Zadar port is placed in the heart of the city. This position provides direct access to shopping places, sightseeing and other contents in the town. The passenger transfer to the port is fast and easy because walking distance between different localities is not more than 20 minutes. Only smaller ships dock here.

A new passenger terminal was officially opened on April 24, 2019 at Zadar Cruise Port. The new Zadar terminal building extends over 18,000 square metres on two floors. Larger cruise ships dock here.

As the citycenter is far away (4 KM) from the terminal in Gaženica, the authorities offer a shuttlebus, at the discretion of each of the cruise lines, that wll drop you near the sea organ, which is close to the center of town. Approx 15 Euro if this service is in operation

There is a local bus stop at the port and it can get you to town for a few Euros. First you should take the bus #9 (Liburnija bus line) which takes you to the central bus station. There, change buses and take #2 or #4, they will take you straight to the old town. The buses run every 30 min approximately. Buses #2 and #4 will drop you off at the Sea Organ in old town.

The sea organ, which, depending on the wind and waves, you can hear as soon as you get off the ship.

The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the world's first musical pipe organs that is played by the sea. Simple and elegant steps, carved in white stone, were built on the quayside. Underneath, there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and – depending on the size and velocity of the wave – musical chords are played. The waves create random harmonic sounds.

Sightseeing:

The town of Zadar with its region boast an important and rich artistic patrimony dating from Roman times to early Christian times and early Croatian medieval times; above all there are many sacred buildings worth visiting together with the extraordinary testimonies of a millenarian culture.

The marble, traffic- free streets of the Old Town are replete with Roman ruins, medieval churches and several fascinating museums. Massive 16thcentury fortifications still shield the city on the landward side, with high walls running along the harbor.

Zadar is located opposite the islands of Ugljan and Pašman, from which it is separated by the narrow Zadar Strait. The promontory on which the old city stands used to be separated from the mainland by a deep moat which has since become a landfill.

Shopping and food.

The City of Zadar is not only known for its historical and cultural monuments but also for its amply supplied vegetable and fish markets on the peninsula (a part of the old city). The market is daily supplied with fresh fruit and vegetables from the rich hinterland of "Ravni Kotari", the fruitful waters of Lake Vrana and the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. Judged by the variety of goods on offer, it is one of the largest markets in Croatia. The market is not only frequented for supplies, but also for the bustle, the abundance of color and the haggle with the local women merchants.

In the direct vicinity of the "green market" is the fish market with an exceptionally diverse offer of fish and seafood, as well as salted sardines by the piece. The fish market is situated close to the promenade, where lively colored fishing boats of all sizes lay crowded in the morning. The fishing tradition in these parts is very old (1995 marked the 1000th anniversary since the first written account of fishing in Croatia – Sali / Dugi Otok) and the most famous fishing town on the Adriatic is situated on the island of Ugljan. Just as at the market, here too it is necessary to haggle with the merchants, and, even if on that particular day you end up without fish on your menu, you will still have enjoyed the scent of the sea and heard the arguments of fishermen in the local dialect.

The centre of Zadar stretches along a small peninsula, with two very pleasant waterfront promenades running along it to the north and south. To the north and south are two very pleasant promenades, the northern one offering a panorama of prestigious boats and yachts, while the southern one offers a view of the coastline of the island of Ugliano in front. The two streets meet to the west at Istrarska Obala, whose southern corner is home to the famous Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje), the piano on the sea. This is a magical place to listen to the music produced by the crashing of the waves on a shoreline made of piano keys.

The central street of the old town is Siroka Ulica, also known as Kalelarga. Here you will find all kinds of shops, restaurants and services. The promenade is dotted with side streets where it is very pleasant to stroll.

One of the symbols of the city is certainly the ancient Roman Forum, today the centre of city life, with the Church of St Donatus next to it and the Church of St Mary opposite. The Church of St Mary houses a permanent exhibition of Gold and Silver of Zadar, with one of the most important collections of precious objects in Croatia from various parts of Europe. On the same square, the Archaeological Museum takes you on a tour of this magical place with over 2000 years of history.

The city walls of Zadar were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 and are definitely worth a visit. The Land Gate dates back to the mid-1500s and effectively marks the entrance to the city. Also worth a visit is the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, with its beautiful façade and the possibility of climbing the bell tower to admire the view from above.

The Rector’s & Providur’s Palace is a recently renovated historical and cultural complex where congresses, temporary exhibitions and concerts are held. Also of interest is the Museum of Ancient Glass, with over 5000 pieces from the first century BC to the fifth century AD.

Zadar is also a starting point for excursions into the interior of Croatia or along the Dalmatian coast. Some of the easily accessible islands will immediately transport you back in time. The island of Rava, for example is an explosion of fruits and produce. The island of Iz has a prehistoric past and is famous for its ceramics. The island of Ist, which is a fishermen’s paradise is unspoilt, with only one small town offering tranquillity and nature.

An unforgettable excursion destination is the Vrana Lake Nature Park in the interior of the region. Croatia’s largest natural lake offers an oasis of serenity and beauty. Walking, cycling and birdwatching are just some of the activities on offer. The Zrmanja River, which can be visited in the Velebit Nature Park is also particularly fascinating.

Vrana Lake

Whether it’s for a few hours or a whole day, Zadar will prove to be a cruise port of call full of charm, history and natural beauty. A stroll through the small streets of the city centre will provide a magical atmosphere of small restaurants and corners suspended in time. But even the fashionable area with its shops and popular places is a pleasant and lively time ashore.

The surrounding area, which is also well catered for by local tour operators, offers the possibility of visiting the interior and the natural beauty of the island, before returning comfortably to the ship.

Zadar, Croatia Port Guide

Zadar Port

You’ll find Zadar port in the beautiful Meditteranean country of Croatia; a country we are aching to visit  According to Wikipedia, Zadar is the oldest inhabited Croatian city which explains its vast amount of culture and history on offer. Zadar is located in Dalmatia which is the coastal region of Croatia. With it welcoming an average of over 450,000 tourists a year it is clearly a popular place for holidaymakers. All you need to do is google it and you can see why! Stunning coastal towns, beautiful beaches and plenty of roman history – there’s something for everyone!

zadar cruise port guide

The cruise port for Zadar has close proximity to the airport and the country uses the Croatian Kuna as its currency – worth bearing in mind if you are used to cruising to countries using the Euro. Previously, before the newer Gazenica port was built, most ships had to dock on the smaller peninsula. The new Gazenica port is 5km southeast of the town making it easy and relatively quick to reach where you want to be. Transfers between the port and the historic centre take around 15 minutes, with shuttles costing about €15 for a return trip. It is best to take a shuttle or a pricer taxi as its quite a walk from the port to the city and you don’t want to waste too much time getting there when you only have limited time to explore! Once you are in the old town of Zadar you can happily explore the town on foot.

Exploring the Old Town

If you chose to stay local to Zadar and explore the Old Town then there’s plenty to keep you occupied. The town has a weekly market which is the perfect opportunity to mingle with locals and see what Croatian delights are on offer. The town also has a lovely promenade to explore and plenty of places to stop and grab a drink and a bite to eat al fresco.

If museum and history are your thing then there’s plenty of museums on offer in Zadar. The National Museum of Zadar is a great place to head to for an insight into Croatian life, it’s natural history and collections of fine art. There are various parts to the museum and frequently changing exhibitions. Ticket prices vary depending on which parts of the museum you want to visit so we recommend researching ahead of time and planning your visit.

If travelling with children or those with inquisitive minds then be sure to check out the Museum of Illusions . This quirky museum is full of optical illusions and displays to trick your mind! From looking at their website it seems there is ample opportunity to get some cool Instagram shots here too if that’s your thing! The museum is open every day and costs 70kn (£8.20) for adults and 50kn (£5.80) for children, which seems a pretty reasonable price for something a bit different.

For those interested in glasswork then the Museum of Ancient Glass is likely to be a place of interest. The museum is located in the 19th century Cosmacendi Palace and has amazing views over the Jazine Harbour. The museum is home to rare glass collections dating back to the Roman era. Admission costs 30kn (£3.50).

The Cathedral of Sant’Anastasia (Zadar Cathedral) can also be found in the old town and dates back to 1177. It has been submitted to the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites and looks simply stunning. It’s also the largest church in all of Dalmatia and has a very tall bell tower offering views across the beautiful town below.

Something super unique to see in Zadar is the famous Sea Organ . Located on the peninsula’s north tip these pretty marble steps lead down to the waterfront and create a wonderful sound. The reason behind the sounds is a set of 35 musical tubes that the sea pushes against causing whooshing whistling sounds to create random musical melodies. Pretty unique I would say!

Excursions and Heading Further Afield

If you fancy taking a cruise excursion or heading on an adventure further afield that Zadar’s oldtown then there is plenty of choices. As well as offering tours around the main sights of Zadar many cruises will offer excursions to the Krka National Park, Paklenica National Park and trips to the towns of Sibenik and Trogir.

Krka National Park is one of Croatia’s natural beauties – an amazing park named after the Krka River and consisting of incredible waterfalls and loads of leafy green vegetation. The park includes the magnificent looking Skradinski Buk falls and is super photogenic. The park is roughly a 45-minute journey from the port by coach transfer and excursions cost around £55 from a cruise line or £48 from tour companies such as Get Your Guide .

zadar cruise port guide

The equally beautiful Paklenica National Park is also offered as an excursion offered by most cruise lines visiting Zadar. The park is about 45-minutes from the port and visitors will be greeted with ravines, canyons and mountains when they arrive. The park is suitable and well know for hiking and some cruise tours will include a guided hike as part of the excursion. MSC Cruises offers an excursion to the park with a guided hike for £73 per person which includes transfers and packed lunch.

zadar cruise port guide

The towns of Sibenik and Trogir offer a stunning insight into some wonderful cultural and historic Croatian gems. Trogir is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site and so is well worth the visit! Tours to visit these unique towns start at about £50 from most of the big cruise lines.

zadar cruise port guide

If walking tours are your thing then you can book one through Get Your Guide for £12 per person. This 90-minute tour around the old town of Zadar includes a sample of Maraschino liqueur and a taste of Pag cheese – yum! Local walking tours are often a great way to see the main sights, learn from an enthusiastic local and stretch your legs to burn off those cruise buffet calories!

We love the sound of cruising to Zadar and have wanted to visit Croatia for a few years now! I think if we were to dock here we would choose to visit the Krka National Park – it just looks amazing!

Zadar Croatia Port Guide

Zadar’s notoriety is slowly growing. A necessary, comprehensive ferry system connects Croatia with the Adriatic islands nearby, and more cruises stop in Zadar each passing year. Zadar’s centuries-long history of occupations before it became part of Croatia makes it a melting pot of types of architecture, home to scattered Roman ruins and also unusual modern art installations like the waterfront Sea Organ. While on your cruise to Zadar, Croatia, stop into Old Town for delicious eats or a coffee break, or take a walking tour of the city’s many ancient churches. History buffs will love the Zadar Archaeological Museum, and kids will adore the Sun Salutation exhibit at the waterfront.

Zadar is beautiful but quirky, historic yet modern, conveniently in proximity to Saharun Beach for swimming or Paklenica National Park for challenging hiking and climbing. The area could be disjointed or incohesive, but it’s not. It’s clear that Zadar is a place where people really live, not just pass through or vacation in, and that makes it special in its own right. While on your Mediterranean cruise , you’ll appreciate how Zadar manages to be uncrowded, unfussy, and unforgettable all at once.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to zadar.

Less crowded than Dubrovnik’s Old Town, you’ll discover this gem of a promenade sets Zadar apart. There are cafes, shops, and three sides of fortress walls dating back to Venetian occupation in the 16th century. Meander around Old Town for a while and you’ll immediately understand why hurrying just doesn’t suit this Croatian town.

Saharun Beach

One of Croatia’s most beautiful, off-the-beaten-path beaches is just a ferry ride from Zadar. Unlike other beaches along the Dalmation coast, Saharun has unusually white sand and waters that seem a little too turquoise to be real. Take a swim, sunbathe on the beach, or collect shells as you walk the shore.

The Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje)

It’s one of the quirkiest attractions you’ll ever see. The Sea Organ along the waterfront of Zadar is an art installation that makes sound when its underwater pipes take in water from incoming waves. When the water is shallow, it sounds like a sigh. When the waves are powerful, so is the Sea Organ’s “music.” Words don’t fully encapsulate the beauty of the experience, so don’t miss it on your Zadar cruise.

Foodies will love a day trip to Pag Island, where they can taste-test the island’s signature Pag cheese. It’s one of Croatia’s most famous foods. Strangely, Pag Island’s crater-filled landscape could fool you for the moon. It’s dramatic and a little intimidating, but a stop at this island will charm you with its devotion to cheese, wine, and excellent food. Head into the village of Novalja for a taste of vibrant nightlife.

Zadar Cathedral

This Romanesque, Gothic cathedral has some huge bragging rights—it’s the largest church in the entirety of the region of Dalmatia. After near destruction during World War II, the cathedral has seen been restored as one of Zadar’s most visited historic sites. Make the bell tower climb for unbeatable views of Zadar from the summit.

Learn More About Zadar Shore Excursions

Top things to do in zadar, head to the zadar archaeological museum.

Zadar’s prehistoric history and its strong Roman influence during various occupations is beautifully honored at the Zadar Archaeological Museum. Tickets are only 30 KN and free for kids. Head into the museum for an indoor, air-conditioned adventure if you need a break from exploring Old Town.

Peer Into the Museum of Ancient Glass

Come to the Museum of Ancient Glass in the morning for glass-blowing demonstrations or to watch bead-making. You’ll be amazed by the sheer volume of glass that has been miraculously preserved despite Zadar’s turbulent history. This Museum is a quick pit stop, and a must for anyone wishing to learn more about Roman influence on this corner of Croatia.

Catch the Sunset from the Waterfront

After you’ve seen the Sun Salutation and heard the Sea Organ on the waterfront, stay for a pink-and-orange Croatian sunset unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Stick around a bit longer, and the Sun Salutation monument will light up once night has officially fallen. A perfect way to rest and unhurriedly soak up Zadar.

Day Trip to Paklenica National Park

If you’re itching to get outside while on your cruise to Zadar, Croatia, it’s just a 45 minute drive from Zadar to Paklenica National Park. Head northeast deeper into Croatia for hiking trails, steep canyons, and opportunities for cycling, too. Climbers, rejoice! Paklenica National Park is a climber’s paradise, and one of the most visited climbing sites in all of Croatia.

See 7 Waterfalls at Krka National Park

Discover this national treasure while you’re on your Zadar cruise. After all, it’s only an hour’s drive from Zadar to Krka National Park. Go hiking on along the Roški Slap, where you can swim in the designated areas near the waterfalls. Take the walking trails to reach the cascading waterfalls. Some of the ruins within the park date back to Roman occupation centuries earlier. The area is immaculately kept, showing Southern Croatia’s true beauty along every footpath.

Culture & History of the Zadar Cruise Port

Zadar’s history is nothing short of fascinating—the city has changed hands countless times, seen dozens of occupations, faced destruction, and somehow persevered through it all. Though evidence of settlement dates back to the Neolithic era, the Romans began to invade parts of what is now modern-day Croatia in the 2nd century BC. Evidence of the Roman colonization is still apparent in Zadar.

By the 10th century, Zadar was brought under the umbrella of Croatia as part of a treaty in 1069. Attacks and invasions by Venice, then Turkey, then the Austrians took over in the early 1800s. The Italians occupied Zadar after Austria-Hungary collapsed starting in 1918, but World War II brought a lot of damage to the city. Post World War II, new importance was placed on reconstructing and rebuilding Zadar as not only a beautiful city to live in, but as a place where tourism could flourish. Zadar’s culture is a rich amalgam of all of this—its monuments and ruins reflect various periods of history, and Zadar is critically important for understanding Croatia’s history, literature, and arts.

Today, Zadar is placing more importance than ever at maintaining a strong economy and making the city appealing to tourists. Though Dubrovnik holds the spotlight and welcomes many more tourists each year, Zadar holds its own, and its quieter vibe and welcoming spirit give visitors a much needed break from Dubrovnik’s crowds.

Zadar Port Facilities & Location

The port of Gaženica is only three or so mile from downtown Zadar. Of the twelve piers at the port, three of them service cruise ships and six of the piers are dedicated to Croatian ferries. It’s also an easy walk to explore Zadar from the port of Gaženica, so if you haven’t booked a shore excursion, you can also find plenty to see solo. Zadar continues to grow in popularity as a cruise destination each year, so updates and improvements on the port facility are frequently being made to improve infrastructure and traveler experience.

Getting around Zadar is easier than ever, as the town continues to adapt to tourism and make improvements to their already efficient transit system.

There are bus routes covering the entire city of Zadar, and buses in the city center of Zadar run every fifteen minutes. Should you need to get to the airport, there is also a bus shuttle to the Zadar Airport from downtown.

Taxi is also an option for you, and taxi drivers are allowed into the port area to pick up passengers and take you wherever you need from there. Uber has also been available in Zadar since 2017.

Once you get off the free shuttle, Zadar’s old town is fairly walkable during your stop, with easy-to-navigate streets made of beautifully smooth marble.

Shopping Near the Zadar Cruise Port

You won’t find much shopping at the cruise port itself other than souvenir stands, but head into downtown Zadar for more chances to shop. Take a shuttle from the cruise port of Gaženica into town.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Croatia is called the Kuna (KN), and some businesses will accept Euros as well. You’ll want to keep a little Kuna on hand to enter attractions and sightsee while you’re in Zadar. Find ATMs throughout the city, and the exchange bureau can be found in Old Town. Tipping isn’t mandatory in Croatia, but rounding to the nearest Kuna or leaving a 10% tip for great service is always kind.

Where is the ferry port in Zadar?

The ferry port of Gaženica is the main travel port, located on the outskirts of Zadar, between Zadar and the village of Bibinje. It’s about 4-5 km from the city center and 7 km from the airport.

The smaller Old Town Port is situated at the Sea Promenade, which is in the heart of the Old Town, just a stone's throw from various sites such as the church of St Donatus.

How to get to Zadar port?

The Gaženica port is easily accessible from the Old Town and the airport. You can get here by local bus, taxi/private ride or on foot from neighboring points of interest. From the Old Town, take bus #2 or #4 to the central bus station. There, change buses and take bus #9 to the port.

The romantic seaside city of Zadar has always been handy for its ferry connections to some of Croatia's best islands. However, it’s more than a jumping-off point - it has quiet wonders all of its own. Home to ancient Roman ruins, historic churches, cosmopolitan cafes, lively markets, and crystal-clear waters, the North Dalmatian city is one of the coolest places on the Adriatic. And as opposed to Split or Dubrovnik’s crowds, there’s an easy, laid-back pace of life here.

So, if you are looking for a vacation that combines relaxation and culture , Zadar is a great option. The city has something to offer everyone, from families to couples to solo travelers . Three days are plenty to discover the sights in the Old Town as well as to venture out to explore some of the nearby national parks and islands.

How to get to Zadar

The fastest and most convenient way to get to Zadar is by ferry, bus or plane.

Reaching Zadar by ferry is the best way to get in the right mood for holidays in the Adriatic Sea, with direct connections from other mainland cities in Croatia (Pula and Rijeka), the Adriatic Islands and the Italian port city of Ancona .

To get there by bus instead, you will find routes from all the major towns, cities and places in Croatia, such as Zagreb, Split , Dubrovnik , Sibenik, and more.

Lastly, you can catch a flight to Zadar Airport , which is located about 11 km from Zadar Old Town and is connected to other major Croatian and European cities. There is a public bus that leaves the airport to the Old Town every few minutes.

What to do in Zadar

Spend a morning wandering Zadar’s main market close to the harbor on the eastern side of the peninsula, where local vendors sell various Croatian delights 6 mornings a week.

If museums and history are your thing, don’t miss the Archeological Museum and the National Museum of Zadar . Then head to the Forum , the marketplace built by the first Roman emperor Augustus 2,000 years ago. You’re free to inspect the chunks of columns and broken pillars, there’s nothing behind glass or kept under lock and key. If you’re traveling with children, check out the Museum of Illusions .

After having lunch at Pet Bunara , or “Five Wells” square, take a short stroll along Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV, the western embankment, to relax, sunbathe and visit the city’s 2 famous contemporary installations. The Sea Organ and The Greeting to the Sun , are both best experienced at sunset . In fact, Alfred Hitchcock called Zadar's sunset the most beautiful in the world so, don’t miss it.

If you fancy heading on an adventure further afield than Zadar’s Old Town, also known as the Zadar Peninsula, then there are plenty of choices. Admire the impressive waterfalls in the Krka National Park and the wild mountains in the Paklenica National Park or go canoeing on the Zrmanja River.

Of course, Zadar is well placed for island-hopping too. So, hop on a ferry to Silba, Pag, Dugi Otok, the islands of the Kornati National Park, and many more, and take your vacation in Croatia to the next level!

Cruise port scams and schemes: Here's how to avoid them

Michelle Couch-Friedman

When Harry B. and his wife boarded Royal Caribbean 's Freedom of the Seas, they were looking forward to a relaxing tropical getaway. Buying $10,000 of skin care products definitely wasn't part of the plan, but that's exactly what Harry inexplicably did when the cruise ship made a port stop in the Bahamas.

Harry — whose last name I'm concealing because he is highly embarrassed about what happened and believes he is a victim of a crime — suspects that to convince him to buy all that stuff, the merchant must have spiked the cocktails that were served to him with drugs.

However, as a consumer advocate who has fielded thousands of complaints from travelers with post-vacation buyer's remorse, I suspect something a little less sinister as the culprit.

I call it ... vacation brain.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Travelers often let their guard down during vacation, doing things they would never consider doing at home. Things like impulsively buying high-ticket items without any real knowledge of the product they're purchasing.

Unfortunately, scammers and schemers know this, and when they see those big cruise ships sailing into port, they're at the ready.

So, cruise ship passengers, you had better be ready for them, too.

Here are the latest schemes and outright scams that cruise ship passengers need to be aware of when disembarking their ship during a port of call.

A 'free' gift during your cruise port visit

zadar cruise port guide

Take a stroll down any shopping area during your port visit, and you will likely be offered a free bracelet or other little bauble. The lure of a complimentary trinket is often how a legitimate or not-so-legitimate jewelry outlet will get a cruise ship passenger into the showroom.

If you accept that free bracelet and go inside, you'll be handed off to a salesperson who practices his or her sales craft thousands of times per week. These folks see cruise ships as a supply ship of potential customers.

You'll be greeted with friendly banter and then bombarded with high-pressure tactics aimed at getting you to purchase a piece of jewelry to "commemorate" your trip. The salespeople know their time with you is limited, so the pitch will have a sense of urgency and the jewelry you're eyeing will likely be "limited quantity."

Many cruise ship passengers are completely unprepared for the hard sell and find it difficult to extricate themselves from these stores without buying something.

Related: The 10 biggest mistakes cruise ship passengers make on port days

This particular scheme is not a scam, necessarily. Many reputable jewelry stores operate in cruise ports around the Caribbean, a region known as a great place to buy duty-free jewelry.

The problem occurs when cruise ship passengers are dazzled in the moment by the beautiful jewelry and the charming salesperson — and end up spending money that wasn't in their budget. After the deal is done and the traveler is back on board the ship, the dazzling light dims and buyer's remorse sets in.

How not to get scammed : If you're not in the market to buy jewelry during your cruise, do not accept any free bracelets or other trinkets. No merchant wants to give you something for free. They want to subject you to a high-pressure sales routine. Just keep walking and buy a "free" bracelet for $1 at the local market instead.

If you are in the market to buy jewelry during your cruise, make sure to research the merchant and the type of gems you're interested in beforehand. Additionally, set a budget and stick to it no matter how hard the sales pitch becomes.

The discount excursion scam

zadar cruise port guide

If you've disembarked from your cruise with no real plans for your day, you're a prime target for an excursion scam.

This type of scheme involves a friendly person typically in a temporary kiosk or operating out of a storefront. He or she will tell you about an exciting adventure hosted by a local person. This type of excursion costs much less than the ones offered by your cruise line, but there is a different price to pay.

On this excursion, your driver will take you to places where he will receive a commission for bringing you there. Invariably, you'll arrive at a private factory for a tour of the facility. The goal is to get you to spend your money buying whatever product is being made there. Many cruise ship passengers report making purchases just so the tour will end.

When you finally are taken back to the port, hopefully in time to make your ship's embarkation, you'll be frazzled and short on cash with a lot of unexpected trinkets.

Related: Cruise scams: Why you should toss that 'free cruise' card in the trash

How not to get scammed : It's always a good idea to use a reputable tour seller, such as Viator, to check what kind of non-cruise line-sponsored excursions are available in your port of call before disembarking. You'll be able to read reviews from real people who have already taken the tours listed there and see the cost as well.

If you decide after you've already left the ship that you would like to take an excursion, visit the tourism information booth that will most likely be located somewhere close to the pier. You want to make certain that you're booking a tour from a legitimate, licensed company.

The one thing you don't want to do is to book an excursion on the fly from someone who approaches you on the street. This is almost always an error you will regret later — after you return from your factory tour.

Can you hold this for just a second?

Many tourists around the world have been confused by a stranger on the street who needs help to hold something for "just a second." These scammers, and yes, these are outright scammers, mean to confuse their victims and act as though there is a legitimate reason for victims to hold their shell or other item. Once that thing is in the victim's hand, they're fully involved in the scam.

Next, the stranger tells the victim how much they owe him or her for the item they're holding. The victim's protestations will only lead to the scammers reiterating that they bought the item. Some cruise ship passengers have even reported being threatened by the formerly friendly person when they didn't hand over some cash.

How not to get scammed : Never take any item offered to you by a stranger. In the Bahamas, the item is often a giant conch shell, but I've seen other scammers who offer smaller shells, tree branches and other odd detritus. It doesn't matter what the item is — it's just a scheme to extract money from you.

Unofficial, unmetered taxis

zadar cruise port guide

Yet another pitfall for cruise ship passengers to avoid during a port stop is using unmetered taxis.

Often cruise ship passengers disembarking from their ship want to quickly leave the crowded port area and explore. Their goal is to see the best the destination has to offer. But some of the cars waiting have a different goal.

Tourists should never get in unofficial, unmetered taxis.

I can think of multiple reasons why it is unsafe to hop into an unvetted car with a stranger in your port of call. First, that person might not even be licensed to drive a vehicle, much less a taxi. It is not unusual for unlicensed drivers to be operating in the Caribbean. You're risking your life if you get into an unofficial taxi.

Beyond that safety issue, the driver of an unmetered taxi likely has a goal of taking you for a ride — financially. Cruise ship passengers report traveling in circuitous routes to make it appear as if they've been driven long distances, when in reality they haven't gone far at all. The cost you'll be charged in the end will reflect your lengthy journey.

Of course, this type of shenanigans can also occur with a metered taxi — although a legitimate cab driver is likely less willing to risk his or her job over a few extra bucks. Still, it's always wise to have an idea of where you're going and what you should expect to pay to get there and to confirm all prices before you take off on your drive.

How not to get scammed : To protect your safety and your wallet, always use an official transportation service. These usually have some type of placard or license on display, depending on your location. If you're not sure what an official taxi looks like at your destination, you can stop by the tourism booth and check before getting into any car.

A free cocktail and a fabulous travel club

zadar cruise port guide

Many confused and distraught consumers have contacted me after coming home from a trip with a pricey travel club membership they don't actually want. That's always a disturbing situation because a consumer advocate can't do much if a traveler has signed a legally binding contract in a foreign country.

This scheme usually involves a legitimate travel club company that sends its scouts down to the cruise port to collect potential "victims." The lure in this scheme is a free daypass to a beautiful resort, drinks, food and fun during the passenger's visit.

Cruise ship passengers are scooped up from the port and transported to a tropical paradise.

There is, of course, a catch. While sipping numerous cocktails and suffering from that vacation brain I mentioned earlier, cruisers are required to attend a travel club presentation. That's where things go all wrong. Many booze-filled tourists have found themselves signing a travel club contract at the end of that presentation.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Unfortunately, once they sober up, they don't want the travel club, but they've signed a legally binding contract. And they're stuck because, unlike in the U.S. where consumers typically have at least a three-day rescission period, many travel club and timeshare contracts abroad have none. Once the contract is signed, the deal is done.

How not to get scammed : Before accepting a free daypass anywhere, make sure that you understand what your obligation is in exchange. If you're not a person who can resist a hard sell, don't go. Travelers who come home from vacation with the burden of a surprise unwanted travel club have flooded my helpline for years.

Never sign a contract for anything after you've had even one cocktail. If a salesperson presents you with a contract after you've been served one or more drinks, jolt yourself into reality. If you think you might be interested, ask for a copy of the details so you can take that document with you and do your research later. If the company refuses and tells you the deal is only good if you sign it right then, decline and ask to be taken back to the port.

A free facial and an unexpected $10,000 purchase

zadar cruise port guide

This brings us back to Royal Caribbean passenger Harry who paid $10,000 for questionable skin care products.

The free facial scam is a well-known scheme around the world. "Facialists" will lure you into their facilities with the promise of a free treatment. Once you accept that offer, you'll be alerted that your face has a lot of problems. But no worries! They can sell you an amazing product that will be able to fix it all.

In Harry's case, he says a salesperson practically dragged his wife inside the store.

My wife and I fell victim to this well-orchestrated scam of high-pressure sales beginning with the handing out of free skin treatment samples in front of the store. I resisted, but they grabbed my wife by the hand and offered her a 10-minute face treatment. I followed her in so she wouldn't get suckered into buying anything. They began applying the product while also pouring us what was supposed to be Champagne. To try to escape the gathered group of salespeople hyping the effectiveness of the product, I reluctantly agreed to a $200 purchase.

But that was only the beginning of this port-of-call fiasco. Now the salespeople knew they had their victims nibbling on the hook.

Related: 10 things you should never buy on a cruise ship (or in port)

As the alcohol continued to flow, they brought out additional products, which they told Harry would cause his bald head to sprout hair. He told me he realizes how ridiculous this sounds now, and that's why he suspects it wasn't just Champagne in his glass.

"We were then given hard alcohol and, I think, drugs. The heavy hitter deal closer brought out a light wand device that was purported to enhance the skin treatment. To make a long story short, by the time we left, with this special deal we were given, we had a $10,000 charge on 2 credit accounts."

The dazed and confused couple gathered the bags filled with all the items and made their way back aboard Freedom of the Seas.

Harry says they shared their experience with their adult children on the ship but did not report their suspected drugging to Royal Caribbean. They did make a formal complaint to the cruise line several weeks later.

That delay in reporting this scam was a mistake. By then, any evidence of misdeeds by this "merchant" was gone, and Harry had taken all the products home, even though he didn't want any of the lotions or the magic wand device. Predictably, his bald head hadn't grown any hair and his wife's appearance didn't undergo a miraculous change. None of the products did anything they were supposed to do.

The $10,000 bill, though, was very real.

Since that day, Harry has tried every possible way to get a refund for what he believes to be over-the-counter face cream. He filed a credit card dispute, which Chase rejected based on the fact that he received everything that he purchased that day. The receipts say "nonrefundable and all sales are final."

Next, he filed a complaint with the attorney general in Florida claiming elder abuse by this merchant. Of course, the Bahamas is not under the jurisdiction of any U.S. attorney general, so that complaint went nowhere.

Finally, Harry reached out to me in the hopes that I might be able to convince Chase to reverse the charge. He also suggested that other government organizations in the U.S. should investigate this merchant.

I explained to the frustrated couple that U.S. law doesn't apply in the Bahamas, and the nonrefundable terms and conditions of the skin care products make the sale final. Chase can only reverse the charge if the products weren't received, and that isn't the case here. Harry walked out of the store with exactly what he agreed to buy.

Bottom line

Unfortunately, some vacation brain mistakes are irreversible, and Harry's is one of them. He hopes others can learn from his awful situation and avoid making the same errors he did.

Livorno Cruise Port Guide &The Best Things to Do

Does your cruise stop in livorno italy here’s everything you should know about the livorno cruise port..

On the west coast of Italy sits Livrono, a lively port city that is the gateway for cruisers to two of Italy’s most iconic cities: Pisa and Florence.

Perched within Tuscany, this colorful city is the third-largest in the region. Being so conveniently located near many of Italy’s popular attractions, there really is an abundance for cruisers to see and do.

As a travel advisor who specializes in cruises, I have extensive knowledge of cruise ports and the best shore excursions for each.

In this article, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about Livorno Cruise Port and how to best plan your visit.

I can plan your excursions (and cruise) for you FOR FREE!

Planning a cruise or excursion can be overwhelming and stressful. Let me take care of it for you – I can book your cruise or excursions at no additional cost.

Where is Livorno Cruise Port Located?

Livorno Cruise Port is located within the main Port of Livorno which sits right beside Livorno city, on the northwest coast of Italy.

Within the Tuscany region in Italy, Livorno is the closest cruise port to Pisa and Florence.

Pisa is a 40-minute taxi ride or a 20-minute train journey from Livorno Cruise Port and Florence is a 1.5-hour taxi ride or train journey from the cruise terminal.

The Livorno Cruise Port is vast with berths that can accommodate up to 8 cruise ships at any one time. The berths are dotted around the harbor, on different piers.

Beside each berth are a taxi rank, tourist information center, car rental stand, and opportunities to book day trips and tours.

How to Get to Livorno City Center from the Cruise Port

The cruise port is located within a working industrial port and to journey from the cruise port to Livorno city, you’d have to travel through the working part of the port which is in fact not permitted on foot for health and safety reasons.

The good news is that the port offers a shuttle service from the cruise terminal to Piazza Grande, in the city center.

From Piazza Grande, it’s a 30-minute walk to Livorno Centrale, the main train station in the city.

Alternatively, there is a taxi rank beside every cruise terminal so you can grab a taxi directly to your destination.

Are There Free Shuttles From Livorno Cruise Port?

There are shuttle buses to Livorno city center offered to every cruise ship passenger. However, the cost depends on your cruise liner. Some cruise lines offer shuttles for free to their cruise passengers, and others charge a fee that you can expect to be around €5.

Can You Walk into Livorno from Your Cruise Ship?

It isn’t possible to walk from the cruise terminal into Livorno city center.

Health and safety regulations don’t permit walking in the industrial port. Even if it was allowed, the distance between the cruise ship berths and the city is very great and it would take you over an hour to walk into Livorno which isn’t practical.

There are however shuttles available that will take you from Livorno Cruise Port straight into the city of Livorno dropping you at Piazza Grande, a key square in the middle of the city.

Are there Taxis Available from Livorno Cruise Port?

Yes, there is a taxi rank beside every cruise ship in Livorno Cruise Port which will have enough taxis in it to accommodate all passengers looking to get a taxi.

Best Shore Excursions from the Livorno Cruise Port

Livorno Cruise Port is one of the busiest cruise ports in Italy due to its fantastic central location near many of Italy’s most extraordinary attractions.

There’s a host of things to see and do nearby. I’ll delve into some of my favorites below.

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa

Only a 40-minute drive or 20-minute train ride from Livorno city center, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa really is a must for anyone visiting Livorno! The 56-meter high 14th-century tower can be found in the heart of the city of Pisa.

The tower is located beside the impressive Cattedrale di Pisa (Cathedral), and Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptist Church), enabling you to marvel at a number of incredible landmarks on your visit.

Trains run between Livorno and Pisa a couple of times per hour making it a quick and convenient way to journey between the two cities. From Pisa station, it’s a 20-minute walk to the famous tower.

Guided Tour

  • Small group walking tour for a more personalized experience
  • Expert local guide with insider knowledge
  • Pre-reserved tickets for the leaning tower of Pisa

Florence and Pisa

  • Port pick up and drop-off
  • Professional guide
  • Transport by air-conditioned vehicle
  • Guaranteed on-time return to the pier

Alternatively, buses run every 10 minutes between the station and Torre 1, a bus stop just outside the square where the tower is found.

You can book a guided tour of Pisa which includes admission tickets  such as this one.

Another way to reach the Leaning Tower of Pisa is on a guided tour from Livorno.  This full-day tour  combines a visit to the tower with a trip to Florence, another incredible city in Italy.

2. Florence

Florence is the vibrant capital of the Tuscany region in Italy. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city is famed for its stunning medieval architecture and monuments as well as museums.

It’s no surprise that a day trip to Florence is a must for many cruisers who arrive at Livorno Cruise Port.

Florence can be reached via train. Trains run from Livorno to Florence several times per day, roughly once per hour. The journey is direct (you don’t need to change trains) and takes 1 and a half hours each way.

Livorno Shore Excursion to Florence

  • Hassle-free round-trip transfers from Livorno to Florence
  • Convenient pick-up and dropoff points at the cruise port and city center
  • A complimentary map of Florence’s historic center to explore on your own
  • About 4.5 hours of free time to take in the Renaissance highlights

A taxi between Livorno Cruise Port and Florence also takes 1 and a half hours each way but is considerably more expensive than the train.

Perhaps the easiest way to visit Florence is via an arranged shore excursion with a guide, such as  this one . The tour takes you directly from Livorno Cruise Port to Florence and allows you over 4 hours to see the highlights of the city.

3. Cinque Terre

Just north of Livorno is a beautiful stretch of coastline known as Cinque Terre, characterized by colorful settlements which are stacked upon cliffs in bays that arc around turquoise waters.

The area encompasses 5 fishing villages, which make up part of the Cinque Terre National Park , an area of outstanding natural beauty.

You can journey to Cinque Terre from Livorno Cruise Port via taxi. Alternatively, you can book a tour.  This private tour  spans over 8 hours and visits different villages along the coastline.

4. San Gimignano

Nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany is this charming town, oozing with history and encircled by 13th-century walls. The UNESCO World Heritage Site town is famous for its incredible medieval architecture and striking 11 towers.

Not only is the town itself gorgeous to admire, but it’s surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards.

One of the best things to do in San Gimignano is to try some of the delicious locally-produced wine and produce.   This food and wine-tasting tour   has exceptional online reviews and allows you to sample local cuisine from a traditional organic farm.

Another great way to visit the town is on a shore excursion tour, such as  this one , which visits both San Gimignano and Volterra, another gorgeous town.

5. Fortezza Vecchia

One of the main attractions in Livorno itself is this 11th-century fort which is right in the middle of Livorno port. It’s a spectacular fortress that is well worth admiring either before or after your main shore excursion.

This fortress, also known as the Old Fort, is the symbol of Livorno. It’s open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9am to 8pm and is free to visit . There is a cafe right next to the fort called Fortezza.

6. Wine Tasting

Tuscany is an area that’s renowned for its wine production. Therefore, if you’re into your wines, embarking on a wine tasting tour really is one of the best ways to get to know the region.

Just 1 hour north from Livorno via road is Lucca, a city perched on the Serchio river. Nestled at the base of the Apuan Alps, this striking city is steeped in history, housing beautiful ancient churches, a clock tower and even traces of a Roman amphitheater, which are hidden behind the city walls.

It’s a 45 taxi ride to reach Lucca . Alternatively, Lucca can be reached via train. In order to visit the city, you’ll have to change trains in Pisa. The train to Pisa from Livorno takes 20 minutes and the second train from Pisa to Lucca takes 30 minutes.

Tours of Lucca from Livorno are also available. Sitting just north of Pisa, many tours combine a visit to both cities, such as  this one.

Livorno to Lucc

  • Free WiFi on-board On-board
  • Walking tour in Lucca with escort
  • Free map of Lucca and Pisa
  • Access to the Leaning Tower

8. Livorno City

For your day docked at Livorno Cruise Port, you may simply wish to explore the surrounding city, which although not as well known as Pisa or Florence, houses its own unique gems.

One of the best ways to explore the city is via a food and market tour.  This walking tour takes you to Livrono’s central market, known as Mercato Centrale.

This is in fact one of the largest markets in Europe. At this lively market, you’ll be able to sample local dishes, snacks, and drinks.

If you are interested in seeing the key sights of the city then a   hop-on hop-off bus tour  of Livorno may be what you’re looking for.

Getting From Livorno Airport to the Cruise Port

The closest airport to the Livorno cruise terminal is Pisa Airport which is 20 km (12.4 miles) north of Livorno.

The easiest way to travel between Pisa Airport and Livorno Cruise Port is by taxi or  private transfer  which typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

🚘 Book a private transfer to the cruise port here

Taking the train is also an option, although it takes considerably longer and may be challenging if you have lots of luggage.

It’s roughly a 20-minute walk between Pisa Airport and Pisa Centrale, the train station. It’s then a 20-minute train journey to Livorno station, followed by a 30-minute walk to Piazza Grande, where the shuttle buses to the cruise port stop.

Places to Stay Near Livorno Cruise Port

If you are looking for a convenient place to stay near Livorno Cruise Port then Agave in Città , a highly rated apartment with fantastic views over the canal is a fantastic option.

Boasting exceptional online reviews, this accommodation is conveniently located very close to the cruise port, just 600 meters away. A concierge, bar, and indoor pool are stationed at the property.

A little further away from the cruise port is 900 B&B , a charming B&B in a beautifully restored building that serves a selection of fresh pastries for breakfast.

Hotel Universal is another great option, although it sits just outside the city. Perched right on the seafront, the views from this hotel are exceptional.

Best Time to Visit Livorno

The best time to visit Tuscany is between April and October when the weather is more favorable. The height of summer (June, July, and August) will provide the best weather. The summer months are also the busiest time to visit Livorno and key sights can be very crowded.

➡️ To strike the best balance between good weather and fewer crowds, I’d recommend visiting Tuscany outside of the holiday season. April, May, September, and October are all great months.
