So this is really my first cruise but I figured since I speak good Spanish, that It wouldn’t be a bad thing to book an outside excursion in Mexico. I booked with chunky monkey tours and I just wanted to see if any of you guys had an experience with them that you would share. Thanks

They seem to be a relatively new company. I asked earlier about their beach club but got no response. Since then they seem to be offering a beach break but I was really interested in going independently and just PAYG. They do not appear to have an email contact for questions.  

Not sure which tour you have booked but if you go to their beach club please report back.

• A 60-minute snorkeling trip (boat ride included) or a 60-minute massage

I just stumbled across their website, and I am looking forward to your review.

I see you are back from your cruise now and hope you are still monitoring these boards! Do you have any updates on Chunky Monkey Beach?

Yeah they were good but they didn’t pick me up I had to get a cab both ways and they didn’t pay for the cab either after I paid 89 each online I was expecting to get picked up. The food and drinks were excellent as was the massage I got from Guadeloupe . So I recommend just catching a cab and taking it there if you want to do that but I did not like costa Maya it stank from the rotting sargassum . Next time I’m definitely staying on the ship skipping that one

Thanks for the update.  

Unfortunately you sailed at the height of sargassum season and this has been a particularly bad year. I imagine Chunky Monkey is too far south to be protected by the baffles positioned off the beach along the malecon. Were they trying to keep the beach clear or not a Chunky Monkey - i suspect it is a small workforce?

The website does say transport included in the package, $89 and no transport is very expensive. Also it says only one drink was that correct? I don’t want the snorkeling or massage. Did you see people just arriving without a package and doing PAYG? Did you see a menu with prices? Thanks.

It was unlimited drinks and you got to choose an entrée off the menu basically anything you wanted and they were huge portions. The food was absolutely wonderful and I think they try to do something about the sargassum  it was just too bad. They told me the best time to come is in March. I didn’t get many photos of the food because the wind was blowing and it started to rain. It was kind of a bus but the drinks were strong and delicious and the food was the best I had on the whole trip. you can definitely arrive without a package But we just actually went on a very bad day so we were the only people there

What is scuba diving?

Scuba diving is when a diver goes underwater with a tank and other equipment. A good thing about this is that you can explore even deeper in this underwater world without having to worry about air. The con is that you need to be a strong swimmer and be able to use breathing equipment. In many places, you’ll also need to become a certified diver to go through the course of an entire trip. By scuba diving meters in the Caribbean, you will get to see the reef in Mahahual.

Does Costa Maya have good scuba diving?

Yeah! Diving off the south coast of Costa Maya is ideal for beginning divers as the coral reef acts as a barrier. The water here has many unknown areas suitable for experienced divers. Costa Maya, Mexico, is also home to the second largest barrier reef in the world! That means that there are many types of exotic fish and marine life.

You can even spot a turtle or an eagle ray if you’re lucky! Not to mention the many species of beautiful coral reefs that you can find in the sea. We also offer snorkeling dives if you would rather stay near the surface. Remember to book before you go because there are limited dives and people we can fit on a team.

Do I have to be certified to go scuba diving?

The short answer is no, but it’s a little more complicated. Many diving tours offered by tour companies don’t require you to be certified, and the ones that do are more extreme tours offered to people with more experience.

If you want to make the most of your time here, we recommend becoming certified before going on your trip to go on a better trip, but don’t worry if you aren’t! You can find easier diving tours that don’t require you to be certified and are offered to a bigger audience so that you can bring your family along!

Is scuba diving hard for beginners?

As a recreational activity, diving can quickly be learned. When you glide around and admire water sights, it takes three simple skills — swimming, kicking, and breathing. Once you have learned how to do these three basic motions, you’ll do just fine on a scuba diving tour. We suggest you take a class and become a certified diver before booking a more extreme tour. Luckily, the coral reef is a natural barrier and helps to keep the waves calmer and divers where they need to be. This is a great place for beginners to dive, especially with the beautiful sights.

Is it safe to scuba dive in Costa Maya, Mahahual?

Absolutely! We take your safety very seriously while on our dive. If you are unsure what to do, our dive instructors know what they’re doing and have experience.

While on your adventure, you won’t have to worry too much about getting hurt if you stick with your team. Still, we would take a few precautionary steps before going on your dive. First, it would be good to learn the hand signals, which our instructor already knows.

Knowing the hand signals will mean you can signal to your instructor or recognize their signals underwater at the site. Second, you should make sure that your gear fits properly. After putting on your gear, especially your feet fins, you should try walking around and swimming with them. You might want to get a different pair for our dive if they slip off.

Can I have a refund if my cruise doesn't port on time?

Many tour companies, including us, offer a no port, no pay policy. If your cruise doesn’t show up on shore on time and you miss your booking, you will get a free refund. We will then do our best to book your trip to fit in when you’re here so you can still enjoy scuba diving and see the stunning marine life.

What's the difference between snorkeling and scuba diving?

When snorkeling, you stay near the surface and use a mask attached to a snorkel tube. That way, you can breathe while taking in the sights. When scuba diving, you go entirely underwater, anywhere from 18 to 60 meters down. You also use a breathing tank instead of a tube attached to your mask. Snorkeling benefits are that you can do it with the whole family without knowing how to swim. The best part about scuba diving is seeing much more and going deeper.

At the end of your scuba diving trip

You’ll probably be understandably tired after scuba diving for a few hours. If that’s the case, you can go to 5 star rated Chunky Monkey Costa Maya Beach Club, where you can rest your feet and get a bite to eat. If you’re thirsty, you can order some free water or perhaps a fun drink from our bar. Our crew would be happy to serve you and hear about your scuba diving stories. Chunky Monkey Beach Club hours range from 7:30 pm Monday to Wednesday to 10 pm from Thursday to Sunday.

If you search for unusual landscape, which is not typical for Central Russia, 100 km from Moscow, there is such an exotic place. This is a sand quarry in Sychevo , a vast territory about 8 km long with dunes and small lakes, thickets of sea buckthorn and excavators. The way to get here is not easy to find, so it is not a crowded place. Some people come here for extreme sports, some come to relax on a sandy beach, but many come just to see this peculiar  Moscow-area desert .

A place for extreme sports

The Sychevo Sand Quarry is an ideal place for extreme sports . Young people come here for sandboarding , riding down a sand dune while standing on a board. Additionally, quad bikes or dirt bikes enthusiasts practice driving on the sandy hills here.

Hiking up and down

If you are not an extreme sports person, or you don’t have your skateboard and motorbike with you, you can spend time hiking up and down the dunes. The sandhills are of different height, some of them consist of loose sand, and some are rather firm, partly overgrown with grass and bushes. Moreover, you will definitely have different views: sand dunes, green forests, lakes, and even a small white church on the horizon.

Chill and sunbathe

On a hot summer day, why not to chill and sunbathe? The sandpits that are not used any more for sand extraction are filled with water. There are several such lakes on the territory of the sand quarry . Some are lonely, some are quite popular, and you can see many people on this wild beach.

Taste sea buckthorn berries

Along the edge of the sand quarry, you can come across the thickets of sea buckthorn (lat.  hippophae ). These shrubs typically grow in dry, sandy areas. You can even taste the berries  if you come in August when the berries are ripe. These fruits are edible and nutritious, even though some people think that they are unpleasant to eat raw because they are astringent and not very sweet.

Overgrowing lakes attract fishermen

Some old lakes start to overgrow with bulrush, carex, and reedmace. Such overgrowing lakes are not suitable for swimming, but they attract fishermen , who like to sit in silence and solitude on a shore with a fishing-rod in their hands waiting for some small fish like carassius.

The Sychevo Sand Quarry occupies a large territory, so the landscape of its area is different. Moreover, sand extraction is an ongoing process in this area, so the landscape slowly changes. Still, this exotic Moscow-area desert with its sandhills,  dunes , small lakes, and sea buckthorn is worth a visit.
