- The new Tata Safari facelift has received major updates inside-out
- The SUV is a lot more feature-packed now and get advanced tech
- The Safari Facelift will be launched in India on October 17, 2023
Twenty-five years is a long time – and if you are an early millennial like me, back in 1998 you were just about in your teenage, and in awe of this sensation called the Tata Safari . Now I am closer to my mid-life crisis and a large, in-your-face SUV is just what the doctor has prescribed, but in the last 25 years, the Safari too has evolved. This child prodigy that we all fell in love with has also come of age. So, I spent a day with the new Safari to figure out how this facelifted version fits the needs of someone looking to buy an SUV, today.

The Safari has moved on from the angry look; that is just the Harrier now. Tata with this facelift has created more distinction between the two SUVs. While the Harrier continues to get horizontal and angular lines, the Safari has more vertical elements. What this has ensured is that instead of looking like a fighter about to enter the ring, the Safari now carries itself with the charm of an army officer!

In terms of design updates, this now gets a full-width LED bar with welcome and goodbye animation. While I am not a big fan of this new trend, to be honest, it does look nice on the Safari. The profile is more or less the same, but the new 19-inch alloys are very cool looking and fill up the wheel wells nicely.
As for the rear, the LED taillights also get a connected pattern, in line with the Safari’s design theme with vertical lines. Having said that, the rear isn’t the most appealing angle to look at the safari; the design makes it look a little smaller than it is.

I like the way the new Safari looks – sophisticated! One of the key reasons for that is also the choice of colours – the Cosmic Gold that I drove is quite unique, I am also keen on looking at the Supernova Copper and Lunar Slate.
At first glance, the inside looks very different from the earlier model. Though the layout is very much the same, to ensure that the SUV feels more premium Tata has played with the styling. The dashboard gets faux wood inlays with a pinstripe pattern, which helps in creating this upmarket image. And I think it looks particularly nice.
Although a bit gimmicky, the new steering, with the illuminated Tata logo, does get its fair share of attention and the infotainment system is a 12.3-inch unit on this top-end Accomplished persona. The instrument cluster is also big, 10.25-inch to be precise, with many customisation options. The Safari also gets a piano black panel for capacitive buttons for AC and other in-car controls, along with a rotary dial with a built-in screen for the terrain modes.
New features on the Safari include a powered tailgate (finally!), a 10-speaker JBL system, 7 airbags, wireless charger dual-zone AC, and rear sunshades. The system also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with JBL modes that allow you to select between different predefined music settings.
The space in the car remains unchanged. If you intend to use the Safari as a chauffeur-driven car, then the boss mode at the back is handy. Also, the cooled seats at the back are a very valuable feature that not many in the market offer at this point. The third row is for children and has its own storage pockets, air vents and charging points with USB and type-C ports.
Performance
There is no change to the powertrain of the Safari. It runs on the same 2.0-litre diesel motor that makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The key updates here are the paddle shifters and the switch to electric power steering, which make driving this relatively large SUV easier.
In city mode, it lacks bottom-end, this though can be quickly addressed by the use of paddle shifters or Sport mode. There are a few tweaks to the suspension as well and the ride is marginally better than before, not that it was ever too bad!
While overall I like the way Safari drives, I am not a big fan of the ADAS for everyday usage. It feels intrusive and the cabin is always ringing with one alert or another, since driving sense in our chaotic cities is abysmal.
On the highway, though it is a different story, with the adaptive cruise control, expressway driving becomes a lot easier.
With the ground clearance and the torque, some amount of soft-roading too is easy for the Safari. For those still looking for AWD, I think the wait will continue at least till 2025.
Safety and Variant Details
Six airbags are standard across all five personas of the Safari. The base is the Smart Persona which comes with 17-inch alloys and 6 airbags. The Pure Persona gets a touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers, Android Auto, Apple Carplay and a reverse parking camera.

The Adventure Persona above it, gets 18-inch wheels, 360-degree view cameras for parking and optional ADAS which is not updated to offer adaptive cruise control. The top-end Fearless and Dark persona gets 19-inch alloys, a bigger display and a music system along with 7 airbags.
For the ones looking at the Safari as an answer to their midlife crisis, they will have to look somewhere else. Without the AWD, the Safari is not a toy. This is a serious car for a mature buyer. For someone looking for a 6- and 7-seater family car with solid features, modern tech like ADAS, decent space and acceptable safety, the Tata Safari makes a very compelling case. Prices for the SUV will be announced on October 17, 2023, and I think a premium of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, depending on the variant, would be a reasonable ask.

Last year, Indian automaker Tata Motors bagged the contract from the Ministry of Defence to supply over 3000 units of its Tata Safari Strome SUV to the Indian armed forces. Pictures on Team-BHP now suggest that Tata Motors has begun the delivery of the army spec Tata Safari and was recently spotted at the company’s stock yard in Delhi and will be joining the Indian army fleet soon. The Indian Army has given the Tata Safari a new lease on life , it will replace the tried and tested Maruti Suzuki Gypsy as the Army’s new 4X4 vehicle. Indian Army’s new Tata Safari will get a new specially protected under-body and a reworked suspension. Tata Safari is indeed a good replacement for the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gyspy that has served in the Indian army for almost three decades.

Tata Safari army spec SUV gets black and beige interiors, reading lamps in the front and middle rows along with a manually operated Subros air conditioning unit. It will also feature dual airbags and ABS. Exterior changes include matte green paint job exclusive for the Indian Army, provision to attach jerry cans on the rear left and black-out lamps. The chrome has been replaced by either painting it with the exterior colour or with regular black shade. Engine duty on the army spec Tata Safari Storme is taken care by the 2.2L Varicor engine that sheds a power of 154 bhp and 400 Nm of torque mated with a 6-Speed gearbox.
Reports also suggest Defence executives had placed the order to procure Tata Safari after testing it for about 15 months. The basic criteria included 800 kg payload, A/C and hard roof along with 4×4 as a standard offering. The Safari was selected after undergoing a 15-month trial period. It comes under a new category of General Service 800 (GS800), which had three major requirements including an 800 kg payload, hard roof and air conditioning. Many of these vehicles being procured by Indian army will also be further customised based on specific use. Tata Safari is indeed a much better, spacious and comfortable SUV and a good buying choice by the Army.

Australia signs deal worth almost $1b with PsiQuantum to build world's first 'useful' quantum computer
Australia will invest almost a billion dollars in a bid to build the world's first commercially useful quantum computer in Brisbane.
The Queensland and Australian governments have set aside $470 million each in grants, loans and share purchases for the company PsiQuantum.
PsiQuantum will attempt to build the world's first large "fault-tolerant" quantum computer, free from the errors and instabilities that render other quantum computers impractical.
The company said this would be the world's first "useful" quantum computer, capable of being used in industry, research and defence without significant errors.
Australia's Chief Scientist Cathy Foley told ABC Radio Brisbane quantum computers would soon be a part of everyone's everyday life.
"It's going to be the most complex machine ever built by humanity," Dr Foley said.
"Quantum computing is going to revolutionise computing power because it can use different principles of physics that we previously couldn't access," she said.
"We'll be able to solve complex problems that we just can't do — even very basic ones like how to work out the best route for trucking or organising ports and even high school timetables."
She said the Queensland government had set aside $5 million to research how quantum computing could help organise the logistics of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
PsiQuantum was co-founded by two Australian University of Queensland graduates, Jeremy O'Brien and Terry Rudolph, in America's Silicon Valley.
As part of the deal, the company will relocate to Brisbane, where it will build its warehouse-sized supercooled quantum computer.
Dr Foley said the Australian scientific community was "very excited" to see Australian governments invested in developing its technology within its borders.
She said Australian scientists wanted to avoid a repeat of what happened with photovoltaic cells, which were invented at the University of NSW but then exported and commercialised in China.
University of Queensland Professor Andrew White said the first breakthroughs in quantum mechanics were made by Brisbane researchers at least 20 years ago.
Professor White said the new quantum computer will have immediate uses in industry and scientific research.
But in the next 30 to 40 years, the technology will become more widely available and "change everything", much like the personal computer did, he said.
How do they work?
Professor White says quantum computers use the principles of nature to perform many more calculations than a classical computer is capable of doing.
He said quantum computers harnessed the "weird" power of quantum mechanics to solve problems that were too complex for any classical computer.
"In quantum mechanics, things can genuinely be in two places at once — we call that superposition," Professor White said.
"There's a thing called entanglement where quantum systems correlate with each other and it looks like nature's cheating.
"So what we're trying to do with quantum computers is hack nature, do the stuff that she's doing all the time and use it to our advantage."
Federal Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic said the government did not wish to repeat the mistakes of the past by allowing this technology to go overseas.
He said Australia's historical failures to support a local chip manufacturing industry had meant those industries had moved to Asia.
"[PsiQuantum] left our shores because they didn't think that we'd had an interest or a desire to back this type of technology," Mr Husic said.
"Now these Australians want to come home to ensure that we can become a tech manufacturing powerhouse."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government wanted Australia to become a centre for quantum growth for the rest of the planet.
"We are proud to be working with the Queensland government to make visionary investments in the future of our nation," he said.
"This investment shows we are serious about building a strong quantum ecosystem here in Australia."
PsiQuantum's Terry Rudolph told ABC Radio Brisbane that Queensland researchers had been uncovering the physics behind quantum computing over the last 25 years.
However, Professor Rudolph said that it was only since 2015 that the practical engineering problems began to seem solvable.
He said the company was confident that Queensland had the expertise in engineering, manufacturing, science, and technology to pull it off.
"There's many problems we know that, even if we turned all the silicon in the solar system into a classical computer, we would never be able to solve those problems," he said.
"The cool thing is for some of those same problems we know we would never solve with a classical computer, the total number of steps it's going to take on a quantum computer is vastly less."
Queensland Premier Steven Miles said the state should not lose another opportunity to support a burgeoning industry.
"By being early adopting ... we can ensure that industry develops here, and we're not trying 20 or 30 years later to play catch-up," he said.
"This is all about adding an additional capacity to our state that will be recognised globally and draw investment to Queensland from right around the world."

Chinese miners see opportunities as bhp’s mega bid unfolds.
(Bloomberg) -- China’s leading metals companies, including its state iron ore buyer, are considering their next moves following BHP Group’s blockbuster $39 billion approach for rival Anglo American Plc, potentially the largest mining deal in over a decade.

The world’s top consumer of commodities including copper and iron ore, China and its regulators play a key role in any global resources combination. In the aftermath of last week’s proposal, its mining companies are still trying to understand the exact configuration of a deal that is still in flux.
That includes the impact on tight supply of copper concentrate for the country’s smelters. An enlarged BHP could affect concentrate pricing, given the world’s largest miner uses an index provided by third parties and not an annual benchmark established through negotiation between leading miners and Chinese smelters.
People working in and with Chinese metal companies said the scale of this new entity — should an offer reach the finish line, after Anglo’s swift initial rejection — would almost certainly mean asset sales, forced by regulators or initiated by the company, a potential opening for Beijing and its key miners.
The people, who could not be identified as the discussions are private, said access to additional secure supply could help China’s bargaining power at a time of fraying diplomatic ties with the West. It could also help efforts to safeguard a vast domestic processing and manufacturing industry, they said.

Miners like Zijin Mining, China Minmetals Corp. and others are likely to examine closely a deal that creates the world’s top copper producer, the people said. But state iron ore buyer China Mineral Resources Group may also step in. Set up in 2022, it has struggled to achieve its official aim of increasing China’s clout in the iron ore market, even with financial and domestic political support.
The people said CMRG, given its role in iron ore, would likely participate in government discussions around the combination of BHP and Anglo. Assets including Minas Rio, in Brazil, could be among those that appeal. BHP has not signalled it would seek to sell Anglo’s high-grade iron ore operation — but antitrust officials may force its hand.
CMRG could potentially add metallurgical coal, copper or other strategic metals too.
China’s major miners have waded into mega mergers before. Aluminum Corp. of China, known as Chinalco, took a stake in Rio Tinto during BHP’s ultimately unsuccessful 2007-2008 takeover effort.
To get the combination of Glencore Plc and Xstrata approved a few years later, meanwhile, the trader and miner had to sell its Las Bambas project in Peru, after China’s regulator raised concerns about excessive clout in the copper market, again fretting about concentrate. The deposit was bought by a group including China Minmetals’ MMG Ltd. a year later, in 2014, for $5.9 billion.
Indeed, antitrust action from China is almost guaranteed, legal experts have said. China’s competition regime has undergone some changes in the decade since Glencore’s deal, but the basics remain - Beijing’s watchdog always considers the usual questions of market impact but also take a broad view of national security.
That includes access to key strategic commodities.
“China is likely to be concerned about this deal, as it heavily relies on importing copper raw materials and the transaction would create the world’s largest copper supplier. To address these concerns, China may impose structural remedies as conditions for approving the merger, such as requiring the divestiture of assets,” said Angela Zhang, associate professor at The University of Hong Kong and an expert on Chinese antitrust regulation.
“The Chinese government doesn’t necessarily need to block the transaction outright,” Zhang said. “Instead, a simple delay in reviewing the transaction could provide the government with significant leverage, effectively holding up the transaction process.”

‘Stay long and strong’: Strategist sees the S&P 500 reaching 5,750 by year-end — here are 2 stocks to play that bullish sentiment
US stocks took a sharp plunge yesterday, wrapping up what has been Wall Street’s worst month in 2024. The downturn was spurred by hotter than expected labor data, heightening investor anticipation for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision. Despite this setback, the S&P 500 still boasts a 5.5% gain for the year. In fact, there’s optimism from at least one strategist who thinks the index still has plenty room to run. Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Advisors, believes th

Centers of gravity, not black holes:experts discuss new moscow metro stations, united kingdom architecture news - jan 22, 2015 - 10:42 4579 views.
In 2015 Moscow will see a wide range of new capital transportation facilities, and their design is just as important. We asked four jury members of the recent design competition for metro stations Solntsevo and Novoperedelkino to tell us more about this aspect.
Erken Kagarov, Vice President of The Academy of the Graphic Design, art director of “Art. Lebedev Studio”:
“Being a designer, first of all I did my best to evaluate the visual aspect of the offered solutions. Besides that it was important for me to see something new and original. Otherwise, why bother organizing a competition?
As for the results of the contest, I am under the impression that we tried to get everything at once, and that was a mistake. The winning projects are quite expressive and not too expensive. Unfortunately, they are not at all ground-breaking. If we take a look at the history of Moscow metro and the work of one of its best creators, Alexey Dushkin, we’ll see that he was constantly inventing and reinventing certain techniques and materials: he was the first one to use stainless steel to decorate Mayakovskaya, he came up with the idea of columns lit from below for Kropotkinskaya, he put up stained-glass panels underground, where the sun doesn’t ever shine, on Novokuznetskaya......
