best portable dog fence for rv

As a proud dog parent and an RV owner, you want your pet to run around the campsite or parking area without the risk of getting lost. Your canine companions should be able to stretch their legs, allowing them to get their much-needed exercise while you are camping or boondocking.

It is for that reason that you need the best portable dog fence for RV. A portable dog yard will allow you to set up a perimeter around your camper, motorhome, or travel trailer for your pooch.

However, it is important to think about some important factors before buying a portable outdoor dog fence. That way, you can gain excellent value from the money you spent on the product. Plus, you will not have to worry about the removable dog fence getting damaged or breaking down soon with the right pet pen.

Some of the factors that you need to consider are:

  • Your dog’s size: Take a look at your dog’s size when thinking about camping dog fence ideas. Purchase portable dog fences that are reasonably tall so that your pet cannot jump over them.
  • Material: Many pet owners know that their dogs will not jump over the portable fence around their RV campsites. However, those canines might have something else in mind – biting on the fence or bumping into it.
  • Make sure that the camping dog fence you buy is reasonably durable. That way, the product will not break if your pet decides to become an escape artist by biting the RV dog fence construction.
  • Perimeter range: The portable dog fence should also have enough space for your pet to run around while staying at the campsite. The product should provide a reasonable area for your pets to stretch their legs without the added risk of them running away.

Now that you know some of the important factors to think about when looking for the top-rated portable dog fences, keep reading to know the top 12 dog fences I found and tested. Also, read the buying guide for more tips.

Top 12 Portable Dog Fence for RV Reviews

1. yaheetech heavy-duty pet playpen.

travel trailer pet fence

I found the design of this dog fence for camping to be ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. I purchased the 16-panel variant, but it is also available in smaller and larger sizes. Buyers can purchase the smaller model with the eight panels if they want to have a dog playpen inside a reasonably large camper or fifth wheel. On the other hand, the 32-panel dog pen can be better for those who want a portable dog fence for large dogs.

Aside from the different variations, this durable fence has a sturdy iron construction. This metal fence did a good job in keeping my dog in the perimeter I set up.

Furthermore, I liked that the kit comes with two entrances. These two entryways allow me to conveniently walk up to my dog while he’s in the playpen without moving much.

Moreover, the panel is sufficiently tall. At 40 inches high, my dog has trouble jumping over the fence, which is a good thing. The best that he could do is to put his paws onto the top of the fence. But if my pooch attempts to jump over the fence, he would hurt his chest or belly. I think he learned his lesson the first time he tried it and did not attempt jumping over this fence again.

  • Available in different sizes, such as 8-, 16-, and 32-panel variants
  • Durable iron construction
  • Two gates allow for convenient entry
  • Sufficiently tall panels prevent dogs from jumping over the portable fence
  • The latch might wiggle when a dog bumps into the fence

2. Midwest 552-30 Foldable Dog Pen

travel trailer pet fence

Zoomies are difficult to explain; these events come and go as dogs have the urge to run around the premises. However, it also means that dogs can run away in search of adventure if we are not careful. Thankfully, this portable camping dog fence prevents that from happening.

This RV dog fence is one of the sturdier models I got to install for my pet. At times, my pooch would run around the perimeter I set up using this product. He would then bump into the fence, but the material has such excellent durability that it will only rattle a bit instead of becoming dented or, worse, broken.

The kit also comes with 8 ground anchors. I used four ground stakes on both ends of the perimeter, and the fencing became more solid than before. These accessories are great for my dog’s personality that causes him to run around randomly.

Continuing its list of safety features is this product’s thumb snaps. With these parts, assembly and disassembly become a breeze. It only takes a few minutes (at most) to set up the entire fence. The manufacturer is even kind enough to include a 1-year warranty.

  • Sturdy fence that prevents breaking during zoomies
  • Stable anchored design
  • Thumb snaps promote easy assembly
  • 1-year manufacturer’s warranty
  • This pen might not be suitable for large dog breeds

3. ZENY Foldable Metal Dog Pen

travel trailer pet fence

Some dog fences are mixed bags of features that allow usage for both indoors and outdoors. This product is one of those top-notch variants. I bought the 16-panel variant, but this fence is also available with an 8-panel option. The 16 panels are reasonably large for outdoor use. On the other hand, some pet parents might prefer the 8-panel model for indoor use.

If used outside, the 16 panels can create a 66.52 square foot perimeter near my motorhome. That space is enough room for my dog to run around the area while we are on a camping trip.

The build quality is also nothing to laugh at. It has a premium feel, and its design ensures that certain dogs will stay within the perimeter. Aside from catering to different usage settings, this metal dog pen has a durable iron construction. It has a rust-resistant coated metal design, which holds fairly well against different weather in my experience.

The gates also come with secure slide-bolt latches. These components slide into place and do not rattle or wiggle if my dog bumps into the fence.

  • Available in two options to promote indoor and outdoor use
  • 16-panel variant creates a 66.52 square foot locked space for dogs
  • Durable iron construction with rust-resistant coating
  • Secure slide bolt latches do not rattle or wiggle
  • The 24-inch high panels might not be suitable for larger breeds

4. BestPet Heavy-Duty Dog Kennel

travel trailer pet fence

Other fences for dogs tend to be quite difficult to set up. Those models tend to require special tools to complete the assembly, which also makes disassembly more challenging than intended. Thankfully, that is not the case with this product.

I would even go as far as to say that this is one of the most trusted portable metal fences for camping trips, thanks to its easy-to-install design. The way this product is constructed also beats having to make a DIY RV dog fence, especially for time-conscious folks like me.

The fence also has a lightweight construction and is collapsible. This roll up portable dog fence cements its place as one of the most convenient to set up and disassemble models on the market. I didn’t even have to use any special tools for the assembly and removal of this doggie play area.

It also has a commendable frame, seeing that it has a black-coated finish. I found that this rugged construction is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, particularly for the latter. It did a good job of resisting the elements because I did not find significant signs of wear after leaving the pen outdoors for extended periods.

  • Easy-to-install design
  • Black-coated construction can work indoors and outdoors
  • Does not require special tools for assembly and disassembly
  • Lightweight portable dog fence with a collapsible design
  • The gaps between the panels might become a safety hazard for some dogs

5. Amazon Basics 9004-24B Foldable Pet Exercise and Playpen

travel trailer pet fence

This particular playpen for pets is a game changer for me. It has many likable features that many pet parents will love.

Although the model I purchased for a friend’s pup has a height of 24 feet, this product is also available with 48-inch panels. That variant is great for larger dogs. Furthermore, the 16-square-foot enclosure it produced is reasonable for pet parents owning more than one dog.

I also like that this pet pen makes use of high-quality materials with a rust-proof finish, making it great for outdoor use. I can also fold the panels into the right shape effortlessly.

Additionally, each panel folds flat during disassembly. This feature makes it easy to store for it does not take a significant amount of space. Furthermore, this design is not difficult to assemble. It did not take me a lot of time to install it at the campsite, so the dog did not have to wait long to run around the area.

  • Available in different sizes, making it ideal for small and bigger dogs
  • Sufficiently large enclosure is enough space for several dogs
  • Top-notch construction with a rust-proof coating is excellent for outdoor setups
  • Folding design promotes easy setup, disassembly, and storage
  • The locks tend to be difficult to open and close

6. New World Pet Products B558-48 Foldable Pet Exercise and Playpen

travel trailer pet fence

This foldable playpen for dogs can be the perfect solution for convenient and flexible fencing for many pooch parents. Its list of many likable features will provide excellent value for money. Plus, dogs of different sizes and personalities will be kept happy and safe within this fence’s perimeter.

One aspect of this pet playpen that I like is that I was able to join this fence with other dog pens. The ability to connect multiple playpens means that I can have a larger perimeter than before, promoting the perfect portable dog park in my campsite.

With it, I could invite other dog lovers in my area and have a little doggie meet-and-greet. Also, since I can make the perimeter larger than before, the question of ‘how much room do I need’ can now disappear from my mind.

Furthermore, the package comes with four metal stakes that dig into the ground nicely. These parts keep the pen secure while multiple dogs are playing inside. It is also possible to secure other pets inside this fence, such as ducks, rabbits, and large turtles.

The entire pen is also reasonably easy to install. There are secure-locking thumb snaps across the design of the product that makes for straightforward and secure setups. These components work quite well, seeing that dogs that are playing in the fenced perimeter could not open the panels, even if they applied a good amount of force.

  • Can connect with other RV dog fences to increase the perimeter
  • The stakes pierce the ground properly and provide a haven for pets
  • Usable for dogs & other types of pets, such as rabbits and turtles, to play securely
  • Reasonably straightforward install process
  • Resists force well
  • Has no door

7. BestPet Dog Pen

travel trailer pet fence

One of my camper friends has a small pup that seems to have a fondness for climbing on fences. Therefore, it became a challenging endeavor to keep the puppy in a fence because he would climb out using his tiny paws and claws. But those days came to an end when my camping mate bought this product.

This dog pen does not rattle or shake significantly while dogs are playing inside it. The stakes do a good job of keeping the panels as stable as possible. Furthermore, the design is tall enough that puppies find it tough to climb onto. The horizontal spacing between each hole is reasonably small so a puppy’s tiny head can’t squeeze out of the fence.

Moreover, this fence is a joy to use, thanks to its flexibility. The panels do not bend, but my friend and I were able to change the size of the perimeter by folding or expanding some of the panels.

This fence also comes with step-thru doors located on two sides. These entryways make it easy for us to climb in and out of the fenced perimeter if we wanted to play with our dogs without fear of them making a run for it.

  • The fence does not rattle or shake during a dog’s rough play in the perimeter
  • Stakes keep the fence fairly stable
  • Pets can’t climb onto the pen or stick their heads out
  • Panels can fold or expand to fit the allowable space
  • Strategically placed entryways for easy access and exit to and from the perimeter
  • Paint job could be better

8. FXW Outdoor Dog Playpen

travel trailer pet fence

My dog can be smarter than he looks. In one instance, I looked away for a few moments, only to find out that he escaped from a pen that I previously had. It was because my pooch was able to jiggle the lock, allowing him to escape. But those days are gone when I replaced my old dog playpen with this model.

I can safely say that this product is dog safe, thanks to its automatic locking device. The latch has a gravity-action mechanism, preventing dogs from pushing the entryway open by shaking or wiggling the entryway.

Aside from being a secure choice, this dog pen is also quite versatile. I was able to connect it with other pet fences to increase (or decrease) the size of the perimeter based on the current allowable space. Plus, the entire fence folds flat for easy storage, which is ideal when it is time to move to another camping or parking location.

I also liked that the panels have anti-injury balls. These accessories protect some pets that decide to jump out of the gate but fail to create a clean hop over the fence. Other pens would only have the metal bar, and that can hurt the animals attempting to jump over the perimeter. But with this playpen, pet owners can breathe easily.

  • Gravity-based automatic lock that prevents accidental opening of the gate
  • Top-notch versatility allows the panels to connect with other RV dog fences
  • Folds flat for easy storage
  • Panels have anti-injury balls that protect pets from getting harmed
  • Might need to have an anti-rust coating to last longer than expected

9. Topeakmart Heavy-Duty Portable Pet Pen

travel trailer pet fence

I was hesitant to purchase this particular pet pen because the price tag was slightly over my budget. But I went ahead in buying it because I read a lot of good feedback from other campers that already own it. Once it arrived at my address, I was more than happy with the results that it provided.

For instance, I liked that each panel has a premium powder-coated finish. Even the stakes that come with the package have the same high-quality coating.

On the downside, the panels did not hold up well when exposed to significant amounts of moisture. I found some rust forming on the gate’s metal material after a few days of heavy rainfall in my area.

Still, I liked that the fence has rounded edges. This design choice helps keep my dog safe while he runs around the fenced perimeter. The gate also has two hinged doors, allowing for easy entry and exit.

  • Premium powder-coated finish
  • Rounded corners allow safe and secure play for dogs
  • Two hinged doors promote easy entry and exit
  • Flexible hinges create versatility to adapt to different space requirements
  • More expensive than many other competing products
  • Might not be ideal for fairly wet places

10. Nova Microdermabrasion Indoor and Outdoor Play Yard

travel trailer pet fence

When I adopted a small pup, I had some trouble with keeping him inside an old pet playpen because of the large holes on the panels. So I decided to buy this product, which I think is ideal for keeping many small and some medium-sized breeds safe while they play outdoors.

Each panel has a height of 24 inches, which is not tall enough for large dogs. On the other hand, breeds like Corgis, Pugs, and Chihuahuas will find it more challenging than usual to jump over this height.

Furthermore, I liked that the gate has a rust-resistant and powder-coated finish, making it more durable than many of its competitors. I left the fence outside for a few weeks, and happily found a lack of visible rust on its surface.

The panels are also reasonably easy to set up and disassemble. Moreover, the panels fold flat for easy storage. Also, I can make the fence into different shapes and sizes, depending on the space requirements. For instance, it is possible to transform the shape of the gate into an octagon, rectangle, or square. It was even possible to make it into an L-shape if needed.

  • Secures many small- to medium-sized pups and dogs inside its perimeter
  • Rust-resistant and powder-coated finish on the panels
  • Fairly easy to set up, disassemble, and store
  • Can be folded to create different shapes and sizes
  • Large space provided when all the panels extend fully
  • Not as ideal for large dogs as a tall portable dog fence

11. IRIS 301714 Exercise Pet Playpen

travel trailer pet fence

I found this pet playpen to be at a budget-friendly price point. But I noticed that its features are more geared towards indoor usage than outdoors.

For instance, the panels have non-skid rubber feet, allowing them to stay in place even when I put the gate on a slippery indoor floor. The feet also do a sufficiently good job in reducing fence slippage when placed outside.

The panels also have this beautiful white-colored aesthetic that blends well with my camper’s theme. On the downside, the color white also means that it can get dirty easily, which can be the case when I camp in fairly wet and muddy locations.

Also, I liked that the product has a built-in doggie gate for many small breeds and some medium dogs to enter and exit the gate’s premises conveniently. Once they’re inside, I can lock the playpen with the built-in latch.

The locking system is also quite secure and does not jiggle significantly when my dog bumps into the panels. I am happily content that the fence does not budge when I placed a rambunctious pup in its perimeter.

  • Budget-friendly price point
  • Rubber parts let the panels stay in place while placed on slippery surfaces
  • Beautiful-looking white color
  • Built-in doggie gate is great for easy access and exit for many dogs
  • The fence does not budge even when a rambunctious puppy is in it
  • Might not be ideal for outdoor use because of its white color

12. VIVOHOME VH786 Heavy-Duty Exercise Pet Fence

travel trailer pet fence

There are many things to like about this pet fence. It is a great place to keep my dog in a secure spot without the worry of him running off into the great outdoors.

First, this multi-functional and portable dog gate-slash-crate is sufficiently flexible and versatile. I could connect and shape the 8 panels in different ways. In my experience, I was able to shape the fence into a rectangle, square, or octagon, depending on the available space.

Moreover, I liked that the fence is fairly secure. The package comes with stakes that anchor into the ground. These accessories do their jobs well, for the panels do not budge when my dog bumps into them.

Plus, the entire product is fairly lightweight. A friend of mine helped me in lifting the entire fence without disassembling it. I could do the lifting myself if I was not too lazy regarding folding the panels first.

But that is not to say that this product is difficult to set up and put away. It only takes a few minutes to install and remove. Plus, the panels collapse into a flat form, promoting easy storage.

  • Flexible and versatile design promotes different shapes for the fence
  • Secure pen does not budge when bumped
  • Fairly lightweight construction allows lifting without disassembly
  • It only takes a few minutes to install or put away
  • The gaps between panels might become safety hazards

Portable Dog Fences for RV Buying Guide

camping-dog-fence

Many pet owners, including those who own RVs and campers, do not want their pets scurrying off into the unknown. Therefore, they need to use a camping dog fence. But what is the most suitable portable dog fence for camping for you?

To answer that question, it is important to think about some essential factors to help with your purchasing decision. In this section, you are going to know about those elements so that you can buy the right RV pet fence for you and your dog.

Your Dog’s Size

The first step to buying an RV outside dog fence is to take a look at your dog’s height and jumping ability. Is your dog tall or short? Would your pet pooch be capable of jumping over tall heights or not? Are your canine companions so hyperactive that they might jump on top of the fence if it is too short?

Ask yourself these questions when shopping for RV pet enclosures. The portable pet fence for RV should be tall enough that your dog will not be able to jump over it.

Aside from the height of the camping fence for dogs, you also need to consider the product’s material. The RV portable pet fence should be sufficiently durable so it does not dent or break if your dog bumps into it.

Perimeter Range

Many dogs like to run around wide-open spaces. However, some canines give into their curiosities, increasing the risks of them getting lost.

While you are thinking of RV dog fence ideas, make sure to consider the possibility of your pets and their zoomies. As your dogs are running around at the campsite, make sure that there is minimal risk of them running away. Therefore, the pet fencing for camping that you get should encircle a reasonably large perimeter around your camper’s parking area for your pets to stretch their legs properly.

Adaptability

Sometimes dog owners will become proud owners of different canines. These pets might come in different breeds, which means that you need a portable camping fence with a configurable nature.

Consider buying a portable fence for dogs that has a resizing feature. With that functionality, you can adjust the portable fence for RV based on your current pets.

Last, the RV fence for dogs that you purchase should coincide with your budget. You do not want to buy portable dog runs for camping that is over your spending allowance. Otherwise, you might regret the purchase, for you may not have enough spending power to buy other essential items.

portable-dog-fence-for-camping

How Big Should A Portable Dog Fence Be When Camping?

The dimensions of your dog fence for camping depend on your pet’s size. If you have medium-sized dogs, consider buying larger-than-average portable fences. On the other hand, if you are a pet parent to small dogs, such as Chihuahuas or Corgis, using fairly small portable fences should suffice.

Is A Portable Dog Fence For RV Difficult To Set Up?

Some portable dog fences for RVs are difficult to set up. However, some models are sufficiently easy to install. The trick here is to look at portable dog fence reviews first before making your final purchasing decision.

Can You Anchor A Portable Dog Fence?

Some portable dog camping fences have accessories that you can use to anchor them into the ground. Search for these products to make sure that your pets stay put within the perimeter.

In addition, if you are looking for products with the purpose of protecting your property or pets when outdoors. You can refer to the most trusted RV carbon monoxide detectors and list of top-rated RV cabinet latches.

You are now at the end of this guide, and you should have a good idea of your best portable dog fence for RV. It might be challenging to pick the right model for your specific needs. But take the time to think about your dog’s size and the characteristics you want in a portable dog pen.

My top-rated choice is the BestPet Dog Kennel. This product does not rattle or shake when dogs are roughhousing. Also, the panels promote different sizes and shapes to fit different space requirements.

We've traveled with a dog since we started RVing over 11 years ago (and for many years before that in pop-up camper-mode). We started RVing with our beloved dog, Tai, a big, beautiful, and hairy Norwegian Elkhound. When he passed on, we got another Elkhound named Bo, and he's been traveling with us ever since.

We LOVE traveling with our dog, and we're certainly not alone. RVers are often dog owners with furry friends in all different shapes and sizes.

But traveling with a dog comes with its challenges… Especially when it comes to keeping your dog safe and contained.

We've recently discovered the best portable fence for our adventurous dog, which we're going to show and tell you about. But we know the best fence for us might not be right for you.

So, we also list great alternatives to help you find the right portable dog fence for your furry friend.

The Best Portable Camping Dog Fence (For Us)

Like what you see in these videos?  We'd appreciate it if you would Subscribe to our YouTube Channel ( easy to do right here ) and consider “ringing the bell icon” to be notified of any new video from us. 🙂 Thanks!

SpotOn GPS Fence is our top choice because it fits our dog's needs perfectly, and we think it's a great option for many of our fellow RVers. You can get a complete introduction by watching the video above and see how it gives us peace of mind on our two properties and while we travel.

You can also read our Complete Review of SpotOn Satellite Dog Fence , but we'll summarize the key points here.

Why the SpotOn GPS Fence Works for Us

It's important to understand why the SpotOn fence works for us and why it won't work for some campers. It comes down to how and where we RV, as we are primarily boondockers.

As boondockers, we prefer camping in remote locations and rarely camp in traditional campgrounds. That means we're not confined to a small campsite, nor do we often encounter many people.

We also recently purchased two RV properties , where we camp/live for extended periods of time. So, virtual fences are the way to go since we can't easily move physical fences around these big sites.

The SpotOn fence allows us to easily set virtual perimeters that instantly sync with the dog collar Bo wears. If you watch the video or read our full review, you can see how easy it is to set boundaries by walking the perimeter or drawing it on a map in the app.

It beeps whenever he approaches a boundary to alert him not to proceed further. After a few days of training, he listens to these beeps and stays within his set perimeter.

Campers Swear By This Portable Device That Keeps Dogs Safe -The Best Portable Dog Fence for Camping (2024) 1

Why SpotOn Might Not Work for You

SpotOn is designed for open outdoor use and needs a minimum of a 1/2 acre to work correctly, which is 21,780 square feet of space. To give you an idea, that's about 150 feet by 150 feet if it was a square plot.

Their website states that the boundary “should be at least 80 feet wide at its narrowest point. Because your dog will hear tones 10 feet inside the boundary, if your fence is too narrow at any point, your dog will not be able to move freely without constantly hearing tones.”

So, as you can see, SpotOn is not a good option for keeping your dog confined to a traditional campsite. It would beep nonstop. That's why we have a list of temporary dog fence options below for those who only camp that way.

The other main limiting factor is its cost. As stated in the video, the Spot On Fence system we purchased was not cheap. It costs $1295 (you can take $100 off using the promo code RVLIFESTYLE100 ). But since one collar can be used to set up multiple fences in multiple locations, it was money well spent for us.

3 Great Alternatives for a Portable Camping Fence

Invisible fences are ideal in certain circumstances, but physical fences are still a great way to create a safe environment and play area for your pet. They come in many different sizes for small dogs, large dogs, and everything in between.

If you're trying to simply contain your dog on a traditional camping site, a physical RV dog fence is probably the way to go. So, here are some of our top picks that offer easy setup and easy storage. Hopefully, you can find the best solution for you.

Safety Note: Dogs shouldn't be left alone in outdoor playpens when you leave a campsite. It's against many campgrounds' regulations and isn't a good idea as dogs may escape (or be stolen) without supervision.

1. FXW Dog Playpen

FXW Aster Dog Playpen

The FXW Aster Dog Playpen is a favorite among RVers. This RV pet fence comes in different heights and with a different number of panels. So, you can buy 24″ tall panels for smaller dogs or up to 40″ tall for larger dogs and from 6 to 48 fence panels.

This playpen has two key features that set it apart from others. The first is that it doesn't have sharp edges; its ground stakes have a round ball on top. The second is its upgraded door latch that prevents the pet from accidentally pushing it open.

2. IRIS USA Dog Playpen

IRIS USA

IRIS USA makes a few different playpens for dogs, primarily for smaller outdoor areas or indoor use. Like the FXW, it doesn't have sharp edges, is easy to assemble and fold down and store.

Their pens are an excellent choice for RVers with smaller dogs and those who want to confine a space inside and out of their RV.

3. Heavy Duty Dog Tie Cable & Stake

We must start by saying we do not recommend tying your dog to a stake and leaving your campsite. However, many people like to keep their dogs tied to a stake while sitting out on their campsite instead of holding onto a leash. This heavy-duty stake and cable is a good choice for such use.

Some Campgrounds Do NOT Allow Dog Fences

Some campgrounds do not allow dog fences, and more and more are banning them. The main reason campgrounds are banning them altogether is that people are leaving their dogs unattended in a portable pet fence.

As we mentioned, your dogs shouldn't be left unattended outside your RV in a campground . It exposes your dog, fellow campers, and the campground to more risk. So, understandably, campgrounds are trying to minimize that risk.

Here's a helpful article: How to SAFELY Leave Your Dog Alone in Your RV (Cats, too!) .

So, while traveling with a portable playpen is always a good idea, be aware that you can't always use it at certain campgrounds. It's best to check the pet policy or call ahead before your next camping trip.

We bought the Spot On fence about three months ago and it has given us a lot of peace of mind when Sig is out of the house. We have a fence set up around the property where we live and a fence set up around another property where we have rentals. It has worked flawless so far. We knew that we would need a way to keep Sig safe when we begin our RV journey later this year and the Spot On seemed to fit that need as well.

As for the GPS fence. We are currently getting our dog used to the Invisible fence brand dog fence. It takes a lot of training for the dog to get used to where their boundaries are. I cannot imagine going to different campsites and having the dog go through that. It would never know where to walk and not walk. I know my dog would NEVER leave the RV. Also, besides boon-docking, how many campsites have an 1/2 acre? As for the screw type with the cable, We went with one of the plastic coated dumbbells. Due to the root system in many parks, we found that it is hard to drive into the ground and get out, We have a small dog and with that we can place it anywhere. Just make sure it heavy enough for him/her not to pull away.

Glad you found a solution for your pet! Mike and Jen like to do a lot of boondocking, and with the beep warning system they have actually had a really good experience with their dog, Bo, learning the boundaries quickly and enjoying the space within the boundaries without a leash. Thanks for sharing your experience – definitely everyone needs to do what is best for their pet and camping style. Happy Trails! Team RV Lifestyle

6 Best Portable Dog Fences For Camping (RV & Outdoor)

Portable Dog Fences for Outside the RV

There are tons of reasons to bring your dog camping.

You don’t need to get a sitter, you get to enjoy nature with them, and they help you feel safer at night.

While we all love dogs there are a few things to think about before you bring them camping or RVing.

First, you are probably going to be somewhere totally new and unfamiliar to your dog. If they get out, it’s going to be harder to find them.

Also, campers are much smaller than homes, they might get a little restless being in a confined space for longer than they’re used to.

The best way to make sure your dog is safe when camping is to keep them on a leash, but not every dog is used to that, especially if you plan on camping for a long time.

One way to make things easier for you and your dog is to bring an outdoor portable dog fence.

Foldable/portable dog fences are very versatile for camping. They can be used as playpens or be set up as a dog fence around your RV so they can go in or out of the RV freely.

In this review, I’ll go over some of the best portable dog fences for camping. They can all be used as playpens or fences for outside the camper.

Many companies have fantastic options that are different heights to accommodate both small and large dogs. There are also optional shade covers for many of them that I’ll talk about in each review.

Just as a warning. Because they are portable RV dog fences are made with lighter materials than permanent dog kennels.

If your dog isn’t used to fences or playpens and they are constantly trying to get out, the portable fence option may not be the best fit.

Best Portable Dog Fences Reviewed

All dog sizes, 1. midwest portable dog fence.

The MidWest portable dog fence is one of the best out there. It’s simple but effective and there are lots of different height options for different sizes of dogs.

Starting with the build, the panels are made with thick 9 and 11 gauge steel wire. The 9 gauge is used for the sides and bottom of each panel and the thinner 11 gauge makes up the wire mesh part.

It’s thick enough for most dogs, but as I mentioned before, a large determined dog will probably not be stopped by any portable dog fence for RVing and camping.

The wire is covered in a thick e-coating that can be either black, blue, or pink. There’s also a version with a gold zinc finish you can get. The finish on the wire makes it rust resistant and helps it hold up against the elements.

Even with the weather coating, it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

There are 5 height options; 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches. The tallest option is advertised for dogs that are up to 30 inches tall.

No matter what height you get each panel is 24 inches wide. There are 8 panels included in a pack, and this version also comes with a dual latching door.

If you use it as a playpen your dog will have 16 sq. ft. of space, which is more like a kennel than a large play area.

There’s also an 8 panel pack available that doesn’t have a door. If you want more panels you can get the door and the non-door options together to make a bigger fenced area.

There are also individual panels for sale in the different height options (click to view on Amazon) .

An 8 pack of the smallest option weighs only 18 lbs and the tallest is just 32 lbs.

That’s actually very lightweight compared to some of the other portable dog fences in this review and if you travel a lot it’s a great choice.

Included with the panels are also ground stakes you can use to secure each panel for added security.

One of the unique things about the MidWest dog fences is they can be used with some of their other popular accessories.

Because they are made with the same materials you can connect the MidWest iCrate (click to view on Amazon) . It counts as another panel that increases the size of the playpen and gives your dog a second room.

If you set up the portable dog fence in a 2×2 panel square that’s 48 inches long and wide there’s an optional mesh sunshade (click to view on Amazon) you can get, or even a wire roof (click to view on Amazon) if your dog is a jumper.

Midwest Homes for Pets Exercise Pen Suncreen Top

The MidWest Portable Dog Fence is well built, very portable, and perfect for RVs and camping.

MidWest offers more accessories and additions for its foldable dog fence than any other company. You can use a combination of the different panel heights to make a fenced patio area outside your RV or even create a large portable kennel.

With so many options and a durable but lightweight build, this is one of the best portable dog fences available.

  • 5 Height Options
  • Multiple Color Options
  • Additional Covers & Panels Available
  • Works with MidWest iCrate
  • Included Ground Stakes

Lightweight

  • Only 8 or Single Panel Options
  • Thinner Wire Not Good For Larger Dogs

2. Yaheetech Indoor/Outdoor Dog Fence

The Yaheetech portable dog fence uses a sturdy design with a thick metal tube frame around each panel and a 10 gauge mesh steel wire that is painted for rust and weather resistance.

It’s one of the more heavy duty options in this review and perfect for RV parks and extended stay campers.

There are 3 height options; 24, 32, or 40 inches. Each panel is 31.5 inches wide no matter what height you get.

There are packs of 8, 16, 24, and 32 panels available. Each pack includes one panel that has a latching gate.

If you go with the 8 panel pack and set them up as a playpen your dog will have around 27 sq. ft. of space.

See Also:  6 Best Exterior RV Caulks For Camper Window, Molding & Trim

Because of the 31.5 inch wide panels, you get a lot more area coverage per panel but that also means more weight and they can be trickier to store in a camper if you get the taller options.

The 24 inches tall 8 panel option weighs around 31 lbs and the 40 inch tall option weighs around 44 lbs.

For 8 panels neither option is insanely heavy and it’s especially easy to store these in a truck bed if you have a travel trailer but it’s something to think about if you’re a weekend camper or a full-time RVer who travels a lot.

If you want a shade cover for this camping dog fence when it’s set up like a playpen you can get this universal cover for 32 inch wide panels ( click to view on Amazon ).

Pet Toy,Soft for Small Pet.

Some of the things I like about the Yaheetech Indoor/Outdoor Dog Fence for camping is the thick frame and heavy duty wire.

It’s going to be able to hold larger dogs better than the more lightweight options in this review and the weight will help it stay put better.

The weight could also be considered a downside if you are on the edge of your RV’s weight capacity but it’s something to consider.

  • Heavy Duty Frame & Wire
  • Optional Shade Cover
  • Wide Panels Cover More Area
  • Options With More Panels
  • Secure Panel to Panel Connection
  • Heavy & Less Portable
  • Only 3 Height Options
  • No Ground Stakes

3. Amazon Basics Foldable Dog Fence

Amazon Basics has its own portable dog fence available, but as the name states, it’s very basic.

The panels are made with thin steel wire that’s coated for protection against the elements and rust resistance. It uses the same size of wire for everything, which means the frame isn’t thicker like on the other RV dog fence options in this review.

The extra thin wire is a downside for large dog owners but an upside for smaller dog owners who are looking for a steel dog fence that’s lightweight and very portable.

There are 5 height options; 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches.

Even though there’s a tall option that’s technically for bigger dog’s I think it’s better for older calmer dogs who don’t get over excited and try to leave break out of fences or playpens.

Each panel is 24 inches wide and there are only 8 panel packs available. One pack will give your dog 16 sq. ft. of space when used as a playpen.

See Also:  Best Plastic Rugs & Mats For Outdoor, RV & Patio Use

The good news is they have gated and non-gated sets which means you could combine the two to get a large 16 or more panel portable dog fence.

The shortest 8 panel pack weighs only 16 lbs and the tallest only 32 lbs.

There are ground stakes included that should always be used since the panels are so light.

A good shade cover you can use when this is set up as an 8 panel playpen is the YGCase Universal Dog Playpen Mesh Cover (click to view on Amazon) .

Universal Octagonal Dog Playpen Top Cover, Provide Shade and Security...

So, what and who do I recommend the Amazon Basics Foldable Dog Fence for?

Because it’s so light it’s a great RV dog fence for small dog owners.

But the best use I can see for it is as a secondary dog fence for closing off the area underneath your RV. You can use a more heavy duty dog fence around the patio area and put this lighter one against your trailer.

  • Very Lightweight
  • Lots of Height Options
  • Most Portable Metal Option
  • Great for Fencing Gap Under RV
  • Thin Steel Wires
  • Too Flimsy For Large Dogs
  • Only Sold in 8 Panel Packs

4. Best Pet Portable Dog Kennel

The Best Pet portable dog kennel will be the hardest dog fence to transport but it’s the most secure and best option for big dogs. It’s also something you could use at home as well which is a plus.

Made with thick steel tubing and wire the Best Pet is very secure.

There are two height options 48 or 72 inches. The 48 inch version includes 8 panels, one of them has a gate, and the 72 inch has 12 panels.

The panels are 24 inches wide. That means the 8 panel version gives your dog around 16 sq. ft. and the 12 panel version around 36 sq. ft.

Both versions come with a tarp you can secure over the top when using it as a kennel/playpen.

The smallest version weighs 57 lbs and the largest 108 lbs.

That’s a lot of weight to take camping but if you live in an RV park most of the year and want something more secure than the others for outside your camper this is the best way to go.

While it’s heavy and durable I still don’t recommend this for big dogs who are not used to being in a kennel or behind a fence. Big dogs can break out of most portable dog fences.

The good news is you most likely won’t have to stake this to the ground for small and medium sized dogs.

The Best Pet Portable Dog Kennel is in this review for RV dog fences because it’s technically still portable and I wanted a good option for large dogs or a very secure choice for smaller dogs.

It can be set up as a fence or a kennel. The only downside to using it as a fence is you only have the option of getting 8 or 12 panels and there’s no non-gate option available.

  • Most Heavy Duty in Review
  • 72 inch (6 foot) Tall Option
  • Cover Included
  • Thick Metal Tube Frame
  • Best Choice For Large Dogs
  • Good for Home or RV Use
  • Not Easy to Transport
  • Time Consuming Set Up
  • Only 2 Size & Panel Options
  • No Non-Gated Sets

Small Dogs Only

I’d say 70% of the RVers I’ve seen have small dogs that are pretty easy to fence in.

The metal wire options are the most secure way to go but there are some fantastic very portable and lightweight options made with other materials as well.

I’ve included a plastic RV dog fence and a fabric playpen as well for campers who have small or very calm dogs that don’t require a heavy metal fence to stay contained.

5. IRIS USA Plastic Portable Dog Fence

Made in the USA the Iris plastic portable dog fence is something you can use both inside and outside your RV when camping.

It’s not for big dogs but for puppies and small pets it’s the perfect lightweight option for travel and camping.

Made with a molded polypropylene resin , this fence is extremely durable against water and weather and strong enough to hold small dogs.

There are 3 options available. Sets of 4 or 6 panels that are 24 inches tall, or a set of 8 panels that are 34 inches tall.

Each set comes with a panel that has a small gate that is secured via two twist latches.

The smallest set weighs only 16 lbs and the largest only 21.5 lbs.

Each panel is around 35 inches wide. That means the 4 panel version has about 9 sq. ft of space inside, the 6 panel about 18 sq. ft., and the 8 panel around 36 sq. ft.

The panels snap together and you could get more than one set to increase the length of the fence or size of the playpen.

There’s even a shade cover available for the 4 panel version made by Loobani (click to view on Amazon) .

LOOBANI Dog Playpen Mesh Fabric Top Cover, Provide Shaded Areas for...

On the bottom of each panel are rubber feet to help it stay in place. This feature is great for indoors but for outdoors you will need to get some U ground stakes (click to view on Amazon) to secure it in place.

The IRIS USA Plastic Portable Dog Fence is the most lightweight option in this review, but it’s only good for small dogs.

If you travel a lot and want something that can be set up and packed away quickly this is the RV dog fence for you.

  • Very Weather Resistant
  • Easy to Store
  • Great for Indoors
  • For Small Dogs Only
  • Must be staked to ground when used as fence.
  • Limited Size & Panel Number Options

6. Ruff ‘n Ruffus Portable Dog Playpen

If portable dog fences and playpens are too heavy and take up too much storage space in your RV then another option is to get a cloth playpen that folds up into a small case and weighs very little.

The Ruff’n Ruffus portable dog playpen cannot be turned into a fence so you won’t be able to use it to fence in your camper’s patio area.

What it is good for is letting your small dog or even cat spend some time outside without having to worry about them running away.

It’s also great to use as a large indoor kennel.

Made with thick and durable nylon fabric and metal wire reinforced mesh, it will be strong enough to hold most small dogs. The mesh is on every panel and even the roof to allow for great airflow.

The nylon fabric covers the top and bottom edges and also some of the roof for shade.

There’s a zippered door on one of the panels and you can also open the top.

The bottom is a durable fabric that will help keep your dog clean, but it also means they won’t be able to do their business while inside.

There are three size options available that all have 8 panels. The medium is 17 inches tall and 29 inches in diameter, the large is 23 inches tall and 36 inches in diameter, the extra large is 23.5 inches tall and 48 inches in diameter.

I recommend the largest size since that will give your dog the most space to enjoy but it all depends on what you are going to use it for and the kind of dog you have.

The portable playpen folds up easily and is stored in an included carry case. The smallest option weighs 2.4 lbs and the largest only 4.5 lbs.

Because it’s so lightweight you should definitely stake this down when using it outside and even weigh it down when inside.

I’ve seen videos of dogs using smaller versions of these like hamster wheels so be careful how you use them.

If you go with the Ruff ‘n Ruffus Portable Dog Playpen you are limited in what you can do with it but you get extreme portability.

It takes up hardly any space when folded down, it’s super fast to set up and pack away, and the extra large size is just as big as some of the portable dog fences in this review.

  • Super Portable
  • Quick Setup and Takedown
  • Keeps Dog Clean
  • Very Small When Folded
  • Fabric Floor Doesn’t Allow Dog to do its “business”
  • Can be Broken Out of by Determined Dog
  • Least Secure Option

What to Look for in a Portable Dog Fence

No matter what size of portable dog fence you want or need the weight is going to be a factor.

While they’re made to be lighter than permanent dog fences, the portable options can still weigh quite a bit. Especially if you get a lot of panels to cover the entire front area of your camper.

If you spend your winters in RV parks and the outdoor dog fence will be set up for months it’s going to be more worth it to get a lot of panels and something that’s more heavy duty.

If you are just going camping for a weekend a fence with fewer panels is going to be easier to set up and transport.

In this review, I’ve included the weights for the shortest and fewest panels and the tallest and most panels a company offers.

Compact Folded Size

Most companies offer lots of different height options for their dog fences but the panels are normally the same width no matter what height you get.

If you plan on storing the panels in one of the outside storage compartments of your RV make sure you measure the width as well as the height to make sure everything will fit.

Set Up Style

Portable dog fences and playpens are really the same thing.

When used as playpens the panels are hooked together in either a circular or square shape. It’s a great option for a quick set up but the space for your dog will be pretty small unless you get a ton of panels.

One way to maximize the size of your dog’s play area with the fewest amount of panels possible is to build the fence from your RV in the front patio area.

Many RVers use portable dog fences this way so they can spend time with their dogs inside the fenced in area. If you have a calm dog it’s also a way to let them outside in the morning without having to go out yourself.

If you go this route you will also need something to cut off the area under your camper. One way to do this is to get a shorter dog fence that matches the clearance of your RV.

Doing this still saves on weight and it makes the play area for your dog much larger.

See Also: Best Pop Up Screen Tents & Camping Shelters

Height vs Dog Size

The height of a portable dog fence or playpen depends on the size of your dog and its temperament.

Many dog breeds can jump pretty high in the air and if your dog is a jumper you are going to need a taller fence to keep them contained.

Most companies that make portable dog fences have height recommendations for different sizes of dogs, but only you know your dog’s capabilities.

In this review, there are shorter fences for small dogs and tall fences for big dogs. I’ve even included a portable kennel that has a tarp roof for dogs that are really good at jumping out of pens.

The kennel option is the heaviest and hardest to set up option. But if your dog requires it you might have to settle for that if you want to be able to let your dog outside without a leash when camping.

Best Overall Portable Dog Fence for Camping

MidWest Portable Dog Fence

A portable dog fence for camping needs to have the best of both worlds, durability, and the lightest weight possible.

MidWest’s RV dog fence checks both of those boxes. It’s made with fairly thick steel wire that will be able to stop most dogs from getting out, and it’s very lightweight.

All of the different options are nice as well and if you also get the iCrate you can make a pretty awesome dog fence outside your camper.

BestPet Playpen Camping Dog Fence

A camping dog fence can make your pet more at ease while you’re away from home. Your dog can roam freely within the pen while yet being near all the excitement without being restrained by a leash. Also, setup and takedown are simple.

What Is a Portable RV Dog Fence?

What Is a Portable RV Dog Fence?

You usually cannot have a substantial fence at your campsite, in contrast to your home. In reality, before reserving your site, make careful to confirm whether or not fencing is permitted at the campground. Some pet owners decide to use a mobile RV dog fence at their campsite when allowed to do so. There are many different kinds of fences in use, but they are all quite comparable. Almost all are shorter in height and simple to assemble and fold away for storage, making them ideal for use with small to medium-sized dog types.

Several of these RV dog fences are constructed in parts that are joined to completely enclose the desired space. Because of this, you may partially adapt them to the dimensions and form of your campground. The majority are also made of light, robust metal that maintains their strength while allowing for frequent setup, packing, and storage.

Types of rv fence for dogs, indoor pens.

There are many different types and materials for indoor dog playpens. This style of dog playpen is typically used by owners to protect their pets from danger and to prevent them from damaging the house. Maybe it functions well as a bed. For the first time, leaving your dog in your RV can be upsetting for them.

Why? Since when you go, they are unaware that you’re returning. Rather, all they are aware of is that they are imprisoned. As a result, if your dog believes they have been abandoned in a strange environment, such as your RV, it may do anything to return to you. If they experience separation anxiety at your home, this is particularly true.

Consider this: how could they possibly be aware that you are returning? Your devoted dog can attempt to rip the RV apart to escape as a result of the separation distress this causes. Your dog will feel more confident and protected in your RV or tent if they are in a familiar and comfortable environment.

They should have a room in their RV if they have one at home, such as a box or tiny pen. They might draw the conclusion that you will also return when they are in their sleeping area in your RV if they are aware that you return when they are in their simple temporary space at home.

When your pet(s) enter the house after it has rained, an indoor dog enclosure is a great spot to keep them contained. Alternatively, if you have sociable dogs, a sturdy dog playpen is a fantastic method to keep them off the floor while visitors come around. Put them straight into their exercise pen. These pens are sometimes used by persons who have cats.

Outdoor Portable Camping Fence

This kind of playpen ought to be water-resistant. And have one constructed from top-notch materials. A dog fence can be purchased to allow your dogs to relieve themselves outside of your RV or tent or to enable them to observe campground activities.

Several portable canine kennels for camping can be arranged in various ways. You can cut it into an octagon, a rectangle, or any other shape you require. Another benefit of your foldable metal dog fence is its simplicity of setup. If you install enough RV pet fencing, your pet can use it as a miniature backyard.

According to the dimensions of the enclosure you buy and the size of your dog, dogs can somewhat stretch their legs inside the dog fence. To enable your dog to take advantage of nature without being on a cable where they could get tangled up, discover dog enclosures for camping that are rustproof, offer them some reasonable square feet of space to use, and let them take advantage of the outdoors.

Puppy Training Pen

Whether you go camping or not, it’s a sensible decision to allow your puppy its own space. Here are a few possibilities:

1. Teach them where to go in the yard using a bottomless one.

2. While you’re not around, use it for containment.

You require one for the same reasons if you’re taking your puppy camping. They shouldn’t destroy your RV or poop all over it.

It’s additionally a good idea to provide your puppy with a familiar sleeping space, whether it be their playpen, extra bed, or a crate. Dogs generally prefer a routine schedule.

Are dog fences permitted in all campgrounds?

Every campground has specific guidelines regarding animals. Nevertheless, not every campground permits dog fences. Some people request that none of it be placed on the grass or ground next to your RV. Consider the campground’s regulations and guidelines before you arrive. Call the campground to find out if a dog fence or camp or is permitted if it is unclear.

Things to Check for in a Dog Fence When Camping

Let’s now examine three additional requirements for a dog fence while camping wet dogs out.

Simple Setup

No one is interested in investing extra time or effort to prepare their campsite. Seek a foldable fence or another dog fence that you can erect in no more than 10 minutes. Several of them fold flat and fit neatly into your trunk. Others may also suddenly appear.

Keeping things in storage when not in use

Obtain a dog fence for camping that packs up tightly and neatly for simple storage in your RV, car, or house. Prevent any large bars that will be difficult to pack. When making a dog-safe purchase, consider the available room in your RV or car and choose the correct size.

Which is the Best Portable Dog Fence for Camping?

There are a lot of portable dog fences for camping available. The choices have been reduced to the top seven possibilities.

How To Choose The Best Fence For Your Dog

There are several kinds of RV dog fences available because to the wide range of dog sizes, energy levels, and escape skills. There are a couple of things you should think about when purchasing a fence:

Let’s examine each in more detail, along with the questions you ought to be asking yourself.

Size of the enclosed space

This will probably be your primary deciding factor. The enclosed space must be large enough to provide your dog considerable freedom without overly encroaching on your campground.

Other people will completely enclose the space on one side of their RV, from front to back, using fencing. This allows the dog to have a lot of freedom while without obstructing your ability to roam about the place. When stored, this might, however, result in a big, bulky barrier that takes up a lot of space.

Smaller fences are simpler to assemble and store, but they might confine your dog to an extremely small area. This can be a problem if your dog is more energetic. The amount of room your dog will require to remain content and quiet will depend on how energetic they are.

The portable RV dog fence’s shape

There will be possibilities for both constructed and modular fences when purchasing a portable RV dog fence. While the flexible ones can be expanded upon and put together in many combinations, the structured versions will have a set size and shape.

The pen-style fences can indeed be round, square, or hexagonal and are easy to assemble. These might be different sizes, but they will keep your dog in that particular area. Some may be expanded all the way around your campground by joining portions together and molding them into the desired shape.

Height of the portable dog fence

Although this may not always be the case, the height of your dog will frequently decide the height of your fence. A well-mannered larger dog or an elderly dog who isn’t very energetic might be easily managed at a height better suited for smaller canines. In contrast, a little, energetic dog like a Jack Russell could need a tall fence to be safely contained.

Furthermore, keep in mind that the height will have an impact on how much space your fence will need to be stored while it’s not in use. Fence panels that are three feet tall will require a sizable quantity of storage space.

The weight of your RV dog fence will vary depending on its size and construction type. Fences made of plastic will typically weigh less than fences made of metal.

The weight of huge or tall fences can build up, making it difficult to move and set them up. Have into consideration that certain small, light fences may be too frail and susceptible to being knocked down by dogs or even the wind.

Metal and plastic are the two often chosen materials for dog fences. The majority of the alternatives are made of corrosion-resistant metal or metal with a corrosion-resistant coating. Metal may very well be heavier, but it’s also more likely to last longer.

You should buy a fence that can resist being constantly packed and stored as well as damp weather.

DIY Portable RV Dog Fence

DIY Portable RV Dog Fence

You could make your personal RV dog fence, as you can with most things. Yet, the cost of purchasing one causes the majority of individuals to reconsider doing it themselves. You should sum up your resources and take into account your time since portable dog fences can be obtained for a very low cost. Constructing your own fence might be worthwhile if it will be up for a lengthy period of time.

Among the supplies used to build fences at home are:

Wood stakes

Chicken wire

Constructing a fence is not really difficult; the important thing is to make sure it can be quickly assembled and disassembled. It’s also important to think about durability—can your dog gnaw the materials? Will it endure prolonged rain and damp weather? Will the relationships endure?

Lastly, components must withstand any damage from other stored things and be simple to store. Moreover, the weight must be maintained to a manageable level to make movement easier.

Both of you are happier when your furry friend goes camping with you. Dogs often dislike being restrained, therefore the fences also make them happier. You’ll be pleased as well if you’re not dependent on a leash that causes your camping chairs to turn over.

RV dog fences make logical sense for dog owners because they are reasonably priced and not too inconvenient. Using such a leash for one weekend is not a big concern if you don’t camp frequently. If you go camping frequently or for extended periods of time, getting a transportable RV dog fence will be a part of your setup, plus your dog will appreciate it.

Best RV Dog Fence: Portable Solutions for Pet Safety

Embarking on an RV adventure with your pet brings joy and companionship, but it also demands attention to their safety. The constantly changing environments of RV travel can pose risks to pets, making their security a paramount concern. A portable RV dog fence emerges as an essential solution, offering a safe, enclosed space for your dog to enjoy the outdoors without the dangers of wandering off.

These fences are not only crucial for safety; they also provide peace of mind for pet owners. Easy to transport and set up, they adapt to various landscapes and settings, ensuring your pet has a secure, familiar area at each stop. A portable RV dog fence is thus an indispensable tool for responsible pet owners, enhancing the RV experience by keeping your furry companion safely by your side.

Understanding the Need for a Dog Fence in RV Travel

Traveling with pets in an RV can be a delightful experience, but it comes with its own set of challenges that require thoughtful preparation and understanding. The confined space of an RV, combined with the ever-changing locations and stimuli, can be overwhelming for dogs. These challenges underscore the need for a dog fence during RV travel.

Navigating the Confines and Complexities of RV Travel with Pets

  • Limited Space: RVs offer limited space, which can restrict a dog's movement and exercise needs.
  • Unfamiliar Surroundings: Constantly changing environments can cause anxiety and stress in pets.
  • Distractions and Dangers: New smells, sounds, and sights at different campsites can be distracting or even frightening for dogs, leading to unpredictable behavior.

Risks of Not Having a Secure Area

  • Safety Hazards: Without a secure area, dogs are at risk of running off, potentially encountering traffic, wildlife, or other hazards.
  • Lost Pets: The risk of pets getting lost increases in unfamiliar and unenclosed areas.
  • Campsite Etiquette: Most campsites have rules about pet containment and leash laws, and failing to comply can lead to fines or being asked to leave.

A portable dog fence for RV travel addresses these challenges by providing a designated, secure area for your dog. It allows pets to explore and relax in a controlled environment, reducing anxiety and the risk of accidents or escape attempts. The fence acts as a familiar boundary, creating a sense of home wherever you park, thus helping your pet to adapt more easily to the changing surroundings. In essence, a dog fence in RV travel is not just a convenience; it's a critical component for the safety and well-being of your traveling canine companion.

Types of RV Dog Fences

When traveling with your furry friend in an RV, choosing the right type of dog fence is crucial for their safety and your peace of mind. RV dog fences come in various types, each with its own set of features and benefits. Understanding these differences is key to selecting the best option for your pet's needs.

1. Portable vs. Permanent Solutions

  • Portable Dog Fences: These are ideal for RV travel due to their flexibility and ease of assembly. They can be quickly set up and taken down, making them perfect for temporary stops. Portable fences are lightweight, compact when folded, and can be adjusted to fit different spaces.
  • Permanent Dog Fences: Less common in RV travel, these are more suitable for those who stay in one location for extended periods. They require a more involved installation and are not meant to be moved frequently.

Understanding the Need for a Dog Fence in RV Travel

2. Materials Used

  • Metal Fences: Durable and sturdy, metal fences are a popular choice. They often come in panels and can withstand the wear and tear of travel. However, they can be heavier and may require more storage space.
  • Plastic Fences: These are lighter and easier to transport than metal options. Plastic fences are less durable but offer more flexibility in terms of design and color.
  • Fabric Fences: The lightest option, fabric fences are easy to carry and set up. They are suitable for smaller, less active dogs but may not withstand the strength of larger breeds.

3. Size and Height Variations

  • Size: The size of the fence depends on the available space and the size of your dog. Larger breeds require more space to move around comfortably.
  • Height: The height of the fence should be based on your dog's size and jumping ability. Taller fences are recommended for larger or more active dogs to prevent them from jumping over.

When selecting an RV dog fence, consider your travel style, the size and activity level of your dog, and the material that best suits your needs. Whether you choose a portable or permanent solution, the right dog fence will provide a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for your pet during your RV adventures.

Key Features to Consider When Choosing an RV Dog Fence

Selecting the right RV dog fence requires careful consideration of several key features. These features not only ensure the safety and comfort of your pet but also contribute to a hassle-free travel experience for you. Here are the essential factors to consider:

1. Durability and Stability

  • Material Strength: Choose a fence made from materials that can withstand outdoor elements and the energy of your dog. Metal fences offer robustness, while high-quality plastic can provide a good balance of durability and weight.
  • Stability in Various Terrains: Ensure the fence remains stable on different types of ground, from grassy areas to uneven surfaces.
  • Weather Resistance: The fence should be capable of withstanding various weather conditions like wind, rain, and sun exposure without deteriorating quickly.

2. Ease of Assembly and Disassembly

  • Simple Setup: Look for fences that can be easily assembled and disassembled, as this is crucial for frequent travelers. The less time and effort it takes to set up, the more time you have to enjoy your destination.
  • Tool-Free Assembly: Preferably, the fence should not require any special tools for setup, making it more convenient to use anywhere.

Understanding the Need for a Dog Fence in RV Travel

3. Portability and Storage

  • Lightweight Design: A lighter fence is easier to move and reposition, important for regular adjustments.
  • Compact Storage: The fence should fold or disassemble into a compact form for convenient storage in your RV, without taking up too much space.

4. Safety Features

  • Smooth Edges and Secure Latches: To prevent injury, the fence should have smooth edges and corners. Secure latches and locks are essential to ensure that your pet can't open the fence and escape.
  • Visibility: Consider fences that allow you to keep an eye on your pet from a distance, ensuring they are safe at all times.

By prioritizing these key features, you can choose an RV dog fence that not only secures your pet effectively but also adds convenience and ease to your travel adventures, making for memorable and worry-free trips with your furry companion.

These aspects revolve around effective monitoring, weather preparedness, and providing adequate shelter.

1. Monitoring and Supervision

  • Regular Checks: Even with a secure fence, it's important to regularly check on your pet to ensure they're safe and comfortable. This is crucial in new environments where pets might react unexpectedly.
  • Supervision: Always supervise your pet when they're in the fenced area, especially in busy or unfamiliar campgrounds. This helps prevent any unexpected interactions with wildlife, other pets, or people.

Fi Dog Collar: A High-Tech Alternative

2. Dealing with Weather Conditions

  • Wind and Rain: Ensure your fence is sturdy enough to withstand windy conditions and provide a waterproof cover or area within the fence during rain. This will keep your pet dry and secure.
  • Temperature Extremes: Be mindful of temperature changes. In hot weather, ensure there's enough ventilation and shade. In colder conditions, provide warm bedding or a sheltered area within the fence.

3. Incorporating Shade and Shelter Options

  • Portable Canopies or Umbrellas: These can be set up over or near the fenced area to provide shade on sunny days, keeping your pet cool and protected from direct sunlight.
  • Shelter for Comfort: Consider placing a dog house or a comfortable crate within the fenced area, offering a safe and cozy retreat for your dog.
  • Adaptable Solutions: Look for fences that can integrate or attach to shelter solutions, providing a seamless and comfortable environment for your pet.

While a dog fence is an essential tool for your pet's safety during RV trips, it's just a part of a broader approach. Effective monitoring, weather preparedness, and providing adequate shelter and comfort are key to ensuring your pet's safety and happiness on the road. These additional safety considerations help create a secure and enjoyable outdoor experience for both you and your pet during your RV adventures.

This security is essential, given the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of RV travel.

However, the responsibility of pet ownership extends beyond just providing a physical barrier. It encompasses monitoring your pet's well-being, adapting to different weather conditions, and ensuring they have access to shade and shelter. These practices reflect a holistic approach to pet care, emphasizing not just physical safety but also the overall comfort and happiness of our pets .

We encourage all RV travelers with pets to prioritize these aspects of pet care. Responsible and safe pet travel ensures that the journey is enjoyable and memorable for both you and your pet. • The best type of dog fence for RV travel is usually a portable one, as it offers flexibility, ease of assembly, and can adapt to various locations. Choose materials like metal or high-quality plastic for durability. The size and height should be appropriate for your dog's breed and activity level.
  • Regularly check and maintain the fence for stability and damage. Always supervise your dog when they are in the fenced area, especially in new environments. Consider additional safety features like smooth edges and secure latches.
  • Ensure the fence is set up on a flat surface for stability. If the ground is soft, use stakes or anchors to secure the fence. In windy conditions, reinforce the fence with additional support.
  • Many portable dog fences are designed to be weather-resistant, but it’s important to choose a fence with materials suitable for the climate you'll be traveling in. In extreme weather, it’s safer to bring your dog inside the RV.
  • The size of the fenced area should be large enough for your dog to move around comfortably. Larger breeds or more active dogs will require more space.
  • Yes, alternatives like the Fi dog collar offer GPS tracking and geofencing capabilities, which can be a good supplement or alternative to physical fences, especially in areas where setting up a fence is not feasible.
  • Start with short training sessions inside the fence, using positive reinforcement. Gradually increase the time they spend in the fenced area. Consistency is key in helping your dog understand the boundaries.
  • Provide comfort items like toys or a blanket with familiar scents. Gradually acclimatize your dog to the fenced area, and avoid leaving them alone for extended periods initially. If anxiety persists, consult with a veterinarian or a professional trainer.

Accessories

At first, you should look out for the structure and build of the dog fence. It should be durable enough to withstand not only your pet’s activities but also the weather while camping.

Look out for the construction of the dog fence. Does it come with a door or not? Some dog fences feature metal hinges, which can be manipulated into different shapes while others offer door openings.

Make sure to test the dog fence or at least make sure it won’t topple over with your pet’s weight! If your dog throws itself against the walls of the fence, make sure it’s of durable material.

You don’t want any bends or developing weak spots. Additionally, make sure the frame is rain resistant to prevent rusting, which might affect your pet.

Since these portable fences are designed to be, erm... portable, you don’t want to wrestle with their weight. It should be lightweight but enough to withstand your pet and to be easily transported from one location to another. A metal fence might be considerably heavier but more durable than other fences. Similarly, the size also plays a role. The greater the size, the more the weight and vice versa.

What Are The Benefits of Portable Dog Fences?

By investing in a great camping dog fence, you can enjoy the following benefits:

Transportability

The most important feature of a portable dog fence is its portability. As the name suggests, portable dog fences can be transported or moved from one location to another with ease. These act as a security perimeter, which you can set up while traveling or camping expeditions. This lacks in case of permanent fences.

Portable dog fences are usually designed to withstand harsh weather. Since they are designed for outdoor purposes too, they are usually coated with a rust-resistant finish for longer durability. Furthermore, their building material is quite sturdy, which holds up well against various weather conditions.

Many options run $200 or more. Generally, the more you pay, the better the quality. Models in the low end of this price range are durable and easy to assemble. As you get to the higher end of this price range, you start to see some awesome features, like the ability to combine multiple kits or customize the size and shape of your setup.

Best Portable Dog Fence For Camping and RVs in 2024

(Camp Addict does NOT accept payment from any company to review or endorse their products.)

By Kelly Beasley

You love your pets, don't you?

They become part of our family. Heck, they might be your only family.

It's no surprise that you want them to  come along with you  for the adventure when you go camping.

At most public or private campsites, rules are in place about dog restraints.

Often, they are not permitted to be left outside on a tether. In such cases, a portable dog fence for RV camping is handy.

A large camping dog fence or small pet playpen accommodates almost any breed or size. Remember, even the best portable dog fence is  no substitute  for proper walking.

Guide To Camping Dog Pens

A small or large exercise pen lets your dog or cat enjoy the outdoors with you.

It can also make the chore of potty time easier because you can let them out in the playpen area to relieve themselves.

Why An RV Pet Fence?

Three possible reasons:

  • Containment/ sleeping area

Rest assured that you cannot let your dog roam free when you are at an official campsite.

This is, of course, for the safety of your dog and the safety and comfort of other dogs and people in the campground.

Therefore, rules are in place. You must keep your dog contained in campgrounds, be it on a leash or in a portable dog playpen or a fenced-in area.

If you are  boondocking , you can have dogs off-leash. But it should still always be watched by you and UNDER YOUR CONTROL 100% of the time.

No, there's no getting out to pee on that tire over there...

These durable RV dog fences can also be used at home. Use it for various things. You can teach your dog to go potty in a specific yard area.

Or use it indoors as a place for your dog to sleep, or to contain them when guests come over, etc.

Types Of RV Fence For Dogs

Indoor pens.

Indoor doggie playpens come in many forms and materials.

People usually use this type of playpen for dogs to keep their pet safe from harm, and it can keep them from destroying the house. Or it makes a good sleeping place.

Leaving your dog in your RV for the first time can be traumatic for them.

Because they don't know that you're coming back when you leave. Instead, all they know is they are stuck in a cage.

So your pup might do anything to get back to you if they think they have been abandoned in a foreign place, i.e., your RV. This is especially true if they have separation anxiety at your house.

Think about it- how can they possibly know you are coming back?

This creates separation anxiety, and your loyal dog could try tearing the RV apart to get out.

Having a place your dog knows and is comfortable will help them feel safe and secure in your RV or tent.

If they have a space at home, like a crate or small pen, they should also have it in your RV.

If they know that you come back when they are in their little personal space at home, they could connect that you will also come back when they are in their bed area in your RV.

Other Good Uses

An indoor dog area is also an excellent place to contain your pet(s) when they come inside after rain.

Or, if you have gregarious dogs, a durable playpen for dogs is a good way to keep them out from underfoot when guests visit.

Simply put them in their exercise pen.

Some people also use these pens for their cats.

Outdoor Portable Camping Fence

This type of playpen should be waterproof. And get one made with high-quality materials.

You can get a dog fence to let your dogs do their business outside your RV or tent, or it can allow them to watch the activity in the campground.

Some portable dog kennels for camping can be changed into different configurations.

You can shape it as an octagon, rectangle, or whatever you need.

Easy assembly is another bonus for your foldable metal dog fencing to have. If you get enough RV pet fencing, it's like a tiny backyard for your pet to use.

Fido can stretch their legs in the dog fence a little, depending on the size of the enclosure you purchase as well as the size of your dog.

Just find dog enclosures for camping that are rustproof, gives your dog some decent square feet of space to use, and allows them to enjoy the outdoors without being on a cable where they can get all tangled up.

Puppy Training Pen

If you get a puppy, camping or not, it's a good idea to give them an area of their own.

Here are a couple of options:

1. Use a bottomless one to teach them where to go in the yard.

2. Use it for containment when you're away.

If you are taking your puppy on a camping trip, you need one for the same purposes.

You don't want them to poop all over or tear up your RV.

Having a place to sleep familiar to your puppy is also a good idea, whether it's your puppy's playpen or another bed or crate.

In general, dogs like having a regular schedule.

Training Your Dog To Like Their New Camping Fence Area

You cannot just buy a portable pet playpen or a crate for your dog, stick them inside, walk away, and expect them to be happy there.

For all they know, they just got stuck inside a box and will never get out. They don't innately know they aren't stuck in a life-threatening situation and shouldn't try to escape.

Never mind me. Just doing my thing.

To them, they will die if they don't escape.

Survival instinct is healthy and a natural reaction to being stuck in a small space. Introduce them to your dog enclosure for camping slowly and use positive reinforcement.

Watch this great video on how to get your pet to love their new little space.

How To Choose The Right Portable Pet Playpen For Your Pet

Now that you know the uses camping dog fencing might be good for, it's time to decide how exactly you will be using your dog camping pen.

  • Whether you need a door or not
  • How narrow must the fence grating be
  • Do you need stakes?

Let's discover why you may or may not want some of these features for your RV pet enclosure.

Camping Pet Fence Material

This is a significant factor.

Does your pup chew to get out of a crate-type environment? Will it be an inside or an outside setup?

If you have a chewer, don't get a soft-sided playpen. Yours should be very durable and escape-proof.

If using it outside, you need it to be a waterproof material. Here are some common types of materials:

Plastic RV Dog Fencing:  Good for outdoor use as it won't rust.

Lasts a long time. Dogs may be able to chew through if it's a big dog.

These pens are usually good about not scratching floors.

Metal RV Dog Pen:  This is the most durable type of portable RV fence.

If you have a dog who chews, this is perfect.

Look for a metal fence that has been coated to protect against rusting for outdoor use.

Polyester and Mesh Enclosures:  Camping pet enclosures that are made from materials are light and easy to store.

The bottoms of some are waterproof, so if your pet has an accident, it stays contained.

This material is destructible and will be useless if you have a chewer.

If you have a dog that likes to jump, these work well because some come with a zippered top.

Most dog pens aren't huge.

You COULD get more panels for some models to make a larger pen, but your space is probably limited if you are in a campground.

Consider whether you want your pet contained by the gates the second he goes out the door or if you want it standing on its own.

You may need more panels if you want to make a fence surrounding your door.

If you have large dogs, an RV portable pet fence with just four panels won't be large enough.

To Door Or Not To Door?

Some RV pet fences have a door option. Can you step fully over the fencing?

If not, consider getting the door option if there is one.

Happy dog... happy dog... happy dog...happy dog...

Where will you store the RV fencing for dogs while you are on the road?

Some people store their camping dog fences in their tow vehicles.

Others keep it inside their RV or camper until they reach their destination, immediately setting up 'shop' for their pup upon arrival.

Storage probably isn't a huge factor unless you're dog owners toting Great Danes around with you, LOL!

Gonna need a bigger crate...

Using Your Portable Dog Fence For Camping

Keep in mind a few things while you are using your playpen outdoors.

First, it's not a good idea to put your babies out in the outdoor dog fence, then go inside and take a nap.

A lot of bad could happen. Your pup could be stolen, a bird of prey could get them, kids might do something mean to them, feed them something they can't eat, they might bite someone reaching in, etc.

We're not out to scare you here. We're just being honest. These are just a few things that could happen.

Provide blankets and toys if you are using the portable RV dog fence indoors for a place to play and/or rest.

If you have a puppy or a dog that is puppy pad trained, you CAN put a pad in the dog fence area, but only if it is large enough for them to get away from it.

If you force them to 'go' and then have to stay near it, it may dampen their instinct to not go in their bed area, making it much harder to potty train.

Below the summary, we feature the best dog pens we know about.

For dog owners, bringing pets along while camping is a rich, rewarding experience.

Naturally, our pets are part of our family, so it's natural to want to bring them along.

Therefore, having a camping pen for dogs or cats is an important part of bringing pets.

Finally, it is a great idea to keep them safe with an outdoor camping dog play area, safe from other dogs. It keeps the leash at bay until it's time for their daily walk.

Walk me! Even a big yard gets boring after only a few days...

Portable dog pens for camping provide a few options for containment. Rest, play, or a restroom break.

Get a portable pet fence for camping, and camp with them for as long as possible!

Now let's look at the best playpen and why we think that they are a good bet.

The Best Dog Camping Fencing Reviewed

There are a few different types of dog pens for RVers out there.

Picking a specific type of material will greatly depend on your pet's personality when in an enclosed space.

If you have small dogs, you may need a roof to protect them from birds of prey.

Metal playpens can be expanded, while a soft-sided enclosure is chewable. Take these things into consideration while shopping to keep your dog safe.

No tools are needed to assemble this simple yet effective pet camping fencing with a roof.

This metal crate will keep your pets safe and contained while still allowing them room to move around.

Sizes and Accessories

These RV pet fences come in three sizes. Remember that the larger pen you get, the more room it will take and the heavier it is.

The topper is white on one side and dark on the other. This way, you can put the white showing up in summer for a cooler pen, dark facing up in the winter to collect heat.

Additionally, they offer an accessory sun shade that attaches to the side of the pen.

They offer accessories such as ground stakes, bowls that attach to the pen, and a tote bag for the smaller gazebos.

This setup can be used for potty time, as a little play area, or as an indoor containment area.

Even though portable camping pet fencing is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, we do not recommend leaving them outside in a pen while you are away. Additionally, most campgrounds don't allow this practice.

Advantek Pet Gazebo Features and Specs:

  • Weight: depends on size purchased- check Amazon
  • Height: depends on size purchased- check Amazon
  • Comes with 8 panels. 6 regular, one gate, and one access panel
  • Access panel is great for a quick pet or to change out food/water
  • Folds down for storage in your RV
  • Bag available for storage for smaller gazebos

  • 1-year: Nylon connectors, roof support hub, cap, arms, ball ties

Your dog can be kept happy and safe when enclosed (temporarily) inside a playpen while you are camping.

They can do their business inside the portable fence or just use it as a place they can relax outside while you are at the campground.

If you have big dogs, using a camper dog fence gives you a little more foot room in your RV. (But please provide them with enough space in the playpen to be happy and able to move around themselves.)

There's nothing better than bringing your furry friends camping with you instead of dropping them off at a kennel.

Get the best portable dog fence for their needs and enjoy your camping trip.

They want to be with you, too!

Kelly was a co-founder of CampAddict.com and ran the business until April of 2024 when she sold the business to Schwalm Inc. For over 7 years she fully immersed herself in the RV lifestyle, particularly enjoying boondocking. In December 2020, she transitioned into a #vanlife setup. Her goal was to empower others to embrace RVing confidently, equipped with the knowledge for unforgettable adventures. She believed RV knowledge enhanced that freedom and flexibility of the open road.

Hi Kelly, I love animals and started to collect them while I was young. I have had lots of farm animals as well as exotics. I recommend doing so only if you have a good pet sitter or farm hand. Otherwise you will loose your ability to just take off when you want. Happy camping, Lauren

Yep, the struggle is real. They are two of the things I love most in life, travel and animals, and I either have to figure out how to have an EXTREMELY RELIABLE and knowledgeable person to watch them while I’m away, or I must sacrifice my ability to travel. I hope you have someone so you can get away here and there. Thanks for the comment!

Hi, we often go for picnics with our 2 little dachshunds. We usually just sit at the back of our car with our picnic chairs. Is there any kind of pen that we can put around the car to keep the dogs penned in but still beside us? I know this sounds a bit complicated but hopefully you know what I mean!????

Doxies!!! I’ll bet they are cute. So I apologize, but I am not exactly sure what you mean. So you sit in picnic chairs behind the car? Wouldn’t a regular wire pen work? Do you want it to enclose the car, or just your dogs and yourselves? Thanks.

Hi, Would like to add a particular product to the the playpens you considered. We discovered a pet “gazebo” from Advantek that comes in sizes from 3′ all the way to 8′. This gazebo is a great compromise between a dog crate and the soft-sided playpens. It is easily assembled and disassembled, has a roof for shade and protection from the elements, and it has a door that allows for easy access. And yes, it can even be used for cats (with minor modifications at the base to discourage sneaking out)! We actually have 2 gazebos – the small, and the large. The large stays in our backyard (when we aren’t RVing), set up under a shady tree. It is the perfect place to contain a pet when gates have to be kept open, or we have guests over who aren’t dog people (rare, but it HAS happened). The small gazebo is set up inside the house, and is used whenever a dog needs to be contained in a smaller space, but still has space to get up, move around a little, have a snack, etc. Perfect size for when one of our dogs had surgery, and had to have her movement severely restricted. We purchased the large gazebo at a farm supply place (Big R), and the small one at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Have been very pleased with both of them; the quality is good, and both have been put up and taken apart many times with no problems. You can even get a tote bag for the gazebo, which is what we use when we are RVing. Just another possibility for those looking for a portable solution to safely contain their pet when RVing!

Thank you for the recommendation! We didn’t find much out there when we did this page, so we didn’t offer many choices.

I do like that it has a top on it.

We will look into it and may even add it to this page. Thanks again! Happy to hear you like yours.

(And happy to hear you don’t have many ‘non-dog people’ friends, lol!! ????)

Excellent article and very informative! I am looking for a soft-sided pop-up style (or other easily portable) play pen/play yard for my little 4 pound Chihuahua. He goes everywhere with me, but there are times I do have to leave him, sometimes at a friend or family member’s house. When we do go camping, he goes along. He has a travel backpack that I usually carry him in, but have been looking for something bigger that I can bring with me. I hate to leave him too long just in his backpack. A google search of the best portable/travel play yards brought your site up, and I’m so happy it did!

That’s great, we are happy you found our site! Are you going to get a pen for your chi then? I’m sure he will be happier in it than being a long time in the backpack. Hope you get to use it often because that means you are camping a lot. Enjoy!

Best Portable Dog Fence For Camping And RV (2023)

We tested 6 products and found the TOOCA RV Outdoor Dog Fence to be the best portable dog fence for camping and RVing.

Camping with rambunctious dogs can be a real challenge, as any adventurous pet owner can attest. Even the most well-behaved pooches can be tempted to ignore your commands when they have the whole wide world to distract them. That’s why it’s best to keep them under control when they’re not confined to the RV.

An RV dog fence is the ideal solution. Your pet’s movements won’t be restricted as they would with a leash or tie-out, but they’ll still be contained in a safe area. This will keep them from chasing passersby, squirrels, birds, or whatever other distractions might happen by.

In our guide, you’ll learn how a dog fence for camping can enhance your outdoor experience. If your pet could talk, she would surely agree.

1. TOOCA RV Outdoor Dog Fence – Best Overall 2. Nova Microdermabrasion RV Kennel Fence – Best for Fast Setup 3. YAHEETECH RV Dog Exercise Fence – Best for Frequent Use 4. BestPet RV Portable Dog Fence – Best Sizing Options 5. Giantex Portable Dog Play Pen – Best for Large Dogs 6. MidWest Homes for Pets MaxLock Portable Exercise Pen – Best Security

The TOOCA fence earns top marks for several reasons. It’s well-constructed, with an automatic door locking device to help keep Fido from escaping. In addition to being a useful camping resource, it can be used indoors when you return home. The fence is also very easy to assemble, so you can start enjoying your favorite outdoor activities that much sooner.

Keep reading to find out more about the TOOCA portable dog fence and how it climbed its way to the top of our list.

Table of Contents

Our Top Pick

Best portable dog fence for camping: product review guide, 1. tooca rv outdoor dog fence—best overall.

The automatic locking device is reason enough to consider the TOOCA model. Your dog won’t be able to escape from pushing against the door, which is the main reason most people consider using a dog fence for camping in the first place. The mechanism works remarkably well, even with large or energetic dogs.

The fencing uses iron tubing and thick outer edging to keep the structure stable when it’s in use. Combined with the lock feature, this makes the TOOCA RV dog fence one of the safest ones we tested.

Its uses aren’t limited to camping and RVing, either. The unit could also in handy if you need to confine the dog to a designated indoor area, whether you’re at home or visiting guests. The lower portion of the fencing features a rubber gasket, so there’s no need to worry about scratching the floors.

The product’s sole drawback is the fact that it doesn’t fold up easily for storage. While it’s easy enough to assemble, it might not be the best choice if your camper is on the smaller side.

  • Sturdy materials
  • Locking mechanism
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
  • Fast, easy assembly
  • Large and bulky when broken down for storage

2. Nova Microdermabrasion Kennel Fence—Best For Fast Setup

You can put this unit together without using any tools. It can be assembled in minutes, which makes it extremely appealing to busy RVers who need to keep the dogs amused while they set up camp.

The fencing is exceptionally durable, too, with a coated finish that makes it impervious to rust. That means you can expect to use it for many years, even if you’re a full-timer.

The panels are designed to allow for many different configurations, so it’s suitable for rugged terrain. Rubber feet and secure metal stakes ensure that the unit will remain in place while it’s in use, and rounded edges help to protect your dog from cutting himself on the fencing.

  • Can be set up in minutes
  • Metal stakes offer security
  • Versatile construction
  • Suitable for pigs, chickens, and other animals
  • Some shipping issues reported

3. YAHEETECH Dog Exercise Fence—Best For Frequent Use

The YAHEETECH is constructed of sturdy iron, which holds up well over years of frequent use. Despite its heft and durability, it also folds up easily for storage and transport. Even smaller rigs should be able to accommodate this structure.

The door offers easy access as well as a lock, so the fencing remains fully secure when the dogs are inside. Additionally, you can choose from three different sizes and four panel amounts to create an RV dog fence that will suit your individual needs.

Like the TOOCA model, this one can be used both inside and out. Be forewarned, however, that the company can be lax in the packaging and shipping department. Make sure all the parts are included before you take this product on the road.

  • Locking door offers security and quick access to the pen
  • Folds up easily
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Packages often arrive with parts missing

4. BestPet RV Portable Dog Fence—Best Sizing Options

The collapsible design of the BestPet makes it the ideal fit for the RVing lifestyle. It’s also very lightweight, so moving it from place to place should be a snap.

The unit comes with simple and straightforward assembly instructions as well, so setup is quick. Its heavy-duty construction helps it stay in place without toppling over, although the quality wire contributes to a higher-than-average price tag.

The best aspect of the BestPet is the sheer number of configuration options. You can choose from 6 different sizes, making it easy to construct fencing that suits your needs.

  • Concise, readable instructions
  • 6 sizing options
  • Lightweight yet durable
  • High price point

5. Giantex Portable Dog Play Pen—Best For Large Dogs

If you have a big dog (or even more than one), the 48-inch version of the Giantex pen might be your best bet. It also comes in a 40-inch model, which is still suitable for most larger breeds.

The fencing offers a heavy-duty metal construction that helps to keep active dogs contained. It’s weather-resistant and rustproof, so you can take it on extended vacations without worrying about damage from the elements.

This pen also features rounded edges similar to the ones on the Nova model, helping to keep Fido from scraping himself on the metal. The door has a double lock that prevents even the most persistent pooch from escaping the enclosure.

Be forewarned that this is the priciest model listed here. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether its positive attributes are worth the cost.

  • Great for large breed dogs
  • Durable build
  • Double locks
  • 30-day return policy
  • Expensive model
  • Tall sides make it hard for a single person to maneuver

6. MidWest Homes for Pets MaxLock Portable Exercise Pen—Best Security

Most dogs are naturally curious, but some have an unquenchable zest for life that makes them difficult to contain. The MidWest Homes MaxLock model provides a useful solution to this problem.

The double-latch door keeps dogs from thrusting their way to freedom, and the material is solid and reliable. It also features a black E-coat finish that helps to preserve the integrity of the fencing throughout years of use. A 1-year warranty is offered with every purchase, but it should last much longer than that.

This is also one of the most affordable units listed here. If you’re on a budget, we would strongly recommend this dog fence.

  • Very secure
  • Affordable price point
  • 4 color options
  • Built to last
  • Not suitable for indoor use

Buying Guide

In this section, we’ll talk about the features you should look for in an RV dog fence, along with other important considerations.

Key Features

Find a model that fits within your chosen budget. These structures are available in a range of sizes and styles, so it should be easy to find one that you can afford. As a general rule, smaller fences are less expensive than larger ones, but it’s possible to find good deals on fences of any size.

If the structure isn’t large enough to contain your pet, it isn’t worth the money. Make sure to buy the right size. Fortunately, many companies offer a variety of sizing and configuration options to make your decision easier.

Don’t forget to take height into account. The last thing you want is to invest in a fence only to find that your pet can jump right over it. You’ll also need to consider whether or not the unit will fit inside your rig when it’s packed down for storage and transport.

Construction

Heavy-duty material is the key to a successful dog fence for camping. You want to buy an enclosure that will safely contain your pet (or pets) for many seasons to come. It’s even better if the exterior has been treated with a weather-resistant or rustproof coating.

Configuration

Think about your dog’s personality. Does he love to dig? Is he uncomfortable in confined areas? You can buy a structure that has a solid floor to discourage digging, which could keep him from worming his way out through the bottom. If he doesn’t like the sensation of being shut in, look for an open enclosure that will allow him to enjoy the sights and sounds of the wilderness.

The door is one of the most vital aspects of an RV dog fence. It provides you with a way to retrieve your pet when it’s time to let her out, but it can also offer an effective means of escape if the unit is of lesser quality.

Be forewarned that many fences have narrow doors that won’t allow your pet to enter and exit the enclosure with you by her side. That’s why it’s a good idea to familiarize them with the concept before taking them along on a camping trip. Otherwise, you mind end up lugging this expensive and bulky equipment along for no reason.

Ease of Assembly

Some models contain instructions that are confusing and difficult to follow. During your research, look for reviews that mention easy-to-read instructions. When it comes time to set up the unit, you’ll be glad you planned ahead. You can also purchase a pre-assembled unit, but these can be problematic when you’re traveling in a camper.

Other Considerations

Why buy a dog fence.

These structures will keep your dog from wandering off and bothering other campers and/or wildlife when you’re parked for the night. Because they can be folded down for transport, they won’t take up too much room in your rig. If you love having your dog with you when you travel, this could be an excellent investment.

Is there more than one type of RV dog fence?

Yes. Some of the units we’ve listed can be used both indoors and outdoors, as we’ve indicated. The indoor models will contain your pet within a confined area within the camper, keeping her from damaging the furniture or carpeting. They’re also suitable for home use.

Others are meant for outdoor use only. They’ll keep your hound from running away when you’re enjoying the campsite. This will benefit both you and your dog, as well as any nearby campers.

Some smaller models are meant only for puppy training, and are not covered on our list. They’re designed to show puppies where they should go to relieve themselves. These are too small for full-grown dogs and should be considered only if you have a new puppy that isn’t housebroken yet.

Isn’t it impractical to pack a huge structure like that in the camper?

Not if you buy the right model. Most of the models on our list will fold down to make transport easier. Many of them are also very lightweight, so a single person can erect and deconstruct the pen without outside help.

In Conclusion

The TOOCA model is the best portable dog fence we tested. Although it doesn’t pack down as well as some of the competition, it’s a reliable and durable unit that should last for several years.

It’s also very secure, providing peace of mind even if your pets are on the rambunctious side.

Best of luck, and happy camping!

10 Best Portable Dog Fences for Camping & RVs

travel trailer pet fence

We know you hate leaving your fur baby at home when you go camping, but you also do not like to have to keep him in the RV or in his crate the whole time either. Also, you do not want to be dragging him around on a leash, and tie-outs are dangerous for everyone. That is why we decided to review some portable camping dog fences.

After evaluating more than 30 portable camping dog fences, we found that the “ FXW Dog Playpen ” is the best portable camping dog fence. It has many of the features you need, like a secure lock, adjustable sizes and space, and easy setup.

In addition, you can make it as large as 108 feet around to give your pupster plenty of space to play with his ball or with other dog friends. You can adjust it to fit around your RV steps, and it will stand up to weather, hyper pups, and UV rays.

But I understand that you might have different needs. Maybe you’re interested in a portable dog fence that suits your dog’s size better, or looking for something that would take less space in the trunk. That’s why I prepared a shortlist of the top portable camping fences that address different needs.

In the review below we also listed 10 of our favorites in every group so you can pick the one that is right for you and your pup’s needs. But first, we go over why you need a camping fence , how to choose the right one , and why you should not use tie-outs .

The Risks of Using “Tie-Outs” For Your Dog In a Campsite Instead of Having A Portable Dog Fence

Australian shepherd is tie-out to a table in a campsite

If you have ever taken your fur baby camping with you, you probably already know it is difficult to keep him in the campsite. There are options like putting him in his crate, leaving him in the RV, or tying him up. However, none of these are very good opinions and certainly not recommended by professionals or us at FluentWoof.

Tying him up with a tie-out is another option, but this is one that we do not recommend as well, and in fact, it’s a life-threatening solution. Not only is it annoying to trip over the tie-out or having to untangle him from trees, chairs, and picnic tables, but it is also dangerous for your pooch to be left on a tie-out. Here are some examples:

  • Getting Tangled Up: The most common hazard is your pup getting tangled up with things as mentioned above. Even if you think you have him safely secured away from everything, dogs can surprise you by finding a way to reach things if they want to bad enough.
  • Choking Hazard: Similar to getting tangled up, dogs do not like having anything around their neck that restricts them. Tying them to a tie-out could make your fur buddy miserable the whole time or he could choke if he gets stuck on something.
  • Tripping: You also do not want your pup to be the cause of someone else getting hurt. Tripping over your dog’s tie-out can cause a serious injury for children or even adults.
  • Defenseless Against Predators: When camping, you are likely to see some wildlife like coyotes, bobcats, and bears. You do not want your dog to be trapped in the event that one of these predators happens to make its way into your campsite. Even if there is no wildlife, you also have to worry about other dogs.
  • Unable to Retreat from the Elements: Even if your pooch loves the rain and likes sunbathing, it is not good for them to be trapped in an area that is not protected. He needs shade and shelter as well as water if he is going to be outside for any amount of time.

Reasons a Portable Camping Fence It’s a Must For a Safer Trip

small dog is resting in a RV

Almost every campsite you visit is going to have rules about keeping your dog on a leash or otherwise secured in a crate or by other means. But leaving your fur buddy alone in the RV or car is out of the question. The main thing you want to think about is keeping your pup safe and secure for himself as well as for others. Getting a portable camping dog fence is a pawfect solution.

No matter whether you are staying in an RV or tent, a dog fence will make things so much better for everyone involved. Your fur baby will be able to enjoy the outdoors while spending time with you and the family without having to be tied up, crated, or on a leash.

You cannot forget that there is always wildlife around wherever you go that your dog may be interested in chasing like squirrels and birds. Keeping your pooch in a fence will protect him from getting a disease from a sick animal or from being hurt by one. Unless the critters jump or climb that fence, your dog will be safe.

This type of confinement is also a good idea for when you are sitting around the fire or barbecuing. You do not want your pup to get too close to the fire or grill and you also do not want to have to lock him up or deal with his leash while you cook.

Another major benefit you probably already considered is that it means you do not have to worry so much about your dog running off and getting lost.

8 Rules Of Thumb When Buying a Portable Camping Dog Fence

pug is enjoying the view from this door's tent

Before shopping for your pup’s portable camping dog fence, there are several things to think about. For example, you need one that is high enough to contain him and large enough for him to run around in. Also, you want one that is easy to carry, takes up very little space, and is easy to set up and take down.

It also needs to have safety features like strong locks and solid construction. The material is also important because it has to stand up to the elements, and you need it to be adaptable to different surfaces, including dirt, grass, and maybe even concrete.

  • Your Dog’s Height / Height of the fence: This may seem obvious, but you need to get the right fence height for your fur baby. To determine the size, you have to take into account the height of your pooch when he stands up on his back paws. Also, if you have a dog that loves to jump, you will want an extra high fence.
  • Easy To Carry: Don’t forget, you will have to carry that fence in and out of the RV or vehicle when you are setting it up and taking it down. You do not want something too heavy to lift. Also, it should be easy to carry, so having a carrying case or a built-in handle is pawsome.
  • Safety Features & Durability: Does the fence have secure locks to keep the gate shut? Is it sturdy enough to stay standing if your pup jumps up on it several times a day? Look for solid construction with stakes or poles on each attachment point to ensure your dog does not escape. In addition, be sure there are no sharp edges or points that can cause injury to your dog or you.
  • Material of the Fence: You want a solid metal or thick plastic that is weatherproof and UV resistant. Most camping dog fences are made of steel that is coated with protectants, which is an excellent choice.
  • Perimeter Range: There is no sense of getting a so small fence he cannot move around. He may as well be in his crate if he does not have room to run around and play or stretch out. If you have an extra-large or giant dog breed, you will probably need more than one fence joined together.
  • Adaptability to the campsite and steadiness: Because most camping fences are held in place by stakes or poles, you will need to be able to push them into the dirt or grass to secure it. There are freestanding fences out there, but unless it is super heavy, it will likely fall over if your dog jumps on it.
  • Assembly: You also do not want a fence that takes hours to set up every time you go camping. Find something easy to set up, preferably a fence that can be set up and broken down by one person if you are alone.
  • Storage: Most RVs and all vehicles have limited space, so try to get one that is easy to store that does not take up too much room. Something that folds flat is best.

Best Plastic Portable Invisible Dog Fence

North states mypet petyard dog fencing.

If you’re going to camp somewhere with unpredictable weather, consider this durable invisible fence. Users said it lasted for years through harsh conditions like heavy snow and storms. The mini door panel it comes with is great for small dogs to jump through. But if you need to accommodate a bigger dog, it is easy to switch with replacement doors.

Its plastic material also makes it lightweight. It’s simple enough to transport without hassle but not so light that your dog will knock it over. Keep in mind that agile puppies can jump over the 26” high panels, though. And the invisible fence grid means some small dogs will use it to climb over.

What you can do is connect all the panels to be freestanding or disassemble them to use in different parts of your RV. However, it does take a lot of pressure to disconnect the panel joints. So, take your time so you don’t crack the plastic.

Most Durable Wireless Dog Fence

Yaheetech heavy duty foldable dog fence.

You can buy this invisible fence for between 8 to 32 panels. So whether you want a small crate or a wireless dog fence to wrap around your RV, you’re covered. It’s easy to assemble and tough enough to handle excited pets. Even if your dog rams into the side while playing, it’ll stay put.

One con of having a metal extreme dog fence, as a dog owner, is that it can develop rust. That might be good for one camping trip, but not if you want to reuse it under your RV awning. To solve for more outdoor use, consider looking for anti-rust paint that’s pet-safe.

On the other hand, the wire posts securing it to the ground could be thicker. Some reviewers used zip ties and stacks to help it stick to the floor.

Also, the door panel may be narrow for some large dog breeds, like Labradors. That means if your lab tries going through it, they might take the panel with them. Despite that, it can handle the roughest and rowdiest of pets.

Best Wireless Dog Fence For Small Dogs

Petsfit pop up dog playpen.

This playpen doubles as a wireless dog fence and comfort zone for small dogs. It’s also perfect for traveling because you can fold it into a carrying case. Unlike the other dog fences here, this one comes with a flexible roof and floor attached. You can unzip them to give your dog a view of the night sky or keep it on to protect them from rain.

We also noticed that it’s easy to clean. This pet invisible fence comes with pockets to store pet accessories and a water bottle. You can thread the bottle end through the mesh ‘windows’ so your dog can drink whenever they need. When you’re packing up, it does take practice to learn how to fold it, though. And some anxious dogs chew through the zipper.

Still, the rest of the pieces are high quality, comfortable, and can stand through dogs playing inside of it. It might also calm down your dog, creating a protective nest for them to fall asleep outside.

Easiest Assembly Invisible Dog Fence

Bestpet pet playpen.

This wireless dog fence isn’t just easy to assemble for the dog owner but is also suitable for uneven terrains. The joints between each panel let you adjust the height of each differently. The material is lightweight and takes about 10 minutes for a person to set up alone. So, if you’re making a solo trip with your dog in a hilly area, this might be a good option.

It’s just as easy to disassemble, so it’s perfect for traveling. It also has a height ideal for big dogs like a Doberman. They can usually still peak their head over the invisible fence, but not jump over it.

We caution you to watch out for the wires in each joint, though. Some big dogs got their paws stuck in between them. Also, even though it’s sturdy, we think it could use zip ties and wire to help reinforce it into the outdoor ground. If you use this invisible fence, stick by your dog’s side to ensure they stay safe while you camp.

Best Metal Extreme Dog Fence

Paws & pals wire pen dog fence.

This extreme dog fence has high-quality, thick metal frames to make campers feel secure. That does make it heavier, but also hard for your dog to escape. Another feature that makes it perfect for the outdoors is that it includes thick hooked wires for securing it to the ground.

You can assemble the pieces into a zigzag shape to make a rock-solid, freestanding iron fence. Keep in mind, though, that it’s not foldable. We know the description says it is, but we noticed many reviewers saying it wouldn’t fold flat on its own. You have to remove the pins between panels first.

Regardless, if you’re going on an extended camping trip, this one can make you feel secure. We only suggest having a setup buddy to take some of the weight off your shoulders.

Most Versatile Invisible Dog Fence

Iris exercise panel pet playpen.

This invisible dog fence is both durable and good-looking. It’s a white, neutral color that won’t clash with your RV’s design. That’s especially important because you can disassemble its panels for indoor use. Put them all together for a circular playpen, or remove one to put a gate at your door. Both can be useful for camping in your RV.

Its thick plastic material makes it hard for heavy chewers to budge it. That material also makes it easy to transport.

Like all these dog fences, we should caution you about some things. The poles that join the barrier fence panels have little caps on them. They come off quickly and can pose a choking hazard to your dog. Some small dogs also use the panel grid to climb out. Finally, children can’t lean into it, or it’ll collapse.

Those details make it the best fit for little dogs or puppies. Consider using zip ties instead of caps to secure joints and keep small children away from the pen to fix them.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Portable Dog Fence For Your RV

We’ve covered some of the safest, most durable dog fences for camping with your dogs, but everyone’s needs are different. If you’re taking your dog on the road for the first time or don’t know which to buy, here are extra factors to help you make a decision on these fence systems.

Your Access

You don’t want your dogs to hop over the dog fence. Still, there might be times when you need to exit to set up your fire or tent. Some of these invisible fence doors are narrow but just big enough to let you through. If not, though, make sure you have a fence high enough to contain your dog but low enough for you to step through.

Exposure Time

We know that metal gets rusty when it’s exposed to humidity. If you want a metal fence but want to prevent this, you might want an awning. An RV awning will keep rain from hitting both your dog fence and your dog. As a side bonus, it’ll keep you cool on those hot summer days when you’re camped out. If that’s not an option, look for pet-safe anti-rust waxes to apply at the joints.

Portable Decking

Some of these fences are great for outside but damaging indoors. You don’t want metal wires scratching up shiny hardwood floors. The same thinking makes a difference to your RV decking . If your decking already has a hole pattern or grid, that might be perfect for securing fence wires. If not, though, you might prefer plastic over metal.

If your dog doesn’t like to be cooped up, they might try digging under the dog fence. That’s where playpens with zippable floors come in handy. If you have a big dog, portable decking might solve this problem for you. If you don’t, you can put a long carpet or rug inside the fence to discourage your dog from digging.

Final Thoughts

Portable fences for dogs will help us pet owners to relax, as they keep your dog both safe and happy as a full-time RVer. It can also help you keep an eye on your dog from your tent outside. Your dog can even camp next to you, with a door panel to reach you at any time. If you need one, make sure to check out our top picks for RV dog ramps  as well.

You can pair a ground fence with a dog ramp under your RV door. That lets your dog come in and out of the patio when they want. It’s extra useful if they’re going to take a water break and then relieve themselves right after. Plus, it’ll stop your dog from wandering into other dogs on the campsite without supervision.

It’s good to reduce your dog’s anxiety in a new place. Before you get to your location, try to acclimate them slowly to the new fencing system. Especially with playpens, you want your dog to know what it is so they don’t feel cramped or surprised.

Remember, no ground fence is perfect. It’s best if you always keep an eye on your dog while you camp, so they don’t dog run into any trouble with their excitement. But with these picks, we think you can expect to have a great time with reliable fencing.

What makes SpotOn the most reliable GPS dog fence - for home & on the go?

SpotOn’s True Location™ Technology powers the most reliable GPS dog fence. Our patented technology pairs GPS data with inertial sensors in your SpotOn dog collar that tracks the direction, speed and acceleration of your dog. Intelligent algorithms take all of this data to predict your dog’s True Location™.

SpotOn GPS Fence connects to up to 30 satellites, across four global constellations 一 for greater reliability. So while your dog is roaming free, SpotOn’s tech keeps him on a tight leash to keep him safe.

The best camping dog fence

How SpotOn works as a dog fence for camping - and beyond.

Dogs like traveling, too! Bring your pup along on your next camping trip and don't stress - you can create a SpotOn camping dog fence anywhere you go. The SpotOn GPS dog fence is the most flexible solution for dog containment while camping . No need to worry about tangled leashes when tethering your dog, or not being able to let your active and curious pup move around freely. Instead, he or she can be easily contained within your campsite. Getting going is as easy as 1,2, 3. Just walk the fence boundary with the SpotOn dog collar and SpotOn app the rest - custom fences at your fingertips. Then manage everything from your phone for one dog or multiple dogs. In addition to custom fences, this outdoor dog fence system also has instant perimeter fences, which work great for a quick set up when camping. To safely contain your dog with instant fences on the go, the circular perimeter pinpoints your location and creates an instant fence around you. There are several preset sizes so you can choose the instant perimeter fence that's right for your campsite. Plus, the SpotOn has a ‘Forest Mode’ feature, specifically designed to enhance GPS sensitivity in dense tree cover. Like with any wireless system, you must train your dog to SpotOn GPS Fence before trusting them to respect the boundaries, at home or when camping. The system is based on two audio tones; an alert tone at 10 feet from the boundary, and a warning tone at 5 feet from the boundary. Plus, a vibration and optional static correction at the boundary. It’s important to note that your dog is trained to the tones, not your yard. So once your pup learns the tones, you can move the boundary at any time and create new custom fences, which is why the SpotOn system is so portable and works great as a dog fence for camping.

Here’s why SpotOn is an easy-to-use and convenient dog fencing solution for camping — and everywhere else on the go.
