The country’s more than 1,000 scenic fjords, idyllic mountains, and imposing glaciers are among the many awe-inspiring landscapes you will see on a cruise in Norway . Add sightings of the aurora borealis in the dark winter months, cultural attractions in the cities and towns along the way, plus abundant adventure-filled outings, such as kayaking, mountain biking, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing, and it’s clear why Norway is such a sought-after cruise destination.

Years ago, on a cruise in Norway, I met a fellow passenger who complained about the sheer number of fjords, saying that he would have preferred more variety of landscape. To me, as a frequent cruiser, these striking vistas are a must-see experience on the world map. Sailing into Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, you might even imagine that you see those elusive and fanciful trolls as your ship glides along shimmering water through the 328-foot opening of a passage flanked by towering cliffs.

Most Norway sailings operate between May and September, with the height of the season running from June through August. That said, you can cruise Norway year-round.

It’s worth noting that in 2018, the Norwegian Parliament adopted a resolution that will limit access to only those ships able to sail emissions-free in the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway; it will go into effect by 2026. While it’s not yet totally clear how exactly the regulation will play out, this could potentially impact which ships sail to Geiranger and Flam in the near future.

What you’ll see on a Norway cruise

Nature and culture are the star attractions on cruises exploring the western coast of Norway. Passengers will have dramatic views as they glide into fjords dotted with scenic mountain-backed villages and colorful homes.

Note that most Norway cruises do not visit the capital city of Oslo, so if that’s on your wish list you’ll want to select your itinerary carefully.

As for other itinerary highlights, the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is a must for history lovers, home to the old wharf area of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dozens of 14th- to 16th-century wooden houses. Bergen also has a bustling fish market and some of the best arts attractions in the country, including the home of composer Edvard Grieg.

If your cruise goes above the Arctic Circle , you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights Cathedral in Tromso, which claims status as a Northern Lights capital based on its position on the so-called aurora oval, improving your chances of seeing the aurora borealis there. Less-visited Alta, also on the aurora oval, has such winter attractions as Northern Lights viewing while spending the night in a teepee at a Sami dogsledding camp—an experience offered by some cruise lines. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.

Geiranger, at the head of the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord, stuns with waterfalls that include the 1,000-foot Seven Sisters. From Stavanger, visit Pulpit Rock for more cliff and waterfall drama or stay in town and visit the fascinating sardine canning museum, wood houses, and shops in the old town.

Flam has the star attraction of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord, viewable on a one-hour steep ascent on the antique trains of the Flam Railway. Aesund is a pretty fishing village known for art nouveau architecture, while Olden boasts access to glaciers and glacial-fed waterfalls and lakes. Viking history is a draw in Trondheim, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason and known today for its culinary scene.

You can book 5- or 6-night one-way north or south sailings, or 11-night round-trip cruises that do the whole 2,500-mile circuit. Since some stops are for less than an hour, a key is to also book optional shore excursions, which leave the ship and reboard further down the line.

7 Best Cruise Journeys in Norway

With the second-longest coastline in the world, Norway boasts thousands of miles of dramatic fjords and unforgettable coastal landscapes. That means that there’s an incredible amount to see, and no better way to enjoy it than on a Norwegian cruise trip .

On one of the best Norway cruises, witness the majesty of the fjords and the delights of the country’s Viking culture. Set sail in the rejuvenating light of the summer’s midnight sun. Or in winter, you could be lucky enough to glimpse the ethereal beauty of the northern lights along the way.

Here, we share 7 locations for the best cruises in Norway and give you some tips for what to consider when planning your trip.

Gudvangen - Best Norway Cruises

1. Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord

One of the most rewarding itineraries for a Norway cruise takes in the awesome geography of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even in a country where a natural wonder is around almost every corner, this is simply an experience not to be missed.

Together, these fjords make up the wildest and most beautiful section of the Sognefjord , the “King of the Fjords”. This is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway.

The most popular way to visit the fjord is on the passenger ferry that runs year-round from the Viking village of Gudvangen to Aurland and on to Flåm . Expect a vibrant green backdrop in summer, and dustings of snow atop the surrounding peaks in winter.

From the village of Flåm, a historic destination nestled among steep mountainsides and roaring waterfalls, you can ride on the Flåm Railway . It’s known as the most beautiful train journey in the world for good reason.

  • Experience this unmissable journey with a classic Norway in a Nutshell® tour package

Lysefjord - Best Norway Cruises

2. Lysefjord

With a name that translates as “Light Fjord”, for the pale colour of its granite rock, Lysefjord is a geological marvel. Here, Norway really shows off its natural drama, with mountains that fall 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) vertically into the water.

You can cruise into Lysefjord from Stavanger , one of Norway’s oldest Viking cities and now a bustling cultural hub.

In 3 hours, a cruise line will transport you from the city’s charming port deep into this spectacular fjord. Along the way, you can explore Fantahålå (“Vagabond’s Cave”) and the 400-metre (1,312-foot) Hengjanefossen waterfall.

This a cruise that cries out for some time on-land too. From here, options for shore excursions include the climb up to the awe-inspiring Pulpit Rock , a flat-topped formation that hangs over the fjord. It offers one of the best views in all of Norway.

Geirangerfjord - Best Norway Cruises

3. Geirangerfjord

Alongside the Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord is one of the fjords Norway is most famous for. Framed by some of Norway’s highest mountain peaks, a journey into Geirangerfjord deserves its title as one of the most beautiful cruises in the world.

Don’t miss this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s most graceful waterfalls. The Seven Sisters , myriad streams of water falling from 250 metres (820 feet) up, is one of the most impressive. The Bridal Veil, which resembles a wedding veil draped across the mountains, is another breathtaking spectacle.

Yet there’s plenty more to see. If you choose to step off the boat, you can take a bus up the Ørnevegen , the “Eagle Road”, to a renowned viewpoint above the fjords. Or, if you prefer a walk, visit the ancient Viking farms that dot the forests alongside the shore.

It’s easiest – and most rewarding – to visit the fjord by cruising in from Ålesund , Norway’s art nouveau city. Alternatively, take the shorter hour-long trip from Geiranger to Hellesylt.

Trondheim houses - Best Norway Cruises

4. Trondheim to Kristiansund

Sat on the shores of the Trondheim Fjord is Norway’s former capital and the so-called “Capital of the Vikings”: Trondheim . Known for its imposing Nidaros Cathedral and the trendy district of Bakklandet , it’s also a favourite departure point for coastal cruises in Norway’s north.

One of the most remarkable options is to take a cruise west from Trondheim to Kristiansund , a city spread across 4 serene islands. It’s a glorious voyage along the Norwegian coast that navigates the tight sounds between western Norway’s idyllic islands.

The harbour city of Kristiansund is a great place to try the Norwegian delicacy, klippfisk, which is dried and salted cod. Or take a wildlife tour and hop across the islands in search of the elusive sea eagle.

Hurtigruten and Havila are Norwegian cruise lines that journey from Bergen as far north as Kirkenes. They're some of the best options if you want to explore Norway's coast. The Lonely Planet once called route “the world’s most beautiful voyage”. Find out why for yourself.

Northern lights over Tromso - Best Norway Cruises

5. The far north: Tromsø to Kirkenes

In summer, bask in the perpetual light of the midnight sun. Or in winter, seize the chance to see our planet’s most enchanting phenomenon: the northern lights . Whatever the season, the far north of Norway offers a cruise you’ll remember forever.

Typically, a Northern Norway cruise will start from Tromsø , the capital of the north. Before you board your cruise ship, spend time exploring this exciting and surprising Arctic city. Then depart in the evening for your northern adventure to Kirkenes .

In all seasons, it’s a popular option to spend the night aboard ship. In winter, your journey along these fjord-torn coasts may offer you a glimpse of the aurora borealis. Or, if there’s light outside, witness the remote beauty of North Cape (“Nordkapp”), mainland Europe’s most northerly point.

Of course, you can enjoy unforgettable experiences off the boat too. Dog sledding? Check. A stay in the Kirkenes Snowhotel ? You bet.

  • Chase the northern lights on these  Norwegian winter tours

Bryggen in Bergen - Best Norway Cruises

6. Bergen to Molde

Norway’s western city of Bergen is known as the “ Gateway to Norway’s Fjords ” – and you won’t need to guess why. With Hardangerfjord to the south and the entrance to Sognefjord not far north, this ancient city is the perfect base for the best Norway cruises.

A great option if you’re hoping to explore Norway’s west coast is a voyage north from Bergen to Molde .

Boarding in the evening, there’s time to visit Bryggen , Bergen’s UNESCO-protected historic wharf, during the day. You’ll wave goodbye to the city and enjoy a night aboard ship. Then wake up for an adventure-packed day just as you pass the charming city of Ålesund.

The highlight of the journey is the Hjørundfjord. This most tranquil of fjords cuts between the Sunnmøre Alps, mountains that leap 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) into the air. Your ferry may make a stop at Urke, a delightful village where you can soak in the mountain scenery.

Finally, your cruise ends in Molde, the “City of Roses”. Plan your Norway trip for July to catch the Molde Jazz Festival . Or visit at any time to experience the Molde Panorama, a view of 222 majestic mountain peaks.

  • Visit Bergen on your tour of Norway

Lofoten islands - Best Norway Cruises

7. The Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands make up one of the most spectacular archipelagos in Norway. Known for their picturesque villages and phenomenal sea views, the islands are an irresistible destination for photographers and nature lovers. Opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and even winter surfing appeal to the active traveller too.

Plus they make for a perfect location for a cruise. From Svolvær, the Lofoten Islands’ capital, recommended options include venturing north to Tromsø or south down to Bergen.

Yet, there is plenty to see right here. Journey by boat beneath the monumental landmark of the Svolværgeita, and witness from a distance the astonishing Lofotveggen, the mountains of the Lofoten isles.

Alternatively, take a wildlife tour into Trollfjord, whose entrance at 100 metres (328 feet) is even narrower than the Panama Canal . Seals, porpoises, and even whales may greet you in this Arctic oasis.

NORWAY CRUISES

Complete guide to cruising the norwegian fjords.

The Norwegian Fjords are quite simply spectacular. Although we are biased, we can genuinely say that visiting the fjords is best done by ship as there is no other way to explore the unique inlets and bays in such detail.

Because there is so much to see and so many itinerary options, it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming when deciding on which cruise to choose . Don't worry, we're here to help you through the process.

To help you get the most out of your Norwegian cruise, we have written this page to answer the many questions we get from readers regarding this region. If you're still in the planning stage then we recommend bookmarking this page to come back to it in the future.

Norway Cruise: The Complete Guide

norway cruise map

Because of their beauty, many of the Norwegian fjords have now been awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This really says it all.

Carved by enormous glaciers over millions of years, the lacerated western coastline of Norway is best explored by boat. If we include bays, fjords and island shorelines, the 63,000 mile coastline could wrap around the world... twice.

Meet anyone who has been on one of these cruises and they will yarn about the towering snow-capped peaks, the history-laden villages, the perfect waterfalls, and the picturesque inlets.

For people who have not been it, this may all sound a little far fetched and fanciful. Yet we can categorically say its true. Fjord after fjord, inlet after inlet, mountain after mountain, all take your breath away.

For outdoor lovers, a Norway cruise will not disappoint. Kayaking and hiking are popular pursuits during fjord cruises. Depending on which itinerary you choose, you could take up to 70 shore visits. Take a hike up into the hills and look down upon the magnificent fjord or kayak around the shallow inlets where your ship can't reach.

Norway has an amazing maritime history and the city stops such as Oslo or Bergen offer many museums to explore the history of the nation in more depth. You can also try the local cuisine, but be warned, it's expensive!

For people with a more adventurous appetite, there are plenty of Norwegian cruises that venture north past the Arctic Circle. During Summer you'll get 24 hours of daylight and can potentially see wildlife such as polar bears, Arctic foxes and numerous whale species. For the expedition lovers, we recommend taking an itinerary that includes Svalbard .

With so many options, deciding on your perfect Norway cruise is difficult. Below we have listed everything you need to think about.

Best Time To Cruise The Fjords

best time to cruise norway

The standard answer to this question is Summer. Particularly from June to August when temperatures are at their warmest.

However, when you sail really depends on what you want to see and do. Unlike most other Arctic cruises, you can take a Norwegian cruise all year-round thanks to Hurtigruten's Winter itineraries.

Below we discuss the pros and cons of both Summer and Winter. There is no right time, just the right time to suit you .

Summer is by far the most popular time to visit Norway. Temperatures are at their highest and you get more daylight hours.

If you journey to Northern Norway, past the Arctic Circle during the high Summer period (June - August), then you'll experience the famous 'Midnight Sun'. This is also the area to potentially see polar bears.

In the southern fjords temperatures during Summer frequently top 20 degrees celsius (68°F). Keep in mind though that rain fall is still fairly high and weather conditions can change suddenly.

You also have a lot more itinerary and ship choices during Summer as only Hurtigruten offer Winter itineraries.

Winter is a great option for people wanting to witness the Northern Lights.

With Hurtigruten offering cruises all through Winter, Norway is the best destination on earth to see the Northern Lights by ship! For a detailed page, click here .

Winter is also far less crowded and there are many cruise deals available. However, temperatures are cold and you'll need to wrap up.

The shoulder months around April/May and September/October are a great option for photographers looking to get nice sunsets and the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Be warned though, the weather is by no means guaranteed.

Types of Cruise Ships

types of Norway cruise ships

Which ship you choose to sail on will greatly impact your Norwegian cruise experience.

There are several types of ships that offer the same itineraries and knowing what type of ship will offer what is very important.

For example, large ships offer more luxuries, but are unable to visit as many inlets due to their size.

Below we have given a little more detail on what to look out for when deciding on your cruise ship.

norway cruise highlights

Expedition Ships

Expedition-style ships are for the people with an adventurous spirit.

Very few expedition ships solely visit Norway. Most of these style ships are offered on a combination stye itinerary such as Norway and Svalbard or Scotland and Norway.

The MS Expedition offers several Norway based options in May, and Hurtigruten's MS Lofoten sails all year-round .  But other than that, you'll need to book  a combination itinerary.

If you do, expect an epic experience, with guided lectures, daily zodiac trips, wildlife tours and optional activities such as dog sledding, hiking, kayaking and camping.

Do not expect pools, cinemas onboard these vessels. These cruises take around 150 passengers. This is small compared to the more popular 2-5,000 passenger cruises.

These cruises are often more expensive than the larger cruises due to their excursions and guidance.

Luxury Cruises

Far more popular throughout Norway is what we would call Luxury or Main-line cruise ships.

These ships tend to be far larger than expedition-style ships and offer far more in the way of comfort and on-board entertainment.

Expect pools, cinemas, restaurants, shopping and more onboard. If you're lucky, you'll have a good-sized balcony to sip your drinks whilst witnessing the majesty of the fjords.

However, you won't get dedicated guides and experts. You'll also experience longer queues and won't be able to reach the really small inlets and bays.

Companies that offer these ships are Hurtigruten, Cunard Line, Royal Caribbean, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, P&O Cruises, MSC Cruises Princess Cruises, etc.

Please note that most of these cruise lines will not sail to Northern Norway.

Norway Cruise Cost

Norway cruise cost

Unlike much of the Arctic, many Norway cruise itineraries won't break the bank.

Most of the main line cruise operators start at around $900 and go upwards from there. Base line prices often do not include wifi, food vouchers, shore activities etc. With these included on a standard 7 night cruise then expect to pay upwards of $1,500.

Booking early will save you a few hundred dollars, as will settling for an inside cabin. For a room with a balcony then expect to pay at least $900 more.

12 night itineraries start at around $1,500 and go up to around $5,000 for a top suite.

For expedition-style cruises expect to pay at least $3,500 for a 12 day itinerary. Hurtigruten offer a slightly cheaper itinerary on the MS Lofoten occasionally. For itineraries that combine Svalbard, Iceland or Greenland then you should expect a price tag of at least $6,000.

These prices are for a shared cabin with no extra activity added.

Other Cost Considerations

Beside the main cruise cost, there are also a number of other cost factors to consider.

Solo Travelers

Travelling solo can often boost the price of your cruise as you cannot share a cabin. On expedition-style vessels there will often be the option to share with another solo traveller.

However, this is less common on the main cruise liners who will often charge a single supplement. Depending on when and who you travel with, many cruise lines offer deals on this.

Although you may be thinking $900 is cheap for a cruise, you still have to get yourself to Norway.

Flights are the other major cost point. If you're traveling from America then your flight may well cost more than the cruise itself! Our best advise is to book early and factor this in.

Depending on when you travel, you may want to invest in some cold-weather clothing. Good parkas and shell jackets are actually quite expensive and you may  need to budget $250-500 for this if you do not own any.

Visa and other Misc. Expenses

The good news is that visitors to Norway from the US and Uk do not require a visa. The bad news, miscellaneous expenses such as food and drink are expensive in Norway!

We seriously advise eating aboard your ship to avoid a shock.

Choosing The Right Itinerary

Norway cruise - choosing an itinerary

Because of its popularity, there are numerous itineraries through the Norwegian fjords.

Luckily, when you get to know them more, you'll realise that many of them are identical but with different names depending on the cruise line offering them.

Deciding on your perfect itinerary means you need to be very clear on what you want to see and do.

As mentioned above, many of the main cruise line operators only sail to the southern fjords. If you want to experience the Arctic Circle you'll need to pick your itinerary carefully.

Below we have outline the important things to consider when deciding.

  • activities
  • cabin type

Deciding how long you want to sail will narrow down your itinerary. Most Norway cruises range from 6-12 days in length.

If you can't get much time off work then you may want to choose a 6 or 7 day itinerary. If you have a little more time then there is 12-14 day options.

Deciding where you want to sail is probably the most important decision. The best way to do this is to research the region and decide what spots intrigue you.

For your convenience we have listed the top highlights of a Norway itinerary at the bottom of the page. Whilst most cruises visit the main cities such as Bergen and Alesund, its the small picturesque villages and ports that you'll want to decide on.

Extra activities are offered on many of the major Norway cruise itineraries. How many options you receive will largely depend on the cruise line you sail with.

The huge luxury ships offered with companies such as P&O, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean etc. have fewer options than the smaller ships.

Expedition-style ships will always offer the most activities as this is what they are geared towards.

Hurtigruten are exceptionally good when it comes to shore activities. Although not the most luxurious ships on offer, extra actives include hiking, dog sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobile trips, kayaking, zodiac trips, fishing and wildlife watching.

If you're okay with just the odd hike, then choosing a large luxurious ship will suit you fine. For people wanting to try their hand at skiing or fishing, then you'll have to sail on an expedition ship or with Hurtigruten.

Please see our section further below on activities for more information.

On large cruise ships, cabin options are generally extensive.

For the best experience, we recommend a cabin with a balcony. For people on a budget this may not be an option. Rest assured, there will be plenty of deck space to view the magnificent scenery.

Although this does not affect itinerary, by booking early you will avoid any disappointment if your chosen itinerary is fully booked. The best prices always come from booking well in advance also.

Norway Cruise: Wildlife

Norway cruise - wildlife

Although Norway cruises are not focused on wildlife (excluding Svalbard itineraries of course), there is still a wide range of species that you may encounter during your cruise.

The less populated northern fjords offer the best chance at seeing wildlife, however, the southern fjords are still excellent.

Always keep an eye out for white-tailed sea eagles and Norwegian moose/elk.

Below is a list of the potential wildlife on offer during your cruise. For wildlife found in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, please click here .

norway cruise highlights

Types of Wildlife

Norway cruise wildlife - elk

Although you won't spot the from your ship, you should keep an eye out during any of your shore excursions.

The Norwegian moose can be found in anywhere, although is more common in central and southern Norway.

White-Tailed Sea Eagle

Norway cruise wildlife - eagle

One of the most impressive birds on the planet, the white-tailed sea eagle's wingspan can reach 8 feet!

You can see these magnificent birds anywhere along the Norwegian coast line - so keep a watch out.

Lynx and Brown Bears

Norway cruise wildlife - lynx

The Eurasian lynx can found in certain forests in the north of Norway such as Reisa National Park. However, these are incredible rare to see and cruise goers don't stand a chance.

Brown bears can only be found in Øvre Dividal National Park - a thin sliver of forest on the northern border of Norway.

Arctic Fox

Norway arctic cruise wildlife fox

Although more commonly seen in Svalbard, there is a breeding population in both Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park and the more southerly Borgefjell National Park.

You'll need to be lucky to spot these creatures. Always keep an eye out near bird colonies.

Norway cruise wildlife - whales

During Summer and early Winter, the North Atlantic is incredibly rich in plankton. This fact draws thousands of whales to Norway each year.

The Vesterålen group of islands in Northern Norway is your best bet. You'll have the chance to spot Minke, humpback, pilot, sperm and orca.

Norway cruise wildlife puffin

Puffins or 'sea parrots' as they're sometimes called are a favourite of most bird watchers.

These charismatic little creatures can be found in their thousands on Bleik, a tiny village south of Andenes in Vesterålen.

Harbour Seal

Norway cruise wildlife - seal

Harbour Seals are quite common sightings and can be seen along the entire coast of Norway.

Often seen in groups of 10-20 strong, especially around beaches and intertidal areas.

Norway cruise wildlife - musk ox

One of the oldest mammals to walk our planet, musk ox are an incredible sight.

Although you won't see them on your cruise, if you travel to Dovrefjell National Park and take a safe you are almost guaranteed to see them.

Norway Cruise: Things To Do

things to do on a Norway cruise

Although many people take a Norwegian fjords cruise to relax, unwind and take in the spectacular landscape, there are actually numerous activities and things to do during your cruise!

For people wanting to simply relax, we suggest taking one of the larger ships operated by P&O, Royal Caribbean or someone similar.

For people wanting a more active cruise, we suggest taking an expedition cruise or a semi-expedition cruise with Hurtigruten.

Read below to get a little more information.

norway cruise highlights

The Northern Lights

things to do on a Norway cruise - Northern lights

As mentioned above, Norway is actually one of the few places on earth to take a Northern Lights cruise.

The Arctic ice makes most cruises impossible during Winter. However Hurtigruten offer year-round cruises up Norway's northern coastline.

This means you can stand on deck and witness some of the best Aurora Borealis displays in the world.

For more information, please see our Northern Lights cruise page .

Photography

Norway-cruise-photography

Anyone who regularly visits Instagram can tell you how many epic landscape photos come out of Norway!

It really is ridiculous the amount of incredible photography opportunities there along the Norwegian fjords.

Take photos from your ship or, even better, hike up to a view point during your shore excursions. Always remember a polariser.

Expedition cruises will often have a dedicated photography guide onboard. For more photography tips, please see our page on shooting in the Arctic .

norway cruise highlights

Wildlife Watching

things to do on a Norway cruise - wildlife watching

Whilst most diehard wildlife watchers would take a cruise to Svalbard, mainland Norway still offers up plenty of wildlife watching opportunities as discussed above.

The northern fjords and islands are better for this. Keep an eye out for harbour seals, sea eagles, moose and Arctic foxes.

In early Winter you'll have the best chance of spotting numerous whale species such as orca. You can also take sea eagle and king crab safaris.

norway cruise highlights

Kayaking and Zodiacs

things to do on a Norway cruise - kayak

Kayaking is an optional activity offered by many cruise companies, including the big ones like P&O.

Kayaking gives you a great chance to see landscapes from a different perspective. It also allows you to explore the fjords in greater depth.

Zodiac trips are offered on expedition cruises. Your guide will take you out and explore the landscape in hard-to-reach places and search for wildlife.

norway cruise highlights

Snowshoeing and Skiing

things to do on a Norway cruise - snowshoe

Not as common as kayaking, snowshoe and skiing trips are offered on expedition cruise and itineraries operated by Hurtigruten.

Not many people can say they have done this and it's a great way to explore the region's forests and hills.

A certain amount of fitness will be required for this activity as it will not all be downhill!

norway cruise highlights

Hiking is included on most Norway cruise itineraries.

When ashore, take a hike up the hill to get the best views in the fjord! Sometimes these hikes will be guided, other times your guides will let you go explore the area for yourself.

Remember to take some snacks and a water bottle!

norway cruise highlights

A very fun activity offered by Hurtigruten.  Every year, large cod head down from the Barents Sea and breed along the North Norwegian coastline.

Hop aboard a fishing boat and try your luck at reeling in one of these large fish!

If you catch one (or more), you can take it ashore and cook it for your dinner. This activity is often combined with a sea eagle safari.

Local Culture

things to do on a Norway cruise - culture

One of the greatest parts of a Norwegian cruise is meeting the locals and exploring the tiny hamlets and villages that dot the fjords.

Explore the local ports, taste the seafood, visit the small museums and do some shopping. Wool products are well-regarded here, as are some intriguing flavour combinations....

Packing List For The Fjords

Norway cruise packing list

Your packing list will largely depend on when and where you travel in Norway.

During the summer temperatures can reach above 25 degrees in the southern fjords, whilst a Northern Lights cruise in Winter is going to be freezing.

Whilst we can assume most people have the necessary clothing for a Summer cruise, below we have given some details on what to bring for a Winter cruise.

Items you'll need to consider before sailing are as follows:

Items To Consider

Clothing: The cold, long nights means you'll want to be rugged up. This especially true as you'll no doubt be on deck frequency to observe the lights. The key is layers - a parks, fleece, shell jacket and base layer.

Gloves: You hands will feel the cold first. Make sure they are wrapped up with a good pair of gloves. Photographers may want to bring a thin, liner pair of gloves for dexterity.

Headgear: Much of your body heat will escape through your head. Make sure to wear a beanie and buy a jacket with a hood.

Footwear: Having the right footwear is key, particularly if you are taking an expedition cruise. You'll need calf length waterproof boots for your  zodiac shore landings.

Bags and Daypacks: For people wanting to do a lot of shore excursions, a good day pack will be invaluable for storing water bottles, cameras, phones etc.

Important Accessories: There are a number of accessories you should think about. These include ear plugs, electricity hubs, kindles etc. See our detailed packing list.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norway cruise highlights - bergen

Once the capital of Norway, Bergen is a major port of call on most southern Norway itineraries. The fish market is legendary and there are a number of fascinating museums such as the Hanseatic Museum, and Old Bergen Open-Air Museum

Norway cruise highlights - Alesund

Set within a small cluster of islands, Alesund is simply magical. The Alps make for the perfect backdrop to this town and bright red and yellow buildings are ideal for lovely photos. The Art Nouveau architecture and modern feel make Alesund a delight to visit.

Norway cruise highlights - tromso

The gateway to the Arctic, Tromso is often referred to as the “Paris of the North”. Take the cable car to the top of the Fløyfjellet Mountain (1,400 feet) for epic views of the city and fjord below. Also try and visit the Arctic Cathedral built in 1960.

Norway cruise highlights - flam

Nestled deep within the heart of the Fjords, Flåm has been a popular destination of cruise goers for years. Most notable is the Flåm railway trip that runs from the port and takes you through stunning landscapes. Often regarded as one of the greatest railway journeys on the planet.

Lofoten Islands

Norway cruise highlights - lofoten

The Lofoten islands lie just off the coast or North Norway. An untamed wilderness for nature and photography lovers. Witness some of the finest scenery in the world, take wildlife safaris and kayak between islands as you take in the majesty of this region.

Norway cruise highlights - Geiranger

Situated at the end of the Geirangerfjord in western Norway’s Romsdal County, Geiranger village is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The longest, deepest and most narrow fjord in Norway, Geiranger is considered to be one of the ultimate destinations in Scandinavia.

Norway cruise highlights - floro

Lighthouse safaris, fishing trips, hikes and spectacular islands await you in the area of Florø. Visit the Coastal Museum or take a 40 minute drive to see the incredibly ancient Ausevika Rock carvings . Look out for the carvings of bear and elk.

Måløy

Norway cruise highlights - Malloy

Måløy has one of the most celebrated fishing commutes in Norway with over 3,000 people making their sole living from fishing. Because of this, the seafood is simply to die for! If you have one meal away from your ship, make sure its here.

Norway cruise highlights - skjolden

Located at the head of Sognefjord, Skjolden is the best spot to see a glacier during a Norway cruise. Sognefjord is also the largest fjord in the country and gives visitors the chance to explore an untamed landscape away from the bustling cities.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. 20 of the best Norwegian fjords cruises

Norway is a place of staggering natural beauty, from fjords and snow-capped peaks to the northern lights. these are the voyages and cruise lines that showcase them best.

norway cruise highlights

N orway has the world’s largest concentration of fjords — as well some of the biggest and deepest. These natural marvels were carved out when Ice Age glaciers retreated and created an awe-inspiring contrast of snowy mountain peaks and sheer rock faces plunging into clear azure waters. Norway is also prime territory to spy the northern lights dancing across the polar sky and, come summer, experience the round-the-clock daylight of the midnight sun. Accommodation and food is pricey here, so a holiday afloat will keep costs down and you’ve got plenty of cruise lines to choose from. Here are some of the best.

1. Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten is a pioneer of cruising the Norwegian fjords. Its history goes back to 1893 when the company was founded to provide a daily passenger service for locals and deliver freight to inaccessible towns and villages along the length of the coast. These days the 11-night original route, from Bergen to Kirkenes, is available on passenger vessels, with the voyage passing about 100 fjords with 34 stops along the way. Ships hug the coastline so there’s always something to see and, on selected sailings, Hurtigruten’s northern lights promise means you get another sailing for free if the aurora borealis don’t put on a show.

Saga’s Spirit of Adventure

2. Saga Cruises

Saga’s two 999-passenger ships, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, get brownie points for their size; they’re small enough to dock at towns and quays that larger vessels simply can’t reach. The adult-only line’s fjords cruises include overnight stays in towns such as Flam and Geiranger, providing plenty of time for excursions — one being a trip on the Flamsbana Railway, which is one of the steepest in the world. Dedicated northern lights sailings visit at peak time and shore tours seek out viewing spots that provide the best chance of seeing them.

Soar above cascading waterfalls in one of the two onboard helicopters or dip underwater to get a different perspective of the fjords from the Scenic Neptune submarine, which can carry six passengers and dive to depths of nearly 300m (1,000ft). Fred Olsen’s Balmoral in Olden

4. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

This line is a natural choice for a fjords itinerary just as it was in 1848 when the Olsen family started sailing commercial ships in their homeland. The Olsen Art Studio has been introduced on the latest ships in the fleet, Borealis and Bolette, and they’re used for classes such as painting the northern lights. Fred Olsen’s smaller ships are perfectly proportioned for navigating the narrow waterways, and passengers can get even closer to the scenery with an exhilarating ride on the inflatable RIB boats, now carried on all of its vessels.

A Viking cruise at the Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord

As its name suggests, this is another line with a Scandinavian pedigree. Viking’s carefully curated Norway cruises feature longer port calls and overnight stays that take advantage of the midnight sun in summertime and northern lights-spotting opportunities in winter. The fleet of near-identical adult-only ships all feature a Mamsen’s restaurant, named in honour of owner Tor Hagen’s mother. The 14-night Iceland & Norway’s Arctic Explorer itinerary crosses the Arctic Circle to visit the far north.

You can see it in style from the decks or balconies on Holland America Line’s new music-themed, 2,668-passenger flagship Rotterdam — the seventh vessel to bear the historic name for Holland America — with itineraries that include midnight sun sailings. Shore trips include Eidfjord, with the chance to go kayaking or sit back and enjoy a scenic drive to a cider and apple brandy factory.

Princess has round-trip sailings from Southampton on its cruise ships Sky Princess and Island Princess, with a range of quirky excursions. Our favourite? The chance to take a leisurely walk with llamas through fjord meadows. You’ll wander from the hamlet of Skjolden and follow trails set against a backdrop of some of the highest peaks in Europe. For something more conventional, there’s a stroll around Unesco-world heritage Bryggen, a medieval port founded by wealthy merchants and lined with paintbox-coloured wooden buildings.

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Ultimate Norway Expeditions

Norway is a country that demands to be explored rather than just seen, so we’ve designed the ultimate expedition cruise that really shows you the heart of Norway. New for January 2026, this unique adventure explores four regions above the Arctic Circle in winter. You’ll experience the glacial majesty of the Lyngen Alps, the dramatic beauty of the Lofoten Islands, the forested mountains of Vesterålen and the serenity of Senja. And as we sail, we’re not bound by a fixed itinerary – we’ll go where the best opportunities for activities and landings lie.

Adventures in the Frozen North

Heading above 66° North in winter means adventure. With your experienced Expedition Team, you’ll explore wild islands and deep fjords and venture to remote places where few people ever set foot.

Meet rarely visited communities and search for whales, eagles and other wildlife.

With a wide range of expedition equipment on board, you could don snowshoes and head off the beaten track into the snowy wilderness or hop in a kayak to explore a fjord up close.

Rare wildlife

Norway is a place where you can see whales, dolphins and many seabirds. The best time for spotting whales above the Arctic Circle is in January.

Wildlife in Norway

From the Eagles above, to the nomadic reindeer on land and whales along the coast, Norway is home to a wealth of wildlife. In winter, humpbacks and orcas can sometimes be spotted in the waters north of Tromsø.

Natural phenomena

Above the Arctic Circle, you’ll have a greater chance of seeing the Northern Lights illuminate Norway’s skies in winter. This is the time of year when the country is bathed in soft light and the snowy landscapes glimmer under starlight.

Expedition Ships to Norway

Your stylish expedition ship, MS Spitsbergen, is ideal for navigating the Norwegian fjords and exploring closer to shore. Smaller than many, MS Spitsbergen can venture where others can’t, giving you a true expedition experience.

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of traveling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'.

Supporting the community

When you travel with us, you’ll also be supporting local communities. The HX Foundation contributes to restoration projects in Norway, such as the upgrading of the North Cape Steps and the replenishment of the native underwater kelp forests along the coast.
