Magical transportation
- View history
The Flying Ford Anglia and the Hogwarts Express
There existed various methods of magical transportation [1] that were employed by wizardkind across the wizarding world .
- 1.1 Apparition
- 1.2 Floo Network
- 1.4 Ground travel
- 1.5 Portkey
- 1.6 Miscellaneous

Methods [ ]
Apparition [ ].
Harry Potter and Hermione Granger Apparating
Apparition allowed an individual to vanish and appear at another place almost instantly. [2] The act of Apparating created a noise ranging from a small pop to a loud crack. [3] [4] [5] [6] It was difficult technique to master and became increasingly unreliable over long distances. [3] It required complete concentration on the destination, determination and focus upon the desired location, and deliberation and certainty of reaching the goal. [3] Only of-age wizards who qualified for licences may have been able to legally Apparate. [3]
Apparition lessons in the Great Hall
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry offered Apparition lessons to students ages seventeen and older. [7]
Side-Along Apparition allowed those with licences to bring minors along with them. [8] Poor focus may have resulted in Splinching , which caused body parts to be separated and left behind. [9] [10] The process of Apparition was said to feel like being "forced through a very tight rubber tube". [8]
Floo Network [ ]
British Ministry of Magic employees using the Floo Network
Floo powder was a magical green powder that was thrown into a lit fireplace and allowed for a portal to connect to another fireplace at a desired location. [11] The system was operated and overseen by the Floo Network , which was based at the British Ministry of Magic . [12] [13]
A fireplace had to be connected to the Floo Network for one to travel to it, [11] and fireplaces could be connected temporarily, in the case of travelling to Muggle homes. [14] The Floo Network could also be used as a form of communication between wizards. [15] [16]
For America, the Magical Congress of the United States of America oversaw the Floo Network. The network appeared to be divided into regions as the "Southern Floo Network", as mentioned in the newspaper The New York Ghost . [17]
A flying lesson taking place at Hogwarts
Wizards used broomsticks to travel long distances, [18] or for sport, particularly in the game Quidditch . [19] [20] This skill of flying on brooms was taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to first-years in Flying classes . [18] The Cushioning Charm invented by Elliot Smethwyck provided comfort on broomsticks. [19] Some modern broomsticks included the Comet , Cleansweep , Nimbus , and Firebolt . [19]
In Asia and the Middle East, flying carpets were the primary form of wizarding transport, but were currently designated as Muggle artefacts in Britain and were therefore illegal to enchant . They also could not be imported, despite at least one merchant 's continued efforts to do so. This ban seemed to be relatively recent as Bartemius Crouch Senior 's grandfather owned a flying Axminster before they were made illegal. [21]
Flying Ford Anglia
Vehicles such as cars [22] [23] [24] and motorcycles [25] [26] could also be modified to be capable of flight, though this was also technically illegal under Misuse of Muggle Artefacts laws. [22]
A range of flying magical creatures were also available for transport, such as Thestrals [27] [26] and Hippogriffs . [28] [29] When visiting Hogwarts for the 1994 Triwizard Tournament , the Beauxbatons students travelled in a carriage drawn by Abraxan winged horses . [30] Day students of Mahoutokoro (students between the ages of seven and eleven) that did not board at the school flew on the backs of flocks of giant storm petrels every day. [31]
Ground travel [ ]
The Knight Bus picking up a stranded Harry Potter
The Knight Bus took stranded wizards to anywhere in the United Kingdom . [32] [33]
Hogwarts students were transported to and from the school on the Hogwarts Express , a train that departed from a magically hidden rail platform from King's Cross Station , London . [34] [35] Ministry cars could be used to get to King's Cross Station . [36] [37]
Very rarely, a Centaur would allow a human to ride on its back. This was the most solemn of events, offered only to highly honoured riders. [38]
Portkey [ ]
Transporation via portkeys
Portkeys were magical objects that allowed for travel across extreme distances or to places that have been charmed against detection. Portkeys may have sent unsuspecting people anywhere, and so they required Ministry authorisation to use and operate. They were usually disguised as ordinary rubbish, such as a crushed aluminium can or a dirty, discarded sock, so Muggles were more likely ignore them, though incidents of muggles being transported had happened. [3] [39]
Portkeys could be set to activate either at a prearranged time, or as soon as the person came in contact with them. [3]
Miscellaneous [ ]
Durmstrang Ship
Durmstrang students travelled on a ship when visiting Hogwarts for the 1994 Triwizard Tournament . Even though it appeared from a whirlpool in the Hogwarts lake , there was still rowing involved. The ship probably acted like a boat on water but with anti-water spells of some sort to prevent water entering the boat. [30]
A Vanishing Cabinet allowed objects and creatures to transport from one cabinet to the other. [40] [41]
The British Ministry of Magic used the Toilet network as the official way to gain entry to its headquarters . [42]

First Time Tips for Visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
EDITOR’S NOTE: This blog was originally published in April of 2021 and then underwent extensive updates and editing in August of 2023 to remain current and relevant.
You’re heading to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter !
I remember the first time I knew I was going to be able to go to Hogwarts and try a Butterbeer just like Harry Potter. I was overflowing with excitement, which only increased ten-fold when I found myself finally walking under the arches into Hogsmeade village. I’m pretty sure I stood there for a good chunk of time staring and taking it all in before finally making a mad dash to get everything done in a matter of hours.
Planning on how best to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the first time can be daunting. With two lands that span across two theme parks — Hogsmeade in Universal Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida — and tons of things to do, eat, drink, and see in each, you can easily find yourself missing out on some of the incredible details and experiences.
Here’s a list of planning tips and can’t-miss experiences you’ll want to check out before your upcoming visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort .
Don’t Try Doing It All in One Day
If you have one day to spend in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , you can get the majority of things done, while enjoying the rest of the theme park attractions. But, if you truly want to get the full wizarding world experience without feeling rushed, I recommend dedicating a day in Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure) and a day in Diagon Alley (Universal Studios).
Remember to Pack Your Robe and Wand
It’s not every day you can wander the streets of Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley like a real witch or wizard. Make sure to add your robe, wand, and any other Harry Potter apparel or accessories to your packing list for some real epic pics. If you want to get your gear during your visit, there are many shops to check out throughout the wizarding world .
Arrive Early and Stay Late
Try to get there first thing in the morning for fewer crowds. (If you’re staying at a Universal hotel , definitely take advantage of the Early Park Admission perk!) On the flipside, if the theme parks are open later, try to stay until nighttime. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is absolutely breath-taking at night.
Ride the Hogwarts Express Both Ways
Hop aboard the Hogwarts Express and travel back and forth between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Make sure to take it both ways as each way has a different experience . (You’ll need a park-to-park ticket in order to ride the Hogwarts Express.)
Don’t Miss Diagon Alley
The entrance to Diagon Alley is cleverly disguised as a brick wall in the London area, just like it’s described as in the films and books. Believe it or not, some people (like my brother’s friends) walk right by it!
Try All Six Types of Butterbeer Treats
You’re probably familiar with Butterbeer, the frothy drink from the films and books that is reminiscent of butterscotch and shortbread. But, did you know there are six different Butterbeer treats you can try in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, like soft-serve ice cream and fudge?
Dairy-free Butterbeer is now available at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Don’t Skip the Queues
Typically, I’m all for getting through queues quickly, but the ride queues in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are ones you don’t want to miss. You get to see the iconic rooms and details inside Hogwarts castle and Gringotts bank, and even pass through Platform 9 ¾ on your way to ride the Hogwarts Express.
See All the Shows
A choir of singing frogs AND a theater troupe who performs with puppets? What more could you want. There are five live shows — two in Hogsmeade and three in Diagon Alley — you can see perform daily. (Check the Universal Orlando Resort App for show times.)
Ride Both the Sidecar and Motorbike
There are two ways to ride on Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure , and each seat gives you a unique experience. I’ll take it one step further and say I’ve heard riding at night is, and I quote, “life-changing.”
Don’t Miss Out on Magical Experiences
Make time for some of the more lesser-known experiences like sending a letter with a Hogsmeade stamp, mixing your own elixirs , chatting with a goblin , or creating your very own moving pictures at Shutterbutton’s .
Check Out Knockturn Alley
You may be too distracted by the fire-breathing dragon atop Gringotts bank when you first enter Diagon Alley and walk right by Knockturn Alley . Put your brave face on and wander into this shadowy alleyway, which gives you a taste of Dark Magic in the wizarding world.
Treat Yourself to More Than One Wizarding Treat
Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans, Sugar Quills, Pumpkin Pasties, and more. Nab a few of your favorite wizarding world sweets before you leave and enjoy them while reminiscing about your trip after you get back home.
Don’t Forget Your Interactive Wand Map
If you treat yourself to an interactive wand , don’t forget about the map! Each wand comes with a map that shows where you can cast spells throughout Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Don’t be like me wandering around aimlessly searching the ground for bronze spell markers because you forgot it.
Explore the Shop Windows
Your attention may be pulled toward the rides or getting a Butterbeer, but make sure to take some time to do some “window” shopping. There are incredible details in each shop window that bring the magic to life right before your eyes.
Don’t Miss Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Coming to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter any time of the year is quite magical, but coming during the holidays… it’s a whole ‘nother experience you won’t want to miss. Need more convincing? Two words: hot Butterbeer.

10 Scottish Locations Harry Potter Fans Must Visit
28 Jun, 2021
People of all ages love Harry Potter. What began as a humble collection of kids’ books has become the best-selling book series of all time and has been adapted into some of the highest-grossing films of all time.
All of this success has led to quite a few Harry Potter-themed attractions around the world, too. There are the created attractions like Harry Potter World in London and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida. But we’d like to make a case for why Scotland is, by far, the best place for Harry Potter fans to visit.
In fact, there are tonnes of Scotland TV and film locations to visit, with Harry Potter being only one of many such draws for fans. Without further ado, here are 10 locations in Scotland Harry Potter fans must visit!
1. Hogwarts in the Scottish Highlands
In the Harry Potter books, Hogwarts is set in the Scottish Highlands, which is one of the main reasons why there are so many Scottish locations in the films.
If you see a beautiful vista in one of the films, with rolling hills or jagged mountains, chances are it’s in the Scottish Highlands. Loch Arkaig, Clachaig Gully, and Glencoe all served as filming locations for the Harry Potter movies.
There are extraordinary hiking trails in the Highlands, as well as scenic drives and jaw-dropping viewpoints. Keep an eye out for Hogwarts wherever you go! It’s supposed to have a secret protective barrier around it to keep it hidden from muggles, but you never know…
We have a pre-packaged Scottish Highlands tour if you’re keen on seeing this epic scenery, but we can also adapt any of our tour itineraries to include a trip to the Highlands.
2. Victoria Street in Edinburgh: The Real Diagon Alley?
While York claims that its street ‘The Shambles’ was the inspiration for Harry Potter and London’s Leadenhall Market provided the exterior shots for the film, Edinburgh has a solid claim for the real Diagon Alley.
J. K. Rowling lived in Edinburgh the entire time she wrote the Harry Potter books and it’s rumoured that Edinburgh’s eccentrically beautiful Victoria Street was the true inspiration for Diagon Alley.
Victoria Street has a multicoloured mixture of storefronts selling all kinds of wares. While the street’s unique curving shape isn’t quite diagonal, it’s certainly not straight either!
There is actually a Diagon Alley plaque on Candlemaker’s Row, an alley just off Victoria Street. Whether true or not, it’s easy to see why this Edinburgh road is popular with Harry Potter fans!
3. The Glenfinnan Viaduct for the Harry Potter Train
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a beautiful railway viaduct on the West Highland Line that any self-respecting Harry Potter fans are guaranteed to recognise.
It is the set of one the most iconic shots in all of the movies, as the Hogwarts Express in Chamber of Secrets is making its way to the school and Ron and Harry are flying overhead in Arthur Weasley’s flying Ford Anglia.
But that’s not all: the Glenfinnan Viaduct was also where the train stopped in Prisoner of Azkaban when the dementors searched for Sirius Black.
For Harry Potter fans and history fans alike, the Jacobite Express (the real name for the “Harry Potter train”) is a view worthy of a photo op.
Timing your visit to see the train crossing the viaduct is easy enough, especially when you have a local expert guiding your journey through the Highlands and beyond!
If you’re visiting with the whole family, take a look at our suggestion for the best itinerary for touring Scotland with kids to see how you could fit in a sighting of the Hogwarts Express!
4. Greyfriars Kirkyard: Visit Tom Riddle’s Grave in Edinburgh
J. K. Rowling has been very open about how much inspiration she has taken from her adopted city (Edinburgh). Some of that inspiration has come from Greyfriars Kirkyard — a hauntingly beautiful old graveyard close to The Elephant House Café (more on that Harry Potter location later).
Authors often cite gravestones as a great resource for choosing characters’ names. Rowling claims to have found the name for her greatest villain in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Take a visit to the graveyard and look for Tom Riddle’s grave, but be prepared for a slightly different spelling: Thomas Riddell Esquire.
There is also a gravestone with ‘William McGonagall’ on it. Perhaps this was the inspiration for Hogwarts’ great transfiguration professor?
You won’t be alone in your Harry Potter fan search here; there are frequent tour groups and Potterheads marking fairly clear paths to the most prominent names in the graveyard.
5. Give J.K. Rowling a High-Five at Edinburgh City Chambers
The Edinburgh City Chambers, on the Royal Mile, is an impressive building in its own right. But it might be especially appealing to Harry Potter fans keen to see its tribute to J. K. Rowling.
Edinburgh gives the ‘Edinburgh Award’ to outstanding residents of the city and J. K. Rowling certainly matches that description! Rowling won the award in 2008 and an impression of her hands has been immortalised in bronze in the City Chambers courtyard.
This is definitely a Scotland destination for Harry Potter fans to catch a glimpse of the hands that created your favourite fictional world! Go ahead and give her handprints a high-five to thank her for these stories.
6. The Final Harry Potter Chapter: The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh
The Balmoral Hotel is a really swanky establishment on Edinburgh’s gorgeous Princes Street, and it’s worth visiting if you want your stay in Edinburgh to be particularly extravagant!
However, it has a special attraction for Harry Potter fans. This was where J. K. Rowling stayed while she was writing The Deathly Hallows , the final book in the Harry Potter series.
Rowling apparently stayed in the hotel to get away from any day-to-day distractions while she finished her series. The room she stayed in is now called The J. K. Rowling Suite.
Don’t worry if the Balmoral is out of your budget. We have plenty of suggestions for hotels in Edinburgh and you’ll also want to get some inspiration from our recommended things to do in Edinburgh .
7. Hogwarts in Glasgow? The University of Glasgow
Whilst it was actually Alnwick Castle in the North East of England that was used for the exterior shots of Hogwarts in the first few films, pretty much everyone who sees the University of Glasgow’s main building is struck by its uncanny resemblance to Hogwarts.
Not only does it look the part from the outside, but it also has a courtyard inside that looks a lot like the spot where Harry first learned to fly his broomstick in the first film.
You can visit both Glasgow and Edinburgh as part of our Two Cities tour !
8. Hogwarts in Edinburgh? George Heriot’s School
The University of Glasgow bears a striking resemblance to Hogwarts in the films, but George Heriot’s School is actually the school that inspired J. K. Rowling for her books. It was visible from her preferred writing spot in The Elephant House café (more on that below).
George Heriot’s School is a beautiful old building with turrets that make it look a lot like a castle, and it dates back to the early 1600s. Rowling has also said that she based Hogwarts’ different houses on the house system used at George Heriots.
The school isn’t usually open to visitors, but you can certainly get a good look at it from The Elephant House café.
9. Steall Falls from the Goblet of Fire
Whilst exploring the stunning Scottish Highlands, enjoying a short walk to Steall Falls might remind you of a particular moment in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire .
There are many other locations in the Highlands to visit for Harry Potter scenery, including Loch Etive, Loch Morar, and Loch Eilt, and Rannoch Moor.
10. Birthplace of Harry Potter: The Elephant House in Edinburgh
This charming little café has a pretty great claim to fame: it is, arguably, the ‘birthplace of Harry Potter’. It has even written this on its window!
There’s actually a lot of truth to this claim as The Elephant House was the café J. K. Rowling escaped to when she was writing the first Harry Potter novel.
Some writers need to get away from home to get their creative juices flowing and Rowling has said in the past that the café was a great place for her to write Harry Potter.
If you want to visit the place where the entire Harry Potter World was first built, then The Elephant House is an absolute must. Don’t miss out on the Harry Potter-themed graffiti in the toilets!

Harry potter: 10 best magical means of transport.
The world of Harry Potter is full of the conveniences that magic can provide, and here are the best magical methods of transportation in the universe.
The Harry Potter Universe is full of magical conveniences. For instance, when Harry breaks his glasses, they can be repaired with a R eparo charm, and Molly Weasley can use magic to do the washing up and other housework. However, perhaps one of the best conveniences magic can provide is transport based.
RELATED: Harry Potter: The Best Location From Every Movie
As Muggles, we all need to make our way from point A to point B in a dull, and often slow manner, whether it be by car, bus, or several hours on an airplane. On the other hand, wizards can instantly transport from one city to another, or even fly magical creatures or machines. This article will list the 10 best magical means of transport.
Floo Powder
Traveling via the Floo Network is one of the first instances of magical transportation seen in the Harry Potter Universe . In the Chamber of Secrets , Harry and the Weasleys attempt to travel to Diagon Alley via the Floo Network. Traveling via Floo Network works by standing in a fireplace, clearly shouting the name of your target location, and then dropping some Floo Powder.
However, during the Chamber of Secrets, Harry does not pronounce 'Diagon Alley' clearly enough and ends up in Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley instead. While Floo Powder is an interesting way to travel it isn't the most graceful, certainly not when quicker and cleaner methods exist, such as apparition.
A portkey is an enchanted object that will bring anyone who touches it to a pre-arranged location. The first portkey seen in Harry Potter is in the Goblet of Fire , when Harry and the gang take the 'manky old boot' to the Quidditch World Cup. Portkeys are useful for wizards who cannot apparate or for traveling to those locations that do not have a fireplace.
While portkeys are an interesting way to travel, they are not as easy or convenient as apparition and so it cannot be ranked too high on this list.
This one may be a controversial addition to this list, but it is certainly an arguable addition. While the Knight Bus will not provide the most comfortable means of transport, it is certainly a fun and fast way to travel. Additionally, the Knight Bus is also economically sound as riding the bus costs eleven sickles, regardless of how far you are traveling.
Think of the Knight Bus as a theme park ride and you will have fun while riding it. Sure, it might be slower and less convenient than apparating or taking the Floo Network, but it will certainly be more memorable.
The broomstick is a classic way of travel for wizards. Not only does it allow wizards to travel quickly between two points, but it is also a huge part of wizard culture due to its involvement in Quidditch . Without the broom, everyone's favorite fictional sport wouldn't exist.
RELATED: Harry Potter: 1o Characters Who Could Have Been Professional Quidditch Players (But Chose A Different Career)
That being said, the reason why this is so low on the list is due to the comfort of broomstick riding. Honestly, sitting on a wooden stick would be incredibly uncomfortable, especially if you're traveling a significant distance.
What's better than a car? A flying car that can turn invisible! Fortunately, this vehicle exists in the Harry Potter Universe with its flying Ford Anglia.
While the main downside to the broomstick is its lack of comfort, the flying car does not have this issue. Furthermore, there is also a roof over your head to prevent any potential weather concerns and space for a car radio to provide entertainment for any long journey. The inclusion of the Ford Anglia in the Chamber of Secrets even managed to make the price of this model skyrocket in the muggle world.
Apparation is probably the most efficient method of transport on this list. Essentially, apparition is magical teleportation. Whenever a wizard apparates, they are instantly transported to their intended location.
If you master the skill you will no longer have to take public transport to work or pay for your car’s fuel. You will simply appear at your target location and you’re good to go. However, there are some drawbacks to apparition. For instance, apparition does not work over exceptionally long distances and there are some risks if the apparition is not carried out successfully, such as splinching. That being said, the only reason why this isn’t first placed is that there are methods of transport that are more stylish.
Is there a moment in Harry Potter that conveys more unbridled joy than the scene in the Prisoner of Azkaban in which Harry rides Buckbeak?
RELATED: Harry Potter: 5 Creatures We'd Want As Pets (& 5 We Definitely Would Not)
Everything about this scene makes riding a hippogriff look amazing. The background music, the expression on Harry's face, and even Buckbeak's regal expression and the way he skims the surface of the Black Lake. Hippogriff transport, then, would be amazing. Not only do you have a way to fly from point A to point B, but you also have a loyal pet as well.
While thestrals were first seen in the Order of the Phoenix , they had appeared in earlier movies. The carriages that take students to Hogwarts, while appearing to look like they pull themselves, are actually pulled by thestrals. Thestrals are only visible to those who have seen death, which is why they are not seen by most students.
Many of the thrills you would get from riding a hippogriff would also apply to riding a thestral. The only differences being that, to those who cannot see the thestral, you will appear to be flying in a seated position and to those who can see the thestral, you will look gothic and edgy.
Hogwarts Express
Is there a more iconic vehicle in Harry Potter than the Hogwarts Express ? It not only takes Harry, Ron, and Hermione to Hogwarts for the first time but it also takes us to Hogwarts for the first time.
While it might appear to be nothing more than a train, we ought to also consider the destination. If you're taking the Hogwarts Express it means that you're heading to Hogwarts (unless you're catching it back to King's Cross, but then you've already been to Hogwarts anyway)! Everything from the face of the train, to the carriages, to the sweet trolley is iconic and it would be a dream come true for millions to ride this train.
While this event was only seen once in canon, it was certainly memorable. In the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore is set to be arrested by a group from the Ministry of Magic including Percy Weasley, Dolores Umbridge, and Kingsley Shacklebolt. However, just when you think the headmaster is cornered with nowhere to go, Dumbledore claims he 'will not go quietly' then raises his hands and claps as Fawkes the phoenix appears and with a huge, fiery explosion Dumbledore and Fawkes had disappeared.
Essentially, this was a phoenix's form of apparition. While, basically, it does the same thing as apparition, it does it with magnificent style. If normal apparition is like driving a Ford, phoenix apparition is like driving an Aston Martin.

11 Essential Tips for Visiting Harry Potter World in Orlando
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida is such a fun and exciting place to visit! But planning a trip to Harry Potter World can be stressful! That’s where this guide comes in – it will share all of the best tips for Harry Potter World and as well as our best tips and tricks for planning your amazing vacation!
Sound good?
Let’s get right into the Harry Potter World tips!
Tips for Visiting Harry Potter World
Buy park hopper passes.
There are two different areas of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and they are located in two separate parks. Diagon Alley is located in Universal Studios, and Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle is in Island of Adventure.
The Hogwarts Express train runs back and forth between the two parks, but you can only ride it if you get park hopper passes .
Park hopper passes are a little more expensive, but are definitely worth it for the Hogwarts Express.
If you’re visiting Universal Studios for multiple days, you can save money by just getting park hopper passes for one day in order to be able to ride the Hogwarts Express.
Don’t get Express Passes the First Day
If you’re visiting on a weekday and you have more than one day to spend at Harry Potter World, I don’t recommend getting Express Passes on the first day.
This is for two main reasons. One, they’re very expensive – an extra $79.99 – $109.99 per person, per day.
Second, on weekdays, the lines for rides aren’t always super long, especially in the morning.
For example, on a Friday morning in both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, I never waited more than 20 minutes to get on a ride. Personally, it was fine with me to wait 15-20 minutes for a ride instead of spending an extra $100.
If you find that the park is very busy on your first day, visit all of the shops and restaurants and buy Express Passes for the next day, so you can easily go on all the rides.
Visit for at Least Two Days
While it is possible to see both sections of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in just one day, it will feel a little rushed – especially if you want to go on all the rides.
Because of this, I recommend spending at least two days at the park. Personally, I think two days is the perfect amount of time, but someone who loves going on rides will probably enjoy spending 3+ days between the parks.
Visit in the Colder Months
Florida, and Orlando specifically, gets extremely hot and humid during the summer. Because of this, I recommend visiting in the fall or winter when it’s more mild.
Standing in line when it’s 90 degrees, sunny and humid is not super enjoyable – and it will definitely make your time at the park a little less pleasant.
Even during the winter months you’ll have temperatures in the 70s, which personally I think is perfect for visiting a theme park.
Download the Universal App
When you enter the park you can grab a paper map to find your way around, but an easier option is to download the Universal App.
The app is really great, as in addition to having a digital map, it also tells you wait times at rides and attractions. This is a great way to plan your stops and see which rides you should visit when!
The app also tells you what time various shows begin, which is very helpful!
Head to the Most Popular Rides First Thing in the Morning
In order to get the shortest wait times, I recommend heading to the most popular rides first thing in the morning.
If you’re staying in a Universal Studios Hotel, you get to enter Island of Adventure Park (Harry Potter World: Hogsmeade) an hour early.
In Hogsmeade you’ll find the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride (in Hogwarts Castle), Flight of the Hippogriff and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
If you go to Universal Studios first, home of Diagon Alley, head directly to the Escape from Gringotts ride. This is the most popular attraction in Diagon Alley, and the line can get long quickly.
Stay at an On-Site Hotel
As mentioned above, staying at a Universal Studios on-site hotel has certain perks. For example, you get to enter Island of Adventure (Harry Potter World: Hogsmeade) an hour before the park officially opens.
Additionally, each of the on-site hotels offers free transportation to the parks, either by shuttle or water taxi. The transportation options are fantastic, and make getting to the park super easy.
Lastly, the more luxury accommodations, such as Loews Portofino Bay Hotel , Loews Royal Pacific Resort and the Hard Rock Hotel , provide guests with free, unlimited Express Passes for each day they are in the park.
During my most recent stay, I stayed at Universal Endless Summer: Surfside Resort . This is the most budget friendly of the hotels offered – along with its sister hotel across the street: Universal Endless Summer: Dockside Resort .
Although Universal Endless Summer: Surfside Resort is considered a “value” option, it was very clean, comfortable and well decorated! Additionally, it’s only 5 minutes by free-shuttle to the park entrance.
I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Universal Studios. It’s great for families, couples and groups of friends.
Click here for Universal Endless Summer: Surfside Resort rates and to book!
You Can Share a Wand
When visiting Harry Potter World, part of the fun is getting a wand from Olivander’s shop. There are so many to choose from and it’s such a unique experience.
Around both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade you will be able to use your wand to perform spells, and they’re honestly pretty cool! You can make water shoot from fountains, flowers bloom, and make a music box play – just to name a few.
That being said, the wands are expensive, at $60 each. I recommend picking out one wand per group, and sharing it to perform the spells.
It might be a little less special to not have your own wand, but you realistically won’t use it again when you leave the park.
Try the Fun Treats – But They’re Not All Great
The most exciting part of Harry Potter World, for me, is all of the fun wizarding treats (especially the butterbeer!)
I made it my personal mission to try as many of the treats as possible, and many were very good! However, some were also super disappointing.
Check out my full post about the Best Treats and Butterbeer Snacks to Eat at Harry Potter World !
But as a quick preview:
- Definitely have lunch at the Leaky Cauldron or the Three Broomsticks
- Have butterbeer ice cream from Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour
- Drink butterbeer at the Hogshead
- Have a Fizzy Orange Juice at the Hopping Pot
Eat Lunch Early (or late) to Miss the Lunch-Rush
The service at both the Leaky Caldron and the Three Broomsticks is relatively quick, likely due to the semi-limited menu. However, the lines get very long around 12pm.
In order to avoid waiting in line for lunch, I recommend going early, around 11am, or later in the day, after 3pm.
The food at these restaurants isn’t gourmet or life changing, but it’s such a fun experience to eat at both. I definitely recommend making time for it!
Check Out All the Shops
I could spend all day at Harry Potter World walking around and checking out all of the fun and unique shops. A few of my favorites are definitely Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop (Diagon Alley), Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes (Diagon Alley) and Honeydukes (Hogsmeade.) All of these are candy/sweet shops – so I think it’s pretty clear what my favorite kind of store is!
However, in addition to the fun candy shops, there are also lots of souvenirs you can buy, including wands, robes and other collectables.
Many of the shops in Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade sell similar items, but each shop has its own unique souvenirs. I recommend checking out all of the shops first, and then going back to buy your favorite items.
PRO TIP: When purchasing items in Universal Studios and Island of Adventure, ask for them to be “sent to the front of the park.” This means that your purchases will be sent to City Walk (where you exit the park) and will be waiting for you after you leave the park for the day!
I highly, highly recommend this option! It makes it so much easier not to have to carry tons of bags around the park with you.
If you’re staying at an on-site hotel, and are staying for multiple days, you will also have the option to have your purchases sent directly to the hotel’s front desk! This is another fantastic option, and something to absolutely take advantage of.
When planning a trip to Harry Potter World, one of my biggest tips is to save room in your suitcase! I really didn’t plan on buying anything – but I ended up with lots of candy, a wand and souvenirs for friends. Trust me, you’ll definitely purchase things as well!
Quick Harry Potter World Tips and Facts to Know
- Universal Studios: Diagon Alley
- Island of Adventure: Hogsmeade
- Get tickets in advance, and keep the QR codes on your phone
- You have early access to Island of Adventure (8am) if you’re staying at an on-site hotel
- The parks close at varying times throughout the year, from 6pm onwards
- City Walk is open very late, it closes between midnight and 2am
Harry Potter World FAQ
- I highly recommend staying in one of the Universal Studios on-site hotels as they come with many perks, like early park entry! There are tons of options to fit many budgets .
- Ticket prices range depending on the number of days you’re visiting the park. The more days you visit the park, the less expensive daily tickets become. Click here for prices and ticket packages.
- Diagon Alley, in Universal Studios, in my opinion is slightly better than Hogsmeade in Island of Adventure. This is because it’s less compact, and there are more shops and places to eat. Hogwarts Castle is located in Hogsmeade though, and there are more rides in this part of the park, so it does come down to personal preference.
- You don’t need specific tickets for Harry Potter World, as they are parts of other parks.
- As mentioned above, I recommend park hopper tickets so you can move between parks on the Hogwarts Express.
- You can only take the Hogwarts Express if you have park hopper tickets, as it moves between parks.
- I recommend spending at least two days in the parks, visiting both parks on both days.

Great guide for Harry Potter World. I haven’t been to the Orlando parks since I was a child, but this looks like a fun place for a Harry Potter fan!
Totally worth it to get the park hopper pass – the Hogwarts Express is a can’t-miss for any Harry Potter fan! Also the suggestion to have your meals at the off hours is a great tip – we found that gave us the best chance to actually enjoy the food and not feel rushed. Thanks for this great post.
Oh my gosh I’ve wanted to go to Harry Potter World for so long! It looks incredible. Your tips like not getting an express pass for weekdays and downloading the app are genius – I didn’t know about these things before. Thank you!
Wow! This looks like such a fun park. I imagine that the rides are amazing. I’ve read all the books and seen all of the movies and the scenes would lend themselves to very imaginative rides. And, I too, would love the Butterbeer.
I am a big Harry Potter fan and I have visited the London studios. I must say that after reading your article, I will definitely visit the Orlando one when I’ll be nearby. It looks amazing!!!
I am a huge #potterhead this looks like such fun! I’ve only been to the London studio tours and that is small scale compared to this, definitely visiting Orlando for the sole purpose of HP World in my lifetime haha!

The Best Methods Of Transportation In Harry Potter
The amazing fantasy world author J.K. Rowling created for the Harry Potter series has proven to be enduring, with fandom seemingly never tapering off. Readers around the world remain captivated by the truly magical universe in which her stories are set — and understandably so. The appeal is multi-faceted, but one important factor is how creatively and meticulously she planned the books, down to details like the modes of travel witches and wizards utilize .
When it comes to transportation, the wizarding world has a lot to offer. Forget Muggle staples like subways, bicycles, and planes; witches and wizards can use their magic or their world’s unique creatures to get where they need to go. These options don’t all seem safe, per se, but they’re certainly all interesting. Every journey can be an adventure, as we saw in the books.
There’s plenty of variety in travel selection thanks to Rowling’s inventive mind. Some options require skill that makes them difficult, while others necessitate a strong stomach. Others still are even illegal. For witches and wizards, not all travel choices are created equal.
Below are the best methods of transportation included in the Harry Potter series, ranked from best to worst, mostly based on convenience, practicality, and comfort, but with enjoyment factored in.
1. Apparition
As long as a witch or wizard can pull off Apparating and Disapparating , this is the fastest, most convenient method of travel. The danger of splicing, though, is no joke.
Traveling by portkey requires less skill than Apparition. Witches and wizards can bewitch an inanimate object to get them and any companions where they need to be at a set time. It may not be as fun as some of the other options, but it serves its purpose.
3. Broomstick
Broomsticks are best for short distances and clear weather, and they offer gorgeous views. Of course, they’re not ideal for those afraid of heights.
4. Floo Network
Floo powder works great for getting around the magical network, as long as the traveler doesn’t mind a lot of spinning. There is also the risk of being dumped out in the wrong fireplace, so it’s important to speak clearly.
Trains like the Hogwarts Express can transport large groups of people easily and comfortably. However, bad things do sometimes take place onboard, like the occasional Dementor search or an unpleasant run-in with a fellow passenger. But hey, there’s a snack cart with Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and other goodies.
6. Enchanted Vehicles
Sirius Black’s motorcycle, which he gave to Hagrid, and Arthur Weasley’s car might not have been exactly legal, but they had some excellent features. Vehicles can be customized through different spells, offering increased trunk space and invisibility, for example. Plus, they don’t have to deal with traffic jams.
7. Flying Horse-Drawn Carriage
Beauxbatons Academy sent its students and staff to Hogwarts in a flying carriage pulled by a dozen winged horses. It was also big enough to house all of them while they visited, so they didn’t even have to worry about accommodations.
8. Magical Ship
The Durmstrang Institute’s ship traveled from one body of water to another below the surface, magically not needing to cross land. Steering apparently isn’t that difficult, because Headmaster Karkaroff made his students do it while he stuck to his cabin.
9. Knight Bus
The Knight Bus isn’t ideal for those who get carsick, but it is a good option for those who urgently need a ride. A stranded witch or wizard just needs to stick out their wand arm, and it will come.
10. Flying Carpets
The enchanted objects were made illegal because it was too easy for them to end up in the possession of Muggles, but they are fondly remembered as a great mode of transportation for the whole family.
11. Hippogriffs
When treated with the proper respect, hippogriffs are safe for riders, but their sharp beaks and massive talons are to be taken seriously. They don’t sound all that comfortable to ride, but if the choice is a nerve-wracking ride or a return to Azkaban (as it was for Sirius), hop on.
12. Vanishing Cabinet
These magical cabinets aren’t easy to come by, so their convenience is limited. Those with access to a pair, though, can journey from one to the other.
13. Thestrals
While thestrals are relatively gentle and can get witches and wizards from one place to another quickly, the fact that many people can’t see them — and don't want to pay the price to be able to — complicates matters.
14. Time-Turner
This magical device isn’t about getting from point A to point B; instead it will transport users to another time . Doing so carries a lot of risks, so their use is understandably closely regulated.

To mark two decades since the release of the first film, the cast, directors, and producers reunited in an hour-and-a-half special called 'Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,' to dish on old secrets and funny memories. For example, during the special, which aired on New Year's Day on HBO Max, Emma Watson revealed she "fell in love" with Tom Felton and crushed hard for years even though he always saw her as his little sister. Broadway licensing global opens up licensing for harry potter and the cursed child school edition.
NEW YORK , May 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadway Licensing Global , alongside Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender , and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, proudly announces that licensing for the school edition of the award-winning and record-breaking Broadway and West End play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is now available worldwide. The school edition is specifically tailored for high school and secondary school productions and can be licensed for productions beginning as early as fall 2024.
"We are thrilled that schools now have the opportunity to bring the magic of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to their stages," said producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender , "and we cannot wait to see how the show comes to life at high schools and secondary schools all over the world."
In September 2023 , upon announcement of the acquisition of the amateur licensing rights to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , BLG began collaborating with the original creative team of the show to adapt the script for high school and secondary schools. This process has involved creating a new, shorter runtime, and making the intricate staging of the original production more accessible for school theatres. The goal of the process was to ensure production success for any school which licenses the show.
In addition to the license, an official production package – including actor scripts, required music, media kit, and more – will be shipped to schools beginning this summer, in advance of fall productions.
"From the beginning of this partnership with the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child team, our intention was to put educational theatre programs first, which meant creating a version of the show that is manageable for schools of all sizes, budgets, and technical capabilities – and is still fun to produce." says Ted Chapin , Interim Chief Executive Officer of BLG.
High school and secondary school educators can license show now by visiting: LicenseCursedChild.com .
