Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona

cathedral rock tours

Most iconic red rock formation in Sedona.

Cathedral Rock in Sedona is not only famous, but it is magnificent and awe-inspiring.  It is a favorite of visitors to Sedona.  The most recognizable view of Cathedral Rock is best seen from the Crescent Moon Picnic Area located on Oak Creek at Red Rock Crossing.  This area is known for swimming and picnicking, but most of all taking photographs.  Cathedral Rock is the most photographed landmark in Sedona.

To get to the Crescent Moon Picnic Area, take State Route 89A in West Sedona to Upper Red Rock Loop Road, follow the signs.  Park hours are from 8am until dusk throughout the year.  Day use fees apply to vehicles as well as pedestrians and bicyclists.

From Crescent Moon, there are trails that follow the creek.  However, if you want to climb Cathedral Rock Trail, read on for some suggestions of access points.

Cathedral Rock Trail

Cathedral Rock Sedona

Hikers will love climbing Cathedral Rock Trail.  The trail leads you right to the saddle of the red rock formation where the views are phenomenal.  Cathedral Rock is one of the best places to see a sunrise or a sunset in Sedona. Check out our list for the Best Sunsets in Sedona here.

This hiking trail is short but strenuous, with the most difficult part near the top where the trail narrows and becomes more of a rock climb up the side of the mountain.  Experienced hikers will love the challenge, while casual hikers may have trouble.  The trail is dog-friendly; however it is not recommended for our four-legged friends.  Because of the intensity, small children probably won’t like this hike either.  Bring plenty of water, wear a hat and wear hiking boots to avoid sliding down the face of the slippery rocks.

How to Access Cathedral Rock Trail

cathedral rock tours

Back O’Beyond Road at State Route 179

The Cathedral Rock Trail is extremely popular.  Access to the trailhead is located off State Route 179 and Back O’Beyond Road.  Due to the popularity, parking is difficult to find and traffic has caused problems for the residents on Back O’Beyond Road.  Thursdays through Sundays and busy times, the City of Sedona closes the road at State Route 179.  On Mondays through Wednesdays, arriving early in the day or later in the afternoon may be better times to access the parking lot and trail.

Sedona Shuttle Trail Bus to Cathedral Rock Trailhead

The Sedona Shuttle offers a trail shuttle to the Cathedral Rock Trailhead.  Simply park your car at the North 179 Park & Ride lot located at 1294 SR 179, corner of SR 179 and Bowstring Drive and take a shuttle bus to the trailhead.  This bus will also take you to the Little Horse Trailhead. Buses run every 15-45 minutes Thursdays through Sundays.  During peak season in March and April, the shuttle bus runs 7 days a week.  The fee to take the trail shuttle is free. It should be noted that the parking lot for Cathedral Rock will be closed during shuttle bus hours.  Find out more about the Sedona Shuttle Trail Bus by visiting their website at https://www.sedonashuttle.com.

What if the Back O’Beyond Parking Area is Full or Closed?

If you are visiting Thursday through Sunday, use the Sedona Shuttle Park and Ride.  However, Cathedral Rock can be accessed from other trails in the area.  Although Back O’Beyond Road is the closest to the trailhead, you can also get to the same trail by taking the following trails.  These suggestions add quite a bit of distance to your hike and may not be suitable for everyone.

Little Horse Trailhead Parking Area to Cathedral Rock Trail.  From the Little Horse Trailhead, there is a walking path that takes you along the highway and to a sidewalk that leads you to the traffic circle and Back O’Beyond Road.  Recently, the police have closed the road due to traffic problems and will sometimes turn hikers away who intend to walk the street to the trailhead.  Back O’Beyond is a very narrow road and not pedestrian friendly.  It is NOT recommended to walk this route.  Instead, from the Little Horse Trailhead you can take the Bell Rock Trail to the HT Trail, Easy Breezy Trail or the Templeton Trail which all take you to the Cathedral Rock Trail.  Taking these trails will add miles to your hike and may not be suitable for every hiker .

Cathedral Rock Trail Access

Yavapai Vista Point Trailhead , Courthouse Vista and Bell Rock Trailhead Parking Areas lead to Cathedral Rock. These parking areas have access to several trails that lead to the Cathedral Rock Trail.  These access points will add several miles to your hike.  There are several other trails at these parking areas that lead to some other spectacular views too, so look on Google Maps or at the trail signs for the most scenic way.

Take the Baldwin Trail.   Take Verde Valley School Road from the Village of Oak Creek. The road turns to dirt as you leave the neighborhoods but is passable with a high profile vehicle.  From the Baldwin Trail, you can access the Templeton Trail which will take you to the Cathedral Rock Trail. Check for trail signs for the most direct route.

Access it from Red Rock Crossing.  If hiking really isn’t your thing and you just want to see the view and take some pictures, as mentioned before, the Crescent Moon Picnic Area is a great place to see Cathedral Rock.

All of these trailhead parking areas require a Red Rock Pass.  To find out more information about these passes and where to purchase them, read our article about Sedona Red Rock Passes .  Our list of Best Sedona Hikes can help you choose your next hike. Don’t forget your Sedona hiking gear , you’ll need a good sun hat, water bottle and hiking poles for this hike.

Cathedral Rock is known as one of Sedona's four vortexes (the other three include Bell Rock , Airport Mesa and Boynton Canyon ). Some believe that vortexes are places where the earth emits an energy that fosters healing, meditation and self-exploration. Though all of Sedona is considered to be a vortex, there are certain areas, such as Cathedral Rock, where the energy is said to be the strongest. Many past visitors have claimed to feel tingly sensations while hiking here; others have felt nothing.

The 1.2-mile out-and-back trail to Cathedral Rock, which is located about 2 miles west of the Chapel of the Holy Cross , is very popular and busy, according to past visitors. Recent travelers described the hike up as strenuous – in some places difficult, as you have to scramble over some rocks on an incline. But once you get to the top, the views are spectacular. (Just don't expect solitude once you arrive.) Make sure you wear proper hiking boots as the sandstone and loose rocks can get slippery at times. Reviewers say it will take about an hour to get to the top of Cathedral Rock. According to travelers, it's a great place to take photos of the surrounding red rocks – even amateur photographers will not be disappointed.

As there is no shade along the trail, the best time to hike Cathedral Rock is in the spring or fall when the area experiences mild temperatures in the mid-60s and 70s. During the summer, it's not uncommon to see triple-digit temperatures, so a hike during this season is not advised. No matter when you hike, bring lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Parking is extremely limited at the trailhead; the best way to access the trail is by taking the Sedona Shuttle , which departs from two free park and ride lots. The shuttle is a free, easy and eco-friendly way to explore some of Sedona's favorite trails. Visitors who want to access Cathedral Rock can hop on the shuttle at the North State Route 179 park and ride lot. There is no parking in the residential areas. Shuttles run Thursday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you make use of the shuttle, you also won't have to purchase the Red Rock Pass required for parking at the trailhead, which costs $5 per vehicle. For more information about Cathedral Rock, visit the U.S. Forest Service website .

We’ll pass under towering rock formations and travel over vast areas of exposed rock as we hike around the west side of Cathedral Rock and down to the clear, spring-fed waters of Oak Creek. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot with sweeping views of the surounding rock formations.

Touring Sedona: Cathedral Rock, Devil’s Bridge, Pink Jeeps, vortexes and more

Touring Sedona, Arizona

Hiking the Little Horse Trail to Chicken Point near Sedona, Arizona.

  • Susan Glaser, cleveland.com

SEDONA, Arizona – The sky was cerulean blue, the rock sienna red.

My face was pretty red too, having just climbed 700 feet nearly straight up.

But my, oh my, what a view.

This particular view was atop Cathedral Rock, a stunning sandstone formation filled with spires and towers just south of Sedona. But there were views just like this all around – atop Chicken Point, Submarine Rock and Devil’s Bridge, among other locations. And those are just the ones I had time for, during a too-quick, two-day visit last month.

There’s a reason that tourism to Sedona has exploded in recent years. The place is drop-dead gorgeous.

The best views are on two feet, on any of the more than 400 miles of hiking trails that snake their way through red rock country. But even nonhikers will find much to marvel here, along the winding roads, at scenic overlooks – even from the downtown shops and restaurants.

During a quick lunch on our second day in town, I commented to my husband, “Even the fast-food restaurants come with amazing views.”

Among our activities: We took a Pink Jeep Tour through the park, drove along spectacular Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive, took a peek inside the gorgeous Chapel of the Holy Cross and saw a stunning sunset atop Airport Mesa.

The best, though, was the hiking, to and through some Seussian rock formations.

The town of Sedona, population 10,000, is surrounded by public land, although this is not a national park. Rather, most of the region is part of Coconino National Forest, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which stretches across nearly 2 million acres north of Flagstaff to south of Sedona.

Tourism to the region has tripled in recent years, which can make the roadways and parking areas extremely congested, although the crowds weren’t bad during my visit in early March.

In addition to its tremendous appeal among outdoor enthusiasts, Sedona has also become a mecca for the New Age movement, drawing visitors who seek what they believe is powerful and healing energy emanating from the red rocks.

Randy Michael, a long-time guide with Pink Jeep Tours, is a New Age skeptic, but he does believe in the power of the region’s beauty. “I feel Sedona is a healing place. That’s an honest answer,” he said in response to a question about Sedona’s metaphysical side.

Indeed, the physical side here was plenty enough for me. Here then, how I spent two days in Sedona:

Exploring on two feet

We drove north about two hours from Phoenix and went immediately to our first hike, a gorgeous, moderate trail that took us to Chicken Point, a massive, rounded rock that offers terrific, 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape, but which also functions as a bit of a wind tunnel -- so hold onto your hat.

The red rocks of Sedona are made of something called Schnebly Hill Sandstone, named after the founder of the town, Carlton Schnebly. They get their color from the abundance of iron in their composition.

This is a popular spot for not only hikers, but off-road 4x4 vehicles and mountain bikers, who were scaling and descending the sandstone as we arrived. We witnessed one biker wipe out as he lost control on his descent. Ouch.

After our hike, we took a peek inside the stunning Chapel of the Holy Cross, built into the sandstone in 1954, conceived by artist Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a former student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

It was mid-afternoon at this point – enough time for one more trail. So we headed to the Cathedral Rock area, which is often listed as the most popular hike in the region.

Parking here, and everywhere in Sedona, can be a challenge. Indeed, a traffic officer was restricting cars onto Back O’Beyond Road as we arrived, but motioned us through, as a single spot had just opened up.

There are a few different ways to reach Cathedral Rock, a rock formation that is one of the most photographed areas of the park. We chose the most direct – via a short, strenuous trail that pretty much maneuvers straight up the rockface. I was on all fours for part of it, both going up and coming down, trying to lower my center of gravity to prevent slipping.

But what a payoff.

A couple was getting engaged when we arrived at the top. Another group was celebrating with a picnic (how they carried the food up, I have no idea). I sat for a while, resting and marveling at Mother Nature’s handiwork.

A mountain biker en route to Devil's Bridge in Sedona, Arizona.

Our third hike, the next morning, was to Devil’s Bridge, also one of the most popular hikes in the area. (“Don’t let its name fool you,” says a Forest Service description. “It’s one of the most heavenly sights in an area famous for them.”)

We got there early, at about 8 a.m. – after a carb stop at Sedonuts – to discover the parking lot was under construction and closed. We parked along the side of the road, which was already lined with cars. As we hiked in, we encountered people on their way out – they had been here for sunrise, which was a bit too ambitious for me.

The payoff on this hike is a 54-foot-high natural bridge, a beautiful formation amid a vast landscape of beautiful formations.

In the Instagram age, it’s become very popular to have your photo taken posing atop the bridge. By the time we got there, the line to walk out on the arch was an estimated hour wait. I decided to forego the photo.

“It’s not because I’m afraid to walk across it,” I told my husband, although I’m not sure he believed me.

Exploring on four wheels

After our Devil’s Bridge hike, we gave our feet a rest, hopped in the car and headed north along Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive, aka Arizona Route 89A, which meanders 27 eye-popping miles to Flagstaff. The drive offers towering cliffs on either side, crystal clear Oak Creek at its base and hairpin turns along the way. We turned around at the halfway point, Oak Creek Canyon Vista Point, after climbing about 1,000 feet via a series of dramatic switchbacks.

It was blowing and snowing at the top, so we cut short our viewing time, briefly perused the market of Native American vendors selling jewelry and artwork, then headed back south to Sedona, where we were booked on a 3 p.m. Pink Jeep Tour.

There are numerous 4x4 tours in the area, but Pink Jeep started it all in 1960, when real estate agent Don Pratt took clients to see property in his World War II surplus vehicle. “Before he knew it, he was taking people for Jeep rides,” said guide Randy Michael. He bought another vehicle and another.

A trip to the pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu gave Pratt and his wife, Elsie, another idea. “They saw the brilliance in the marketing of that color,” said Michael. “They came back and painted all of their Jeeps pink.” In the decades since, the company has expanded to the Smoky Mountains, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and, new this year, Branson, Missouri.

Pink Jeep and other companies offer a variety of tours – from mild to wild, exploring both the geologic and human history of the region.

We opted for the Broken Arrow tour – “a slow motion roller coaster ride,” according to Michael – which follows an old ranch road through the landscape. It was great fun, traversing up, down and over giant rocks.

Michael provided excellent, entertaining commentary along the way, informing us about the region’s prolific movie-making history (“they used to call us Little Hollywood”) and the meaning of the name Sedona. It was town founder Carlton Schnedley’s wife’s first name. “It has no meaning,” said Michael. “It is not a Native American term. It is made up.”

He also provided a local’s perspective on the region’s reputation as a mecca for the New Age movement. He credited its inception to the late Page Bryant, a psychic and author who identified several locations in the area as powerful energy centers, which she called vortexes.

“It’s a brilliant business model – create an idea that no one can prove or disprove. And then sell a lot of books,” said Michael.

The movement changed Sedona, its main streets now lined with shops including Crystal Magic, Psychic Readings and Mystical Bazaar. Most of the tour companies – including Pink Jeep – offer vortex tours, which take riders to some of the most powerful energy centers.

“I take them to the sites and let them feel what they feel,” said Michael. “If you come here looking for it, I think it’s likely you’ll find it.”

I spent two nights at Sky Ranch Lodge, located atop Airport Mesa, reportedly one of the region’s most powerful vortexes. I didn’t get a metaphysical charge from the place, although I did appreciate the hot tub after a day of hiking.

Cathedral Rock, too, is another one of the region’s major energy sources. I can’t say that the hike to the top of the rock gave me great energy – if anything, it depleted me of some, as I ran out of water in my struggle to reach the top.

But wow, oh wow, what a view.

If you go: Sedona, Arizona

When: Thanks to its 4,350-foot elevation, the climate in Sedona is more varied than in Phoenix, about 120 miles south. It does snow here in the winter, when overnight lows dip into the 30s. Summer highs frequently hit the 90s, making spring and fall the peak seasons to visit.

Getting there: Most visitors fly into Phoenix, although Flagstaff Airport is closer and served by United and American airlines. Visitors frequently pair a trip to Sedona with the Grand Canyon, two hours north.

Where we stayed: There are lots of places to overnight in Sedona, almost all of them pricey. We opted for two nights at the Sky Ranch Lodge , located on Airport Mesa, centrally located between Uptown Sedona and West Sedona, the two commercial districts in town. It’s a beautiful property, with views of the red rocks a short walk from our room. We paid roughly $350 per night.

Where to eat: Our first night in town, we ate steak and prickly pear cactus fries at the Cowboy Club Grille , a long-time Sedona classic, where John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and other Hollywood stars dined decades ago, when it was the Oak Creek Tavern. On the second night, we walked to Mesa Grill Sedona , atop Airport Mesa, for Southwestern fare and beautiful views. Also: Wildflower for lunch and Sedonuts for breakfast.

Pink Jeep Tour : The two-hour Broken Arrow tour is $147 per adult, $137 for ages 2-12; pricey, but worth it.

Hike parking: Some national forest parking areas require a parking pass; we picked one up upon arrival -- $15 for a week or $5 per day.

Who we are....

We are a mother son outfit and locals to the Sedona area since 1973(mom)

We know the area probably better than most, and can send you on a trip of a lifetime. All of our guides have been avid hikers and bikers of this area and can show you some pretty incredible spots that most other companies don't even know exist.

Question: Can you ride on the hiking trails?

Answer: No you cannot ride on trails only jeep trails maintained by the county and roadways that are for motorized traffic..

Question; How old do you have to be?

Answer; 14+ is our policy. our trails down here are a little more advanced for kids any younger than 14.

Question; Do you include hydration or helmets, locks with packages?

Answer; We include 1 bottle of water, a high quality safety helmet, and appropriate locks on each rental.

QUESTION: Are we allowed anywhere in the Coconino Natl Forest or where mt bikers ride?

ANSWER: Absolutely not. E bikes are not intended to go off road on mountain bike trails. Our E-bikes are heavier and more powerful than a regular Mountain bike and could cause potential harm if they come in contact with people, dogs or other bikers.

We are advocates of the forest and if any of our guests venture into the forest they could be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law..

Sedona & Red Rock State Park Self-Guided Driving Tour

See Tour Details »

Self-Guided Driving Tour

The following are loosely listed in order of how you might encounter them on a driving tour of Sedona, starting in the Village of Oak Creek off Hwy 179 and continuing to the “Y” at Hwy 89A, heading west and then doubling back along Hwy 179 toward Uptown Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon along Hwy 89A. Many include easy to advanced hiking in order to reach the best viewpoints, but several can be viewed from a parking lot or on the side of the road. (Be careful parking roadside… traffic in Sedona can be very busy!)

Important: Don’t forget to start at the Coconino National Forest South Gateway Visitors Center at 8375 State Route 179, or the visitors center in Uptown Sedona, to purchase your Red Rock Pass parking permit.

You can start this self-guided tour at any of the points below and simply go back to the top of the list and work your way down. Since most Sedona visitors begin their visit by entering the area from the south, (from Phoenix, off I-17) we’re starting our list there.

  • From the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, where you can pull into the Coconino National Forest parking lot for the Bell Rock Pathway to view Bell Rock and Cathedral Butte. This turnoff on the east side of the road is about 1.1 miles north of the National Forest’s South Gateway Visitors Center.
  • Return to Highway 179 and head north 2.8 miles to Back O’ Beyond Road, turning west off the Highway and see spectacular Cathedral Rock.
  • Return to Highway 179 and continue north 0.5 miles to Chapel Road, then 0.8 miles east on Chapel Road up the hill to the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross.
  • Continue on Highway 179 and go to the “Y” at the junction of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. You’re now in Uptown Sedona.
  • From Highway 179, take Schnebly Hill Road. This 38-mile winding and picturesque route ultimately ends at an intersection with Interstate 17. You may choose to go the entire way or turn around and head back down to Highway 179 – it’s up to you. (If you do go all the way up to Interstate 17 and want to come down a different way, you can either go south 38 miles to exit 298 and come back up to Sedona through the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179, or head north on the 17 and come down Oak Creek Canyon 27 miles on Highway 89A.)
  • Back at the divergence of Highway 179 and Schnebly Hill Road, continue around the world-famous Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Shopping District and follow to the “Y” – a traffic circle at the intersection of Highway 179 and Highway 89A. An exit to the right of the Y will take you to Uptown Sedona, where you’ll find shops, hotels, galleries and restaurants with public free parking lots and on-street parking. Best to get out and stroll a while here… there’s too much to see from your car windows!
  • Leave Uptown and head west on Highway 89A 1.1 mile, turning south on Airport Road (keep your eyes out… there is no traffic light here). A short, steep climb up the hill to Airport Mesa, home of one of Sedona’s vortex spots and perhaps the most popular scenic viewpoint at sunrise and sunset.
  • Return to Highway 89A and head through West Sedona where you’ll find more shops, dining, hotels and galleries. From Airport Road, travel 2 miles west to Dry Creek Road at which you make a right and head north up Boynton Canyon. Boynton Canyon is one of the most scenic of the box canyons that make Arizona Red Rock Country so famous. Boynton Canyon is also home to the renowned Enchantment Resort.
  • Back out on Highway 89A to the west 1.1 miles is Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Red Rock Loop, aptly named, creates a complete loop that passes through Red Rock State Park, one of Sedona’s most popular hiking, picnicking and photography spots. From here, many iconic photos of the view from Red Rock Crossing to Cathedral Rock have been taken.
  • Complete the loop on Lower Red Rock Loop and return to Highway 89A. From here, your trip doubles back 5.5 miles toward Uptown Sedona, and continues up Oak Creek Canyon. You’ll pass Midgley Bridge and Indian Gardens, both great places to stop and take photos. (If traveling north to south, you’ll enter Uptown Sedona about 7.1 miles from Slide Rock.)
  • Just 7.1 miles from Uptown Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon’s most popular attraction, Slide Rock State Park. With easy walking trails, wading in the creek and a natural waterslide, this park is open year-round but is most popular (read: crowded) in the summer months with visitors and families looking for some cool, natural water play. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 2.8 miles from West Fork.)
  • Another 2.8 miles up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A will take you to the trailhead for the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon Trail, an easy 3-mile and extremely popular day hike. (If traveling north to south, look for West Fork about 6 miles from the Oak Creek Vista.)
  • Nearly 6 miles of winding switchbacks up Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A is the Oak Creek Canyon Vista. Look for a well-marked and ample parking lot on the east side of the highway. Don’t miss this opportunity to stretch your legs and view Oak Creek Canyon from its apex as it runs south. Breathtaking year-round, it’s a sight to behold in winter, fall, summer or spring. (If returning from I-17 in the north, the turnoff is about 8.3 miles down the canyon.)
  • From here, you can either turn around and head back down Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A south or continue 6.4 miles to the junction of Highway 89A and I-17. If you continue north toward Flagstaff and the I-17, you can either take I-17 south to Schnebly Hill Road or the full 38 miles to exit 298 and return to your starting point in the Village of Oak Creek.

Nordic Choir embarks on music tour of Norway

May 17, 2024

DECORAH, IOWA—Luther College Nordic Choir will tour Norway May 20 through June 3. The tour will celebrate the choir and Luther’s Norwegian roots, as Luther was the first college in the U.S. founded by Norwegian immigrants. With 2025 also marking the 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to the U.S., Nordic Choir will perform musical selections celebrating homecoming on the tour.

On the tour, students will perform at churches and concert halls throughout Norway. This includes historic villages and cities like Lillehammer, Stravanger and Kristiansand. The choir will also participate in a church service at the Bergen Cathedral. The choir will finish their tour with a performance in Oslo at Uranienborg Kirke, a church located behind the Royal Palace.

A group of college students in blue choir robes posing for a photo.

Nordic Choir will travel through Norway May 20–June 3.

“Nordic Choir has a long history of impactful music opportunities through its international touring,” said Andrew Last , director of Nordic Choir. “This year, Nordic celebrates the college’s Norwegian heritage through a tour program that includes themes of ‘coming home’ and ‘flight.’ The program will also commemorate the wonderful Norwegian voices through folk song, choral legends and F. Melius Christiansen, the founder of our Lutheran choral heritage.”

Fifty-nine Luther alumni, friends and parents will tour Norway along with the choir by attending performances and taking in scenery and architecture of the country.

Nordic Choir is Luther’s principal touring choir in a choral program that includes three upper-class touring choirs and two first-year choirs. Nordic Choir honors the Lutheran choral tradition while exploring new and innovative choral works that span styles and genres. Performances have been described as “thrilling,” “breathtaking” and “rock-solid in intonation and rhythmic clarity.” Every three years, Nordic Choir tours internationally and tours nationally every year. This past winter, the choir toured the Upper Midwest.

The Luther College Nordic Choir was founded by Sigvart Steen and memorably conducted for 57 years by Weston Noble, class of 1943. Previous conductors include Craig Arnold and Allen Hightower. Since 2017, the choir has been under the direction of Last, associate professor of music and director of choral activities and graduate of the class of 1997. He earned a master’s degree in choral conducting from Northern Arizona University and a doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Music.

About Luther College Music

Luther is home to one of the largest undergraduate music programs in the nation, with five choirs, three orchestras, two bands and two jazz bands. One-third of all Luther students participate in music, including large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. Nearly 175 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance. Learn more at luther.edu/music .

Beatles tribute concert at cathedral triggers audience walkout over “wall of noise”

Attendees said that the “deafening” acoustics meant the songs were indistinguishable from one another

A group shot of the Beatles in 1963

A “wall of noise” at a recent Beatles tribute concert led to concertgoers walking out of the venue, according to new reports.

  • READ MORE: ‘Let It Be’ review: The Beatles dust off their spellbinding 1970 break-up doc

The gig took place at the 1,000-year-old Winchester Cathedral, and saw numerous attendees leave the event early due to the “deafening acoustics” at the venue.

Hundreds of people were in attendance to see the “ultimate tribute” to the iconic rock veterans, but reports later emerged that the choice of venue led to a “wall of sound” being created, and the songs becoming indistinguishable from one another.

According to a report from GB News , tickets to the event were around £40 per person, and numerous attendees claimed they couldn’t tell which song was playing at the Beatles by Candlelight concert.

“We had been looking forward to it for weeks, we were really excited. We thought it would be a really nice evening, but no,” one concertgoer told The Telegraph about the experience. “The noise level was unbelievable. You could not understand which track they were playing until there were a few breaks in it … my ears were ringing,” they added.

“I’m not sure whether it was the acoustics of the cathedral. I don’t think the band could have been that bad. I feel for them.”

The outlet also shared that while some left early, just a “handful of people” returned following the interval.

A spokesman for the cathedral has also spoken out on the show, and explained that they are both “disappointed” with how the night went down, and are working “to understand what went wrong”.

GB News also highlighted that John Blake, the commercial director of Winchester Cathedral, shared a statement too. “We are very disappointed that the quality of the concert that we hosted on Saturday fell short of the cathedral’s and our guests’ expectations,” it read.

“There were some areas of the cathedral where the acoustics and sound levels were not satisfactory. We recognise this and are working with the Beatles by Candlelight production company and our sound engineers to understand what went wrong and to ensure this does not happen in the future.

“We are corresponding with everyone who has given us feedback and are grateful for their patience and understanding. We are doing our utmost to make this right.”

In other Beatles news, earlier this week Ringo Starr made headlines after revealing his thoughts that The Beatles wouldn’t have made as many records, had it not been for his “workaholic” bandmate, Paul McCartney .
