Had occasion to pay 2 visits to Nidd Hall. The first night for a meal, which was delicious, the second to watch their floor show. Excellant entertainment, very professional.Kathryn has a great voice and stage presance, while Jay was faultless. They all had boundless energy. The hotel, grounds and amenities are second to none.

I have put Kathryn and Jay’s names forward so they can be recognised in line with our rewards and recognition scheme and your letter is being displayed for our teams to see. It was lovely that you got chance to appreciate our gorgeous gardens. Thank you again and we look forward to your next visit. Julie Julie Bracken Guest Service Manager

This was our first trip to a Warner Hotel, Dave on reception guided us through check-in and was a joy to deal with throughout our stay. the room we had ( one of the newly converted rooms in the East wing ) was excellent, lovely bathroom, very comfortable bed, large dressing table & patio area which was well worth the additional cost. The restaurant service was first class and special mention must go to Linus who really went out of his way to look after us, the food was very well cooked, well presented and we enjoyed every meal here. Cris the Barman was excellent too and the cocktails were very tasty. All in all a really nice break, highly recommended.

First time at Nidd Hall and what a wonderful, relaxing weekend it was. Check in was quick and efficient. The room was spacious and comfortable, the restaurant offered both buffet and waiter service and the food was of an excellent standard. Our waiter, Juan, was very attentive and friendly without being too familiar and helped to make mealtimes very enjoyable. The fine dining in the Terrace restaurant was of the very highest quality. The food was perfectly cooked and presented. The team were first class and their friendliness and efficiency made for a very enjoyable experience. The bar staff were of an high standard too and I must single out Chris for special praise for his wonderful cocktails. The entertainment was also of an excellent and very professional standard. All in all a very relaxing, enjoyable weekend in beautiful surroundings. I would recommend Nidd Hall to anyone.

This was not my first break at Nidd Hall Hotel. And i certainly will visit again. You receive a warm welcome as soon as you step in to the reception area. Beautiful rooms to sleep in, Exceptional gardens to walk in,Prompt and efficient service from the tea rooms. Special mention to Julie from tea rooms and Horatio house keeping Cris from the bar. But i must say all employees gave a warm welcome. Visit the terrace restaurant for that extra special occasion. Well worth the small supplement. Great entertainment. Would highly recommend this hotel. Ann

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

lynns travel holidays and day trips

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

lynns travel holidays and day trips

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

Memorial Day road trip ahead. Here are the best and worst times to go in Florida, the Southeast

lynns travel holidays and day trips

Memorial Day is rapidly approaching, which means millions will be hitting the roadways or skies for a quick weekend getaway.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This is a 4% increase over last year, with experts noting this comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

When is Memorial Day 2024? When is Memorial Day weekend 2024?

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Why we celebrate: What to know about federal holiday, what’s open in Florida

Which will be more congested for Memorial Day travel — roadways or airports?

According to AAA, road trips are expected to set a record with 38.4 million people projected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.

Renting a car for your road trip? Florida-based rental company  Hertz  says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand, with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

But airports are also bracing for a large surge of travelers next weekend.

Is Memorial Day a busy airport day?

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11," AAA said in its press release.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly two million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

When are the best and worst times to travel on Memorial Day?

For those planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, transportation data and insights provider INRIX offers the best times to get on the road.

Experts advise drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said.

What are the busiest travel days around Memorial Day?

Floridians beware: Other states are heading to Florida to vacation

Whether Florida residents plan on traveling or relaxing at home all weekend, they might want to be aware of the thousands of others joining them.

AAA compiled a list of the top domestic travel destinations for Memorial Day weekend, with three Florida cities making the list:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Seattle, Washington
  • New York City, New York
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Anaheim/Los Angeles, California
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Anchorage, Alaska
  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Miami, Florida
  • Boston, Massachusetts

"This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed," AAA writes.

CBS News

Memorial Day weekend 2024 could break travel records. Here's what to know.

D espite another month of spring technically still ahead, travelers often view Memorial Day weekend  as an unofficial kickoff to the summer season — and traffic notoriously reflects that . Based on current forecasts, travel around the upcoming 2024 holiday next Monday, May 27, is not expected to relieve Memorial Day of its bad reputation for drivers and airline passengers. They may actually find themselves on some of the busiest highways and flights they've seen in decades.

The American Automobile Association, or AAA, warned of potentially unprecedented congestion on roads this weekend, along with airports that could be even more crowded than in years past. The organization, which looks at various economic factors and partners with other groups to project travel conditions, announced earlier this month that an estimated 43.8 million people across the United States would likely travel at least 50 miles from Thursday to Monday. That would mark a 4% increase in overall travel compared with 2023, according to AAA. It would also come close to the busiest Memorial Day weekend on record, which happened in 2005 when 44 million people left home for the holiday.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of the travel division at AAA, in a statement. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

For those planning to hit the road or board a plane this weekend, here's what to know.

Prepare to hit traffic

Memorial Day weekend in 2024 is expected to set a new record for road trips, according to AAA. The organization has estimated that 38.4 million people will travel in cars over the course of the weekend, which would be the biggest number recorded around this particular holiday since the group first started keeping track of Memorial Day travel patterns in 2000.

Car rental company Hertz told AAA that demand for rentals this year will be highest in Atlanta, Boston, Las Vegas and Orlando, with most renters scheduled to pick up their cars on Thursday and Friday.

In general, drivers hoping to beat the traffic, or at least face less of it, should avoid the roads during afternoon hours on any day of the long weekend. Citing transit data from INRIX , AAA said the worst times to travel by car , in any U.S. time zone, are between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, and between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday.

The best times to drive will be before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on Thursday, before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m. on Friday, before 1 p.m. or after 6 p.m. on Saturday, before 1 p.m. on Sunday, and after 7 p.m. on Monday.

Airports will be crowded

Airports across the country are bracing for another spike in travelers, following an upward trend in flights booked around Memorial Day since last year's air travel numbers exceeded pre-pandemic levels. An estimated 3.51 million people are projected to fly this weekend, according to AAA, which is up from 3.35 million who traveled on planes to their destinations last year. If as many people fly as expected, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when AAA said 3.64 million people caught flights for the holiday.

United Airlines said more than 500,000 people are expected to fly each day from Thursday to Tuesday, which would be the airline's busiest Memorial Day weekend on record. Delta said 3 million people are expected to fly on its planes over that six-day period and American Airlines said it expects 3.9 million people to fly over the weekend.

Public transportation tips

Any of the projected 1.9 million people who use public transit systems to get to where they're going this weekend can plan ahead, too. INRIX projections show metro riders will face a degree of congestion in major cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Oregon, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa and Washington, D.C. Congestion on metros is expected to peak in those places in the late afternoon, early evening and mid-morning each day between Thursday and Monday.

Forecasts suggest D.C., Los Angeles, Houston and Tampa will see the largest jumps in metro crowding compared with their respective norms. The worst is projected for one route from Gainesville to Tampa, where INRIX said metro congestion on Sunday at 9 a.m. local time could be 88% higher than usual.

How elections affect travel – and can politicians get refunds for cancelled July holidays?

The election is likely to cause thousands of cancellations by people involved in the campaign and on polling day, article bookmarked.

The first July election in a lifetime will have some significant effects on travellers – specifically those people who are now required to be in the UK for the campaign and/or the polling day itself.

A number of candidates, party activists, election workers and those working in the media will have booked early July holidays in the expectation of an autumn vote. This is especially true for people in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where many schools break up at the end of June.

But what about the response of the UK public? Will we see a sudden increase in demand for holidays because some will want to escape the campaign – or could people decide to stay at home because they want to lap up the spectacle? And, crucially, if you are planning to be away on 4 July, how can you vote?

These are the key questions and answers.

I’m on holiday on 4 July. How can I vote?

There are two options.

Apply for a proxy vote , whereby someone else completes your voting form on your behalf.

Arrange for a postal vote , which allows you to make your choice up to two weeks ahead of polling day.

Arrangements are different for Northern Ireland, with full details here .

I have a holiday booked for early July. My job means I now can’t go. What are my options?

Thousands of local authority staff, candidates, party workers and journalists who were assuming a quiet early summer ahead of a busy autumn will be urgently cancelling travel arrangements.

Your best hope is that the travel company is prepared to be flexible in these unusual circumstances and allow you to postpone. That is more likely to happen if, for example, you have booked a family-run seaside hotel where you stay regularly.

Unfortunately, most companies are likely to say that normal terms and conditions apply – which could mean you lose some or all of your money.

Package holidaymakers are in the best position: they can transfer the trip to someone else, such as a family member or friend, on payment of a modest amount – typically £50.

People from Scotland or Northern Ireland who have “DIY” family holidays planned, with flights and accommodation booked separately, may find themselves thousands of pounds out of pocket.

I imagine a range of employers, from media organisations to local authorities, may be asked to pick up the bills for spoiled holidays.

Can I claim on travel insurance?

Most unlikely; I know of no travel policy that would pay out because of a snap election.

If loads of people are cancelling, does that mean bargains to be picked up?

No. It may be that a few enticing Mediterranean villas are now unexpectedly available between now and early July. But it seems improbable that more than 15,000 election-related workers might have to cancel holidays. That is just 1 per cent of the number of British people who typically head abroad at this time of year, and not enough to move the market.

Will there be a surge in demand for holidays between now and 4 July?

Some people may feel they have had enough of the election already. The notion that significantly numbers are so cheesed off they want to escape the campaign is a popular one.

Were it true, a surge in demand could lead to higher holiday prices.

Yet I can find neither market nor anecdotal evidence to support it. Going on holiday would constitute an extreme step to avoid all the campaigning: people could simply turn off broadcast news programmes and find news on other subjects online.

Will some people cancel holidays because they want to follow the hustings?

I have never heard of that happening. It is conceivable that some people who were thinking of travelling abroad – and sensibly booking fairly late from England and Wales – may decide not to go so they can enjoy what promises to be a slapstick campaign.

But again, the numbers are probably not significant.

Looking ahead to polling day: will there be any travel effect on or around 4 July?

Possibly. In my experience, few outside events (apart from the weather) are substantial enough to alter the usual patterns of demand among British travellers. I count four, of which three are sport-related – and two of those involve football.

  • Summer Olympics
  • General Elections (but not all of them).

Not all elections are equal. In 1997, when it appeared that the Conservatives’ long run in power would end, anecdotal evidence suggested many people wanted to be “in the room” as the count unfolded. I found a £99 one-week package holiday to Ibiza at the time.

Yet eight years later, the May 2005 vote – the third won by Tony Blair – appears to have been regarded as a foregone conclusion, with relatively little interest on election night beyond the Labour majority. I flew out to Nice on the day itself, 4 May 2005, and paid a normal fare for the privilege.

I sense that 2024 will be very similar to 1997. Airlines and holiday companies are currently experiencing “soft” demand for off-peak holidays. They may find it falls still further over the first week in July.

Look out for some good last-minute deals from airports in England and Wales; schools in Scotland and Northern Ireland will have just broken up, with demand from families in those nations sweeping up available holidays.

Travel | Memorial Day travel checklist: Preparing your car, picking your California destination

What to expect on the roads and at the gas pump as summer season kicks off.

Kristin J. Bender is a Bay Area News Group reporter

If you are one of the millions of Californians loading up the car and hitting the highway on Memorial Day weekend, be prepared for lots of company.

AAA says more people will travel for the holiday weekend than in nearly two decades. They’ll flock to sunny vineyards in the Napa Valley, rollicking theme parks in Southern California and busy entertainment venues in Las Vegas and New York, according to the auto association.

“Ever since COVID restrictions were lifted, we’ve seen record after record travel numbers,’’ said AAA spokesperson John Treanor. “There’s been a real hunger for many Americans to get out and take the trips they weren’t able to take before. This year, in particular, we are seeing amusement parks at the top of the destination list.”

AAA says 2024 will finish narrowly behind 2005 as the busiest Memorial Day travel weekend since the company began keeping track in 2000. An estimated 5.6 million Californians will head out for the holiday, with about 80% of those folks taking a trip by car.

In the South Bay, California’s Great America is offering entrance to its South Bay Shores waterpark in addition to the rides and rollercoasters, and there will be fireworks on Sunday night as the holiday weekend comes to a close. Disneyland too has some special promotions and packages for the holiday weekend.

Dave Kallal, who lives on the Central California coast, will be one of those hitting the road for the long holiday weekend, making a trip in his Glampervan. The Oakland-based company sells vans equipped with a queen size bed, kitchen, roof deck and plenty of room for storage.

Customer David Rowland, left, of Walnut Creek, checks his soon-to-own Glampervan as Andrew Stenken, owner of Glampervan Global LLC, talks with him at his lot in Oakland, Calif., on Friday, May 17, 2023. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

“We basically travel every weekend and surf and camp, and we’ll be going to Hobson Beach Park in Ventura for Memorial Day,” he said.

He said he’s not worried about traffic because he’s riding in style.

“The drive down there is easy and beautiful,’’ Kallal said. At the beach “you basically open up the back doors of the van, and you can lay in bed and look at the ocean drinking your coffee in the morning.”

Chart of average gas prices since 2023

“With gas prices now nearing a 10-cent drop to the high we saw a few weeks ago, the future looks good as we get closer to Memorial Day,” De Haan said in a statement on GasBuddy, which uses crowdsourcing to track gas prices.

In California, where gas prices are the highest in the nation, regular gas was sitting at $5.22 a gallon Friday. Last year at this time, drivers paid an average of $4.79 a gallon for regular gasoline.

AAA says Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Napa will be the busiest Bay Area route as people head out of town Friday morning, but there are plenty of other places to visit in California in any direction.

Visit California says a drive down historic Highway 1 is a top pick for travelers yearning to see dramatic cliffs, towering redwoods and breathtaking water views. Part of the highway near the Rocky Creek Bridge that was closed since late March reopened Friday.

Those looking for a high-energy weekend can check out Palm Springs for desert hiking, Los Angeles for urban nightlife and Santa Barbara County and Santa Ynez for some Pinot Noir tasting and lounging at sun-glazed Gaviota State Park.

But before you hit the road, Chris Pyle, a long-time car mechanic and current automotive specialist with San Francisco-based Just Answer, has some advice.

“All too often a car owner forgets to look at everything about the car. People get in a habit of only looking at things in the driver’s seat,” Pyle said. “For someone who is going out of town, they need to look outside the box and check every single thing on a car checklist.”

That means checking the lights, seatbelts, tire pressure, fluids and brakes and making certain the car’s spare tire is inflated and in good working order, Pyle said. And once they hit the road, Pyle also suggests slowing down for better gas mileage. Sixty-two miles per hour is the sweet spot, he said.

Those opting to fly out of town for the holiday weekend should also take extra precautions and arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance for domestic flights and three hours early for international trips.

While one Southwest airplane arrives, another one gets ready to depart from the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport on Thursday, April 11, 2024. The San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is expected to be busy throughout the Memorial Day holiday travel weekend. More than 130,000 passengers are expected at the airport during the long weekend. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

AAA expects this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at the nation’s airports since 2005 with 3.51 million air travelers, an increase of nearly 5% over last year.

The newly renamed San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport expects more than 130,000 passengers during the long weekend. That’s roughly the same number as last year but still more than 30,000 fewer passengers than pre-pandemic. And San Francisco International Airport says it expects 147,000 passengers to come through the airport between Friday and Monday. That’s about 33,000 fewer passengers than before the pandemic.

San José Mineta International Airport didn’t provide forecasts for the number of passengers expected to pass through the airport during the long holiday weekend but said airlines will have roughly 188,000 seats available during the time period.

Residents of the Golden State won’t be alone on the roads and in the sky.

AAA says more than 43.8 million Americans are projected to travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That’s 4% higher than last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We’re expecting Memorial Day weekend numbers like we haven’t seen in almost 20 years,” said Brian Ng, senior vice president of Membership and Travel Marketing for AAA Northern California, in a statement. “It’s not just a return to pre-pandemic levels but also foreshadows the robust summer travel season ahead.”

Widespread flight delays across the U.S. tested the patience of travelers who tried to get a jump start on Memorial Day weekend, but the relatively few canceled flights raised hopes that airlines would be able to handle the bigger crowds expected Friday.

The Transportation Security Administration predicted that Friday will be the busiest day for air travel over the long holiday weekend, with nearly 3 million people expected to pass through airport checkpoints . The number of passengers could rival the record of 2.9 million, set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.

“Airports are going to be more packed than we have seen in 20 years,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said.

Highways also are likely to be jammed the next few days as motorists head out of town and then return home. AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — with 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer travel season is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

“Memorial Day is a holiday weekend. I get to hang with family and friends, so I’d say that’s priceless, right?” Nene Efebo said during a two-hour wait for a delayed flight at Denver International Airport. “Anything to hang out with family and friends.”

Some travelers reported experiencing sticker shock when they booked their trips. Upon arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, Ciarra Marsh said the city “was not our original destination, but we chose here because it was cheaper.”

At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Larisa Latimer of New Lenox, Illinois, said her airfare was reasonable but other expenses for a getaway to New Orleans were not.

“I just have to make the accommodation,” she said. “The rental car is up ... this year, the hotel accommodations were very unusually expensive.”

Kathy Larko of Fort Meyers, Florida, used frequent-flyer miles — and some flexible scheduling — to pay for her trip to Chicago.

“I’m really conscious of looking at the cost of the entire trip. We’re staying a little farther out than we normally would” to get a lower hotel rate, she said. “We’re also flying back a day later, because we could get cheaper miles.”

Airport unions are using the holiday weekend to highlight their demands.

About 100 workers who clean airplane cabins and drive trash trucks at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, started a 24-hour strike Thursday, demanding better pay and healthcare, according to the Service Employees International Union. About 15% of flights were delayed, but it was unclear whether the strike played any role.

A planned strike at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York was averted, however. Teamsters Local 553, which represents about 300 workers who refuel passenger and cargo jets at JFK, said that it reached a settlement with Allied Aviation Services and called off a walkout planned for Friday.

“We are happy an agreement has been reached, a need for a strike averted, and we are hopeful that the deal will be ratified by our members,” said Demos Demopoulos, the secretary-treasurer of the local.

More than 6,000 flights were delayed Thursday by early evening on the East Coast, with the biggest backups at the three major airports in the New York City area and Dallas-Fort Worth International.

The weekend’s highway traffic and crowded airports could be a sample of what is to come. U.S. airlines expect to carry a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set – you guessed it – last summer .
