some hotels could have been better

It was jam packed with every place I wanted to go and see. I especially love my photo of us setting out on the night time river cruise in St Petersburg and the Peter...

I really did not buy much and what I did buy was small gifts for others .

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

Too rushed. Optional tour rather too short

12 Days in the Alps and Lots of My Way Fun

I absolutely love our My Way Alpine Europe Tour itinerary. Imagine enjoying the Alps in Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and France — all in 12 memory-packed days. (While My Way tours are officially un-guided, I took some liberties with the group I led this summer and threw in a few extras.)

Rick Steves with tour group

I enjoyed surprising our group with fun ad-lib stops during our driving days. (The tour is designed to be a series of two-night stands, alternating between driving days with stops and days where we’re set up and free to explore on our own.) We took a group shot at my favorite ruined castle with its new suspension bridge ( Ehrenberg Castle , near Reutte in Austria’s Tirol, just a few minutes over the German border from Neuschwanstein Castle).

in front of Ehrenberg

Our Alpine Europe Tour group came ready to hike. Here we climbed to the hill-capping ruined castle of Ehrenberg . Trish and I snuck up bottles of beer and pop to surprise the group with a little party at the top. I “discovered” these castle ruins as a teenager. Ehrenberg was one of my original Back Doors, which I collected for the first edition of my first book, Europe Through the Back Door (in 1980). Back then, I never dreamed I’d be coming here with busloads of travelers. It’s always a treat to show off my favorite little spots in Europe, and I’m thankful that my team of guides are just as enthusiastic as I am when it comes to sharing with their Rick Steves tour groups the countless magic moments Europe has to offer.

Trish Feaster on luge

As the leader of our tour, I got to decide which of the summer luge rides we’d go on. They only run when the weather’s dry. On this day, the sky was heavy with clouds loaded and ready to dump — but we managed to get our luge rides in. Here’s Trish barreling to the finish line — huge smile blocked by her iPhone. By the way, Trish — who took the photos in this post — has her own blog, and is reporting on this tour from her perspective. For Trish’s take on our My Way Alpine Europe experience, visit The Travelphile .

leg wound

We rode the Biberwier luge ride (just outside of Lermoos, on the Austrian side of the Zugspitze). It’s a fast one, and I always make a very strong point that you need to keep your limbs in tight, hold on to your stick, and be careful. Still, the thrill of the luge sometimes tempts kids-at-heart to go too fast. One man on our tour ended up with a very painful souvenir. What did he do upon finishing that tragic ride? He rode the lift up to do it again.

Rick Steves and group with umbrellas

I am really nervous when leading a group through the Alps, because you can be seriously disappointed by bad weather. On this 12-day trip, we had about three rainy days. While the rain dampened our clothes, it didn’t dampen our spirits. Here we are in Chamonix — at the statue of the men who first climbed Mont Blanc back in 1786 — looking up toward Europe’s highest peak and seeing only clouds. The next morning , the sun came out…and so did Mont Blanc.

Rick Steves group selfie

Leading a tour is more fun with a fun-loving group. And, because of the way we promote our tours, fun travelers are what we get. As I always tell my groups, “You’re the most wonderful group of travelers I’ve had the privilege to lead.” We really did have a wonderful group, with a wide range of ages and styles. Together, we were a lot like a family on the road.

Rick Steves group selfie

My favorite kind of group shot is a group selfie. Twenty happy travelers can pack a lot of joy into one frame — especially after having spent 12 days enjoying a Rick Steves tour itinerary covering the best of the Alps . Happy travels to each of my friends on our tour, and thanks for traveling with us.

Amsterdam book and food

The day after our tour finished, I found myself alone again (singing that old Gilbert O’Sullivan song…naturally). I was in Amsterdam, wearing my guidebook researcher hat. For me, it’s rejuvenating to alternate responsibilities while working on the road. I normally toggle from guidebook research to TV production. This year, I’m adding tour guiding to the mix. I thoroughly enjoyed leading our group — and am already looking forward to guiding our Best of Europe in 21 Days Tour in two short months. But for now, it’s just me, the latest edition of my guidebook, and a list of things to check each day. Thanks for traveling with me.

This is Day 67 of my 100 Days in Europe series. As I research my guidebooks and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences and lessons learned in Vienna, the Alps, the Low Countries, England, and beyond. Find more right here on my travel blog .

I wiped out hard on the Biberwier luge, cracked rib, road rash on my leg arm and face and sore all over. Good Times!

Rick, Love this post with the fun pictures! I know all of you are having a wonderful time.

One little thing: It is Gilbert and Sullivan who did all the Operettas like The Pirates of Penanze and The Mikado and HMS Pinafore. Best, Judy B

Cansei de Ser Sexy reunion tour is a party and a wake

After an 11-year hiatus, singer lovefoxxx reflects on the brazilian quartet’s legacy before a show at the black cat on friday.

travelphile tours tours

Pop music in 2003, when the band Cansei de Ser Sexy was formed in São Paulo by a group of friends, was marked by a particular turn-of-the-millennium vibe: glittery, bright, experimental and expressive, defined by DIY ethics and not a small note of debauchery.

The moment was fleeting. And Cansei de Ser Sexy’s lead singer, Lovefoxxx, assumed the band’s existence would be similarly brief.

“I didn’t expect it to last for two months,” she says on Zoom from her home in São Paulo. “I just thought to myself, ‘If this band lasts for one show and I’m not there dancing, onstage and performing, I’m going to feel a lot of FOMO.’”

She ended up dancing and performing onstage with CSS for a decade before the group stopped touring in 2013.

The vibrant singer (born Luísa Matsushita) kept busy during CSS’s 11-year hiatus; she became a full-time painter, bought land in a beach town on Brazil’s southern coast, built earthships and learned about permaculture (using her airline miles from touring) in far-flung places. The possibility of another tour wasn’t on her radar until a British promoter nudged her and the band to consider a reunion.

Now the quartet is dusting off hits like “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” and “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” (you might remember the latter from a viral iPod commercial ) for a farewell tour that will take them across the United States and Europe, retracing routes worn by their years of party rocking. Lovefoxxx is most excited for the smell.

“American venues, old venues, sometimes they have a certain smell from the construction or something,” she says. “I want to feel this smell and to revisit places. Everything changed so much because for me, this [break] feels like three years. But it’s been a lifetime.”

It certainly has. In the years since CSS (named for a translation of a Beyoncé quote about how she was “tired of being sexy”) stopped performing live, the band has been embraced by nostalgic TikTokers who’ve rebranded the sound of the mid-2000s as “indie sleaze.” Lovefoxxx says the title resonates.

“From all the labels we’ve had, this one translates best the era and the energy,” she says. “It translates the humor of the time. … CSS was always a place where we put this silly energy first.”

That’s just another way she’s been thinking about her group’s legacy, which — among the fun, flirty degeneracy — is also inextricably tied to the era of file sharing when music moved freely online between the lucky few who stumbled upon it or sought it, not served by an algorithm.

“I feel that the connection that people had with us was finding something special,” Lovefoxxx says. It was part of what made the early aughts “the right moment, the right time for us.”

So besides a pungent dressing room, how do you relive that experience? Lovefoxxx isn’t trying to, but the tour is weighing on her, since she suspects it will probably be the band’s last. She says she’s been crying in the days leading up to our call, and she’s crying now. They seem to be mostly happy tears.

“I would like to be anchored in the moment rather than living in the past. I’m not going to be a caricature of what I used to be,” she says. “It’s nice to finish off with a lot of life involved and not just fall apart. We’re going to finish in a very enthusiastic way, which is very CSS.”

May 3 at 8 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. blackcatdc.com . $30-$35.

No one rocks like The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, band thrill on Hackney Diamonds Tour

travelphile tours tours

HOUSTON − It’s not only stunning, but it's somewhat miraculous that more than 60 years after their first tour, the Rolling Stones are still filling stadiums.

It’s even more head-spinning to realize that along with their treasured hits, the Rolling Stones are enhancing their set list with a trio of songs from last year’s well-received “Hackney Diamonds” – their first album of original material in 18 years and the impetus for this 16-city tour.

We’d call it a victory lap, but frontman Mick Jagger is better suited for marathons.

At the kickoff Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, the core triumvirate of Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with their supporting cast of exceptional musicians and singers – hit the massive stage to the sounds of Richards’ slashing out the riff of, fittingly, “Start Me Up.”

Jagger, the nimble CEO of Stones Inc., peacocked in a silver shimmering jacket, his elastic legs a mere pedestal for his rotating torso.

Richards, still owning his disheveled pirate look with a knit cap and multicolored scarf dangling from his hip, and Wood, grinning continuously and occasionally scampering down the lengthy catwalk, retained their roles as faithful consiglieres.

There isn’t a patch of smooth facial skin among them (Jagger and Richards are 80 and Wood is 76). But with the energy to plow through an 18-song, two-hour set – yes, shorter than previous Stones shows, but still fulfilling – no one is looking to crown them pageant winners.

More: Jon Bon Jovi talks 'mental anguish' of vocal cord issues, 'big brother' Bruce Springsteen

While the band needed a couple of songs to fully find their groove – the striding cadence of a reworked “Get Off Of My Cloud” and a ramshackle “Rocks Off” felt curious rather than robust – Jagger compensated with his riveting presence and still-supple vocals.

Along with the “Hackney Diamonds” songs plucked for their major live debuts (the band played a few of the new tracks at an intimate New York club gig in October ), including the feisty “ Angry ” and encore of gospelized “ Sweet Sounds of Heaven ,” the 1966 tune “ Out of Time ” also received its U.S. debut. The band revived it last year during some performances for the overseas Sixty tour.

“I don’t think you really knew it, but you got to know it,” Jagger said with a smile after leading the nearly full stadium through the arm-waving chorus.

As typical for a Rolling Stones production, the stage ran the width of the stadium, blanketed with screens beaming images of the band with magnificent clarity. Close-ups of drummer Steve Jordan, who assumed rhythm duties after the death of original drummer Charlie Watts in 2021, joyfully thundering through the gem “ Paint It, Black ” and birthday boy Chuck Leavell ripping out a fleet-fingered solo on his Yamaha keyboard on “Honky Tonk Women” offered fans a peek at the magic happening a few feet behind Jagger and Co.

During the always-visceral “ Sympathy for the Devil ,” as serpents and fire crawled across the screens, Jagger prowled through the sinister groove, augmented by percussion provided by background vocalist Bernard Fowler and chunky bass lines from Darryl Jones.

Keyboardist Matt Clifford added French horn to “ You Can’t Always Get What You Want ” as Jagger, playing an acoustic guitar, strolled through the message of acquiescence that escalated into a gospel throwdown.

The horn duo of Karl Denson and Tim Ries coated many familiar anthems – “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Miss You” among them – with their rich brass sounds. But, as fans have realized over the decades, the ominous “Gimme Shelter” remains a centerpiece of any Rolling Stones concert, and Jagger has a new onstage playmate in powerhouse background vocalist Chanel Haynes.

The woman who starred as Tina Turner in the West End musical of Turner’s life and officially became part of the band last year steamrolled through “Gimme Shelter” with a voice blaring attitude and vigor. As she and Jagger strolled the catwalk, sharing vocals and chemistry, Jagger wisely backed off a couple of times, allowing Haynes to unleash her theatrical verve.

But this is still Jagger’s circus, and whether he’s bobbing like a jittery prizefighter or wiggling his shoulders like the world’s most slender Chippendales dancer, he is an octogenarian who captivates.

The band has enlisted various openers throughout the tour. In Houston, blues-rock guitar ace – and Texas native – Gary Clark Jr. landed the opening-night slot and for 45 minutes enchanted the mostly full stadium.

With a large band – five musicians, three background vocalists – behind him, Clark was the epitome of cool in dark shades and a bandanna as he took the stage with “Maktub” from his recently released fourth album, “JPEG Raw.”

Clark is a big name for an opener (then again, it is the Rolling Stones) and he used his time well with massive licks on the crunch rockers “Bright Lights” and “This is Who We Are,” with singer Naala joining him.

The soul-inflected “Feed the Babies” seared as a set highlight as the singer/guitarist displayed sizzling playing and a breezy vibe for the crowd.

Irish eyes smile upon Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry in Zurich Classic of New Orleans triumph

Duo outlasts chad ramey/martin trainer in playoff at tpc louisiana.

Change Text Size

When Martin Trainer missed his par-saving, playoff-extending putt late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, the Irish lads – you couldn’t really call them anything else, could you? – looked at each other and hugged. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy had won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Lowry lifted McIlroy up in a colossal embrace, and the celebration was on.

The duo – friends for a quarter century, nearby homeowners in South Florida and weekly playdate pals with their young kids – turned things around Sunday after a tough start and walked away PGA TOUR winners, again.

“We went out there, we had loads of fun, and we won the tournament. You couldn’t ask for a better week,” Lowry said.

“To win any PGA TOUR event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends … Think about where we met and where we've come from, to be on this stage and do this together – just awesome to be able to do it alongside this guy,” McIlroy added.

For McIlroy, it was his 25th TOUR title, his third in a tournament debut. He now has at least one win in seven consecutive PGA TOUR seasons. Lowry won for the first time on TOUR since the 2019 Open Championship, his third TOUR win overall.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry news conference after winning Zurich Classic

McIlroy and Lowry were the expected champions, given the lack of proven winners around them on the leaderboard heading into Sunday. But no one could have predicted Trainer and Chad Ramey zipping 25 spots up the leaderboard in the final round after a format-tying 9-under 63. They were waiting around for upwards of three hours before finding out they would be in a playoff.

And even though McIlroy and Lowry were the favorites, that doesn’t mean the win was guaranteed.

Lowry said at breakfast Sunday they noticed how much the trees were whipping and yet, Ramey and Trainer shot “an unbelievable score.” Lowry and McIlroy were 1-over through six holes and needed to make something happen quickly – and that’s exactly what they did.

“To play the last 12 holes in 5-under I think was very, very good," Lowry said. "It showed a lot about our character and how much we wanted to win this thing,”

Lowry is about two years older than McIlroy; the duo first represented Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship. They were European Ryder Cup teammates in both Wisconsin and Rome. And they played together at the Olympics in 2021, something they’re hoping to do again this summer in Paris.

“I know to go back to Ireland with an Olympic medal would be like a dream,” Lowry said.

“I was in a seven-way playoff in Tokyo for a bronze medal, and I’ve never tried so hard to finish third in my life,” added McIlroy.

This was McIlroy’s fourth straight week of TOUR competition, and Lowry’s third straight. There were no signs of fatigue from either man late Sunday at TPC Louisiana, with McIlroy knocking his drive on the par-5 18th in regulation upwards of 350 yards. Lowry, with a laugh, said he wasn’t sure what to do from the position his partner had left him in.

Rory McIlroy’s clutch 72nd hole chip yields tying birdie at Zurich Classic

This wouldn’t be considered a breakthrough victory for either player, given their long-standing pedigree and solid starts to 2024 (Lowry had two top-five finishes in Florida, while McIlroy won on the DP World Tour earlier this year and finished third at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month), but their easy chemistry in Louisiana could be a harbinger of good things to come.

The fans in New Orleans, too, seemed to buoy the boys. There were chants of "Rory, Rory," and there was a story relayed on the CBS broadcast of Lowry and McIlroy getting a standing ovation when they left dinner on Saturday night at Arnaud’s, a jazzy, 100-year-old fine-dining spot in New Orleans' French Quarter.

“It's not lost on me how cool that is. Every time I get to play in front of thousands of people, the little boy in me just thinks it's so cool and so exciting,” McIlroy said. “The crowd really made the weekend.”

“Rory brings a crowd, and people love him. We've got a lot of love this week in New Orleans, and we've had just the best week,” added Lowry.

What now, though? It was a big week and a big win for some of the TOUR’s most affable players. For Lowry, he’s earned his way into the rest of the Signature Events on the 2024 schedule, and it’s “freed him up,” he said. For McIlroy, he had exited big events like THE PLAYERS and the Masters with a few more questions about his game and its overall direction. This week, though, McIlroy reflected on why he and Lowry, all those years ago back home, started playing golf – because it was fun.

“I think sort of reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week – it can always help,” McIlroy said.

“Hopefully we can both kick on now,” Lowry said of good things to come. “It was great fun all week, everything about it was just brilliant.”

When Irish eyes are smiling, it leads to a PGA TOUR victory.

Hello! I’m Trish. Welcome to TheTravelphile.com. As a high school Spanish teacher, I fell in love with European travel when I first took my students to France and Spain 20 years ago. Since then, I’ve traveled to Europe every year and have journeyed to other places around the globe including Asia, Central America and South America. I love my work as tour guide and guidebook researcher for Rick Steves’ Europe . I also lead exciting tours for Imprint Tours , and I partner with trusted colleagues across the globe to organize tours and help travelers connect with myriad cultures. Additionally, I’m the Managing Editor for Guide Collective , an online travel hub that provides a wealth of guide-curated resources to enhance your travels. And as The Travelphile, I write articles , create travel videos , teach world languages , offer virtual tours , and teach travel classes across the country.

Travel heightens my senses and reminds me to see things with open eyes, an open heart and an open mind—even if I’m just “traveling” in my own town. It provides me with opportunities to learn about the people, history, architecture, art and cuisine of other cultures and, in turn, about myself.  As a veteran tour guide and guidebook researcher, I have the good fortune of sharing all that with fellow travelers.  And now, I’m continuing my travel experiences in America, Egypt, Russia, the Caribbean, Asia, and beyond. I hope you’ll join me on my current adventures and share in my love of travel.  Bon voyage and Journey Well!
