Amvrakikos Gulf

The Amvrakikos Gulf is one of the largest closed bays of Greece. The entrance of the bay is in the narrow passage between Aktio (on the side of Aitoloakarnania) and Preveza. The bay is named after ancient Amvrakia, a town built on the river Arhathos, in the place of today’s Arta. The rivers Louros and Arachthos flow into the bay. At Amvrakikos is built Amfilochia. Near Amfilochia is the cape of St. George, where there is a lighthouse. Vonitsa is also another important town on the road from Amfilochia to Preveza and Lefkada.

At the entrance of the bay, a submarine tunnel was constructed and launched in 2002, connecting Aktio with Preveza [1]. In the bay and especially in the port of Amfilochia, during the summer months (especially in August), the phenomenon of phosphorescence of the sea, which is due to the accumulation of microorganisms (plankton).

Cruising the Amvrakikos gulf

The Amvrakikos gulf is one of the biggest wetlands of Greece, both in size and importance. The gulf covers almost 400 km2 and it is an enclosed sea that is consisted of many smaller wetlands. The Amvrakikos gulf is connected to the Ionian Sea by a narrow strait, the Preveza channel. At the gulf’s mouth, in 2002 an underwater tunnel was constructed and it connects Aktio to Preveza. It is a wetland of great importance, not just for Greek, but for international environmental state also. One of the last healthy bottlenose dolphin populations of the Mediterranean Sea lives in the waters of Amvrakikos gulf. As stated in the “New Scientist” magazine, their population seems to be stable, approximately at 150 dolphins. The bottlenose dolphins of Amvrakikos survive due to sardine’s population. If the oxygen levels expel the sardines, that will be the end of dolphins too.

Municipal Museum of the Naval Battle of Aktio

This tour guide is dedicated to the maritime history of Preveza and to Amvrakikos gulf.   The municipal museum of the naval battle of Aktio is just 1 km far from the historic centre of Preveza and it was founded in 2002, in order to promote the famous naval battle. It is consisted of two rooms, where there is a big scale-model representation of the naval battle, while scale models of wooden ship types, that took part into the naval battle, are displayed there.

At the municipal Maritime Museum, the visitor has the chance, through the exhibits, interactive applications and audiovisual material, to get an overview of the relation between Preveza and the sea: the naval battle of Aktio, the traditional shipbuilding and fishery, the peak of the commercial shipping and the port at the beginning of the 20th century.

Laskara Cape

Almost 5 km on the north east of Preveza, there is the Laskara cape, overlooking the Amvrakikos gulf and really close to it, just next to the bay, there is one of the last daliania that still functions. It is about a rare fishing technique, that started in the Minor Asia and it lies on the observer’s ability and on fishermen’s movement coordination.

Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Workshop

Go on and visit the Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Workshop at Neochori suburb. At the museum you can find out about tradition and culture of the dwellers, be aware of the fauna and flora of the Amvrakikos gulf, and look at objects made by human activities, as well as by the very natural environment.

Settlement of Neochori

To the south limits of the ancient Nikopolis, you shall sight the beautiful settlement of Neochori, as you go down to the shallow waters of the sea of Amvrakikos gulf, which is full of dense seaweeds and it is interspersed by the circular routes of numerous waterfowls.

Lagoon of Mazoma

To the east, the sea of Amvrakikos gulf enters deep into the land and there, the beautiful lagoon of Mazoma is created, while to the north, the ancient monuments of Nikopolis dominate.

Lagoon of Tsopelio

Next to the national road and at the region between the settlements of Michalitsi and Flamboura, in a picturesque and bird’s eye view place, there is the wooden bird observatory. The lagoon of Tsopelio is situated to the north and it is a rich wetland to the estuary of Louros River.

Alternatively, another route that the visitor can enjoy is the one in vessels and boats from the estuary of Louros River, towards the Amvrakikos gulf and final arrival at ancient Voucheteio in Kerasounta, while he’ll be stunned by the lush vegetation, the unique flora and fauna in Europe and the rare species of birds.

Αμβρακία οδός – παράκαμψη αμφιλοχίας.

Οδηγούμε στο τμήμα της Αμβρακίας Oδού που δόθηκε χθες στην κυκλοφορία.

Αν στις διακοπές σας ταξιδεύετε βορειοδυτικά, προς Λευκάδα, Πάργα, Σύβοτα, Παξούς, Κέρκυρα, μια ευχάριστη έκπληξη σας περιμένει στο ύψος της λίμνης Αμβρακίας, καθώς παραδόθηκε χθες το ανατολικό τμήμα της Αμβρακίας Οδού , και μάλιστα 5 μήνες νωρίτερα από τον αρχικό σχεδιασμό.

Πρόκειται για 17 χιλιόμετρα τα οποία οδηγούν από τον κόμβο της Ιονίας Οδού, πλάι στη λίμνη Αμβρακία, κατ ευθείαν στο Λουτράκι και τον Αμβρακικό κόλπο, παρακάμπτοντας την Αμφιλοχία.

Η παράκαμψη της Αμφιλοχίας γλιτώνει τους ταξιδιώτες από τα πιο δύσκολα χιλιόμετρα της διαδρομής, κατ αρχήν από πλευράς απόστασης, που μειώνεται κατά 7 χλμ, περισσότερο όσον αφορά τον κερδισμένο χρόνο, αφού εξοικονομούνται 20-25 λεπτά, και προπαντός από πλευράς επικινδυνότητας.

Η παλιά διαδρομή περιλάμβανε τμήμα δύσκολων στροφών όπου συχνά συνέβαιναν σοβαρά ατυχήματα, κοντά στο χωριό Σπάρτο, ενώ περνούσε από το κέντρο της Αμφιλοχίας και τις παραλιακές καφετέριες, όπου τα γκαρσόνια έπρεπε να κάνουν σλάλομ με τον δίσκο στο χέρι ανάμεσα στα διερχόμενα φορτηγά, λεωφορεία και ΙΧ.

Επιπλέον ήταν ένας δρόμος σε κάκιστη κατάσταση, κυρίως κατά την δεκαετία του 2010-19, που ήταν γεμάτος κρατήρες στους οποίους αρκετοί οδηγοί έσπασαν ζάντες και έσκισαν λάστιχα.

Η Αμβρακία ( αυτοκινητόδρομος Α52 ) αποτελεί τμήμα της Ευρωπαϊκής Οδού Ε55 , ενώνει την Ιονία Οδό με το αεροδρόμιο και το υποθαλάσσιο τούνελ του Ακτίου. Πρόκειται για έναν αυτοκινητόδρομο 48,5 χλμ με δύο λωρίδες ανά ρεύμα και κεντρικό στηθαίο, χωρίς όμως ΛΕΑ. Το δυτικό τμήμα 15 χλμ είχε ήδη παραδοθεί τον Απρίλιο 2019 οπότε, μετά την χθεσινή παράδοση του ανατολικού τμήματος, απομένει μόνο το κεντρικό τμήμα 16,5 χλμ, το οποίο θα ολοκληρωθεί το 2023.

Τόνισε ο Περιφερειάρχης Δυτικής Ελλάδας, κ. Νεκτάριος Φαρμάκης : « Από τη μια πλευρά χαιρόμαστε, από την άλλη θυμόμαστε τα χρόνια που χάθηκαν και τις ευθύνες που τα συνοδεύουν ».

Ο Υφυπουργός Υποδομών, κ. Γ. Καραγιάννης έδωσε κάποια ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία: Κατά μέσον όρο συνέβαιναν 120 τροχαία ατυχήματα κάθε χρόνο στον παλιό δρόμο τον οποίο αντικαθιστά η Αμβρακία, με ετήσιο απολογισμό περίπου 20 τραυματίες και 3 νεκρούς.

Δηλαδή, στις δεκαετίες που χάθηκαν, ένα χωριό έσβησε και μια κωμόπολη έμεινε με τραύματα και αναπηρίες μόνο σε αυτό το δρόμο.

Ο Πρωθυπουργός, κ. Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης , που παραβρέθηκε στα εγκαίνια, παρουσιάστηκε συγκρατημένα αισιόδοξος ότι ολόκληρο το έργο θα παραδοθεί νωρίτερα από τον αρχικό σχεδιασμό, εντός του 2023.

Οδηγήσαμε στην Αμβρακία Οδό, και απολαύσαμε την ενδιαφέρουσα θέα , αρχικά στους βαλτότοπους της λίμνης Αμβρακίας με τα σπάνια πουλιά, στη συνέχεια στο επιβλητικό τοπίο του Ξηρόμερου και τελικά στον Αμβρακικό.

Η άσφαλτος είναι σχετικά τραχιά, με υψηλό συντελεστή τριβής, που μεταφράζεται σε αυξημένη πρόσφυση με το σχετικό τίμημα στην κατανάλωση. Σε ένα μικρό σημείο είχαμε ελαφρές αναπηδήσεις λόγω κακοτεχνίας, που ελπίζουμε να διορθωθεί πριν την οριστική παράδοση ολόκληρου του έργου.

Το όριο είναι παντού 90 χλμ/ώρα , καθώς η χάραξη του δρόμου προσφέρεται για μεσαίες και όχι υψηλές ταχύτητες. Ατυχώς, όπως διαπιστώσαμε, πολλοί οδηγοί παρασύρονται από τις δύο λωρίδες ανά ρεύμα και οδηγούν με αρκετά υψηλότερες ταχύτητες και αυτό, σε συνδυασμό με την απουσία ΛΕΑ, είναι σημείο άξιο προσοχής.

Στα 17 αυτά χιλιόμετρα δεν υπάρχουν διόδια , ούτε ΣΕΑ ή κάποιο πρατήριο, ούτε καν τουαλέτες, οπότε αν σχεδιάζετε να ταξιδέψετε εδώ, φροντίστε να καλύψετε τις λοιπές ανάγκες σας εντός Ιονίας.

Κρίμα που δεν είχαμε αυτούς τους δρόμους από τότε που έπρεπε. Χάθηκαν ανθρώπινες ζωές, χάθηκαν αναπτυξιακές ευκαιρίες ενώ οι φίλοι της αυτοκίνησης χάσαμε σε κακούς δρόμους τα χρόνια που ήταν ψηλά οι μισθοί και φτηνή η βενζίνη.

Ambracian Gulf (Amvrakikos)

Known in English literature and history as the Ambracian Gulf, this 400-square-kilometre body of water represents one of the largest wetlands in the region, and is linked to the Ionian sea by a small opening.

With the Arachthos and Louros rivers flowing freely into this gulf, there are fresh water areas that make for a very interesting biotope and ecosystem. Lagoons such as Agrilos, Logarou, Rodia and Tsoukalio – separated from the sea by sand dunes – also encourage biodiversity, incuding the largest reed bed at the Rodia lagoon in the country. There are reportedly over 100,000 species of fauna and flora, with 250 bird species by some counts (75 of which are rare). Marine life has been reduced in recent years, but the area is still an important habitat for cuttlefish, eel, mullet, mussel, shrimp and sole. Unfortunately the rivers bring in much pollution that threatens the wetlands.
