Nasa has begun turning off the spacecraft Voyager’s systems, signalling the beginning of the end of the probe’s 50-year career.

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 – two identical probes – were launched in 1977 and travelled across interstellar space to the edge of the solar system, giving humanity its closest look at the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

Now, however, Nasa must start limiting the Voyagers’ processes in order to keep them operating until 2030.

“We’re at 44 and a half years,” says Ralph McNutt, a physicist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, told Scientific American . “So we’ve done 10 times the warranty on the darn things.”

The first Voyager craft has four remaining functioning instruments, while Voyager 2 has five, all of which are powered by converting decaying plutonium into electricity. This battery has had its output decreasing by approximately four watts every year, leading to Nasa making some tough choices about what to disable; in 2019, engineers had to turn off the heater for the cosmic-ray detector, a key piece of equipment for detecting when Voyager 2 exited the heliosphere- the magnetosphere, astrosphere and outermost atmospheric layer of the Sun.

The final instruments Nasa will disable are likely to be the magnetometer and the plasma science instrument, which are contained in the body of the spacecraft. These are warmed by the excess heat of the computers, while the others are suspended on a 13 metre fiberglass boom, meaning that they are likely to take the longest to get cold.

Both craft remain so far from Earth that it takes a radio signal almost 22 hours to reach Voyager 1 and just over 18 for Voyager 2 – even when travelling at the speed of light.

For every day that the craft move further, it adds another three to four light-seconds to that time. It also makes it harder for Earth to hear communications coming from the Voyagers. “Earth is a noisy place,” says Glen Nagle, outreach and communications manager at the Deep Space Network’s facility in Canberra, Australia. “Radios, televisions, cell phones—everything makes noise. And so it gets harder and harder to hear these tiny whispers from the spacecraft.”

Nevertheless, the usefulness of the craft have far exceeded the expectations of astronomers – expected to reach interstellar space very soon, although will take another 300 years before making it to the edge of the solar system.

“The amount of software on these instruments is slim to none. There are no microprocessors—they didn’t exist!” said Stamatios Krimigis, emeritus head of the space department at Johns Hopkins APL and designer of the Low-Energy Charged Particle [LECP] detector system on the craft.

“On the whole,” Mr Krimigis continues, “I think the mission lasted so long because almost everything was hardwired. Today’s engineers don’t know how to do this. I don’t know if it’s even possible to build such a simple spacecraft [now]. Voyager is the last of its kind.”

Voyager 1 is back online! NASA's most distant spacecraft returns data from all 4 instruments

The spacecraft has resumed full science operations after a technical issue began creating complications in November 2023.

artwork of voyager 1 spacecraft in black space background

All right, everyone — we can all breathe a sigh of relief. NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is fully operational once more, with all four science instruments returning usable data to Earth.

The problems began in November 2023, when Voyager 1 lost its ability to "speak" with us. More specifically, it started sending to Earth unintelligible data instead of its normal 0s and 1s of binary code. Of course, Voyager 1 is 46 years old — ancient for a spacecraft — so it wasn't entirely a surprise that its health might be waning. And that's not to mention that it's in entirely uncharted interstellar territory, some 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth.

Voyager 1's dogged team was determined to not only figure out what went wrong, but also to fix the problem. And they've succeeded! Controllers identified where the issue was located: the flight data subsystem (FDS), used to "package" data to be sent to Earth. Further sleuthing revealed the exact chip causing the problem, which allowed them to find a workaround. After the team relocated the code to a new location in the FDS, Voyager 1 finally sent back intelligible data on April 20, 2024 — but only from two of its four science instruments. Now, just two months later, Voyager 1's remaining two science instruments are back up and running, communicating effectively with mission control on Earth.

Even if Voyager 1 had gone dark for good, however, the mission would still have been a wild success. After it launched in 1977, its primary mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn — that was accomplished by 1980. (Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2 , went on to study Uranus and Neptune .) But Voyager 1 is on an unstoppable path. Continuing its journey away from Earth, the spacecraft entered interstellar space in 2012, returning crucial data about this mysterious realm.

 — Voyager: 15 incredible images of our solar system (gallery) — Scientists' predictions for the long-term future of the Voyager Golden Records will blow your mind — Ed Stone, who led NASA's iconic Voyager project for 50 years, dies at 88

Now that Voyager 1 is back online, the team will continue to "touch up" the spacecraft to get it back in top form, including resynchronizing its timekeeping software to execute commands at the right time , as well as performing maintenance on the digital tape recorder that measures plasma waves. And hopefully, Voyager 1 will have a long, happy life ahead.

  • yossarian22 This is the energizer bunny of space crafts. It just keeps going and going even when NASA believes they have heard the last from it. Pretty good for a vessel with the computing power that's less than the average electronic car key of today. Reply

  • Questioner Voyager 1 would be an excellent place to measure the orbit diameters of Solar system planets using its distances to and trigonometry with angles from the background stars. A fine place to differentiate if any discrepancies of distance occur from mass field internal frames of reference (we measure) and its more largely mass field external frame of reference. Keep that 46 y/o puppy 'right now' relevant, with informative experiments. Come on people, let’s do some science. Reply

Voyager 50 - Van den Hoven Jachtbouw

VOYAGER 50 OPENS UP NEW HORIZONS

Offering an abundance of sailing comfort at all speeds, the new Voyager 50 makes Van den Hoven Jachtbouw enter a whole new market.   The configuration and sporty looks of this 50-footer will appeal to younger owners, with or without guests, while the single-level layout and low entry makes the yacht attractive to older clients too. The yacht will be extremely manoeuvrable and easy to sail, moor and operate, making it the ideal weekender for a quick trip. High comfort levels ensure the Voyager 50 is very suitable for longer stays on board too.

Although the exterior of the 15-metre ‘coupé’ yacht follows the concept of previous Voyagers, her compact and stretched lines make for a faster look. With a typically Mediterranean feel, the design by René van der Velden features a spacious open cockpit that will host lots of outdoor fun. The gangways provide plenty of space to move around safely, while the large yet cosy aft deck is perfect for al fresco lounging and dining with loved ones or guests.

OPEN COCKPIT AND LOTS OF OUTDOOR LIVING

The Voyager 50 features an impressive amount of storage space for bicycles. An optional hydraulic swim platform can accommodate a tender of up to 3.85 metres. For optimal comfort, the owner can choose to install two 60 m² stabilisers and HE750 Humphree interceptors.

The vertical windscreen gives the saloon a remarkable amount of indoor space compared to similarly sized yachts, comfortably seating eight people. The interior also includes a well-equipped galley, three cabins with six beds and two bathrooms.

COMFORT, SPEED AND MANEUVERABILITY

Because the Voyager 50 is built entirely in aluminium, it is fully adaptable to your wishes. This includes the interior, materials and equipment too. The yacht’s performance is as you would expect from a Van den Hoven: a perfect combination of comfort, speed and manoeuvrability. The standard bow and sternthruster make mooring and unmooring as easy and safe as can be, while the 480 hp engine gives you a top speed of 22 knots.

In short: this compact luxury motoryacht is perfect for active people looking to enjoy short and longer trips. Construction of the first Voyager 50 is well underway.

Life beyond 50+ is so exciting, especially when you are with like-minded young people and want to enjoy life like kid. This is how I would like to summarize 50+ Voyagers. My mom for the first time travelled alone with a group of strangers but she came back with lifelong friends and memories to cherish. I am so glad that I could facilitate creating this memory for her during recent Ladakh trip. Very well organised, all thanks to Sangita who personally took care of everyone on the trip. Pictures of this event are saying a lot more. How I wish I was 50+ too ! Looking forward to creating more memories for my mom with you.

The life starts at 50 is what I fully endorse after joining Ladakh trip 3rd-11th August 2016. Every person has a child within, let it come out and there can be no better way than joining 50+ Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club. I was a bit skeptical and apprehensive of joining it but now I think it has been my one of the best decisions to be a part of it. The itinerary was properly planned right from the flights to hotels to sightseeing. Everything was hassle free. In a nut shell it was adventurous, amazing and awesome experience. Thank you Sangita for making me feel younger and healthier.

Due to the age factor (78+), going alone anywhere gives me a little scare. When I came to know about 50+ Voyagers and booked Coorg tour with them, I was in the beginning skeptical how the services would be. However, when the day arrived to commence the 3 days holidays, everything from pick up from my house till they dropped me back at home - went off in the most pleasant and smooth manner. The accommodation was the best one could imagine nice cottages among a 250 acres of coffee estate, where nature showed its splendor. I would say that 50+ Voyagers is the ideal organization to look for those who have crossed 50. The service rendered by them is superb. I am looking forward to my next holiday with 50+ Voyagers.

At the outset, my wife (aged 66 with knee problem) and I (70 years) were apprehensive as to whether we would be able to undertake the Himachal Pradesh tour given mountainous and hilly area conditions. Well after horse-riding at Kufri, I could see from expressions on the face of my wife that she had got her confidence back and had almost forgotten her knee pain. Advantage of travelling with 50+ Voyagers is that all are of almost same age, group being almost on same wave length, customized visiting places, cohesiveness and careful planning. I recommend to my friends of above fifty to avail themselves of the facilities provided by the 50+ Plus Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club. I am sure you will agree that age is just a number.

3 Cheers 50+ Voyagers for arranging this wonderful tour to Kenya. One of the most amazing, satisfying and enjoyed tours to Kenya. Did not realise how one week just flew. Still living in the world of the wild animals and keep looking at all the pictures. Though it was a very rough terrain with no roads we did not feel it then. Was it the company we were in or just being amongst nature ? It was worth it and would love to take more tours with them. Going to Nagaland Hornbill Festival with 50+ Voyagers in December. Hats off to 50+ Voyagers Travel and Adventure Club for catering to us 60+

It was my 5th trip with 50+ Voyagers, when I went on a 8 day trip to Sri Lanka ! My first international! Everything was taken care well - My safety being a single lady, the company that I want, to share my views and experiences while travelling together with like minded, same aged men and women who are relaxed with no hassles of not getting leave from work place, and with relaxed mindset to enjoy life after finishing duties towards children.. what more you want? In the last trip to Srilanka, I found myself climbing 1700 steps to top of lion rock fort at 200ft height which I thought was unbelievable!
