I would say about 2km. It's a walk along the portside, pavement all the way. I wouldn't say it's unpleasant, but it gets better as you get closer to the centre and the old port.

Taking a cab may be a better way to spend your time if it is limited.

corfu cruise port to town

If you do not have luggage it is an easy walk around 10/15 mins so no need for a taxi. You can short cut into the Old Town from the side turnings before you meet the Liston. Is there anywhere in particular you wish to access or just the centre.

You don’t need a destination in mind. Instead, you can wander the maze of cobblestone streets amongst the tall Venetian buildings of the old town of Corfu.

However, if you are looking for beautiful and historically significant spots, there are plenty to choose from. Don’t miss the Church of Saint Spyridon. Named for Corfu’s patron saint, the church is one of the island’s most popular attractions.

Next, be sure to swing by Spianada Square. Admire the grandeur of this massive central plaza set on the Corfu sea wall in the shadow of the Old Corfu Fortress.

Finally, round out your experience in the Corfu Old Town with a cold beer, local wine, or cocktail at one of Corfu Old Town’s best bars.

Discover The Achilleion Palace

History buffs won’t want to miss the impressive Achilleon Palace. This magnificent example of neoclassical architecture is just 25 minutes south of the old town.

Built in the late 19th century as a summer retreat for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who fell in love with the island.

Corfu's Achilleon Palace

Built with an admiration for Greek mythology, the palace is named for Achilles and features many paintings and sculptures reflecting that. Most impressive is the statue of Achilles that stands guard in the palace’s gardens.

Designed by Italian architect Raffaele Caritto, the palace features a blend of architectural styles, primarily influenced by the neoclassical and Pompeian styles. Adorned with grand columns, statues, and intricate details, the palace is an impressive sight.

Inside is equally impressive, with lavish decorations, marble sculptures, beautiful frescoes, and ornate furnishings.

One of the palace’s most impressive features is its stunning gardens, which offer breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea. While this area contains seven Ionian Islands, Corfu Island is the northernmost.

The meticulously landscaped gardens are adorned with statues, fountains, and vibrant flowers. The grounds provide ample space for visitors to stroll, relax, and admire the beauty of the palace and its surroundings.

Inside Achilleon Palace

The palace also offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s storied past. After Empress Elisabeth’s assassination in 1898, the palace changed hands several times.

It was later acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany in 1907, who used it as a summer residence.

During World War I, the palace served as a military hospital and headquarters. After the war, it became the property of the Greek state, which preserved it as a historical monument and popular tourist attraction.

Enjoy Corfu’s Renowned Cuisine

One of the best things to do before you depart Corfu is to sample some of the island’s delicious and unique cuisine.

The best way to get to know a culture is through its food, and the best way to sample Corfu’s legendary cuisine is at one of the many traditional tavernas found within the old town and around the island.

Corfu’s proximity to Italy has resulted in a variety of Italian-inspired dishes. You can sample dishes such as sofrito fried veal, served with a white sauce, and pastitsada, a casserole dish with veal and pasta.

Kleftiko, a traditional Greek dish cooked in parchment paper

Kleftiko is another favorite on the island. Imagine lamb bundled in parchment paper with potatoes, onion, peppers, local cheese, wine, herbs, and mustard and slow-cooked in a clay pot. Delicious!

Of course, as with all the Greek islands, seafood is popular, with fresh fish, octopus, squid, and shrimp appearing on almost every menu. Finally, remember to sample the island’s local cheeses, wines, and kumquats, for which the island is famous.

1. Corfu Old Town

Corfu’s UNESCO-listed old town is best visited on a guided walking tour as the town itself is centuries-old with lots of cobblestones and historic narrow streets. The old town is sandwiched between the New Fortress on the western edge of the city and the Old Fortress at its eastern end. The top attractions include:

  • Spianada Square (The Esplanade) – This vast, green city park lies between the streets of the Old Town and the Old Fortress. Spianada is the largest square in Greece and claims to be the second-largest in Europe. Constructed by the French in the 19th century, the Esplanade is both a local and tourist hotspot, surrounded by cafes ideal for people-watching. Here, you’ll find statues, monuments, a large parking lot and Corfu Cricket Pitch, where you can see locals playing cricket, a game passed down to them by the British during the British occupation of Corfu (1814-1864). Check out Spianada Square tours and activities
  • Corfu Town Hall – Located on Dimarchiou Square (Platia Dimarchiou), the imposing Town Hall building was built between 1663 and 1693 and represents one of the finest examples of Venetian architecture on the island. Constructed primarily in marble and stone, the fascinating building was initially used as a club for the noblemen. In 1720, the building hosted the Noble Theatre of Saint Giacomo of Corfu, the first Greek opera house. In 1903, it was turned into a Town Hall.
  • Saint Spyridon Church – This Greek Orthodox church is the most important religious monument in Corfu dedicated to St Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. It was built in the 16th century and houses the relics of Saint Spyridon, kept in an ornate sarcophagus inside the church. The Church of Saint Spyridon is known for its red-domed bell tower, the highest bell tower in the Ionian Islands.
  • Liston – The name “Liston” refers to the pedestrian street and neighborhood on the western edge of Spianada Square. It was constructed during the French domination in the Ionian Islands (1807–1814) and imitates Rue de Rivoli in central Paris. This place is packed with trendy cafes and overlooks the vast Spianada Square.
  • Church of Saints Jacob and Christopher – This historic cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu, Zakynthos and Cephalonia. It is located at Dimarchiou Square and is known for its valuable art collection.
  • Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank – Housed on the first floor of an elegant historic building, this interesting museum displays a collection of Greek paper money and coins spanning 180 years of history.
  • Corfu Museum of Asian Art – Founded in 1928 as the Museum of Sino-Japanese Art, this stunning museum contains 15,000 works of Asian art from private collections and individual item donations. The museum is housed in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, originally used as the residence of Britain’s High Commissioner and later by the Greek Royal family.
  • Casa Parlante Museum – Housed in a 19th-century historic mansion, Casa Parlante is a unique history museum that features animatronic figures that recreate the everyday life of the island’s 19th-century nobility.
  • Old Port – Only 500 m north of the Old Town, you can walk along the Old Port of Corfu and admire the picturesque harbour and the view of the New Venetian Fortress.
  • Archaeological Museum of Corfu – Only a 10-minute walk south of Spianada Square, a little bit outside the old town area, the archaeological museum showcases fantastic collections tracing the island’s history from the Paleolithic area to Roman times.

2. Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio)

Built by the Venetians in the second half of the 16th century, the imposing fortress was built on the site of an ancient Byzantine fortification and lies on a small, rocky peninsula east of the old town. It is accessed via the Contrafossa moat bridge across from Spianada Square and overlooks the picturesque Mandraki Marina and the turquoise Strait of Corfu.

Inside the Old Fortress, you can visit several points of interest including the Byzantine art collection, the Holy Church of St. George, the Venetian Prison, and British Gunpowder Depots. There is a lighthouse at the highest point of the promontory, offering unmatched views of the town and Albania across the strait.

4. The Achilleion Palace

Tucked in the village of Gastouri, 10 km/6 miles (a 20-minute drive) south of the port of Corfu, the lavish Achilleion Palace was built in the second half of the 19th century for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi. The palace served as the Empress’ summer refuge after the tragic death of her only son Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria in 1889.

The magnificent mansion was built in a neoclassical style inspired by the motives of the Greek mythical hero Achilles whom Sisi admired. Set on top of the hill overlooking the sea, in a landscape filled with olive groves and lush vegetation, the palace boasts beautiful gardens and currently operates as a museum. For information about the price and opening hours, check the official webpage https://achillion-corfu.gr/

5. Mon Repos

Mon Repos is a villa nestled in the forest of Palaeopolis, south of Corfu Town and approximately a 10-minute drive southeast of Corfu cruise port. The neoclassical mansion dates from the 19th century and was built as a summer residence for the British Lord High Commissioner Frederick Adam, and his second wife, Diamantina “Nina” Palatino.

Throughout history, it housed the School of Fine Arts and was a place of residence for multiple important historical personalities, such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the Greek Royal family, and others. Nowadays, the mansion houses the museum and a wonderful park surrounding the villa is open to the public.

6. Church of the Holy Apostles Jason and Sosipater

The oldest Greek Orthodox church on Corfu is dedicated to two saints, Jason and Sosipater, who were the first to teach Christianity to the inhabitants of the island in the 1st century AD. This beautiful church is located in the Garitsa neighborhood, near the archeological site of Paleopolis, a 10-minute drive southeast of the Corfu cruise terminal. The church was built in the 11th century on the site of an ancient temple and boasts unique Byzantine architecture with a decorated interior and valuable artworks.

7. Kanoni and the Mouse Island

Kanoni is a small peninsula located around 4 km/2.5 miles (less than a 10-minute drive) south of Corfu Town, renowned for the iconic Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna and Pontikonissi islet, which literally means the “Mouse Island”. The Corfu Airport occupies the western part of Kanoni, while the south and east feature a few small beaches.

The 17th-century Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna is the symbol of Kanoni, built on a small islet south of the Kanoni peninsula accessed via a stone pier (this little islet is not to be mixed with the Mouse Island which is bigger and located just behind it). From the church, there are daily boat departures to the tiny Pontikonissi island and it takes only a 5-minute boat ride to reach it. Due to its small size, this lush, green island is known as the “Mouse Island” and the only landmark you can visit here is a small Byzantine chapel dating from the 13th century.

This scenic area can be best admired from two cafeterias located on top of the hill overlooking Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island. You will also frequently see airplanes landing and taking off, as the airport lies only a few km from there.

It is a mile or so from the Cruise terminal to Corfu Town. Level walking, with sidewalk all the way. Sidewalk is a little rough in places, but not a big problem. Just exit the port and turn left. Keep the water to your left until you reach Corfu Town.

There is also a public bus running back & forth.

Keith1010

I would try to plan something there. There is not a whole lot to see in the town.

We were in Corfu last year.....took the ship's shuttle service into town. Then we wandered on our own. It's a lovely town. We enjoyed it. You can definitely do it on your own.

Thanks everyone im trying to figure out diy's for our ports because rci excurions are expensive

One idea for Corfu is to simply rent a car and drive yourself around the island (or part of the island). There are several rental car companies that have cars right at the port and the prices can be quite inexpensive. On our last visit we paid less then 50 Euros for a car and had a great day exploring the island. With 4 in a car this means a full day tour of the island would be less then 20 Euros per person (have to buy gas). We also had no problem finding free parking in Corfu Town where we spent some time later in the day. Driving on Corfu is quite easy as there is very little traffic outside of Corfu Town.

Just came back from Ruby Princess Greek Isles cruise. For Corfu, we spent a few hours in the Old Town area which is around 1.5 to 2.0 miles from the port.

No shuttle was offered by Princess but there was a No. 16 city bus that run frequently from inside the port to the edge of Old Town (next to the new fortress) for 1.5 Euro each way. We used it to save the walking for around town instead.

We're going on the Ruby P in three weeks. Do you have any observations/advice for us?

We plan on renting a car from Sunshine which is right across from the cruise terminal. I think it is around $75. We are touring the island than returning to old town.

If you are interested in seeing Corfu's old town area, take the No. 16 bus from the port non-stop into town for 1.5 Euro. Wander the narrow streets of old town; a look at the Church of St. Spyridon - has the tallest tower in town; head east to walk around Corfu's large and beautiful main square - the Esplanade, which is right next to the Old Fortress.

If you are interested in seeing the famous Achilleion Palace, there is a No. 10 bus that run from the old town directly to the Palace. For bus stop information, ask for a detail street and bus route map from the driver of the No. 16 bus. Make sure you have plenty of time, as the No. 10 bus only operates hourly.

Hope you have a nice cruise on the Ruby Princess, we certainly did.

Great to hear. We are counting down the days til we leave. Thanks,

Although it is only a short walk from the ship, the day we done it the weather was clear sky and temps into the 80's. By the time we arrived my wife was really tired and we just ambled around before returning to the boat very tired but having not really done anything. This was a big disappointment for me as I had seen Corfu back in the eighties and remembered it being a beautiful Island.

We are returning there again this year and I am organising a private tour of the island. It's a shame to go to such a place and not get to see the "real thing".

Get ready for sun-kissed bliss – Corfu boasts a whopping 73 beaches! Let’s dive into a few of the best options for a relaxing beach day:

1. Dassia Beach (DIY Sweat Index: 😅😅 Straightforward)

Located 12 km from Corfu Town, Dassia Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island – your perfect escape from the cruise port! 3. Paleokastritsa Beach (DIY Sweat Index: 😅😅😅 Takes Effort)

Calling all beach aficionados! Paleokastritsa boasts some of Corfu’s most stunning scenery, with crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves begging to be explored. No wonder it’s consistently rated the island’s top beach!

While in Paleokastritsa, don’t miss the 13th-century Byzantine Monastery perched on a clifftop above the main beach. It offers breathtaking panoramic views!

How to get there from Corfu Cruise Port:

  • Take the intercity Green Buses A9 service from their terminal located a 15-minute walk from San Rocco Square (where Bus #15 from the cruise port drops you). It’s an air-conditioned coach with free WiFi!

Unforgettable Things to Do from Corfu Cruise Port

Corfu offers a captivating mix of beaches, history, and stunning scenery. While it’s tempting to spend your entire port day soaking up the sun, these unforgettable experiences might just lure you away from that sun lounger!

1. Immerse Yourself in Corfu Town’s Old World Charm

Step back in time as you wander the labyrinthine streets of Corfu’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating blend of Venetian, French, and British influences creates a unique architectural tapestry.

Start your exploration in the heart of the Old Town, the Spianada (Esplanade). This vast, elegant square is one of the largest in Europe, bordered by leafy arcades and bustling cafes. During the British era, it served as a cricket pitch – a quirky tradition that continues to this day!

From the Esplanade, stroll along the graceful Liston . This Parisian-style arcade, built during the French occupation, is lined with chic cafes and shops. Sip a coffee and soak in the timeless atmosphere, imagining a bygone era of elegant promenades. While exploring, try pastitsada , the iconic Corfu dish with tender meat in a rich tomato sauce served over thick pasta.

As you venture further, lose yourself in the Old Town’s maze of narrow streets. Admire the Venetian-era buildings with their pastel hues and wrought-iron balconies, discovering hidden gems like tiny churches and charming courtyards.

How to get there: Catch Bus #15 from Corfu cruise port to San Rocco Square. From there, The Esplanade is an easy 10 minute walk away.

DIY Walking Tour Tip : Use Discover Greece’s free audio tour for a self-paced walk around Corfu’s Old Town.

Picture yourself a Venetian soldier at the Old Fortress , standing bravely on its ramparts with the sea breeze in your hair. The views from up here are absolutely epic – the terracotta rooftops of Corfu Town, the sparkling sea, and even Albania in the distance!

This place has stood the test of time. It was built way back in the 15th century by the Venetians to protect the island from invaders. Can you imagine the battles fought here? Definitely worth exploring the tunnels and the little church, which looks like it’s straight out of Ancient Greece. Tickets are €3 – worth it for the views alone, let alone the history!

How to get there: Keep walking from the Esplanade!

Get ready to explore! The New Fortress is a maze of stone tunnels, secret passageways, and towering lookout points. It was built by the Venetians (those guys were big on fortresses!) and then the British added their own touches. Imagine yourself as a soldier, keeping watch from the ramparts!

The views of Corfu Town, the Old Fortress, and the sea are absolutely breathtaking. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the hidden tunnel that leads down to the water – total Indiana Jones vibes! Tickets are €6. This is on the way to the Corfu cruise port, so you may want to make this the last attraction you visit! The closest bus stop for #15 back to the port is at stop “ Ika “.

Mon Repos Park isn’t just a beautiful garden! This former summer palace, built by a British governor in the 1800s, became a royal residence and even saw the birth of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Stroll through shaded pathways, uncover hidden archaeological gems, and imagine the footsteps of royalty. It’s the perfect place to unwind from the city and discover a different side of Corfu.

How to get there: From San Rocco Square, catch Bus #2A to stop “ Mon Repos “. The entrance is next to the bus stop. Buses operate every 30 minutes during summer. Entrance to the Museum is €2 but you can walk around the estate for free.

Escape to the enchanting Achilleion Palace , built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria (also known as Sisi). This hilltop retreat, inspired by the mythical hero Achilles, boasts breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea. Wander through opulent rooms filled with stunning artwork and step into the lush gardens adorned with statues of Greek gods.

Even on a short day trip from your cruise, the Achilleion Palace is worth the journey. Its blend of neoclassical architecture, whimsical gardens, and captivating history offers a unique glimpse into Corfu’s past. Plus, those views will take your breath away! Not sure? Check out the virtual tour first!

How to get there: Achilleion Palace is 10km south west of Corfu Old Town. Catch bus #10 from Psychiatriou Square, 1 minute walk from San Rocco Square. Bus stops at the entrance to Achilleion Palace.

Kerkyra Corfu Cruise Port

Greece 0 Comments 2179 Views

Corfu (Kerkyra) cruise port alongside Athens (Piraeus) is one of the most significant ports of call not only in Greece but in Europe as well in terms of passenger traffic. This island located in close proximity to the West coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea, in front of the Southern Albania coast is just 40 miles long and 20 miles wide. And yet its comparatively moderate size does not prevent Corfu (with its Kerkyra old town) from being the main attraction of all the Mediterranean cruise itineraries .

Where Cruise Ships Dock in Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port

Annually Corfu cruise port (or Kerkyra cruise port as it is called in Greek) receives more than 450 cruise ships with over 650 000 passengers. Neo Limani (or the new port) is the place where cruise ships visiting Corfu cruise port usually dock. It is very conveniently located as you won’t need to spend much time getting to the main landmarks of Kerkyra after leaving your cruise ship. Free shuttles are available at the port and are always ready to take you to the entrance of the Corfu passenger terminal. However, it is quite reasonable to go on foot, as it takes 5-10 minutes depending on the place of your ship’s docking.

The distance from the Kerkyra cruise port entrance to the old town of Corfu is approximately 3 kilometers and can be easily covered within 20 minutes (all you need is to turn to the left from the entrance of the cruise terminal and go straight along the sea coast all the time). The bus routes you need in case you don’t want to walk are 16 or 17, both of them stop at the cruise port parking lot and cost about 2 euros. Taxi is also available, the trip costs from 10 euros and it makes sense to use it if there are 3 or 4 of you.

Where Cruise Ships Dock in Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port

Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port Hacks

There are two main bus lines in Corfu (Kerkyra) city, the blue bus line and the green bus line. It is a very convenient classification as blue line buses run inside the city of Corfu and its outskirts, whereas green line buses are intended for the Corfu (Kerkyra) suburbs. The bus line service here is very well organized and can deliver you from Kerkyra to the most significant and popular destinations such as Paleokastritsa, Kavos, Ipsos, Kassiopi, and many others). In case you are going to use buses inside the city more than 2 times during your stay at Kerkyra it makes sense to buy a single day ticket which will allow you to use the buses within this day for just 5 euros. For more information please consult https://www.astikoktelkerkyras.gr/indexeg.php

It is also very convenient to explore Corfu using popular hop-on-hop-off buses. One daily ticket allows you to visit the main city’s attractions accompanied by an 8-language audio guide without losing your precious time. The price starts from 19 euros. For more information please, consult https://city-sightseeing.com/en/44/corfu

Taxi service is also available and well-developed on Corfu Island. And yet, we recommend that you should bargain with taxi drivers as they deliberately can increase prices very often hoping for your unawareness. If you would like to use taxi service in the cruise port to get to the city center you should follow to the end of the parking lot as the first cars in the line are intended for those passengers who are willing to order long-lasting taxi tours around the city and its suburbs. You can also rent a car or a bicycle in Kerkyra as well as in its suburbs.

How to Get to Kerkyra Cruise Port from Corfu Airport

It is very convenient if Corfu (Kerkyra) cruise port is the departure or embarkation port on your itinerary as the distance between the city of Corfu and Corfu international airport amounts to not more than 5 kilometers. The fastest way to cover the distance is, of course, a taxi which costs 15-20 euros. If you want to save money you can use a bus which costs 1.5 euros (bus line No.15) which will take you from the Corfu airport to the Corfu city center (bus stop San Rocco). You can buy tickets right at the bus from the driver, but in this case, you have to pay in cash.

What to See in Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port?

Corfu (Kerkyra) old town is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage and undoubtedly deserves visiting. In fact, Kerkyra represents one of the most attractive, romantic, and amazing cities not only on the Greek Islands but all over entire Greece. It can boast an impressive number of landmarks such as museums, fortresses, monuments, and temples.

The old town of Corfu built between two fortresses (the Old and the New ones of the 15th and 19th centuries respectively) represents a unique mixture of Venetian, Sicilian, French, and British architectural styles (as these countries used to dominate this island within various periods of its history).

What to See in Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port - Old Fotress

Spianada , one of the largest and most remarkable squares in Greece located opposite the Corfu old fortress, with its elegant palace of Saint Michael and Saint George is the first that every tourist faces having entered the old town.

Achilleion Palace is located 10 kilometers from Corfu town, in the picturesque Gastouri village. The view from this location to the city is breathtaking. If you have enough time don’t hesitate to visit this amazing Corfu landmark.

Mon Repos Palace and Museum is located in the southern part of Corfu city, 2 kilometers far from the old town, in the Paleopolis forest. You can easily reach it on foot walking and enjoying the views or catch the bus route 2A departing from Spianada square every 20 minutes.

Pontikonisi or the famous Mouse Island is very well known far beyond Greece. The unusual name is directly connected with its tiny size. It is located close to the Kanoni Cape (5 kilometers south of the center of Corfu) which is crowned by the amazing Monastery Vlacherna. Kanoni Cape is the place where you can find the shortest airstrip in Europe. It is an unforgettable experience when you can almost literally touch the landing aircraft!

Shopping in Corfu

Visiting such a jewel of the Greek Islands as Kerkyra (Corfu) you will be likely to take with you a small part of it to recall your wonderful journey at home. There are numerous shops and souvenir stores in the center of Corfu ready to offer you amazing unusual products which you can not buy anywhere else. Marble carvings for your interior, olive wood kitchen items, popular nourishing olive oil soap perfectly suiting for washing face and body, stylish leather sandals, colorful ceramics, “komboloi” worry beads, “mati” the Greek eye amulet against the evil eye, tasty coffee products, dried herbs, amber-color natural honey, unique kumquat products, shaggy wool rugs, and, of course, an alcoholic drink, ouzo. But you should remember that you can take only one duty-free liter per person. Besides, according to the rules of most cruise lines, you won’t be able to drink it on board (concerning alcohol on a cruise and how to take it on board please read here).

Where to Swim in Kerkyra (Corfu) Cruise Port?

Although there is an opportunity to swim right near the Corfu (Kerkyra) cruise port still it will be better to go a little bit farther to find beautiful and well-equipped beaches such as Paleokastritsa beaches, Glyfada sandy beach with convenient entrance suiting those who travel with children, Agios Gordios, and many others. Dassia beach deserves particular attention because in addition to its turquoise clear water, the shade of trees, relaxing atmosphere, and outstanding equipment it can offer you various water activities which will fill your day spent in Corfu cruise port with unforgettable impressions! Most Corfu beaches are marked with the so-called Blue flag which confirms the outstanding clearness of their water.

Corfu Greece Port Guide

Warm Mediterranean sun and serene beaches are two main reasons why travelers come to Greece, and the island of Corfu happens to have an excess of both. Corfu cruises have risen in popularity in recent years, and luckily Corfu takes its popularity in stride. After all, Corfu’s elegant cobblestoned streets and stunning blue sea make it a quintessential stop on a Mediterranean cruise . But beyond Corfu’s charm and beauty, you’ll find unmatched history and culture.

Corfu itself means ‘peaks,’ referring to the island’s famous two hills, each featuring their own massive fortress to ward off invasion. This Ionian island is strategically located at the mouth of the Adriatic Sea, making it a critical port for trade, commerce, and maritime warfare throughout the centuries. Its rich history boasts a litany of sieges and occupations, and with that came an unforgettable mix of Venetian-style art and architecture, French design during the 17th and 18th centuries, and a classically Greek spirit all rolled into one island.

While on cruises to Corfu, Greece, explore Old Town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Leave plenty of time for attractions like Achilleon Palace, the Old Fortress, and the Corfu Museum of Asian Art — to name just a few. Take in the intermingling scents of olive trees, lemon trees, and fresh sea air. Corfu welcomes you with every winding alley, terrace, and hillside.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to corfu, theotoky winery.

Stop in for a wine tasting at one of the oldest wineries in Corfu. About a 25 minute car ride from Corfu Town, this family-owned estate produces red and white wines as well as signature olive oils. Don’t forget to make a reservation for a tour or a tasting at this busy winery. Their wine cellar is open from Tuesday to Sunday. An hour-long tour and tasting is only five euros.

French influence on Corfu is evident at the Liston. Designed during the short Napoleonic occupation of Corfu from 1807 to 1814, the multi-story houses were modelled after Paris’ most glamorous roads of the era. The Liston could best be described as a beautifully-designed esplanade, originally intended for French nobility to stroll through and connect with other high society in Corfu. Today, it’s perfect for people-watching and resting while en route to the OldFortress. While you’re there, stop in at the famous Liston Cafe for a coffee.

Old Fortress

Old Fortress is a site to behold—in fact, it’s part of the reason why Corfu successfully defendeditself against the Ottoman empire during three separate sieges, and today it’s a source of pride for locals. Learn about Corfu’s illustrious chain of occupations and handovers throughout thecenturies while admiring this formidable site.

Corfu Museum of Asian Art

Art aficionados will find no shortage of beauty in Corfu’s architecture, and as luck would have it, Corfu happens to provide the only art museum dedicated to Asian art in Greece. The museum is housed in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu. You’ll find collections inside from from China, Japan, and India—a can’t-miss tribute to collections dating as far back as the 11th century BC. Open from 8am-8pm Tuesday through Sunday.

Top Things to Do in Corfu

See achilleon palace.

South of Corfu Town and accessible by bus, take a seven mile jaunt to Achilleon Palace, a historic building in Corfu. The Achillion Palace was built during the 1890 designed to emulate themes of the hero Achilles in Greek mythology. It functioned as a summer palace for Austrian royalty. Scale the intricate staircase and look out into the palace’s garden from an ornate terrace. Take in powerful, perfect views from the terrace of Corfu unfolding before you.

Explore Old Town

Marked as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2007, Old Town contains every bit of influence from Corfu’s many occupations. The town Bazaar is a hub for shopping and cuisine, and the tightly packed roads have restaurants, taverns, and boutiques for travelers and locals alike to shop and enjoy the Venetian-inspired structures and balconies. Old Town is an essential starting-off point while you’re exploring Corfu.

Visit the Village of Paleokastritsa

Northwest of Corfu, you’ll stumble upon a village called Paleokastritsa, which is rumored to be the site where Odysseus disembarked to meet Nausicaa for the first time in The Odyssey. Paleokastritsa is nothing short of mythical. Swim, snorkel, and sunbathe at the beach. After, take a fifteen minute walk from Paleokastritsa Beach to a historic 13th century monastery which offers sweeping views of the coast.

Walk Along Sidari Beach

Corfu cruises wouldn’t be complete without plenty of beach time. Sidari Beach is everything you’ve come to expect in a Grecian breach with sandstone formations that seem impossibly crafted. To the western side of Sidari Beach, see the fjords and a famous canal called Canal d’Amour, or the Canal of Love. Swimming in the passage of the canal promises a doozy of a legend: you’ll find your soul mate.

Families, too, can enjoy an all-ages water park in Sidari, which offers far less mythical results other than good old family fun. There are also boats available to take you on daily excursions to the Diapontia islands.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Corfu Cruise Port

Be sure to try each of these traditional Greek delicacies while you’re in Corfu. Try a few traditional dishes for you to try as you travel, like gyros, souvlaki, and more. What could be better than an appetizer of bubbling, fried cheese melted in a small pan? Saganaki is served with pepper and lemon juice and eaten with bread. Don’t miss the chance to drink ouzo in Corfu. In modern Greece, ouzeries are like cafés and can be found in nearly all cities and towns, including Corfu. Ouzo is traditional aperitif. Slowly sip with appetizers like octopus or calamari.

Pane & Souvlaki

Address: 77, Gkilford, Kerkira 491 00, Greece

A budget option in Corfu Town, serving skewers of tasty meats, warm pita, and all the Corfu classics. Unfussy and simple with outdoor seating available to people-watch in Old Town.

Rosy’s Bakery

This highly-rated bakery in Corfu has many options for treats, including vegan options, on the island. Traditional baklava, sweets made with Greek yogurt and honey, and much more is available for every level of sweet tooth, plus find a few savory options like spinach and cheese pies here too.

Chrisomalis

Address: Nikiforou Theotoki 6, Kerkira 491 00, Greece

Chrisomalis has been open for 150 years in Corfu’s Old Town. Try traditional dishes in an authentic, unassuming tavern setting.

Corfu has passed through endless hands of occupation since antiquity, The island’s geography, conveniently squeezed between Greece and Italy, attracted powers and conquests from both east and west. Over time, Corfu was occupied by the Goths, Lombards, Normans, and was fought over by the kings of Sicily and the Italian city-states of Genoa and Venice. Corfu bounced around between Italy and French rule for centuries before landing under British rule during the Napoleonic era in 1815, but in 1864 Corfu and the other Ionian Islands were ceded to Greece. Italian forces held Corfu again for a brief period in the 1920s, and even today, you can visibly see the Venetian influence on Corfu’s architecture.

During World War II, the city was occupied by the Italian and Germans from 1941-1944, and many buildings and landmarks were destroyed in the process. When Greece took back control of the island in 1944, Corfu placed continued emphasis on both tourism development and preservation of the island’s landmarks. In 2007, the Old Town of Kérkyra was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
