Maxfli Tour vs Tour X: Tested & Reviewed

Maxfli Tour vs Tour X golf balls

  • DESCRIPTION Maxfli Tour vs Tour X golf balls
  • SOURCE Nick Heidelberger

It’s official, low and mid-handicap golfers no longer need to pay premium prices to play a premium performance golf ball, thanks to the Maxfli Tour and Tour X.

Sure, the Pro V1 & Pro V1x have earned their place as the unofficial gold standard of premium golf balls, but the budget-friendly alternatives from Maxfli, the Tour and Tour X, are proof you can harness top-end performance without the nauseating price.

We took both of these Maxfli models out for a spin to compare how they performed against each other, and the competition. Here’s our complete review of the Maxfli Tour and Tour X golf balls.

Spoiler Alert: Maxfli Tour & Tour X Final Verdict

Maxfli’s premium offerings are really impressive. The biggest takeaway from our testing was the control around the greens, but we were also impressed with the distance off the tee, and everything in between. We also found these balls to be highly durable.

Mid and low-handicap golfers with swing speeds of 95+ mph who want distance off the tee, like to shape shots, and need a ball that’s crafty around the greens, but are tired of spending $50 or more on a dozen balls, should give these a try.

Maxfli Tour and Tour X Overview

$40 | SHOP NOW

Before we detail how the Tour and Tour X performed in our testing, let’s take a look at how the two balls compare to each other, the pros and cons, and which option is likely the better fit for you.

Maxfli Tour & Tour X Golf Balls

  • DESCRIPTION Maxfli Tour & Tour X Golf Balls
  • PERMISSION Maxfli Tour & Tour X Golf Balls

Maxfli Tour and Tour X Specs

While both balls are urethane-covered, higher compression balls, there are some subtle differences between the Maxfli Tour and Tour X. Most notably, the Tour X is a four-piece ball, while the Tour is 3-pieces. The X also has a slightly higher compression, which helps it reach higher top-end distance.

Tour & Tour X Pros & Cons

Given the price and performance, there’s a lot to love about the Tour and Tour X balls from Maxfli, but like any ball, they’re not for every golfer.

The better control you have over your shot shape and trajectory, the better this ball fits your game. Golfers who sometimes struggle with a hook or slice may find these balls to be unforgiving and would benefit more from a ball that prioritizes straight flight over spin.

RELATED: The Straightest Golf Balls to Cure Your Slice or Hook

Similarly, the higher compression ratings of these balls mean they’re best for players with faster swing speeds. Players with slower swing speeds (even low-handicappers) may see better performance from a softer, lower-compression ball. Low handicappers who don’t swing fast enough to reap the performance of these balls should consider the Maxfli Tour S, the lower-compression sibling to the Tour and Tour X.

  • Excellent greenside spin and control
  • Premium-level distance
  • Urethane cover
  • One of, if not the best value premium ball of 2023
  • On the firm end; Players who need a softer ball should consider Maxfli Tour S
  • While workable, not forgiving to golfers who hook or slice

Which Golfers Should Play the Maxfli Tour?

Maxfli Tour

The Maxfli Tour golf ball in gloss white

  • DESCRIPTION Maxfli Tour golf ball

The Maxfli Tour best fits mid-to-low handicap golfers who swing driver 95 mph or faster, and prioritize greenside feel and control. They either like a penetrating ball flight, or want a ball that will help lower their existing ball flight. Distance is important, but it doesn’t trump short-game control.

Which Golfers Should Play the Maxfli Tour X?

Maxfli Tour X golf ball

The Maxfli Tour X golf b all in gloss white

  • DESCRIPTION Maxfli Tour X golf ball

Like the Tour, the Maxfli Tour X is a great ball for mid-to-low handicap players with moderate to fast swing speeds, 95 mph or above with a driver.

However, players who prioritize maximum distance over greenside feel, and either prefer a higher ball flight, or need a ball that will help them launch it a little higher, fit better into the Tour X than the Tour.

Maxfli Tour vs. Tour X

We compared the Maxfli Tour and Tour X with some serious testing at the practice green and on the course. Here’s how they stacked up.

Off the Tee

Off the tee, the Tour X churned out higher top-end distance, but both balls rewarded well-struck drives with satisfying distance.

Both balls performed exactly how you’d expect a premium ball to perform in the approach game. Both held greens with ease off irons and wedges. Distances in the approach game were consistent with other balls in the class, and as premium balls, both the Tour and Tour X are easy to shape and flight however you desire.

The Tour X launched just a touch higher than the Tour, which made those flushed mid-iron shots even more satisfying, which is why we gave the edge in this category to the Tour X.

However, players who prefer a penetrating flight, or already hit the ball high, perhaps too high, should favor the Tour in this category.

We were particularly impressed with the Tour and Tour X around the greens. Both balls were easy to control from greenside chips, making the two-hop-and-stop chip shot look easy.

Comparing the two, the Tour had the edge over the Tour X in greenside control. It launched just a touch lower on chip shots and stopped a little quicker, making it easier to control. The Tour X still performed exceptionally, but the point goes to the Tour.

Even though the Tour X technically won more categories than the Tour, the thrill of hitting creative chips and pitches around the green with the Tour outweighed a couple yards off the tee or a slightly higher launch window from the Tour X, so we gave the overall nod to the Tour.

Even at the one-box price of $40 per dozen, the Tour and Tour X are more than a 20% savings over the Pro V line. When you buy in bulk, you save even more. Two dozen balls cost $35 per dozen, and if you buy four boxes at a time, they’re just $30 per dozen, which is getting close to half the price of the $53 per dozen Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

Find Which Model is Best for You

Every golfer is different, and every player has different demands from their ball than others. Golfers may even experience different results than we did with their own swings and impact conditions.

With that said, and given the affordability of these balls, we strongly recommend any low-to-mid handicap golfer on the market for a budget-friendly, premium ball to do their own testing and comparison between the two to find which one best suits their game.

Key technology Even more stability than Tour S comes from the TPU PowerPlate outsole, which houses nine Launch Pods positioned wider with cleats at the edges for perimeter stability. - Additional support comes from the PowerStrap across the midfoot. This is assisted by reinforced lacing eyelets, allowing you to pull your laces tighter for a more snug and secure fit. - An Ortholite Impressions FitBed features two layers to provide energy return and gradually mould to the shape of your foot over time.

GM Verdict You may have seen me wearing a new FootJoy shoe in videos over the last couple of months. You've now no doubt twigged that it was the Tour X, FootJoy's latest cleated performance shoe. The reason you'll have seen me wearing it a lot is because I like it, a lot.

The Tour S was an impressive shoe but coming in at over £200 initially, golfers were reluctant to experience the benefits of the stability it offered. Tour X takes care of any shortfalls of Tour S, including the price, by being more comfortable and looking more modern.

fj-tour-x-outdoor-web

It is arguably FootJoy’s most complete, cleated performance golf shoe. It has the lateral stability golfers need to create a solid base and a strong connection with the ground in abundance. It allowed us to swing with power and control and no fear of unwanted movement or slipping, regardless of the conditions.

tour-x-testing-2-web

Yet underfoot, it has a similarly soft, bouncy feel of Fury, which you certainly notice when walking between shots. The tongue is also softer, thicker and fits much better on the top of your foot, helped by the elasticated strap adding flexibility.

footjoy-tour-x-testing-web

FootJoy has really nailed the look too, striking that perfect balance of having lots of technology on show, notably the PowerStrap that provides great midfoot support, and colour pops to catch your eye without overdoing it. Tour X looks more premium and cutting edge than Tour S, in our opinion.

The colour choices are somewhat limited, but the neutral main colours help to match Tour X to multiple outfits. The clean, white toe section is pleasing to look down on and the see-through Launch Pods are certainly less noticeable.

Download media, fit for all – tour360 22 introduces new era of fit and traction.

  • 24-JAN-2022

tour de x fit x

17 years ago, we introduced the TOUR360 to the world. At the time, we purposefully took a lot of risks when it came to design because we wanted to challenge conventional thinking on what a premium performance shoe could represent. That first model ushered-in an era for what has now become our flagship footwear franchise worn by major champions and amateurs all around the world. Today we’re introducing the next chapter: TOUR360 22.

After nearly two decades of building upon and improving that original model of the TOUR360, we went back to the beginning; adopting that same mindset of taking risks that ultimately drove the creation for that first model. With the TOUR360 22, our primary focus was to re-examine how we addressed two critical areas that are important for golfers of all skill levels: fit and traction.

To get there, we looked at historical models of the TOUR360 as well as our own brand archives from other categories for inspiration. We landed on a recipe of key features that makes this our best-performing TOUR360 to date. From the ground up, the TOUR360 22 sits on our Feet You Wear™ last, serving as the foundation for our NEW TOUR360 FIT , while our new direct-injected SPIKEMORE traction system will help golfers stay locked-in and increase confidence with every swing. It’s the first time in golf that we’ve included these features.

“The TOUR360 is synonymous with pinnacle technology and premium materials, and we remained true to that throughout the design process of this new model,” said Masun Denison, global footwear director, adidas Golf. “Golfers will instantly notice a more natural fit that offers better stability, better traction and amazing comfort. I’ve been a part of the creation of every model of the TOUR360, so I can confidently say that this is our best-performing model we have ever introduced.”

With so much lateral movement and weight transfer in the golf swing, we were intrigued with the use-cases that our brand’s Feet You Wear last had to offer. We first introduced Feet You Wear in 1996. The design mimics the natural shape of the foot, ultimately helping to create a better connection with the ground and accommodate the natural movements of the foot in all directions. Knowing how important the ground is in the golf swing, an added benefit of using the Feet You Wear last helps golfers utilize this connection with the ground to generate power more easily in the swing. The design truly hugs and cradles the natural contours of the foot to optimize performance.

The Feet You Wear last is just one component of our NEW TOUR360 FIT that we’re introducing with TOUR360 22. The NEW TOUR360 FIT includes:

  • DUALSTACK Midsole – We combined the comfort of our full-length BOOST cushioning with an EVA stability frame. This EVA stability frame is a horseshoe-shaped piece that surrounds our full-length BOOST with EVA chassis, strategically placed on the perimeter of the forefoot to provide golfers with lightweight stability, comfort and performance. It’s our most technical and advanced midsole that we have ever offered. The benefits are not easily seen, but certainly felt.
  • GEOFIT Collar Pad – Designed to enhance the fit and feel on the top of the foot, this piece gently conforms to the individual to provide a more personalized and comfortable fit.
  • 3D TORSION™ SYSTEM – Targeted stability in the midfoot, this mold plate enhances the connection with the ground while also helping to stabilize footwork throughout the swing.
  • INSITE Sockliner - Working in tandem with the Feet You Wear last, this sockliner cradles the contours of the foot, especially in the heel, to provide enhanced cushioning, comfort, and support.

We didn’t stop there. We’re introducing our latest iteration of SPIKEMORE with the TOUR360 22 that features cleats directly injected onto the TPU base. We found that by injecting the cleats, we could provide more precise locations that would allow us to adjust density, make the inside and outside arm shapes unique and adjust the size depending on where the cleat sits on the outsole. Each cleat also includes a center cone, which helps to improve overall grip. While larger than our spikes of the past, this new configuration and variance in size helps to disperse weight and promote increased green friendliness.

As part of our effort to improve fit, we collaborated with the team at BOA® Technology to elevate both the fit and performance for the BOA models of the TOUR360 22. We worked with their team at the BOA Fit Performance Lab to find a way to optimize both fit and function. The PerformFit Wrap™ system we created consists of two overlapping panels that pull down over the top of the instep. The BOA Fit System, featuring the micro-adjustable Li2 dial wraps around the heel, locking the foot into place while providing customized fit. The BOA model also features a sockfit construction, designed to give golfers ultimate support, stability, and confidence.

From adidas athlete Xander Schauffele:

“I got to see first-hand how much detail went into bringing this shoe to life and that was a really unique learning experience. Footwear is so important in the golf swing, but it can also help boost confidence. After spending quite a bit of time testing the TOUR360 22, I know golfers will feel a higher level of stability, traction and comfort, which are things we all need from our footwear out on the course so that we can perform our best.”

From adidas athlete Dustin Johnson:

“I’ve worn almost every model of TOUR360 since I started my career and I’m always amazed at how the footwear team continues to raise the bar year after year. I really like the design and style with this new model, but the traction, feel and comfort I get definitely make this the best version of the TOUR360 that I’ve ever worn.”

From adidas athlete Danielle Kang:

“The TOUR360 22 is packed with so much innovation and technology that I could feel the difference the minute I put them on. What impressed me the most was how meticulous the team was throughout the design process, and I think the final product is a testament to adidas’ commitment to never stop striving for better. I’m really excited to perform in it this season.”

The TOUR360 22 continues to include the best materials for enhanced durability, but now with even more purpose. The upper features premium rich leather (one-year waterproof warranty), microfiber, and textiles that incorporate recycled materials, all part of our mission as a brand to help END PLASTIC WASTE.

TOUR360 is our most iconic franchise and we’ve taken it to new heights for all athletes. The TOUR360 22 will be offered in five models: both laced and BOA models for men and women, and a simplified lace model for junior golfers.

The laced models of the TOUR360 22 will be available at adidas.com , the adidas app, and at select retailers worldwide beginning January 28. The BOA models will be available shortly thereafter, beginning March 1.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe Review

George Stead

When FootJoy brings out a new golf shoe that players like Justin Thomas, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Kevin Kisner have already made the switch into for the 2020 season, the chances are, it's going to be pretty damn good.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

The makers of the #1 shoe in golf is also labelling the Tour X as their latest best-in-class shoe. What that means basically is that FootJoy are saying if you're looking for a high performing, premium golf shoe in 2020 - look no further than the Tour X. Time to see whether this shoe really does have the talent to live up to it's X factor billing.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

What's It All About?

What FootJoy has done to produce the Tour X is simple and something you will see a lot of golf manufacturers doing whilst searching for product perfection over a long period of time. They have taken the best bits of three different FJ products and rolled them into one all swinging , all dancing super-shoe.

The three previous models in question that FootJoy have taken from to produce the Tour X are the Fury , the Tour-S and the DNA Helix . All brilliant golf shoes in their own right, all with some great bits of tech in.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

From the aforementioned models, the following bits of tech have been taken and combined to create the Tour X. From the DNA, the ChromoSkin soft leather upper and 3D foam collar and tongue comes in, from the Tour-S the powerplate outsole and integrated powerstrap offer what FootJoy call motion control around the foot, and from last year's Fury the ortholite impressions fit bed sits underneath the foot to offer unparalleled comfort.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

All in all, the Tour X is designed to suit the golfer who seeks maximum stability during the golf swing; avid golfers with fast swing speeds who really like to load up and give the ball a crack. Let's find out whether the Tour X provides this.

FootJoy Says...

“Feedback from tour and consumers told us that they loved the unmatched stability from the PowerPlate outsole and Powerstrap of Tour-S but craved soft supple leather they experienced in DNA and the underfoot comfort in Fury. So, we combined all three and turbo-charged it with the latest technology to create the ultimate hybrid performance shoe. And Tour X was born.”

Richard Fryer, Director of Footwear Product Management.

Given the time of year, testing these golf shoes in the UK in December meant that they were going to be put through their paces, properly.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

I played the usual 18 holes of golf on the wettest of winter days. I played the front nine in the rain and the back nine in fog. The course was wet, conditions were tough and temperatures were low. Basically, the kind of day where if you don't have the right golf shoes - you're in for a shocker. I bet FootJoy didn't have Justin Thomas test these shoes in these kind of conditions...

👀 @JustinThomas34 ’s new 👟 pic.twitter.com/XbohR8KFAq — FootJoy (@FootJoy) December 28, 2019

Given the claims from FootJoy, the first thing to look at here is the stability of the Tour X, which I have to say was brilliant. The new powerplate outsole gave me an extremely solid base on which to make every golf swing. Whether this was on a tee, a wet fairway or in a bunker, the Tour X shoes performed. I didn't slip once during my testing, which seems like a given but trust me, it's not.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

FootJoy have achieved this kind of outstanding stability through 9 launch pods on the outsole - four on the heel and five on the main part of the foot. These launch pods provide a serious amount of surface coverage for both shoes - especially in the heel where the launch pods protrude out from the shoe to provide that extra width.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Aesthetically I think the outsole of the Tour X shoe is very striking too. With a contrast between neon green SoftSpikes and translucent white SoftSpikes, a bold Tour X graphic between also gives the shoes some serious on-course appeal.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

The main design feature of the Tour X is the FJ powerstrap. First seen in 2018's Tour-S , FJ has updated it slightly for 2020.

In the Tour X, the TPU powerstrap now features a strip of carbon fibre down it's centre. Said to give more stability and control in the midfoot than ever before, the powerstrap was and is still a great innovation to golf footwear. Whether the new carbon fibre strip and slight redesign makes too much of a difference is very hard to say. If anything, at least it makes you look the part.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

As to be expected from a waterproof golf shoe priced at £179.99, the upper of the Tour X is made from premium chromoskin leather by Pittards (a premium, performance leather maker based in Somerset, UK). This makes the upper of the shoe three things: super-soft to touch, supple in the swing, and waterproof thanks to the chromoskin.

During my test, my feet remained comfortable and dry from start to finish. There is no doubting that these shoes are 100% waterproof. Even when searching for the odd ball in thick wet heather, my feet remained dry.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Reviewing the Fury shoes this time last year, I was amazed at the comfort FJ's new ortholite impressions fit bed provided. They were some of the comfiest shoes I had ever worn. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars overall is because I couldn't quite get on with them aesthetically.

With the Tour X, FJ have ticked both boxes in my opinion. Comfort-wise you get everything you'd want. Out of the box, I played in the shoes and didn't think once about any blistering or niggles. They were extremely comfy. I think the 3D molded collar in the heel of the shoe has a lot to do with this - it feels great on your feet.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

One of my favourite features was the Tour-Spec stretch tongue. This in English means that the tongue of the Tour X is split into two parts, joined by some elastic in the centre. This gives you the ability to manipulate the tongue exactly where you want it underneath the laces for maximum comfort on the bridge of your foot.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Looks-wise FJ seem to have taken things a little back to basics with the Tour-X having a clean, uncluttered modern design. From above the toe of the shoe reminds me of the classic FootJoy Pro/SL 's sleek, yet substantial shape. They are similar to the Tour-S shoes , with some subtle yet effective changes that make all the difference.

When receiving these shoes, I was told by FootJoy that 2020 will see them unveil their best ever shoe lineup. After testing the first model in that shoe lineup, I have to say they've started very well.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Another thing to mention also is the drop in price of the Tour X. Although £179.99 is a lot of money for a pair of golf shoes, the Tour-S shoes came in an eye-watering £240 RRP. In doing this, unfortunately FootJoy priced out many golfers who would simply not pay that much. Now however, you can get a shoe that is £60 cheaper, performs just as well, and looks even better. Bargain.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Would I Use It?

Yes, if I were to play golf tomorrow, the FootJoy Tour X would be my shoe of choice and I don't expect that to change too much throughout the course of 2020. Great golf shoe.

FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe

Wide footbed and launch pods provide unbelievable traction

Tour-spec stretch tongue is brilliant

Powerstrap genuinely makes foot feel solid in the swing

I have loved playing the Chrome Soft X ever since Ping's Ballnamic ball fitting tool recommended it to me.  I would love to hear any experiences anyone has had comparing the Chrome Soft X with the new Chrome Tour X.

You might find the CTX to be marginally faster off long clubs and to spin marginally more on shots around the green, but apart from that the switch from CSX to CTX should be very seamless for you. The directive from Callaway staff players using CSX was "don't you dare mess with this because it's already perfect", while Chrome Tour is much changed from the CSXLS that it replaces.

That's good news.  Kudos to Callaway players for giving that strong input.

Am I to understand new Chrome Tour ball is an offshoot from CSX LS ball?  I have a few of the latter, don't like how they feel, compared to my regular ball, Dash -ProV1x.

Yeah Pepper, a softer feeling LS with better green side spin.  But, CT is not "soft" just softer than LS

Interesting.

My chart says

Dash -ProV1x is 102 compression, and extra firm, and my standard ProV1x is 97+, extra firm.

Chrome Soft LS is 100 compression and extra firm.

Chrome Soft X is 95 and firm.

Interesting.  ProV1 is 87-90 compression, and soft.

Basically CT ball feels like the old X ball but reacts more like between old Chrome Soft but spins around the greens like the CSX. I think Callaway should have released 1 more option just like Titleist should have. A Ball that plays like the old PROV1X 13 and 15 balls. High launch less spin, firm but not as firm as the left dash. When Titleist switched the PROV and PROV X balls I have been lost ever since. The closest I got was the Chrome Soft X LS ball. Now I am back to drawing board... Bridgestone BX not enough spin on long irons but I like everything else, ProV ball to soft feel wise, low launch and knuckly on long irons, PROV 1 X too high launch and way too much spin on all full wedge shots, and on and on... Srixons have way too many issues with the "seam" for me, Taylormade balls quaility control issues. Basically I want the Chrome Tour ball that has firmer compression but does not feel like a Left dash.

The new TP5X fits your description nicely.  Not sure of durability yet, but had no problem gaming a single ball for 18 holes.  I did this twice and the ball was fine.   Have you tested CTX? It was slightly faster than CSX and saw this on the course.   IMO it has low long game spin and wedge spin may be a hair less than ProV1X

Tour de France 2022 Review

Neil Watton

I’ve been playing the Tour de France games for the best part of a decade . A huge fan of both gaming and cycling, it’s an annual franchise that just about manages to get the legs pumping, before coming to a halt, forgetting to unclip and falling to the ground.

See, for all the promise that a new Tour de France game brings, for the most part a copy and paste job gets delivered the way of the gaming community, with very little ever added or built upon.

Unfortunately that’s pretty much the case yet again for Tour de France 2022 . In fact, if you’ve played any TDF game from the last eight years, and especially the last couple, you’ll struggle to find too much that is different here.

tour de france 2022 review 1

Of course, the latest route of the most anticipated of French bike races is in place, and the twenty-one stages of the Tour de France 2022 are playable. Each stage seems well created too, taking you through the real-world locations as has been decided for this year’s route. It’s strange that the overall distance calculations are somewhat amiss though, with each segment of the virtual Tour never quite capable of matching the exact distances the Pro Tour riders will cover. It’s a weird little oddity that has afflicted the Tour de France games for some time, and I’m not really sure why Nacon and Cyanide Studios cannot get that basic element right. I’m all for shortening things to allow for a more fun gaming experience, but when you’re knocking just a few kilometres off of a 200km race, it just doesn’t make sense.

Aside from that, we’ve got some set-up videos which accompany the build up to each stage and these are nice for the few seconds that they play out. It’s similar in terms of the directeur sportif briefings and inclusion of some factoids from the commentator, but even with the decently high level of detail being spouted out, once in a race you’ll struggle to ever really pick out one stage from the next.

The latest teams and riders are in place as well, or at least little thumbnail images that represent those riders who are most likely going to feature. With the full team line-ups only ever decided a week or so ahead of the Tour rolling out, it’s a tricky job for the development teams, but they have done a decent one in getting the biggest names included this time around – you’ll find Roglic, Pogacar, Yates and Quintana all leading their teams. If you’re really that fussed about missing names, altering the line-ups as you see fit is doable. You can even fit Cav in then, all in hope of saving TDF 22.

tour de france 2022 review 2

Not that it really matters one iota because once again, when you are in a race, things come across as a bit of a letdown. The control scheme is exactly the same as before – a hold of a trigger to pedal, a mash of a button to sprint and a hold of another to down an energy gel or two as you get tired. From there, the best gaming plans will see you moving into in-race menus, switching your way through the team, picking out the best rider at any set point, whilst fast forwarding through the rest of the stage until the final sprint. It’s something that the TDF games have urged players to do for a while, and there is no difference here.

Repetition is felt in the visuals too, especially those utilised for bike models and rider characters; they are full-on cookie cut from the likes of Tour de France 2021 , with the same generic looking lycra luvvy found frequenting start lines and podium procedures. I fully understand cycling is a bit niche sport – especially in video game terms – but would it be that difficult to craft a few different styles of rider, or at the very least some different facial looks or change in rider size. That would go down a treat.

It’s a similar issue with the bikes that these guys ride – and they are all guys as not a single girl gets anywhere near Tour de France 2022. To the layperson, one bike may look like the next, but to a cycling enthusiast, that’s like saying a Ford Focus looks like a BMW, which in turn looks like a Rolls Royce or Lamborghini. Those creating Tour de France 2022 have seemingly just slapped some different colours and wordings onto a generic bike frame, crossing their fingers in hope that no one would notice. Unfortunately, we do and again it kills the immersion.

That repetition and lack of immersion is something which is pretty much the case across the board in TDF 22 in fact. Audio is limited but again highlighted by the same old menu music and simple “Allez” calls from the cookie cut crowd, whilst those menus themselves have been ripped, near identically, from games of the past. I guess navigation of a few square boxes is a simple task, but would it be too much to ask for an injection of joy into this cycling flagbearer?

tour de france 2022 review 3

So is anything actually new? Well, there’s the much vaunted Race of the Moment, which promises to throw the player into some of the finest moments in cycling, taking part in limited time competitions. The problem is, it’s extremely limited to specific times and days, and so there’s a chance that you’ll blink and miss it. Waiting days for it to roll around again just in order to play a specific game mode is something we shouldn’t have to do.

There is also the addition of falls, injuries and illness included in Tour de France 2022, and finally you’ll find that your rider is actually capable of ditching his bike and being left to gain a few friction burns. Or at least that’s what we hoped would be possible, but again, in reality it’s all a bit half-arsed. See, switch on the falls – and injuries and the like – before you head into the race of your liking and you’d expect these to pop up frequently, especially as you can set their occurrence levels. But we’ve struggled to find any real difference in how races play out and any crashes we’d expect to see are non-existent. In fact, yet again (and I fully understand I’m constantly going back over and over again here, but it’s what Cyanide and Nacon have done, so I will too), but your rider can morph into other riders without falling off, can ride through the crowd without having to dodge an ‘Allez, Opi-Omi’ sign, and into barriers without a care in the world. The worst that is ever going to happen is that they come to a bit of a stop, lose a few places and then get going again. At least that’s how it’s played out in our time with Tour de France 2022.

It’s safe to say that, for about the eighth year running, I’ve been left wanting by what has been delivered in Tour de France 2022. It’s obviously nice to be able to replicate the real world Tour, but aside from that, you’ll mostly find yourself skipping races at super speed – something which has always been encouraged by the commentators and developers – just popping back to the real racing as the final few kilometres of a 300km race look to play out; mashing your sprint button in hope of making it to the end. Perhaps that’s a cycling issue, as even the most hardened bike racing fan would struggle to sit through the race lengths that we are accustomed to, but it does always feel a bit cheap in gaming terms to hit that fast forward button.

tour de france 2022 review 4

Of course, anyone looking for more could go deeper into the racing world with the Pro Team and Pro Rider options which are included, but again, a quick flick of CTRL-C and CTRL-V, will mean you’ll know what to expect from those – manage a team to glory in Pro Team or take a rider from season to season in Pro Leader. It’s fun, but there’s nothing special here.

On a personal level it’s the Race options which are most appealing, and then only really as side dishes to the main Tour. We’ll never get bored of hitting the cobbles of Paris–Roubaix, and Liège–Bastogne–Liège is obviously well worth a spin around. We’re also a little partial to the multi-stage Critérium du Dauphiné, and to the well ridden route of Paris-Nice. When you include a few other one-dayers like those of Giro di Como, Imola, Dusseldorf and the Primavera Classic, as well as the Euro Tour, an Open Tour and the Breizh Cup and there’s certainly a fair old whack of races in place. It’s a shame that you’ll rarely ever be able to appreciate – or care for – the differences between them.

There’s definitely a market for a decent bike racing game, particularly one that focuses all efforts on the grandest of Grand Tours. But once again Tour de France – The Video Game isn’t that game. Unfortunately, until the current zero level of competition tries to raise the bar, we may well only be able to look forward to another annual release which is consistently minimal in terms of change.

Here’s to Tour de France 2023 then. Perhaps that will be the year we get a fully fledged cycling game that will let us fulfil our lycra clad needs and do full justice to the greatest bike race of them all. Because one thing is for certain, Tour de France 2022 is left spinning up the steepest climb as the enthusiasm and energy fast drains away.

706 people named Kyle got together in Texas

KYLE, Texas (AP) — How many people named Kyle can fit in one place? For one Texas city, not enough.

Another attempt by the city of Kyle, Texas, to break the world record for the largest gathering of people with one name fell short Saturday despite 706 Kyles of all ages turning up at a park in the suburbs of Austin.

The crown is currently held by a town in Bosnia that got 2,325 people named Ivan together in 2017, according to Guinness World Records.

It’s not the first time the Kyles have come gunning for the Ivans. Last year, the official count at what has become known as the Gathering of the Kyles clocked in at 1,490 in the fast-growing Texas city that is about 37 miles south of Austin, the state’s capital.

Kyle is not a chart-topper among popular names in the U.S., according to the Social Security Administration, which annually tracks the names given to girls and boys in each state. The most recent data showed Kyle ranked 416th among male names in 2023.

By comparison, Ivan ranked 153.

Photo of Jordan Campbell

Today Nacon and Cyanide announced that Tour De France 2022 will be launching on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on 9th June 2022. Celebrating the biggest cycling event in the world with a vast array of improvements and a new game mode, the title returns with14,000km of racing across four different countries. Players can enjoy four game modes and manage 26 teams. The world’s top cyclists, such as Tadej Pogačar, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Primož Roglič and David Gaudu, are available to race with players in the game’s 92 cycling stages. More information on modes and features can be found below. As part of this announcement, Pro Cycling Manager was revealed for PC only, more on this can be found on the official steam page .

  • New game mode:   Tour de France 2022  introduces the all-new Race of the Moment mode, in which players can compare their results online with others in ranked weekly challenges.
  • The new official course of the 2022  Tour de France :  like previous years, players can race around France, this year starting from Denmark. All 21 official new stages are in the game, including the time trial in Copenhagen to start, then Lille Métropole – Arenberg Porte du Hainaut and its cobbled sections, the iconic Hautacam climb in the 18th stage, and the final flat stage on the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysées in Paris.
  • More varied racing situations:  the game’s artificial intelligence now offers a wider range of behaviours, which are better tailored to races and events. Players will experience early breakaways more often and enjoy better collaboration in breakaways.
  • New classic inspired by a famous Italian race:  the Primavera Classic.
  • New playable teams:  Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA and Uno-X Pro Cycling Team join the game for the first time.
  • Race incidents:  players now have the option to enable or disable falls and illnesses as well as set the frequency when enabled.  The consequences vary depending on the severity of the incident.
  • Race preparation:  this new system randomly selects five cyclists to be well prepared and five others who could potentially underperform. This encourages players to keep a close eye on their competitors as well as their own team.
  • More immersive cobbled sections:  when racing on these difficult sections, the user interface shudders, just like cyclists experience in real life. Players have never experienced the Arenberg trench like this before.
