"The home of Lord Krishna"

Dwarka tourism.

Located on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, Dwarka is believed to be the capital city of Lord Krishna's kingdom. Known as Devbhoomi Dwarka , Dwarka boasts of being the only city that is a part of both Char Dham (four principal holy places) and also Sapta Puris (seven sacred cities) mentioned in the Hindu religion. Dwarka was a part of the ancient kingdom of Krishna and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is also located in Dwarka. The beachside and the seashores are an added tourist attraction.

Legend has it that the city was once engulfed by the sea and recent excavations reveal that a city did exist here. The name Dwarka translates to dwar meaning 'door' and ka meaning 'moksha' meaning the ‘door to salvation.

Dwarka Travel Guide

Explore the city of Dwarka in Gujarat, supposedly even older than the Egyptian and Chinese civilizations and the Harappan civilization. Moreover, the ancient city of Dwarka has come a long way from 5,000 years ago (approx.), according to the legends that say it was the legendary capital of Lord Krishna’s adulthood kingdom. But that is not the only reason why Dwarka is special for tourists.

Also, this ancient city maintains that nurturing spirit to this day and draws tourists in droves. One of the top reasons behind such hype is that Dwarka is one of the seven ancient cities (Sapta Puri) and constitutes one of the essential attractions of the Bada Char Dham Yatra. Above all, spiritual vibes beacon Sanatan Dharm pilgrims at every nook and corner of the Dwarka.

Here’s a meticulously crafted Dwarka tourism guide for you.

Places to visit in Dwarka

Dwarka is famous for its beaches, Lighthouse, Dwarkadhish Temple, and Rukmini Mandir . Whereas Bet Dwarka, off the coast around 30 km (approx.), is where Lord Krishna resided with his queens. Tourists can explore Bett Island via ferry or boat, the only medium for Yadava clans to visit Shri Krishna’s family. Check out the top places to visit in Dwarka:

  • Dwarkadhish Temple
  • Beyt Dwarka
  • Rukshmani Devi Temple
  • Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple
  • Sudama Setu
  • Dwarka Beach & Lighthouse

Things to do in Dwarka

Dwarka is also among many other sacred shrines for Hindus in India. There are a lot of temples to visit when you are in Dwarka, but apart from that, there are many other things to do in Dwarka, Gujarat. The city is also associated with the Mahabharata; hence, it has a lot of significance.

  • Watch the ancient tradition in Tulabhara
  • Ride a camel at the Gomti River
  • Ride a tuk-tuk in Chhakda
  • Shop for souvenirs at Dwarkadhish Market
  • Take a ferry to Bet Dwarka

Best time to visit Dwarka

The best times to visit Dwarka are August, September, October, November, December, January, February, and March. November to February is the most suitable time to visit Dwarka because the temperature is not warm for sightseeing. Skipping a weekend trip to Dwarka from March to June would be best. This is because the temperature shoots up to 40°C (approx.) with humidity. On a brighter note, the advent of July relieves the oppressive summer heat, but the sea is not calm during the monsoon in Dwarka.

How to reach Dwarka

Getting to Dwarka from anywhere across India comes in three ways: airways, railways, and roadways. Each of the ways to get to Dwaraka has its perks. For instance, air travel to Dwarka is quick from long-distance locations like Chennai, Bangalore, and Goa but expensive. On the contrary, the railway journey is budget-friendly but takes longer from faraway destinations. While the road journey to Dwarka is impressive for the Gujaratis from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Vadodara, it is also tiring for the tourists arriving there from long-distance locations.

Accommodations in Dwarka

For an enjoyable stay in the city, consider booking a hotel that offers scenic views of the unspoiled Dwarka beach. Many affordable and moderately priced hotels and guesthouses are located near the Shree Dwarkadhish temple. These options provide comfortable rooms, great amenities, and friendly service. Conveniently situated near the bus and train stations, these hotels are easily accessible. Additionally, some upscale hotels and heritage resorts are available to meet the needs of luxury travelers in neighborhoods near the temple.

Where to eat in Dwarka?

Understand that cuisine in Dwarka is not diverse because it is one of the 4 abodes of the Bada Char Dham Yatra. In short, non-vegetarian food is not encouraged in Dwarka. On the brighter side, restaurants and street hawkers serve local food in Dwarka, including native Gujarati seasonings like red chilies, turmeric, and pounded red chilies.

Moreover, the staple food of Dwarka is more of the famous food of Gujarat, like Thepla, Khandvi, Khaman Dhokla, Muthia, and Fafda Jalebi. Last but not least, the best places to eat in Dwarka are inside luxury resorts and hotels.

How to get around in Dwarka?

The city is well-connected to the government bus system. Autos are an easier option, though fixing a rate before hiring one is a good idea. Cycle rickshaws are excellent for reaching places in close proximity.
