The United States is vast and full of mountain ranges. However, on most of these mountains, there is no snow for several months out of the year which raises the question of “what exactly do you do on a mountain with no snow?”

The answer is ziplining and it’s quite possibly the best mountain adventure you can have without putting on a pair of skis. But, ziplines come in all shapes and sizes and there are plenty of unique ziplines off the mountain, too. The US has multitudes of adrenaline-pumping adventures suited to all ages and abilities. But, with 50 states and so many ziplines to choose from, here are 20 across the country that you definitely don’t want to miss out on!

The Twin Zip Flyers start at the summit of Camelback Mountain and you and your closest friend can race all the way to the base of the mountain. Camelback Mountain is located only two hours from New York City and is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Canopy Tours NW Zipline Adventures

Camano island, washington.

Canopy Tours NW is a family affair! Mr. Kristoferson bought the farm back in 1912 to raise dairy cows. But, today half of the 230-acre property is dedicated to producing certified organic lavender and hay while the other half is a forest that produces an organic, one-of-a-kind good time! 5 generations of Kristoferson’s have run the dairy farm turned zipline adventures course. This 2-hour course will take you over six zip lines, including the state’s second longest, of 660 feet for unbeatable mountain views. While a zipline course on a farm seems a bit far-fetched, the Kristoferson’s feel that it fits their mission of low-impact development and sustainability perfectly.

With the  Pikes Peak Tour by Gray Line  experience, you can leave the driving to the experts and summit the awe-inspiring fourteener from the comfort of cozy seats in a roomy, temperature-controlled tour coach.

While many tours may rush you to and from your destination, Gray Line Tours — which has a 42-year history of showing visitors the beauty of Colorado — makes your Pikes Peak tour a leisurely adventure. During the tour’s four-hour span, you’ll make frequent stops at locations such as Crystal Reservoir, historic Glen Cove, the coveted summit of Pikes Peak and many other points of interest. Not only do these stops allow you lots of opportunities to snap shots of the amazing scenery, they also help you adapt to the altitude in a way that zipping straight to the top will not. Wide windows allow for maximum oohing and aahing when you’re in the tour bus, ensuring you won’t miss a minute of the sights that abound on Pikes Peak.

No tour of Pikes Peak is complete without a great guide, and the drivers and tour guides at Gray Line strike the perfect balance of knowledge, friendliness and humor that is anything but stuffy or boring. It’s more like a casual conversation between friends — which is exactly how it should be! By the time you’ve finished the journey, you’ll know everything about the flora and fauna of the Pikes Peak region, from the pines and columbines, to the big horn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots. You’ll also learn about the geology of the mountain and its history.

You’ll be able to focus on the sights and sounds stress-free because Gray Line drivers are second to none, with safety as their primary focus at all times. No one knows the switchbacks, hairpin turns and inclement weather conditions better — after all, Gray Line vehicles climb Pikes Peak as many as four times a day in the summer, not to mention daily tours in the fall, winter and spring. In short, their drivers know the Pikes Peak Highway like it’s the road home and they’ll make you feel safe and secure throughout the journey.

Once you hit the top of Pikes Peak, you’ll be able to explore the summit for 30-40 minutes. Take photos, peek over the rocks and edges and make a stop in the Summit Visitor Center. Inside are snacks and more filling fare, including burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches. You can also get fresh-made fudge (get extra for the ride back). Your trip back to the  Pikes Peak Tour by Gray Line basecamp in downtown Colorado Springs will be just as relaxing and filled with beautiful sights as your trip up the Pikes Peak Highway.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Courtesy of ArcheoRunning

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year – which means it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – is well worth it, though.

Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at, which is why tours are a popular way to explore. A good tour will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring this incredible place to life.

Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the hypogeum (Colosseum underground), you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Price: From 499 euros per person (about $548) Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes

For a deeper understanding of the Colosseum, a private tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can take. As an archaeologist, Bove has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other historic sites. Her Colosseum tour typically includes the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, the Arch of Constantine, Via Sacra and the House of Vestal Virgin. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum (Colosseum underground) when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Best for Families: LivTours – The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Price: Adults from 139 euros (about $153); kids from $124 (about $136) Duration: 3 hours

Recent visitors praise the guides on this tour for bringing the stories about ancient Rome to life and entertaining everyone along the way — kids included.

Upon booking this tour, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants note that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Price: From $60.46 per person Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

A nighttime tour of the Colosseum not only affords an opportunity to see the famous landmark aglow, but it also allows visitors to avoid some of the crowds and high temps that come with a daytime visit. Recent tourgoers say they enjoyed the tour for these reasons, also noting that the guides are excellent. However, many wish the tour were a bit longer (or priced cheaper considering its short duration). The tour does not cover the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill.

Evening departure times vary by time of year.

Rome Tours offers a variety of other tours throughout the city, from a comprehensive daytime tour of the Colosseum to a bar crawl .

Frequently Asked Questions

Most tours last about three hours and require that you arrive at your departure point early. Factoring in transportation time, you'll want to allot at least a half-day of your vacation itinerary for the Colosseum.

The best time to visit the Colosseum is from November through February during the offseason (and when temperatures are cooler).

There isn't a dress code for the Colosseum, so plan to simply wear comfortable, seasonally appropriate attire (and know that summers in Rome can be extremely hot). No matter when you go, comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

5 of the Best Louvre Skip the Line Tours & Tickets

The Louvre is among the finest art museums in the world. Enhance your visit with a little help skipping the queue and navigating the huge interior on these top tours.

There is much about the Louvre (the Mona Lisa, for example) that draws visitors in their droves. Located inside the elegant Louvre Palace, which was started life as the Louvre Castle in the late 12th century, the museum took over in the 18th century, continuing to expand until architect I.M. Pei added the landmark glass pyramids in the main courtyard in 1987. Despite the crowds, it is possible to buy skip-the-queue tickets. And being the world’s largest art museum, a good tour guide will get you to the main artworks with a minimum of fuss.

Louvre Museum Timed-entrance Ticket

One system used by the Louvre to mediate the masses of visitors is to have a timed entry ticket. Enter the museum during a narrow, strict window of time, then spend as long as you want (opening hours-permitting) among the treasures of human creativity once you’re through the doors. There is no guide provided in this option, so it suits those who prefer to experience things at their own pace using the museum’s insightful information panels to add context to the visuals. From €20 per person.

Louvre Masterpieces Tour with Pre-reserved Tickets

See highlights of the Louvre collection, such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo , in two hours, which includes a bypass of the queues, allowing you to enter quickly. Although there are roughly 35,000 artworks on display, your guide will lead you straight to the masterpieces, including Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People and the Winged Victory of Samothrace , a fascinating sculpture from Ancient Greece, among many others. As with the other guided tours, you’re also free to remain in the Louvre and explore at your leisure, after the highlights tour has ended. From €58 per person.

Louvre Museum Entry Ticket with Guidance to Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is synonymous with the Louvre Museum, having been the star of its collection since first going on display in the late 18 th century. For many who visit the museum, with an urge to experience the best artworks but suffering from a lack of time, this tour is the best way to experience Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece. Skip the line with your ticket then meet a member of the museum’s staff to get a valuable insight into the history of the Louvre as you navigate its galleries on your way to the room where the Mona Lisa resides. From €50 per person.

Louvre 3-hour Guided Tour with Skip the Line Entrance

If you have a little more time to spare your guide can provide far more insight into the subtler details of the art. You’ll also have the chance to discover some of the more oft-overlooked treasures inside the gallery, such as the Great Sphinx of Tanis , which might be bypassed on shorter tours in favor of the big hitters like the Mona Lisa . The tour is particularly great for understanding the Renaissance riches of the Louvre, with works from preeminent artists including Caravaggio, Raphael, Michelangelo, as well as Leonardo da Vinci. From €63 per person.

Paris: Louvre Museum Guided Tour

An alternative tour option incorporates a walk through the Tuileries Gardens, with their topiary bushes, statuary and vast fountains. Then skip-the-line on your way into the Louvre, where your guide will highlight the various galleries, such as the Medieval section, and lead you on a 90-minute tour through the cavernous rooms to see the classics, as well as the sublime Winged Victory of Samothrace statue, which has been in the Louvre for many years. From €80 per person.
