Things to do in Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth born and bred Lydia Jones knows the coastal university town and popular holiday resort inside out. Read on for the ex Pobol y Cwm actress’ insider guide to find out why it’s the perfect base to tour The Coastal Way.

Why Aberystwyth?

Aberystwyth, meaning the mouth of the river Ystwyth, and commonly and colloquially known simply as ‘Aber’. It sits smack bang in the middle of the rugged  Ceredigion  coastline, making it a cracking short break destination. Located comfortably equidistant to the cathedral city of St Davids in  Pembrokeshire  and the surfers’ haven of Aberdaron at the Western tip of the  Llŷn Peninsula , it’s the obvious base to tour the 180 mile  Coastal Way .

The bustling town centre

It's one of the biggest towns in Mid Wales and home to the University of Aberystwyth,  Aberystwyth Arts Centre   and Bronglais Hospital, helping make this coastal town a diverse and vibrant place to live, work and visit.

Aberystwyth town centre is spread around variety of interesting roads - the street names and architecture reflect the history and growth of the town since the Middle Ages. You can expect to hear plenty of people using Welsh as they go about their daily lives. Most of the town centre is easy to get to from the railway station and car parks by the retail centres.

There’s lots of lovely independent shops in Aberystwyth, so if you are stocking up on holiday gifts, bring an empty case.  Polly  boutique is a favourite for ladies contemporary fashions and accessories,  Coastal Vintage  does what it says on the tin and  Ystwyth Books  is a small charming second hand bookshop where it’s easy to get lost in the racks for a few hours.

Siop y Pethe  is such a beautifully named shop, meaning the ‘shop of cultural things’, but it sounds so much nicer in Welsh. As the title suggests, it sells a little bit of everything. Local artist Lizzie Spikes has a delightful shop called  Driftwood Designs , she is also responsible for the window designs of menswear shop Cactws , and if the men in your life like quirky socks, make a whistle stop here too.

Where to eat and drink

Aberystwyth is a foodie heaven, with an abundance of options for all tastes and budgets.  Ultracomida , a remarkable Spanish / Welsh deli and tapas bar, that has warmth and atmosphere in spades. Cocktails at  The Libertine  are also recommended, as well as a quick (or lengthy) stop in  Bañera , aptly named as it’s situated in Bath Street (Bañera meaning ‘bath’ in Spanish). Here cocktails and the hefty wine list are the order of the day.

Aberystwyth prom

A visit to Aberystwyth is quite impossible without a walk, jog or mindfulness moment on the mile long Victorian promenade. The seafront also boasts the oldest pier in Wales (it was built in 1864), which offers the second best vantage point of Aberystwyth. And the best vantage point is at the end of north beach’s promenade, atop the 430 feet that is Constitution Hill.

Culture and heritage

Pen dinas and aberystwyth castle.

A local landmark and a post-meal calorie killer to walk off all that lovely food is a walk up  Pen Dinas Hill , an Iron Age hillfort, to take a closer look at the 1850s monument, erected as a memorial to the first Duke of Wellington. Also, try and make time to see  Aberystwyth Castle  (because as we all know it’s a crime to visit a town and not visit its castle). The English castle was built to keep the Welsh out in the 13th century, at the same time as Flint, Rhuddlan and Builth Wells’ castles were erected.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the National Library of Wales

The previously mentioned Aberystwyth Arts Centre is worth a visit, as is its neighbour the  National Library of Wales , home to historic books as well as the smallest book in the world. It’s also hosts painting and film exhibitions, and you can sit in comfort watching archive films from across Wales.

Aberystwyth Camera Obscura

At the top of Constitution Hill, at the north end of the prom, you’ll find the world’s largest Camera Obscura , which provides a bird’s eye view of more than 1000 square miles, in a 360 degree sweep around Aberystwyth. The Camera Obscura is accessible via the  Aberystwyth Cliff Railway . The longest cliff railway in Britain is a treat for all ages and offers superb views of the town, particularly the promenade’s famed autumn and winter starling murmurations, so keep your cameras handy.

And finally… if you’ve caught the BBC, S4C and Netflix TV series  Hinterland , you couldn’t have escaped without being spellbound by the setting. The hit show was filmed in and around Aberystwyth, so there’s lots of opportunities to spot locations, particularly if you head a little further afield into the Ceredigion countryside. A rather special way of making your way to the classic Hinterland location of Devil’s Bridge is via the  Vale of Rheidol Railway .

Where to stay?

If a little bit of old school opulence is your thing, then check out  ivy clad Nanteos M ansion , it has has sumptuous rooms a divine restaurant and a wealth of history to read up on , including claims on the Hol y Gr ail .

If you’re on a smaller budget, there’s plenty of options too, with ‘out of term time’ (but peak season) bargains to be had at the University. While you’re checking out the  accommodation on offer at the University , you’ll also see that the  Aberystwyth Arts Centre  forms part of the wider complex, and being one of the largest arts centres in the UK, there’s guaranteed to be a show or an exhibition to suit your taste. There’s also a superb café providing home cooked food, using locally sourced ingredients and a range of shops selling Welsh and English language books, as well as a craft and design shop, selling ceramics and prints from local artists, homeware, jewellery, stationery and cards. There’s even a dance school shop for those budding ballerinas and tap dancers.

Mid-range accommodation options include the recently restored  Castle Hotel  in the ‘old town’. Borth’s three mile sandy beach, seven miles north on the Coastal Way has self-catering accommodation, camping, touring and static caravan sites. When the tide is out you should check out the ancient sunken forest at the north end of the award winning, blue flag beach.

Taron Egerton

One of Aberystwyth's more recent famous exports is Taron Egerton, star of 'Eddie the Eagle', 'Kingsman - The Secret Service' and smash hit film 'Rocketman' for which he's just won a Golden Globe.

Following Welsh actor Taron Egerton's success at the Golden Globes, we take a look back at BAFTA Cymru's 'An audience with Taron Egerton' to hear how his childhood in Aberystwyth helped develop his talents.

His family moved to Aberystwyth when he was in his early teens. Taron began his acting career with the Aberystwyth Arts Centre's youth theatre group before being accepted into RADA aged 19. He regularly heads home to catch up with family and friends and claims 'Wales is absolutely where my heart is'.

The 10 best things to do in Aberystwyth

By Kerry Walker

Aberystwyth Sea front Wales

If ever there was a town to make you want to up sticks and move to Wales , Aberystwyth would be it. With a knockout location in Cardigan Bay, a pinch of Victorian folly, plenty of student sparkle, high-calibre cultural sights, and one of the UK ’s hottest food scenes since SY23 scored its first Michelin star this year, Aber – as locals fondly call it – is so lovely you can almost forgive it the weather.

Whether you arrive over hill and hedgerow lane, by train or via the coastal road, Aberystwyth always comes as a surprise. For who would expect to find a proper town with bookshops and boutiques, cool bars and delis out here on a west coast limb, all roughed up by the Irish Sea? Certainly not us.

These are the 10 best things to do in Aberystwyth.

SY23 restaurant

1. Eat at SY23

Dinner is at 7.30pm sharp at SY23 , but you ought to book now if you plan to go this summer as there’s a four-month waiting list. It’s worth it. Nathan Davies (of Great British Menu fame) has zhuzhed up Aberystwyth’s food scene no end, with menus singing of locally foraged, farmed and fished ingredients, skills finessed in top kitchens. It has paid off big time: in 2022 the restaurant got its first Michelin star and the Michelin Guide’s much-coveted ‘Opening of the Year award’.

Served in an intimate, funkily lit space that’s as indigo blue as the bottom of the ocean, the 10-course tasting menu is mind-blowing. The flavours swing seasonal but might include hand-dived scallops with seaweed and burnt butter, turbot cooked whole over the fire with cockles and sea vegetables, meltingly tender lamb with a pungent hit of wild garlic, and cox apple with wood sorrel. If you can’t score a table inside, nab one of the cool firepit spots on the terrace for Welsh tapas and wine.

A murmuration of starlings in Aberystwyth

2. See starling murmurations at the pier

Opened in 1865, Aberystwyth’s pier was the first in Wales. It’s only half the size it was in its Victorian heyday and not nearly as grand. But walk along North Beach at dusk in autumn or winter, when the sea turns to quicksilver and the last embers of sunset burnish the sky, and you’re in for a treat. The pier is your front-row seat to the best free show in town: the murmuration of starlings. These migratory birds flock to Welsh shores in the colder months and around 50,000 of them roost under the pier. Observing them swoop like storm clouds above the waves is pure magic.

View from Constitution Hill

3. Climb Constitution Hill

Constitution Hill’s slate cliffs fling up above the town like natural fortifications. You can hoof it up the windy trail to the top (at 97m high, it’s no Everest), or do as the collared and corseted Victorians once did and take the Cliff Railway . Opened in 1896, the funicular is one of Britain’s longest, but it moves with more of a stagger than a sprint at four miles per hour. The hill has astonishing views reaching across the great arc of Cardigan Bay to the mountains of Snowdonia. While up here, dabble in a little Victorian-era titillation at one of the world’s largest camera obscuras.

On the way up (or down), look out for the white metal bar at the end of the seafront promenade. Kicking it has long been said to bring luck, though the origins of the tradition are hazy, with theories ranging from warding off evil spirits en route to the gallows to scoring dates.

Ceredigion Coast Path

4. Hike the Ceredigion Coast Path

Wrapping around the country’s entire seaboard, the Wales Coast Path is a beauty and it celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022. If the weather is passable, strike out the five-mile trail from Aberystwyth to Borth. Starting at Constitution Hill, the walk heads up and over gorse-clad cliffs to Borth’s three-mile scoop of sand. There are sensational views across the storm-smashed Irish Sea to Bardsey Island and dolphins can often be spotted. Time your Borth visit with very low tide and you’ll see the stumps of a petrified forest submerged 4500 years ago.

If you’re game for walking further, another three miles brings you to Ynyslas, where dunes fizz into the sea at the Dyfi National Nature Reserve .

Castle ruins in Aberystwyth

5. Explore Aber’s past

Stand among Aberystwyth’s medieval castle ruins and you’ll need a child’s vivid imagination to picture its past as one of Edward I’s whopping fortresses. But the turret remains are still pretty romantic, with long views out to sea. On nearby King Street, you’ll be stopped in your tracks by the architectural pizzazz of the Gothic-revival Grade I-listed Old College , with its turrets, towers and leering gargoyles, bearing the 18th-century hallmark of John Nash.

Diving deeper into local history, the Ceredigion Museum , atmospherically housed in the revamped Edwardian Coliseum theatre, pieces together the past in artefacts from Bronze Age burial urns to nutshells elaborately carved by sailors.

Jonahs

6. Find the hottest lunch spots

Even on the drizzliest day, Ultracomida feels like sunshine, with its bottle-lined turquoise walls and summery buzz. This nicely chilled deli has vinos, tapas and vermouths you’d willingly pay good money for in Madrid . The tortilla is perfection with a slick of aioli, and dishes like air-dried tuna with vine tomatoes, goat’s cheese, almonds, honey and aged vinegar are simple but divine.

For more of a Middle Eastern vibe, seek out art-slung Medina for glorious mezze. Or if fish is your thing, try Jonah’s , a fishmonger dabbling in lunchtime waters, with stunningly fresh day specials like dressed crab with citrus mayo and sourdough and tandoori salmon tacos.

Aberystwyth Sea front Wales

7. Plan a night on the town

Aberystwyth’s nightlife is as mellow as you’d expect in a town rocked to sleep by the sea. In a mid-terrace house, Bottle and Barrel ease you into an evening in a living room-sized space that somehow manages to squeeze in a staggering array of Welsh spirits, ciders, meads and craft beers, from Menai oyster gin to IPAs zinging with tropical fruits.

Untrue to its name, Rummers Wine Bar is an old-fashioned boozer, better known for pints than fine wines. Lodged in a former grain warehouse by the harbour, it has a cracking line-up of gigs, open mic nights and DJs at weekends. The vintage-chic Libertine gets its groove on at weekends, too, with DJ sets, a party vibe and expertly mixed highballs and punches.

Italian deli Agnellis

8. Browse indie shops

Dive into Aber’s backstreets and you’ll find a tempting array of boutiques, bookshops and craft shops. First up: Bridge Street, where you can rewind to the 1950s in Italian deli Agnelli’s . Let Mario (originally from Milano ) sweet-talk you into buying everything from stunning prosciutto, pasta and salumi to Sardinian pecorino and Sicilian cannoli. A couple of doors down is Coastal Antiques , where you can pick up everything from antique chests to kid-leather gloves, while Ystwyth Books , just around the corner, is fabulous for second-hand books. Swing over to Red Vintage on Eastgate for eye-catching local art prints, upcycled lampshades and crafts. They also arrange silk-printing and lamp-making workshops.

9. Climb the hill for culture

Aber’s cherry-on-the-cake National Library of Wales hides millions of rare and precious books, maps and manuscripts in its vast, beautifully vaulted halls. Top billing goes to the 13th-century Black Book of Carmarthen , the oldest existing Welsh text, and one of Chaucer’s texts penned by his scribe, Adam Pinkhurst. You can easily fritter away an afternoon here among the musty books and Welsh-themed art (Turner even has a couple of works here). Don’t leave without glimpsing the medieval Nanteos Cup, a humble wooden mazer bowl that some believe is the Holy Grail.

Just down the road is its cultural sidekick, Aberystwyth Arts Centre . One of the UK’s biggest art centres, it hosts first-class comedy, opera, drama, dance and concerts, and punchy art exhibitions with a Welsh focus.

Vale of Rheidol Railway

10. Ride the rails

The Edwardians gave Aberystwth the Vale of Rheidol Railway , a narrow-gauge steam train that has been chuffing 12 miles from the coast to Devil’s Bridge in the Cambrian Mountains since 1902. Grab a window seat for the crazily scenic journey through the Rheidol Valley, where red kites and buzzards ride the updrafts. At Devil’s Bridge , you’ll have an hour to gasp at the waterfalls that dash down wooded cliffs into the black hole of a gorge. Their savage romance inspired Turner to paint and Wordsworth to write a poem in which he called them the ‘dread chasm’. The railway runs from late March to early November.

It is easy to get lost in the town's winding streets, lined with shops and cafés that have kept their classic beauty with historic architecture and character.

Aberystwyth, Wales

One of the top things to do in Aberystwyth is take the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway to the top of the towering cliffs that surround the town to see hundreds of miles into the distance, soaking in the views the same way visitors did in the late 1800s. Aberystwyth is the largest town in Ceredigion , with an important history, as evidenced by the relics left behind from the Aberystwyth Castle.

Vale of Rheidol Railway

Devil's Bridge is home to one of the best waterfalls in Wales , with a lot to see and do, like hiking the waterfall loop and seeing the three bridges that gave the area its name. There are small eateries and ice-cream shops close to the falls to enjoy before your return back to Aberystwyth.

Vale of Rheidol Railway sign

The Vale of Rheidol Railway was built in 1902 through the heart of the Rheidol Valley by Sir James Szlumper to serve as a tourist attraction, but also to give people in the remote valley access to Aberystwyth.

Over time, the railway was used in the mining trade to transport items like minerals and timber into Aberystwyth. The railway has now returned to serve visitors once again as an educational way to learn about the town and history of the surrounding area.

You can catch one of several departures a day, but in the busy summer season, you will want to book tickets in advance.

Aberystwyth Cliff Railway

A vertical 430-foot trip up the cliffside to Constitution Hill on the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is a memory in the making that takes you to one of the best spots for views of the entire area. This is known as a Funicular Railway, using a counterbalance system to transport the cars up and down the side of the cliff.

The cliff railway opened in 1896 as an entertainment option for people on holiday. Visitors in the 19 th century ventured up to Luna Park on the peak of the cliff to enjoy the bandstand, ballroom, and a tearoom.

Also at the top is the largest Camera Obscura in the world . Its 14-inch lens and 1,000-square-mile view is exciting to experience, especially for kids. The original Camera Obscura disappeared in the 1920s, when visitors lost interest, but the replica is just as impressive.

Stay to enjoy the views and the café at the top. When you are ready to head back down, no problem – the cars switch from top to bottom every 10 minutes.

The cliff railway is open seven days a week from April to October and weekends other times of the year.

Aberystwyth Castle

When it comes to exploring castle ruins Aberystwyth Castle is a gem. This is a fantastic, free place to visit for the day and take the kids to crawl around 13 th -century ruins. This is a unique experience from other castles that you might visit because you can walk on the rugged castle remnants versus only viewing from around it.

Aberystwyth Castle was considered one of the best and most famous castles in Wales in part because it was one of the first of a series built under King Edward I. The construction for the defense system that it provided was considered cutting edge in the 13 th century with features like walls within walls. Though very little of it is left to see you can still get up close to examine the construction details of this once revered fortress in Aberystwyth.

Surrounding the castle is greenspace on the hill. Take advantage of the high vantage point to sit on the benches overlooking the ocean, peer through the public telescopes, or get fish n' chips to go and enjoy a seaside picnic.

This is a family-friendly stop with many things to do. Walk on some of the trails in the park, including the kite discovery trail, animal discovery trail, and Elenydd stories discovery trail. There is a skills park, playground , and an animal puzzle trail for children.

Walk by the lake, enjoy lunch at the café or enjoy an afternoon of mountain biking or horseback riding .

Silver Mountain Experience

Just a 10-minute drive from Aberystwyth is another great family outing at the Silver Mountain Experience that gives insight into the silver mining industry that was prevalent in the region from the 1800s through the early 1970s.

Get a first-hand experience of what life was like more than 250 years ago for miners at the Silver-Lead Mine in the Cambrian Mountains. Learn about the Welsh mining heritage, the life of miners, and the difficult working conditions as you experience the underground tunnels that have been carefully restored. The site also has original buildings that were used when the mine was in operation, and artifacts and photographs in a museum.

Also fun for young children are the performance experiences that showcase Welsh myths and folklore. These positive and engaging experiences let kids follow clues to find a friendly dragon while enjoying a story and performance.

1. Walk Along the Seafront Promenade

Aberystwyth’s mile-long Victorian promenade is one of the most striking areas of the town. Here you will find brightly coloured townhouses lining the waterfront.

One of the best places to view the promenade is from Constitution Hill by North Beach (see below for details on how best to get there).

The promenade is the perfect place for a stroll and to take in the fresh sea air as visitors to the town have been doing since Victorian times.

Be sure to dive into one of the seafront cafes or grab an ice cream for that ultimate seaside experience.

See location on Google maps

2. Explore the Town Centre

The town centre is packed with narrow streets and interesting architecture dating back centuries. You will find plenty of independent artisan shops selling everything from locally made arts and crafts to local produce.

The town is home to a number of churches dating back to the Middle Ages, such as Saint Michael’s and St Paul’s churches. Aberystwyth also boasts a prestigious university, the National Library of Wales, an arts centre and many cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs.

Get lost in the narrow streets as you explore this beautiful Welsh town full of charm and character. You won’t fail to find a great place to stop for lunch as the town has a large selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs serving cuisines from around the globe.

Aberystwyth beaches.

3. Have a Day at North Beach

The sand at Aberystwyth’s beaches is a lot darker than the golden sands of Devon or Cornwall . But don’t let this put you off, as the town’s beaches are holders of the prestigious Blue Flag award for cleanliness.

The beach is predominantly dark sand and shingle (small pebbles) so flip-flops or other footwear is recommended for walking and swimming.

Picturesque North Beach is one of the most popular Aberystwyth attractions and is backed by the Georgian and Victorian townhouses than make up the promenade.

You will find everything you need for a day at the beach from public toilets to donkey rides, ice cream vans and cafes.

The beach is patrolled by lifeguards from June to September between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm.

4. Take a Trip up Constitution Hill

Constitution Hill lies at the north end of North beach and rises up almost 100 metres (328 feet) above the town. From here you have stunning views out across Aberystwyth, Cardigan Bay and the mountains of Snowdonia National Park.

The peak is home to a Camera Obscura (see below), points of historical interest and a gift shop, café and children’s play area. The incredible views make Constitution Hill one of the best places to visit in Aberystwyth!

You can walk up to the summit following the Ceredigion Coast Path, which takes around 25 minutes.

For those looking for an easier way to reach the summit, you can take Britain’s longest funicular, the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway to the top of the peak. Another option is to take the tram up and walk down.

Explore Aberystwyth by bike.

5. Enjoy Peaceful South Beach

The South Beach is similarly made up of dark sand and shingle but is a lot quieter than its northern counterpart.

This section of coast stretches from the town harbour to Aberystwyth Castle and is popular with surfers thanks to the bigger waves that hit the southern end.

South Beach is also patrolled by lifeguards making it a good option for families looking for a quitter stretch of sand.

South Beach has a native population of porpoises and if you are lucky you might even get to see some of these magnificent creatures in the surf!

6. Take a Ride on the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway

Aberystwyth Cliff Railway has been ferrying people up Constitution Hill for over one hundred and twenty years.

The funicular railway was opened in 1896 and was electrified in 1921. It was refurbished in 2014 and now carries pleasure-seekers on a 778-foot (237 metre) track up above the town at a comfortable 4 miles per hour.

An adult ticket costs £5.50 one way or £6.50 return. Trains run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.

7. Marvel at the Views from the Camera Obscura

A camera obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens which projects an inverse image onto a wall or other display and dates back to the seventeenth century.

You can find camera obscuras across many towns and cities, usually placed in an elevated position to give panoramic views. And Aberystwyth’s very own camera obscura is no exception.

The town first had a camera obscura, popular with the Victorians, in 1880. It was relocated from the castle to Constitution Hill for better views, but by 1920 has fallen into disrepair.

Thankfully the camera was restored to its full glory in 1985 and now uses one of the largest lenses in any camera obscura in the world.

Located at the top of constitution hill, the camera offers magnificent views of Aberystwyth, Cardigan Bay and much of the Welsh coastline and mountains, making it one of the best Aberystwyth things to do!

Entrance costs just £1 and it is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

8. Explore the Ruins of Aberystwyth Castle

Aberystwyth Castle was first constructed in 1277 under English King Edward I when he was warring against the Welsh (though a castle has stood in the town since Norman times).

The castle passed back and forth between the Welsh and English for hundreds of years. Once England and Wales were on peaceful terms from around 1408 the castle began to fall into disrepair.

All that is left today is the ruins of what was once Wales’s mightiest castle. However, these ruins on the edge of Cardigan Bay are a brooding echo of history and a fantastic place to explore.

Parts of the old towers remain standing, and you can explore different parts of the structure from the ancient moat to staircases and tunnels.

Entrance is free and the grounds are open 24 hours a day.

9. Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum

This museum dedicated to Ceredigion’s history, culture and landscapes is housed in an old Edwardian theatre.

The Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum houses different exhibitions detailing Wales’s important history, from photography displays to over 60,000 objects from neolithic times to the modern day.

The museum holds regular workshops, yoga classes, exhibitions and more so be sure to check the website to see what’s on.

Opening hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm daily. No entrance fee makes the Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum one of the best free things to do in Aberystwyth (though consider leaving a donation)!

10. Visit the National Library of Wales

The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth is housed in a large Georgian building on the seafront and has a collection over 6,500,000 books.

The library is free to enter and has a reading room (ticket needed), exhibits, a shop and café. The library was set up to make learning about Welsh culture and history accessible to all.

Exploring the library is a great option if you are looking for things to do in Aberystwyth in the rain. You can search the online database for books, publications, newspapers, maps, photographs and more.

The library is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

11. Visit the Aberystwyth Lifeboat Station

Aberystwyth has had a lifeboat since at least 1861 when the first lifeboat station was built. It was the first such station to house an inshore (meaning coastal) lifeboat and the brave crews of Aberystwyth have received 13 awards for gallantry!

It’s possible to visit the lifeboat station, but you must book online in advance and can’t just drop in (though you can go and have a look at the building, and potentially witness a launch if you a re lucky).

12. Explore Aberystwyth Harbour and Marina

The town has had a thriving harbour and fishing industry since the 18th Century and now sports a modern marina.

The Harbour sits at the mouth of the Rheidol and Ystwyth rivers as they spill out into Cardigan Bay. The harbour is a pleasant place for a stroll to take in the many fishing boats and pleasure craft busily coming and going from the port.

13. See “The Book”

The Book is a large, slate sculpture of an open book situated in the centre of the town. The slate and marble sculpture is engraved with images and there are letters on the ground beneath it which represent the words from the pages.

The sculpture was created by the Welsh sculptor Peter Nicholas. He chose a book to represent Aberystwyth’s connection to learning with the University and National Library of Wales.

14. Take the Vale of Rheidol Railway

The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a track that follows the beautiful Rheidol valley from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge 12 miles to the east.

The railway line opened in 1902 and you can still travel on a restored Edwardian steam train along the valley.

The journey takes you through woodlands, fields and into the rugged Welsh mountains. You can usually spot rare birds of prey such as red kites and buzzards circling on thermals high above the valley.

Adult tickets for the ride cost £30.00 and £2.50 for children, which is a round trip starting and finishing in Aberystwyth. See the website for the current timetable.

15. Hike Part of the Ceredigion Coast Path

The Ceredigion Coast Path consists of 60 miles (94 km) of wild and rugged coastline from Cardigan in the south to Aberdovy in the north. The trail is split into seven sections, two of which can be started in Aberystwyth.

The views from the Ceredigion Postcard are beyond spectacular. You can see all the way to the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline in the south, and to Snowdonia National Park in the North (home of Wales’s tallest peak).

If you are spending several days in Aberystwyth, you’ll have plenty of time to explore further afield. These are some of our favourite things to do near Aberystwyth.

16. Visit the Magic of Life Butterfly House

This indoor tropical house is home to a collection of rare butterflies, insects, fish, frogs and corals. This living natural history museum is one of the great places to visit in Aberystwyth for all the family, and especially those interested in the natural world.

The Magic of Life Trust is a registered charity and they aim to bring people closer to the natural world. The trust invests money in rural communities in Costa Rica and the Philippines where they source the butterfly larvae.

If you’ve ever wanted see a poison dart from or a glow-in-the-dark-scorpion, this is the place to do in (outside of the rainforest of course).

Magic of Life Butterfly House is located in the Rheidol Valley 10 miles east of Aberystwyth. Tickets cost £8.00 for adults and £6.00 for under 16s. The Butterfly House is open every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in summer and until 4:00 pm in winter.

17. Visit the Devil’s Bridge Waterfall

The Devil’s Bridge Falls (also known as Mynach Waterfall) is one of Wales’s most famous attractions. The falls cascade over a precipice and drop a staggering 300 foot (91 metres) into a clear pool below.

The English writer and poet William Wordsworth famously wrote about “the torrent at Devil’s Bridge” and the site has attracted millions of visitors worldwide.

There are different hiking paths at the falls ranging in difficulty from a short 10-minute walk to a tougher 45-minute trek.

The Devil’s Falls are located 12 miles from Aberystwyth and one of the best ways to get there is via the Vale of Rheidol Railway (see above).

Is Aberystwyth Worth Visiting?

Thanks to its long history, interesting Welsh culture, many attractions and beautiful coastal landscapes, Aberystwyth is definitely worth visiting. The only question now should be, which one of these things to do in Aberystwyth should I do first?

Best Things To Do Aberystwyth United Kingdom

Being a University town, the Aberystwyth nightlife is one to experience. Like lots of places in Wales, you can find boutique shops, local Welsh produce and unique local crafts in Aberystwyth shops but the following are the 8 best things to do in Aberystwyth!

1. Aberystwyth Beach and Aberystwyth Promenade

Lots of Aberystwyth tourism comes due to visiting the beach, promenade and Aberystwyth pier of the town. And for good reason. It’s something you must do on your Mid Wales trip for a scenic, enjoyable walk along the promenade from Aberystwyth North Beach near Constitution Hill to the south at Aberystwyth Castle.

Check out Aberystwyth tide times here .

Admire the flags flying all along the promenade while enjoying fish and chips, amusements in the arcade at the front of the pier and walk the length of the pier to see another perspective of Aberystwyth.

Aberystwyth promenade with flags flying from different countries

At the Aberystwyth South beach, grab a locally-made Honey Ice Cream but beware of the very brave and sneaky seagulls who will snatch the gelato straight from your hand like it did to my friend!

Shireen's friend with her stolen ice cream from a Seagull in Aberystwyth

Just behind South beach and the War Memorial, you can also visit Aberystwyth Marina and Aberystwyth lighthouse remaining in the nautical theme.

2. Aberystwyth Walks

There are some fun walks to enjoy around the town including walking the length of the promenade and pier, circular walk around the castle, many walks on the Aberystwyth coast, walk the Ceredigion coast to Mynachdy’r Graig and walk up and down Constitution Hill.

Aberystwyth beach and promenade from South Beach Aberystwyth

3. Aberystwyth Railway Station and Constitution Hill

If you want the best scenic view of Aberystwyth then either take the Constitution Hill walk as mentioned previously or for one of the best Aberystwyth activities, ride the Cliff Railway to get to the top of Aberystwyth Hill.

I recommend doing the following as I did: Catch one of the last rides of the funicular railway to the top of the hill, spend some time enjoying the views, watch the sunset, meditate, spot Wales’s highest peaks and photograph the area before taking a fun stroll back down the hill to the town.

  • Adult / Student one way ride = £4.50 / £3.50
  • Adult / Student return ride = £5.50 / £4.50

Tip: As a student town, look out for the many student discounts around!

4. Literary Things to See in Aberystwyth

Literary lovers will enjoy a trip to this seaside resort with a number of notable places to visit as well as having things to do in Aberystwyth when it rains!

One of the best places to visit in Aberystwyth, and all of Wales, is Aberystwyth National Library of Wales . It’s the biggest library in Wales, home to over 6.5 million books and the largest collection of Welsh manuscripts. Everything to do with Wales and Welsh life is preserved in this library and while the main language at the Aberystwyth town library is Welsh, English is widely used.

Here is home to the oldest manuscript in the Welsh language, over 800 years old!

Entry is free with a reader’s ticket but you need to register . Don’t make the same mistake as me and visit on a Sunday (or Saturday) because it closes. As a bookworm, I was gutted the Aberystwyth library was shut. But this is my excuse to return to this great town!

There’s an Aberystwyth bookshop or two to choose from including Welsh-only shops and the UK staple, Waterstones.

Aberystwyth was the home of Welsh poet , Dafydd ap Gwilym, so you can visit the county of his 14th century poems like Mis Mai and Y Gwynt.

There is also the Aberystwyth Art Centre which is explained more below under the museums heading.

5. kicking the bar.

This is my favourite thing to do in Aberystwyth as it’s an old tradition and something you HAVE to do when visiting the town!

This old tradition dates back to the 19th century and is exactly what you think. Kicking the bar!

At the North Beach end of Aberystwyth water edge, next to Alexandra Hall, and at the foot of Constitution Hill is a long, plain, white, metal bar. Legend says you must walk the length of the promenade and kick the bar at the end for good luck.

There are several myths as to how this tradition came about, some involving health reasons and others involving romance (typically) but it’s a fun thing to do in Aberystwyth and always nice to potentially bring good luck!

6. Aberystwyth Restaurants Pubs

There are many places to choose from to enjoy a nice meal in Aberystwyth including fish and chips on the pier, Ultracomida for Welsh/Spanish tapas, the seafood truck on Aber promenade called Pysgoty or posh dinner at a 5* hotel named Gwesty Cymru .

My top recommendation for Aberystwyth eating out is an Italian restaurant called Little Italy . We stumbled upon this beauty without pre-booking and managed to get the best seat in the house in what is one of the best Aberystwyth restaurants (and best meal from my entire Wales road trip).

The exterior had me first as Little Italy is a humble building with the Italian colours, the sign in English and Welsh, and down a few steps is a stable door as the entrance before the interior made me feel transported to Italy!

Exterior of Little Italy in Aberystwyth. Image shows the two windows with restaurant sign saying Little Italy pained white, green and red.

But the food. Wow the food! I always order a seafood pasta (it’s a mix of my two favourite things) and it was everything I envision an Italian restaurant to create, and more. And I can honestly, hand on heart say, it was the best garlic bread I’ve ever eaten in my life!

Image of garlic flat base bread on white plate with pizza cutter handle showing beneath bread in Little Italy, Aberystwyth

Get yourself to Naples for the best pizza in the world but to Wales’s Little Italy for the best Aberystwyth food.

Being a student town, there are lots of Aberystwyth pubs serving pub grub, hosting quiz nights and holding happy hours. I enjoyed a mid-morning Bloody Mary at Baravin with lovely views of the beach as it’s so close to the sea front.

Don’t miss out on Aberystwyth food festival held every September on Baker Street.

7. Aberystwyth Castle

The castle near Aberystwyth sea front is one of the best Aberystwyth attractions. It has been around since the 13th century so holds history and learning like many other castles in Wales. Entry to the castle is free and open at all times!

Near the castle and the promenade is also a building of interest that forms part of Aberystwyth University. It’s of interest because it looks exactly like something out of Harry Potter .

8. Aberystwyth Museums

Choose from two museums to visit in Aber: Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum (Amgueddfa means Museum in Welsh) and Aberystwyth Arts Centre .

Located in the heart of the town is the museum dedicated to everything about the county Ceredigion in Wales. The museum is home to art, textiles and artefacts to demonstrate the heritage of life in Ceredigion and culture of this Mid-Wales region.

Known as the ‘national flagship for the arts’, Aberystwyth Arts Centre is home to everything from music and murals to horror film festivals. You can buy tickets for festivals, productions or exhibitions or even become a member through their website here .

Places Near Aberystwyth

After you’ve completed this list there are some lush places to visit near Aberystwyth in Mid Wales such as Lake Vyrnwy, Aberaeron and Llandrindod Wells.

While in Aberystwyth North Wales is technically under an hour away so why not continue your Wales road trip to the North? Things to do near Aberystwyth include the gorgeous Snowdonia mountain and villages like Dolgellau, Beddgelert and Machynlleth. Head to the Isle of Anglesey to Beaumaris Castle and Llanfairpwll (longest Welsh place name), coastal Llandudno or over the border to Liverpool or Manchester!

Alternatively, head south of Aberystwyth to West Wales and explore the Cardigan coast, places in Pembrokeshire , St Davids, Narberth or Carmarthen.

Aberystwyth – a guide for visiting this stunning Welsh town in 2023

View_of_Aberystwyth_from_Constitution_Hill_-_geograph.org.uk_-_689250

Aberystwyth might be best known by many for its university, but it is also a stunning town with thousands of years of history to explore. Located in the West of Wales Ceredigion, the town boasts amazing views, great places to eat, and more. We wanted to highlight some of the best things to see and do in the town for 2023, but first let's have an overview of the town:

Where is Aberystwyth?

Aberystwyth is located in Ceredigion, the Welsh county in the West of the country. The name of the town means "the mouth of the Ystwyth", which is exactly where the town is located - at the mouth of The River Ystwyth.

Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest

We've already published an entire guide about this forest (which was featured on the official Devil's Bridge Falls website ), so we won't spend too much time on it in this guide, but it is still absolutely worthy of a mention. It's technically situated 9 miles east of Aberystwyth, so although it's a little bit away we think you should still pay a visit. The walk around the lake is a particular highlight, but even if you don't fancy a big walk during your visit then you can still enjoy things like the excellent food and coffee at the cafe, as well as the Red Kites feeding sessions. Read our guide about the forest here .

Vale of Rheidol Railway

This 12-mile railway runs from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge, and is definitely the best way to see the amazing Rheidol Valley. It's also an amazing way to see birds of prey such as Red Kite and Buzzards as they are often seen hovering over the valley. The railway has been open since the very start of the 20th century and still uses restored Edwardian steam trains which have been lovingly restored and are very enjoyable to ride on. The only element to consider to would be the price - at £30 per person for a return journey it is a little on the pricey side, but this does include a 1 hour journey each way and about an hour in Devil's bridge. Devil's Bridge Falls near the last station is definitely worth a visit also. Learn more and book your tickets here - rheidolrailway.co.uk

Vale_of_Rheidol_Railway_-_geograph.org.uk_-_460576

Aberystwyth Cliff Railway (& Constitution Hill)

We think Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is as much worth a visit as the Vale of Rheidol Railway (plus it's much cheaper!). A trip on this railway is an excellent way to see Aberystwyth as you travel up the side of Constitution Hill. Opened in the late 19th century, this railway is a Grade II listed structure and is almost 800 feet long. It is the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain, and at the top of the cliff you'll find one of the world’s largest camera obscuras from which you enjoy stunning views across the water and town. Trains run every day between 10am and 5pm and will cost you £6 for a return journey. Your only way to contact them at the moment is to call via this number - 01970 617642

Silver Mountain Experience

Set against the dramatic Cambrian Mountains you'll find the Silver Mountain Experience, definitely one of the best attractions to see in the Aberystwyth area. You can enjoy guided tours of the Silver-Lead Mine, and you can enjoy actor-led shows who help to bring the history and myths of the site to life. If you're feeling extra adventurous you'll also find 2 escape rooms here, including a Jack The Ripper one. The Dragon Hunt is especially good for kids and involves a full hour of clue finding. You might not have this at the top of your list to visit in Aberystwyth, but trust us when we say that it is definitely worth it! Learn more here - silvermountainexperience.co.uk

Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum

After all of the adrenaline of the railways and the silver mines, a trip to a museum might be a welcome break! The Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum might not be as exciting as a tour of a mine but is still a fascinating (and beautiful) place to visit. Housed within an Edwardian theatre, the museum boasts a collection of more than 60,000 objects ranging from items dating back to the Neolithic period, all the way up to items from the 1970s. It's in the centre of the town and is well worth an hour or so of your time, learn more here - ceredigionmuseum.wales

Aberystwyth Castle

Similar to the castle in Builth Wells , Aberystwyth Castle was built by King Edward I in the 13th century. Despite being a free attraction, the castle is an excellent place to visit. Even if you're not interested in castles, the views from the site across the beach and town are well worth the trip. There is also a war memorial here which is quite a touching thing to see. A great idea is to bring a picnic with you as there is plenty of space to sit down. Despite being in ruins, there is still lots to explore and the castle is well kept with no litter or graffiti. Definitely visit!

Visit the dark sand of North Beach & walk along the promenade

A trip to Aberystwyth wouldn't be complete without a visit to North Beach, the focal point of the town. The beach has a distinctive look with dark sand and shingle covering much of the area, and it is excellent for a stroll before or after a visit into town. If you're looking to do a bit more than just relax then you can enjoy one of the traditional beachside attractions including donkey walks and a bouncy castle. A look at the 19th-century Victorian pier is also a must, and probably the main focus of the promenade and seafront is Marine Terrace which is well known for its Victorian and Edwardian-style architecture and hotels.

The beach has been awarded both Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, and the beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer months.

Walk the Ceredigion Coast Path

If walking is your thing then we recommend you head on the Ceredigion Coast Path - this 65-mile route takes you from Cardigan to Ynyslas, but one of the best stretches (certainly the most isolated) is the 10 miles from Aberystwyth to Llanryhstud. Be warned though, most of the walk is pretty strenuous and involves walking up steep cliffs. But if you're up for the challenge, you'll be rewarded with incredible views. We certainly recommend it!

Places to eat and shops to visit in Aberystwyth

You're spoilt for choice when it comes to great places to eat and shops to visit in Aberystwyth - the influx of students and tourists means there is a nice mix of locations to try. Favourite places to eat include Little Italy on North Parade, Baravin on Marine Terrace, and Medina on Market Street. Some of the great independent shops include Polly for ladies' clothing, Coastal Vintage, and Ystwyth Books for a great choice of second-hand books.

1.) See the sunset from Consitution Hill

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (8)

Yeah, rambling to the top Constitutional Hill is a little workout but well worth it for the views from the top. This is especially true around sunset when the town glows from the sun setting over the sea.

For me, this is one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth that I’ve done countless times. Though, just make sure to wear sensible shoes and be very careful around the cliff edges as it can be dangerous.

Once at the top, there’s even a little cafe that’s open in the summer months, too.

Plus, if you’re feeling really tired, you can always take the Cliff Railway back down.

2.) Head on the Cliff Railway

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (6)

Speaking of the Cliff Railway, you can’t really visit Aberystwyth without a little jaunt on it!

After all, it’s the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain and has been operating since the 1800s.

Now run by a non-profit organisation, return tickets cost between £3-5 and is open in the summer months. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth, especially for how historic it is.

3.) Explore Aberystwyth Castle

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (11)

Speaking of historic things, Aberystwyth Castle is probably one of the oldest structures in the whole town.

Perched right on the seafront, it’s an Edwardian fortress that dates well back to the 1200s.

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (5)

The castle has a long history, with Owain Glyndwr capturing the castle from the invading English back in the 1400s.

Then, by the 1600s King Charles, I turned the whole castle into a Royal Mint that produced silver shillings for the crown.

In more recent years, the castle has fallen into ruins but you can still walk through the towers, rooms and grounds which overlook the Cambrian coast.

It really is one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth, especially if you love castles.

4.) Take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (13)

If you’re fancying a little jaunt from the town, take the Vale of Rheidol Railway that connects Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge.

Now, it might sound totally ominous, but it’s actually a pretty lovely spot to visit for a few hours.

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (2)

You see, after getting off the train, you can wander down to the waterfalls and stop off at the cafe and restaurant for a little meal before heading back.

5.) Walk the promenade

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (5)

On a sunny day, one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth has to be to walk the promenade. Dating back to Victorian times, the promenade stretches the whole length of the town and will take you around an hour for a leisurely stroll.

Also, you might notice that at the end of the ‘prom’ there’s a bar that many students kick once they’ve graduated. It’s a little pastime that many people do and you’ll find it around graduation days for sure.

Just make sure you keep your eyes peeled for the local dolphins that call this bay home.

6.) Visit the National Library of Wales

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (13)

So, if you’re a total bookworm, then you’ll likely love the National Library of Wales. Free to enter, it’s one of only a few libraries in the UK that has every book ever published within it.

Standing, overlooking the town, the library is easy to get to in a taxi or a walk from the centre itself. It’s the building that looks like Buckingham Palace up on top of the hill.

7.) Ceredigion Coastal Path

Talking of walking, another great thing to do if you love a ramble is to join the Ceredigion Coastal Path that stretches the coastline.

9.) Visit the Pier

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (19)

So, one of Aberystwyth’s most famous assets has to be the pier that juts out into the sea itself. Here, they have everything from restaurants, games arcades, a night club and a few bars, too.

Take a wander around, see the starlings that call the pier home in the summer months and grab a gelato (or two). It really is one of the best things to do in Aberystwyth.

10.) Gorge at Pysgoty

10 Best Things To Do In Aberystwyth - Wales (15)

If you’re fancying some tasty Italian cuisine, hop on over to Little Italy that’s become a firm favourite in Aberystwyth and has been going for decades. Yeah, I know it’s not typically Welsh but it’s so good.

Their homemade tiramisu is so good.

ABOUT ABERYSTWYTH

Aberystwyth is a busy town in the heart of Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales. The literal meaning of the name ‘Aberystwyth’ is mouth of the river Ystwyth (this is why you see many Aber ‘s around Wales!), although it is the Afon Rheidol that runs through the town.

We have a lot to celebrate in Aberystwyth, and no doubt we will add to this page as time goes on. Here is draft one!

Of course the town itself is probably most associated with the promenade – the gorgeous views on a sunny day, the pier, Constitution Hill, the two beaches and the castle, right in the middle of the two.

That’s not all Aberystwyth has to offer – we have a huge wealth of local businesses to support, a busy events schedule in the town, community groups and more.
