20 Surprising Facts About Disney Cruises

Fans of Disneyland and Disney World who want to take a trip on the high seas might be curious to know what this cruise line has to offer.

If you're in the market for a cruise ship vacation, you might have been considering Disney. Fans of Disneyland and Disney World who want to take a trip on the high seas will love getting the chance to meet their favorite characters and keep experiencing the lovely magic of this popular brand.

There are some aspects of these cruise ships that are like other cruises, from various dining rooms to the rooms that you sleep in, to the entertainment that is offered. But there are a lot of aspects that are totally unique to Disney and that you won't find anywhere else. This is why people love these ships so much and continue to book them year after year.

Here are 20 surprising facts about Disney cruises.

20 You Can Definitely Ask To Sit Where You Want

According to  Travel and Leisure , when you're booking your Disney cruise, you could see if you can sit in certain areas while eating your meals.

This might not be something that you're interested in, of course, but it's cool to know that you could have the option. This is surprising because it might seem like you have to sit wherever there's room, but it seems that Disney cruises are all about awesome customer service and they want you to enjoy it all.

19 The Employees Don't Always Love The Food

People who go on Disney cruises regularly say that the food is great, and it definitely looks awesome from photos that passengers post online. But what about the employees? What do they eat?

As someone who has worked on Disney cruises posted on  Reddit , "food was AWFUL! I ate a lot of cereal."

18 There Are Carpets That Actually Tell You Where You Are

Any cruise ship is going to be pretty massive, and it makes sense if you aren't really certain about where you are, particularly at the beginning of your trip.

According to  WDW Info , "Find one of the frequently placed maps on the carpet; if the map is right-side up you are headed forward, if it is upside down you are headed aft."

17 Disney Cruises Have a Cool Way Of Cutting Down On Water Waste

We all could use less water in our every day lives. It's pretty crazy how much water we waste while showering for a super long time or leaving the tap on while brushing our teeth.

Disney cruise ships have a cool way of cutting down on water waste, and it's just so genius. As  Popsugar  says, "The ships save up to 22.3 million gallons of freshwater per year" as the ships are cleaned with water from the A/C.

16 You Can Get A Coffee Drink With Mickey Mouse On It

It's definitely surprising to learn that if you enjoy certain things about the Disney Parks, you can get them on the cruise ships, too. It would be easy to think that they would keep these things separate, but thankfully they don't.

Travel and Leisure  says that the Cove Cafe on the ships will give you a coffee that has Mickey Mouse's face on it. This is adorable.

15 Characters Wear Location-Specific Clothing

As  Travel and Leisure  explains, the employees who dress up like the Disney characters that everyone loves wear clothing that is specific to the location of the cruise. As the publication says, "On Alaska sailings, expect to meet Mickey in fisherman’s overalls and Minnie in a fur-lined coat." That is really cool, right?

14 Kids Don't Eat Dinner In Restaurants On Day One

According to  Mouse Savers , it's not going to be possible for children to eat dinner in any restaurants on Disney cruise ships on day one. The blog suggests that parents use the "self-serve restaurants" and then go eat in a restaurant like Remy's that only allows grown-ups to eat there. The website also mentions that kids will get food in the kid areas (called the Club or the Lab) but they could be too busy having fun to eat it.

13 Getting There Before Your Dinner Reservation Won't Get You Seated

Mouse Savers  says that if you're there before your dinner reservation is scheduled for, that's not actually going to do anything for you. The website explains, "We recommend not rushing to dinner. If you show up five minutes after they begin seating you’ll walk right in. If you show up early you’ll just have to wait in line!"

That is surprising to hear because you would think that you could eat sooner rather than later, but that's good to know in advance.

12 There Are A Ton Of Employees

Another surprising fact about Disney cruises is that there is a huge amount of employes. Sure, you would assume that there would need to be since there are many different ships and they are big, but the number is probably higher than you were expecting it to be.

According to  Popsugar , there are "950 crew members total" which means a one-to-three ratio for employees and passengers on the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder.

11 You Can Get Dole Whip And Even Send Mail On Disney Cruises

Thanks to  Blog.dvcrequest.com,  we know that you can send mail from Castaway Cay, which is a location that you'll see after leaving your cruise. There's a post office, which looks so adorable.

You can also get Dole Whip, the super popular snack that fans love getting when they visit the Disney Parks.

10 You Can See Movies At The Same Time They're In Movie Theaters

Popsugar  says that when you're traveling on a Disney cruise, you can watch movies in the ship's theatre at the same time as they're starting in movie theaters back home.

This is a great detail to know about because it would make your cruise experience even more special. This would be a great thing to share with your friends after your cruise.

9 Call It A Ship, Please

Another surprising fact about Disney cruises is that saying it's a "boat" is actually a no go.

According to  Picture The Magic , you should definitely say that you're on a "ship" and should refrain from saying the word "boat."  The website mentions that some people actually get upset about this.

8 Want To Go On A Christmas Or Halloween Disney Cruise?

Travel Pulse  says that there are some Disney cruise ships that you can vacation on that have themes, including for Halloween and Christmas.

This is surprising as it wouldn't be something that you would expect for them to do. Sure, you would expect there to be employees dressed up at Disney characters. But it's fun to know that you could go during the winter holidays and have a great festive time.

7 You Want To Set Up Meet And Greets Before (But You Might Get Lucky When You Get There)

Picture The Magic  shares that while of course, you want to set up your meet and greets before you board the cruise ship since you want to ensure that your children will be able to have this fun experience, there are a few spaces for people who didn't do that yet. That's good to know, especially if you got busy before leaving for your trip or you just forgot.

6 You Could Have The Same Waiter/Waitress Each Night

Rd.com  says that you could have the same waiter/waitress every night during your Disney cruise. This might be surprising since there are so many employees on every Disney cruise ship, but it's always helpful to know as much as you can before you go on a trip.

Rd.com  explains that they will ensure you have exactly what you want since they'll see you a few times in a row.

5 You Don't Have To Tip As They're Included

To tip or not to tip? While you always want to do the right thing and leave a nice tip, sometimes it can be tricky to know what the etiquette is.

Rd.com  says that tips are included when you're on a Disney cruise. This is surprising because not a lot of places do that and you always have to figure out the tip on your own.

4 People Eat 10,000 Pounds Of Chicken On The Ships Over One Week

World Of Walt  says that in a week on the Disney cruise ships, the amount of chicken that people eat is 10,000 pounds.

Yes. 10,000 pounds. That is an absolutely insane number. It's hard to even comprehend that amount of food. People do say that it's the most popular kind of meat... but that's a lot of chicken.

3 There Are Restaurants Where No Kids Are Allowed

Travel Pulse  says that Disney cruise ships have restaurants where no children can dine. Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream have Remy, which serves French cuisine, and every ship has Palo, which serves Italian food.

It's surprising that the grown-ups and children would have separate places to eat, and this is something that we probably didn't know about.

2 The Washrooms Are Super Convenient

Do we think that going to the bathroom on a Disney cruise is a great experience? We might be expecting less-than-amazing restrooms but that's not actually the case at all.

According to  Chip and Co , the washrooms on Disney cruise ships are super convenient and also unique to cruises. They are considered a "bath-and-a-half" so you have two rooms: a toilet and sink in one area and then your shower in the other.

1 The Ships Are Bigger Than Main Street In Disney's Magic Kingdom

We know that cruise ships are large, but we might be surprised to hear that the Disney ones are even bigger than the Main Street in Disney's Magic Kingdom.

World Of Walt  says that Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are 984 feet and Main Street is 966. That sounds so magical.

You may have heard of Disney Cruise Line , or DCL, but you might not know much about the magical trips.

DCL has four ships — the Disney Magic, the Disney Wonder, the Disney Fantasy, and the Disney Dream — and each offers a different experience, though many have some of the same special details and designs.

Here are some interesting things you may not know about Disney cruises.

DCL had to get special permission to use yellow lifeboats on its ships.

disney cruise line facts

DCL was the first cruise line to have lifeboats that are yellow and not the regulated orange color — and it had to get special permission from the US Coast Guard to do so.

The yellow boats are meant to be the same shade as Mickey Mouse's shoes, which keeps the ship's Mickey color scheme — the hull of the ship is black, the superstructure is white, the funnels are red, and the trim is yellow.

You can easily navigate the ship by looking down at your feet.

disney cruise line facts

The hallways on a DCL ship might seem confusing, but no matter where you're going you can direct yourself by looking down at the carpet, since the stars on it always point toward the front of the ship.

On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, you can also remember what side of the deck your room is on by looking at the clips on the side of your door.

The starboard (right) side rooms have starfish clips and the port (left) side rooms have fish clips.

Minnie Mouse was promoted to Captain Minnie in 2019 as part of a STEM initiative.

disney cruise line facts

Captain Minnie was introduced to DCL in April 2019 because Disney wanted to help inspire the next generation of female leaders in the maritime industry.

The initiative also included the debut of a new youth program where Captain Minnie Mouse helps train young passengers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills that are needed for success on an ocean-liner.

Disney has a private island that many of its cruises visit.

disney cruise line facts

Located in the Bahamas, Disney's private island Castaway Cay is on the itinerary for a number of DCL trips.

The island has a beach for families, and it also has an adults-only beach called Serenity Bay, which is tucked away off an old airstrip. This beach has a dedicated lunch spot and bar, too.

While on a Disney cruise, you can run a 5K race.

disney cruise line facts

The race takes place on Castaway Cay, but if a ship doesn't dock there due to weather conditions, the Castaway 5K will typically happen on the ship.

DCL ships have unlimited, free soft-serve ice cream.

disney cruise line facts

Throughout the ship, guests can have unlimited, free ice cream from designated machines.

For those who are willing to spend a few bucks, some of the DCL ships also have specialty gelato shops where you can get themed sundaes.

Cruisegoers can get unlimited Mickey-shaped ice-cream bars delivered to their room for free.

disney cruise line facts

The same Mickey-shaped ice-cream bars that you can get at Disney parks are available on the ships for free, and those onboard a Disney cruise can use the 24-hour room service to order them whenever they like.

Some of the DCL ships play famous Disney songs with their horns.

disney cruise line facts

On both the Disney Fantasy and the Disney Dream, you'll hear quite a few familiar Disney songs when the ship blows its horn.

Song selection is up to the captain and the crew, but some of the songs they can choose from are "When You Wish Upon a Star," "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)," "It's a Small World," "Be Our Guest," and "Do You Want to Build a Snowman."

The cruises use fireworks that are made of "fish food."

disney cruise line facts

DCL claims to be the first cruise line to have fireworks at sea, and its fireworks' shells are actually made of special biodegradable materials, which Disney calls "fish food."

All Disney movies premiere on the ship when they debut in movie theaters on land.

disney cruise line facts

On Disney cruises, new movies typically get a midnight premiere and then have multiple showings in the weeks and months that follow the initial release.

On the ships, iconic Disney characters can be found wearing special outfits each night.

disney cruise line facts

DCL packs a whole new wardrobe for its beloved characters, like Mickey, Donald Duck, and Minnie

During each night of the cruise, Mickey and the gang are dressed in something different, like formal attire, pirate-themed garb, or even the traditional outfits of the place the ship visited that day.

40 Disney Cruise Tips and Secrets You Should Know Before You Go

These tips will make your Disney cruise vacation even more magical.

disney cruise line facts

Cruise vacations are a great way to unwind and relax in some of the most beautiful locales in the world, and a Disney cruise takes the traditional experience up a notch with unique, familiar touches and a little bit of magic. With so much to know before you set sail with Disney Cruise Line, it's easy to miss out on the most interesting facts and features.

Even if you think you know all about the ships and activities on board, you can still return to port without ever knowing about the secret sundecks, unannounced character greetings, and unexpected Mickey-shaped foods. Whether you're planning for this year or the next, prepare yourself for a hefty dose of Disney knowledge, because for you, these Disney cruise tips and secrets are no longer under wraps.

Meet the Expert

Adrianna Hwang is a planDisney panelist specializing in Disney Cruise Line.

Heather Peggs is a Disney travel expert with Castle Bound Travel Company.

Book your cruise early to get the best deal.

Disney uses a dynamic pricing system, meaning the earlier you book, the more you’ll save. Early bookings also ensure that you get your desired cabin. You can even book your next cruise while on board to save even more. The best part? This placeholder is fully refundable if plans change.

Consider booking a themed sailing.

Disney Cruise Line offers a limited number of themed sailings, including Pixar Day at Sea and Marvel Day at Sea itineraries. These cruises up the ante with specialty shows and character appearances from beloved franchises, including Captain America , Toy Story , and more. You’ll also want to check out the special holiday cruises surrounding Halloween and Christmas. During these sailings, you’ll spot characters in special outfits and can enjoy themed food and beverage options, specialty entertainment, and much more. Disney Cruise Line guests love to bring themed attire to celebrate the occasion, so plan ahead if you want to partake in the fun.

Save big and let the mouse pick your room.

If you’re not picky about where your cabin is located on the ship, you can save a substantial amount of money by letting Disney pick your cabin. Just select your room type, like an inside cabin, and your specific cabin number will be assigned closer to your sail date.

See if cabin upgrades are available when you arrive at the port.

When available, cruisers may be able to snag an affordable last-minute room upgrade at the port, saving hundreds on a higher-tier room.

Download the app before you go.

Disney Cruise Line’s exclusive Navigator app is an absolute must-have to make the most of your time at sea. It adds convenience while taking care of practical vacation elements, like payment, online check-in, and trip modifications. This is also your go-to for pre-registering for Disney Cruise Line’s wide range of activities and keeping tabs on the daily schedule, which includes showtimes and deck parties. You can also communicate with your family and other cruise-goers for free using the app.

And don’t miss out on this convenient notification feature: “Scroll through the daily activity schedule to look for entertainment options that interest you, and be sure to click the heart icon next to any listings you don't want to miss,” planDisney panelist Adrianna Hwang tells Travel + Leisure . “If you've enabled notifications for the app, you'll receive a reminder about 15 minutes before the activity will begin. It's a really helpful feature when you lose track of time relaxing by the pool!”

This is especially important if character meet-and-greets are a priority for you. “The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app will list character appearance times and locations so that you can be sure to catch your favorite Disney characters on board,” Hwang adds. “If you select the specific character listed in the Daily Activity Schedule within the app, you'll even see the full schedule of times to meet them throughout the cruise so that you can plan accordingly.” Hwang suggests arriving at the greet locations at least five to 10 minutes early.

Use your Castaway Club perks to book extras early.

If you’re looking to book extras, like shore excursions and elevated dining experiences, your booking window depends on your loyalty to Disney Cruise Line. The Castaway Club is Disney’s version of a frequent cruiser program, and sailors earn status based on the number of sailings they’ve been on. Higher status translates to earlier booking windows, so Disney Cruise Line loyalists can score their desired bookings first.

Plan to exchange your currency onboard.

Not only does Disney Cruise Line take no commission for exchanging bills , but they'll actually honor the transaction's rate of exchange for any leftover money. Simply present your receipt prior to the end of the cruise, and they'll convert your foreign currency back to your preferred denomination at the same rate, even if the exchange rate has since changed. (Note: This only applies to bills, not coins, and there is no ATM on board.)

Bring a reusable water bottle.

While there are water fountains and bottle refill stations on board, they can be far away from your room — and disposable bottles (not included in the fare) can add up. The tap water in each room is drinkable, but sinks are often too small to accommodate big bottles. You can bring packs of bottled water, but you'll have to carry it through embarkation — it cannot be packed with luggage — so consider bringing refillable bottles or tumblers.

See characters in their special cruise wardrobe.

Thought you knew everything there was to know about the Fab Five? Wait until you see them in their exclusive Disney Cruise Line wardrobe. Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Mickey, and Minnie wear special outfits for Pirate Night, and they also tailor their outfits to where the ship is headed that day. On Alaska sailings, expect to meet Mickey in fisherman's overalls and Minnie in a fur-lined coat; on trips through the Mediterranean Sea, Goofy dons an Italy-inspired suit. Specialty characters are also known to show up from time to time, like Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle appearing as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus during the spooky season.

Aspiring princesses won’t want to miss the Royal Gathering.

The Royal Gathering is your chance to meet and greet with Disney royalty, like Tiana and Cinderella, all at one time and place. It’s offered on most cruise itineraries but there is a catch: while tickets are free, they are required to attend. “Complimentary tickets to the Royal Gathering are available to be booked online or through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app or Disneycruise.com 30 days before your sail date,” Hwang adds. “Take this experience to the next level for your little one by reserving a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover an hour or two before the Royal Gathering begins.”

And know that the most memorable character experiences won’t be at meet-and-greets.

The lines to meet Mickey and Minnie are (amazingly!) short on Disney Cruise Line, but favorites like Daisy Duck are known to freely wander the pool and jogging track decks, playfully surprising guests and often sharing elevator rides for a once-in-a-lifetime interaction. Don't miss the character dance parties either, which allow kids and adults to line dance with Goofy and shake it off with Donald Duck for an experience that goes beyond a hug and photograph.

Order whatever you’d like to eat — and as much as you’d like.

Disney Cruise Line’s dinnertime meal service operates on a rotating restaurant schedule, so you'll get to enjoy each restaurant the ship offers — and some more than once on longer sailings. These highly themed restaurants, like Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure on the Disney Wish , offer pre-fixe dinner menus. Torn between two entrees? Order them both. Each of your ship’s included rotational dining restaurants comes with a fixed three-course option that is all-you-care-to-enjoy.

Splurge on specialty dining.

Standard dining is fantastic, but Disney ships also have adults-only restaurants available at an extra charge. Depending on your ship, this could include the French-focused Remy or fan-favorite Palo. While Remy and Enchante can be pricey, you can enjoy Palo for as little as $50.

And on the Disney Wish , you won’t want to miss its newest iteration, Palo Steakhouse. “If you've sailed with Disney before, you may be familiar with Palo, but on the Wish , Palo Steakhouse is even better,” Heather Peggs, a Disney travel expert with Castle Bound Travel Company, shares with T+L. “I highly recommend trying the A5 wagyu steak, which is about a fifth of the price it would be off the ship, and it's absolutely phenomenal!”

These upgraded dining experiences are known to book up well in advance, but there is occasionally a waitlist available for canceled and missed reservations. “If you can't snag a reservation before the cruise, inquire in person on the day you embark,” Hwang adds. “Look for the activity listed as ‘Dining Reservation Changes’ to speak with a crew member about reservation availability.”

Request the best seat in the house at dinner.

Always dreamed of sitting by the stage at Tiana's Place on the Disney Wonder or enjoying dinner in those gorgeous Enchanted Garden booths on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ? Well, it's not entirely luck of the draw. Nothing is guaranteed, but requests for a certain table can always be added to your Disney Cruise Line reservation, and they are worth the extra phone call. Concierge guests can make seating requests to their Concierge Service Specialist before boarding as well. You never know when Disney will sprinkle a little extra magic onto your vacation.

And don’t miss the best dinner entertainment.

The dinner show at Animator's Palate is a highlight if you’re sailing on the Magic, Wonder, Dream, or Fantasy, but it's the second visit to that dining room that can't be skipped. It's called Animation Magic, and guests get to draw their own characters and see them come to life on the screens mid-meal. The incredible display is only offered on longer sailings on the Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy, so make sure you don’t skip it. Even better? Request that your rotation allows two visits to Animator's Palate that don't overlap with Pirate Night to ensure you enjoy the show.

Grab a free soda at this spot.

Soda is included during sit-down meals, but if you’re craving a thirst quencher outside of those times, go to the free-flowing beverage stations near the pools on each Disney ship.

Sip cocktails at this favorite bar.

There are plenty of themed watering holes in the adults-only areas of the ships, but on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy , Meridian is the place to be. The upscale bar and lounge is located next door to Palo and Remy, but it is open to all adults adhering to its business casual dress code. Though known for its martinis, Meridian also offers a cigar bar, custom craft cocktails, and a gin and tonic cart, as well as a private deck hosting a picture-perfect view of nightly sunsets.

Check out the Star Wars -themed bar on the Disney Wish .

Star Wars : Hyperspace Lounge is a bar exclusively found on the Disney Wish . “Whether you’re an avid Star Wars fan or just want to explore the galaxy, you will be able to enjoy delicious alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages that are simply out of this world,” adds Peggs. Reservations are no longer required, but there might be a wait, especially during peak hours; visit when the ship is in port to avoid the crowds. During the day, guests of all ages are allowed in.

It’s a multi-sensory experience in this immersive, interactive venue, and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled in case anyone orders the $5,000 Kaiburr Crystal cocktail.

Save on drinks during happy hour at sea.

Be sure to check the Navigator app for daily happy hours at different bars and lounges. The exact offers vary, but they can include deals like half-off draft beer and discounts on specialty cocktails. And if you’re looking to take your cocktail knowledge to the next level, cruises also offer add-on mixology classes and tasting experiences.

Ask about the Sommelier Bin for discounted wine.

Once a bottle of wine is opened, Disney must serve it (in its entirety) that day. Because of this, Disney ships have a sommelier bin, with opened bottles of wine served by the glass at highly discounted rates. This is your chance to sip on otherwise pricey pours at a bargain price. Now that’s Disney magic.

Or B.Y.O.B. to save money.

Looking to save a few bucks? While Disney ships offer a bevy of specialty cocktails, you can bring your own drinks — with some limitations. Hard liquor is a no-go, but each cruiser 21 years of age and up can bring two bottles of wine (or six-packs of beer) on board with them. If you’re thinking of bringing that bottle of wine with you to dinner, be aware that Disney does charge a corkage fee. You can also bring sealed bottles of water on board with you.

Take a second look at that barbershop on the Disney Wish .

Hook’s Barbery may look like any old upscale barbershop when walking by — but it’s hiding one of the best-kept secrets aboard any Disney ship. Tucked away within the salon is a hidden speakeasy-style bar serving expertly crafted cocktails, including a smoked old fashioned. Its liquor selection is extensive and surprising with rare and vintage pours.

Snack on soft serve on and off the ship.

If you’re a frequent Disney cruiser, you’re probably familiar with the line’s free-flowing soft-serve ice cream. And if the craving strikes when visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you’ll be glad to know it’s also available on the island for the ultimate sugar rush in the sun.

Get an extra-magical coffee.

Few can resist a Mickey-shaped treat while visiting any Disney property, but the best mouse-themed treat on the ships can be found at Cove Cafe . Order a cappuccino, ask for Mickey's face on it, and prepare to enjoy your jolt of caffeine with some extra magic. It'll cost a few bucks, but the joy of sipping a “Mickeyccino” will always outshine the complimentary coffee served on board.

Order a Mickey bar — and more — with free room service.

You’ll be glad to know that, unlike other cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line’s room service is completely free and offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The best part? You can have an iconic Disney treat, the Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar, delivered directly to your room.

Book early if you plan to use the ship’s nursery.

Bookings open early for guests looking to take advantage of the onboard nursery. Available for an extra charge, the It’s a Small World Nursery is available to supervise your child ages six months to three years old, ideal if you’d like a quiet dinner or time to explore one of the ship’s many themed lounges without the little one in tow. And don’t forget — the other youth clubs for kids, tweens, and teens are absolutely free.

Teens can hang out in the coolest part of the ship.

Every Disney ship has a Vibe , an onboard youth club that is exclusively available for teens ages 14 to 17. There is supervision, of course, and Disney Cruise Line's famously fun activities, but it's practically a private resort for high schoolers to chill in all day and night — no parents allowed.

Explore the kids clubs during the open house.

Activities at the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Star Wars : Millennium Falcon play areas are reserved for young ones, but all kids club spaces empty out for the open house, when anyone can wander in and check out Vibe's arcade games or Oceaneer Lab's high-tech designs. Don't skip out on Andy's Room, which brings Toy Story to life while making for incredible Instagram snaps. And you won’t want to miss a multi-level slide on the Disney Wish which takes you from floor to floor in the ship’s soaring lobby. “Little ones can get comfortable with and excited about areas where they will play without their grownups,” shares Hwang.

Join a secret community of friends — hiding in plain sight.

Ever seen those homemade decorations hanging beside neighbors' doors? They're called fish extenders, and they're used by a network of families who have packed small gifts, treats, and trinkets to exchange with each other throughout their trip. To get in on the fun for your next sailing, visit the DisBoards Cruise Meets forum or CruiseCritic's Roll Calls . Many times, there are Facebook groups for your exact sailing as well. This can be particularly helpful with shy kids as they can get acquainted with other cruise-goers their age ahead of their journey.

Add an Adventures by Disney trip to your vacation.

You can enhance your Disney Cruise Line experience with Adventures by Disney Escapes before or after your sailing. Experience global cities through expertly curated itineraries in Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and beyond.

Spring for a concierge-level room and relax on a private sun deck.

There are plenty of perks that come with booking a concierge-level room — namely early access to onboard bookings, personalized service, and in-room amenities. And perhaps the best part, concierge guests have access to their own private sun and lounge deck outfitted with upscale lounge chairs, complimentary sunscreen, and chilled face towels, as well as a pool deck host who can fulfill any requests for full relaxation.

See the latest Disney movies.

Enjoy the latest Disney releases at the on-board theater without having to buy tickets in advance. Even better? Many new Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars films have 3-D showings, allowing guests to experience eye-popping effects on the high seas. Movie times are available on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. And during the holidays, classics are featured, like “Hocus Pocus” during Halloween sailings.

Skip the ports to enjoy fewer crowds at the pool.

It may be tempting to disembark and explore Jamaica or relax on Castaway Cay, but if you stay behind, you can enjoy fewer crowds at the pools. This could be your prime chance to experience the AquaMouse water coaster, the cruise line’s first attraction at sea on the Disney Wish , with little to no line.

There are also lots of activities to take advantage of on board. “I must say I'm a huge fan of staying on board even on port days to explore the array of classes, Broadway-caliber shows, and, of course, the games,” adds Peggs. “If you're looking for family-friendly options, a couple of my favorites are Bingo, which they have every day during your sailing, napkin and towel folding, bar trivia, and so much more!”

Don’t miss the musicals.

While it may be tempting to take advantage of quieter swim times in the evening, you won’t want to miss your ship’s musical offerings. Broadway-quality productions including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” (exact offerings depend on the ship) are a must-see. “These are beautifully done and are wonderful for the entire family,” Peggs adds. “Plus, if you purchase a popcorn bucket at the beginning of the cruise, you will be able to enjoy $1.50 refills for the remainder of your cruise!”

There’s an under-the-radar design tour.

Adults 18 and up can enjoy one of the cruise line’s best walking tours. “The Art of The Theme Show Tour gives adults an insightful look into the detailed and thoughtful design of several spaces throughout the ship,” adds Hwang. “It's usually offered in the mornings and provides some fun trivia to share with anyone in your party.”

Unwind at the spa.

You’re on vacation — it’s time to pamper yourself in the state-of-the-art spa. “If you are interested in booking a spa treatment, attend the open house before the ship sets sail,” Peggs shares. “You might get lucky and win a voucher for 10% off or possibly a facial or massage during the raffle. Speaking of savings, the more spa services you get while on board, the better the price will be. If you want to secure a spa day/week pass, be sure to book them sooner rather than later as they sell out pretty quickly!”

There’s a totally free fan-favorite activity.

If your itinerary takes you to Disney’s Castaway Cay, then you can partake in one of Disney Cruise Line’s most beloved activities, the Castaway Cay 5k — and it’s completely free to all guests. Suitable for runners and walkers alike, this on-your-own race invites you to discover Disney’s private island from a different vantage point as you travel through its stunning tropical paths. All participants receive an exclusive medal when they finish.

Not feeling well during your sailing? Disney can help.

There’s nothing worse than feeling sick on vacation. But have no fear, the mouse is here to help. Each ship is equipped with on-site medical help, and if you experience seasickness, complimentary medicine is available.

Grab every photo before the clock runs out.

Even if you skipped every character meet-and-greet, you'll still be able to cram in a week's worth of photos at "Til' We Meet Again," the goodbye show on the final night of each sailing. After a short heartwarming performance, loads of Disney characters, princesses, and theater performers will disperse throughout the crowd, posing for photos on a first-come, first-served basis. The onboard photographers will have already shut down, so you can snap as many iPhone pictures as you'd like, making for a full album in one fell swoop. This experience only lasts for around 20 minutes; you can find the exact time in the Navigator app.

Want to disembark first? Carry your own bag.

You don’t want to sour a wonderful vacation with a never-ending line simply to exit the ship. Instead of leaving your luggage out the night before, carry it off the ship yourself and arrive at your final destination without having to wait in lengthy port queues.

Everything we know about Disney Treasure, coming to Disney Cruise Line in 2024

Summer Hull

After a 10-year hiatus in expanding the fleet, Disney Cruise Line has been busy in recent years.

Disney Wish joined the cruise line in the summer of 2022, ushering in an all-new Triton class of three ships that will join the original Disney Magic , Disney Wonder , Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Up next is Disney Treasure, which will debut in December 2024. From new restaurants and bars to announced itineraries, here's everything we know so far about Disney Treasure.

The theme of the Disney Treasure cruise ship

Disney Treasure will share much of its footprint and layout with Disney Wish. However, it will have a distinct look that appears to be less bright-and-airy "fairy tale" than we saw on Wish and more "mysterious adventure."

Based on renderings, Disney Treasure will feature a Grand Hall that leans into a palette of deep blue, turquoise and gold, with a design inspired by gilded palaces from faraway places such as Asia and Africa — including the fictitious city of Agrabah from Disney's "Aladdin."

disney cruise line facts

Fittingly, the statue in the Grand Hall will feature Jasmine, Aladdin and Magic Carpet ready to go on an adventure, which is the theme of this next ship.

Captain Minnie will also wear a special adventure-seeking outfit while on board Disney Treasure. She will appear on the ship's bow, and out on the stern, the adventurous duo of Peter Pan and Captain Hook will sail along wherever Disney Treasure may take them.

Disney Treasure cabins

Disney Treasure will have 1,256 cabins and suites ranging from interior cabins to a two-story funnel suite. All of them will continue the theme of adventure told through Disney stories and places. Some of the movies that will be integrated into the interior, ocean-view and verandah cabins are "Aladdin," "Pocahontas," "Finding Nemo," "Up," "Luca" and "Encanto."

The Concierge Suites, specifically, will include nods to "The Lion King," while the four Royal Suites pay homage to the tigers found in "The Jungle Book" and "Aladdin."

The signature suite on the ship will be the two-story Tomorrow Tower Suite. Disney Wish introduced the concept of a nearly 2,000-square-foot, multiroom suite in the ship's faux funnel. While its Tower Suite was themed to "Moana," Disney Treasure's version will be inspired by Epcot and feature a futuristic design. The Tomorrow Tower Suite can sleep up to eight guests.

Disney Treasure restaurants

Each Disney ship has three included restaurants that guests and their dining team rotate through each night in either an early or late dinner seating. On Disney Treasure, one restaurant will be new to the fleet and two will return from Disney Wish, but with a slightly different spin.

Plaza de Coco

The all-new restaurant found only on Disney Treasure will be Plaza de Coco, a Mexican restaurant that is set after the events of the "Coco" movie. Much like in the "Frozen"-themed space that it is replacing from Disney Wish, this is a "dinner in the round" concept with music, dancing and characters from the "Coco" film performing on stage and making their way around the room during dinner.

As with all the restaurants on Treasure, guests will be scheduled to dine here at least twice, so Plaza de Coco will offer two unique shows.

disney cruise line facts

Worlds of Marvel

Like on Disney Wish, Disney Treasure passengers will enjoy the Worlds of Marvel restaurant . Due to Treasure's longer itineraries, a new, second show will be added to the Worlds of Marvel lineup. Disney has not yet shared what that show will entail, other than teasing that Nick Fury, the founder of the Avengers, has the information listed as top-secret.

"Quantum Encounter," the dinner show on Disney Wish, will also be on Disney Treasure, though in a slightly updated way.

disney cruise line facts

Another Disney Wish restaurant that will be repeated on Disney Treasure is 1923, a California-themed restaurant that is named after the year that the Walt Disney Company was founded. 1923 is adorned with props, art and decor from Disney's decades of storytelling, and on Disney Treasure, that memorabilia will lean heavily into Disney's more adventurous films and stories.

disney cruise line facts

Jumbeaux's Sweets

Jumbeaux's Sweets is a new ice cream parlor and candy shop debuting on Treasure. It's inspired by Jumbeaux's Cafe in the movie "Zootopia," and the space will include statues of Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

disney cruise line facts

Adults-only restaurants

Palo Steakhouse, Enchante and The Rose, a bar located at the entrance to both, will be found on Disney Treasure as they are on Disney Wish. They will be available for guests ages 18 and up for an additional fee, which I'd argue is some of the best money you can spend at sea , given how enjoyable the meals are.

disney cruise line facts

Not just for grownups but also returning from Disney Wish is the ship's fast-casual, upper-deck Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods.

Disney Treasure bars

Skipper society.

Disney Cruise Line is doing something a bit different with its newest ship, and that's theming onboard spaces to park attractions, not just Disney characters and movies. This concept is evident in the new Skipper Society bar on Disney Treasure.

Located where The Bayou is on Wish, Skipper Society is inspired by Disney's Jungle Cruise ride and its wisecracking skippers. Here, guests will find a menu of themed cocktails and light snacks, such as waffles.

disney cruise line facts

Periscope Pub

A second new bar is Periscope Pub, inspired by Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas" (and Disney's 1954 movie version of the book and theme park attraction). It will replace Wish's Keg & Compass as Disney Treasure's sports bar. The bar is designed to look like the Nautilus submarine from the story, complete with a giant periscope, porthole windows and a ceiling designed to look like you're underwater. Watch out for the giant squid below!

disney cruise line facts

The Haunted Mansion Parlor

Disney will replace the popular "Star Wars"-themed Hyperspace Lounge , which debuted on Disney Wish, with the Haunted Mansion Parlor on Disney Treasure. This spooky watering hole is inspired by the creepy atmosphere and happy haunts of the Haunted Mansion park attraction.

The bar will be designed to resemble a first-class drawing room on a classic oceanliner that's been taken into the ghostly realm. Guests can indulge in specialty cocktails (including spirit-free versions) with ghostly messages and ghoulish embellishments (gummy eyeballs, anyone?). They can also spot homages to the original park attraction and its cast of ghostly characters, as well as become acquainted with new seafaring haunts.

Passengers enamored with the Haunted Mansion Parlor will find themed souvenirs in the ship's onboard shops, so they can take home a mirror full of hitchhiking ghosts or a clock that strikes the 13th hour to start up some ghoulish revelry.

Disney Treasure activities

Broadway-style shows.

Disney Treasure will debut "Disney The Tale of Moana" as its new Broadway-style musical. The show will mark the first time Disney has brought the story of Moana to the stage. The musical will feature popular songs and favorite characters from the animated movie.

"Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure" will be the two returning Broadway-caliber shows running on the ship's main stage, the Walt Disney Theatre.

disney cruise line facts

AquaMouse, Disney's water ride that debuted on Disney Wish, will also be a signature attraction on Disney Treasure. As on Wish, riders will enjoy an animated adventure with Disney characters before they start twisting and turning around the ship. Treasure will add a third, new show to the rotation of animated shorts, along with the two from Wish.

Called "Curse of the Golden Egg," the animation will follow Mickey and Minnie as they search for lost treasure inside an ancient temple. This new show will eventually be added to the AquaMouse rotation on Disney Wish.

The "Lion King"-themed Sarabi will be the ship's two-story, multipurpose entertainment zone (replacing Luna from Disney Wish).

When will Disney Treasure set sail?

Disney has announced that the maiden voyage for Disney Treasure will be Dec. 21, 2024, on a seven-night sailing from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), Florida. It will visit Tortola, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay (Disney's private island), with three sea days to rest up from your adventures ashore.

The ship will sail weeklong Caribbean cruises throughout its maiden season. Most of the ship's Eastern Caribbean itineraries will include the same ports, but a few swap out St. Thomas for San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Disney Treasure will also have seven-night Western Caribbean sailings that include ports of call in Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman; Falmouth, Jamaica; and Castaway Cay with two sea days.

disney cruise line facts

This is different from the itineraries on Disney Wish, which are three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. The longer itineraries will give guests more time to enjoy the ship, so Disney has to create more experiences to keep them entertained.

Bookings on Disney Treasure open to Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club members Sept. 12 and to the general public Sept. 20. We expect the early sailings on Treasure to sell out almost immediately.

How much does it cost to sail on Disney Treasure?

disney cruise line facts

If you want to sail on the maiden voyage of Disney Treasure, for two guests, the price starts at $8,773 for an inside cabin and $11,279 for a balcony cabin. For a family of four, those prices increase to $14,088 and $16,796, respectively.

But don't despair if that's out of range, as there are much less expensive ways to sail on Disney Treasure — though with only weeklong cruises on offer, there are no bargain basement prices to be found. Outside of the maiden voyages, Disney Treasure inside-cabin fares start at $3,845 for double occupancy or $6,271 for a family of four. Verandah cabins start at close to $8,000 for a family, and concierge cabins start around $15,000.

The lowest prices will be found on off-peak sailing dates, outside of popular school vacation times.

Bottom line

disney cruise line facts

Since 2012, Disney Cruise Line has operated a fleet of four ships, but 2022 marked the start of a period of rapid growth for the line. It welcomed Disney Wish in 2022 and will debut Disney Treasure in late 2024 and the third Triton-class ship in 2025.

Disney also made a surprise purchase of one of the world's largest cruise ships. That vessel will join the fleet and operate out of Singapore beginning in 2025 .

Additionally, the cruise line has added a new highest tier, Pearl, in its Castaway Club elite status program to mark Disney's 25th year of cruise operations, and will add Lighthouse Point as another private Bahamian beach destination in summer 2024.

It's an exciting time to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. Stay tuned for more information about Disney Treasure as additional details are released leading up to the Dec. 21, 2024, maiden voyage.

Disney Cruise Line Ships

When Disney Cruise Line entered the cruise business in 1998, they made cruising a genuine “family” experience. Until that point, most cruise lines focused mostly on adults, with very little consideration (in services or offerings) given to younger family members. The Disney Magic launched in July of 1998 and redefined the cruise industry and its impact over the years has been evident.

For example, DCL was the first cruise line to offer a majority of balcony  staterooms  – something that has now become commonplace on new ships. Disney’s staterooms were also substantially larger than on most ships at that time – also a trend the industry has adopted. They were the first cruise line to include a bathtub in almost every stateroom (a necessity when traveling with young children).

disney cruise line facts

And while we’re on the subject of children, Disney built its cruise ships with kids in mind  – from the “it’s a small world” Nurseries (for toddlers) to the Oceaneer Club (for kids 3-7), Oceaneer Lab (kids 8-12), Edge (tweens 11-14) and Vibe – the ‘teens only’ hangouts, a Disney cruise has the younger set fully covered. The industry followed suit with newer ships on cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, trying to ‘up the ante’ regarding kid-specific areas. The fact is that in the family market, anyone else is simply vying for second place.

Your favorite Disney Characters will appear throughout the entire cruise; even the Disney Cruise ship’s horn gets in the spirit. Almost everything is included on the Disney Cruise Line: meals, entertainment, snacks, and room service. They’ve thought of it all when it comes to experiencing a cruise with those special Disney touches.

DISNEY CRUISE LINE’S NEW SHIPS

In 2017, Disney Cruise Line announced that they were adding three new ships to their fleet. The new vessels will be the same size, roughly 135,000 gross tons, hosting around 1,250 guest staterooms. These new ships are powered by “clean-burning liquefied natural gas,” but size and fuel are where the similarities end. Each vessel will have individual one-of-a-kind experiences.

The first of the new “Wish” class of ships was the Disney Wish. The second will be the Disney Treasure, which will welcome guests in December 2024. The third is the Disney Destiny, which will launch in 2025. The Disney Adventure is being redone to serve the Singapore market—a launch timeframe has not been announced.

DISNEY DREAM

The Disney Dream set sail on her maiden voyage on January 26, 2011. The Disney Dream is 40% larger than the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, with two additional decks and 1,250 staterooms. Each Inside stateroom has a “virtual” porthole showing rolling waves and Disney characters swimming by all in HD. One of the most popular features is the first-ever water roller coaster at sea – the Aqua Duck is 250 yards of transparent tubing that sends guests soaring over the top decks and at one point – over the ocean!

The Disney Dream offers the latest designs in contemporary staterooms, elegant restaurants, and fabulous entertainment. In addition to the kids’ clubs, there are nightclubs and lounges, as well as theaters for movies and live shows.

Set sail aboard the Disney Dream for ports of call in the Bahamas and Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island). The Dream’s shorter Disney cruises are a particularly good choice for those cruising for the first time. Many guests are concerned about how well they will fare at sea. These shorter cruises give them a chance to experience a Disney Cruise vacation and often lead to a “repeat” cruise on a longer itinerary. Click Here for more information on the Disney Dream

DISNEY FANTASY

The Disney Fantasy is the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and sailed her maiden voyage on March 31, 2012. A sister ship to the Disney Dream, the Disney Fantasy features an AquaDuck water coaster, magical children’s areas, world-class entertainment, delightful dining, retreats for adults, and immersive experiences for guests of all ages with beloved Disney stories and characters. This massive ship features 14 decks and has 1,250 staterooms. As guests have come to expect from Disney Cruise Line, the newest ship combines state-of-the-art technology with the elegance and grandeur of old-time ocean liners. Every Disney Cruise Line ship has a signature character; the Fantasy is no different. The ship’s atrium is home to a bronze statue of Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse. Keeping in line with the vintage travel theme seen around the ship, Minnie is dressed in fashions from the 1920s and 30s, complete with a parasol and steamer trunk.

Top 20 Disney Cruise Line Facts

A Disney Cruise is a special kind of Disney vacation. Many people love visiting the parks, but to essentially live Disney for a few days or even a couple weeks is a fun and unique experience.

There are four ships in the DCL fleet including the Fantasy and the Dream; and the Wonder and the Magic which are sister ships, respectively.

Let’s take a look at some interesting Disney Cruise Line facts!

1. Live Theaters

The Walt Disney Theatre on the Fantasy and the Dream spans two decks and can seat 1,340 guests. The same theatre on the Magic and Wonder seats 977 people. These theaters are used for live, original productions.

2. Movie Theaters

DCL is the only cruise line to show feature films on the same day that they are released in the theaters. They are shown in the Buena Vista Theatre, which has 3D capabilities. On the Magic and Wonder, this theater can seat 278 people. The Fantasy and Dream can hold 399 guests.

3. Lots of Captains

Disney Cruises have four captains: the ship’s captain (he does all the driving!), Captain Mickey, Captain Hook, and Captain Jack Sparrow. Hopefully there aren’t any power struggles on board!

4. Environmentally Conscious

Disney saves 22.3 billion gallons of water per year by collecting the condensation from the air-conditioning units and using this water to wash the decks of the ship.

5. Whistle while you work

The DCL ships have Disney details everywhere including in the ship’s whistle. As you’re sailing away from port, they all play the first seven notes of “When you Wish Upon a Star.” The Fantasy even plays several other songs including “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s life for me)”, “It’s a Small World”, “Be Our Guest”, and “A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes.”

6. Longer than Main Street USA

All of the Disney cruise ships are easily longer than Main Street USA in Magic Kingdom . With Main Street USA being just 966 feet long, The Disney Wonder and Disney Magic, which are both 984 feet long, would stretch into the hub.

The cruise ships are long!

7. Longer than the Eiffel Tower

The Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream would knock over the castle at an astonishing 1,115 feet long! They’re both longer than the Eiffel Tower and New York City’s Chrysler Building are tall.

8. Patented Colors

Disney likes to challenge the norm and they sure did with their lifeboats. Regulation required lifeboats to be orange, but Disney wanted theirs to be yellow like Mickey’s shoes. Disney eventually won, and Yellow Pantone 99 is a patented color that is only allowed to be used by Disney.

9. Anchors Away

In order to hold down such a huge ship, the anchor must be pretty big too, and in fact it is. At 28,200 pounds, the anchors weigh more than the weight of three elephants.

10. Mickey Inspired

The color of the ships was inspired by Mickey Mouse himself. The white structure and the black hull represent his body. The big red stacks are his two buttons, and the yellow lifeboats are his shoes.  Isn’t that cool?

11. Lobby Characters

Each ship has its own character in the main lobby. On The Fantasy, Minnie welcomes guests aboard, and Admiral Donald welcomes guests on The Dream.

12. Take a bow

Each ship also has a different bow. On The Magic, Sorcerer Mickey leads the boat ahead. On the Wonder, it’s Steamboat Willie.

13. Impressive Chandelier

Disney’s Fantasy has an impressive chandelier in the main entrance hall. It’s made up of 60,000 Swarovski crystals adorned with lights around the top that resemble peacock feathers. It’s more than 10 feet around and can perform 30 unique lighting shows. It can even drop confetti for special occasions!

14. Diverse Cast Members

There are a ton of Cast Members on board (more on this next). In fact, they represent over 80 different nationalities!

15. A Good Ratio

Interestingly, there is approximately one Cast Member for every three guests. On the Disney Wonder and Magic, that’s about 950 crew members. That’s why Disney Cruise Line has such great customer service!

16. A Room with a View

If you’re sailing on the Disney cruise ships, you have a pretty good chance of getting a room with a view of the ocean. On the Fantasy and Dream, 88% of the staterooms face the ocean. On the Wonder and Magic, it’s 70%. That’s not too bad!

17. Italian Inspirations

The Magic and the Wonder originated in Italy , so the food and décor give a nod to that country. Palo Restaurant is a well-known table-service restaurant on the ships, and it’s named for the famous poles that line the Venetian canals.

18. That’s a lot of liquid

On a seven-day cruise aboard the Magic, guests consume approximately 2700 bottles of wine and champagne, 57,000 cups of coffee, and over 12,000 bottles or cans of beer. They also eat 10,000 pounds of chicken!

19. Heated Pools

Most of the time, the pools don’t need to be heated, but if the outside temperature drops below 75°, the pools heat up so it’s always comfortable for swimming.

20. Private Island

Disney owns a private island in the Bahamas called Castaway Cay. Bahamian and Caribbean cruises stop here during their cruise, and around 60 Cast Members who live and work full-time on the island welcome them.

Disney Cruise Line Fun Facts

disney cruise line facts

Since first setting sail in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has provided a quintessential family cruise vacation experience that combines the magic of Disney with the thrill of exploring different parts of the world. Guests step aboard majestic and beautiful ocean liners to enjoy legendary Disney entertainment, exquisite dining, spacious and well-appointed staterooms, and magnificent public spaces. Learn about some fun facts about Disney Cruise Line below!

Uniquely Disney

  • The Disney ships are painted in Mickey Mouse-inspired colors – black hull, white superstructure, yellow trim and two giant red funnels, each with the Disney Cruise Line Mickey Mouse logo.
  • Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line to have yellow lifeboats, instead of the traditional regulation orange. Disney was granted special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to paint the lifeboats yellow, to keep with the special color theming of the ship.
  • The Disney Magic was built in two halves… one hundred miles apart! Part of the ship was constructed in Ancona, Italy then towed 100 miles to meet the stern in Marghera (just outside Venice) to be perfectly joined and welded together.
  • Disney Cruise Line ships use the iconic first seven notes of the “When You Wish Upon a Star” song melody as their horn signals.
  • Disney ships are the only cruise ships to have five captains – the ship’s captain, Captain Mickey, Captain Minnie, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow.
  • Measuring 964 feet in length, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are each longer than Main Street U.S.A at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. At 1,115 feet, the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and longer than the height of New York City’s famous Chrysler Building.
  • The anchor on the Disney Magic weighs 28,200 pounds – about the same as three full-grown elephants.
  • On a special night aboard most Disney cruises, the “Pirates IN the Caribbean” deck party features a spectacular pyrotechnics performance – fireworks at sea like only Disney can do!

Guest Experience

  • Eighty-eight percent of the staterooms on the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream and more than 70 percent of staterooms on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have ocean views. Of those, nearly 90 percent and 60 percent, respectively, have private verandahs.
  • In a cruise industry first, most staterooms on Disney ships feature a split “bath-and-a-half” design, providing families the added convenience of a sink and tub/shower in one room and a sink and toilet in a separate room.
  • Onboard both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, there are about 950 crew members representing more than 86 different nationalities. That is approximately one crew member for every three guests.
  • Beef – 5,000 pounds
  • Chicken – 10,000 pounds
  • Salmon – 1,200 pounds
  • Shrimp – 1,300 pounds
  • Lobster Tail – 1,000 pounds
  • Melon – 15,000 pounds
  • Pineapple – 4,500 pounds
  • Eggs – 71,500
  • Coffee – 57,820 cups
  • Soda – 3,125 gallons
  • Beer – 12,385 bottles/cans
  • Wine and Champagne – 2,700 bottles
  • Disney Cruise Line dining room Cast members represent, on average, 86 different nationalities.
  • The décor and food of the Palo restaurant are inspired by Italy, the birthplace of both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.
  • Palo takes its name from the poles that line the canals of Venice. Palo’s extensive reserve wine list features selections that hail from some of the most mature vineyards in the world and highlight some of the greatest Super Tuscans like Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Tignanello.

Onboard Features

  • The Disney Magic and Disney Dream interior is in the art deco style, characterized by geometric designs and bold, solid colors. The interior on the Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy is in the art nouveau style, which features organic influences and curved patterns.
  • Every Disney Cruise Line ship has an atrium lobby statue celebrating a classic Disney character. Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse, dressed in vintage fashion with a parasol and steamer luggage, graces the Disney Fantasy and Admiral Donald strikes a pose on the Disney Dream. They are the subject of as many memorable vacation photos as their counterparts: Mickey at the helm (Disney Magic) and Ariel sitting pretty (Disney Wonder).
  • The décor of the Buena Vista Theatre was designed to emulate the elegant movie houses of the 1920s and 1930s, the period when Walt Disney was producing the first Mickey Mouse animated films.
  • The main showplace for entertainment, the Walt Disney Theatre spans three decks and can seat 977 guests onboard the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder and 1,340 guests on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
  • A leader in family entertainment, Disney is the only cruise line to first-run feature films, including films in 3- D, with movies premiering at sea on the same day that they are released on land.
  • With ships purpose built for family cruising, Disney cruise ships boast nearly an entire deck of space dedicated to age-specific children’s activities.
  • Don’t worry about getting a chill! The swimming pools on Disney ships are heated when the water temperature drops below 75 degrees.
  • Stay connected, even at sea! Disney ships feature Wi-Fi service in staterooms and public spaces, allowing guests to surf the web at sea from their wireless-enabled device.

Castaway Cay

  • Castaway Cay was the first private island in the cruise industry where the ship docks alongside so guests do not have to tender to land.
  • Guests can mail a special souvenir message to family and friends back home by using the Castaway Cay Post Office.
  • Water is procured in Port Canaveral and delivered to Castaway Cay by the ships to an 80,000 gallon fresh water storage tank on the island.
  • Feels like home? Approximately 60 Disney Cruise Line crew members live and work full-time on Castaway Cay.

Environmental Programs

  • Each Disney ship has an onboard Environmental Officer dedicated to overseeing all environmental systems and procedures, along with shipboard recycling, waste minimization and water reclamation efforts.
  • Condensation from the shipboard air conditioning units is collected and re-used to wash the decks, saving more than 30 million gallons of water each year.
  • Disney Cruise Line made history by being the first cruise line to utilize an innovative hull coating that is both 100 percent non-toxic to the marine environment, and effective in increasing fuel efficiency. The coating helps reduce the ships’ surface resistance in the water, decreasing the need for propulsion power as the ship glides through the sea.
  • More than 1,000 gallons of used cooking oil from shipboard galleys is offloaded and recycled in ports of call around the world each week. Through a unique partnership with Bahamas Waste Management (BWM) in Nassau, the used cooking oil is being converted into biodiesel fuel used to power a local fleet of BWM vehicles.
  • Shipboard recycling systems help divert more than than 325 tons of aluminum, plastics, paper and non-traditional recyclables from conventional waste streams each year. That’s the equivalent of over 54 school buses or 24 humpback whales.
  • Disney Cruise Line and Disney Animal Programs have partnered with local non-profit organizations, Disney researchers and educators in a multi-year project to restore the health of the coral reefs around Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, and throughout The Bahamas. Researchers are taking long-spined sea urchins that are native to the area and translocating them to coral reefs endangered by algae overgrowth. The sea urchins graze on algae similar to a lawnmower keeping the grass short.

You’ll have the same waiter throughout your voyage

On Holland America Line, sailors will dine at the same table with the same waiter in Main Dining throughout the voyage. Headed to foreign places, it’s nice to have a familiar face to always ask about your day along with telling you the night’s menu specials.

Disney Cruise Line does the same — with the waiters traveling with the guests to different restaurants on the ship. Planning ahead is the move as popular restaurants may get booked. Throughout the expedition, staff remembers will remember your name and what you like to drink which will make your day that much better.

With streaming business turning around, is disney stock attractive at $105.

Disney posted a mixed set of Q2 FY’24 results, with revenue growing just about 1% year-over-year to $22.08 billion, falling slightly short of estimates, although earnings were better than anticipated at $1.21 per share as the losses from the streaming business narrowed. However, Disney stock dropped by close to 10% in Tuesday’s trading, as the third-quarter outlook for its experiences segment was weaker than expected.

Disney’s theme park business has been driving its top line for several quarters now, as the core entertainment business faces headwinds. Experiences revenue rose by 10% year-over-year in Q2 to $8.4 billion, led by stronger guest spending in the U.S. theme parks and resorts, growth at the Disney Cruise Line operations, and higher attendance in the company’s Hong Kong parks. However, the outlook for the next quarter was lackluster, as the company expects higher expenses and a normalization in attendance following the surge in demand post-Covid-19.

Disney’s linear TV business saw some headwinds over Q2, amid lower advertising and weaker affiliate revenues in the domestic market. Overall Linear Networks sales were down 9% to $2.76 billion. However, Disney’s streaming business is faring much better, with streaming applications Disney+ and Hulu becoming profitable in the quarter for the first time led by a higher number of Disney+ subscribers and rising average per user revenues. Disney+ core subscribers rose by more than 6 million in the second quarter while total streaming revenue was up 13% to $5.64 billion, with operating income coming in at $47 million compared to a loss of $587 million in the year-ago period.

DIS stock has suffered a sharp decline of 40% from levels of $180 in early January 2021 to around $105 now, vs. an increase of about 40% for the S&P 500 over this roughly 3-year period. Notably, DIS stock has underperformed the broader market in each of the last 3 years. Returns for the stock were -15% in 2021, -44% in 2022, and 4% in 2023. In comparison, returns for the S&P 500 have been 27% in 2021, -19% in 2022, and 24% in 2023 - indicating that DIS underperformed the S&P in 2021, 2022, and 2023. In fact, consistently beating the S&P 500 - in good times and bad - has been difficult over recent years for individual stocks; for heavyweights in the Communication Services sector including GOOG, META, and NFLX, and even for the mega-cap stars TSLA, MSFT, and AMZN.

In contrast, the Trefis High Quality Portfolio , with a collection of 30 stocks, has outperformed the S&P 500 each year over the same period. Why is that? As a group, HQ Portfolio stocks provided better returns with less risk versus the benchmark index; less of a roller-coaster ride as evident in HQ Portfolio performance metrics .

Given the current uncertain macroeconomic environment with high oil prices and elevated interest rates, could DIS face a similar situation as it did in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and underperform the S&P over the next 12 months - or will it see a recovery?

So, is Disney stock undervalued in the current environment? Despite concerns in the streaming and media operations, we remain positive on Disney stock for a couple of reasons. Disney is looking to unlock more value by restructuring its business while cutting costs to bolster profitability. Disney stock also remains down by over 45% from the highs seen in 2021 and trades at just about 23x forward earnings. We value Disney stock at about $137 per share, which is about 30% ahead of the current market price. See our analysis of Disney’s valuation for a closer look at what’s driving our price estimate for Disney. Also, see our analysis of Disney revenue for a closer look at the company’s key revenue streams and how they have been trending.

Here are more Disney Wish ship facts.  The Disney ships are painted in Mickey Mouse-inspired colors – black hull, white superstructure, yellow trim and two giant red funnels, each with the Disney Cruise Line Mickey Mouse logo.

Disney Cruise Line was the first cruise line to have yellow lifeboats, instead of the traditional regulation orange. Disney was granted special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to paint the lifeboats yellow, to keep with the special color theming of the ship.

Disney ships are the only cruise ships to have four captains – the ship’s captain, Captain Minnie, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow.  Disney Wish is the first Disney cruise ship to have Minnie as her captain.

Offer free soft drinks any time of day or night, with a free 24/7 beverage station offering sodas, coffee, tea and water.

In a cruise industry first, most staterooms on Disney ships feature a split “bath-and-a-half” design, providing families the added convenience of a sink and tub/shower in one room and a sink and toilet in a separate room.

The ship’s horn on the Disney Wish is a prominent element of the “Sailing Away” deck party at the start of every cruise and is quite the musical talent. The horns are able to sound the first musical line of “When You Wish Upon a Star” as well as the second line of the song (“makes no difference who you are”) plus, several measures of “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me),” “It’s a Small World,” “Be Our Guest,” “Hi Diddle Dee Dee (An Actor’s Life for Me)” and “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

The character on the Disney Wish’s stern is Repunzel.  Every Disney Cruise Line ship has an atrium lobby statue celebrating a classic Disney character. The Disney Wish’s bronze-cast pièce de résistance is Cinderella.

The water coaster on the Disney Wish is a first-ever attraction at sea.  It is 760-feet long and the ride is 2+minutes with water effects, lighting effects with music track and show scenes.  Walt Disney Imagineers elevated the AquaMouse water coaster on the Disney Wish in order to maximize space on the deck. And with the AquaMouse in place, they had room for their imaginations to concoct yet another family activity on the Disney Wish – Toy Story Splash Zone play area for younger kids.  This area have a water slide themed to Toy Story called “Slideasaurus Rex”.

At 1,119 feet, the Disney Wish is longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris (1,063 feet) and longer than the height of New York City’s famous Chrysler Building (1,047 feet).

A leader in family entertainment, Disney is the only cruise line to first-run feature films, including films in 3-D, with movies premiering at sea on the same day that they are released on land.
