Introduction
The Accidental Tourist is an amusing story by Bill Bryson who shares his experiences during air travels. He finds himself involved in difficult and embarrassing situations as a tourist. He has a confused personality and is always in troubles. His tendency to cause unintentional accidents makes the story humorous and entertaining. Bill Bryson is a narrator of the story and keeps on committing blunders whenever he is travelling. Bill Bryson’s Wife , narrator’s wife knows that the narrator commits mistakes while travelling. So, she asks her children to help the narrator whenever they are travelling together.
The narrator believed that he is not at all good at living in the real world. He felt amazed at how other people were able to do things so easily which he was unable to perform. He got easily confused. At many times he was unable to find the lavatory (washroom) in a cinema. He also forgets his hotel room number. He goes two or three times in a day at the hotel desk to enquire about the room number.
On Easter, the narrator went to England with his family for a week. On the Logan Airport in Boston, he suddenly remembered that he had a discount card of British Airways frequent flyer programme. The card was kept in the carry on bag. When the narrator tried to open his bag he found that the zip of the bag was jammed. He pulled the zip harder in anger. The zip of bag broke up and all things like tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, papers, money, etc. were spread over a large area. Suddenly, he realised that his finger got injured in the incident and it was bleeding. His wife looked at him with wonder as he had caused so much mess.
The narrator always had mis happenings while travelling in an aeroplane that resulted into inconvenience to many passengers. Once on a flight, the narrator bent to tie his shoelace and someone on the seat ahead of him pushed his seat back. The back of the seat hitted the narrator’s head. He had to hold the leg of the other passenger to manage his position. On another flight, he dropped soft drink on the lady sitting beside him.
The flight attendant helped her clean up and got him another drink. He also dropped the second glass on that lady. He was confused on how it happened. The worst experience on the flight was once happened when the narrator was writing his thoughts in a notebook. He was sucking the other end of the pen from time to time and also talking to a woman seated beside him. After sometime, when he went to the washroom, he saw that the ink had leaked from his pen and made his mouth, teeth, gums and chin navy blue in colour.
The narrator wanted to be suaved (civilised). He wanted to leave the dining table neat and clean. He wanted that whenever he sits in the car, he should not leave the sleeve of his coat stuck in the door. He does not wanted to stain his light coloured trousers by sitting on various things.
On the flight, when narrator’s family was served meals, his wife directed the children to cover their heads with the hood to save themselves from the mess that their father (narrator) would create while eating. To keep himself away from any mishap, the narrator does not eat, drink or bend to tie his shoelaces when he travels alone. He sits very quietly and keeps his hands under him to prevent them from moving. He did not enjoy sitting like that but it helped him saving the laundary expenditure.
The narrator was a frequent traveller but he never got his discount on air miles. He must fly 100,000 miles a year but he had gathered only about 212 air miles from twenty three airlines. The reasons were that sometimes he forgot to ask for air miles or sometimes the airlines did not record them.
Once the narrator was travelling to Australia from which he was going to get about a Zillion air miles. But, he cannot get any discount on miles because the clerk told him that his name on the ticket was B Bryson while the name on the card was W Bryson. Consequently, he does not got any air miles and also he could not travel to Bali in first class.

The Accidental Tourist is a humorous story in which the author reflects humorously his experiences as a traveller. It is a common opinion among the people that the world today is a small place because travel has become easy, but at the same time it also a fact that not everybody finds it easy to travel.
Summary in English
Here the author describes his lack of skill while travelling. He finds himself unable to manage things properly and wonders how other people do them without difficulty. A number of times he fails to find the washroom in a cinema-hall and ends up standing in an alley of the self-locking door. He also easily forgets the number of his room in a hotel. He feels that living in the real world is perhaps the most difficult thing.
Once on Easter the author went for a trip with his family. They were flying to England for a week. They were checking in at the Logan Airport in Boston. He remembered that he had joined British AirwaysтАЩ frequent flyer programme and he had put the card in his carry-on bag. It hung around his neck.
The zip on the bag was jammed. He pulled at it with anger. His things like tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, money, etc., spread over a large area. He looked at these things in great surprise. He cursed at his tobacco. He had injured his finger. There was a deep wound. He was confused. His wife looked at him in wonder.
The author was always confused in his air travels and caused confusion to others. Once he bent to tie his shoe lace, someone pushed his seat back, he got pinned to the floor and had to catch the leg of the man near him.
On another occasion he knocked soft drinks on the lap of a lady twice.
His worst experience was when he was writing his thoughts on a plane flight. He had his pen in his mouth. It leaked while he was talking to the lady in the next seat.
The authorтАЩs wife cautioned the children on the flight about the author. He would cut the meat but it would fly. But when he was alone he did not eat or drink.
The author did not get his flyers miles in that way as he couldnтАЩt find his card in time. He must fly 1,00,000 miles a year. But he could only gather 212 air miles from twenty-three airlines.
This was because he forgot to ask for the air miles. Sometimes the airline didnтАЩt record these. The airline clerk informed him he was not entitled to them.
In January he flew to Australia hoping to get about million miles. The airline clerk informed him he was not entitled to them. He asked the reason. The clerk said the ticket was in the name of B. Bryson and the card was in the name of W. Bryson. He explained that Bill and William were hardly different but she didnтАЩt accept that. Thus, the author didnтАЩt get his air miles.

Incident on a Big Trip with Family
Once the narrator and his family went to England on Easter. At the time of check-in at the airport, he remembered that he was a member of the airlines frequent flyer programme. When he tried to take his membership card out from his bag, he found that the zip of his handbag was jammed. He pulled the zip, harder and harder but it did not open. Finally, it opened and in the process, all the contents (newspaper cuttings, passport, magazines, etc) of the bag got spread everywhere on the floor in a very large area. He also injured his finger badly while opening the zip.

Incidents in the Aeroplane
The narrator always had mishappenings while travelling on an aeroplane. Once, he leaned to tie a shoelace and at the same time the passenger sitting ahead of him turned back his chair. Due to this, he got stuck in a miserable position and escaped from it with great difficulty. At another instance, he dropped soft drink twice on a lady sitting beside him. The lady looked at him with a stunned expression.

Once, the narrator was writing his thoughts in a notebook on a flight. He was also sucking the other end of his pen from time to time. Reason for not Gathering FlyerтАЩs Miles
The narrator used to fly around 100,000 miles a year but he hardly gathered over 200 air miles from 23 air lines. This was because he forgot to ask for the air miles or the airline staff did not record his airmiles.

The Accidental Tourist Introduction
This is a humorous storey in which the author recounts incidents in which he acts clumsily. He tries to be sophisticated, but is unable to do so, and ends up spilling drinks, smearing ink on his face, and making a mess on the dining table.
The Accidental Tourist Summary
In "The Accidental Tourist," the author recounts incidents in which he behaves strangely. On several flights, he spills drinks on fellow passengers. It's as if his arms move towards the tray on their own and knock – off the glass without his assistance. He would be unable to obtain the air miles because he would either be unable to present his card or the clerk would refuse to award him the points. He once threw all of his belongings on the floor while opening his bag to get the card. Things flew everywhere, and there was total chaos.
Ink from his pen also smeared his mouth, teeth, gums, and chin on another trip. His face turned blue and stayed that way for a few days. When he bent forward to tie his shoelace, the front seat reclined and his head became stuck there. Whenever he ate a meal, the dining table was a complete mess, as if an earthquake had struck. His family had grown accustomed to it, and whenever they received their meal, they would become attentive in order to avoid becoming victims of the spillovers.
He would not eat, drink, or bend forward while travelling alone. To avoid mishaps, he would even keep his hands under him. He never got the airmiles and would not travel to Bali for free, which was a good thing in a way. On such a long flight, he couldn't go without food.
The Accidental Tourist Lesson Explanation
OF all the things I am not very good at, living in the real world is perhaps the most outstanding. I am constantly filled with wonder at the number of things that other people do without any evident difficulty that are pretty much beyond me. I cannot tell you the number of times that I have gone looking for the lavatory in a cinema, for instance, and ended up standing in an alley on the wrong side of a self locking door. My particular specialty now is returning to hotel desks two or three times a day and asking what my room number is. I am, in short, easily confused.

I was thinking about this the last time we went en famille on a big trip. It was at Easter, and we were flying to England for a week. When we arrived at Logan Airport in Boston and were checking in, I suddenly remembered that I had recently joined British Airways’ frequent flyer programme. I also remembered that I had put the card in the carry-on bag that was hanging around my neck. And here’s where the trouble started.

The zip on the bag was jammed. So I pulled on it and yanked at it, with grunts and frowns and increasing consternation. I kept this up for some minutes but it wouldn’t budge, so I pulled harder and harder, with more grunts. Well, you can guess what happened. Abruptly the zip gave way. The side of the bag flew open and everything within — newspaper cuttings and other loose papers, a 14- ounce tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, English money, film — was extravagantly ejected over an area about the size of a tennis court.

I watched dumbstruck as a hundred carefully sorted documents came raining down in a fluttery cascade, coins bounced to a variety of noisy oblivions and the now-lidless tin of tobacco rolled crazily across the concourse disgorging its contents as it went.

My finger!” as I discovered that I had gashed my finger on the zip and was shedding blood in a lavish manner. (I am not very good around flowing blood generally, but when it’s my own— well, I think hysterics are fully justified.) Confused and unable to help, my hair went into panic mode.

He screamed that his tobacco was being ruined because it was an expensive item. The next thing he knew, he had a cut on his finger that was bleeding. His screams became "my finger." He became disoriented and panicked once more.
It was at this point that my wife looked at me with an expression of wonder — not anger or exasperation, but just simple wonder — and said, “I can’t believe you do this for a living.”

The flight attendant came and cleaned her up, and brought me a replacement drink, and instantly I knocked it onto the woman again. To this day, I don’t know how I did it. I just remember reaching out for the new drink and watching helplessly as my arm, like some cheap prop in one of those 1950s horror movies with a name like The Undead Limb, violently swept the drink from its perch and onto her lap.

On another flight, he threw a drink at the woman sitting next to him. The flight attendant assisted her in cleaning up and getting him another drink. He also threw the second glass at her. He couldn't figure out what had happened. He remembered watching helplessly as his arm acted like a prop from an old horror film. His arm reached for the glass and swept it away without him instructing it to do so, just as they moved inevitably.
The lady looked at me with the stupefied expression you would expect to receive from someone whom you have repeatedly drenched, and uttered an oath that started with “Oh”, finished with “sake” and in between had some words that I have never heard uttered in public before, certainly not by a nun.

The other passenger was shocked by his actions. He was cursed by her.
This, however, was not my worst experience on a plane flight. My worst experience was when I was writing important thoughts in a notebook (‘buy socks’, ‘clutch drinks carefully’, etc.), sucking thoughtfully on the end of my pen as you do, and fell into conversation with an attractive young lady in the next seat. I amused her for perhaps 20 minutes with a scattering of urbane bons mots, then retired to the lavatory where I discovered that the pen had leaked and that my mouth, chin, tongue, teeth and gums were now a striking, scrub-resistant navy blue, and would remain so for several days.

They'd be stained for a couple of days.
So you will understand, I trust, when I tell you how much I ache to be suave. I would love, just once in my life, to rise from a dinner table without looking as if I have just experienced an extremely localised seismic event, get in a car and close the door without leaving 14 inches of coat outside, wear light-coloured trousers without discovering at the end of the day that I have at various times sat on chewing gum, ice cream, cough syrup and motor oil. But it is not to be.

But he isn't capable of acting like that.
Now on planes when the food is delivered, my wife says: “Take the lids off the food for Daddy” or “Put your hoods up, children. Daddy’s about to cut his meat”. Of course, this is only when I am flying with my family. When I am on my own, I don’t eat, drink or lean over to tie my shoelaces, and never put a pen anywhere near my mouth. I just sit very, very quietly, sometimes on my hands to keep them from flying out unexpectedly and causing liquid mischief. It’s not much fun, but it does at least cut down on the laundry bills.
When they are served meals on a plane, his wife instructs the children to cover their heads with the hood to protect themselves from the mess that he will make while eating. He does not eat, drink, or bend to tie his shoelaces when he travels alone. He doesn't even get the pen close to his mouth. He sits quietly and keeps his hands under him to keep them from moving around. He does not enjoy sitting like that, but it helps him by laundry expenditure.
I never did get my frequent flyer miles, by the way. I never do. I couldn’t find the card in time. This has become a real frustration for me. Everyone I know — everyone— is forever flying off to Bali first class with their air miles. I never get to collect anything. I must fly 100,000 miles a year, yet I have accumulated only about 212 air miles divided between twenty-three airlines.
He never gets his frequent flyer miles because he can't find his card. All of his friends use these points to fly to Bali, but despite flying on 23 different airlines, he has only accumulated 212 air miles.
This is because either I forget to ask for the air miles when I check in, or I remember to ask for them but the airline then manages not to record them, or the check-in clerk informs me that I am not entitled to them. In January, on a flight to Australia — a flight for which I was going to get about a zillion air miles — the clerk shook her head when I presented my card and told me I was not entitled to any.
Either he forgets to request the air miles at check-in, the manager fails to record them, or he is told that he is not eligible for any points. He went to Australia in January and could have gotten a lot of points for it, but the clerk doesn't give him the points.
“Why?”
“The ticket is in the name of B. Bryson and the card is in the name of W. Bryson.”
She reasoned that the names on the card and the plane ticket were different.
I explained to her the close and venerable relationship between Bill and William, but she wouldn’t have it.

Bill Bryson wrote the entertaining story The Accidental Tourist, in which he humorously reflects on his travel experiences. He casually describes various incidents that occurred while he was traveling to different locations. He wonders how other people manage to complete their daily tasks with ease. He struggles to live a normal life and wonders how others do it so easily.
The author once traveled to England with his family for Easter. While checking in at Logan Airport in Boston, he suddenly remembered that he had joined British Airways’ frequent flyer programme. He remembered that he had placed the card in the carry-on bag that hung around his neck. When he tried to open the bag, the zip was clogged, so he used pressure to open it.
The zip snapped during the process, causing everything inside the bag to spill all over the place. The author also discovered that his finger was injured and trapped in the zip. Furthermore, the author discusses the unexpected difficulties he faces while traveling. During one such flight, he leaned over to tie his shoelaces.
He was stuck when the person in front of him fully reclined his seat. In another incident, he spilled soft drinks on his co-passenger. Although the flight attendant cleaned up the mess, the author spilled another drink on the same passenger. The lady was completely soaked and irritated with the author for the inconvenience he caused her.
Later, when he went to the bathroom, he discovered that the pen had unintentionally leaked, resulting in blue ink on his teeth, tongue, and mouth. Despite his gentlemanly demeanor, the author is always caught in a difficult situation. The author clarifies that such unexpected situations do occur, especially when he is traveling with his family.
When he travels alone, everything works perfectly because he sits quietly in his seat and avoids tying his shoelaces if necessary. He avoids making mistakes while traveling on his own. He admits to being careless in updating his frequent flyer card due to time constraints.
On several occasions, he either forgot to request the air miles from the airline authorities, or the airline did not record them on time. He mentions instances where the airline informed him that he was not eligible to use air miles. He was once unable to use his air miles because his name did not match on the ticket, rendering him ineligible to travel to Bali on a first-class ticket.

Author makes mess at airport Once the author went on a big trip with his family. It was Easter. They were flying to England for a week. They were checking in Logan Airport in Boston. He remembered then that he had recently joined British AirwaysтАЩ frequent flyer programme. He also remembered that he had put the card in his carry-on bag. It hung around his neck.
Contents of authorтАЩs bag out The zip on the bag was jammed. He got angry. He pulled at it in anger. The zip gave way. His things Jike the tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, money etc, spread over a large area. He looked at these things in great surprise. He cried at his tobacco. He had got his finger injured. Blood was coming from it. There was a deep wound. He was greatly confused. His wife looked at him in wonder.
Author pinned to the floor The author was always confused in his air travels. He caused great inconveniences to other passengers. Once he bent over to tie his shoelace. Then someone pushed his seat back. He got pinned on the floor. He had to catch the leg of the man near him.
The author knocks a soft drink on a lady On another occasion he knocked soft drinks on to the lap of a lady two times. The lady looked at him in surprise. She uttered an oath with тАШOhтАЩ. This was not his worst experience.
When pen leaked while flying His worst experience was another. On a plane flight he was writing his thoughts. He had his pen in his mouth. It leaked while he was talking to a lady next seat. He went to the toilet. He saw that his mouth, chin, tongue, teeth and gums had got navy blue.
How he flew The authorтАЩs wife cautioned the children on plane flights about the author. He would cut the meat. But it would fly. But when alone, he did not eat or drink. He would sit quietly. This would cut his laundry bills.
Why he couldnтАЩt gather miles The author did not get his flyer miles in that way. He couldnтАЩt find the card in time. He knew that others were flying first class to Bali with their air miles. But he couldnтАЩt collect anything. He must fly 100,000 miles a year. But he had hardly gathered only about 212 air miles from twenty-three airlines.
This was because he forgot to ask for the air miles. Sometimes the airline didnтАЩt record these. The airline clerk informed him that he was not entitled to them.
Reason for not gathering miles In January he flew to Australia. He hoped to get about a zillion air miles. But the clerk told him that he was not entitled. He asked the reason. The clerk told that the ticket was in the name of B. Bryson. But the card was in the name of W. Bryson. He explained that both Bill and William were hardly different. But she didnтАЩt accept that.
Result of not gathering miles Thus, the author didnтАЩt get his air miles. He wonтАЩt fly to Bali first class. He could never go that long without eating.
