SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

The soul of the American West... Naturally inspiring, the landscapes of the American West challenge the imagination with jaw-dropping canyons, gurgling mud pots, geysers, and wide-open spaces... while towering mountains are a study in contrast, harboring wildlife and man-made wonders.

A day at ta guest ranch, a taste of the cowboy life at a working wyoming ranch.

Make your way through Wyoming's breathtaking Bighorn Mountains to an authentic (and fun) western ranch experience at TA Guest Ranch in Buffalo. Homesteaded in 1884, the ranch was once the site of a shootout during the infamous Johnson County War that pitched cowboy against cowboy in these parts in 1892 – you can still see some of the old bullet holes! But today's visit will be a peaceful one… where you can choose to meet a horse whisperer, learn roping techniques from real cowboys, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, or saddle up for a horseback ride... and enjoy a private lunch on the ranch.

A night at the rodeo

Attend the exciting cody nite rodeo (seasonal, june – august).

Way out here in Wyoming, nothing promises more real Western fun than an honest-to-goodness rodeo... especially in a town named for the legendary Wild West showman, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and often called the "Rodeo Capital of the World." Established in 1938 and operating June through August, the Cody Nite Rodeo is the world's longest-running nightly rodeo. Get set for an evening filled with bull riding, saddle bronco riding, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo clowns, and a "calf scramble" for kids 12 and under.

Old Faithful Inn

Stay in a classic national historic landmark in yellowstone national park.

One of the largest log structures in the world, Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1904 of native lodgepole pine – and the epitome of the "National Park Rustic" architectural style – it is set within walking distance of Old Faithful Geyser, just one of Yellowstone's many natural wonders... including geysers, fumaroles and boiling hot springs.

This relatively untamed territory makes you proud of those who had the foresight to set aside the space for National Parks.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Snake River, the journey is roughly 2 hours and requires stepping in and out of an inflatable raft
  • Guided horseback riding on a working cattle ranch, guests are required to show ability to mount/unmount and for safety reasons, a weight restriction of 225 pounds is in place.

There are no elevators at The Ranch at Ucross or at the Holiday Inn® Cody at Buffalo Bill Village, and while none of the planned activities are especially strenuous or difficult, we urge caution when engaging in activities at high elevations. If you have a heart condition or lung ailment, please consult your physician before you book your trip.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The Jackson Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel are all non-smoking hotels and a very large fine will be assessed if it is determined that anyone has smoked while on property.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

The high temperatures in the summer months average 70 to 90°F (21 to 32°C) and the lows average 40 to 60°F (4 to 16°C). The overnight temperatures can drop to the freezing point even during the summer at the highest elevations. Rainfall is light to moderate throughout the region. Salt Lake City receives the least amount of rain with an average of less than 1 in (25 mm) per month during summer; Jackson averages 1.5 in (38 mm) and Rapid City averages 2.5 in (63 mm.)

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

All of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee except for the Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and The Ranch at Ucross.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

The national park lodges do not have televisions or Internet hook-ups, so bring along a good book to read!

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Long pants or jeans (long pants and closed-toed shoes are required for the horseback riding)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment

  • A book or e-reader to read in the evening, or downloaded podcasts or video programs to watch during your free time.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

We had an absolutely fantastic time on our tour with Great Western Expeditions! We were a group of 11 people ranging in age from 10 to 78 and they ... read more did a fantastic job balancing all of our needs. Both Laurie, our guide, and Larry, our driver were so knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. We saw so much in just one day and never had to worry about a thing! They also provided an elevated picnic lunch which was delicious-- we had to eat it on the bus because of rain but they were somehow able to make even that feel special. Thanks so much to Great Western Expeditions for a perfect bucket-list worthy day!

Having her set up the lodging, the itineraries, and just her overall knowledge of where to go and what time to be there was exceptional. I cannot recommend our guide, David Buth, enough! What a terrific person to have led our trip. He was professional, kind, practically a “professor”, and very knowledgeable about everything and everywhere we went. It’s obvious that he enjoys his work and does it very well. He is a true educator, and we were so pleased with his expertise and fun personality. The only thing I didn’t like, was that the first couple days we were in a mini bus that was very uncomfortable to sit in, hard to see out of, and generally not great. Luckily, we were then transferred to an Escalade, which we had been promised and was much more appropriate and so much more comfortable. Thanks again, Theresa and Vince Trujillo

How to See Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone in One Trip

Grand Teton and Yellowstone Itinerary How to Visit Both in One Trip

On October 15, 2022, Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance Road reopened to regular visitor traffic after months of repairs. Closed to most travelers since this summer’s historic floods , the route was one of the last remaining road closures affecting travel in and out of the park. According to the National Park Service , 99 percent of Yellowstone's roads are now “effectively [open].”

Many travelers pivoted their summer travel plans from Yellowstone to Grand Teton National Park in June and July due to the floods—resulting in an influx of visitors to the Teton Range and Jackson Hole . The parks offer very different landscapes and experiences, though, with Yellowstone boasting iconic natural and geologic formations, and Grand Teton home to towering peaks and glistening lakes. Now that Yellowstone is wholly reopened to the public, aside from the usual seasonal road closures , and there's the chance to visit both, the question becomes: Why choose just one?

There’s no better time than to plan a bucket-list trip to northwestern Wyoming to check off two of the country’s most beautiful national parks. (And yes, that includes during the off-season; the coldest months of the year.) Winter temperatures in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) may hover between 0 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, but the wilderness continues to thrive in the season’s serenity and solitude, and is one of the best times to see either park's landscapes come to life.

Whether you’re heading out west in the dead of winter or planning an excursion to the region’s peak summer months, here’s how to experience the peaks, lakes, and lush forests of Jackson as well as the grandeur of Greater Yellowstone—all in one Grand Teton and Yellowstone itinerary. And as an added bonus, we’ve rounded up some luxurious ways to avoid the need to drive between the two (especially in winter when most roads are seasonally impassible), whether you prefer an adrenaline-inducing winter snowmobile expedition or a comfortable private-flight excursion.

Getting there

If you’re going to tackle both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone, the best jumping-off point is Jackson, Wyoming . The Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is located within Grand Teton National Park, and it’s just a 15-minute drive—Uber and Lyft are available—to downtown Jackson. Once there, you’ll find everything you need to begin your journey, including top-tier tour companies, a variety of lodging options, and places to purchase last-minute gear and clothing. For easy access to the best hikes and wildlife watching spots in the park, rent a car.

Where to stay in Jackson Hole

It may not be known as a budget-friendly place, but Jackson does have its share of reasonably priced hotels. For a trip where you’ll spend the majority of your time outside, book a comfortable room (or one of the recently renovated suites) at Mountain Modern , a multi-building boutique design motel within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the town square. Rates start at just over $100 in the offseason, and many of its amenities are specifically curated to aid in guests’ outdoor adventures: self-service laundry, a bike repair station, and dedicated spaces for storing equipment. There are also plenty of luxe options in town, including Hotel Jackson and the Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole .

What to do in Grand Teton National Park

For many, the draw to the American West hinges on seeing wildlife and snow-capped mountains. With its eight 12,000-foot-plus peaks and rich array of native fauna, Grand Teton National Park certainly delivers. If you choose to drive through the park yourself, purchase a pass at Moose Entrance Station , the closest of the three park entrances to Jackson. From here, you’ll head out along the park’s 42-mile Scenic Loop Drive, which is made of the inner road (open between May 1 and October 31) and the outer road of the park. While it would be impossible to traverse every square inch of the 310,000 protected acres in just a few days, these two roads provide access to most of the park’s major highlights.

Photo opportunities abound in and around the Tetons, with the classic shot of T.A Moulton Barn along Mormon Row—a historical district associated with its 1900s farming community—topping the list. Ansel Adams took his famous photograph of the Tetons at Snake River Overlook , and Oxbow Bend is a sight to behold, particularly in the morning when mountain views are reflected in the river.

While Wyoming may be landlocked, Grand Teton National Park is no stranger to water. In fact, it’s home to six morainal lakes at the base of the mountains and over 100 backcountry and alpine lakes. Jenny Lake is widely acknowledged as a focal point of the park. It’s surrounded by hiking trails ( Cascade Canyon is a visitor favorite), and during the warmer months, you can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle across the 12,000-year-old lake.

Keep a keen eye out for elk, moose, bison, and pronghorn as you drive and explore the park, particularly if you venture to Schwabacher Landing or Elk Ranch flats . No matter where you are, be sure to stay at least 25 yards away from wildlife (and 100 yards from bears and wolves). However, if grizzlies, otters, and great grey owls are on your must-see list, your best bet is to go with a wildlife expert or guide who will have a thorough understanding of the best spots and times for possible sightings.

How to travel between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone year-round

With only 31 miles between Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone—linked by John D. Rockefeller, Jr Memorial Parkway—it’s completely possible to see both in one trip. This is no long-weekend trip, though. Ideally, you’ll want to give yourself at least a week, with two travel days, at least two days in Grand Teton National Park, and three days in Yellowstone. If you aren’t interested in driving yourself through both parks (which is not possible during the winter), there are plenty of ways to capitalize on a relatively short period of time in the area: Jackson Hole EcoTour Wildlife Adventures specializes in excursions to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. Their incredibly knowledgeable guides and naturalists are available year-round for half-day, full-day, multi-day, and completely customized tours of the surrounding area. The Yellowstone and Grand Teton Multi-Day Wildlife Tour —which includes wildlife spotting in the Jackson Hole Valley and exploring the hidden gems of the world’s first national park—is available in the spring, summer, and fall and can be extended from two to five days, depending on what you want to see and do.

In order to travel to Yellowstone from December 15 through early March, you’ll need to travel by either snowmobile or snow coach: Scenic Safaris , another Jackson-based tour company, brings guests the 60 miles to Yellowstone’s South gate, where you’ll depart via over-snow transportation and spend a full day covering the areas and points of interest in the park’s lower loop—Old Faithful, Moose Falls, and Lewis Canyon, among others.

Another option, particularly for travelers who may have already explored Yellowstone before, is the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole ’s Day with Wolves Excursion . The hotel recently announced the partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris and Yellowstone Safari Company, offering guests the ability to book a private flight from Teton Village to the northern edge of Yellowstone. After flying over the Tetons and the greater Yellowstone basin, the eight-passenger Pilatus aircraft lands in Livingston, Montana, where an expert naturalist guide leads a day-long immersive learning experience with a chance to see Yellowstone’s gray wolf population (as well as other wildlife in the park). A portion of the $16,000 trip price tag is donated to the Yellowstone Wolf Project and the Environmental Defense Fund .

Other alternatives for travelers looking to see both parks while in the area include horseback riding through Yellowstone Park and Teton Wilderness Area with Wilderness Trails, Inc , a five-day summer bike tour with Trek Travel , and exploring by e-bike.

How to visit Yellowstone after the floods

For a deep dive into what to see in Yellowstone and the best times to visit, check out our guide to experiencing the park in every season . Activities and modes of transport can vary greatly depending on the time of year you’re visiting, whether that's during months when there’s consistent snowfall, spring or fall (when snow can still often be in the forecast), or the summer months that can bring heat advisories and crowds. And whether you want glamping or a luxe resort, there are plenty of places to stay in Yellowstone National Park .

Know before you go to Yellowstone

Be sure to check the National Park Service website for road closures, weather advisories, and any additional alerts before visiting Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park . You can also download the NPS app here for easy access on-the-go.

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Adventure

6 days | follow in the footsteps of cowboys as you explore wyoming’s wild terrain.

SASY - Person viewing the colourful Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

Embark on a discovery of some of the most iconic natural landmarks in the USA. Visit the country’s oldest national park – the immense Yellowstone National Park – where Old Faithful Geyser shoots boiling water to the sky, bubbling hot rivers flow, and herds of bison roam. Spot wildlife like moose, bears and beavers hidden within the Grand Teton Mountain Range and follow along with a real-life wolf tracker who’ll teach you their secret tracking tricks in the wee hours of the morning. In the evenings, unwind like the cowboys used to do, with dinner, drinks and entertainment in the famous frontier town of Jackson, Wyoming.

Trip overview

  • Enjoy three full days exploring Yellowstone National Park, as you explore both the northern loop and the southern loop, witnessing all of the park’s highlights.
  • Explore the stunning scenery of Grand Teton National Park – home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears, as well as pristine lakes and incredible alpine terrain.
  • Meet up with an experienced wolf tracker in the wee hours of the morning for a unique opportunity to search for wolves in their natural habitat in Yellowstone National Park.
  • See Yellowstone’s most iconic sites like the powerful Old Faithful Geyser and the hypnotic Grand Prismatic Spring, then see if you can spot the park’s famous bison herds (from a safe distance, of course).
  • Spend two nights in Jackson – known for its cowboy heritage and culture – and visit the elk antler arch at the town square, surrounded by a mountain range.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, the Grand Canyon Conservancy. Donations help them protect Grand Canyon National Park and support trail restoration, conservation of native plants and wildlife, and educational programs.
  • This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • There are walking opportunities throughout this trip. We recommend you bring good quality walking shoes if you're keen to enjoy a hike - or two!

Welcome to Wyoming! Your adventure begins in the historic town of Jackson, where fur trappers and frontiersmen once gathered. Surrounded by towering mountain ranges and the meandering Snake River, Jackson is your gateway to discovering Yellowstone National Park. You’ll have a group meeting at 6 pm, followed by an optional welcome dinner. After, the evening is all yours to explore the town’s nightlife. Feel free to wander the plaza or maybe head to the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for a drink with your new fellow travellers.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, embark on a day of exploring Grand Teton National Park – one of the most stunning places in Wyoming. The Grand Teton Mountain Range rises above a scene rich with abundant wildlife and pristine lakes. Stop at Jenny Lake and gaze up in awe at the surrounding landscape. Perhaps take the optional boat trip across the lake for more incredible views of the Tetons from the water, or hike to Inspiration Point. Maybe have a picnic, spot a moose or even a grizzly bear and enjoy the serenity of this remarkable place. Other wildlife you might find include elk, beavers and black bears, so keep your eyes peeled! Continue to viewing sites for buffalo and antelope herds along the Gros Ventre River and Antelope Flats, then visit the Mormon Row Historic District to see the iconic Moulton Barn with the Tetons towering behind. For dinner, you'll head out as a group for a western-style chuck wagon dinner at a local restaurant.

This morning, drive from Jackson to Yellowstone National Park – the crown jewel of the American national parks – and spend the day exploring with your leader. Yellowstone is the country’s first national park – a mountain wilderness home to grizzly bears, wolves and herds of buffalo and elk. You’ll take the southern loop today and watch as Old Faithful Geyser sprays over 4000 gallons (14,000 litres) of boiling water into the air. Then, be hypnotised by the startling colours of the Grand Prismatic Spring – you should definitely have your camera handy today! You have three full days to explore the park, which means you can take your time at all the sites and fully immerse yourself in this unique landscape.

  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Yellowstone National Park - Southern Loop Featuring Old Faithful Geyser & Grand Prismatic Spring

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.

Today we will spend a full day exploring Yellowstone National Park. You’ll focus on the northern loop of the park today, which passes by the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone – an icon of the park’s complex and dramatic geological history. Pass the Norris Geyser Basin as well – the hottest and oldest geyser in Yellowstone’s thermal areas – among other sights along the loop. Along the way, look out for abundant wildlife, including birdlife and grazing elk.

  • Yellowstone National Park - Northern Loop Featuring Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone & Norris Geyser Basin

Yellowstone is a huge park and we will cover a lot of ground during our exploration. We'll spend approximately 9-10 hours in the park today, of which you can expect to spend about 3.5 hours in the vehicle.

Wake up super early this morning, ready for a very special last day in Yellowstone National Park – you’ll join a naturalist wildlife guide on a wolf-tracking adventure in a quieter, off-the-beaten-path section of the park. This is an ideal place to look for wolves, as well as lots of other wildlife like bison, elk and bears. High-power binoculars will be provided during the tour, so you have the best shot at glimpsing these elusive beasts. Check out the Mammoth Hot Springs in the park, then continue back to the hotel. Enjoy some time to rest and recharge this afternoon, then head out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant with your group.

Yellowstone & Grand Teton Itinerary for 2, 3, 4, or 5 days (+Info & Tips)

Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are both amazing destinations for outdoor lovers. If you love wildlife, vast landscapes, and incredible natural wonders, then you cannot go wrong with this combo of two of the most popular National Parks in the U.S .

But how to best plan your time and see the best of Yellowstone and Grand Teton in one trip?

In this article, we share the suggested Grand Teton and Yellowstone itinerary for any trip from 2 to 5 days. If you have time for a longer visit, it’s easy to expand on these itineraries as well. Take a look!

Good to know: One day is really too short to see both parks. That’s why our ‘combo’ itineraries foresee at least 2 days for Grand Teton and Yellowstone. So if you only have a day in the area, you’ll have to choose just one park. If you wonder which is better – Grand Teton or Yellowstone, our personal recommendation is to visit Yellowstone. It’s more diverse and the sights are truly unique.

Scenic road in Grand Teton National Park

Where to start your trip: For the sake of simplicity and because this is the most popular option, we assume that you start and end your trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone from the Jackson Hole area. So book a stay in Jackson, WY or Teton Village hotels for the first and the last nights of your trip. But you can easily adapt these itineraries depending on where you are arriving from.

TIP: Using the map below, you can also compare hotels and vacation rentals in the area and find the best deals for your travel dates . The map now shows Jackson accommodations and you can also zoom it out to see other places nearby. Check it out!

These accommodations are for the beginning/end of your trip. In the itinerary below, you’ll find our specific suggestions for where to stay every day during the road trip itself.

Important! This Yellowstone and Grand Teton itinerary is for summer only, when the roads are open (from around mid-May to mid-October). It’s also essential to check road conditions and closures on the official website , to be sure that the roads you are planning to take are open.

Entrance fee.   Yellowstone NP and Grand Teton NP both have an entrance fee. It costs 35 USD for one park, per private vehicle, and is valid for 7 days. So it will cost your family 70 USD to visit both parks. TIP: If you are planning to visit several U.S. National Parks over a period of one year, it’s better to get  America the Beautiful Pass.  It costs 80 USD for the whole family traveling in the same vehicle and is valid in all National Parks and 2,000 federal recreation sites across the United States for 12 months from the month of purchase.

Without a car: Staying in Jackson Hole also makes it possible to visit Grand Teton and Yellowstone with organized tours . In our itineraries below, you can find the best tour recommendations that cover the same places as we describe in the same amount of time. Alternatively, check our detailed guide to the best Yellowstone tours .

TIP: We recommend packing a picnic lunch for every day of your trip. This will give you more flexibility during the day and you’ll be able to explore more without having to waste your time looking for a place to eat.

Without further ado, here are our suggested itineraries for Yellowstone and Grand Teton:

Grand Teton & Yellowstone: 2 Days Itinerary

If you have a total of 2 days for Yellowstone and Grand Teton, we recommend spending a day in each park.

Here is the 2-day organized tour that you could join – it covers the highlights of both parks. And here is what your self-drive Yellowstone Grand Teton road trip itinerary could look like:

Day 1 – Grand Teton National Park

Start your day very early and drive to the Kelly area . One of the main highlights here is the Mormon Row Historic District with its picturesque historic barns and homesteads. Another place not to be missed is the scenic Antelope Flats Road .

This is a beautiful scenic area with amazing views of the entire Teton Range. It’s also one of the best places to see wildlife in Grand Teton. Coming here in the morning will highly increase your chances to see animals as they are most active at dawn and at dusk. If you can’t make it here first thing in the morning, come in the late afternoon!

A must for any Grand Teton visitor is a scenic boat ride on Jenny Lake . The scenery you get to see from the boat is worth a short trip in itself, but we highly recommend to also do some hiking on the other side of the lake. Boats run very frequently and you can easily take another boat back after your hike. Just try to come here early in the morning or it gets crowded!

The easiest and the most popular hike is that to Hidden Falls . This family-friendly walk is just 1.3 miles round trip from the boat. After that, continue to Inspiration Point . This hike is about 2.2 miles round trip and requires some uphill climbing, but the views from the top are truly worth it. Our 5-year-old kids could do this hike without any problems, so it’s really not as difficult as it might look at first sight.

Afterwards, take the boat back to Jenny Lake Visitor Center and explore more of the Grand Teton National Park. Here are some scenic spots that are worth checking out: Jackson Lake , String Lake , Oxbow Bend , and Schwabacher’s Landing .

Mormon Row Historic District in Grand Teton National Park

Accommodation: There are several lodging options between Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Hotels near Moran have the best location for both parks and would fit this itinerary best. We recommend Jenny Lake Lodge , Jackson Lake Lodge , or Headwaters Lodge – all perfectly located for this itinerary. You could stay here for two nights, so also for exploring Yellowstone on the next day.

However, accommodation here is really limited and often booked-up months in advance. In that case, you may have to return to Jackson Hole where you started your trip, stay in Yellowstone , or drive all the way to West Yellowstone where you can find more accommodation options (it’s also closer to Yellowstone for the next day).

Tour suggestion: You can also visit Grand Teton National Park with this organized tour from Jackson Hole . The itinerary of this day tour is very similar to our recommendations above.

Day 2 – Yellowstone Lower Loop

Yellowstone National Park is huge and one day is not even enough to cover all the main landmarks of Yellowstone . However, if you plan well, you can see the most famous places in one day.

With just one day in Yellowstone, we recommend that you focus on the Lower Loop instead of trying to see it all. Even then, your day will be packed and you will only have the time to quickly check out most places.

Here is what your day in Yellowstone could look like:

  • Visit the Old Faithful Area
  • See the Grand Prismatic Spring
  • Visit the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
  • Drive through Hayden Valley (great for wildlife)
  • Stop at West Thumb Geyser Basin at the Yellowstone Lake

MORE DETAILS FOR THIS DAY: One Day in Yellowstone & Best Places to See on Yellowstone South Loop

Accommodation: Same as the previous night or back to Jackson Hole.

Tour suggestion: You can also visit Yellowstone for a day with an organized tour from Jackson Hole .

Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone & Grand Teton Itinerary for 3 Days

If you have three days for Yellowstone and Grand Teton, we recommend spending one day in Grand Teton National Park and two days in Yellowstone. Here is what your trip could look like:

Day 1 – Grand Teton

See all the main highlights of Grand Teton National Park following our suggestions from the first day of the 2-day itinerary above .

Day 2 – Yellowstone West

Arriving from the south, we suggest that you concentrate on the west side of the Yellowstone Grand Loop on this day. So drive through the park all the way from south to the north, on the western side.

Here’s what your day could look like:

  • Visit Old Faithful Geyser and the Upper Geyser Basin.
  • Visit Grand Prismatic Spring and – potentially – hike to the Grand Prismatic Overlook .
  • Explore part of the Norris Geyser Basin.
  • Visit Mammoth Hot Springs.

Accommodation : Stay in Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel (inside the park) or in Gardiner (just outside the park).

Day 3 – Yellowstone North & East

On your second day in Yellowstone, we recommend exploring North Yellowstone and the eastern side of the park . Here’s what your day could look like:

  • Short stop at Undine Falls.
  • Drive through Lamar Valley (wildlife).
  • Short stop at Tower Fall.
  • Drive via Dunraven Pass.
  • Visit the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
  • Drive through Hayden Valley (wildlife).
  • Short stop at Mud Volcano (optional).
  • Yellowstone Lake – West Thumb Geyser Basin.

Accommodation : Drive back to Jackson Hole.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton: 4 Days Itinerary

With four days for Grand Teton and Yellowstone, we recommend spending one day in Grand Teton and three in Yellowstone National Park. With 3 days in Yellowstone, you can devote more time to each of the main areas of the park and explore them deeper.

If you find all the planning overwhelming, you can consider this highly-rated 4-day tour that covers both parks . Alternatively, here is our suggested itinerary for a self-drive Yellowstone and Grand Teton road trip in four days:

See the best places in Grand Teton National Park following our suggestions from day 1 of the 2-day itinerary above .

Day 2 – Yellowstone West Side

  • Visit the Old Faithful and explore the entire Upper Geyser Basin.
  • Visit Grand Prismatic and hike to the overlook
  • Explore both parts of the Norris Geyser Basin

Accommodation : Stay in Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel (inside the park) or in Gardiner (just outside the park). Alternatively, see if you can find accommodation at the Old Faithful Inn or in the town of West Yellowstone , which could both be ok for the next night as well.

Inspiration Point Grand Teton National Park

Day 3 – Yellowstone North Side

  • Undine Falls.
  • Short easy hike to Wraith Falls.
  • Drive to Lamar Valley.
  • Tower Fall.
  • Dunraven Pass.

Accommodation: The best place to stay would be Canyon Lodge . However, if it’s not available (it’s usually booked up a year in advance), it might be better to stay in West Yellowstone or in the above-mentioned Old Faithful area.

Day 4 – Yellowstone East Side

  • Explore the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone River. Visit all the lookout points and do some hiking.
  • Hayden Valley.
  • Mud Volcano area.
  • Storm Point hike at Yellowstone Lake.
  • West Thumb area.

Hayden Valley bison in Yellowstone

5 Days in Yellowstone and Grand Teton

If you have five days for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, you could follow the 4-day itinerary above and add an extra day in Grand Teton. You can add this extra day either at the beginning or at the end of your trip, depending on what works best for you.

Grand Teton National Park has lots of hiking trails . Kayaking or rafting are also popular options. And – if you want to see more wildlife – there are lots of popular wildlife safari tours .

So with an extra day in the park, you could go for a safari ride in the morning and go for a nice hike in the afternoon. For example, the popular Taggart & Bradley Lakes loop hike takes just 2-3 hours (more info here ). Or you could head to one of the lakes for some kayaking. Colter Bay Marina is a good place to rent a kayak.

Otherwise, book one of the scenic rafting trips on the Snake River from Jackson. The river here is not too wild (class 2-3 rapids), but wild enough for a fun adventure. For most tours, kids from 6-7 years old can participate, but there is also a very popular easy rafting tour that can be done with a bit younger kids as well. And if that tour is unavailable, take a look at this easy floating trip on the Snake River .

And – if you are looking for something truly special to end your Yellowstone Grand Teton trip, go for a hot air balloon ride !

Kayaking in Grand Teton National Park

So, these are just some ideas on what your Yellowstone and Grand Teton itinerary could look like. If you have a week for this area, please check our Yellowstone itinerary for even more inspiration on places to see and how to plan your time. Also in Grand Teton and Jackson Hole you can find plenty of things to do (see activities and tours here ).

For practical information and travel tips to the area, please check our Yellowstone travel guide . It contains an overview of all our articles about the area, such as the best time to visit Yellowstone , Yellowstone packing list , or Yellowstone tips that will help you make the most of your trip!

Yellowstone – Grand Teton FAQ

Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are both very different and each is worth a trip. However, if you only have time to visit one park, then definitely go to Yellowstone! With active geysers and colorful geothermal areas, Yellowstone National Park offers a truly unique experience that can’t be compared to any other place on the planet.

Grand Teton and Yellowstone almost border each other. The two parks are connected by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. The distance between the two parks is a bit less than 7 miles, although the parkway itself extends into both parks for a total distance of 27 miles (43 km).

Yes, you can easily drive from Yellowstone to Grand Teton. In summer season, when all the roads are open, simply take US Hwy 191 which stretches through both parks.

If you want to see two parks in one trip – Yellowstone and Grand Teton – two days is an absolute minimum. This will allow you to see just the main highlights of each National Park. We recommend at least 4-6 days in the area: 3-4 days in Yellowstone and 1-2 days in Grand Teton. But you can easily spend a week or two here and you’ll find plenty to do.

The best time to visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks is in summer, from around mid-May to October. That’s when all the roads are open in the area and you can explore both parks to the fullest.

Thursday 22nd of February 2024

Hi! I'm starting to plan a trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone for September 2024, is this too short notice to find close places to stay? I'm getting overwhelmed with the planning and where to stay and for how long...we're thinking of a week long trip to see both parks. This is such an informative post, thank you for putting it together!

Friday 23rd of February 2024

Hi Alex, you just have to check accommodation availability for your travel dates and you'll quickly see what's still possible. The chances of finding something inside the national parks are probably pretty slim by now, unless you are very flexible to adjust your plans if you find a night or two free at some loges. But there should still be plenty of options in the Jackson Hole area as well as West Yellowstone and Gardiner. With a week for two parks, you could spend 2-3 days in Grand Teton and the rest in Yellowstone. How exactly to plan your trip will indeed depend on where you base yourself. So look for hotels first and then make more precise plans based on that. Good luck (and don't wait too long!).

Thursday 13th of July 2023

I happened to stumble across your website and I wish I would've found it years ago. I'll never plan another trip without looking at your website first. Thank you for all this incredibly helpful information!

We plan on staying July 30-August 3 in Yellowstone and August 3-August 6 in Grand Teton. From my understanding, we should stay at separate hotels for both parks because of the distance in between, right? There's not one hotel that's conveniently located in between both places?

We're going to follow your four day itinerary. Where it says Yellowstone north, south, east sides, do you have to enter from those respective entrances or can you enter from say the west side every day and just drive to those places on the itinerary for that day?

My elderly grandparents may only want to do the parks one or two days due to all the walking. Are there things for them to do outside of Yellowstone or Grand Teton while my son and I are in the park? Thank you!

Friday 14th of July 2023

Hi Jordan, thank you for the kind feedback. As for your trip, it's really last-minute, so you'll probably struggle to find hotels in that area, let alone find something that would be ideally located for both parks. For Yellowstone, you should probably look at the West Yellowstone area - it has a lot of accommodations, so you may find something there. For Grand Teton, Jackson Hole is probably your best shot. In both cases, you'll have quite some driving to do to get to the main places in these parks. And yes, you can enter the park anywhere you like and drive to the other areas. Just keep in mind that it will be VERY busy everywhere, so try to start your days early. See also our article with Yellowstone summer tips for more info. Both - West Yellowstone and Jackson Hole are nice little towns with good facilities, so they are good places for your parents to stay if they are not going into the parks with you. But - at least in Yellowstone - most of the top landmarks are easily accessible, so take your parents with you. Hope this helps. Book your hotels ASAP and enjoy your trip!

Hazel Ledesma

Friday 30th of June 2023

What is the best hotel to stay in Yellowstone in terms of distance to the place? We are planning for 5 to 6 days trip both Grand Theton and Yellowstone. Then we want to go to Mt. Rushmore. We are from Southern California. Thanks.

Saturday 1st of July 2023

Hi Hazel, Yellowstone is so big that there is no one 'best' hotel. Plus, by now, all the hotels inside the park are long booked up for the summer season. So if you are traveling this summer, it's really a matter of finding something that is available for your travel dates and suits your itinerary. The places where you'll find most accommodation options are West Yellowstone and Gardiner. Both are just outside the park. Please take a look at our guide on where to stay in Yellowstone for more information and accommodation suggestions just near the park. Hope this helps.

Wednesday 8th of March 2023

We are planning a trip to see Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole in July for about 8 days. We will be driving from Texas. What itinerary and route do you recommend?

Hi Andrea, I recommend spending as much time as you can in the area; so take a look at the 4-5 days itinerary suggestions in the article. The rest really depends on how long it takes you to get there and which accommodations you will be able to find. If you are traveling in the summer, you may have difficulties finding accommodation in the best locations in Yellowstone and Grand Teton, so your itinerary will depend on that too. Good luck with the planning, book asap, and have a great trip!

Wednesday 8th of February 2023

Hi Jurga, Very informative blog. We are planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton this May and we'll be flying into and out of Bozeman (for flight connections etc it works out better). We have 3 days total and would like to cover 2 days in yellowstone and one in grand teton. Can you suggest an itinerary and place of stay (West Yellowstone or Gardiner) (we prefer to just stay in one place instead of two different places) and an optimal plan to cover important points from both places?

Friday 10th of February 2023

@Jurga, Thank you Jurga. Appreciate your response. Yes, I was thinking on similar lines.

Hi Ram, as much as I'd like to help, unfortunately, I really have no time to help with individual itineraries. You could take a look at our 2-day Yellowstone itinerary and adjust it to start from Gardiner or West Yellowstone (and even just stay in one place). However, visiting Grand Teton from any of these towns is really quite far (at least 2.5-3.5 hours drive one way); West Yellowstone is somewhat closer than Gardiner. So, ideally, you would do Bozeman - Yellowstone - Grand Teton - Yellowstone - Bozeman (staying in either Gardiner or West Yellowstone on the first and the last night and somewhere closer to Grand Teton on the second night, if you can still find accommodation in that area). Hope this helps a bit. Good luck with the planning!

We board vintage 1930s Red Buses with roll-back tops for a journey on one of the world’s most scenic routes, Going-to-the-Sun Road. Throughout this drive, learn more about the park’s history from an expert guide, take in views of the towering mountains, and gaze upon a variety of majestic wildlife including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, and moose. Enjoy lunch within the park at St. Mary Village before we continue to Great Falls and check in to our accommodations for the evening.

Day 4 : Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center

We begin our day with a tour of the Lewis & Clark Historic Trail Interpretive Center and relive the explorers’ brave journey. Overlooking the beautiful Missouri River, this center includes exhibits, artifacts, films, and a two-story diorama of the expedition’s portage of the river’s waterfalls. After an included lunch, we visit the C.M. Russell Museum, an art complex that’s dedicated to Charles Marion Russell. Known as one of America’s greatest artists, his primary focus was the signature “cowboy art” that showcased Western cultures, landscapes, and wildlife. We then depart for Helena, Montana’s capital and the heart of this Big Sky State. We check in to our hotel for the next two nights and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Day 5 : Gates of the Mountains

Following our included breakfast, we embark on a guided city tour of Helena. Learn about the storied history of this vibrant city and marvel at the Gothic-style cathedral, which rivals those in Europe with its stunning towers and stained-glass windows. Our tour makes stops at various intriguing attractions, like the Montana State Capitol building. This afternoon, we board a riverboat to discover the epitome of Montana’s natural beauty, Gates of the Mountains, coined by famous explorer Meriwether Lewis. A guide narrates our journey down the Missouri River, sharing historic stories of Lewis and Clark’s explorations. As we marvel at the rugged scenery with towering limestone cliffs to both sides of the boat, keep watch for intriguing wildlife. Tonight, we enjoy an included dinner together and return to our hotel.

Day 6 : Yellowstone National Park

This morning, we begin our drive to Gardiner, Montana, the original gateway to America’s first national park. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 to protect a large variety of wildlife and preserve the world’s most extraordinary collection of geysers and hot springs. We have free time in the Mammoth Hot Springs area to explore nature’s beauty before traveling through the northern loop of Yellowstone, where we may have the opportunity to be part of the notorious bison traffic jam. This evening, we travel to West Yellowstone for our accommodations with shops and restaurants conveniently nearby.

Day 7 : Old Faithful

After an included continental breakfast, we return to Yellowstone National Park to enjoy a full day of soaking up the natural wonders with a guided tour. During our adventure, we make stops at Old Faithful, the world’s most famous geyser, and Artist Point. Have your camera ready to capture stunning views of Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls and the multicolored Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. A scenic drive then takes us through Hayden Valley, a region of lush forest meadows and haven for wildlife. Watch for bison and other fascinating animals! We depart Yellowstone this afternoon and settle in for a comfortable two-night stay in Jackson, Wyoming.

Day 8 : The Grand Tetons

This morning, we visit Grand Teton National Park, boasting picturesque views of shimmering lakes, rolling meadows, and soaring mountain ranges with snow-capped peaks. Watch for elk, bison, fox, moose, and bald eagles as we venture through the park and take advantage of premier photo opportunities. Learn about the past, present, and future of this protected area with immaculate exhibits and a short video during our stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center. We also visit the Chapel of the Transfiguration, a rustic log chapel with 100-year-old history and picture-perfect vistas of the Tetons, including Grand Teton. Tonight, we enjoy a covered wagon ride in Cache Creek Canyon to our included dinner - a tasty barbecue cookout accompanied with the music and songs of the Old West!

Day 9 : Salt Lake City

Step aboard our comfortable motorcoach this morning for one last scenic drive, taking us from Jackson into Salt Lake City. Along the way, we break at Bear Lake Overlook to stretch our legs as we take in spectacular views of the turquoise water nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Tonight, we celebrate with our new friends at a special Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner. Our accommodations this evening are in downtown Salt Lake City.

Day 10 : Fly Home

We return home with fond memories of our Rockies adventure.

What makes for a good wildlife safari.

A comfortable vehicle and good snacks are a must for a fun day on safari, but what makes our tours exceptional are our incredibly passionate and knowledgeable guides! Each of our guides have unique backgrounds in wildlife and all share the same love for our parks and the animals. This is more than just a job to them and part of the thrill of guiding is sharing the experience with their guests when you see your first wild grizzly, or watch a herd of bison in their ancient natural range. Our expert guides equipped with our high-quality optics for up close viewing is sure to deliver a wildlife safari that you will never forget!

How should I prepare for my first animal safari?

One thing to know about Yellowstone and Grand Teton is that the weather is unpredictable. It’s not impossible to see snow in July! Even on hot summer days the mornings and evenings can be cold, so be sure to pack layers to prepare for varying temperatures. If you are coming from lower elevations, take your time and drink plenty of water. Don’t worry, there will be lots of restroom opportunities! Cell phone cameras have come a long way and will certainly do the job, but if you have a camera with a longer zoom be sure to bring it with you. There are no guarantees with wildlife, so keep an open mind. Wild animals are on their own schedules and there’s always a chance you won’t see the one thing you were hoping for. However, there are so many amazing things to see in these parks that you will not be disappointed!

How to tour from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone?

One of the best things about touring Yellowstone from Jackson Hole is that you get the bonus of traveling through Grand Teton National Park on the way. The roughly 50-mile drive between Jackson and the South Entrance is thoroughly enjoyable as you start with the sunrise hitting the jagged peaks of the Teton mountain range. You will have stunning scenery before you even reach the gate, and you may be surprised how many animals you see on the journey! All of this is possible on a day tour and you’ll be picked up and dropped off at your place of lodging. Seeing the best of Yellowstone has never been easier!

  • THE JOURNEY

7-Day Yellowstone + Grand Teton National Parks RV Road Trip

grand teton yellowstone tours

Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are iconic destinations with abundant wildlife, hiking trails, scenic drives, and majestic mountains. In just seven days, you can fully explore these parks by RV and find the best things to see and do, without feeling rushed. Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest in America, with historic lodges and geothermal features such as geysers and bubbling mud pots. Grand Teton National Park has stunning mountains, alpine lakes, and many historic sites. Both parks offer wonderful activities such as wildlife viewing, photography, and hiking. Blacksford RV recommends a seven-day itinerary that will guide you on an unforgettable RV adventure to discover the best things to see and do in Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

After picking up your Blacksford RV rental (near Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport), travelers will stock up on food and supplies in Bozeman and head south to West Yellowstone, Montana. The two to three hour drive down the dramatic and beautiful Gallatin Road (US-191) passes Big Sky, Montana, a wonderful place to stop if you have extra time. Roadtrippers will travel along the Gallatin River most of the way, before reaching the bustling village of West Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park’s most popular West Entrance.

“From West Yellowstone, one can reach Grand Teton National Park two ways,” said Becky Goodell, owner and CEO of Blacksford. “Continue south on US-20 to Jackson, Wyoming, or drive through Yellowstone itself to Grand Teton National Park via the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Either route will take two to four hours.”

grand teton yellowstone tours

Before heading out on an RV adventure, it’s a good idea to make campground reservations for Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Campgrounds and RV parks in and around both parks fill up quickly during the warmer months. The National Park Service’s online reservation system allows travelers to reserve in-park campground sites 13 months in advance. Of the 12 RV-friendly campgrounds in Yellowstone, only five accept reservations: Bridge Bay, Fishing Bridge, Canyon, Grant Village, and Madison Junction. Several in-park Yellowstone campgrounds are on a first-come, first-served basis.

In Grand Teton, all RV campgrounds require advance reservations and can be reserved at  Recreation.gov . The five campgrounds are: Gros Ventre, Signal Mountain, Colter Bay, Lizard Creek, and Headwaters. If connectivity and amenities are a priority, then you may prefer to stay just outside Yellowstone’s West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana, and just outside Grand Teton National Park in nearby, upscale Jackson, Wyoming. Both towns offer plenty of shops, restaurants, grocery stores, bars, entertainment, tours, and other services.

“Many first-time RVers are nervous about parking their RV at campgrounds and points of interest inside the park,” said Goodell. “Blacksford’s RVs are easy to drive, much like driving a large SUV or van, and campgrounds make it relatively easy to cautiously park your RV at your campsite.”

Both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks have RV parking at various points of interest. Parking for RVs and cars inside the park can require patience during the busy season when parking lots are crowded. Plan to wait a few minutes at popular sites to get a parking spot.

7-day Yellowstone to Grand Teton itinerary:

Day 1 – Bozeman to Big Sky and West Yellowstone Day 2 – Old Faithful and geothermal features Day 3 – Wildlife, Lamar Valley & the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Day 4 – Zip-lining, rafting, fishing, rodeos, & museums near West Yellowstone Day 5 – Drive to Grand Teton National Park Day 6 – Driving, hiking and rafting in Grand Teton National Park Day 7 – Final morning in Jackson, Wyoming, and return to Bozeman

grand teton yellowstone tours

I am struggling with the roundtrip from Bozeman and how to properly break it up.Travelling with 2 kids.

July 14th - arrive in Bozeman around 10am

June 18th - leave Bozeman around 6:30am (prefer to stay at a Bozeman hotel night before since early flight )

Thought we would stay in Gardiner/Mammoth for north loop and Old Faithful or Lake Yellowstone for South Loop. Not sure about Grand Teton. We would like to see the highlights of both parks. We enjoy light hiking (max 5 miles a day), and interested in doing activities. Any suggestions on how to break this trip up would be greatly appreciated!!

If you can plan a separate trip sometime in the future dedicated for just Grand Teton Park, the following is one way you can break up just a Yellowstone focused trip:

July 14- Fly into Bozeman at 10 am *Overnight Gardiner or Cooke City just outside the northeast entrance

July 15- *Overnight Canyon or Lake (2 lodging options)

July 16- *Overnight Old Faithful (3 lodging options) or in West Yellowstone

July 17- *Overnight Bozeman or Belgrade

July 18- Fly out of Bozeman at 6:30 am

If you want to alleviate 1 night stays as much as possible, consider staying at Canyon on July 14th and 15th. You can easily tour the upper loop from Canyon, along with Hayden Valley and the area around Fishing Bridge/ Yellowstone Lake .

...............................................

If you want to get some time in Grand Teton Park during this trip, you could consider something like the following:

July 14- Fly into Bozeman at 10 am *Overnight Gardiner, Mammoth, or Canyon Lodge

July 15- *Overnight Grand Teton Park or town of Jackson

July 16- *Overnight Old Faithful

July 17- *Overnight Bozeman

........................................

For lodging inside Yellowstone Park use the official concessionaire's website ( Yellowstone National Park Lodges aka Xanterra). Don't use a 3rd party company that will charge a 10% non-refundable booking fee for the same service that Xanterra does for free.

Grand Teton Park has a couple of official lodging concessionaires t hat are listed on the following link:

Yellowstone is huge, and driving is slow going due to narrow roads, low speed limits, animals on the road, or people stopped to look at animals. With so few days, and if you want to take time to hike, it will be hard to see even the majority of YS. GTNP is not easily a day trip.

With a 10:30 am flight out of Bozeman, you will need to stay in either Mammoth or Gardiner which is a 1.5 hour drive to get to Bozeman. With that in mind, consider switching the itineraries I suggested in post #1 to the following:

July 14- Fly into Bozeman at 10 am *Overnight Old Faithful

July 15- *Overnight Old Faithful if you're more interested in the geyser basins on the west side of the park or at Canyon Lodge on the east side of the park if you're more interested in waterfall features and wildlife watching.

July 16- *Overnight Canyon Lodge

July 17- *Overnight Mammoth or Gardiner

July 18- Leave Mammoth or Gardiner by 7 am at the latest. Fly out of Bozeman at 10:30 am

Thanks for the map. that really helps.

There are 3 lodging options at Old Faithful.

Old Faithful Inn

Old Faithful Snow Lodge & Cabins

https://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/lodgings/cabin/old-faithful-snow-lodge-cabins-summer/

Old Faithful Lodge Cabins

https://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/lodgings/cabin/old-faithful-lodge-cabins/

The nearest gateway town to Old Faithful is West Yellowstone which is a little under a 1.5 hour drive or maybe more depending on traffic flow and unpredictable wildlife jams.

Thank you Deb . This helps. How is the weather in July ? I see cabins doesn't have AC. Can we sleep comfortably if we are able to get rooms in old faithrul lodges?

Can you also suggest lodges for overnight at canyon lodge and Gardiner? canyon lodge doesn't have availability.

https://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com

Use only this link to look for, and book, in park lodging. If you use the "flexible dates" tab, you can see everything available for the month.

If you can't find anything in the park that you want, then the gateway towns will be your next best bet - West Yellowstone and Gardiner. For those, you can use TripAdvisor to filter dates and reviews. Cooke City/Slivergate is also an option, but it is very small, with limited dining, and really is best for access to Lamar Valley .

You will be fine without AC. It may get warm in the afternoon, but nights cool down nicely. I've never wished for AC when in the park.

===Can you also suggest lodges for overnight at canyon lodge and Gardiner? canyon lodge doesn't have availability.===

The other closest lodging to Canyon is Roosevelt Lodge which is 19 miles (about 50 minute drive) north of Canyon.

There are quite a few lodging options available in Gardiner just outside the north entrance. July is a very busy month, so you will just have to check the individual websites to see what is available for the dates you need them. In the past, I've stayed at the Yellowstone River Motel, Absaroka Lodge, and Super 8 and have been satisfied with all of them and have been repeat customers at all three.

===How is the weather in July ? I see cabins doesn't have AC. Can we sleep comfortably if we are able to get rooms in old faithrul lodges?===

It will be warm/hot during the day but will cool down at night. If windows and drapes are closed during the day and opened up at night, the room will cool down. Rooms and cabins will have a fan in them which helps circulated the cooler air around. We always take and extension cord with us as sometimes the makeup of the room and availability of plug ins doesn't always correlate with where we need to put the fan.
