Self Guided Walking Tour Itineraries for 3 Days in Lisbon

If you’re visiting Portugal’s capital, we think 3 days in Lisbon should be your minimum to really enjoy the city.

We had the opportunity to stay and explore Lisboa for a full month and absolutely loved it. To help you plan your Lisbon trip, we narrowed down the best sights to a 3 day itinerary through three different self-guided walking tours.

Using Our Lisbon Self-Guided Itinerary: Your Options

Though very hilly, Lisbon is very walkable, and we hope you can use this guide to have 3 perfect days in Lisbon. But don’t worry if you only have one or two days in Lisbon.

You can still fit everything from the three itineraries into two days , provided you’re in good shape and don’t care to spend time at museums or attractions with long lines.

If you’re limited to one day in Lisbon, then we’d recommend prioritizing the first two itineraries (the green and blue points on the map).

What you need to know about transportation and walking in Lisbon

Before we dive into our 3 day itinerary for Lisbon, there are a few things you should know to have the best experience.

Lisbon is a very walkable city, but it’s also very hilly. We exercise daily so the steep inclines and endless stairs in this City of Seven Hills weren’t a problem, but we know they’re a challenge for some.

Folks with mobility issues will sometimes be able to find public elevators or funiculars (fees may apply) to help overcome the changes in elevation when getting from one place to another.

It’s also important to have shoes with some degree of traction on the soles because many of the sidewalks are made from smooth limestone rocks that can get slippery . If you’re headed downhill, be extra careful on the white rocks!

If you’re doing our 3 days in Lisbon itinerary to a T, then you’ll need to take public transit at least twice – to and from Belem on the third day.

If you plan to do additional sightseeing, like the optional ride on the historic tram 28 on day one and visiting some of our bonus points of interest, then you might want to consider a public transit pass instead of paying per journey.

Lisbon’s public transportation includes underground and above ground metros, buses, historic trams, new electric trams, funiculars, ferries, and regional trains.

You can purchase a rechargeable Via Viagem transit card which works on all of these transit options – but note that you can only have one “type” of ticket on your card at a time. Pre-paying on the Via Viagem card will give you  a discount on the fare you would pay onboard (and getting tickets on board isn’t always an option).  Click here to learn more about Via Viagem cards.

If you’re planning to take public transportation as well as visit some museums or other paid attractions, then you can save time and money with the Lisbon card .

Where to stay in Lisbon

The explosion of tourism in Lisbon has had an unfortunate effect  on housing in the city. New hotels and vacation rental companies have bought out historic properties and driven up housing prices, pushing out many locals who can no longer to afford to live in their old neighborhoods.

Please be conscientious as you choose your accommodations and support small, locally owned businesses whenever possible.

In our opinion, the best areas to stay are within 1.5 miles of Praça do Comércio where you can walk to just about everything. The closer in you are, the fewer hills you’ll probably have to climb. Of course, public transit is also an option if you stay further out.

We found a locally-owned Airbnb apartment near the Intendente metro station. It was a nice, downhill walk to the town center through a multi-cultural neighborhood.

Other neighborhoods like Alfama, Baixa, Bairro Alto, and Rossio are very nice but may be a bit more spendy. We know several people who enjoy staying in the Belem area, though it requires more time on the metro or tram to visit most attractions.

Day One: Lisboa Centro Historico Walk

The first day’s itinerary covers much of Lisbon’s historic center. This walking tour can be made in a loop, starting at any point, and is just as effectively done in reverse.

Alternatively, you can ride the popular Tram 28 from its initial stop on Praça Martim Moniz (p raça , meaning plaza or main square), which passes through Alfama (and most of day 2’s itinerary) before heading west.

The trams get very crowded in the tourist district and even the waiting line at the first stop can get quite long by mid morning. It’s highly recommended to go first thing in the morning and grab a seat at the initial stop.

You can ride Tram 28 as far as Campo de Ourique, but the market opens later in the day, so I would recommend getting off at the Assembly of the Republic if you want to check out Flor da Selva’s coffee roastery (an option stop, depicted in yellow). Otherwise, get off at Praça Luís de Camões.

Tip: It’s cheaper to pre-pay (charge your transit card in advance) at a metro station than to pay the full fare onboard the tram.

1. Rossio Station – Lisbon City Center

Rossio station and the nearby metro stop with the same name, are a central hub for transportation in and around Lisbon.

From here, you can either enter the train station and take the escalators up to reach the street, Calçada do Carmo, and follow that to Convento do Carmo. Or you can stay more or less at sea level and find your way to Rua do Carmo, continuing until you see the Elevador de Santa Justa in one of the side alleys. You’ll know it when you see it!

2. Elevador de Santa Justa

Rua do Carmo is also a nice street to explore for shopping.

If you prefer not to take the elevator, you can hike up nearby streets to reach the old convent. Then from the convent, you can get a peek at the top of the elaborate elevator through the Bellalisa Elevator Restaurant’s rooftop deck.

3. Convento do Carmo

This is one of the best examples in the city of just how devastating the earthquake was to the city. You can even see how the arched doorway around the side was split and repaired.

From the convent and elevator, feel free to explore the grid of streets that make up Lisbon’s tourist center as much or as little as you like. There are plenty of shops and restaurants catering to tourists.

This area gets quite crowded so we tended to avoid it. Just eventually make your way to Rua Augusta so you don’t miss the next stop.

4. Arco da Rua Augusta

For a view of the river and the plaza, you can take a lift up to the clock and climb stairs to the top (3.50 euros, free with Lisbon Card ).

6. A Vida Portuguesa Gift Shop

This carefully curated made-in-Portugal shop showcases high quality products created in Portugal. Forget the cheap trinkets shops that can be found on every corner of Lisbon.

This store has four locations throughout town, and it’s the only souvenir shop you’ll need. From stationary to handcrafts to foodstuffs, the best of the best is here.

Even if you’re not shopping, take a peek inside to admire Portuguese artistry.

7. Manteigaria and Praça Luís de Camões

There’s no seating at this location, so order your pasteis to go, and enjoy them fresh and warm while people-watching on the plaza.

The narrow streets directly North of Praça Luís de Camões are full of charming little restaurants of the Chiado neighborhood . Feel free to wander back and forth as you make your way uphill toward the viewpoint.

8. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Below the  miradouro is a funicular that we’ll follow from the top of the hill, Bairro Alto, to the neighborhoods down below.

9. Ascensor da Glória

We preferred to walk and take photos of the murals that line the path.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll see the big Praça dos Restauradores out in front of you. Cross the square to reach another tasty treat…

10. Fábrica da Nata

Be sure to check the workshop window to catch the pastries being made. At the time of this writing, pasteis are 1.20 euro each.

Bonus: Mercado da Baixa

One last place to check on your walking tour is the Praça da Figueira, which sometimes has a temporary craft and/or food market set up in the middle of the square.

Day Two: Miradouros and Alfama Walk

This walking tour itinerary would be best to do on a Tuesday or a Saturday when the giant Feira da Ladra market is open. Again, you can really start at any point and follow it in either direction.

Day Three: Belém and LX Factory

If you’re staying in central Lisbon, you’ll want to take public transportation out to Belém (it’s also nice and flat along the river if you prefer to ride a bike). It was easiest for us to take the modern electric tram from Praça da Figueira (it’s initial stop) and ride it to the Largo da Princesa stop, just a couple blocks North of the Belém Tower.

Tip: Tram fares are cheaper if you load your Via Viagem card from a metro stop rather than buy onboard the tram – or get unlimited free access with a Lisbon Card .

There’s a long walk from Belém to the LX Factory, but fewer places to visit and fewer changes in elevation than the other days. You can always hop on a bus or tram between the two ends of this itinerary, if you prefer. And if entrepreneurial-hipster-urban revival spaces aren’t really your thing, you can always skip the LX Factory.

Note that the LX Factory hosts the LX Market on Sunday afternoons, so when possible, we would suggest completing this walking tour on a Sunday for the best experience.

Thanks for your question, Ron. Yes, zapping or pay-as-you-go is indeed an option now. It is valid on buses, trains, trams, funiculars, the metro and ferries. There’s a minimum top up of 3 euros. If you plan to make more than five single trips per day, a daily pass is still the cheapest option. Also note that you won’t get a refund for unused zap credit on the card. The one type at a time still applies as well. I.e., once you’ve chosen zapping (or day pass or single tickets), you cannot change to another type of fare until the previous one is used up on the card.

1 – Igreja da Madalena

The Alfama free walking tour starts in the West of Alfama, at the Igreja da Madalena.

In addition to seeing the church, you’ll also see the iconic yellow tram , going right in front of the church.

2 – Lisbon Cathedral

We then move on to our second spot of the day, the Lisbon Cathedral, a 2 minutes walk away. We’ll follow the trams track, so that’s even more opportunities for you to see the tram passing by.

Feel free to go inside the Lisbon Cathedral, the entry is free .

3 – Palacete Chafariz d’El Rei

The 3rd stop of the day is the Palacete Chafariz d’El Rei, a stunning Moorish building from the 19th century. The facade is made of pink and blue tiles, truly a hidden architecture gem in Lisbon.

Bonus : check out the Arco de Jesus while on your way to Chafariz d’El Rei, a beautiful hidden passage covered with blue tiles.

4 – Igreja de São Miguel

Before moving on to your next spot, you can take a few extra minutes to go next to the Tejo river; I always love relaxing for a while, with the sound of the waves gently clapping along the docks.

Our next spot is the Igreja de São Miguel , a 2 minutes walk away.

More than the church itself ( which is beautiful, by the way ), you’ll now be exploring the classic Alfama , going up to the heights of Lisbon.

Once you’ve rested in the square in front of the church for a while, make your way to the right of the church, all the way up the steps.

Don’t forget to turn back when you get up the stairs for a nice view over the church and the streets .

5 – Miradouro das Portas do Sol

If you keep going up the steps, you’ll reach the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.

“Miradouro” is “viewpoint” in Portuguese – if you see a Miradouro sign, follow it, you’ll usually get a pretty nice view!

The Miradouro das Portas do Sol offers the best view over the Alfama neighborhood. To the east, you’ll see the white dome of the National Pantheon , and the Saint Vincent church on the left. To the south, you’ll have an unobstructed view over the Tejo river.

6 – Secret Lisbon Tunnel

Lisbon is also famous for its street art; after enjoying the views over the city, we’ll now go underground in our search for street murals.

Well, not underground underground, but in a tunnel.

You’ll discover the secret tunnel: History of Lisbon Mural by Nuno Saraiva . The inside of the tunnel is covered in drawings, depicting the history of Lisbon.

7 – Street Art Amália Rodrigues by Vhils

We’ll go right next to a second street art spot in Alfama: Amália Rodrigues by Vhils. Don’t worry, it’s only a 2 minutes walk to reach this spot.

8 – Miradouro do Recolhimento

Onwards to our last street art spot of this free Lisbon walking tour. To reach the Miradouro do Recolhimento, you’ll go through an abandoned building , all covered in street art!

When you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with a grand view of the city.

Bonus : there is often way less tourists in this spot than in the other miradouros

9 – Castelo de São Jorge

Right on the south west border of the Alfama district is the Castelo de São Jorge. It’s a massive medieval castle , built in the 11th century by the Moors.

Go inside and explore the impressive ruins of the castle, before moving on to the last spot on our list.

10 – Miradouro do Castelo de São Jorge

There it is: the last stop on our free Lisbon walking tour.

You can only access this viewpoint by going through the castle; it’s located on a hill, the highest point of the Alfama district.

At the viewpoint, you’ll have a different view from all the miradouros we visited earlier on our walking tour: a view to the west .

From up there, you’ll see the whole city going up to the Tagus river, all the way to the 25 de April bridge in the background.

1 – The Combatants Overseas Monument

We’ll begin our second Lisbon free walking tour in the West of Belém, and we’ll make our way towards the East.

The first spot is the Monumento aos Combatentes do Ultramar ( the Combatants Overseas monument ). It sets the tone for the visit of Belém.

The monument is a memorial to the more of 9,000 soldiers dead during the Overseas War (1961-1974).

You’ll find an eternal flame burning under the monument; the names of the dead soldiers are written on the walls all around the monument.

2 – Belém Tower

Our second spot is probably the most famous location in Belém : the Torre de Belém ( Belém Tower ).

The medieval tower was once an important part of the city defense system ; today, you can visit the tower, and even go on the rooftop terrace for stunning view over the Tejo river.

3 – Belém Lighthouse

We’ll stay on the river banks for visiting the next spot: Belém Lighthouse . It’s a short 8 minutes walk, along the shore, to reach the spot.

The walk in itself is pretty nice; walking next to the water, under the sun, watching the lighthouse grow taller as you get closer.

4 – Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Right next to the lighthouse is our next spot, Padrão dos Descobrimentos ( Monument to the Discoveries ). You’ll see the monument from the lighthouse, as it’s pretty massive (50 meters / 164 feet).

The monument is a tribute to the Portuguese explorers of the Age of Discovery . Make sure to go to the other side of the monument, where you’ll see more statues of famous explorers.

Bonus : you can go to the top of the monument for a view over the Belém neighborhood (6€ adult / 3€ child)

5 – Praça do Império

Our next stop is literally across the street: just cross the street, and you’ll be in Praça do Império .

The square was built for the Portuguese World Exposition in 1940, held for the celebration of the 800 years since Portugal became independent.

The square is actually a huge garden , made of 32 mosaic coat of arms. Enjoy strolling through the square, and make your way to the next spot, for a well deserved break.

6 – Pastéis de Belém

We’re already half way through our free walking tour of Lisbon in Belém; it’s time for a break !

Exit the park through the north entrance, and take a right. Follow the road for 2 minutes, and you’ll reach a spot with many buildings.

There are a lot of restaurants and places where you can eat there. I highly recommend going to Pastéis de Belém .

If you haven’t yet eaten any Pastéis de Nata in Portugal, it’s time to try! The little custard tart is a Portuguese specialty, and if you love sweet food, you’re in for a treat.

7 – Jardim de Belém

If the weather allows ( well you’re in Lisbon, it’s probably going to be sunny! ), order your pastéis as a takeaway, and cross the street to reach the Jardim de Belém .

Enjoy your little break by sitting down on the grass, while munching on your snack . When you’re ready to get going again, move on to your next spot!

8 – Church Santa Maria de Belém

The Igreja Santa Maria de Belém is the tall building you saw earlier when exiting the Praça do Império; it’s now time to visit it!

If you were impressed by the beauty of the church from the outside, wait until you get in: it’s insanely gorgeous !

9 – Jerónimos Monastery

Aaaand we’re now getting to our last spot on our Belém waking tour! The Jerónimos Monastery is right next to the Santa Maria church, and definitely worth a visit.

There is often long lines to visit this jewel of architecture, so make sure you plan enough time for walking around Lisbon. If you’re short on time, strolling along the street and seeing the monument from outside is a possible alternative.

1 – Monumento aos Restauradores

We’ll start our Lisbon walking tour in the north of the city center, at the Praça dos Restauradores .

At the center of the square, you’ll find the Monumento aos Restauradores , a monument to celebrate the Portuguese Restoration War victory.

Bonus : check out the iconic Gloria tram from the top of the street, on the square (address: Calçada da Glória 6, 1250-144 Lisboa, Portugal)

2 – Praça do Rossio

Our second spot is also a square, a 4 minutes walk away from the first square. The square is famous for its optical illusion on the ground.

On the photo above, you can see on the top left our next 2 spots in this free Lisbon walking tour: the Santa Justa lift on the far left, and the Carmo Convent right next to it.

Bonus : avoid the restaurants on the square (tourist traps), but check out the tiny shops on the square for good pastries and coffee

3 – Carmo Convent

Let’s head to our next spot, the Carmo Convent , that you saw from the plaza. The convent looks impressive from the outside, but it’s even more special from the inside.

It’s one of the rare places where you can be both inside a monument and outside at the same time. The convent was partially destroyed during the 1755 Lisbon earthquake , which made it really unique.

4 – Santa Justa lift

Probably one of the most famous spots in Lisbon, the Santa Justa lift . It’s a stunning structure, standing above the Lisbon skyline.

If you want to go up the lift, make sure you get there early, because it gets crowded pretty fast.

Bonus : You can access the top for free from the Top Entrance , next to the Carmo Convent.

5 – Arco da Rua Augusta

To reach the next spot, you’ll go through the Baixa district: the classic Lisbon city center, with recent architecture (18th century).

At the end of the Rua Augusta, you’ll walk under a massive stone arch, the Arco da Rua Augusta .

Bonus : you can go on top of the arch, for one of the best views over the Baixa district

6 – Praça do Comércio

The Rua Augusta opens up on the biggest square in Lisbon, the Praça do Comércio.

Walk to the center of the square, to see the grand statue of King José I . Make sure you go all the way to the shore, and check out the tiny beach Playita del Muelle de las Columnas.

Tip : avoid shopping and eating in the area, it’s really overpriced. Wait until the next spots!

7 – Praça do Municipio

And the next spot is… a square, you guessed it! The Lisbon city center is full of stunning squares, and this one is no exception.

The Praça do Municipio (Municipal Square) is surrounded by incredible buildings : the City Hall, the Appeal Court, and the Ministry of the Sea.

8 – Secret Pink Street

To reach our next spot, we’ll walk on the Arsenal Street, along the Courthouse. A quick walk (4 minutes), that will take us to one of the many Lisbon hidden gems .

As you can see above, the hidden gem is a pink street . It doesn’t go on for very long, but it’s such a cool street ! The pink on the floor leads all the way under this yellow arch and through the other side.

9 – Praça de São Paulo

Whaaaaat? Another square! That’s the last one we’ll visit on our walking tour in Lisbon city center.

The Praça de São Paulo is on our way to the next spot, so you won’t even have to walk a long way to see it.

On the square, you’ll find the Igreja de São Paul (Saint Paul church), which is worth a visit if you have the time. The painted ceiling of the church is incredible – I definitely didn’t expect it!

Bonus : stop at the cute little kiosk on the square to grab a drink and a snack

10 – Ascensor da Bica

It’s time to see an icon of Lisbon: the yellow tram ! While the famous yellow tram number 28 runs in the Alfama district, there is also one in the city center.

The Ascensor da Bica was originally a cable car , but it’s now electrified; it runs like a tram. It goes all the way up to Bairro Alto.

Go up the street to see the tram at different points in the street. Don’t forget to look back after going up for a while, for a nice view over the river.

11 – Miradouro de Santa Catarina

We’ll end our Lisbon free walking tour by going to a miradouro ; the Miradouro de Santa Catarina is right next to the Bica street, only 2 minutes away.

The viewpoint offers a nice view over the Tejo river and the suspension bridge in the estuary. It’s the perfect spot to end your walking tour: grab a drink and enjoy the view!

Hi Linda! I strongly recommend going on mid-May-June, or in the beginning of September. The weather is very good, so you’ll be able to stroll around the city and enjoy drinks on a terrace without sweating too much (July-August are very crowded and weather quite hot).

This tour is very efficient when it comes to discovering the city and a great choice if you are short on time.

However, to visit Alfama, this tour has to sacrifice time in the main downtown neighborhoods and does not cover Alfama as in-depth as tours that are focused on Alfama. 

They average 5 out of 5 stars on both Google and TripAdvisor.

Self-Guided Exploration Game

There is a self-guided treasure hunt game you can use to discover the area on your own as well.

This 2-hour game puts you in the role of a private investigator solving a mystery, and along the way, you'll learn about some of the most notable locations in the city.

Located just to the east of the downtown area, both Alfama and Mouraria are some of the most beautiful and historic districts in the city.

Here’s our guide to seven of the best walking trails in Lisbon!

1. Monsanto Forest Park Trail

• Starts – Percurso Volta do Planalto (as it is called on Google Maps – This is also known as the Blue Trail on AllTrails if you can download the app)
• Ends – Percurso Volta do Planalto 
• Length – 7.7 km
• Duration – 2-3 hours
• Difficulty – Easy
• Scenery – As Lisbon’s largest green expanse, Monsanto Forest Park is akin to an urban oasis, truly the green lungs of Lisbon, and offers walkers a refreshing retreat into nature. This loop trail guides you through a dense forest of pines and eucalyptus, interspersed with playgrounds and picnic areas, making it ideal for family outings. The paths are well-maintained and lead to several lookouts that offer sweeping views of the city and the Tagus River below. Beyond the rich natural scenery, the park is dotted with historical and cultural relics including the remnants of ancient fortifications.

2. Lisbon Waterfront (Cais do Sodré to Belém)

• Starts – Cais do Sodré Metro Station
• Ends – Torre de Belém
• Length – 6 km
• Duration – 1.5-2 hours
• Scenery – This picturesque path stretches along the scenic riverfront from Cais do Sodré to Belém, passing by some of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks. As you walk, you’ll stroll right under the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge and straight by the historical Belém Tower, with several spots to stop and enjoy the riverside ambience. The path is lined with cafes and museums, providing plenty of opportunities to relax and soak in the riverside atmosphere.

The trail is particularly magical as the sun casts a golden hue over the water and the landmarks during sunset, including the Discoveries Monument and the MAAT museum. The vibrant atmosphere here, with joggers, cyclists, and families meandering by, creates a lively and engaging environment, perfect for experiencing Lisbon’s dynamic waterfront.

3. Alfama to Graça Historical Walk

• Starts – Alfama (perhaps starting in front of the Chafariz d’El-Rei – R. Cais de Santarém 23)
• Ends – Miradouro da Graça (also known as Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen)
• Length – 3 km
• Duration – 1-1.5 hours
• Difficulty – Moderate
• Scenery – This trail winds its way through Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter, known for its narrow, labyrinthine streets and the wistful strains of fado music emanating from traditional restaurants. As you ascend towards Graça, the views open up to reveal a panoramic view of the city, showcasing the red-tiled roofs and the majestic São Jorge Castle atop its hill.

The final destination, Graça, offers not only breathtaking views from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte but also a glimpse into the local way of life with its quaint cafes and antique shops. The contrast between the historic architecture and the vibrant street art found here encapsulates the essence of Lisbon—where the old seamlessly blends with the new.

4. Seven Hills of Lisbon Trail

• Starts – St. Catarina – Hill #1 (then moving clockwise starting in the southwest of the city) – (Chagas, Sant’ana, São Roque, Santo André, São Jorge)
• Ends – São Vicente – Hill #7
• Length – 10 km
• Duration – 3-4 hours (and even more depending on if you want to stop in cafés along the way)
• Difficulty – Challenging
• Scenery – Embark on a journey across Lisbon’s legendary seven hills, and you’ll discover why this city is often likened to a living museum. Each hill offers a unique perspective, featuring different slices of Lisbon’s history and culture. From the gardens of São Pedro de Alcântara to the quaint and quiet corners of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Viewpoint, the city unfolds in layers of stunning vistas. This trail not only challenges your stamina but rewards you with the most comprehensive views of the urban landscape. Traversing these hills, you encounter a mix of majestic churches, historic residential quarters, and lively marketplaces. Bring your shoes with your best grip for this one and do not attempt this during the rain.

5. Parque das Nações Promenade

• Starts – Parque Infantil
• Ends – Jardins do Tejo
• Length – 4.7 km
• Difficulty – Easy
• Scenery – The Parque das Nações area represents the modern face of Lisbon, with its renovation completed in time for the 1998 World Expo. This promenade features striking contemporary architecture like the Vasco da Gama Tower and the Lisbon Oceanarium. The trail is a favorite for both tourists and locals giving you a flat and well-paved path with spectacular views of the Tagus. The cable cars overhead add a unique element to the landscape. While you won’t see any trees on this walk, the wide streets and inspiring views of the horizon are refreshing.

6. Sintra-Cascais Natural Park Coastal Trail

• Starts – Azenhas do Mar (Azenhas do Mar – Praia das Maçãs – Praia Grande – Praia da Adraga – Praia da Ursa)
• Ends – Cabo da Roca
• Length – 11 km (one way)
• Duration – 4-5 hours
• Scenery – About a one-hour drive from central Lisbon is our starting point for this hike, Azenhas do Mar. This trail takes you along the rugged coastline of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The path wends through dense maritime pine forest before emerging onto cliffs that offer awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic Ocean. The dramatic landscape is a reminder of nature’s power with the rocks sculpted by the wind and the crashing waves below.

This trail also takes you through Portugal’s coastal ecology. The area is rich in biodiversity and home to numerous bird species and native flora. The endpoint at Cabo da Roca, Europe’s westernmost point, will give you a sense of accomplishment and a place to reflect on the vastness of the ocean and the beauty of the Portuguese coastline. You can also take a rideshare or taxi back from Cabo da Roca to Lisbon or ride over to Cascais and take the train to Cais do Sodré back from there. 

7. Estrela to Campo de Ourique Market Trail

• Starts – Jardim da Estrela
• Ends – Mercado de Campo de Ourique
• Length – 4 km
• Duration – 1-2 hours
• Scenery – Ready for a cityside walk? This pleasant journey starts in the historic Estrela district known for its grand Basilica and the leafy Jardim da Estrela. The garden is a perfect example of Romanticism in landscape architecture with its winding paths, exotic plants, and ponds. As you leave the park, the trail takes you through the charming streets of Campo de Ourique, a neighborhood famous for its traditional architecture and local boutiques.

The highlight and fitting end for this trail is the Campo de Ourique Market, where you can sample a wide array of ethnic cuisine including Portuguese favorites such as bifana sandwiches.

Each trail offers a distinct slice of Lisbon, inviting walkers to explore its many facets. From historical paths winding through ancient neighborhoods to scenic routes along lush parks and dramatic coastlines, these trails provide a full experience of Lisbon’s charms. How Black travelers are reclaiming Portugal

Despite its role in the birth of the transatlantic slave trade, Lisbon is drawing Black Americans looking to escape racism at home.

In Lisbon ’s bairro das novas nações , the neighborhood of new nations, each street is named after a former Portuguese colony: Rua de Angola, Rua de Moçambique, Rua da Guiné, Rua de Cabo Verde.

“Ah, Cabo Verde,” I say to my guide, Djuzé Neves, “your homeland.” Though that’s not entirely accurate—Neves was born and raised in Lisbon—his parents hail from Santiago Island, the largest in the Cape Verdean archipelago. Climate refugees fleeing drought, they found solace in Lisbon’s embrace.

For Neves, this neighborhood embodies more than just geography; it’s a beacon of community-driven resilience. As a board member of Batoto Yetu , an organization nurturing African heritage among underprivileged youth, Neves invests his time in cultivating cultural pride.

I’ve come to Lisbon exactly for neighborhoods like novas nações, a liberating space to escape the rising tide of racial and political stress I’ve been experiencing in the United States. I’m not alone.

On social media, countless Black travelers share tales of feeling marginalized and impotent in the face of systemic racism and police brutality, prompting a surge in overseas travel in search of historical significance, cultural diversity, and a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s not new, this practice of African Americans traveling to foreign lands for a respite from the challenges and frustrations that come with being Black in America. In the 1920s and ’30s, the Soviet Union became an attractive place to visit and explore because it promised a raceless, classless society . In Lisbon and other cities such as Paris , Dubai , and Amsterdam , travelers find memorials and tours that acknowledge the trauma of the slave trade and programs that explore cultural heritage.

Where the slave trade started

I meet Madisyn Brown , a Black 22-year-old video essayist, on the flight from New York to Lisbon. She tells me that her great-great-grandmother was from Portugal. “But no one in my family has been to Portugal despite that connection,” she says.

On the final day of her trip, I reconnect with Brown for a drink on Avenida da Liberdade, a sun-drenched, tree-lined street with wide sidewalks featuring black, white, and sometimes gray limestones mosaics, called calçada Portuguesa . Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon’s version of Paris’ Champs-Élysées, London’s Regent’s Street, and Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive.

Brown says her time in Lisbon has been magical. “I felt like a normal person walking through the world,” she says. “I never felt like I didn’t belong. I’m going to miss the positive energy here. America can be a really tough place to live.”

The irony isn’t lost on me—seeking solace in a city with ties to the very institution of slavery that shaped our history. We’ve learned to associate many European nations with colonialism, but Americans are not as familiar with Lusophone culture and history.

Many of us were unaware that Portugal was not just a participant in colonialism; it pioneered the trade in chattel slavery. In 1444, the small nation began transporting sub-Saharan Africans to Europe. In 1526, Portugal transported its first shipment of enslaved people to Brazil, effectively launching the transatlantic slave trade.

Yet, perhaps our modern “return” to Portugal signifies a crucial step in healing, a reclaiming of collective joy and freedom.

Toby Thompkins, a recent ex-pat from New York, sees Lisbon as a place of reconciliation. “I think that’s what a lot of Black Americans are tapping into,” he says, adding there’s an openness to dialogue and a sense of infinite possibilities, reminiscent of America in the 1970s—a time of acknowledging and confronting racism.  

How to experience Lisbon  

To address its role in the slave trade, Lisbon’s government, in association with Batoto Yetu, has erected more than 20 historical street markers to honor the contributions of Africans and their descendants in 2024.  

Travelers can find the plaques near the riverside Terreiro do Paço , where enslaved people disembarked from the ships that carried them there from Africa, or in places such as Rossio Square , which, for centuries, has been a traditional gathering place for Black people in Lisbon. It is also the location of Igreja de São Domingos , the church where enslaved Africans were taken for their requisite baptism.

In the Largo São Domingos neighborhood, which has a sizable African population, a stone bust was unveiled of Paulino Jose da Conceiçao, a formerly enslaved African who emigrated to Portugal from Brazil in 1832. Da Conceiçao, also known as Pai Paulino, was a social justice advocate and worked to improve the working and living conditions of Africans in Lisbon. Also in the works is a memorial to the victims of slavery, the first of its sort there.

In the coastal city of Lagos, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, about three hours by train from Lisbon, visitors can explore a small museum dedicated to the history of slavery in the town. The museum, Mercado de Escravos , Market of Slaves, is situated on the site where the very first group of enslaved Africans was sold.
