A Journey Through the Meaning Behind the Song “Lights” by Journey

What makes a song stand the test of time? For the band Journey, it’s their hit song “Lights,” a staple of classic rock radio stations that has been played countless times since it was first released in 1978.

Table of Contents

But what is the meaning behind the song? Why has it resonated with so many people over the years? In this article, we’ll take a journey through the history and significance of “Lights” by Journey.

The Inspiration Behind “Lights”

Journey was formed in San Francisco in 1973, and “Lights” was written in 1977 by keyboardist Gregg Rolie and guitarist Neal Schon. The song was initially inspired by a view of the city from the top of Twin Peaks, a popular viewpoint in San Francisco.

“Lights” is a tribute to the band’s hometown and the city that they love. In an interview with Classic Rock Magazine, Schon said, “It’s about San Francisco, and we all love that city. It evokes beautiful memories for us and holds a special place in our hearts.”

The Meaning of “Lights”

At its core, “Lights” is a song about feeling at home in a particular place. The opening lines of the song, “When the lights go down in the city / And the sun shines on the bay,” evoke a feeling of comfort and familiarity.

For many people, San Francisco is a place that feels like home. Whether you’re a native San Franciscan, a transplant, or a visitor, there’s something about the city that feels like it welcomes you with open arms.

“Lights” speaks to that feeling. The chorus of the song, “So you think you’re lonely / Well my friend, I’m lonely too / I want to get back to my city by the bay / Oh, oh / It’s sad, oh there’s been mornings out on the road without you / Without your charms / Oh, oh, oh, oh,” speaks to a sense of longing for a specific place.

The song also touches on the sense of magic that San Francisco holds for many people. From the hippie counterculture of the 1960s to the tech boom of recent years, San Francisco has been a city of dreams and possibilities.

In “Lights,” the band captures that sense of magic. The lyrics, “If you’re alive and you’re in San Francisco / You’re feeling the magic / It’s all around you” speak to the idea that San Francisco is a place that is full of life and energy.

The Legacy of “Lights”

Over the years, “Lights” has become an anthem for San Francisco and a beloved classic rock song. It’s been covered by numerous artists, including Taylor Hicks and Pentatonix.

The song has also been used in various movies and TV shows, including the hit series “The Sopranos” and the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

In an interview with Songfacts, Journey’s lead singer, Steve Perry, said, “I think ‘Lights’ is one of the best things we ever wrote. It’s just a sweet song about coming back to San Francisco.”

For many people, “Lights” is more than just a song. It’s a reminder of a time and a place, a song that captures the essence of San Francisco and the magic that the city holds.

The Bottom Line

“Lights” by Journey is a classic rock song that has stood the test of time. It speaks to a sense of longing for a specific place and captures the magic of San Francisco.

For those who love the city by the bay, “Lights” is a reminder of the place they call home. For those who have never been to San Francisco, the song is a window into the city’s culture and spirit.

As long as people love San Francisco, “Lights” will continue to be an anthem for the city, and a beloved classic rock song for generations to come.

i always associated it with Green BAY, seeing as how it says city by the BAY duhh -Kevin

yes! thank you fellow wisconsin person of awesomeness!

lol, but seriously, thanks to you i will now and forever be reminded of the great state of wisconsin.

Journey's best.

go ahead. argue.

and, yes, it is about San Fran, but I'd like to think it's about my home town, sea-town.

and computwiz - Journey is not a singer. journey is a band. Steve Perry is a singer. for a band. called journey. shoots

I used to listen to this song every mourning on the ride to my daycare. And to me it's about Seattle. Thats my city, but now it had a greater meaning when I was all the way out in butt fucking Iraq fight a war. I come back in August 2003. Hey friends does that give a good enough instight for a great song.

This is a great song...one of my favorites. Joyrney is a good band. And with regards to that Los Angeles comment...I, too, must laugh. Everybody knows that San Francisco is the city by the bay.

@zacster He said it's definitely about LA but had to change the name when he got called to join the band. He wrote this song before he joined Journey

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/journeys-steve-perry-joins-eels-711540

actually, compuwiz is kinda right...Steve Perry originally wrote this song about LA, then had to change it when he joined Journey to make it about San Fran cuz that's where the rest of Journey was from...i got your back compuwiz!!

hell yeah CT man. I have great memories of hearing this song on the radio while driving up I-91 throught hartford. Not a city by the bay in any means, but its still a good feeling.

YES THIS SONG IS ABOUT SAN FRANSICO, NOT LOS ANGELES! A really great memory I have of this song is when I was a kid me and my family flew to San Fransico. It was at like 2:00 in the morning when the plane was about the hit the runway, and they played this song during the landing process. Since the airport is right in the bay, MAN the sight of the Golden Gate Bridge lit up with this song playing was so beatuiful, and at the same time so emontional. Passengers were crying, it definatley is something I will remember for ever. This song always cheers me up because it makes me think of that time. Steve Perry has a powerful, and heart touching voice.

This would be a great story, if you could actually see the GG bridge from the Airport!

The fact that one single radio standard Journey song could incite such heated debate is a major source of entertainment for me at this moment.

Sure, I am easily amused. Just as Compuwiz19 is positively weird. Whats next? The assertion by FaRvELvR1992 that its about green bay? Oh, wait. wouldnt want to give anyone any ideas...

Probably my favorite Journey song (just an inch above Separate Ways).

I always love thinking about how with a few judicious changes to the lyrics, it could really be a song about wanting to go home to any city. Yeah, I know it's about San Francisco, but it's nice to imagine it could be about Tampa, New York City, or even Hell, Michigan if one felt like it. That's how universal the sensibility it invokes is.

Even though this is about San Francisco, it was written in Los Angeles, where the band had relocated. Steve Perry explained in an interview with Joe Benson of Arrow 93.1 FM: "I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely except for the bridge and it was written about Los Angeles. It was 'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA.' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time. And so I just had it sitting back in the corner. Then life changed my plans once again, and I was now facing joining Journey. I love San Francisco, the bay and the whole thing. 'The bay' fit so nice, 'When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay.' It was one of those early morning going across the bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect."

'City by the Bay' IS synonymous with San Francisco(Bay Area) and that's where Steve is from but this song can be interpreted as anyone's 'city by the bay'.

How a Last-Minute Steve Perry Edit Changed ‘Lights’ Forever

Steve Perry 's arrival before the release of 1978's Infinity permanently shifted Journey 's career path for the better. But only after Perry made a slight change to "Lights," one of the album's best-known singles.

"This is kind of a funny story," Perry told Uncle Joe Benson on the Ultimate Classic Rock Nights radio show, "but I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely, except for the bridge. And it was written about Los Angeles. It was, ' When the lights go down in the city / And the sun shines on L.A. ' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time."

Perry shelved the song, until as he said, "life changed my plans once again." He joined Journey in October 1977 , replacing singer Robert Fleischman toward the end of their tour. Perry's job required him to move north to his new band's home, and he was soon inspired to take a different approach to the song.

"I love San Francisco, and I love the Bay and the whole thing, and the words 'the bay' fit in so nice," Perry added. "' When the lights go down in the city / And the sun shines on the bay ,' you know? It was one of those early-morning-going-across-the-bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. So, it was perfect."

Be sure to listen to Ultimate Classic Rock Nights on more than 50 stations across the U.S. from 7PM until midnight, Monday through Friday. You can see the list of radio stations where it airs here .

Journey - Lights - Lyrics Meaning

The song "Lights" by Journey was not originally a hit; however, it gained popularity over the years. The song is thought to be about San Francisco because of the reference to the "City by the Bay." However, the song was actually written originally about Los Angeles. The band is originally from the San Francisco area; however, they relocated to LA later on and wrote the song about this city. The original lyrics to the song were "When the lights go down in the city, and the sun shines on LA" However, Perry didn't like the way this flowed and later changed the lyrics to "The sun shines on the bay."

Steve Perry states in an interview that the song was brought back to focus when he first joined Journey and they decided that the lyrics "by the bay" were much more suitable since the band originated from the San Francisco area. This was the first song that featured Perry as the lead singer of Journey and references the beauty of the sunset in San Francisco as it reflects off of the bay. This song was featured on the album "Infinity" which was the last album that featured Aynsley Dunbar as the drummer. He was later replaced by Steve Smith because he was "incompatible" with the band.

1. journey (1975).

“Journey” was the first studio album by American rock band Journey, released by Columbia Records on April 1, 1975. Far from the sound of their later years, this first release was in a more jazzy progressive rock direction with strong instrumental aspirations; among other things, it also had rhythm guitarist George Tickner in an oddity distinction in their lineup. Before this release, Journey had recorded a demo album with the same songs but in a different order, and it had Prairie Prince as the drummer. Quite a number of unreleased tracks—including some instrumentals—and the original title track, “Charge of the Light Brigade,” had not been included in this very basic starting album.

2. Look into the Future (1976)

journey albums Look into the Future image

  • On a Saturday Nite
  • It’s All Too Much
  • She Makes Me (Feel Alright)
  • You’re on Your Own
  • Look into the Future
  • Midnight Dreamer
  • I’m Gonna Leave You

“Look into the Future,” Journey’s second studio album, was released through Columbia Records in January 1976 and marked a change in musical direction for the band. Though it tempered a lot of the overt progressiveness of that debut self-titled album, this sophomore effort still maintained a lot of its experimental feel, particularly in songs like the title track and “I’m Gonna Leave You.” The record also included a cover of The Beatles’ “It’s All Too Much,” which was originally featured in the Yellow Submarine film. “Look into the Future” remains the longest recorded Journey song. Importantly, it was the last album to feature rhythm guitarist George Tickner; hence, his exit reduced the membership to the lineup of Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Ross Valory, and Aynsley Dunbar.

3. Next (1977)

journey albums Next image

  • I Would Find You
  • Here We Are
  • Nickel and Dime

“Released in 1977, ‘Next’ was Journey’s third studio album and became a continuation of the band’s sound, merging elements from 1976’s ‘Look into the Future’ with traces of their earlier jazz-progressive rock style. Distinctly, ‘Next’ marked the end of an era: it was the last album to feature Gregg Rolie as the primary lead singer. The single release from this album was ‘Spaceman’/ ‘Nickel and Dime.’ Curiously, on early pressings, an instrumental track named ‘Cookie Duster’ was listed but not included. ‘Next’ peaked at No. 85 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and saw the beginning of lead vocalist Robert Fleischman with the band, setting the stage for the evolution of the group’s musical direction.

4. Infinity (1978)

journey albums Infinity image

  • Feeling That Way
  • Wheel in the Sky
  • Somethin’ to Hide
  • Winds of March
  • Opened the Door

“Infinity” is the fourth studio album by the famous American rock band Journey, which became a real landmark in the group’s history. This January 1978 release of Columbia Records became a real turning point for the band since it was the first to present the powerful vocals of Steve Perry and also their first album with him as the vocalist. It was also the last to include Aynsley Dunbar as a drummer. Such a landmark release pointed toward Journey’s new sound and set up the path for the band’s future successes, setting the stage for an iconic musical journey to come.

5. Evolution (1979)

  • Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’
  • City of the Angels
  • When You’re Alone (It Ain’t Easy)
  • Sweet and Simple
  • Lovin’ You Is Easy
  • Just the Same Way
  • Do You Recall

The fifth studio album by American rock band Journey, “Evolution,” was the breakthrough. It came out in March 1979 via Columbia Records and was the first to include Steve Smith on drums in the lineup. It was the highest-charting album the group had at that time, peaking at number 20 on the US Billboard 200, and has sold three million copies in the US. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker, famous for his work with the band Queen, the album included the hit “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” their first Top 20 single, and “Just the Same Way,” which duetted both the original lead vocalist Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry. Having tracks like “Too Late,” “Evolution” really pushed the limits of rock ballads with Neal Schon’s impressive guitar work.

6. Departure (1980)

  • Any Way You Want It
  • Walks Like a Lady
  • Someday Soon
  • People and Places
  • Precious Time
  • Where Were You
  • I’m Cryin’
  • Line of Fire
  • Good Morning Girl
  • Stay Awhile
  • Homemade Love
  • Natural Thing
  • Little Girl

Their sixth studio album, “Departure,” was released on February 29, 1980, by the American rock band Journey through Columbia Records. This was a breakout album for Journey in that it would be their first top 10 Billboard 200 chart peaking at No. 8. With the Top 25 single “Any Way You Want It,” “Departure” had a bit harder edge to it because of its “live in studio” recording method.

The album had three singles, and these were supplemented in their effect on the charts by “Walks Like a Lady” and a medley of “Good Morning Girl” and “Stay Awhile”. Of special note is the fact that this album was the last to include founding member Gregg Rolie and the first to set the stage for the inclusion of Jonathan Cain into the band. In the years that followed, “Departure” would be remastered and reissued to feature bonus tracks for fans everywhere.

7. Escape (1981)

  • Don’t Stop Believin’
  • Stone in Love
  • Who’s Crying Now
  • Keep On Runnin’
  • Still They Ride
  • Lay It Down
  • Dead or Alive
  • Mother, Father

In a word, Escape—stylized as E5C4P3 on the album cover—was the epitome of Journey’s musical career. This seventh studio album, released on 17 July 1981 via Columbia Records, reached number one on the American Billboard 200 chart. Here is the bona fide chart-topping sensation, equipped with an impressive quartet of Billboard Hot 100 singles: the classic anthem “Don’t Stop Believin'” (no. 9), “Who’s Crying Now” (no. 4), “Still They Ride” (no. 19), and the heart-rending ballad “Open Arms” reaching No. 2. This rock opus also bestowed the airwaves with another immortal classic, ‘Stone in Love.’ With the RIAA certifying it diamond in July 2021, it became Journey’s most successful studio album and the second most overall successful album, only behind their greatest hits package.

8. Frontiers (1983)

journey albums Frontiers image

  • Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
  • Send Her My Love
  • Chain Reaction
  • After the Fall
  • Edge of the Blade
  • Troubled Child

“Frontiers,” the eighth studio album by the American rock band Journey, was released on February 1, 1983, via Columbia Records. Noticeably, it was the last performance with bassist Ross Valory until the 1996 release of “Trial by Fire.” It became their biggest seller to date, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and generating four top 40 singles: “After the Fall” (No. 23), “Send Her My Love” (No. 23), “Faithfully” (No. 12), and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” (No. 8). “Frontiers” was later certified six times platinum by the RIAA. Interestingly, the tracklist for this album was changed at the last minute. Two songs were exchanged, one of which, “Only the Young,” gained some popularity in the movie “Vision Quest.”

9. Raised on Radio (1986)

journey albums Raised on Radio image

  • Girl Can’t Help It
  • Positive Touch
  • Be Good to Yourself
  • Once You Love Somebody
  • Happy to Give
  • Raised on Radio
  • I’ll Be Alright Without You
  • It Could Have Been You
  • The Eyes of a Woman
  • Why Can’t This Night Go on Forever

“Raised on Radio,” the ninth studio album by the American rock band Journey, was released in April 1986 on the Columbia Records label. This was a radical lineup change, as it was their first album without founding bassist Ross Valory; he was substituted by session bassist Bob Glaub and later by Randy Jackson. Only a few cuts were performed by drummer Steve Smith before he was replaced, and then supplemented by the session drummer Larrie Londin, and Mike Baird for the following tour. The album was very successful and issued three US top 20 singles: “Girl Can’t Help It,” “I’ll Be Alright Without You,” and “Suzanne.” It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Double Platinum in the USA.

10. Trial by Fire (1996)

  • Message of Love
  • When You Love a Woman
  • If He Should Break Your Heart
  • Forever in Blue
  • Castles Burning
  • Don’t Be Down on Me Baby
  • Still She Cries

  • When I Think of You
  • Easy to Fall
  • Can’t Tame the Lion
  • It’s Just the Rain
  • Trial by Fire
  • Baby I’m a Leavin’ You
  • I Can See It in Your Eyes

“Trial by Fire,” the tenth studio album by the American rock group Journey, was released on October 22, 1996. It marked the return of the classic 1981–1985 lineup, which had not recorded together since the aforementioned “Frontiers.” Produced by Kevin Shirley, it also included the return of bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith from the aforementioned set. This was the last to feature vocalist Steve Perry. Standout songs on the album include Grammy-nominated hit, “When You Love a Woman”, and a set of spiritually-inspired songs. This album was, however, the only Journey release never to receive supporting on local tours, due to internal disagreements and the hip injury that Perry had. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and it was also done on platinum.

11. Arrival (2001)

  • Lifetime of Dreams
  • Live and Breathe
  • Nothin’ Comes Close
  • To Be Alive Again
  • Kiss Me Softly
  • We Will Meet Again

“Arrival,” the eleventh studio album by the legendary American rock band Journey, was released on April 3, 2001, and in Japan during 2000, with one song substituted. The record became a real watershed event in the history of this band since it presented a new vocalist, Steve Augeri, after the unforgettable Steve Perry, and a new drummer, Deen Castronovo, succeeding Steve Smith. “Arrival” was a record that mixed the hard rock elements reminiscent of the ’70s and ’80s material of the band with their trademark ballads, which sounded more like Perry. Although it turned out to be a commercial success by hitting #12 on Billboard’s Top Internet Albums chart, the album received mixed reviews from critics; some praised Neal Schon’s guitar work but called it formulaic.

12. Generations (2005)

journey albums Generations image

  • Faith in the Heartland
  • The Place in Your Heart
  • A Better Life
  • Every Generation
  • Butterfly (She Flies Alone)
  • Knowing That You Love Me
  • Out of Harms Way
  • In Self-Defense
  • Better Together
  • Beyond the Clouds
  • Never Too Late
  • Pride of the Family

“Generations,” Journey’s twelfth studio album, was the final performance by this iconic American rock band with lead singer Steve Augeri. It was the final act in a period of time, released in 2005 on Sanctuary Records, that had cemented the lineup which debuted on 2000’s “Arrival” and continued with 2002’s “Red 13 EP” with Deen Castronovo on drums. One of the distinctive things about the album was that all members of the band took turns singing lead vocals, a decision instigated by Augeri’s vocal fatigue. Critical reception was mixed—some liked Augeri’s performance and the various musical direction taken by the band but questioned the decision to share lead vocals. It peaked at No. 170 on the Billboard 200, and Augeri left the band in the middle of the 2006 tour with a throat infection, thus ending the era of Journey’s sound.

13. Revelation (2008)

“Revelation” was the thirteenth studio album by the American rock band Journey, which was the first to feature their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda. It includes 11 new tracks and 11 re-recorded greatest hits, both proving the vocals of Pineda. Added to this in the North American version was a DVD of the band performing dynamically on March 8, 2008, in Las Vegas. Other notable singles included “Never Walk Away,” “Where Did I Lose Your Love,” and “After All These Years,” both written by Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, did very well on the adult contemporary charts. The album earned very good reviews; many praised Pineda’s vocals and the band’s return to form. An extra track, “Let It Take You Back,” was included in the European release.

14. Eclipse (2011)

journey albums Eclipse image

Eclipse is the fourteenth studio album by the powerhouse American rock band Journey and the second with lead singer Arnel Pineda. It was released worldwide on different dates in 2011, coming out first on May 24 in the United States and Canada, then on May 27 in Japan, May 30 in the United Kingdom, and finally on June 3 for the international release. With songwriting credits are Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain; Pineda provided his share of songwriting as well. It is the final appearance of bassist Ross Valory, who left the band in 2020. The ‘Eclipse’ adds another chapter to Journey’s long-lived musical history.

15. Freedom (2022)

  • Still Believe in Love
  • You Got the Best of Me

  • The Way We Used to Be
  • Come Away with Me
  • Let It Rain
  • Holdin’ On
  • All Day, All Night
  • Don’t Go
  • United We Stand
  • Life Rolls On
  • Beautiful as You Are

“Freedom” is the fifteenth studio album released by the American rock legends Journey on 8 July 2022 through BMG Rights Management and Frontiers Records. Marking a landmark change in this regard, it is the group’s second album without band co-founder bassist Ross Valory, who has been replaced by Randy Jackson, the last of whose work with Journey was in 1986’s “Raised on Radio”. Featuring fifteen tracks running a grand one hour, thirteen minutes, it becomes Journey’s longest album, excluding greatest hits compilations. While it was hailed for its performance and musicianship, this album got very mixed critical reviews, but most of the critics—or, more importantly, most reviews—were mentioning the poor production, poor mixing, and general overlongness of it.

Conclusion:

The fact that such a journey has endured is purely a testament to their ability to provide timeless rock anthems that go on and on, basically, forever—to connect with people from all corners of the globe. From the early days of just another progressive rock band to a pop-rock powerhouse, Journey’s albums show it all. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, and hit songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey still does not give any hint of slowing down to become one of the most popular rock bands ever. A look through Journey albums in order points to the fact that the group has hauled its long journey through several decades of music; surely it has cemented its place within the pages of rock history but, more importantly, within the hearts of their fans everywhere.

  • Tobias from Walsrode , Germany Still I am very impressed , even After decades of Years passing by, my JOURNEY-cds are Constantly in the Air, just Discovered several YouTube-Videos.... to Continue ROCKING .... STAY HEALTHY!!
  • Terri from Long Beach, Wa This song was originally written by Steve Perry while he lived in Los Angeles. It wasn't quite right so he put it aside. When he joined Journey it came with him. Neal Schon helped to suggest some changes in the song that made it work. The rest is history.
  • Mary from Castle Rock, Co I love this song. I grew up listening to Journey in the 80's. When I graduated from High School we went for our Senior Trip to San Francisco and took a ride on of their bay area boats and OF COURSE they played this song...will never forget it. It brought me goosbumps. I can still remember who I danced this song with, that's how vivid my memories are of this song. Proud to be from the Bay Area!!! Love you Steve Perry!
  • Sandra from Gardnerville, Nv Hey James, San Jose, CA...Too funny! First, though...Steve Perry...What an incredible rock n' roll vocal! I love the song and the way he sang it! Anyway...While I heard the reference to this song/LA for the first time right here, I have to laugh about the SF Giants, thing. Although, I am a LA Dodgers Fan, I was in attendance to hear a friend of mine actually sing the National Anthem at Candlestick at an SF Giants game, (It was on the Fourth of July at a Giants/Dodger game. I don't remember what year for the life of me...details are sketchy...LOL), his elderly dad was there for it and it was a very special moment for all of us. Speaking of the SF Giants, I have a cute story about Will Clark and Mackey Sasser...
  • James from San Jose, Ca 3. And finally, while it's personally disappointing to learn about the "L.A." thing, I had a great "Lights" moment in San Francisco. I was at a Giant's game back when they played at Candlestick Park. It was July 4, but San Francisco weather, it was actually rainy. By the end of the game, the rain had turned to a mist, and as they prepared for the July 4 fireworks, they played Lights as they dimmed the stadium lights. I know it was planned that way, but with the mist and everything, it was just a beautiful moment that I'll never forget.
  • James from San Jose, Ca 2. lol Wish I could delete my last comment. Here is a 2nd Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord.html The "L.A." claim is true, and it's about sunRISE on the Bay according to Perry. There you have it.
  • James from San Jose, Ca 1. Here's the Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord3.html There is NOTHING about the song being written about L.A., so stop the rumors.
  • Jeff from Seal Beach, Ca I also heard the interview with joe benson on the radio in los angeles where steve perry mentions the lyrics originally were l.A., not the bay. He also mentioned other lyrics about lights referring to los angeles that he had to change to fit the s.F. Image..I love the song but it was originally about los angeles, not San Francisco
  • Teri from Ca., Ca In an interview with Joe Benson, Steve Perry talked about this song. Originally, he wrote this song about Los Angeles. The original lyrics said "when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on L.A.". (The person(s) that mentioned this fact before was correct) When Steve joined Journey he changed it, removing the L.A. reference and added references to the bay area/San Francisco after driving across one of the bridges.
  • Beau from San Francisco, Ca So Steve Perry longs for San Francisco while he's in LA, but the distance doesn't make him forget that the San Francisco looks EAST over the bay. I have enjoyed many a sunrise and Steve describes the feeling spectacularly.
  • Brandon from Peoria, Il Actually if you think of the "lights going down" as the city's lights fading OFF. Then it makes sense. It would be refering to early morning in San Fransisco. BUT...since the sun rises in the EAST, the sun would not be coming up over the bay at the time...OKAY try this...Late evening, with the sun setting over the San Fransisco Bay and the city's lights coming ON just before dark...that sounds about right :)
  • Robert from San Francisco, Ca When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay. Doesn't happen very often but wouldn't trade it. Journey had it right - right Tilton.
  • Casey from Pensacola, Fl yep... he may have been in LA, but he says "I want to get back to my City by the bay" right in the lyrics. seems pretty clear to me...
  • Paul from Cincinnati, Oh I love this song. It always makes me feel sentimental.
  • Matthew from East Brunswick, Nj Terrific song, Excellent guitar riff. Journey rocks!
  • Becki from Hendersonville, Tn This song Is about San Francisco.I belong to a Steve Perry website and they have years of archives of interviews.Steve himself said it was about San Francisco.
  • Jennifer from San Antonoi, Tx Note to Emo in San Jose, the lyrics actually say: "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the BAY..." not LA
  • Aj from Cleveland, Ga I also love the guitar solo.
  • Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc Well, I know the songs have different beats, but the beginning still sounds like something Hendricks would have done.
  • Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc great song! It's one of my favorites by them! I love the guitar solo. The beginning of the song sounds similar to the beginning of 'little Wing' by Jimi hendricks. Does anyone agree with me?
  • Emo from San Jose, Ca Reportedly, Steve Perry did in fact originally write the song in L.A. and the lyrics were something like "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shine on L.A...."
  • Tony from San Francisco, Ca This song may have been partially written IN L.A., but last time I checked, San Francisco was the city by the bay.
  • Josh from C.p, Mn the song was actually written about LA since steve wrote parts of it while he lived in LA
  • Chris from Aurora, Il Steve Perry has an amazing voice, and this is one of the songs that I listen to when I just get tired of bands who have talent, but still get airtime on the radio.

Louisville lights can kill migrating birds. These small changes can help them survive this fall

Portrait of Connor Giffin

The bright lights of Louisville are a threat to millions of birds migrating through the region — and advocates are asking the community to protect hundreds of species by turning off unnecessary lights during seasonal migration periods.

The Louisville Audubon Society is calling on Louisville residents and businesses to "minimize all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during peak spring and fall bird migration — April and May and September and October — as well as make seasonal lighting changes," according to the group's Lights Out Louisville campaign .

Many bird species take advantage of the cooler, calmer night skies for migration, and rely on the natural cycle of day and night to navigate thousands of miles. Artificial city lights disrupt the natural darkness, disorienting migrating birds and making window collisions more likely.

"Lighting can attract large numbers of night-migrating birds from as far as 5 kilometers away," according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Birds can become entrapped in these areas of bright lights, circling endlessly, depleting energy stores needed for migration, and even colliding with buildings and infrastructure."

Recent research estimates more than 1 billion birds are killed by window collisions in the U.S. each year.

The Louisville Audubon Society is asking the community to take the following steps to protect migrating birds:

  • Turn off unnecessary lights, both indoors and outside.
  • Close blinds, shades, and curtains to prevent “sky glow.”
  • Use motion detectors for outdoor lighting.
  • Keep outdoor lighting pointed down or shield the tops of lights.
  • Use “warm” light bulbs; avoid bright-white and blue-spectrum LEDs.

Chet Hanks Details Losing 27 Pounds in 3 Days at "Rock Bottom" Before Sobriety Journey

Chet hanks, the oldest son of tom hanks and rita wilson, detailed the scary moment in his life that led to his current two-year sobriety journey. .

Chet Hanks is opening up about a moment that kickstarted his sobriety journey.

On the second anniversary of becoming sober, the Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets star—who is son to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson —got candid on his journey, sharing details of the moment in his life that led him to taking the first step.

“This is my sobriety anniversary,” Chet said on an Aug. 14 episode of the MTV show , showing off his progress on a tracking app. “Two years ago today, I was coming off a three-day coke binge where I didn’t eat, sleep or barely drink any water for three days straight.”

The binge took place during a trip to Las Vegas, a moment that the 34-year-old described was a turning point.

“I lost 27 lbs in three days, so my disease is gnarly,” he added. “It’s not pretty. I went straight from Vegas, checked myself into rehab—again.”

And Chet—who detailed the story to castmates including Macy Gray and Tyler Posey —reflected on just how far he has come.

“Here I am, 31 years old, broke, strung out, sucked up, just skinny, just at rock bottom,” he noted of the Vegas trip. “I just knew, man, if I don’t change my life in a drastic way, either I’m not even going to be around or something bad, so bad, is going to happen that my life might as well be over—cause that’s where I was headed.”

Despite the dark place, Chet was able to work through it, and emphasized he—in his own words—is now having the “time of his f--king life.”

“Life is good,” he said. “God is great. That’s all I gotta say.”

After opening up on his personal milestone, Chet shared he felt it was a great way for him to mark the occasion with his castmates.

“It felt good,” he explained in a later confessional. “I feel like everyone got to know me better. We’re really like a family. They were all there to celebrate and support me being sober which really touches me.”

Couple Decides to 'Close Shop' After 10-Year Infertility Journey. One Month Later, They Get Huge Surprise (Exclusive)

Audrey Bolton's expected due date for her daughter is Nov. 16

journey lights year

  • Audrey Bolton and her husband, Crawford, struggled with infertility for 10 years
  • Audrey always wanted to be a mom, so the the couple ended up welcoming two children by adoption: Camden Ivey, 6, and Emmy James, 2
  • In January, Audrey learned she was pregnant and due in November
  • She's since shared about her infertility journey on TikTok, hoping to inspire others

Audrey Bolton and her husband, Crawford, had just cleaned out their attic of baby items.

After 10 years of unexplained infertility, the North Carolina couple — married in 2014 and parents to two children by adoption — decided in January to "close up shop." However, just one month after making this decision, Audrey began to feel unwell.

Initially, the 34-year-old thought her symptoms were related to her Crohn's disease, which she was diagnosed with nine months after her marriage. In 2019, she had approximately 18 inches of her small bowel removed. But as her condition worsened, Crawford, 33, suggested she take a pregnancy test just in case.

Audrey, who in 2017 had taken Femara — a medication used to induce ovulation in women with infertility — initially dismissed Crawford's suggestion, thinking she was unlikely to be pregnant.

"One night, (in April) while he was in the living room playing with the kids, I went to the restroom and saw the test lying on the counter," Audrey tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I thought, let me take this real quick, just to put my mind at ease."

A few minutes later, when she looked at the test, her jaw dropped.

"I've taken a lot of tests in my 10 years of marriage, and I've never seen one show a positive result so quickly. I was like, 'Oh my gosh.' "

Not long after, the expectant mom set up her phone in the bathroom and called Crawford, pretending something was wrong with the sink. When he entered the room, he saw Audrey holding up the positive test.

"He was as shocked as I was, especially because we had just had the conversation that we weren’t going to try anymore," she says. "It wasn’t even on my doctor's radar, which is the funny thing."

Audrey eventually posted the video of her husband’s reaction to TikTok , where it has garnered more than 1.3 million views. Since then, she has continued to open up about her fertility journey.

Audrey Bolton

While she had previously dabbled in posting on social media, Audrey had never publicly shared her fertility struggles; only those closest to her knew.

"I don't necessarily regret not sharing this earlier, but it definitely makes me realize we are not alone," she says. "You come in contact with people every day who are fighting that battle, whether they keep it silent or open up about it."

"It's heartbreaking to see how many people experience infertility, but at the same time, the number of people who say, 'You've given me hope,' or share their own stories of waiting 10, 15, or even 18 years for their miracle is incredible," she adds. "The main thing I like to tell people is you just can't lose hope."

Upon learning about her pregnancy, Audrey and Crawford shared the news with their children, Camden Ivey, 6, and Emmy James, 2, as well as their extended families.

While her parents have always loved their grandchildren, Audrey says there’s a unique excitement this time because they’ve never been present to experience the birth of one of their grandchildren before.

"It’s exciting to think about whether this baby will look like me or Crawford, and it’s special that Crawford will be present for the delivery since he wasn’t able to be in the delivery room with Emmy," she adds. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience these moments together."

Reflecting on her fertility journey, Audrey admits that when she first learned she was pregnant, her excitement was mixed with concern about whether her body could handle it. She also notes another challenge for the couple: starting over after having moved past the baby phase.

They had begun discussing travel plans and activities they couldn’t do when their kids were younger. "And then it’s like, bam, you’re starting over from scratch, and you’ve gotten rid of all your baby items. Holy moly, are we really doing this?" she says.

However, after her initial doctor's appointment, at which she was able to discuss her medical history and its potential impact on the pregnancy, her anxiety eased.

"Infertility is incredibly hard. And undergoing treatments, even basic ones, can make a negative result feel devastating. That’s why we shifted our focus to adoption," she says.

"We had initially wanted three children, but I remember discussing with Crawford last year that I didn’t think I could go through the adoption process again due to the emotional and mental toll. He agreed, saying he was happy with our two children. We have a boy and a girl, and life is good."

"Hearing the heartbeat during that appointment made me much more excited," she adds. "Since then, it’s been really, really good. I’ve been amazed at what my body has been able to do, and I’m very thankful for that."

In July, Audrey and Crawford revealed on social media that they will be welcoming a baby girl in November. The couple has already chosen a name, which Audrey says is a blend of their names.

Both of their older children have family names, so it was important for their newborn to have one as well. Audrey says, "After we had our two and had settled on family names, I thought, 'Okay, we’re done with that.' But then, bam, we had to go back to the drawing board."

A Year Walking As Way Opens

Stepping into the professional world as a Program Assistant with FCNL this year has been a Spirit-led journey. It’s been an opportunity to embrace growth in unfamiliar territory and discover how interpersonal connections can drive social change. Like many people of faith, I’ve been learning that it isn’t always clear what following the Light will mean at the start of a journey.

Graduating from Earlham College in May 2023, I was eager to join FCNL and learn from the approaches of Quaker lobbying. At Earlham I had learned about how social services, education, and institutional structures intersect within this country. I had a growing curiosity about how to live into my gifts while answering the call to work alongside others building a better world for all. Despite my enthusiasm, I was also worried about stepping away from the classrooms and intimate communities I had thrived in and moving to Washington, DC.

I felt grounded by a sense that FCNL was an important place for me to be in this moment.

These worries were about how I would live within this new and unfamiliar space – not simply my professional pursuits. I felt grounded by a sense that FCNL was an important place for me to be in this moment. My first week on the job, I joined our weekly Witness Wednesday Silent Reflection and was brought to tears as I felt that familiar sense of Light filling the space. The fear I was holding about this new job seemed inconsequential next to the open arms that welcomed me into this community.

In that first meeting - and throughout the months I have convened this group of insightful people - I saw each member intentionally show up as themselves and attentively care for the others gathering alongside them. Even though many of the friends who join this weekly worship are hundreds of miles away from one another, this group where “the zoom squares become a circle” has quickly become a spiritual home grounded in warm welcomes and deep reflections.

This group where “the zoom squares become a circle” has quickly become a spiritual home grounded in warm welcomes and deep reflections.

This was the first of many moments where I felt grounded by the presence of others in the work of building the world we seek at FCNL. No matter the difficulties of the present, we aim to not only look to the future but also build sustainable practices around meaningful connection.

2023-2024 Program Assistants with Heart Hands

I have had the honor to explore this experience with the six other program assistants in this year’s cohort. It’s been inspiring to work alongside these passionate young professionals, each bringing diverse perspectives from their faiths, Capitol Hill, and community activism. At FCNL’s Quaker Public Policy Institute and Annual Meeting in November, I got to share my journey on remaining true to my values while staying open to what others have to share.

Micah MacColl Nicholson and Sofia Guerra at Spring Lobby Weekend 2024

On the first night of Annual Meeting, Mary Lou Hatcher shared a quote by Niels Bohr: “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement, but the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” We can honor and learn from our community’s diversity, guiding us towards a world that embraces and uplifts everyone. These differences can move us deeper onto Spirit’s path.

As I have become more settled in this work, I have learned that whether over a year or a lifetime, there are openings all around us to support our individual and collective gifts.

I am still learning the different ways professional, spiritual, and personal purposes can deepen together when guided by listening to that inner calling, but what has become very clear over the past year is how critical, how necessary is the call to be present, to be open, and to be attentive to the world around us.

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

Parramatta light rail opening delayed until later in the year after testing reveals issues

The opening of the Parramatta light rail has been delayed after testing revealed issues.

The multi-billion-dollar project will now not start services until later this year.

What's next?

The line is expected to take tens of thousands of commuters, linking key precincts in Western Sydney.

The long-awaited opening of the Parramatta light rail has been delayed until later this year after a number of issues were discovered during testing of the system.

Earlier this month, Transport for NSW said it would be taking passengers within a few weeks.

In a statement, Transport Minister Jo Haylen said there were "kinks in the system" which needed to be "ironed out" before the light rail could start taking passengers.

"The testing process has identified some issues for the contractor and Transport for NSW to fix which is the whole point of the process," she said.

"One of the lessons we have learnt from the launch of the CBD and Eastern Suburbs Light Rail is that we do not want to be using passengers as guinea pigs. When we open we want to deliver a service which runs to timetable and is reliable.

"We have made substantial progress doing testing and commissioning of this light rail line but there is a bit more work to do."

The $2.8 billion was originally meant to start taking passengers at the end of 2023, but now will not start services until the end of 2024. ( Supplied )

'It has to be perfect'

Premier Chris Minns would not commit to a new opening date.

"When you roll out brand new transport infrastructure over an area that hasn't had it before, there's going to be complications and there will be some delays," he said.

"But we want to make sure that when you've got public transport that you expect tens of thousands of people to take every single day, it has to be perfect.

"Not kinda good, not close to good, 100 per cent perfect."

The delays to its construction frustrated retailers in the area, who claimed the works impacted their business trading.

Testing of the light rail started in mid-December last year.

Stage One of the $2.9 billion Parramatta Light Rail will connect Sydney's north-west (Carlingford) to its west (Westmead) via Parramatta's CBD, featuring 16 stops including the local hospital precinct, stadium, museum and university.

The New South Wales government estimates around 28,000 people will use the light rail system every day by 2026.

The delay comes just days after the new Metro City Line in Sydney finally started taking passengers, two weeks after its scheduled launch date.

Back to ‘Immigration system statistics, year ending June 2024’ content page .

This Accredited Official Statistics publication provides statistics describing the UK immigration system. This summary chapter provides a brief overview, with a selection of key statistics from each of the chapters in the full report.

The UK immigration system contains a wide range of Home Office activities including issuing short and long term visas to those outside of the UK, extensions and changes to visas, granting of settlement and citizenship to those already in the UK, providing safe and legal (humanitarian) routes of entry, as well as providing asylum and carrying out enforcement action. Figure 1 provides a summary of these different aspects of the immigration system.

Figure 1: Summary of the UK immigration system 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 , year ending June 2024

  • This diagram is a simplification and doesn’t include all parts of the immigration system, such as people crossing the border who do not require a visa, or irregular arrivals. Data in different parts of the immigration system is not always comparable.
  • Safe and legal (humanitarian) routes include visas granted on the Ukraine, Hong Kong BN(O) and family reunion routes, as well as refugee resettlement and relocation in the UK.
  • The EU settlement scheme ( EUSS ) figure relates to grants of settled status or pre-settled status, in the year ending June 2024.
  • Immigration detention relates to the number of people in detention on 30 June 2024.

Overview of people coming to the UK

The majority of the 128.4 million passenger arrivals in the UK in the year ending June 2024 were British nationals. Of the non-British arrivals, most will be short-term arrivals such as visitors, with smaller numbers arriving for other reasons (such as work, study and family).

In the year ending June 2024, 1.16 million visas were granted for work, study or family reasons (including dependants). In the same period, 38,784 people were detected arriving in the UK by irregular routes.

75,167 people were granted permission to come to the UK by safe and legal routes such as the Ukraine and BN(O) schemes, refugee resettlement and family reunion (note family reunion visas are included in the ‘Family visas’ category, not ‘Safe and legal’ in Figure 2) and 45,886 were granted ‘Other’ visas.

Figure 2: Number of visas granted to come to the UK by main category (excluding visitors and transit), and number of detected irregular arrivals, year ending June 2024 (main applicants and dependants)

Source: Entry clearance visa applications and outcomes – Vis_D02 , Asylum and resettlement summary tables – Asy_11 , Irregular migration to the UK - Irr_D01

  • ‘Other visas’ include settlement visas, temporary visas (exc. transit), EUSS family permits and some other family members coming to accompany others.
  • ‘Safe and legal’ includes out of country Ukraine and BN(O) schemes and refugee resettlement. It excludes family reunion visas which are included in ‘Family visas’.
  • Chart does not include visitors or transit visas, those coming to the UK who have indefinitely leave to remain or status on the EU Settlement Scheme, non-visa national visits, or undetected irregular arrivals.
