Caribbean Weather Forecasts - 10 Days

Caribbean satellite map

Caribbean weather forecasts have average daytime temperatures ranging from the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the high 80s Fahrenheit in the summer. Some destinations during the summer reach into the 90s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius.

The dry season goes from December to May. The Caribbean hurricane season with a higher risk of rain lasts from June through November.

Caribbean Monthly Weather

Following is a summary of average Caribbean weather by month. Click on the links for average rainfall and temperatures by month for every major destination.

September Weather in the Caribbean

September weather in the Caribbean historically is the worst weather of the year. Three types of people visit the Caribbean in September :

  • People who don’t know that September is the worst weather month.
  • People who do know but take a chance anyway.
  • People who see a good 10-day weather forecast and book their hotels and flights at the last minute.

September weather is the worst of the year because it is the peak time of activity for the annual Caribbean hurricane season. Historically, the region averages four tropical storms with three becoming hurricanes and two of the three becoming major hurricanes.

The dry island of Aruba in the southern Caribbean still is the leader for the lowest risk of rain, followed closely by nearby Curaçao. Many other destinations average between six and 13 inches of rain. Cancun, Cozumel and the Central American countries get hit especially hard. Daytime temperatures for most of them average in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius.

October is the second worst month of the year for Caribbean weather thanks to the annual hurricane season. Visitors in October may hope for better weather than September, which historically has the worst. But they might not get it. October weather also is the second worst month of the hurricane season with higher than normal rainfall. The month historically averages four tropical storms.

A handful of destinations have lower risk of rain. Aruba and Curaçao historically have the lowest of any with three inches each, although these amounts are more than what both islands usually experience. Among all destinations, they have the lowest risk of rain. St. Maarten ranks third.

Places to avoid with an average of eight or more inches of rain include Belize, Cancun, Cozumel, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Grand Cayman and St. Lucia. Despite the bad historical numbers, some Caribbean cruise and resort vacationers may get lucky.

November is the final month of the Caribbean hurricane season.

It has a much lower risk of rain than September or October for many Caribbean destinations. But it’s still the third worst month of the year for rain.

Caribbean weather in November historically averages no hurricanes and only one tropical storm every other year. But rainfall is higher than average for nearly all islands in the region, especially the popular cruise ports at Barbados, Grand Cayman, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

The driest islands include Aruba, Bahamas, Curacao, Jamaica and Cuba. Temperatures stay in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit for most destinations. Cruise and resort visitors won’t have a problem staying warm.

Our second eastern Caribbean cruise in December had fantastic weather with temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit and almost no rain. But we had good luck. It was warmer and drier than usual.

Temperatures average in the mid 80s Fahrenheit during the day for most destinations. Rainfall averages about three to four inches during the month, which is slightly more than the dry season in the spring.

December is a popular month for Caribbean vacations because of better weather than the previous four to five months. People also flock here from northern destinations to get away from winter and take advantage of Christmas break from schools.

The better options for weather in December include Antigua, Aruba, Grand Cayman and the Virgin Islands because they have lower risk of rain. Cancun, Cozumel, Jamaica and San Juan are usually still a bit wet.

The Bahamas are dry but cooler because of their northern location. See more about December weather .

The Caribbean in January offers a warm escape from cold northern winters. Most major destinations have an average high temperature in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit or high 20s Celsius. Low rainfall is common because the region is starting the annual dry season.

Yes, daytime temperatures are usually warm for most destinations. But nighttime temperatures are sometimes cool enough to bring down water temperatures by the time morning comes around. They become uncomfortable for swimming at times, especially in combination with strong trade winds. Western and southern Caribbean weather is ideal during these winter months. Note that the Bahamas are especially cooler in January.

My trips to the Caribbean in February have taught me to expect some of the lowest rain of the year but also some of the coolest water temperatures. Go to farther south destinations for warmer weather. Avoid northern destinations such as the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

I suggest planning on shopping, shore excursions and other land activities in the mornings until temperatures get warmer. Hit the beach in the early to mid afternoon for the warmest land and water temperatures of the day.

Our February weather guide has average temperatures for every major destination.

March weather in the Caribbean is nearly ideal for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain for most destinations. It’s one of the best times to visit for a cruise or hotel vacation. It’s also a popular time because of spring break from schools.

Average daytime temperatures reach the mid 80s Fahrenheit or or high 20s Celsius for many major destinations.

Western Caribbean cruises to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and other islands are especially popular during this month. Beware spring break that will flood some destinations with families and college students. Cancun in particular often gets quite busy.

March weather also offers one of the driest months of the year for the Caribbean. Many islands have two inches of rain or less for the entire month compared to as much as eight to 10 inches in the fall.

Caribbean weather in April gets even better than March. In my experience, April has the best weather in the Caribbean for any month of the year.

Temperatures mostly climb into the mid 80s Farenheit and high 20s Celsius. They warm to the point where swimming is usually comfortable even in northern destinations. One exception is the Bahamas, which are in the Atlantic but common stops on Caribbean cruises. April also is near the end of the dry season, so most islands have low risk of rain.

Not surprisingly, the Caribbean in May has warmer temperatures than April. But May also brings a brief rainy season to some destinations.

Locations with higher risk of rain include the Bahamas, Cancun, Cozumel, Dominica, Grand Cayman and Jamaica. It’s a better time of year for eastern or especially southern Caribbean cruises to places such as Aruba and Curaçao. It is not the best time for western Caribbean cruises. Instead, a better time to go to the western Caribbean is January through April when those locations have a lower risk of rain.

Caribbean weather in June is the official start of hurricane season, but it’s a weak start. Although hurricanes in June are rare, the average rainfall climbs for many Caribbean islands. The Bahamas, which are just outside the Caribbean Sea, have the highest rainfall among major islands with an average of more than eight inches. Other destinations with higher than normal rainfall include the western Caribbean destinations of Cancun, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. Belize and Costa Rica in the western Caribbean also have high levels of rain, but heavy rainfall is normal for them.

Destinations with a lower risk of rain are in the southern and eastern Caribbean. Islands with a light to moderate risk of rain include Antigua, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten.

July weather in the Caribbean is more risky than June because of increasing rainfall from the Caribbean hurricane season.

The region averages three tropical storms during the month with two becoming hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. This compares to one tropical storm and rarely any hurricanes in June.

July is a hot month. Average daytime high temperatures reach or go above about 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius for many major destinations. They include Aruba, Cancun, Cozumel, Curaçao, Grand Cayman and St. Maarten.

Early July is less risky than late July because the Caribbean hurricane season gradually gets worse as its gets closer to the peak months of September and October. But anyone planning a summer vacation in the Caribbean should try to go in June rather than July and July rather than August.

August weather is usually grim for the Bahamas. Historically, Nassau averages more than nine inches of rain during the month, according to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology. Anyone planning a Caribbean cruise during August might want to avoid the Bahamas.

Belize, Costa Rica, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique also historically have high levels of rain in August. Islands with the lowest average rainfall are Aruba and Curaçao. Destinations with moderate rainfall include Antigua, St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

Heat reaches the highest point of the year for many destinations. Average daytime temperatures often go above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius for Aruba, Cancun, Cayman Islands, Cozumel and Curaçao.

Caribbean Cruise Weather by Month

Prepare to be awed as you sail into the best Caribbean cruise destinations with Princess, where relaxation and adventure are the only things on your to-do list. With any of our itineraries, experience the island lifestyle that keeps so many guests coming back for more. Here are the best Caribbean cruise destinations to consider for your next adventure.

With abundant sunshine and clear blue skies, Caribbean cruise weather is known for being consistent year-round. Here’s everything to know about typical weather forecasts on a Caribbean cruise.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in January and February

Even in the middle of winter, Caribbean cruise weather feels like a tropical oasis. As the start of the dry season, January yields the least amount of rain all year. While climates will vary depending on which region you’re sailing, expect temperatures to range from the upper 80s during the day to the mid-60s in the evening. If you’re cruising to ports like Aruba or Bonaire in the Southern Caribbean , you’ll likely experience the warmest conditions, as they’re the closest to the equator. Take advantage of the unique winter climates by jet skiing along one of Aruba’s pristine beaches or strolling through the lush botanical gardens in Martinique.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in March and April

The Caribbean springs to life in March and April as festival season begins. With slightly warmer temperatures and little-to-no-clouds in sight, there are even more reasons to celebrate. Visit Grand Cayman in April and experience Cayfest, the island’s annual celebration of art, music and cultural diversity. During the dry season, let the radiant sun feed your imagination without worry of anyone — or anything — raining on your parade. With waters around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, take a dip in the Caribbean Sea while visiting Bamboo Beach Club. Even Eastern Caribbean islands — like Princess Cays ® in the Bahamas — anticipate ideal Caribbean cruise weather.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in May and June

Summer weather forecasts on a Caribbean cruise bring a variety of flavors to each region. While the Southern Caribbean maintains its sunny disposition, other destinations welcome refreshing ocean breezes. Occasional light showers are the perfect excuse to head inside and tour the Graycliff Chocolatier, where you can create your own decadent masterpiece with local ingredients like mango and lime. Or sip on an aromatic flight of wines at Bahama Barrels while hearing stories from locals. Then, cruise into clearer conditions and partake in one of the many music festivals that dot the rural roads like the Pure Grenada Music Festival in May or the St. Kitts Music Festival in June. Whether swimming in the crystalline ocean or singing in the refreshing rain, come prepared with a light rain jacket, loose clothing and a heart full of wonder.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in July and August

For the quintessential summer vacation, cruise to the Caribbean in July and make the most of your days and nights. With More Ashore late night departures and overnight stays, revel in the warm evening climates that invite you to set sail on an Aruba sunset cruise or frolic along the Mambo Beach Boulevard in Curacao . During the daytime, bask in typical Caribbean cruise weather ranging from the mid-70s to upper 80s. Spend time floating in the warmest ocean temperatures of the year, or sunbathe on the golden beaches of the Western Caribbean during their driest month. If you’re cruising to the Eastern region, soak up the summer sun on any of the dazzling beaches, or head indoors for a taste of true Caribbean culture. In St. Kitts , delight in a relaxing swim at Pinney’s Beach followed by a festive island lunch. Or join a game of volleyball when you arrive at Honeymoon Beach in St. Thomas , and then cool off in the refreshing waters.

As July comes to a close, the calming sound of August rain brings an air of utter relaxation to the islands. During this month, locals head indoors to prepare for the busy season ahead. The weather in the Caribbean in August also means that many excursions are put on pause. As so, Princess does not sail to these regions during late summer and early fall. Instead, we invite guests to visit these breathtaking islands when the sand is dry and the waters are calm.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in October and November

While the rainy season lasts from the beginning of October through November, these are some of the best months to cruise to the Caribbean . Sip and savor your way through the Barbados Food and Rum Festival in October where local chefs prepare culinary treasures that give you a taste of island life. In the Grand Cayman, don your tricorn hat and line the streets to watch pirates invade George Town during Pirates Week Festival. Enjoy rhythmic music, family-friendly competitions and local cuisine alongside locals and visitors. Besides the occasional rainfall, Caribbean cruise weather in November will be similar to that in early summer with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Caribbean Cruise Weather in December

The holidays offer even more reasons to celebrate in the Caribbean this December. Trade the snow-filled driveways and icy roads for warm white-sand shores and refreshing ocean waters on a holiday cruise . You can still enjoy a white Christmas on board with life-like snow in the Atrium. Or enjoy hot chocolate and gingerbread-house building throughout your time on board. Then, make your way ashore where balmy Caribbean cruise weather encourages you to float down the tree-lined rivers of Falmouth, Jamaica, on a bamboo raft. Or dive beneath the water to explore rainbow-colored reefs and marine life on a snorkeling expedition in Martinique. With adventures teeming both above and below the surface, pack your bags for a   winter to remember.

From January to July, these tropical islands experience an array of weather forecasts. On a Caribbean cruise with Princess, embark on an ideal adventure amidst refreshing rain or sunny skies. View Caribbean cruises .

Alaska Cruise Weather

What to expect and when to visit

Cruise season in Alaska is just five months long, running from May to September, although Holland America Line offers Alaska cruises in late April and early October.

So when is the best weather to cruise Alaska? Keep in mind that Alaska and the Yukon make up an enormous mass of land; in fact, combined they are about half the size of the lower 48 states! As you can imagine, it can be difficult to speak in generalities about the climate for a place so vast. However, we’ve broken down the weather in Alaska by season and area, with advice on what to expect, so you can choose the best time to cruise to Alaska.

Weather In Alaska By Season

cruise weather now

Temperatures will be lower in the spring (early May to late June), and the weather a bit more unpredictable, but on the plus side there are fewer visitors in  Alaska  and the prices are likely to be a bit lower. So if you’re on the hunt for some of that famous northern solitude, spring is the time for you. And best of all, the land is bursting back to life after the long, cold winter months. Flowers are blooming, bears are rousing from their slumber, and a sense of renewal permeates the land. So, don’t scratch spring off your calendar just because Alaska’s climate may not be ideal.

Average Spring Temperatures:

  • Inside Passage/Southeast; Southcentral; and Interior:  daytime highs in the mid 50s to upper 60s, with low temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.
  • Far North/Arctic:  daytime highs in the mid 20s to upper 30s, with low temperatures in the mid-teens to upper 20s.

Summer is the peak season for tourism and considered the best time for Alaska cruises, and for good reason. Running from late June to mid-August, summer has the warmest temperatures, near endless sunlight (approximately 18 hours or more per day!), and the best chances for  viewing wildlife . And with the tourism industry in full swing, you’ll find more services and a seemingly endless list of activities to take part in. But you won’t be alone — more stuff to do and nicer weather in Alaska means more people — and the prices will generally be a bit higher.

Average Summer Temperatures:

  • Inside Passage/Southeast; Southcentral; and Interior:  daytime highs in the low 60s to low 70s, with low temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s.
  • Far North/Arctic:  daytime highs in the low to mid 40s, with low temperatures in the lower 30s.

Denali National Park in Alaska at Autumn

This is when Alaska and the Yukon are enjoying a last hurrah before winter sets in. Running from late August through September, fall in Alaska can feel very much like spring. The temperatures will be cooler and the weather more unpredictable, but, like the spring, prices will often be lower and you’ll have less company. And the Alaska wildlife viewing can rival that of the summer, as creatures great and small are out prepping for the barren, frigid months ahead. With fall comes shorter days, but this isn’t without its advantages. Shorter days mean there is an excellent chance of  seeing the Northern Lights  (Aurora Borealis) in the late evenings.

Average Fall Temperatures:

  • Inside Passage/Southeast; Southcentral; and Interior:  daytime highs in the mid 50s to low 60s, with low temperatures in the low 40s.
  • Far North/Arctic:  daytime highs in the mid to upper 30s, with low temperatures in the mid 20s.

Each season has its pluses and minuses and the best time to cruise to Alaska depends on what’s important to you. Now that you know what to expect from the weather, peruse  Alaska cruise itineraries .

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 10:34 am.

Nobody was trying to reach the lowest depths of the ocean or otherwise test the boundaries of human endurance .

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"
