How to get to Liverpool from London

Liverpool is about 220 miles or 355 kilometers from London. While you can drive, by far the best way to get to Liverpool from London is by train . You can find all the practical information for your journey below.

By train

The best and easiest way to travel to Liverpool from London is by train. A direct train from London’s Euston rail station to Liverpool Lime Street station takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The train makes several stops on the route but you do not have to change trains. The journey is quick, relaxing, and comfortable.

Direct trains from Euston Station run once an hour. There are also indirect trains more frequently, but the journey takes longer, so it’s not something to even consider for a day trip. Here you can see train schedules and get tickets .

TIP: For a Liverpool day trip from London, we recommend that you take a train at around 7 am. This will allow you to make the most of your day. !!! The day tour from London to Liverpool that we mentioned above already includes a train ticket with departure at around this time.

Good to know: If you book your own train tickets, you should know that the cheapest rail tickets are released about 12 weeks in advance so book your tickets as early as you can. This is particularly important as you will need to depart London at peak travel times to ensure a full day in Liverpool. Peak travel times are before 9.30 am on weekdays. The train will be busier and tickets are usually more expensive.

Check Nationalrail.co.uk or Avanti West Coast for the tickets and shop around since they may differ. We recommend checking this website for the best deals.

Good to know: Children under 5 years are free on English trains but they are not guaranteed a seat unless you pay for one.

TIP: If you are traveling as a family, it may prove more cost-effective to buy and download a digital Family and Friends Railcard. This card costs £30 for one year and gives discounted rail travel for up to four adults (33% off) and four children aged 5-15 (60% off). This might not make sense for just one train journey, but can be of great value if you are planning more train trips in the UK.

Express train at Liverpool Lime Street Station

London to Liverpool drive time is 4 hours 15 minutes without stops or traffic delays. It is a 220-mile / 355-kilometer journey. You will need to take a break on route so you need to allocate at least five hours for a one-way trip.

Plus, most of the route is on major motorways so it is not a scenic journey. You will also need to find parking once you arrive and pay parking fees. So we do not recommend driving to Liverpool from London, and definitely not if you just have a day or two.

With a rail tour

As already mentioned before, you can also book a day tour from London to Liverpool . There are several options and none of them is an actual organized tour. Instead, you receive train tickets, the Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool is prebooked for you, and you also get other tickets and information to help you plan a perfect visit on your own.

The best option for this trip at the moment is this highly-rated tour . It takes away lots of guesswork and preparation.

TIP: No matter how you book your train tickets, read below on how to actually plan your time once you get to Liverpool.

London to Liverpool day trip itinerary

Below, you can find all the details, practical information, and useful tips on what to see and how to plan your day in Liverpool.

Early morning: arrive in Liverpool & walk to Albert Dock

Catch the 07.07 am train from London Euston to Liverpool. This train arrives at Liverpool Lime Street Station around 9.20 am.

Follow the signs to the Royal Albert Dock which is just 1 mile away, about 20 minutes on foot.

You could also shorten the walk by catching the Merseyrail from Liverpool Lime Street for two stops to James Street. From here, it is a shorter 10-minute walk to the Royal Albert Dock. But by the time you figure out where to be, you’ll likely be halfway already. So we recommend simply walking.

Follow the signs to The Beatles Story, the first stop on your Liverpool day trip itinerary. You will walk past the historic Salthouse Dock before reaching Albert Dock where The Beatles Story is located. Salthouse Dock is the oldest dock in Liverpool. Its walls are Grade II listed and parts of it date back to the mid-18th century.

TIP: If you feel like stopping for a cup of coffee or a quick late breakfast, you’ll find a few cafes at the docks. A good option right along your way is Rubens Coffee Albert Dock, which is open daily from 8.30 am. However, it would be better to eat on the train or take some coffee to go upon arrival in Liverpool and head straight to The Beatles Story.

Liverpool Lime Street Station

The Beatles Story

The largest Beatles museum in the world, The Beatles Story is one of the must-sees in Liverpool . It charts the history of The Beatles from their formation to their breakup. The stories, history, and music of The Beatles come alive through artifacts such as clothes, letters, song lyrics, stage outfits, and instruments.

You can also see recreations of the famous Abbey Road recording studios and a mock-up of the original Cavern Club stage. Kids will get the most fun out of the interactive Discovery Zone.

Good to know: The Beatles Story is a self-guided tour so you can stay as long or as little as you like. Audio commentaries are available in many different languages.  Count around 1.5 hours for a visit.

TIP: The Beatles Story is one of the most popular attractions in Liverpool, so expect it to be busy. Ideally, you come here first thing in the morning, which should help you to avoid the biggest crowds.

Practical information: The Beatles Story is open daily except on the 25-26 of December. You can get timed skip-the-line tickets here . For this itinerary, it’s probably best to book tickets at around or a bit after 10 am.

The Beatles Story in Liverpool, UK

Lunch at The Royal Albert Dock

Spend lunchtime wandering the colorful, lively Royal Albert Docks which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A good option for lunch is the Peaberry Coffee House . It has a wide-ranging menu including a good-value kids menu. Breakfast is served until 12.30 pm when the lunch menu starts. Pre-booking is recommended.

For something a little different, try The Smugglers Cove . This pirate-themed pub has a two-course menu for kids and an extensive menu for adults. It also offers a traditional roast dinner on Sundays.

Both of these restaurants are just next to The Beatles Story, and you’ll find plenty of other choices in the area. Keep in mind, however, that going for lunch at a restaurant will take up a lot of your precious time.

TIP: If the weather’s nice, you can also pick up a takeaway lunch from any of the cafes or street food stands on the Docks. Enjoy a picnic on the grass or on a bench on the waterfront. This is a great spot to people watch, enjoy street performances, or watch the ferries on the Mersey.

With some extra time to spare, you could pop into Tate Liverpool or Maritime Museum (both free to enter). There are also a couple of short attractions that are ideal for kids including a Victorian-era carousel and riding the Wheel of Liverpool.

However, with just a day in Liverpool, you’ll probably have a pretty tight itinerary, so we recommend concentrating on the main places and activities that you really want to see and do.

Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool

Since you only have one day in Liverpool, you’ll have to make some tough choices on how to spend your afternoon in the city. Below, we highlight two of the best options for your first visit – one for The Beatles fans, and one for those who want to see more of Liverpool.

And no, you really can’t see ‘everything’ on a day trip to Liverpool. But the good news is that both options are really nice and so you really can’t go wrong with either. Take a look!

Option 1: Beatles Magical Mystery Tour

Take the Magical Mystery Bus Tour , a popular Beatles-themed tour that visits all the major Beatles landmarks in Liverpool. This is one of the most popular things to do for first-time visitors to Liverpool, and a must for The Beatles fans. It’s also the option that is included with the self-guided tours from London that we talked about earlier in this article.

Conveniently, the tour departs from The Royal Albert Dock , so it’s really easy to do with just a day in Liverpool. This will help to minimize your walking on your day trip to Liverpool. If you decide on this option, be sure to book the Magical Mystery Tour in advance . Depending on the season and availability, you could opt for a tour at 1 pm or at 2 pm.

Good to know: This is a 2-hour guided bus tour. You will get to see a lot of Liverpool as well as all the main Beatles landmarks. The coach makes brief stops at Geroge Harrison and Paul McCartney’s childhood homes, at Strawberry Fields, and at Penny Lane. Other locations (such as schools that The Beatles attended) are drive pasts.

The tour is led by a knowledgeable and entertaining guide and accompanied, of course, by music from the Fab Four. The tour culminates at the legendary Cavern Club.

TIP: Be sure to use a bathroom before you board the coach as it does not have toilet facilities.

PRO TIP: If you don’t like big-bus tours, you can also book a similar Beatles-themed tour by private taxi .

Penny Lane in Liverpool UK

Option 2: Liverpool waterfront and the River Mersey

If a visit to The Beatles Story in the morning is plenty of the Fab Four for you, you can opt for an alternative itinerary for the afternoon. In that case, focus on Liverpool’s historic waterfront, which has a lot to offer.

From the Royal Albert Dock, walk along the pedestrianized waterfront to the iconic Royal Liver Building (more info below). It is just a short walk of around 15 minutes.

On the way, you will pass Lovers Locks and several statues including ‘Billy Fury’ and ‘The Working Horse’. An evocative statue is ‘The Crossing’ (sometimes called ‘Legacy’) which depicts a young family emigrating to the United States. Liverpool was the departure point for thousands of families seeking a better life in the U.S.

TIP: The most visited statue on the waterfront is The Beatles statue at Pier Head . The lifelike bronze statues have captured The Beatles in their happier early years. Look out for the extraordinary details on the statues that hint at future life paths such as George Harrison’s Sanskrit belt.

The Beatles statue at Pier Head in Liverpool

Royal Liver Building 360

The Royal Liver Building dates back to the early 1900s and is a Grade-I listed building. Sitting on top of the building are the symbols of Liverpool, the famous Liver birds.

On the ground floor, you’ll find the Visitor Center (free to enter). Exhibitions inside detail how the building was constructed and its colorful history. In addition, we highly recommend the Royal Liver Building 360 experience.

This guided tour gives you access to the 10th and 15th floors where you can get a fantastic 360-degree view of Liverpool. There is also a newly opened audio-visual display in the clock tower.

Good to know: The full tour is not suitable for people with access difficulties. You can travel to the 10th floor by lift but from here, the 15th floor can only be accessed by stairs.

Practical information: If you want to go to the top, be sure to book the tickets for a specific time slot in advance . You will need to allocate 70 minutes for the guided tour. Count at least 1.5 hours for the overall visit.

Royal Liver Building 360 in Liverpool

River Mersey Cruise

After all the sightseeing, you can rest weary feet with a 50-minute sightseeing cruise on the River Mersey .

The cruise departs directly opposite the Liver Building at Pier Head. It travels a loop of the River so you can see both the Liverpool and Wirral skyline. The route travels as far as Dockers Clock and Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral. There’s also an audio commentary so you can learn about the buildings you are seeing as well as the city’s rich maritime past.

Practical Information: Ferries depart every hour on the hour. Pre-booking is advised. Arrive at the dock at least 15 minutes before your departure time.

Good to know: There is both indoor and outdoor seating available on the boat. We recommend dressing warmly and staying outside.

After your cruise, walk from Pier Head to The Cavern Club on Mathew St. It’s a short 10-minute walk.

Mersey Ferries cruise in Liverpool

Late afternoon: The Cavern Club

No matter which option you choose above, The Cavern Club will be the next stop on your itinerary. If you booked the Magical Mystery Tour , it ends here (and the entrance to the Cavern Club is included in your ticket). And if you opted for the second sightseeing option, you can easily walk here after your river cruise.

The Cavern Club is forever linked with The Beatles. It is where they launched their career. But the club still operates as a music venue today.

The club has a main stage for daily live music and a separate live lounge for special events. Live music is performed each day from 11.15 am. Beatles tribute bands also perform here. Check the lineup for the day of your visit here.

Practical Information: Unless you go with one of the tours where the standard entry to the club is included, you cannot pre-book The Cavern Club and have to pay at the door on entry. However, you can pre-book events in the live lounge . A ticket for the live lounge includes general admission to the rest of the club but not vice versa.

Good to know: Children are welcome in The Cavern Club but only until 8 pm.

TIP: Mathew Street where Cavern Club is located is home to some of Liverpool’s most popular statues. Be sure to visit the John Lennon and Cilla Black statues.

Early dinner

Before you leave from Liverpool back to London, you’ll likely want to have some dinner .

If you are looking for traditional British food , The Cavern Restaurant is a good option. It has a surprisingly affordable menu for such a popular location. Its restaurant sits two floors above the basement music venue and the menu has a wide range of options. The restaurant serves a traditional fish, mushy peas, and chip dinner. You can also try ‘Scouse’, a Liverpudlian dish made from stewed beef and vegetables.

A popular option nearby is Smoke & Dough . This is a highly rated restaurant in Liverpool ONE, just 5 minutes walk from The Cavern Club. If you order meat, it is cooked in front of you on a grill at your table. Kids will be mesmerized.

Another nice place for dinner is Lunya . This is a popular Catalonian tapas restaurant on Hanover Street, a 7-minute walk from The Cavern Club. They have an extensive menu that includes a street food section, and a very extensive kids’ menu. Plus, for the end of a long day of sightseeing, there is a long cocktail menu.

Evening – back to London

Return to Liverpool Lime Street Station to catch the train back to London Euston. The railway station is just about 0.5 miles, 10 minutes walk from the Cavern Club or the above-mentioned restaurants.

The direct trains to London leave once every hour and take around 2 hours and 15 minutes. The last direct train leaves at around 8.48 pm, although times vary.

Of course, you can also opt for an earlier train, but booking one of the latest direct trains would allow you to make the most of your day trip to Liverpool.

Tips for Visiting Liverpool from London

Here are some practical tips and info that you may want to know when planning a day trip to Liverpool:

  • Take a very early train from London and a late train back as it will give you a full day in Liverpool.  You can rest or catch up on sleep on the train. Also, arrive at the station well in advance – it can be overwhelming when busy.
  • Avoid traveling by train on a Monday or Friday morning. Also, tickets on a weekend usually cost more. Either way, get your tickets in advance.
  • Pick up a continental breakfast at London Euston or nearby before you board the train. This will save buying expensive food on the train. It will also save you time once you arrive in Liverpool. There are several cafes, supermarket outlets, and pastry shops on the Euston Station concourse. Some of them are open as early as 6 am.
  • Book in advance . This counts for all the attractions you want to visit and the tours you wish to take, but also restaurants (especially for dinner). It will save lots of queuing time, especially in peak season, AND you’ll be sure you can actually visit the places you want at the best time that fits your sightseeing itinerary.
  • You can use online maps, or download one to your phone before you arrive in Liverpool. This day trip to Liverpool itinerary minimizes walking, but it’s useful to have a map to guide you from one place to another.
  • Unless you want to be part of the action, avoid visiting Liverpool on football match days. Liverpool city center gets very busy when Liverpool or Everton host a home game. You can check the match schedules here. Similarly, the city is very busy when horse racing is on at the nearby Aintree Racecourse. The busiest day is on Grand National Day in early April.
  • Wear comfortable shoes . As with all city trips, you’ll be walking a lot, so be sure that your footwear is comfortable and your clothing is adapted to the ever-changing English weather.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

The Phil – as it’s fondly known by locals – is among the top things to see in Liverpool. This venue lies in the university quarter and offers jaw-dropping architecture and acoustics. There’s a nice bar there.

But the Philharmonic pub of the same name near the concert hall is really worth taking a short detour to. Its interior is renowned – and perhaps surprisingly the men’s toilets are the most impressive of all.

Once a school, this historic listed building is a centre for contemporary arts and dates back to the early 1700s. The central courtyard and cafe here are among the star attractions. An endless programme of exhibitions and events places this among the top Liverpool places to visit.

Many Liverpool residents are lucky enough to live in the various suburbs surrounding Sefton Park. It’s not far to venture from the city centre, and lots of local buses stop on the fringes. Among the 250 acres, don’t miss the Botanical Gardens and Victorian Palm House.

Anfield Football Stadium

For some, a Liverpool what to do list would in no way be complete without a visit to one of the city’s iconic football stadiums. Liverpool Football Club (LFC)’s Anfield stadium is arguably the biggest and best in the city (unless, perhaps, you’re an Everton fan). As well as all the sights inside, tickets include admission to The LFC Story.

Crosby Beach

Though Liverpool isn’t really known as a bucket-and-spade kind of coastal destination, it does actually have some lovely beaches outside the city centre.

Crosby Beach is the most worthwhile to visit, as it’s home to Another Place , a sculpture by acclaimed artist Antony Gormley (the man behind the Angel of the North ). With parking and train stations close by, it’s easy to reach Crosby from the city too.

Beatles Liverpool tour itinerary

The Beatles Story

Your morning in Liverpool

In the morning you are free to discover at your own pace and time. From the railway station it makes logistical sense to visit Mathew Street (Liverpool's Cavern Quarter) about 10 minutes walk from the railway station where you find The Beatles Shop and Matthew Street Gallery. Opposite is The Cavern Pub (opposite the Cavern Club).

Another 10-minute walk and you are at the Albert Dock, home of the The Beatles Story.

Matthew Street Gallery & Cavern Quarter

Mathew Street is a focal point in The Beatles history. It is home to the musical wall of fame and a tribute statue to John Lennon, focus of visitor’s selfies.

Here you will find the famous Cavern Club where it all started for the Beatles and also the Cavern Pub featuring memorabilia from past performances at The Cavern.

The Beatles Shop

The Beatles Shop features an original 1959 jukebox packed full of Beatles singles, and even a Beatles carpet! The shop boasts “The largest range of Beatles gear in the world”.

The shop also has a permanent display of original memorabilia from the sixties.

The Beatles Story

A few minutes' walk is The Beatles Story exhibition at Albert Dock showing the lives and times of John, Paul, George and Ringo, from the band's early days right through to their solo careers.

The Beatles Story is the world's largest permanent exhibition purely devoted to the lives and times of The Beatles.

Afternoon Beatles Magical Mystery Bus Tour

This two hour guided tour takes place on-board the colourful Magical Mystery Tour Bus with an enthusiastic qualified Beatles Guide.

The tour goes to the childhood homes of The Beatles, their birthplaces and to the familiar places that inspired their most well-known songs like Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever.

You’ll be kept entertained along the way by a professional Beatles Guide and some Fab Four tunes.

The Magical Mystery Tour ends at the Cavern Club, where you can enjoy live music every afternoon from the Cavern’s resident musicians and where you'll receive free entry into the Club and receive an exclusive souvenir.

You can take as much or as little time as you like at the Beatles exhibits.

You are in the heart of Liverpool and a major shopping centre and although perhaps hard to believe for the Beatles fans there are great tourist attractions outside of the Beatles centred around the Albert Dock area.

Your train departs for London at 6.47pm.

How to Travel from London to Liverpool by Train, Bus, and Car

tour to liverpool from london

Taylor McIntyre / TripSavvy

Liverpool shot to international fame in the 1960s thanks to their homegrown legends, The Beatles. The city has worked throughout the decades to maintain its status as a trailblazer in the arts and music (more artists from Liverpool have produced number one hits than from any other city in the world), and cultural junkies are sure to fall in love with the gritty charm of this Northern English town.

The fastest way to get to Liverpool is by train, which runs directly from London and only takes a little over two hours. However, train prices can be prohibitively expensive, especially if you're purchasing at the last minute. For travelers who need to stay within budget, the bus takes about twice as long but can cost a fraction of the price. If you're looking to make a road trip out of it, only 220 miles separate the two cities and a car gives you the freedom to explore along the way.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From London to Liverpool?

It's the slowest journey, but the bus is the cheapest way to get from London to Liverpool. Tickets through National Express start at roughly $14, and the journey takes between five and a half and six hours. Best of all, bus tickets remain relatively constant regardless of when you purchase them. So whether you plan weeks in advance or buy them on the same day that you travel, prices should only go up by a few pounds, if at all.

Buses depart in London from Victoria Station with connections to the Circle, Victoria, and District lines of the Underground. The Liverpool Bus Station is in the center of the city, and easily connected to the rest of Liverpool either by subway or walking.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From London to Liverpool?

The train is a great option not just because it's comfortable, but it's also the fastest way to get to Liverpool, with a total travel time of only 2 hours, 15 minutes. When you look at the schedule on the National Rail webpage , be aware that some routes are direct while others include a transfer, so double-check your itinerary before completing your purchase. Trains to Liverpool leave from Euston Station in London and arrive at Liverpool Lime Street Station, which is centrally located and accessible to the rest of the city.

"Advance" prices for train tickets, which are the least expensive tickets you can get, open up about eight to 10 weeks before the travel date. As demand goes up and seats sell out, prices can soar up to four or five times the original price. Flexibility is key for purchasing rail tickets in the U.K., so if you can't find a decent price, try looking at other times or nearby days for a better deal.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

If you have a vehicle, driving yourself to Liverpool is the only way to experience the various towns and scenic English countryside along the way. Liverpool is also a great stopping point before continuing on to other parts of Northern England and Scotland. The 220-mile drive takes roughly four hours, although traffic getting out of London and into Liverpool can cause significant delays. The M6 highway that goes from London to Liverpool is a toll road, and depending on what time you leave London, you may need to pay a congestion pricing toll within the city.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Liverpool?

If you're looking for warm weather, summer is the best time to visit Liverpool. From June through August, the average high temperature hovers around a comfortable 65 degrees F, perfect for walking around and exploring this trendy city. The summer months are also the busiest time to visit, and you can usually find good weather with fewer crowds by visiting in the late spring or early fall. Winter is cold, dark, and rainy, and the short days make it hard to fully enjoy all that Liverpool has to offer. Although snow is not uncommon in the colder months, the white blanket over the city offers its own charm.

What Is There to Do in Liverpool?

Liverpool is known as a cultural powerhouse, and rivals even London in the number of art galleries, museums, and historic buildings within its city limits. If you're a fan of The Beatles—or just music in general—you can take a tour of famous spots where the iconic group used to frequent. Or, take a more formal trip to a local museum like The Beatles Story or the British Music Experience. Apart from music, Liverpool is likely most famous for its soccer team. If you're a sports fan, there's no better way to round out the trip than a tour of Anfield Stadium where Liverpool F.C. plays—or better yet, get tickets to a match.

If you buy an advance ticket costs are around 24 pounds (about $33) but prices fluctuate depending on when you're traveling and when you purchase.

The train ride is 2 hours and 15 minutes long.

Liverpool is 220 miles (354 kilometers) from London.

It’s London to Liverpool on today’s part of our UK itinerary. We leave London this Saturday morning bound by train to Liverpool. Initially, we start at the wrong station (Paddington), but that’s ok as we get a photo with the Paddington statue.

We were fond of the Paddington books by Michael Bond in our youth. So it was a fun stop to visit the little bear statue.

Paddington bear statue in Paddington station

The Statue of Paddington Bear inside London’s iconic Paddington Station is a must-see for fans of the famous Michael Bond books. The bronze sculpture, created by Marcus Cornish, stands 3 feet tall and sits atop an ornately carved plinth in front of Paddington Station. The statue pays homage to the beloved character from Michael Bond’s famous children’s book series , which has been made into popular movies and television shows. The statue is a great photo op. We enjoyed a pose with Paddington Bear to commemorate this trip to London.

Selecting Our Train at Euston Station from London to Liverpool

We make our final tube trip to the Euston train station, where we eeny-miney-mo on which train we should take to Liverpool. We first opted for the slower (4 hours) and cheaper train, but while waiting for the train, we changed our mind and upgraded to the super go fast Virgin train, which would land us in Liverpool in just north of two hours. Our visit during the journey is predominantly English countryside and farmland.

The Places Where We Go arriving in Liverpool at Liverpool Lime Street Station

Arrival in Liverpool

And so we arrived in Liverpool, England! This vibrant city is filled with history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. We’ve heard about it through the years, as have many people, as the home to four young musicians who changed the history of popular music.

From iconic landmarks like the Merseyside Maritime Museum, we were anxious to get our fill of Liverpool in the short time we had available on our itinerary. Our first order of business was to find our hotel, the ibis Styles Liverpool Centre Dale Street .

The ibis Styles Liverpool Centre Dale Street Hotel

We stayed here for our one-night stay-over in Liverpool. The walk to the hotel from the train station was no longer than 10 minutes. The location had excellent access to the city center, including the docks and The Beatles Cavern Club historical area. Breakfast was available the following day when we came downstairs at 630am, and it offered a nice variety of breakfast options. Our room was spotless.

More Hotel Options in Liverpool

And on to adventures in liverpool.

We left our luggage at our hotel, the ibis Styles Liverpool Centre Dale Street , and then started to walk towards the docks for an afternoon of exploration.

A Brief Introduction to Liverpool

We like to find out things about the places we visit. Here’s a few things we learned about Liverpool.

Liverpool’s population is just under ½ million. It is the sixth most visited city in the UK and celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007.

Liverpool has more museums, galleries, listed buildings, and listed parks in the UK than anywhere outside of London.

The city boasts the oldest black community in the UK and the oldest Chinese community in all of Europe. People from Liverpool are referred to as “Liverpudlians” but are more commonly called “Scousers”, a name that references a form of stew once popularized by sailors in the city. And “scouser” is also the name of the local accent and dialect which your ears will hear when you walk these streets.

Merseyside Maritime Museum Visit

We are in Liverpool just before 12:30 pm. After checking into our hotel, we begin walking to our first destination, the Merseyside Maritime Museum . Hopeful of finding more puzzle pieces on my Dad’s entry to Liverpool in 1943, we get contact information for their archives office, which is closed on weekends (today). The museum had a model replica of the Empress of France ship my dad sailed from Liverpool to Montreal in 1948.

A model replica of the Empress of France at the Merseyside Maritime Museum

The Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool, England, is a must-see for anyone interested in the city’s maritime history. Located on the city’s historic Royal Albert Dock , the museum features interactive exhibits and displays that tell the story of Liverpool’s ports and their role in maritime trade. Visitors can explore galleries filled with artifacts from ships, learn about the history of lifeboats and watch films about the Liverpool docks. The museum also houses a collection of paintings, photographs, and memorabilia relating to the Liverpool waterfront. We enjoyed an afternoon of browsing its unique displays and impressive range of artifacts.

Inside the Merseyside Maritime Museum

At the Merseyside Maritime Museum, we wandered the four floors of galleries. During our visit, the exhibits we viewed included:

  • Seized!  The Border and Customs uncovered.
  • Emigration Gallery  – telling the story of people’s emigrations, primarily for poverty, persecution, or ambition.  Among the emigrants were thousands of children, many of who sailed alone.
  • Liverpool: World Gateway ;
  • Famous Ships – the Titanic, Lusitania (torpedoed with passengers aboard), and Empress of Ireland gallery; This section had a model replica of the Empress of France ship, which my dad sailed from Liverpool to Montreal in 1948.
  • The Battle of the Atlantic – provided quite an excellent overview of the breadth of this battle and the number of ships involved.  The story of the U.S. Merchant Marine is also told here – civilian seafarers who served during the war on merchant ships.  Over 6000 were killed, and the United States lost about 278 vessels engaged in trade during the war.  This brought home the perilous journey that people like my dad made in the 1940s to get to Liverpool
  • Art and the Sea Gallery

The museum includes the 2010 Michelin Guide-listed Maritime Dining Rooms, a café, a shop, and a lecture theatre.  And for people interested in research, the Office of Archives is a great resource.

We learned about the city’s shipping History. Liverpool was home to both the Cunard and White Star Line. And the city was the port of registry of the ocean liners RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania, and RMS Queen Mary. Living in Southern California, we have often stepped aboard the Queen Mary.

Museum of Liverpool

There are several free museums in Liverpool – the Merseyside Maritime being one. We also stopped at the Museum of Liverpool and took in an exhibit on the history of the docks.

The Museum of Liverpool is an award-winning landmark in the city. It showcases the diverse history of Liverpool through its interactive exhibits, offering an immersive experience as you explore some of the most iconic moments from this vibrant city’s past. From archaeological finds to stunning works of art, the museum offers something for everyone. There’s also a temporary exhibition hall featuring exhibits from around the world and interactive activities for children.

The museum has exhibits that help expand awareness of Liverpool’s history. The entrance was free.

A Personal Pilgrimage

This stop in Liverpool is a personal pilgrimage continued. My dad, Bolesław Dobrucki, left a Polish refugee camp in Palestine, sailing around the cape of Africa to arrive in Liverpool in 1943. There he spent five years in a Polish division of England’s Royal Air Force. Five years later, at age 20 in 1948, he sailed from Liverpool to Montreal, where a new chapter of life would begin. Seventy-one years later, I stand at the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, where my dad arrived and departed England. Footsteps followed.

At the Alfred Docks, Liverpool

UNESCO Heritage of Liverpool

UNESCO officially earmarked Liverpool’s Waterfront as a World Heritage Site in July 2004. This stretch of waterfront covers the Albert Dock, The Pier Head, and Stanley Dock to St. George’s Quarter which is home to St George’s Hall. The application for World Heritage Status highlighted Liverpool’s importance as a maritime mercantile city when Britain had its most significant global influence.

Learning about Liverpool’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a great way to explore the city, uncovering its history and culture in an informative and engaging way. You can take guided tours or explore this part of England, discovering the tales, legends, and stories that have created the city’s legacy.

Exploring Beatles History in Liverpool

We leave the docks and head into the city streets. Our next stop is the Cavern Club site, where the four lads from Liverpool known as The Beatles would craft their act and change the course of popular music.

Outside the Cavern Club, Liverpool

The streets here are packed, active, and loud. The sound of music comes from every direction.

And no tour to Liverpool is complete without stopping at the Beatles statue. Hello lads!

Brides, Brides, Everywhere

Liverpool appears to be the place to be also for bridal parties. They are everywhere. From the time we landed at the train station through our stroll in the city streets, we probably saw over 100 ladies enjoying various bridal party festivities. On one street, a flash mob type of bridal party scene comes to life.

Dinner at Cargo Seafood Restaurant

We walked and walked and walked looking for a seaside restaurant in Liverpool. We were somewhat stunned that our dockside walk had zero restaurants available until we could nearly not walk any further and came across Cargo Seafood Restaurant . The menu was a breath of fresh air. After two and a half weeks in the UK, this was our most robust seafood offering. We had monkfish and sea bass. Both were very well-seasoned and tasty. Good service and ambiance here.

On Sunday morning, we visited the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ The King . It is a unique and stunning structure located in the heart of the city.

Built in 1967, it is an impressive feat of modern architectural design, featuring a unique and innovative dome-shaped roofline. The entire building was constructed from reinforced concrete, with its roof made from copper sheets and interior walls lined with marble and granite.

Inside, the cathedral provides a tranquil atmosphere, with religious art and stunning stained glass windows. We attended morning mass which was held in the large Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

We understand this is the largest Catholic Church in the United Kingdom. It has quite a fascinating history told on display panels as you enter the church. There was no music provided at the 8:30 a.m. mass that we attended.

One way to get a city’s vibe is to walk its streets – and we did. Our iPhones show more than 14 miles covered during our visit. Our legs and feet feel it. Along the walking, we hear a different dialect spoken on these streets. We see another angle of England. We trace steps of history – some are our own, and some belong to the world.

Thank you Liverpool!

Taylor Swift fans can still get UK Eras tour tickets

W ith less than a month until Taylor Swift kicks off the UK leg of her Eras tour in Edinburgh on June 7, fans who have yet to secure tickets may still be in luck, as limited tickets are still available - but for a hefty price.

Swifties know all too well how challenging it has been to secure tickets , with shows in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London selling out almost immediately after going on sale.

However, Ticketmaster is still indicating 'low availability' for tickets in the capital cities of England, Scotland, and Wales, as well as 'limited availability' for the Liverpool shows - but remember, any official resale tickets are likely to be snapped up quickly.

If you're unsuccessful there, secondary ticket resale platforms such as viagogo and VividSeats might be worth a try, as they currently have tour tickets listed. But brace yourself for the prices, with tickets on viagogo listed for as much as £5,663 for her penultimate UK show - and a staggering £6,452 each for her final UK show, on August 17.

At the time of writing, the most affordable resale tickets are listed for £ 220 each on viagogo , for her third and final night in Edinburgh, and £254 each on VividSeats , also for an Edinburgh show, reports Bristol Live .

Those willing to travel further afield can bag a bargain on viagogo , and grab seats for as little as £27 for this coming Sunday (May 19) - but you'd have to be feeling pretty spontaneous, as the show in question will take place in Stockholm, Sweden.

In fact, all three shows in the Swedish capital city this weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), still have a number of tickets left for under £100 each on the resale site, while Madrid tickets, on May 29 and 30, are available for less than £150 each.

A spokesperson for viagogo, the ticket resale site, spoke to the Mirror about the frenzy surrounding Taylor Swift's Eras tour tickets: "The European leg of Taylor Swift's Eras tour has been long anticipated. We've not seen anything like this since The Beatles, and with tickets having only just gone on sale, demand is at its peak right now."

"Viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the freedom to buy and sell tickets to their favourite live events, safely and securely, backed by a guarantee. Sellers on our marketplace may list tickets at high values when demand is high, but prices can change and tend to reduce over time."

"We recommend Swifties wait for demand to settle, and check regularly for a listing that meets their budget. Tickets for Taylor Swift's UK dates have already sold for as low as 172 GBP on our platform. Also, tickets listed at eye-catchingly high levels rarely, if ever, sell."

On the other hand, AXS, an official ticket seller for Taylor Swift's concerts, warned fans against purchasing from unofficial sources, stating: "The only way to obtain a valid ticket for Taylor Swift's shows is via an official agent. Any tickets found to be purchased via an unauthorised reseller will not be valid for entry into the concerts and will be cancelled in accordance with the terms and conditions of sale."

They further stated: "Through official resale facilities, ticket resale prices are capped to help combat the inflation of ticket prices and put a stop to ticket touting. For more information on official resale facilities, fans should visit the website of their approved ticket agent."

For those Swifties still hoping to catch Taylor live, resale tickets can be found at the following links:.

TICKETMASTER - Grab your Taylor Swift resale tickets here .

VIAGOGO - Secure your Taylor Swift resale tickets here .

VIVIDSEATS - Buy your Taylor Swift resale tickets here .

Taylor Swift's Eras tour hits the UK in less than a month - and resale tickets are still available

tour to liverpool from london

Need some suggetions on transport from Heathrow airport to Liverpool Lime street.

Ideally we prefer to travel to liverpool on the same day so we dont need to rush the next morning.

Based on my research we can catch the 1130am Underground train at Heathrow which will stopover at Euston and then proceed to Liverpool Lime street.

1. i am not sure which transport website will be a good one to book ( is there a preferred network as I see there are multiple websites).?

2. Another option I have read is to take the Heathrow express or Uber to central London first.

I am looking for an option that has less hassle and transfers. Travelling with 2 teenagers.

Any suggestions?

Get your tickets for the rail journey from Euston to Liverpool at http://avantiwestcoast.co.uk

Book from 12 weeks before travel for the cheapest Advance tickets. BUT note that these cheap tickets commit you to travelling only on your chosen train. So give yourself a four to five hour buffer after landing at Heathrow in case of any airport delays.

For Heathrow to Euston take the Underground. The fare is £5.60. You pay by tapping with a credit card or phone pay app at the start and end of your journey. You could take the Piccadilly line to Green Park, then Victoria line to Euston.

tour to liverpool from london

I think you are right to want to go straight to Liverpool and the train from Euston is the best way as you can sleep through the journey if you want to.

rentaquote has given you comprehensive advice on how it all works. You can give yourselves a 4-5 hour buffer as suggested, or alternatively you can look at buying a more flexible ticket, although this will cost you more.

Sometimes I go the cheap route when arriving by air, and sometimes I opt for a bit more flexibility. I don't see the point in rushing this time as you probably won't be able to access your accommodation until the afternoon.

tour to liverpool from london

At Euston you would catch a Avanti Westcoast Train to Liverpool Lime St.

As said if you can book “ADVANCE” tickets for this service you can save money, downside is is you must take the train you have booked and no other.

Usual advice is to book a train around 4 hours after scheduled wheels down.

tour to liverpool from london

Please give us some important information. The details do matter for best advice on your quandry.

On what date do you land at Heathrow.

What exact ages will the teenagers be.

To get to Euston from Heathrow you have two options.

The Piccadilly underground line to Green Park and change for the Victoria line to Euston, adult fare (aged 16 and over) using contactless is £5.60. Follow the yellow signs after you leave the customs area at the airport.

You use contactless payment the same as you would on the MRT, allow about an hour for the travel time on both routes.

If the kids are aged 15 or under then read the pinned article at the top of page 1 on the forum for details on how they can pay.

Unfortunately this change of itinerary and the release of tour tickets has created quite a problem for you.

There are so many options, but none of them is ideal. However, you will definitely enjoy the tour inside Anfield, it's excellent.

" looking for an option that has less hassle and transfers "

Blackerry Cars provide that service and are well regarded on these forums. They seem to be quoting about £376 for that Heathrow Distance Service.

" Ideally we prefer to travel to liverpool on the same day so we dont need to rush the next morning "

But - could you contact Anfield and ask to be swapped to something like a 1300 or 1400 or 1500 tour time.

That way you could have your 15 hour flight , then spend one night recovering in a London hotel; then next morning have a fixed schedule (hence cheapest train ticket) for London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street prior to the Anfield tour.

How many nights are you spending in Liverpool ?

Thanks for the suggestions .

Personally booking the entire journey starting from Heathrow seems less stressful as even if we caught an earlier train to Euston, we would still end up having to wait for the Aventis train to Lime street.

So any cons of booking the entire journey through Trainline? Time-wise I do not see much difference as it is about 3.5 hours altogether. Perhaps only difference is costs t may be cheaper to book Avantis from Euston instead?

True but can't change that now.

East London services to be affected by Bank Holiday rail upgrades

Most greater anglia and london overground services will be running as normal, but passengers should check before travelling, due to some engineering works..

Andy Weekes avatar

Essential maintenance work is scheduled to take place over the late May bank holiday, Saturday 25th – Monday 27th May, affecting services across East Anglia and in East London.

Although many services will be running, operators and Network Rail strongly advise passengers to check their journeys before travelling, especially as there will be disruption to the main line through Essex over that weekend.

Greater Anglia services

Services between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, Ipswich, Clacton, Colchester and Braintree will not run south of Witham between Saturday 25th – Monday 27th May.

This is to allow work to continue on building Beaulieu Park station , where track, overhead wires and footbridges will be installed at the first newly built station on the Great Eastern Main Line in over a century.

Beaulieu Park Station Visualisation

Buses will run between Witham and Billericay, taking approximately 50 minutes. Stopper buses will also be in place through Hatfield Peverel and Chelmsford, taking just over an hour.

From Billericay, regular trains will operate to Shenfield, Stratford and London Liverpool Street.

There will also be shuttle buses running between Ingatestone and Chelmsford and Ingatestone and Shenfield.

No trains will operate between Ipswich and Lowestoft on Sunday 26th or Monday 27th May and replacement buses will run instead. This is due to track maintenance and tamping between Westerfield and Oulton Broad South.

Instead of calling at Seven Sisters, trains will stop at Tottenham Hale from Sunday 26th – Tuesday 28th May.

Maintenance work is also planned on platforms at London Liverpool Street station.

Passengers are advised to check their journeys at the Greater Anglia website .

A rail replacement service will run while the work takes place, and passengers are advised to check before they travel and allow more time for their journey. Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director

London Overground services

Work to replace the points at Bury Street Junction in North London will affect services going to and from Enfield Town and Cheshunt.

No London Overground trains will run between Liverpool Street and Enfield Town or Cheshunt on Sunday 26th or Monday 27th May.

On these dates, trains between Liverpool Street and Chingford will be running, but not call at Bethnal Green.

There will be no London Overground trains between Hackney Downs and Enfield Town or Cheshunt stations on Tuesday 28th May.

A revised service will operate between Liverpool Street and Chingford. Some of these trains will make additional stops at Cambridge Heath and London Fields and will depart earlier than usual.

Replacement buses will be in place between Seven Sisters, Enfield Town and Cheshunt. London Underground and London Buses will be running between Liverpool Street and Seven Sisters.

Network Rail recommends using Clapton station on the Chingford line for passengers wanting to go to or from Rectory Road and Stoke Newington.

London Overground train at Liverpool Street

There will be similar changes to services on the following weekends, due to preparatory and follow-up work:

  • Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May
  • Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June
  • Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June
  • Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June
  • Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July

Trains will be running on Saturday 25th May for the rugby Investec Champions Cup Final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

For up-to-date information on these services, passengers should go to the TFL website .

We have a lot of great destinations on our network, and we hope people are able to get out and about this the late May bank holiday weekend. There will be some engineering work taking place on our network. A rail replacement service will run while the work takes place, and passengers are advised to check before they travel and allow more time for their journey. This work is extremely important to help maintain the safe and reliable running of the railway. We would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while this essential maintenance is carried out. Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director
We've worked with our train operators to keep the majority of the railway open for this second bank holiday in May. There will be, however, some construction, track and overhead line maintenance work to keep our railway safe and reliable. Every maintenance task completed during this time contributes to a dependable service for all those travelling across Anglia. Lawrence Bowman, Network Rail's route director for Anglia

Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp says 'some clubs' weren't willing to wait for Unai Emery to deliver success

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes some clubs paid the price for not proving willing to “wait” for Unai Emery to deliver success.

The Reds boss takes his side to Emery’s Aston Villa on Monday in the penultimate game of his Liverpool career.

Emery has turned Villa around having replaced Steven Gerrard in October 2022, steering the club away from a relegation fight before leading them into Europe. Such has been his impact this season, the Spaniard was confirmed as one of the nominees for the Premier League’s Manager of the Year Award earlier this week.

While their Europa Conference League dreams were ended by a 6-2 aggregate defeat to Olympiakos on Thursday night , Villa are in command in the battle for the top four.

They lead fifth-placed Tottenham by seven points, albeit Spurs still have a game in hand.

Emery was won silverware at almost every club he’s managed and has rebuilt his reputation in the Premier League following his sacking at Arsenal only 18 months after replacing Arsene Wenger.

“He is one of the best we have in the business, said Klopp.

“Some clubs weren't ready to wait for it, but looking back, maybe these clubs would have made different decisions.

“I've known him for so long. He always had a clear idea. Won plenty of times with Sevilla.

"Really tricky with Villarreal. He always organises his team really well. The job he is doing is absolutely exceptional. We all know how difficult it is to qualify for the Champions League and that he will probably do that is absolutely exceptional."

Klopp also admitted that Liverpool’s outside chance of winning the Premier League title was not their “number one” priority in their final two games of the season.

"It's not number one every morning on the priority list [winning the title]. We can all read the table and see the situation.

"Do we expect them to lose? [Manchester] City has to lose three games. Difficult to see that, but you never know. Arsenal has to lose two games. Difficult. They both play before us, so let's talk on Monday if they both lose, but I do not expect that.

"We have the chance to move on to 80 points and like all things in life, you should never take that for granted. And for that we need points and to win at least one of the two games."
