouth wonder, like the GoToob+. But the fill opening is wide enough if you’re pouring from a standard shampoo bottle or pumping from a soap dispenser. Plus, there’s a rigid structure around the cap that helps keep the fabric pocket open while you’re filling. Sometimes you’ll need to give it a firm shake to move contents down as you go, but I can usually fill mine in under a minute.

They shrink to fit their contents

This is hands-down my favorite thing about the FlatPak bottles: The more shampoo and conditioner I use, the less space they take up in my luggage. And because the sides of the bottle are fabric, I can really get at every last drop.

As an overpacker, I love using up the things I bring on my travels. It makes me feel accomplished and gives me a guise of efficiency: If I used it all, clearly I needed it. An over-cluttered toiletry bag full of empty bottles, on the other hand, is incredibly frustrating.

It’s never leaked on me

Nor has it popped open or exploded in a suitcase. The flip-top cap clicks securely into place, and the bag’s seams are welded together. Nothing is escaping this bad boy.

There are drawbacks to this wonderful bottle, of course. It only comes in black, so if you amass a FlatPak fleet, it’ll be hard to tell them apart. Yes, there is a spot for a label on the snap loop, but I’ve been using these regularly for a year now and never once thought about filling out that label. Or looking at it, for that matter.

Matador also makes a breathable, waterproof bar-soap holder from similar Cordura fabric (pictured at bottom right).

Some reviews I’ve read of these say they’re hard to clean, but I travel every few weeks and so have used mine often enough—and always filled with the same products—that I cycle through their contents pretty regularly and haven’t yet had to actually try to clean one out beyond a quick rinse. I have, however, found that lotion tends to dry out a little and become thicker if left to linger in a FlatPak bottle.

An alternative travel toiletry bottle

If you’re accustomed to using whatever travel toiletry bottle was on sale at the local drugstore, the hard-sided bottles that come with Sea to Summit’s TPU Clear Ziptop Pouch ($27) are a good, more traditional pick.

The pouch itself, which is made out of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), is the primary product, as far as Sea to Summit is concerned, but there are plenty of devotees of the semi-translucent, leakproof bottles inside the pouch. The variety pack includes three 3-ounce bottles and three 1.5-ounce bottles, all of which are TSA-approved, making it great for people who use a range of products. Some consumers love the narrow-opening caps, which allow them to dispense the contents more precisely; others point out that such a feature is better for more viscous liquids, but make it arduous to squeeze out thicker products such as conditioner or sunscreen.

Why haven’t I included any silicone bottles? Plenty of people prefer silicone options, which are somewhat rigid but still have a nice squish that allows them to pack in easily with other toiletries. But the market is flooded with cheap versions and I’ve had too many brands leak on me. Also, I find them a little clunky. But who knows? All of these mini-plastic-bottle bans might spark a new era of reusable travel-size toiletry bottles. For now, I’ll stick with my awesome, space-saving FlatPak bottles.

We dig how many options there are, but you might not need everything listed, which is wasteful if you don’t use it. The tubs are BPA-free, PC-free, and Phthalate-free. Plus, they’re FDA food safe, so you can also eat out of them. The top screws on and is easy to remove when you’re ready to access whatever you’ve got stowed inside.

The hard plastic exterior is easier to break than silicone, especially if heavy gear is loaded inside your daypack . However, we haven’t had any issues with these travel containers breaking. Even if you aren’t sure what you’ll stow inside, the GoTubb almost always comes in handy once on a trip!

What You Should Know: Not much use outside of toothpaste.

There are a ton of travel size bottles and travel containers out there, but we haven’t found nearly as many that work for toothpaste. Matador’s reputation for filling the gaps of available travel products continues, enabling you to refill your toothpaste without as much environmental impact.

Finding a set of travel size bottles for your shampoo, conditioner, and other goops isn’t very difficult. However, finding something that will work for your perfume or cologne is another story. Is your entire Instagram feed aesthetic photos of vacations in Italy and Greece? It appears the groupthink of travel sent everyone to the Mediterranean this year. If you are also beauty product-consumed, one of your first thoughts is how did they fit their multi-step skin, hair, and body care routines into TSA-approved sizes to look beautiful on their adventures.

While you can buy travel-sized products at your local drugstore, we bet they relied on transporting their tried-and-true products. This turns our attention to toiletry bottles: “They’re a convenient way to make sure you’re abiding by TSA regulations, on top of staying organized,” explains Chris Luce, a buyer for The Container Store .

The concept is straightforward but we found out (after testing 14 different toiletry bottles, sprays, and bags) that the results are not: Some leak, some break, and some are impossible to clean and reuse. What We Love: They come with suction cups on the bottle to attach them to a wall.

What We Don’t Love: While we’re grateful for the provided labels, you can’t actually change them and customize them.

Aside from the basic needs of toiletry bottles—like leak-proof caps, lightweight material, and easy cleaning capabilities—these bottles come with a suctioning cup that allowed us to attach them against the shower wall while in use. They also come with built-in labels, like shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and soap. While we are grateful for this, we wish we could add in more labels or customize what they say. Still, it made organizing our beauty products much easier, without the need to write what each bottle contains with a sharpie. And because there are two three-ounce bottles and two two-ounce bottles, there was more flexibility in packing smaller items that require less luggage space (i.e. eye creams vs. body lotion).

Due to the larger opening, it was extremely easy to fill and clean the bottles without wasting any product. At the end of our trip, we were able to scoop out any remaining product from the bottom of the bottle, sans mess. We were also very pleased to see that the airplane pressure didn’t cause any creams to burst open, even the more watery ones. All in all, we’re happy to report that these bottles are perfectly reliable and practical for travel.

What We Love: They come with interchangeable magnetic labels and tons of options to categorize them.

What We Don’t Love: The capsules are rather small, and can’t fit a lot of product.

For the travel connoisseurs and aesthetically inclined, you’re going to want to get this Cadence capsule set. While it’s on the pricier side, the hexagon-shaped toiletry bottles are not only (ridiculously) cute, but practical as well, thanks to their magnetic nature. That’s right, we were able to attach the rectangular walls of these bottles onto one another, allowing them to stay put and organized wherever we went. But it’s not just the walls that are magnetic, but the top of the lid and the interchangeable labels, which you snap onto each other and can customize as you please.

The set is made up of six 0.56-ounce bottles, where we were able to choose between eight different colors for every bottle, as well as between 22 different worded labels and nine different icons (for every bottle). 0.56 ounces is quite small, so while it’s not our go-to for things like shampoos and conditioners, it fit the perfect amount of face wash or facial moisturizer for an extended weekend getaway. It also makes it transportation-friendly, as it doesn’t take up too much luggage space. The thick plastic also made them very sturdy and safe, giving us peace of mind that nothing would break or spill. And the icing on the cake? You can wash it in the dishwasher.

What We Love: There is a strap at the top that allows you to hook them onto a bag.

What We Don’t Love: It’s difficult to fill them with thicker lotions.

Best flat, best for hiking, best lightweight — these flat toiletry bags (which come as a set of three) truly fit a number of categories. There were several key components that made this much more practical for those who are always on the go, whether that’s trekking a mountain or cycling through a bike tour. The first was the clip-on strap at the top of the bag, which allowed us to hook it on the exterior of a backpack or purse, instead of it taking up space in the interior of the bag. The strap even has an empty white space, intended for us to write (in permanent marker, otherwise it would wipe away) the label. We never even had to worry about it getting weathered out while dangling off the backpack, because the thick and durable exterior of the pouch was scratch resistant and—get this—waterproof.

We found that we could fill the toiletry bag with anything that was the consistency of shampoo and below. It’s nearly impossible to fill it with something as thick as a lotion, due to the smaller opening. It’s the same opening that makes washing it a bit tedious as well, albeit not impossible. We got the most use out of it for our liquid products like micellar water (no spillage!) and runny shampoo. It felt so secure the entire time, even when we squeezed, tossed, or dropped the bags, there were no signs of damage or leakage anywhere.

What We Love: There are enough bottles in different sizes to cover an entire skincare routine. 

What We Don’t Love: We wish the provided labels were more customizable.

Here is something for anyone with a ten-step skincare routine. If you need a squeeze bottle for your moisturizer, a spritz bottle for your setting spray, and a pod for your eye cream, then this is the best toiletry set you could ask for. But it goes beyond just different-sized bottles, it offers essential pieces like a cleaning brush and a bag to carry it all together as well. All in all, this set has four bottles, four jars, two spray bottles, two scoopers (to cleanly dig out your creams from the jars), a funnel (for easy product transfer), a cleaning brush, a sticker with 12 label names, and a clear bag to carry it all together. Whatever your beauty routine, this set has a travel-sized bottle to fit it.

We found it very easy to fill the silicone bottles and were pleasantly surprised at how much they held. A single one of the biggest bottles was 2.9 ounces, which held just enough sunscreen to get us through a four-day beach-side vacation. We were further impressed by the near-indestructibility of these bottles as well. We pushed down, threw, and tossed the bottles and they acted completely unfazed. When it came to cleaning them, the provided brush, while cute, was really only useful for the spritz bottle. The rest was easy to clean with a simple paper towel and some water.

With a total of eight bottles, you won’t have any trouble fitting your micellar water , vitamin C serum , setting spray , and any other gobs and goops on vacation. And with the three different applicators, you can still have a sanitary routine like you would at home.

We didn’t realize how helpful clear bottles were until we could actively see just how much product we were using up on our trip, allowing us to pace ourselves appropriately — a necessity, considering that the largest bottle was 1.3 ounces, far less than the allowed 3.5 ounces for travel. It’s more ideal for shorter trips, or products that don’t need to be used in larger quantities like body lotion—not just for its size, but for its thicker consistency that’s slightly more difficult to squeeze into the little opening. Still, the rigid bottles kept everything perfectly concealed, giving us peace of mind that our pricey skincare products were secure in the provided clear pouch. What We Love: At three ounces, they’re one of the bigger toiletry bottles offered.

What We Don’t Love: We wish there were different-sized bottles for some of our smaller creams.

You didn’t spend your hard-earned money on expensive skincare products just to have half of it pour out of your toiletry bottle during travel. To get our money’s worth, these carry-on bottles ensured that no leakage of any kind would occur, even with something as fluid as water. Not only did our products not leak, but they were easy to access out of the tub, thanks to how the bottle flexibly rolls up and pushes everything out. When securely shut, no amount of pressure or throwing against the ground caused the caps to burst or the tub to break.

The opening is also quite wide so that pouring liquids in and out of the bottle is easy. At three ounces per bottle, it’s also one of the larger options on this list (remember that the max allowed by TSA is 3.4 ounces), and gave us enough shampoo and conditioner for a one to two-week vacation. The 16 labels provided gave us more than enough options to sticker the right identifier on the bottle as well, keeping everything nicely categorized. We also loved the stylish clear zipped bag that came with the bottles, allowing us to further organize our bottles and keep everything together in our suitcase. We only wish there were different-shaped bottles included as well, as some of our creams—like eye creams —would work better in a smaller tub.

Best Silicone: Mrsdry Travel Bottles

What We Love: The food-grade silicone is safe to carry food too.

What We Don’t Love: It doesn’t come with any labels.

There’s a lot to consider when entrusting your skincare in another container. These Mrsdry Travel Bottles are made of food grade BPA free silicone, meaning it’s safe for all kinds of consumable liquids, from toners to salad dressings, and even baby food. Not only are they safe, but sturdy as well, as we found out when we gave it our best trying to puncture it in any way. It held its ground as we threw it on the floor and squeezed it tight with the cap closed. Nothing spilled, and no tears appeared. The walls of the bottle felt so strong, that it gave us confidence it would last a lifetime (pretty impressive, considering the affordable price tag).

Cleaning the bottles was also relatively easy, depending on the liquid we put in it. Micellar water simply needed to be rinsed out, whereas lotions required some extra care. We mixed some soap with water and gave it a good shake. Like the previous option, this one came with a clear bag as well, which helped keep all the bottles together during travel. What it didn’t have, however, were labels. The only way to distinguish the products apart was by the color of the bottle, so you’ll need to rely on your memory to know what’s in each bottle.

Other Options You Might Like

Kitsch travel containers.

At $10, we thought this option was a great budget piece to travel with. It comes with three refillable pouches that hold up to three ounces of liquids. The little bags took up very little space in our luggage, and they never spilled any product during one of our squeeze tests. That being said, we believe the affordable price tag matches the quality of the product. We can’t say for certain how long the semi-flimsy material of the bag will last, even if it survived our testing period. Professional organizer Katrina Hassan from Spark Joy London explains that “using a flat toiletry bottle has the advantage of taking up less space, but due to the material used to create the product, is more prone to damage and fraying over time.” We also found that it was difficult to wash the interior of the bags if we put something with a thick consistency in it. For single-use or hiking occasions, this makes for a fantastic low-budget and lightweight option.

Cosywell Travel Containers

This set of nine cream jars is ideal for containing thicker creams, like body butters and sunscreen . They come in two different sizes, namely 0.67 ounces, 0.33 ounces, which is just enough facial sunscreen to last a little over a week. Unfortunately, they couldn’t contain any watery products like micellar water, toner, or contact solution, which would faintly leak out the side. They also didn’t provide any labeling to be stuck on the containers. However, the sturdy plastic container is very durable and will last a very long time. Combined with their compact size, these bottles are perfect for small-dosed creams or weekend getaways.

Our Testing Process

To begin, we searched the internet for the most popular and well-rated toiletry bottles. From there, we selected 14 to be tested in our NYC lab, and sent them to our team of editors, beauty, and travel experts. We then performed a number of tests on the bottles, including filling them with liquids with different consistencies, like micellar water, shampoo, and body lotion. We paid close attention to the ease at which each product entered the bottle. We considered how much each bottle could carry and how long they might last on a trip. We then applied pressure on the closed bottles to see if anything spilled, leaked, or burst. We even threw them on the ground from waist-high. Lastly, we observed how easy it was to clean out the bottles to reuse them.

Each toiletry bottle or pouch was rated 1-5 (five being the highest) in each of these categories: ease to fill, size, durability, and cleanliness. Only those that passed all the tests were considered for this article. We averaged out the scores for each category and all seven of our winners scored above a 4.5. We considered the pros and cons as well as all of the testers’ notes to write this story. We also consulted with three packaging experts to get insights on our winners and how to shop for toiletry bottles.

What to Keep in Mind

The first thing you need to know is that the amount of product allowed in a single bottle for carry-on luggage is 3.4 ounces (100ml). Each person is then allowed a quart-sized bag (7” x 8”) of such bottles. Therefore it’s important to consider how you want to organize your creams and liquids in certain sized bottles. Shampoos, conditioners, and body lotions will likely take up the most space considering their frequency of use, so you’ll want bottles that are three ounces or larger. Consider the INSFIT TSA Carry-on Approved Containers or the Mrsdry Travel Bottles in this case. If you’re looking for something to hold your facial moisturizer, vitamin C serums, or eye creams, then you can get by with smaller containers, at which an option like the Cadence Build Your 6 may be more suitable. When shopping for toiletry bottles, consider what kind of shape each beauty product would best transfer into. There are plenty of reasons to love toiletry bottles. While drugstores typically offer travel-sized products, the more unique, niche skincare products in your cabinet most likely do not. For those can’t-live-without items, you’re going to want to turn to reusable toiletry bottles. You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. We found this bag to be deceptively spacious, given that it looks like a simple pencil pouch at first glance. What dopp kits are great for is space; we were amazed by how much could fit in this bag, especially because it's expandable with side clips and adjustable webbing straps. As such, it's ideal for longer trips where you'll need as much space as you can get. We also love that it's made from an antimicrobial and antibacterial nylon (yes, it's water-resistant), though we think it could use a little more organization beyond two interior pockets and one exterior one.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultra-thin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multi-day trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. Before it's opened, the bag looks just like a little quilted briefcase; inside is an extraordinary amount of storage. Unzip the perimeter and the bag unfurls into four panels of hanging storage for your toiletries, which we found perfectly capable of storing just about every toiletry in the book save for full-size bottles of shampoo and body wash. While most of the storage compartments are variously sized zippered pockets, some actually have elastic bands to help hold your items in place.

The quilted material is made of polyester, which we found to be a little difficult to clean. It is water-resistant, though, and the texture adds a nice visual quality. Plus, it comes in ten colorways.

The clean, minimalist design that Béis is so loved for comes through in its cosmetic case: a sturdy bag with plenty of space for makeup aficionados. For starters, it's offered in eight elegant earth tone hues. But then there's the simple rectangular shape, which feels almost handbag-like in its sculptural form, as well as luxe hardware that adds to that handbag quality.

Though this bag can carry all types of toiletries, it's specifically designed with cosmetics in mind. That's evident from the removable mirror and brush holder, which has PVC material where the brush heads will go for easy cleaning. There are also a few slip pockets, which we found especially helpful for palettes. One thing to note, however, is that the main compartment of this toiletry bag is simply a vast space without any dividers to organize individual products. That said, we can report that nothing broke or spilled during evaluations.

Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to be stuffed into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

Made from ballistic nylon (and offered in three colorways), this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

Made from Italian pebbled leather, this toiletry bag is extremely elegant in each of its three colors: ecru, soft rose, and black. We found that this is high-quality leather that's not so delicate you have to worry about damaging it when stuffing it in your backpack or weekender.

As for storage, there are two main compartments: one with an internal elastic pocket for storing larger items and another that has elastic straps to hold items like makeup brushes in place. They open like a clamshell, and between them is a detachable pouch for smaller items. The pouch is ideal for a few items that can be used to refresh your makeup on a travel day, but it can't hold enough products for a full face.

The best thing about a pouch like this one is that it's very straightforward — all you have to do is toss in your items without giving much thought to organization. We loved this particular toiletry bag because it's more spacious than it seems at first glance. That's particularly true of the one zippered pocket inside: it was able to hold seven makeup brushes.

By the same token, the lack of organization might be frustrating to some. Depending on your preference, you might wish there were a few dividers or additional pockets to keep things a little tidier inside the bag. Still, the amount of space it has for items is impressive, and for some travelers, that might be just what they're looking for.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

• Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag : We love the soft, water-resistant neoprene material of this bag, as well as the two detached pouches for easy organization. (And did we mention the colors? Those are beautiful, too!) Unfortunately, we found it to be a tight fit to squeeze both of the detachable pouches into the main bag when all three had items in them.
• State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit : This is a spacious bag with a detachable pouch for additional storage — there's not much to not like here. But we think it's a bit too expensive, and we found the hook to be too small to use in many cases. Because it's so spacious, it's best for longer trips, as we think it might take up a bit too much room in a carry-on bag.
• L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag, Medium : A favorite for decades, this bag is the king when it comes to storage space and organization — there are pockets for just about everything. Some might find the sheer number of storage spaces to be overwhelming. But others, particularly those going on long trips or families who might be sharing a toiletry bag, will love the roominess.
• Baggu Dopp Kit : This bag packs flat, which is great when you need to store it somewhere. But when you expand it, you'll find that it's large enough to carry all of your toiletries and then some. The only thing we worried about was the durability of the materials. Though it did not fail any of our rigorous tests, we suspect it may wear out over time.

We tested 52 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab to determine the best products.

Testing started with an analysis of the bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

Then we packed the bags with common travel essentials like toiletry bottles, makeup, and dental products, among other items. We then re-evaluated the design of the bag, noting overall capacity; convenience and security of organizational compartments, pockets, and pouches; closure functionality (such as zippers, magnetic clasps, and Velcro tabs); and overall sturdiness and stability of the bag.

Next, we put the bags into weekenders, carry-on luggage, and backpacks to see how they'd fit. We also carried around the larger bags to evaluate the feel of the toiletry bags in them.

Finally, we rated each toiletry bag on its capacity, design, portability, and value, all the while considering extra characteristics like the material's water-resistance, ease of cleaning, and any extra features, such as hanging straps or built-in mirrors.

Testing of the toiletry kits then continues for a period of six months on our real-world trips, and we will continue to update this article based on the results.

When the bag was fully packed, we placed it inside a large weekender bag to get a sense of its weight by carrying it around our lab. We also checked how much space the bag took up inside the weekender bag to determine if there was ample room to store other items, such as clothing and accessories. We then determined whether the bag would be suitable for weekend trips and/or longer vacations.

After rating for all attributes, we checked each bag's price to rate the overall value.

If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

While a clear bag is not explicitly stated on all sections of the TSA website , this is the common practice and can speed things up at the security checkpoint. Toiletry bags that don't hold any liquids, as well as toiletry bags that will be checked in your suitcase (regardless of their contents), do not need to be clear.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from hair products to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.
