Luxe suites and expansive views: What to know about Silversea's new cruise ship

silversea cruises latest news

If you’re looking to treat yourself on your next vacation, a new luxury cruise ship set sail this week.

Silversea Cruises’ newest vessel, Silver Nova, embarked passengers for its maiden voyage on Monday. The week-long trip on the first ship in the line’s Nova class will take guests to ports in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, round-trip from Venice, Italy.

“ It was incredibly emotional to welcome guests aboard Silver Nova ahead of her maiden voyage,” Barbara Muckermann, the line’s president, said in a news release . “Benefiting from an innovative asymmetrical design, she immerses guests into the destination at every turn – a strong expression of our brand mission.”

Here’s what guests should know about the ship.

Where will Silver Nova sail?

The ship, which can accommodate 728 guests, will spend the rest of the summer sailing in the Mediterranean, before making its way to the Caribbean and South America in November.

Silver Nova will depart on a 71-day Grand Voyage with destinations primarily in South America early next year. The cruise, which begins on Jan. 4, 2024, will visit 18 countries. Prices including airfare start at $50,900 per person based on double occupancy.

What can passengers expect from Silver Nova?

The ship’s design “prizes openness over symmetry,” the line said in the release. Silver Nova’s pool deck overlooks the water. The Marquee and The Dusk Bar, which are new outdoor food and drink venues, offer expansive views towards the ship's aft and from its stern, respectively.

The ship also features 13 suite categories - the most ever for the line - ranging from over 350 to more than 1,320 square feet, and all have butler service. For passengers wanting some extra space, the ship’s largest accommodation, the Otium Suite, boasts floor-to-ceiling windows with 270-degree views and a 431-square-foot balcony with a whirlpool.

The ship will also feature a spa, a two-level boutique and more.

How much does a cruise on Silver Nova cost?

Prices vary by sailing and room category but a nine-day sailing from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico departing Nov. 18 currently starts at $4,450 per person based on double occupancy, according to Silversea’s website . The price includes a wide range of eateries on board; drinks such as champagne and premium spirits; Wi-Fi; and more.

This New Cruise Ship Has an Unprecedented Design, Elegant Suites, and 'Quirky' Cocktails

Here's a closer look at the Silver Nova, one of the newest ships from the luxury line Silversea.

On my first trip with Silversea, more than a decade ago, I cooed over risotto flecked with gold leaf. I swooned when my husband and I were serenaded by a jazz duo in an intimate supper club. I loved that the bartenders would remember our favorite drinks — each one presented on linen napkin — and I learned what it was like to have a butler who polished my shoes, seeing that they were sorely in need of a shine.

I also noted things Silversea didn’t have. Those bartenders didn’t hand me a bill to sign, no hands were out for a tip. There were no pushy announcements hawking tours, shopping lectures, or onboard art auctions, nor photographers plaintively begging for a pose so they could sell me a snapshot later. There were, in short, none of the annoyances you sometimes find on ships.

So when I boarded Silver Nova in 2023, I had a feeling the ship would be defined as much by what it didn’t have as by what it did. And, true to that Silversea DNA, I found that this vessel seemed to almost disappear. Instead, the seagoing experience blossomed, as my fellow passengers and I sighted islands and enjoyed the weave of coastlines. Many of today’s most talked-about cruise ships work to focus our attention inwards; Silver Nova , by contrast, reminds us to look out — and to appreciate where we’re going.

This bit of alchemy is all thanks to the remarkable, asymmetrical design of Silver Nova . This aesthetically pleasing choice also allowed designers to eliminate most structures on the upper decks, allowing the sea and landscapes to tell their story. To take just one example, the pool doesn’t sit on the ship’s centerline, as is common. Instead, it unspools along the starboard side, yielding an openness that is unprecedented on a small cruise ship.

“On the open decks of other ships you see a lot of stuff — attractions, distractions, a lot of things that keep your eyes busy,” explained Andrea Tonet, Silversea’s vice president of product strategy. “We did the opposite, we removed everything that was not necessary, every obstacle, to create this unobstructed view of the sea and the destination.”  As a result, I always felt like I had a clear sense of being somewhere while aboard. I gained a deeper sense of connection to my environment.

That said, Silver Nova is on the larger side, at least among true luxury ships, with space for 728 passengers. But it also has a capacious passenger-to-space ratio that lends the vessel a welcome openness.

A ship of glass and curves, a desire to bring the destinations to the guest, and a chart marked for some of the world’s most appealing places — here is my review of Silversea’s Silver Nova .

  • Though larger overall than is typical for a luxury ship, Silver Nova is spacious and uncrowded, offering more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel.
  • Silversea’s groundbreaking S.A.L.T. program has been elevated for Nova , providing localized culinary immersion both at sea and on land.
  • With its ample outdoor deck space, the ship is well-suited for warm-weather voyages and scenic areas, such as Alaska’s Inside Passage and New Zealand’s Milford Sound.
  • In a first for Silversea, Nova has aft-facing suites, including eight with wraparound balconies offering remarkable panoramic views.

The all-suite Nova has nine different stateroom layouts, starting with standard veranda categories, which make up more than 75 percent of the ship’s accommodations. These measure 301 square feet inside and feature a subdued palette of grey and cappuccino tones. The 54-square-foot teak veranda is big enough for two to enjoy a meal, and marble bathrooms are equipped with a roomy shower stall (many have both a full tub and separate shower). All suites include a walk-in closet, vanity table, a large TV, and stocked minibar. A butler is available at all hours, and in-room dining is provided by most of the ship’s venues.

Throughout, Silversea’s custom mattresses are sumptuous and sleep-inducing, with combed Egyptian cotton bedding by Milan’s Rivolta Carmignani. There’s a pillow menu, with feather/down blends, memory foam, and two hypoallergenic options, medium and firm.

A variety of larger suites are available, but the star is a pair of Otium Suites, each spanning 1,324 square feet and each featuring a huge wraparound balcony with private hot tub. Thanks to the ship’s asymmetrical design, these balconies protrude in a way that allows for 270-degree views.

Silversea’s culinary program is a point of pride for the brand. Atlantide is Nova ’s de facto main dining room, a handsome venue that offers a selection of steaks, lobster, and caviar in a plush, comfortable setting. Next door, the ambitious menu at S.A.L.T. Kitchen evolves by day, taking inspiration from the destination in which the ship is sailing.  For example, on trips to Croatia, guests might find Dalmatian sardines marinated in lemon; along Central America you might encounter hearty escabeche.

La Terrazza’s menu features Italian specialties, with pasta made onboard, while Silver Note is a swank supper club, where gourmet tapas are served against a backdrop of live jazz. Located up top, the Marquee is capped by an airy, two-story pergola that dapples the venue with shade; views from every table are almost unimpeded.  Full breakfasts are served at the Marquee, and at lunch you’ll find an al fresco rotisserie with salads, burgers, and Neapolitan-style pizzas; at night grill your own chops.

Although Silversea is a mostly inclusive cruise line, three of the restaurants require a surcharge: La Dame does a selection of French classics ($160 including wine pairings), and Kaiseki has a full-on Asian menu ($80). S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table has seating for up to 24 diners, with 11-course tasting menus embellished with anecdotes about the history of each dish or signature ingredient ($180 including wine and cocktail pairings).

The ship has several bars, including Panorama Lounge, a retreat found aboard all Silversea vessels. On Nova, the bar’s outdoor terrace includes a small fireplace, a feature I don’t recall seeing on any other cruise ship.  Also of note is the Dusk Bar, which sits aft on Deck 10 and is stocked with interesting spirits. (I found it to be a great spot for sunset selfies.) The S.A.L.T. Bar was probably my favorite spot, with graceful outdoor seating and a menu of unusual cocktails featuring quirky ingredients cued to the ship’s regional itinerary.

Through early 2026, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding.  In the spring and fall, as the ship transits between the two hemispheres, watch for voyages along the coasts of Asia, including some circumnavigations of Japan.

On Nova , a selection of both included and added-cost shore excursions are offered. In places like Alaska, the included tours cover a variety of activities, from coach rides to scenic areas, whale watching, e-bike trips, hiking, and kayaking. In Australia and New Zealand, options include kayaking in the Whitsunday Islands, a vintage steam train ride near Melbourne, and a Maori cultural experience.

In Alaska, helicopter trips to a glacier where a dog-sled camp is based, or a private fishing and crabbing tour are among the added-cost tours. In Australia and New Zealand, add-on tours include a private car and guide in most ports, Hunter Valley wineries by helicopter, and a tour of the Lord of the Rings filming locations and Weta Studios. Other tours are built around the S.A.L.T. program and focused on regional culinary angles, available at extra cost.

Silver Nova ’s asymmetrical design allows for a chic, expansive pool deck — a grand total of more than 42,000 square feet across two decks. With that kind of elbow room, there's hardly a need to wake up early to claim a deck chair. The swimming pool sits close to the starboard side, and the seating and elevated walkways around it create an amphitheater-like effect, with a backdrop that can go on for miles. To me, it felt like being at a supercool rooftop bar or cliff's-edge resort — with a panorama that's ever changing.

Silversea’s S.A.L.T. ecosystem, which is on several of the line's ships, deserves special mention as an amenity, too. The acronym stands for Sea and Land Taste, and describes numerous food-focused experiences on and off the ship. Some of the core moments are available at the previously mentioned S.A.L.T. Bar, Kitchen, and Chef's Table; there's also a gorgeous S.A.L.T. Lab, a space that allows for hands-on culinary lessons. The culinary programming extends to talks and demos held in the ship's Venetian Lounge, as well as on shore excursions branded as part of S.A.L.T. Bottom line, if deep-diving into the cuisine of a specific destination is your goal, look for the S.A.L.T. "stamp."

Elsewhere, the Otium Spa has among its features a steam room and indoor thermal pool with floor-to-ceiling sea views. There’s a fitness center, and personal trainers are available for individual or group sessions.  The spacious Venetian Lounge spans two decks — a rarity on a smaller ship — with cabaret seating and tiered banquettes for music performances, movie screenings, and other group programs. A few more intimate spaces include the Connoisseur’s Corner, a cigar lounge and bar, and the small yet delightful library, tucked behind the Observation Lounge.

Without dedicated kids areas, Silver Nova was not designed for children. But families who don’t need high-powered diversions to keep children engaged will find a welcoming environment at sea and, during holiday periods, possibly other children to socialize with. Silversea allows children over the age of six months, as long as they’re accompanied by an adult over the age of 21; babysitting services are not available.

Public areas of Silver Nova , including all restaurants, bars, and the spa, are wheelchair accessible. Embarkation and disembarkation are also typically accessible, with a gangway that's flat enough to accommodate mobility devices; in ports where stairs are involved, crew members can provide assistance. The vessel also keeps some wheelchairs for guest use.

Nova has braille/tactile public room signage, elevator buttons, staircase handrails, and stateroom numbers.

The ship has six ADA accessible suites, on various decks, in the Premium Veranda and Silver Suite categories. Each is equipped with wider entrance doors and appropriate paths of travel for wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility equipment, and each includes an accessible bathroom and shower. All areas within these suites are reachable without the need for additional ramps, and features an accessible bathroom with vanity and separate shower.

Royal Caribbean Group's Silversea Cruises has acquired one of the most expensive luxury expedition cruise ships ever built for $275 million

  • Royal Caribbean Group's Silversea Cruises acquired its new luxury expedition ship for $275 million.
  • The cruise vessel initially belonged to Crystal Cruises before the brand dramatically collapsed this year.
  • Wealthy travelers have been demanding more luxury expedition cruises, according to Silversea.

Insider Today

Royal Caribbean Group's Silversea Cruises has acquired its newest luxury expedition cruise ship, the Endeavour, for $275 million as the brand continues to expand its expedition arm.

The cruise ship was delivered to Crystal Cruises in 2021 before the brand dramatically halted operations in February. Under its new management and name, the 200-passenge r Silver Endeavour will return to sea with itineraries to Antarctica, servicing the growing number of "high-end, affluent customers" interested in expedition cruises, according to a press release .

Related stories

Silversea's $275 million acquisition came at a steep discount: The cruise ship reportedly cost $385 million to build, making the vessel one of the most expensive cruise ships ever constructed, Gene Sloan reported for The Points Guy .

"With Endeavour, we are seeking to grow our ... fleet to meet the exceptional demand for ultra-luxury expedition cruising while also enhancing our profitability profile," Jason Liberty, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said in a press release .

Like any luxury expedition ship, the polar class ship can accommodate zodiac boats, kayaks, high-quality camera systems, and observation areas. But it wouldn't be a true cruise ship without recreational and leisure offerings. Besides expedition gear, the eight-deck vessel also has typical cruise amenities like a spa, several restaurants and bars, a swimming pool, and an almost equal ratio of guests to crew.

This new acquisition marks Silversea's fifth expedition ship in its now 11-ship fleet. And this addition comes at a fortuitous time: Silversea has been seeing strong demand for its expedition cruises, according to the company . In response, in late June, the Royal Caribbean Group's cruise brand added three additional Antarctica itineraries to its 2023 to 2024 cruise season.

Silversea's Silver Moon alters route amid Red Sea security concerns

CruiseMapper logo

Due to security concerns raised by Yemen's Houthi rebels, Silversea 's vessel Silver Moon adjusted its cruise schedule from January 6 to 16, 2024.

Originally planned to sail from Aqaba-Petra Jordan to Muscat Oman , the current itinerary was altered due to safety concerns arising from Houthi rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The voyage will now conclude at the port of Piraeus-Athens Greece , instead of Muscat.

Guests were notified of these changes on January 9, 2024, with the adjusted journey including stops at Egyptian alternative ports, Sharm el-Sheikh and Sokhna , before transiting the Suez Canal to disembark in Piraeus.

In response to the evolving situation, Silversea further modified the Silver Moon's schedule. Due to the unsafe conditions at the Bab al-Mandab Strait, subsequent voyages departing from Muscat on January 16, 2024, and from Dubai on January 26 have been canceled. The ship, devoid of passengers for crew safety, will navigate around Africa into the Indian Ocean. Regular cruises are expected to resume on February 11, 2024, starting from Mumbai India , with Silver Moon voyages continuing in Asia until the end of May 2024.

The escalating security risk at the exit from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean has prompted Silversea Cruises to implement a comprehensive route change, altering the disembarkation port and canceling two upcoming trips for the Silver Moon.

Currently, cruise ships with guests are prohibited from passing through the perilous Bab al-Mandab Strait. While alternatives such as trips without passengers or circumnavigating Africa are possible, they require extensive schedule adjustments and travel cancellations.

Your Royal Caribbean loyalty status is about to get a lot more valuable

Gene Sloan

Royal Caribbean loyalists will soon be able to status match their way to perks with luxury line Silversea Cruises — and vice versa.

The same will be true for Celebrity Cruises loyalists.

Royal Caribbean Group, which owns all three brands, will announce Thursday that customers with loyalty program status at any one of the three lines will get equivalent status at the other two.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

For example, Diamond-level members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program will now be able to get instant recognition in Silversea's Venetian Society loyalty program at the 250 Venetian Society Days milestone award level — even if they've never sailed with Silversea.

Similarly, Elite-level members of Celebrity's Captain's Club loyalty program will now be able to get recognition in the Silversea program at the 250 Venetian Society Days milestone award level without ever having sailed with the brand.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity elite members at higher status levels will match into even higher tiers of the Silversea program.

"When that customer is making that decision on their next [cruise] experience, you want them to feel loyal to stay within your family of brands," Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean Group CEO, said in an exclusive interview with TPG to discuss the new program.

Speaking by video from his Miami office, Liberty noted that the company's cruising customers sometimes shifted between cruise brands as their circumstances changed — when they entered a new stage of life with or without kids or grandkids, for instance. They also sometimes shifted between brands to experience a new destination that wasn't on their favored line's schedule, he said.

He suggested that in such cases, Royal Caribbean Group doesn't want them to choose cruise brands owned by other companies.

"We don't want a Royal Caribbean customer to find their way onto a competitor's ship. We would rather them find their way onto one of our ships," he said. "And loyalty, as you know, is one of the strongest ways to make sure that happens."

Instant status at 3 brands

The new program will make Royal Caribbean Group the only major cruise company to offer loyalty program status matching across all its wholly owned brands.

Until now, Royal Caribbean Group has offered status matching between the loyalty programs of its Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises brands but not its Silversea brand.

The company also used to offer a status match with the loyalty program for Azamara Cruises , which it once owned.

The new program may have the greatest impact on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity regulars who want to give Silversea a try.

Diamond members in Royal Caribbean's program and Elite members in Celebrity's program who status match to the 250 Venetian Society Days level in the Silversea program will be immediately eligible for a 10% discount on Silversea cruises — a significant savings. They'll also get other perks with the brand that first-time Silversea cruisers wouldn't normally get.

Membership in Silversea's Venetian Society at the 250 Venetian Society Days level normally requires completing 250 days of sailing with the line — a high hurdle.

The new status match program also will mean that high-tier Silversea passengers who want to, say, try a suite product on a Royal Caribbean ship — maybe because they'll have kids or grandkids in tow — will be instantly eligible for all the high-status perks in the Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor program.

Under the new status matching system, customers with loyalty in any of the three programs will be able to match to an equivalent status level in the other programs at five different tiers. The exact breakdown of status match levels will follow the chart below:

silversea cruises latest news

Among the fine print of the new Royal Caribbean Group status match program:

  • It will begin with sailings departing June 5 or later.
  • Customers must enroll in a program before receiving a status match.
  • Customers already enrolled in multiple loyalty programs will be automatically matched across the brands within seven days.

No single loyalty program for now

The new status match program for all three wholly owned Royal Caribbean brands stops short of what some loyalty experts see as a logical next step for the company's loyalty program efforts: a single combined loyalty program for all three brands.

When TPG asked about this, Liberty suggested the company wanted to be sure it understood what loyal customers at its three brands wanted before making a more radical change. But he hinted more change might be coming.

"This is kind of step one. We want to tie these [programs] together," he said, calling the new status match program "basically kind of the beginning of a common loyalty platform."

Saying there was "more to come," Liberty added, "You'll see here over time that you're building status and other things across the family of brands."

When asked specifically about whether Royal Caribbean Group might shift to a single loyalty program similar to what Marriott offers with its massive Bonvoy program, which allows for earning and burning points across more than 30 hotel brands, Liberty suggested that might not be the right model.

"In some ways Marriott put Bonvoy in front of the brands," Liberty said, suggesting that stays at Marriott hotels had become all about earning points in the Bonvoy program and not the allures of the individual hotel brands and hotels. That's something Liberty suggested Royal Caribbean Group doesn't want to do.

He said the company wanted the individual brands in its portfolio to always be the focus for its customers and the "guest facing" part of the business, not the company's loyalty program.

"We don't have what I just typically describe as the earn-and-burn customer," Liberty noted. "Our customers actually appreciate more the recognition [from loyalty status]. Like, they want to go to the cocktail party for their tier. They want to have free dry cleaning. Those things are more important to them [than earning and burning] points."

Liberty noted that people don't cruise as often as they stay in hotels, so an "earn-and-burn" model for a cruise loyalty program that resembled the Marriott Bonvoy program didn't make as much sense.

"We get you one, two, three times a year. We don't get you one or two, three times a month, which you have [with] the earn-and-burn type players ... mainly hotels and airlines."

One thing Liberty did note is that there is more overlap between Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Silversea customers than many people might think.

"From what we can see in our data, there's actually quite a bit of overlap between our suite guests [on Royal Caribbean] and our Silversea guests," he said.

He gave the example of well-heeled customers who booked top suites on Royal Caribbean's family-friendly ships, sometimes at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars a week, when traveling with their kids and grandkids. Those same customers might then switch to Silversea's high-end vessels when they wanted a more intimate or off-the-beaten-path escape to a place like Antarctica.

Liberty reiterated a catchphrase he's been using in recent conference calls with Wall Street analysts: Royal Caribbean Group wants to move its customers from experiencing "a vacation of a lifetime" with one of its brands to "a lifetime of vacations" at the company's three brands. The new status match program is a first step in that direction.

"I think we've been very intentional about having the right brand in the right segments," he said. "Now it's time to make sure that we're orbiting ourselves around the customer and meet them on the experience that they want to do and recognize them accordingly."

The Royal Caribbean Group has announced a new status-matching opportunity between its 3 cruise lines. This is a great way for existing elite status members to get extra benefits thanks to the equivalent tier status they’ll receive.

Let’s take a look at how this new status match program works for loyalty members.

The Royal Caribbean group owns 3 cruise lines: Royal Caribbean , Celebrity, and Silversea.

And while it has previously allowed those with elite status to match between Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, the same wasn’t true for Silversea . That has changed as the Royal Caribbean group has announced that all three cruise lines will begin matching interchangeably for sailings departing on (or after) Wednesday, June 5.

These matches take place automatically, so you’ll need to be enrolled in each program for it to take effect.

Silversea is the luxury arm of the Royal Caribbean Group, while Royal Caribbean tends to focus on budget-minded travelers and Celebrity caters to the crowd between the 2.

This is great news for sailors on any of these lines, but most especially for those with Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Society Diamond status , which is earned after just 80 nights with Royal Caribbean , while Elite with Celebrity’s Captain’s Club can take as many as 150 nights.

RCL graph

This new status match opportunity means that Royal Caribbean sailors with Diamond status will be able to receive Silversea’s coveted 250 VS Days status without needing to pay for Silversea’s much more expensive cruises. The benefits of 250 VS Days status in the Venetian Society are many:

  • VS events on reunion voyage
  • 5% off Venetian Society sailings
  • 10% off all future sailings
  • Pre-sale access to new itineraries
  • Complimentary party onboard
  • Complimentary laundry and pressing
  • Upgraded bottle of champagne in suite

Not all of these are significant, though anyone who’s cruised before will likely argue that laundry service is a must. That said, getting 10% off all sailings can save you a lot of money, especially since Silversea cruises tend to run on the more expensive side.

Silversea members can also match right back to Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, which entitles them to benefits such as complimentary drink packages, free Wi-Fi, and concierge lounge access .

This new status match program is great news for elites with status on any of the lines, especially for Royal Caribbean. If you have upcoming sailings with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, or Silversea, check to see when your elite status is matched.
