Cannes 2024 : George Lucas : « Le secret d’un bon film ? La persévérance »

Après Meryl Streep à l’ouverture, c’est au tour de George Lucas, cet immense figure du cinéma hollywoodien, de recevoir du Festival une Palme d’Honneur pour l’ensemble de son œuvre.

Et quelle œuvre marquée principalement du sceau de la saga des «  Star Wars  » et de ses effets spéciaux qui ont opéré un changement radical dans la vision du cinéma des grands studios à Hollywood : d’un coup, ils ont tourné le dos aux réalisateurs hippies des années 70 pour aduler tous ceux qui leur proposaient des films à effets spéciaux !

Par ailleurs scénariste et coproducteur d’une autre série de légende du cinéma américain, les « Indiana Jones », George Lucas a rencontré son public, ses fans de la première heure, ce vendredi, à Cannes. Dans une salle comble, il a eu droit à une standing ovation de plusieurs minutes, à en avoir la chair de poule. Morceaux choisis d’une rencontre exceptionnelle.

Ses études :

Je n’étais pas un très bon élève au collège. Ensuite, j’ai suivi une formation en anthropologie et en sciences sociales, mais ça n’a pas marché. A Sacramento, j’ai vu qu’il y avait une section « photographie ». En fait, elle était appelée ainsi improprement puisque c’était une section cinéma. Mais aller à l’Université pour apprendre à faire du cinéma, c’est absurde ! Même si j’y ai appris à déplacer une caméra. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que le cinéma, c’était fait pour moi ».

Le nouvel Hollywood :

« Pour travailler pour les grands studios à Hollywood, il fallait être pistonné. J’avais fait la connaissance de Francis Ford Coppola. Il voulait faire un premier film. Francis m’a dit d’écrire le script du film que moi je voulais tourner et que j’allais être payé pour son écriture. On est alors allé à San Francisco où on aurait plus de liberté qu’à Los Angeles. Ensemble, et aussi avec Paul Schrader, on a formé ce qu’on a appelé « Le Nouvel Hollywood ».

THX 1138 à Cannes :

« Mon premier film, c’est « THX 1138 ». C’était en 1971. On avait été sélectionné à Cannes à la section « La Quinzaine des réalisateurs ». La production n’a pas voulu nous payer nos frais parce que La Quinzaine, ce n’était pas dans la course pour la Palme d’Or ! Le lendemain de la projection, on m’a demandé pourquoi je ne m’étais présenté à la conférence de presse. Mais on ne savait même pas qu’il y avait une conférence de presse ! »

American Graffiti :

« Les producteurs m'avaient dit à propos de « American Graffiti » : vous devriez avoir honte de présenter ça au public ». Mais à chaque projection, le film était ovationné . Pourtant, o n l'a sorti au pire moment de l'année, au mois d'août. En quelques jours il a rapporté 25 millions de dollars ce qui était beaucoup à l'époque. Il est resté un an sur les écrans. Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à un tel succès. Le secret c'est la passion et la persévérance, un scénariste ou un réalisateur doit avoir le droit de faire le film qu'il souhaite, c'est un concept qui date de Michel Ange » . 

Passionné de voitures :

« J’étais passionné par les voitures, je voulais devenir pilote de course. Mais j’ai eu un accident et j’ai dû être hospitalisé. J’ai compris que je n’étais pas fait pour être pilote, que mon truc, c’était la photo puis le cinéma ! Mais la course automobile m’a toujours fasciné. J’ai encore participé à des courses avec des célébrités. Mais comme j’ai eu une fille et que j’en ai ensuite adopté deux, c’était plus raisonnable d’arrêter, les courses étaient trop dangereuses ».

La guerre des étoiles :

« J’ai eu comme un flash en voyant un film des années 30 avec un chien qui pilotait des engins spatiaux. Un responsable de la Fox a cru en mon projet, c’était le seul. Bon, ça a toujours été une bataille pour le budget, le nombre de jours de tournage que je dépassais systématiquement, il fallait tout le temps marchander sous la menace de tout arrêter. D’autant qu’au début, le film n’était projeté que dans trente-deux petites salles. J’ai réussi à le convaincre de le projeter dans plus de mille salles. On a fait fortune, il ne l’a jamais regretté ! En fait, j’avais ma propre société de production. La Fox avait un pourcentage net sur les recettes. Je me souviens qu’on avait rédigé le contrat nous-même, ce qui ne se faisait jamais à l’époque ! »

En sortant de cette rencontre, une pointe de déception flottait dans l’air : George Lucas avait surtout parlé d’argent, de financement et de recettes. Et moins de cinéma…

Jérôme Bel had wanted to do a show for a long time on the memory of a theatre, on the memory of the shows that would have been presented there. We know that of the shows, of the spectacular representation itself, nothing remains except in the memory of the spectators who attended them. Because it is precisely the very nature of live performance to die, to disappear. This is both its greatness and its weakness. It was while thinking of the Cour d'honneur of the Palais des Papes, undoubtedly one of the most symbolic places of theater in France, that he imagined a solution: a show placed on stage by spectators who themselves tell their memories of this place and the shows they saw there. The spectators invited to participate in this project are theater lovers, or not. They are between eleven and seventy years old; they are a student, teacher, graphic designer or nurse; they live in Vichy, Avignon, Paris or Clermont-Ferrand. Each in their own way, they testify to their experiences as spectators, good or bad. The stakes of this creation are therefore to try to quantify the reception of the shows by the spectators, to measure the influence of art on their lives. In the Court of Honor therefore. Because it was necessary to give the spectator the place he deserved: the place of honor.

All we know is that, when this low-level British diplomat (who, like all the British characters, whether they hail from London or pine for Yorkshire, speaks in Portuguese) shows up at Mandalay train station, it is 1918, near midnight and he is drunk. The next day, when he goes to pick Molly up from her arriving steamship, his nerve suddenly fails, and before he even claps eyes on her, he scarpers onto the next ship bound for Singapore.

This is the story of “Grand Tour,” but it is not the half of “Grand Tour.” From the beginning, Gomes’ eccentric, puckish sensibilities are in evidence, with every beautifully rendered black-and-white, period-set interior alternating with bustling, bristling contemporary footage of the various towns and countries featured. Between 1918 and now, some of them have changed their names — Burma is now Myanmar, Siam is now Thailand — but none have changed their spirit, a fact that the seemingly reckless but actually deceptively meticulous construction makes clear.

Sometimes in color, sometimes in monochrome, with the narrators speaking the local lingo and knitting Edward and Molly’s colonial-era stories into the Asia of today, we get gorgeous on-the-fly snapshots of modern life across the continent. A rickety Rangoon ferris wheel propelled by hand (and foot). Workers untangling the wires atop Saigon’s overloaded telephone poles. Old Chinese men playing mahjong; Filipino locals riding tuktuks; Lunar New Year fireworks exploding over the Saigon skyline; a portly man in a restaurant moving himself to tears with his karaoke rendition of “My Way” before returning to his noodles, dabbing at wet eyes.

The film also has a recurring motif in the puppet shows that seemingly every culture has developed, and developed differently, as a storytelling medium. There are marionettes and paper silhouettes and two-person representations of — are they turkeys? Ostriches? Who knows? But that we always see the puppeteers as much as we see their puppets seems appropriate to the sense we get, throughout this overflowing cornucopia of worldly pleasures, of a single intelligence, a particular curiosity and a uniquely skewed sense of humor unifying so much that, in our darker moods, might seem actually to divide us.

Gomes shot this extraordinary film in an extraordinary way. Hampered by Covid-era restrictions, a lot of the modern footage — credited to three cinematographers in Rui Poças, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom and Guo Liang — was directed remotely, while the period segments, whether in bamboo forests or Raffles Hotel or aboard a ship whose captain speaks in six different languages over the mooing of a cargo hold full of cows, were creations on a sound stage. But even aside from the occasional deliberate anachronism — like a cellphone dropped in a forest when Molly is on the verge of catching up to Edward — and despite the brash collisions of stock and style, and scripted fiction and found-footage reality, “Grand Tour” is a remarkably coherent, if richly complex experience.

Cannes Film Festival awards exotic dancer drama 'Anora' top prize

CANNES — "Anora," a darkly funny and touching drama about a young exotic dancer who becomes involved with a Russian oligarch's son, won the  Cannes Film Festival 's top prize, the Palme d'Or , on Saturday.

The film by U.S. director Sean Baker  beat the 21 other films in the competition line-up, including entries by established directors like Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg .

"Anora" continues a streak of sex worker-focused films by Baker, including the 2021 Cannes entry " Red Rocket " and 2017's " The Florida Project " starring Willem Dafoe .

This win is dedicated to "all sex workers past present and future," he said as he accepted the award, while also thanking the film's star, Mikey Madison , as well as Samantha Quan, his wife and producer.

"This has been my life's goal, so to reach this place is... I'm going to have to do some thinking tonight about what's next," Baker told Reuters after the ceremony.

Jury president Greta Gerwig , the director behind the pink-hued hit " Barbie ," called "Anora" an "incredibly human and humane film that captured our hearts" when announcing the award that was handed out by George Lucas , of " Star Wars " fame.

Cannes 2024 to feature Donald Trump drama, Francis Ford Coppola's 'Megalopolis' and more

Lucas was on stage to receive an honorary award during the festival's closing ceremony from his longtime friend Coppola, whose passion project " Megalopolis " was also in competition.

"I'm just a kid who grew up in the middle of California, surrounded by vineyards, and made films in San Francisco with my friend Francis Coppola," said Lucas at the ceremony.

The Grand Prix, the second-highest prize after the Palme d'Or, was awarded to "All We Imagine As Light," marking the first time an Indian director had won the prize.

Director Payal Kapadia's debut feature about the friendship between three women was the first Indian film in competition in 30 years.

"The fact that we could be here is a testament that if you stick to one thing and don't give up hope, then the film could possibly be made, and we are here," she said.

Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who was in Cannes about two weeks after announcing he had gone into exile, was given a special award for "The Seed of the Sacred Fig," about an Iranian court official who grows increasingly controlling and paranoid as protests begin to swell in 2022.

Is 'Megalopolis' 'bafflingly shallow' or 'remarkably sincere'? Critics can't tell

"Emilia Perez," a musical about a Mexican cartel boss who transitions from male to female, was doubly honored.

Director Jacques Audiard received the jury prize on stage, while the best actress prize was expanded to include all the film's female stars, with jury member Lily Gladstone saying "Emilia Perez" celebrated the "harmony of sisterhood."

Zoe Saldana , Selena Gomez , Karla Sofia Gascon and Adriana Paz all star in the film that Vanity Fair magazine called "a movie unlike any other."

"I want to dedicate this to all the women, trans and non-trans, in the world, this is for you, for all the minorities who are not left in peace when we simply want to go on living," said Gascon, who is the first transgender actress to win the prize.

Jesse Plemons was named best actor for playing three different parts — a struggling police officer, a cult member and a man whose every action is controlled by his boss — in director Yorgos Lanthimos ' absurdist triptych "Kinds of Kindness."

Best screenplay went to "The Substance," a Demi Moore -led body horror about the perils of youth and beauty, while Miguel Gomes took best director for "Grand Tour," an eclectic trip through Asia by a British civil servant and his pursuing fiancee.

The 77th edition of the festival ran from May 14 to 25.

Les arts des Outre-mer à l’honneur, au cœur de la Nuit Blanche 2024 à Paris

La Nuit Blanche garde chaque année Paris éveillée grâce à des performances, des expositions, des concerts, des pièces de théâtre proposés dans l’ensemble des arrondissements de la Capitale.   Initiée il y a vingt-deux ans (en 2002 !), la Nuit Blanche a non seulement changé d'espace-temps (du mois d’octobre, les éditions se tiennent désormais en juin) mais agrandi son terrain de jeu. De Paris à la région parisienne (la Métropole du Grand Paris) jusqu’à certaines villes - et cette année quelques Outre-mer ! - qui calquent aussi des programmes sous ce label culturel.

Et dans cette édition focus sur les Outre-mer qui y trouvent matière à montrer ses talents avec une quinzaine de projets commandés à des artistes évoluant dans l’Hexagone ou vivant dans les territoires, avec au final, dans les rues de Paris, un large spectre de propositions.  

D’un concert baroque revisité à une installation photographique ou d’objets, d’une projection de films à une pièce de théâtre, d’une déambulation à des expositions ; musique, peinture, théâtre, vidéos, defilés… il y aura largement de quoi écarquiller les yeux dans le tout Paris mais aussi dans quelques-uns des Outre-mer qui se sont associés pour l’occasion à cette Nuit Blanche .

Et tous les Outre-mer seront peu ou prou présents ou représentés :  

La Guadeloupe avec Kenny Dunkan pour une performance/procession, Ronald Cyrille qui réalisera une fresque murale, Raphaël Barontini pour une performance/procession, Romuald Grimbert-Barré* ( avec Johana Malédon pour une performance musical et chorégraphique autour du chevalier Saint-Georges.)

La Guyane avec Tabita Rezaire pour une installation textile et vidéo et Johana Malédon*  

La Martinique avec Jean-François Boclé , Julien Boclé , Thierry Pécou pour une création chorégraphique, (à noter également Lucioles , le spectacle signé Astrid Bahiya , avec Délie Andjembe et Stéphanie Coudert, adapté du récit de Patrick Chamoiseau Frères migrants).

La Réunion avec la chorégraphe Soraya Thomas et son dernier opus Les Jupes

La Polynésie avec Orama Nigou pour une installation / performance / video.

La Nouvelle Calédonie avec Abdelwaheb Sefsaf qui montrera Kaldûn Requiem , pièce autour du bagne calédonien.

Mayotte avec Marlon Griffith pour une performance déambulatoire et Laura Henno pour la projection de son film Koropa .

Plusieurs terres d’Outre-mer seront directement associées à l’événement. Si la Nouvelle-Calédonie a du renoncer à sa participation - en raison des tensions sur place depuis quelques semaines -, Mayotte , La Réunion , la Martinique ou la Guadeloupe auront de quoi passer elles aussi la Nuit Blanche , en léger décalage avec Paris : chacune bien sûr vivant cette Nuit dans son propre fuseau horaire !

‘Grand Tour’ Review: Miguel Gomes’ Beguiling Colonial Romance Travels from Saigon to Shanghai in Search of Lost Time

In this case, that story is a love story (of sorts), one that again finds Gomes harkening back to the kind of blinkered colonial romances that were so prevalent in the silent era and the early days of Hollywood. The first of those characters is Edward (a hollowed but ruggedly handsome Gonçalo Waddington), a civil servant for the British Empire. We meet him in Burma towards the end of 1917, where he receives a telegram from the fiancée he hasn’t seen in seven years; it’s finally time for them to tie the knot, and she’ll be in Rangoon by tomorrow. Edward impulsively decides to make sure that he’s gone before she gets there, and hops the next train going anywhere. It derails, but he emerges from the wreckage with a smile on his face. “What a beautiful morning,” he sighs, happily liberated from the chokehold of a history that he managed to escape in the nick of time. 

From there, Edward travels through a variety of other countries on a path that wends its way through the streets of Hanoi, the mountains of Japan, and up the Yangtze River in China among other points of interest. Waddington, however, never appears to leave the confines of the period-appropriate Portuguese soundstage where his scenes were shot, as the brunt of his character’s journey was lensed in the first-person between 2020 and 2022. 

Alas, Edward is neither aware of nor interested in thinking about the poetics of his condition. Growing sourer and more despondent by the minute, the runaway groom fails to appreciate the irony of being guided by a man with three wives, or the splendor of the New Year’s Eve fireworks display he sees in Saigon (Gomes naturally cuts to modern footage of the same event in full color, which is more spectacular but less exciting). To make matters worse, a chipper and undaunted new letter from his fiancée seems to be waiting for him wherever he goes. “Grand Tour” denies us any significant insight into its characters’ minds, lest they threaten to overshadow the film’s concepts, but a man can only read “STOP” on a telegram so many times before he starts to appreciate its double meaning. 

And that is essentially the full extent to which Gomes is willing to explore Molly’s emotions, as “Grand Tour” resists any temptation to create a sentimental connection between his characters, or to use them as conduits for the emotional reaction their story is perversely well-designed to evoke. Indifferent to the nuances of Molly and Edward’s feelings, the movie turns its attention instead on the sights that its would-be lovers are too laser-focused to enjoy. An adorable mini horse in Burma. A very literal twist on carpool karaoke in Manilla. The hum of traffic everywhere. 

The pull of time causes a kind of tunnel vision, echoing the irises that Gomes uses to frame Edward’s plight at the start of the film. At one point, a Vietnamese friend named Ngoc brings Molly to a psychic, who frustrates our heroine by revealing her actual future. When “Grand Tour” finally arrives at its twistiest moment of meta self-reflection, it almost seems as if Gomes — whose films always reflect his free-wheeling approach to their construction — is punishing his characters for their very different but equally strong allegiances to a predetermined choice. 

“Who said that time heals all wounds?,” Marker’s narrator once asked. “It would be better to say that time heals everything except wounds.” Gomes’ film is no more sensitive to the lasting scars of its landscapes than it is to the newer pains of the characters it follows through them, but it nevertheless alights upon a textured — and occasionally even spellbinding — way to retrace the relationship between distance and understanding for a world that would sooner run away from the past than reckon with our conception of it. 

“Grand Tour” premiered in Competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Pour elle, il ne fait donc aucun doute que les deux hommes ont agi sous couvert d'une action disciplinaire occulte, traditionnellement désignée sous le nom de «Code rouge», contre les lâches et les traîtres. Le haut commandement, inquiet et désireux d'obtenir un jugement rapide et discret, dépêche aussitôt le lieutenant Danny Kaffee, jeune avocat de bonne famille, aussi inexpérimenté que nonchalant, et plus familier des stades de base-ball que des prétoires...

Tout le monde connaît le gimmick des marines « Sir ! Yes Sir ! ». En VO « Sir » qui se traduit par « Monsieur », est prononcé pas moins de 164 fois dans ce film, soit 1 fois toutes les 50 secondes en moyenne…

Ceux qui voyaient en Rob Reiner («Quand Harry rencontre Sally») un amuseur vont tomber des nues. Car ce polar judiciaire chez les militaires se prend vraiment au sérieux. On n'est pas obligé de souscrire aux flonflons sur l'honneur, un rien datés, mais on peut admirer les passes d'armes entre Tom Cruise et Jack Nicholson.
