When I planned a two-month trip around the Black Sea in 2019, I made a commitment to myself: I would only travel with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack. That meant every item on my packing list had to be carefully considered—I knew I could probably get away without that second bathing suit or extra tank top, but I wasn’t going anywhere without bike shorts and an anti-chafing stick to keep my strong, curvy thighs comfortable as I walked an average of 15,000+ steps a day, mostly in a dress.

I even made space for a second pair of those bike shorts, because I wasn’t sure I could replace them on the road if the seams ripped or I forgot them at a hotel. I’m on the cusp of straight and plus sizes, which means I can’t always walk into a store and buy off the rack, particularly overseas. For travelers who wear larger sizes, there may be no options. So, packing smartly is crucial.

To help others master the art of packing, I asked mid- and plus-size frequent travelers what they would never leave home without. From a waffle robe that comfortably wraps around larger hips to compression packing cubes so you can pack more in, here are their 15 must-have products.

Packing gear

Large carry-on.

Tote & Carry Apollo 1 Snakeskin Backpack Purse & Rolling Duffle Bag

The primary thing Ashley Wall—better known on Instagram as @SimplyCurvee —wants plus-size travelers to know is that “they deserve to see the world and take up space as they are.” Her best tip? “People have this misconception [that] carry-ons are one size,” the creator of Fat Girls Travel Too says, but they aren't, so get the biggest one you can find that'll meet your airline's carry-on requirements.

Wall likes carry-on options with an accompanying tote bag like those from Tote & Carry. This set is made from vegan leather, and the tombstone-shaped backpack doubles as an everyday bag while you’re on the go. She also recommends suitcases from Take Off , which have removable wheels so one bag can slide under a seat and be counted as a personal item.

 OlimipiaFit Fanny Pack

“I am plus size and also live with a disability—a rare lung condition,” says content creator and activist Jae’lynn Chaney, who launched a petition to the FAA this spring to mandate that all airlines have a comprehensive customer-of-size policy.

When she’s in an airport, Chaney uses a wheelchair and getting her bags through check-in can be “an absolute struggle,” she says. To keep the luggage count in check, she likes to pack versatile clothes and change up her outfits with cute accessories like sunglasses and headbands. And for the items she needs to keep on hand after check-in, she recommends a plus-size friendly fanny pack to keep documents, a phone, and essentials at the ready. These ones from OlympiaFit have adjustable bands that extend up to 76 inches.

Compression cubes

Thule Compression Packing Cube Set

“If I were left to my own devices—and felt assured my bag would show up at my destination—I could probably fill a queen-bed[-sized] suitcase for a one-week trip,” says Seattle-based food and travel writer Naomi Tomky. Instead, she’s committed to carrying on luggage when en-route to a destination. Compression packing cubes from Thule are what make that a reality, says Tomky. “I don’t say life-changing lightly, but I no longer worry about fitting it all in—and they keep it organized.”

Bike shorts

undersummers bike shorts

I’m heading off for a two month journey around the Balkans this summer and have my bike shorts ready to go. These days, I like Undersummers , which are meant to be worn under a garment like a dress, so they are thinner than traditional bike shorts. They never ride up and leave a clean line, like a slip does, without the compression of Spanx.

Slip-on sneakers

Kizik Women's Madrid Eco-Knit

For getting through security, slip-on sneakers like the Madrid Eco-Knit from Kizik are helpful for travelers who are plus-size and those living with disabilities, says Jae’lynn Chaney, since there’s no lacing up required.

Compression socks

mojo plus size compression socks

Pair your slip-on sneakers with compression socks , which can help prevent deep vein thrombosis or DVT, which is more common among plus-size flyers. Plus, “they can help alleviate swelling caused by travel of all kinds, providing relief for your legs and feet during long journeys,” Chaney explains. (Want more recs? Quality walking shoes

new balance 990s

For getting through the airport and walking at at her destination, Wall says, “I have to wear New Balance—they're so comfortable.” She likes their 990s , which have a slightly vintage look.

Creature comforts

When activist and travel writer Annette Richmond started working in the plus-size travel space in 2015, “people didn't—and still don’t—realize that we have different needs,” she says.

Richmond wanted to start a community where fat travelers could ask questions and share information with each other. “Mostly, because I needed those resources and I didn’t want to feel like I was doing it alone,” she adds. It’s grown into the Fat Girls Traveling online community, which includes a private Facebook group with nearly 19,000 members.

When it comes to packing, Richmond says, “As a fat person it can be really tricky to be a carry-on queen—I’m not going to lie. Our clothes just take up more space.” She always makes sure to keep a packing cube of underwear and bras in her backpack since they can be particularly hard to find in larger sizes abroad. “It’s clean and right next to my computer and camera—my most prized possessions,” Richmond says.

Large towel

4Monster EVA Antibacterial Travel Towel

For trips to warmer places, Richmond recommends a bath sheet or larger towel for the pool like 4Monster’s camping towel , which dries quickly, is compact, and available up to an XXL, which measures 35 by 71 inches.

Body powder

megababe bust dust

To keep dry when you’re not by the water, Richmond likes Megababe’s Bust Dust body power, which absorbs bust and other unwanted sweat.

Pressure relief cushion

cushion lab pressure relief cushion

Once on the plane, a large pressure relief cushio n “is a game-changer for anyone who struggles to fit comfortably in a single airplane seat and may otherwise be forced to sit awkwardly between two seats, with a metal bar causing discomfort,” says Chaney.

Anti-chafing gel

Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel

Tomky recommends Monistat’s Chafing Relief Powder Gel , which “feels like a matte gel moisturizer and it works like a dream. I can sweat my giant thighs off and not get any chafing.”

Large bath robe

Parachute Waffle Robe

“This might sound like a lot, but I usually like to pack my own bathrobe,” says Kristin Corpuz, who has traveled to over 20 countries for work. “Bathrobes at hotels are typically a one-size-fits-most situation and they often don't even close around my hips,” says Corpus, who describes herself as mid-sized. Her go-to is Parachute's Waffle Robe , which goes up to a size 3X, and folds down fairly flat.

Personal fan

JISULIFE Mini Fan

“For a long time, I told myself that I was too fat to travel,” says Kirsty Leanne. “But once I started saying yes to things, my confidence in my body grew too.” Now, she organizes group trips for plus-size travelers to places like Bali and creates content to help others feel comfortable while traveling.

No matter where she’s going, she says, “I always make sure to take a portable electronic fan with me.” A handheld one is fine in many situations, she says, but depending on the activity, a neck fan can be particularly helpful.

Plus-size travel: Tips for a more comfortable trip from a “passenger of size”

dual passports what to do

It's no secret that some airlines pack passengers in to increase profits. This means that seats can be smaller and narrower. For a plus-size or big-and-tall passenger like myself, this makes for an uncomfortable experience. As a person whose weight has yo-yo-ed over the years, I have still been able to travel happily and I want you to enjoy it as well.

I don't want to waste vacation time and money traveling to an area that doesn't or can't make (safe) accommodations for my body. This is especially important when traveling with a group of people whose physiques may be different. Because your friends may not view you as plus-size, they may be unaware of the adjustments you make to participate in group activities.

Here are some tips for navigating travels as a plus-size traveler.

Sign up for the free daily TPG newsletter for more travel tips!

Do your research first

Are you going to a place that is plus-size-friendly in the accessibility of its attractions and public transportation? Will you need clothing and/or footwear that makes you uncomfortable? For some, wearing a swimsuit in the presence of smaller bodies can be overwhelming. Work with a travel agent who specializes in plus-size travel.

Snoop through Facebook and Instagram and scout the tagged photos for the events/venues you plan to visit. This allows you to gauge if the places on your itineraries can accommodate plus-size visitors. For me, this also includes looking at the type of chairs (and layout) provided at restaurants, so I can know where I'd like to sit to avoid embarrassment. You can also download the AllGo app , which is basically Trip Advisor for plus-size folks.

Bathing hacks are important before a vacation because all tubs are not created equal . When booking your hotel, choose a room with a walk-in shower or one with a Jacuzzi or garden tub. If your favorite hotel doesn't offer these options, ask about hand-held showers or shower benches. Aboard cruise ships, bathroom showers in the cabin are small. Try using the showers in the gym or spa areas instead.

Go for the upgrade

If you're taking the train or a car service to your destination, choose an option that gives you extra leg and seat room. This goes for renting cars, too. Although we all love a good deal, compact cars aren't spacious enough for me to drive comfortably, being above average in height and weight. When selecting your car type, check out the specs to see the spaces will be OK for you as a driver and passenger.

The Critical Points: Five steps to a perfect car rental

On buses or streetcars, I try to get as close to the handicap- or exit-row seating as possible because those spaces are typically roomier.

Pack properly

Pack proper shoes. Sure, the $10 flats from Target are cute, but are they practical for a day of sightseeing and exploring? We're not telling you to wear the dad tennis shoes, but consider comfortable options, like Skechers' cute ballet flats that have memory foam, just like their slip-on sneakers.

Comfortable clothing is imperative for a day of exploring. Buy light or moisture-wicking materials for hot weather. Wear Bandelettes (anti-chafing thigh bands) or biker shorts under your dress. Have a mini-fan to keep you cool. Throw some wipes or hydrating facial spray in your bag to keep you feeling fresh all day.

Advocate for yourself

Speak up to let your tour guide or travel partner(s) know when you need a break or ask about the safety hazards or restrictions of an activity. Speaking up can seem daunting, but having someone automatically offer you something just because you're larger, is worse. Don't be afraid to ask for whatever you need to enjoy your vacation.

Above all, remember that your vacation will be as fun as you make it.

A Guide to Plus-Size Traveling, With Tips From 2 Experts

Plus-Size Travel Tips

Everyone deserves to explore the world, regardless of size. Yet many plus-size travelers struggle to find inclusive and comfortable options while vacationing.

Whether it's cramped airplane seats , travel excursions that don't account for diverse body types, or hotel rooms that lack the necessary accommodations, traveling while plus size does not come without its challenges. With the right preparation and research, however, traveling does not have to be an anxiety-inducing experience simply because of the size of your body.

Below, PS spoke with two plus-size travel experts to help all vacationers feel more confident traveling. With their first-hand experience and guidance, you'll be ready to take on your next vacation with ease.

The Best Travel Tips for Plus-Size Travelers

The first thing you should do before booking a vacation anywhere is research. "Investing time in research helps you feel prepared, save money, and minimize potential challenges for a more enjoyable journey," plus-size travel expert and content creator Jae'lynn Chaney says. Prior to your trip, she recommends looking into the location you want to travel to, the airline, the hotel, and any activities you may be interested in. To make things more comprehensive, here are some key components to consider for every part of your trip.

When Deciding on Location

Unfortunately, not all destinations are plus-size friendly, Chaney says. "Many destinations feature uneven terrain, steep hills, or unpaved paths, which can pose challenges for plus-size individuals — especially those with mobility issues," she adds. Some places with older infrastructure may also lack modern accessibility features like ramps or elevators.

For this reason, Chaney recommends "researching how easy it is to get around the destination, including public transportation, sidewalks, and attractions." You can also watch videos on TikTok or Instagram to get a "good idea of what to expect," Kirsty Leanne, the owner of the Plus Size Travel Too travel blog, recommends. "It's the most accurate way to see things in advance."

That said, don't let your size stop you from traveling to any location, even if it's not the most accommodating. It's your vacation, and you can tailor your itinerary by staying in a hotel that accommodates your size or picking activities that match your mobility level. In Leanne's experience, she notes, "a lot of places I didn't think would be plus size friendly actually ended up surprising me."

Chaney says the most travel-friendly places in her experience have been Las Vegas; Maui, Hawaii; Toronto; and Barcelona, Spain. "These destinations are just a few examples of places that are known for their plus-size travel friendliness, offering inclusive amenities, accessible facilities, and a welcoming atmosphere for travelers of all sizes," she adds.

Leanne, meanwhile, enjoyed Mexico. "Everyone was so friendly and welcoming," she says, "and I didn't feel like my size was ever an issue."

When Packing

There are a few key items Chaney recommends to always pack for your vacations:

  • Compression socks , to prevent swelling and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Epsom salt , which helps with pain relief and swelling
  • An anti-chafe remedy , like petroleum jelly or Megababe . Biker shorts also work!
  • Supportive shoes for walking
  • A seat cushion for extra support on your flight or drive

When Booking Your Stay

Inquire about room dimensions and bed-weight limits when choosing where you'll stay, Chaney says. You can call the hotel directly or look this up on the hotel's website. Also, if mobility is an issue for you, opt for a hotel, Airbnb, or other accommodation that either has a working elevator or sits on the ground floor.

If you have any concerns about booking a hotel room, advocate for yourself. "Communicate your needs and preferences to the hotel," Chaney says. Depending on what the request is, they may be able to help you.

When Flying

When booking a flight, Chaney recommends looking for airlines that offer a "customer of size" policy, like Southwest. The airline allows customers who "encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s)" to "proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat(s) is available." Per the Southwest policy, you can either pay for both seats upfront, and then, following the flight, contact the airline for a refund for one seat, or you can discuss your seating needs with the customer service agent at the departure gate. Just note that if the flight is full, a customer service agent may not be able to accommodate your request.

If you're looking to book outside Southwest, look into airlines with seat upgrades that offer more leg room, like premium economy seats or business class, Chaney says. If you don't want to spend additional money, however, Chaney recommends sitting in an aisle seat. Whatever you decide, most airlines will have their seat dimensions listed on their website if it's helpful to know what the space will look like before entering the flight.

Once on the flight, if you think you may need a seatbelt extender, ask the flight attendant immediately upon boarding the plane. "Asking when you board is easier, as they'll either hand it to you there and then, or bring it to you in your seat," Leanne says. Do not bring your own seat belt extender though, as it may not be FAA-approved.

Lastly, if booking a long flight, Chaney recommends choosing a flight option with layovers. If you're a plus-size traveler who can't fit comfortably in the plane lavatory, this allows you to have bathroom breaks when you need it.

When Driving

If you're renting a car, pick larger-sized vehicles since these "accommodate plus-size travelers better," Chaney says. Unlike when flying, you can purchase and bring your own universal seat belt extender if you want some additional comfiness while in the car. This seat belt extender on Amazon is easily adjustable and extends 14 inches.

If you're driving to your destination and using your own car, take as many breaks as you need during the trip to stretch and move your body.

When Planning Your Itinerary

Whether you want to do an activity like scuba diving, horseback riding, or getting a massage, look for activities that are suitable for people of all body types and abilities. "Find tours, attractions, and experiences that prioritize inclusivity and provide comfortable seating or equipment for everyone," Chaney says. She also recommends you "check the weight limits on activities and excursions beforehand to ensure a smooth experience."

If sightseeing is more your thing, understand your limitations and mobility restrictions. "While some individuals may be able to navigate challenging terrain or historic sites with ease, others may face greater difficulties due to their size or mobility challenges," Chaney says. For this reason, do some research on the sightseeing destination to know how far you would need to walk, how many steps there are, and what people's general review of the experience is.

When eating out, it's never a bad idea to call the restaurant beforehand to ask about their chairs. Prioritize restaurants that have booth options or chairs with no arms on them. (And if you decide to grab a bite to eat with no notice, don't be afraid to specifically ask the staff for a booth or chair with no arms.)

"By researching accessibility options, accommodation features, and activity suitability beforehand, individuals can make informed decisions about where to travel and how to plan their trips effectively," Chaney says.

Additional Resources

While it's normal to feel anxious or stressed planning for a trip, focus on how much fun you'll have discovering a new destination instead of thinking about the potential challenges, Chaney says. And if you're ever uncomfortable, don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. "For me, it's all about advocating for yourself. Whether that's asking for a more comfortable seat in a restaurant or asking for a different seat on a flight, the more you start advocating for yourself the easier travel will be," says Leanne.

For additional resources, check out Leanne's website, Plus Size Travel Too , which is a resource and hub for plus-size travelers, and Chaney's TikTok , which contains additional videos on plus-size resources and advice.

Comfy and confident: 6 easy hacks for plus-size travel

Plus-size travel hacks - Chantel Loura

Plus-size travel blogger Chantel Loura (also known as Voyaging Vagabond ) has been exploring the world for the last seven years, backpacking her way through Europe, South America and Australia. Here are her top travel hacks for plus-size travellers. Everything you need to know to stay comfy and confident on your adventures.

Okay, so you’ve finally bought that plane ticket, scooped up your passport, and you’re ready to take off on your next adventure. First off, KUDOS to you! My name is Chantel Loura, your new travel bestie, and the loudly laughing, snack-loving creator behind the plus-size travel blog, Voyaging Vagabond .

For the past seven years, I’ve been hopping all over the globe with my trusty backpack, and I’m here to offer you some practiced and proven travel hacks to help make long-term, plus-size travel a breeze.

1.     Bring comfortable shoes

One thing is guaranteed when you’re traveling long term: there’s a lot of walking. Whether you’re strolling around a sunny park, touring local markets or getting yourself to the bus station, hitting your step goal will be no problem. This means that comfortable, well-supported shoes are a must.

plus size travel must haves

The best shoes for plus-size travel combine functionality, fashion and comfort. I’ve found tennis sneakers work best in almost any travel situation. Consider wider styles like Superstars, or Nizzas from Adidas. Perfect for a wander around a new city, or a night out.

My go-to sandals are Birkenstocks and Tevas . Birkenstocks come in an array of styles, with softer footbeds, adjustable straps and different models. Tevas are also a trendy option, and they have adjustable straps, which make them easier on wider feet.

2.     Find the right bag

Finding luggage that works for you is one of the make-or-break points when travelling.

If you prefer a suitcase, do your best to keep it light. This is always a bold statement for me when it comes to plus-size travel. Due to the size of our garments, it might not always be easy. But you’ll be thankful for the light suitcase when you get lost looking for your hostel, or trying to lift your bag onto a train luggage rack. Also look for durable options, since you might be passing along cobblestones, dirt roads, and uneven streets.

For my backpack people, we can all agree on the perks, like having free hands in the airport, or not having to lift a bag up metro stairs. But with these perks it’s also important to find a bag that fits your body shape. In the past, I went to a local outdoor supplies retailer and received a proper fitting. During this, an associate took my measurements and presented me with options that work best for me. I’ve been using my trusty Kelty Redwing 44L bag since then. Seven years later, I still swear by it.

If you’re concerned about the hip belt or chest strap fitting, there are solutions for that too. Companies like Osprey , Kelty and Gregory offer accessories that fit onto most of their packs. Accessories like hip belt strap extenders and chest strap extenders can also be found quite cheap on Amazon.

3.     Avoid Overpacking

Let me say, you do not want to be that person struggling to wrangle four bags onto a tight van, and you certainly don’t want to be that person buckling under the weight of an uncomfortable backpack. I’ve found myself moving between busy train stations, chaotic airports, tight metro stations, ferry ramps, tight bus aisles, small tuk-tuks, and even the occasional pick-up truck bed. Having one bag that I can easily grab has been a lifesaver when navigating these places.

plus size travel must haves

Pack articles of clothing that mix and match and can be styled in multiple ways. Yes, I know you want to pack your Insta-perfect outfit, but consider a few colourful staple pieces instead. Coordinated sets are a stellar option, as well as a vibrant dress that also works as a tank top.

Another tip: get the most out of your space! Use packing cubes and roll all your clothes. Between one large packing cube and one medium packing cube, as a US size 18 traveller, I typically can fit my undergarments, two bathing suits, 10 tops, one skirt, three pairs of shorts, and two pairs of pants. When everything is mix-and-match, that equals about 60 different outfit combinations, and that’s not even including my accessories.

4.     Advocate for yourself

Many plus-size people carry certain defence responses that we’ve learned to avoid persecution for our size. Rather than use our voice to say we’re uncomfortable, we stay silent, we try to make ourselves smaller and do whatever we can to avoid attention to our weight. Because (frankly) we don’t want to be judged.

But I’m here to say, that time is over . Speak up for yourself when travelling! If you need a moment to catch your breath, take it. If you need a seat belt extender on a flight, you deserve that safety. If you want to skip an activity because you have different mobility capabilities, there’s nothing wrong with that. If you need to take up space, you are worthy of that, without feeling bad. If you need a bottom bunk to sleep comfortably, ask for it. You’ll find that people are kinder than you might expect, and most will be happy to accommodate you where they can.

Stop suffering in silence and say what you need. This is your trip too and there’s nothing wrong with going at a pace that works for you.

5.     Avoid ChubRub

Ohhhh ChubRub, the fiery prison sentence that we know all too well as plus-size travellers! It’s the terrible after effect of thighs rubbing together for an extended period of time, resulting in a tender, sensitive rash that makes walking extremely uncomfortable and painful. However, here’s the good news: there are countless options to avoid this.

One of the most popular is wearing bike shorts underneath your skirt or dress. However, if you’re travelling to a warm destination and want to avoid the extra layer, consider one of the many anti-chafing creams available. One of my personal favourites is Thigh Rescue from Megababe. This small deodorant stick easily fits in my bag, making it super easy to touch up during the day.

6.     Do your research

If you’re worried about weight limits or whether certain activities will be available to you, do your research first. Send emails with your questions, or better yet, give the business a quick call. If you are unable to find the research you’re looking for, try posting in plus-size-friendly travel groups on Facebook – Fat Girls Traveling and Curvy (Girls LOVE Travel®) are good places to start – or check plus-size travel websites like Chubby Diaries and Plus Size Travel Too .

Even looking up the hashtag #plussizetravelbloggers on IG and TikTok will expose you to so many great plus-size creators. They offer valuable insight and deliver a whole lot of travel inspo.

A guide to travelling the world as a plus-size person

By Stephanie Yeboah

Beach Milos Greece

As every keen traveller knows, there are a number of checks and research one must undertake before travelling to a new country. We all know what they are, for the most part, basic questions such as ‘what’s the local currency?’, ‘‘how far behind is the time difference?", and "is public transport safe in this country?" Well, as a plus-sized person who loves travel, here is where things have always been a little more difficult.

When you’re plus-sized there are a few more things we need to add to our list. What is the weight limit for  carry-on luggage ? Is this country body positive or fatphobic? Which airlines have the widest seats? When do I need to buy two seats?

Beach Haena Hawai

On a recent flight to Japan , I crucially forgot to consider that last detail, and so ended up flying 11 hours in an extremely tiny economy seat. Not only was I sitting half-in half-out of my seat for the entire flight, but I also happened to be sitting next to someone who made it incredibly clear that my presence next to him caused him discomfort; huffing, puffing and even nudging me in the ribs every 10 minutes. Needless to say, it made for an excruciatingly embarrassing experience, albeit one I know many plus-sized people have had to face when travelling.

Now that travel has resumed worldwide, many people are able to enjoy the freedom of going on much-needed holidays once more. But for plus-sized people, that joy is often weighed down by the stresses of air travel, and the discomfort that can come with it. Below, I’ve rounded up a few tips and tricks that I’ve learnt over the years as a plus-sized traveller, in the hope that this can help others travel as comfortably as possible and rediscover the joys of exploring the world, without worrying about size.

Beach Little Xigia beach. Zakynthos.

1. Ask for a seatbelt extender if you need it

If you feel too uncomfortable to ask while in your seat, make sure to ask the flight attendant when you board the plane, giving them your seat number as you do so. There are some seatbelt extenders that can be bought online if you have severe anxieties about asking, however, the policies and legalities for this vary from airline to airline, so make sure to research your airline’s policy before doing so.

2. Use vacuum storage bags

The  spacesaver vacuum packing bags  have been an absolute lifesaver for packing clothes when travelling. Plus-size clothing tends to be bulkier, especially when it comes to coats and jumpers, so using vacuum bags can help you save serious amounts of space in your luggage. The bags come with a manual pump that reduces the volume of clothing by up to 80 per cent, giving you the opportunity to pack as many items as you need, without compromising on space.

3. Choose size-friendly airlines

There are few things as painfully uncomfortable as being a size 26 and sitting in a tiny economy seat for long-haul flights. Unfortunately, flying tends to be a one-size-fits-all situation, unless you have the money to afford more spacious seating, and seats are only getting smaller in a bid to fit more passengers onboard.

There are a few options, however. The most obvious one is to upgrade to  premium economy  or  business class  however this can be pricey and not always an option if you are sticking to a budget. Researching the best airlines for wide economy seating is also a great way to go if you’re nervous about the seats. My personal favourite has always been British Airways as their economy seating can accommodate up to a UK size 28. Websites such as  Which?  provides great information on the best plus-size-friendly airlines. Alternatively,  SeatGuru  also provides lots of logistical information about planes, including seat widths and legroom sizes.

4. Remember products to help with chafing

There’s nothing more unpleasant when you’re in a  hot destination  and cannot wear skirts or dresses due to dreaded chafing – the after-effect of thighs rubbing together for long periods when walking in warm weather, resulting in sore, sensitive skin. Enter anti-chafing balm  Thigh Rescue by Megababe : the small pot fits neatly and easily in any purse, making it accessible for touch-ups throughout the day.

5. Travel comfortably

It’s always best to avoid jeans or restrictive clothing when travelling, especially during long-haul flights. Whether you’re journeying by plane, train or car, comfortable clothing is a must. Light t-shirts with leggings (my favourite is the  Girlfriend Collective leggings  which go up to a UK size 30),  and unitards  worn with an  oversized shirt  or an H&M  sweater  are your best bet. This will help you stay cool and comfortable while travelling.

6. Be smart when packing footwear

As someone who has wide feet and big feet, I have to be careful when packing footwear as shoes can take up a large amount of space in luggage, especially during winter trips. Whilst packing, decide on the types of shoes you’ll need and how many outfits you’d be able to wear them with. I normally pack one pair of  Chelsea boots , one pair of  Converse trainers  (not only do they go with EVERY outfit, but they are wide-fit friendly and are super comfortable), one pair of  chunky heeled shoes , and two pairs of  flat sandals .

7. Speak up for yourself

It’s pretty typical for plus-sized people to stay quiet or apologise for our bodies when faced with a challenging situation whilst abroad. Instead of speaking up, we tend to make ourselves smaller and do whatever we can in order to draw attention away from our weight. It’s important to remember that we have just as much right to travel as everyone else, and that means advocating for ourselves if we become uncomfortable.

This is easier said than done, but anything from asking a tour guide to walk slower on a guided tour; asking a flight attendant if you could move to a spare empty seat if you’re uncomfortable, or asking hotel and restaurant staff for bigger seats without armrests can make a huge difference to your travel experience. You’ll find that people are kinder than you might expect, and most will be happy to try and accommodate you where they can.

8. Have fun

No one wants to pay to feel insecure and down on holiday, and spending the majority of the time comparing our bodies to others can be incredibly draining. When I go to hot destinations and wish to visit the beach, I buy swimsuits that make me feel incredibly confident. Remember, the size of the swimsuit doesn’t matter – what matters is that you feel comfortable and confident. Simply Be have a great range of well-fitting plus-size swim and beachwear in a variety of different styles and designs.

How To Overcome Doubt & Travel Confidently As A Plus Size Nomad

By michele herrmann, jessie on a journey contributor.

This post is part of Jessie on a Journey’s  Inspiring Travelers series .

When you hear the phrase “adventure traveler,” what kind of person comes to mind?

Whether female or male, it’s a likely guess that you imagined someone lean and muscular, though wait a minute while intrepid traveler Hannah Logan changes that.

The Canadian travel blogger behind  Eat Sleep Breathe Travel and Ireland Stole My Heart,  Logan has dealt with mixed reactions and off-the-cuff remarks about her appearance while traveling. Nonetheless, she continues her journey onward.

For Jessie on a Journey’s  Inspiring Travelers series, Logan shares what she thinks of the term “plus size” as a traveler, plus size travel tips and how she keeps a positive, healthy mindset on the road.

plus size travel tips

Table of Contents

1) You refer to yourself as a plus size adventure traveler. What has led you to apply this self-description?

To be honest, on a day to day basis, I refer to myself more as “curvy” than “plus size.”

Plus size is a term that relates mostly to clothing, and I hover on the edge. I’ve actually been told by a few people that I’m not actually “plus size”; but fact is, when it comes to travel, I think that I am.

I’m bigger than the typical female traveler as pictured in media; whether it be the top female Instagram accounts, bloggers or even models depicted on vacation advertising. So whether the term is curvy, voluptuous or plus size doesn’t really matter; my body size is different than the usual one depicted by travel media.

I think that using the term “plus size” draws more attention and allows me to open a dialogue about the realities about being a bigger traveler which, in my experience, isn’t nearly as horrible as many make it out to be.

plus size travel tips

2) What is it about adventure travel specifically that attracts you ?

I’ve always wanted to be like Indiana Jones!

Most little girls dream about being ballerinas or pop stars; but, I dreamed of discovering treasures and far off places.

Now that I’m older, I know that being Indiana Jones isn’t a real job, but exploring off the beaten path destinations gives me that same thrill of adventure that I had as a child when watching those movies.

3) What challenges do you face as a plus size adventure traveler? How do you overcome them?

Honestly, not a lot. Which is why I’m so open to talking about it and quick to identify as a plus size traveler.

Any articles surrounding bigger people traveling are always nightmare stories, but mine aren’t.

Granted, I haven’t had any problems with fitting into airplane seats and I know that’s a big concern to many, so I can’t speak specifically to that. But overall, I’m not treated differently abroad than at home.

Have there been a couple of snide comments about my weight and size while on the road? Yes, but that’s something can — and has — happened at home too. There hasn’t been anything extreme or of out of the ordinary, and the few rude comments I’ve heard are rare.

plus size travel tips

4) What has been your favorite country/city for adventure, to date?

The place that stands out to me the most is Bagan, Myanmar because it’s where I felt the most like Indiana Jones.

It wasn’t hard-core adventure; but it was off the beaten track, remote and parts of it felt undiscovered. My friends and I rented electric motorbikes to explore the more outlying temples where no other tourists went. We drove through farmers’ fields, our bike batteries died, we got lost. But we also found dozens of amazing, crumbling temples that we then climbed to watch the sunrise or sunset or just look at the views.

It’s been a few years since I went, but Bagan remains one of my most cherished travel experiences. I loved a lot of Southeast Asia for adventure, whether it be hiking in the hills, or scuba diving in the coral reefs and to see shipwrecks.

5) In terms of packing, what challenges do you face as a plus size traveler? Any plus size travel tips?

For me, it’s just a matter of knowing that shopping will probably not be easy, so I always pack too much. It’s not a big deal, but I often am jealous of those with their carry-on only backpacks for a two-month trip when I have to check my bag, especially because it does end up costing me more.

At the end of the day though, paying a bit more for the backup is 100x better than worrying about having to try to find a bra in my size in Southeast Asia. For that reason, my biggest plus size travel tip is that too much is actually better than too little.

6) What pre-notions and stereotypes do plus size travelers face on the road that you’d like to dispel?

The biggest stereotype I’ve seen is that plus size people are lazy.

Sometimes I’ve gotten looks of surprise when I do something active, or even more when I’m good at it. I’ve done a few hikes that people were surprised I wanted to do. When scuba diving, some of my guides have been taken aback by what a strong swimmer I am.

It can be frustrating, but I also kind of enjoy challenging those conceptions.

plus size travel tips

7) What has been one of the easiest countries to travel through as a plus size traveler? Why?

I don’t believe that plus size travel is necessarily hard like so many people make it out to be, so there really isn’t an “easy” choice. I guess if I had to choose, I’d say Canada — my home country — or the USA, because larger sizes are considered more normal, so there is more of a market for it. Meaning I don’t have to worry so much about packing extra. If I want or need to go shopping, it’s not going to be as stressful.

8) What has been one of the most difficult countries to travel as a plus size traveler? Why?

I think that Asia in general has a bad reputation of being more uncomfortable for plus size or bigger travelers. Forget the size of my butt. At 5’8,” I towered over men and women alike in most of the countries I went to.

It’s impossible not to stand out, and they can be pretty blunt about it.

I’ve heard quite a few stories of bigger travelers — men and women — being ridiculed in public, but the worst I experienced was a local vendor telling me that the elephant pants I was looking at wouldn’t fit. Sure he was blunt, but he was also right.

plus size travel tips

9) What is one experience you’ve had on the road as a curvy traveler that completely surprised you?

In Hoi An, Vietnam, I wanted to get some custom clothes made. I was worried it might be awkward and that the tailors would maybe take advantage of my larger size to charge me more; however, it actually ended up being a fun experience.

A couple of the tailors loved my curves and told me they were jealous. One in particular kept trying to get me to go with lower necklines telling me I should “show them off.”

I left feeling pretty flattered, which was a pleasant surprise.

10) What plus size travel tips would you give to someone who is nervous to travel due to being curvy?

I’d love to say don’t worry about it, it’s not worth the stress; but until you realize that on your own, you’re going to worry.

Therefore, my suggestion is to do your research and make sure you are prepared.

  • Are there shops with larger sizes where you are going? No? Pack more just in case.
  • Do you think you will need a seatbelt extender on the plane? Buy your own or board early and ask for one in advance.

I think that the biggest stress is the unknown; so if you can prepare yourself as much as possible, you will be able to enjoy yourself more.

Nice that you write about this subject. It’s for sure a little taboo to many travelers. And there is no need for you to worry about being curvy. You are still a good looking and successful woman, who gets a lot more out of life than the average person. Greetings from a guy who is also a little chubby. But I still travel the world by foot and bicycle and I bloody love my life.

There’s something about traveling that is equal parts excitement and stress, especially when it comes time for you to bust out your suitcase and prepare to pack. What comes along with you can vary tremendously depending on the length of your trip and the occasion. Thankfully, the Cut Shop team has traveled far and wide, and has picked up a few tips, tricks, and essentials for packing well. Regardless of whether it’s a quick weekend escapade or a whole month abroad, here are the 39 best travel essentials worth taking along, listed according to the length of time spent away from home .

For Overnight Trips

Whether you’re only traveling ten minutes away for a staycation or venturing to a nearby city for a day, overnight trips can be just as challenging to pack for as longer ones. Our best tip is try to be strategic about stowing all the necessities in a larger tote ba g.

iMangoo Protective Cable Organizer Case

Keep all your chargers and cords organized and untangled in one place. This little case makes sure you can actually find what you are looking for, especially in the depths of a big bucket-shaped bag.

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

The Nap Dress is comfortable enough for any road trip or train ride or even to sleep in. You really can’t go wrong — it’s like wearing your pajamas but still looking totally presentable. We particularly like the wrinkle-resistant navy dress for easy wear on the road.

Baggu Go Pouch Set

This three-pack of pouches might be one of The Cut Shop ream’s favorite purchases. Perfect for everyday use, the pouches are great for housing everything from makeup to dirty clothes to receipts. We always have one in our bags, no matter if we’re leaving the house for a night, an hour, or a whole week.

July Everyday Garment Tote

Perfect for event-specific travel, this tote doubles as a garment bag, protecting those special-occasion outfits. It has just enough space to also pack a pair of shoes you do not want to commute in.

Saie Slip Tint Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35 Sunscreen

One of the best tinted moisturizers out there, this option from Saie offers hydration and some SPF and will give you light coverage with a dewy glow. When you can’t bring your entire medicine cabinet, this is a great option that combines a bunch of products in a multistep routine.

HoodHealth Stainless Steel

Because hydration is always important, especially when you’re traveling.

Leeshine Ice Roller for Face and Eyes

Just because you’re not doing your skin-care routine in your bathroom at home doesn’t mean your skin should suffer. This ice rollers will fit perfectly in your toiletry bag and come in handy first thing in the morning.

Emi Jay Big Effing Clip

Sometimes on those quick trips, we push washing our hair an extra day (or three) so we can leave all our heat tools at home. With some dry shampoo and a cute hair claw , no one has to know.

Weekend Trips and Excursions

Whether you are heading out of town for a wedding, trying to get away for a little R&R, or traveling for work, when it comes to packing a weekender or a smaller suitcase, organization is key.

Béis The Weekend Duffel Bag

There are so many options out there for weekender bags, but this water-repellent tote from Béis ticks all our boxes including the trolley pass-through pocket to attach to your suitcase and save your shoulders. This one is just over $100.

Guanda Car Vent Phone Mount

Most of the time, travel is associated with flying, but whether by choice or not, sometimes the trip involves hours of car time. A phone mount changes the game on a long road trip and is definitely safer.

Comrad Nylon Knee High Socks

For those longer flights where you are in a confined space and not moving around as much (looking at you, window-seat fliers), compression socks can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet.

Loop Quiet Earbuds

Weekend trips can sometimes mean a jam-packed itinerary, so when you want to sleep, you want to snooze uninterrupted. Enter Loop, a reusable silicone earplug that allows you to get the ultimate fit (it comes in four sizes) so you can get in that power nap.

Le Specs Outta Love Sunglasses

Forgetting your sunglasses on vacation, especially when headed somewhere sunny, is a rookie mistake, which is why this pair from Le Specs is perfect to just keep in your weekend bag so you are never without.. They’re stylish, sturdy, and under $70 , in case you end up losing or breaking them.

Cadence Build Your 6 Bundle

Normally, travel containers are not the most stylish or multifunctional. But these Cadence capsules are both of those things. Unlike traditional travel containers, these can be used for anything from storing pills and skincare products to necklaces and hand cream. Plus, you can design your own set to include different labels and colors

Everlane the Relaxed Oxford Shirt

You can never go wrong with a classic button-up . It’s a must-have for any trip, especially a weekend one when space is limited. Wear it on its own, with a dress or pants, or as a bathing suit cover-up.

Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray

The Tower28 spray is our skin-care savior , and if you’re looking to pack minimally for weekend trips, this needs to be in the toiletry bag. Perfect for sensitive skin, it’s multifunctional, and a spritz delivers a refreshing dose of hydration and soothes stressed-out skin.

Kindle Paperwhite

Not only do books take up valuable real estate in a carry-on, they add a bit of weight too. A Kindle is so low profile and light that we do not even think twice about tossing it in our bag. It also saves us time doing the math on how many books we should be bringing on a trip because our next read is just a Wi-Fi connection away.

Anywhere From Five Days to a Week and a Half

A full-fledged trip that still limits you to a carry-on may be the most difficult to pack for. Europe,Cabo, our parents’ house, it’s all about making the most of the room you have, even if you can’t help but pack all your sunglasses , expensive skin care, and cute outfits.

Reformation Fantino Cashmere Collared Cardigan

This cashmere cardigan is amazing on its own or as a layering piece in case you get chilly en route or in your hotel room. When you’re packing a carry-on, the more pieces you have that you can wear multiple different ways, the better.

Dagne Dover Remi Glasses Case

Sometimes you just can’t decide which sunglasses to bring, especially if you are going somewhere extra-sunny. This protective case from Dagne Dover allows you to bring three pairs in a very compact and convenient case that is easy to hang up when you get to your final destination.

Away Bigger Carry-On

There is a reason you can’t travel without seeing one of these suitcases. It fits in the overhead bin of most major U.S. airlines and allows travelers enough room to store all their belongings while remaining light, sturdy, and sleek. Plus, it comes in seven attractive colors and has a USB external battery for those extra-long travel days. It is an essential for the majority of trips you will probably take.

Calpak Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set

We love using packing cubes when we need to keep a duffel bag from becoming total chaos or for just staying organized when we’re traveling somewhere where we will be doing a wide range of activities that require very different wardrobe options. These packing cubes from Calpak are cute and will help bring some order to a carry-on.

Aesop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash

Whether you are in the window seat and do not want to disturb your neighbors to wash your hands or need to do a quick clean after pumping gas on a road trip, having some sort of hand sanitizer while traveling is a good idea. This one from Aesop obviously smells amazing.

Baggu Packable Sun Hat

Senior writer Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz swears by bringing this foldable sun hat no matter the amount of time you plan to spend in the sun. It packs up so small, it’s easily justifiable to toss in your bag. If nothing else, it’s cute for a photo op or two.

Two Weeks or Longer

Uniqlo Wide-Fit Pleated Pants

Wearing trousers on a plane not only saves room in your suitcase but also makes you feel more put-together on the go. These comfy but tailored pants from Uniqlo can be worn casually or dressed up, making them the perfect pair to travel in for long periods.

Merit Flush Balm Cream Blush

A two-in-one product that is perfect for face and lips is a godsend on the road, and this Merit lightly tinted balm is highly rated. It is the perfect product to throw in your bag for when you want to do a real quick touch-up, no matter where you are. Not to mention it’s one of our senior shopping editor’s favorite cream blushes .

Rimowa Classic Check-In L

The pinnacle of traveling well comes down to one word: Rimowa. The cases are classic, luxurious, and durable, though definitely a splurge. If you’re traveling for long stretches of time, and often, they can be worth the price point.

Wild One Travel Carrier

Pets under 20 pounds are allowed to fly in a carrier under the seat in front of you, and this stylish option from Wild One opens into a bed so your pet can relax at the gate before you both board.

4PCS Refillable Travel Perfume Spray Bottles

Most fragrances do not come in a three-ounce bottle, and it can be quite a risk to send a glass bottle in your checked bag, so it might be safer to opt for something like this. Even when you are not traveling, these little cases are convenient to throw in a bag so that you always can carry around your favorite scent.

A Month or More

We’re way past suggesting hand cream and new luggage because, at this point, you’re practically moving to your destination. These are the things that upgrade you from a casual traveler to a pro and will make your longer flights and longer stays more comfortable

Bearaby Travel Napper

Carrying an extra six pounds might seem a bit excessive, but if you’re on a long flight and you’re staying over a month in your new destination, you might as well be as cozy and comfortable as possible. This travel0size weighted blanket from Bearaby comes in its own duffel bag, so it can easily be your personal item or be checked in with no problem.

FunTouch Rechargeable Travel Makeup Vanity Mirror

Want to be able to still do full glam while you’re away? This rechargeable and slim travel vanity mirror will help your makeup look flawless no matter your lighting situation.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

You may have seen this on your TikTok FYP. It allows you to connect your Bluetooth headphones (hello, AirPod Maxes ) to airplane screens, so you can watch your favorite comfort movie or episode of Sex and the City without worrying about bringing a corded pair or needing to purchase those cheap plane headphones in the air.

Saatva Weighted Silk Eye Mask

Like a weighted blanket for your eyes, this eye mask is sleep enhancing (perfect for long flights and jumping through timezones) and made from super soft silk.

Tumi Just In Case Tote

Chances you’ll come back from vacation with more clothes than you went there with are high, so consider packing this foldable nylon tote to hold all your overstock.

Mejuri Travel Case

Travel with ease knowing that your necklaces won’t get tangled and all your earrings are safe and sound in one place.

Daily Pill Organizer

This pill case also came from our TikTok FYP and is small enough to fit in any purse, but has enough storage to hold all your medicine, vitamins, and supplements.

plus size travel must haves

By  Diandra Oliver (words) and Kaila Walton (photos)

The visibility of fat and plus size identifying hikers and backpackers is growing in outdoor communities. Organizations like Unlikely Hikers and Climb Big advocate for the inclusion of fat and plus size people in outdoors activities, while reminding us that people with diverse bodies are already outside, moving their bodies in ways that bring them joy.

When fat and plus size hikers head out into the backcountry, finding the best-fitting, lightweight gear for our adventures can be a challenge. Being fat means your backpack’s weight is automatically higher: plus size clothes and gear have more fabric and fat bodies burn more calories, which means more food in your pack per day. Focusing on an “ultralight” or “lightweight” carrying weight (12 to 28 pounds) may help you carry the least weight possible for the trip you’re on.

Here are some of our favourite fat-friendly lightweight backpacking gear items!

plus size travel must haves

Size yourself for a backpack at home by measuring your torso length and your hip width (instructions here ). The torso measurement tells you if the pack will fit on your back; the hip width will ensure the hip strap is big enough.

A lightweight option is the Arc’teryx Alpha AR 55 . This pack weighs three pounds and has a roomy waistband, compressed hip padding and adjustable chest straps. The bag has enough room for gear for a multi-day trip and a narrower fit on the back for a broader range of motion for scrambling.

The comfortable Osprey Aether 60  weighs just over five pounds. If you have day hikes planned on your trip, a smaller, removable pack is a bonus, but it can also be left at home to shed weight.

In Spring 2021, look for packs designed for plus size people including the Granite Gear Perimeter Series offering 35- and 50-litre options and a new 20-piece collection from Gregory’s  ‘Gateway Program.’

Sleeping Bags

plus size travel must haves

Finding a plus-size friendly sleeping bag can be a fat backpacker’s worst nightmare, but we’ve found a few lightweight bags that have lots of room.

Marmot recently released the Women’s Trestles  Elite Eco 20° Sleeping Bag Plus . It’s a synthetic bag that weighs three pounds and has a 73-inch shoulder girth, meaning it would max out at size 3XL. Sea to Summit also makes the Explore Down Sleeping Bag 25F . This down bag weighs approximately 2.5 pounds and has a shoulder girth of 76 inches, maxing out at a 4XL.

For plus-size people who like to winter camp, The North Face makes the Inferno 0F. This fluffy bag weighs just under two pounds and has a shoulder girth of 62 inches, making the maximum size a 2XL.

Finally, many backpackers opt for blankets and we like the NEMO Equipment Puffin Blanket 1P . This blanket weighs just over two pounds and boasts a wide footprint (57 inches x 85 inches), curved edges and a proprietary foot nook to keep your feet warm on cold nights.

Sleeping Pads

plus size travel must haves

There’s nothing worse than popping off a regular-sized sleeping pad after a long day of hiking in the backcountry. Luckily, lightweight, wide sleeping pads are generally available and come at a variety of accessible price points.

We like the Klymit Static V Luxe  because it is 30 inches wide and weighs approximately 1.5 pounds, making it a lightweight luxury in the backcountry. Big Agnes makes the Insulate AXL Air , which is 25 inches wide and weighs just over a pound.

For even roomier sleeps, Exped makes the Airmat HL Duo M . It weighs 1.5 pounds and is 41 inches wide at the shoulders.

Most ultralight one-person tents have narrow footprints, but fat and plus-size backpackers require tents with a wider base.

The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1 is 38 inches wide at the shoulders and weighs just over two pounds. The Zpacks Duplex is 45 inches wide at the shoulders and weighs just over one pound. The pole-less Durston X-Mid 2P is 50 inches wide at the shoulders and weighs 2.5 pounds.

Fat backpackers we know often opt for a hammock, since many can hold up to 400 pounds. Favourites include the Wilderness Technology Double Hammock and the ENO DoubleNest Hammock .

Backpacking is one of the best ways to get outside, but running into other fat and plus-size hikers while on a multi-day trip is still rare. As more of us head out on long trails, our fat and plus-size backcountry community will grow, and hopefully more lightweight gear options will follow.

Jumper cables

A set of jumper cables is essential to have in your car at all times, whether you're driving 2 miles down the road or 200 miles away from home. The Energizer Jumper Cables are especially well rated. Available for less than $20 on Amazon, the 12-foot-long cables are perfect for any car type and come with a travel bag for easy storage. Longer cables are also available.

Portable tire inflator

A portable tire inflator can be a lifesaver if you find your tires have a slow leak during your trip. The AstroAl Air Compressor Tire Inflator is compact, so it won't take up much space among the other gear in your trunk, and it includes an LED flashlight with independent switch control. Road trip essentials for kids

In addition to snacks, headphones, reusable water bottles, sunglasses and – depending whether your kids are in a car seat or not – travel pillows, the following items are essential to a successful road trip with kids.

Seatback organizer

A car seatback organizer lets you arrange road trip essentials on the back of the driver's or passenger's seat, where they're within reach of small hands. Many buyers said this seatback organizer from Amazon took some of the stress out of traveling with kids, thanks to its multipurpose storage compartments, including a place for a tablet and plenty of other spots to store key items for your trip.

Travel tray

LUSSO Gear Kids Travel Tray against white background.

Courtesy of LUSSO Gear

If your co-pilot is constantly turning around to pick up toys or pass out snacks, a backseat travel tray is in order. The LUSSO Gear Kids Travel Tray comes with a safety strap that can be secured to any car seat, and includes a dry-erase board table, a cup holder, a storage compartment for toys and a no-drop tablet viewing stand. Reviewers loved the tray's whiteboard area and said it was a great way to keep kids entertained on long car rides.

Window shade

Protect your backseat drivers from UVA and UVB rays with some window shades. Many parents like the shades by Enovoe , which come in a two- or four-pack.

Bag of small toys and activities

Load up on small toys you can surprise your kids with throughout the journey. Wikki Stix , Melissa & Doug Water Wow pads and sticker books are all good, low-cost activities, and you can find other cheap options at your local dollar and thrift stores. You might even add some candy to the mix, especially for that last leg of the trip.

Most parents want to keep screen time to a minimum, but all bets are off when it comes to travel. Consider a tablet like the Amazon Fire Kids , which comes with a protective case and one year of Amazon Kids+. Amazon Kids+ features thousands of ad-free books, games and apps; for any streaming services you have at home, you can download TV show episodes and movies so the kids don't need Wi-Fi to watch them.

Small blanket

Bring a small blanket and/or other comfort item from home to ensure the kids are cozy and content in the backseat. You could also bring a Cubcoat , which is a two-in-one stuffed animal that transforms into a hoodie. Your child's furry friend (think bunnies, sloths and puppies) doubles as a soft, zip-up sweatshirt, and you get to save some space in your suitcase.

Kids travel journal

A kids travel journal makes it easy for your child to document their road trip and all the fun things they see and do. Plus, many kids journals feature world maps, puzzles, fun facts and more activities to keep boredom at bay.

Road trip tips

Plan your stops.

It can be helpful and fun to plan your road trip stops ahead of time. Break up the trip with stops at a pretty park, a quirky roadside attraction or a top-rated restaurant.

Debit cards and Venmo may be the way of the world nowadays, but you may still run into a few places on your journey that are cash-only. Be on the safe side by keeping some spare cash on hand.

Download a fuel savings app

You can save some money on fuel by using apps like GasBuddy , which will show you the cheapest gas prices in your area. Go the extra mile by signing up for a gas rewards credit card to get the most bang for your buck.

Amazon Travel Must Haves

Amazon Travel Must Haves

From being a full-time travel blogger, I am on the go A LOT! And I know from experience what things will make your life easier when traveling.

I’ve put together this list of the best Amazon travel must-haves for your next vacation that will make keep you organized while traveling.

If you’re in a hurry, I’ve linked everything in this list on my Amazon Travel Essentials Storefront page.

Plus I have a helpful video on my Amazon travel essentials where I show my favorite products in action.

Now let’s get into the list. Sorted by category. This post contains affiliate links.

1. LED Travel Mirror

Amazon travel must have

This LED portable travel mirror has changed the game when it comes to getting ready when traveling, and why it’s one of my favorite Amazon travel essentials.

Ever have a horribly lit hotel bathroom mirror, or have mirrors in odd places making getting ready for the day challenging? I’ve been in that situation many times.

With your own travel mirror that has different light settings, you can get ready in perfect lighting every time anywhere in a hotel room.

This mirror is dimmable, lightweight has a great charge life (lasts the longest on the dimmest setting), and is about the size of an iPad.

I bought this for travel, but have been using it every day to get ready making it a great value for the money!

2. Toiletry Case

amazon travel toiletry bag

When it comes to toiletry cases, I’m a little picky about functionality. I travel a lot, and I know what works. And I’ve found this great toiletry case that checks marks all the boxes.

This toiletry case has one large compartment so you can find and use all your essentials easily (I dislike too many zipper compartments).

Plus there is a hook for hanging, and there are a few smaller mesh compartments great for little items like pill boxes, contacts, small toothpaste, and sample toiletry products that you can see easily.

The case is on the medium/large side and works great for longer trips, or if you like to bring larger full-size items. It will fit in a carry-on, but I personally use this when I check a bag.

Plus, on the back of this toiletry case, there is a jewelry organizer! If this is not yet on your list, definitely add it in as an Amazon travel must-have!

3. Makeup Bag

amazon makeup travel bag

I recently picked up this makeup bag from Amazon, and it’s one of my new favorite travel must-haves, and it’s under $10!

Again, I travel a lot and I prefer bags and cases with the least amount of unnecessary zippers. This soft makeup bag fits all of the makeup products I use for travel including a medium size eyeshadow palette.

Because of the soft exterior, if you don’t fill this bag up completely it will fit nicely in your suitcase around other items, rather than a hard case bag.

Plus, the other side of this makeup bag has a brush compartment to keep things organized!

4. Clear Cases

""</p

This set of clear cases (comes in a 2 or 3-pack) just come in handy for keeping organized while traveling. You can easily see what’s inside which helps for finding things quickly on the go.

There are so many uses for clear cases. You can use clear cases not only for toiletries, but you can also use them for accessories, makeup, medicine, toys, and small electronics.

Plus you can also use these when you are in your destination to keep small things in place in a tote bag.

5. Travel Toiletry Containers

travel toiletry containers

These 3oz silicone toiletry containers are perfect if you like to bring your own shampoo, body wash, face wash, etc. I love these containers specifically because of the wide opening for a mess-free transfer. Plus the silicone is squishy and the caps are sturdy and leak-free,  so squeezing out your products is a breeze! Definitely, one of my go-to Amazon travel must-haves!

6. Silicone Brush Holder

silicone travel makeup brush container

Have makeup brushes and don’t know how to take them with you? This portable silicone brush holder has a thin opening so that it is easy to insert your brushes, but still narrow enough to keep all the brushes stored securely and prevent the brushes from falling out.

It’s not the best for large face brushes but works great for those small eyeshadow brushes and pencils that are hard to find in your makeup bag. It fits around 12 skinny-sized brushes and pencils.

Plus it comes in 16 aesthetic colors.

Tip: Buy two and keep your eye brushes separated from your small pencils.

7. Silicone Beauty Blender Holder

""</p

I never knew what to do with my wet beauty blender after using it on vacation, but there’s always a solution on Amazon it seems.

This makeup sponge holder allows for it to breathe and dry in between uses. The silicone material is also really easy to clean and wipe clean. Plus it comes with a small makeup sponge.

Another great benefit is that after you use it and store it before cleaning it won’t get your makeup bag all dirty. They also come in some really cute aesthetic colors.

8. Dopp Kit

Can’t forget about the guys- this dopp kit is designed for easy accessibility with one large open zipper compartment that keeps bottles upright, a waterproof compartment, and water-resistant material for the perfect toiletry bag.

9. Carry-On Lightweight Luggage

On the hunt for your next favorite 4-wheeler travel carry-on that’s lightweight. This Travel Pro Maxlite is a must for travel.

This suitcase is extremely lightweight, which comes in handy if your airline weighs your suitcase (most common in Europe) or if you won’t want a heavy bag to lift up in the airplane overhead bins.

10. Carry-On Weekender Bag

amazon travel must have weekender bag

This carry-on weekend bag is perfect for a roomy personal item on an airplane. This bag fits easily underneath your seat and has plenty of function.

There are two compartments of this bag, one smaller section for your laptop and electronics, and another larger section for clothing, etc.

I love how this bag has a trolly sleeve so you can easily place it over your suitcase handles, and convenient exterior pockets for your cell phone, wallet, and boarding pass!

11. Travel Backpack

This best-selling travel backpack is perfect for a weekend trip on its own. Or this backpack can act as a personal item on an airplane with a convenient trolly sleeve that fits over your suitcase handles.

The functionality of this travel backpack checks all the boxes including a helpful chest buckle, breathable mesh fabric on the backside, comfortable straps, and waterproof material.

Inside there is one main large compartment, an extra padded laptop pocket, a shoe pocket, and a front snack cooler to keep things organized.

12. Medium Size Carry-On Purse

If you like traveling with a carry-on that fits in the airplane seat in front of you and use that same bag when traveling then this medium carry-on purse is perfect for you!

This travel purse called the Everywhere Bagg has plenty of convenient compartments which help you stay organized on travel days, and when you’re on the go! Plus a luggage sleeve so you can easily put this over your carry-on suitcase for a hands-free travel day.

13. Belt Bag

belt bag amazon travel must have

I love keeping all my essentials in one place, and having a belt bag that can be worn cross-body or around your waist is the perfect solution for keeping your passport, wallet, and other essentials within reach.

I particularly love this belt bag from Amazon (the ivory color is so pretty). It comes in many different colors and has one large interior with mesh compartments on the inside. The bag surprisingly fits a lot,  and it’s a close dupe of the Lululemon bag!

14. Cup Holder Caddy

""</p

Ever board a plane with too many things like a coffee, boarding pass, and purse, all the while struggling to scan your boarding pass with the gate agent? I’ve been in that situation MANY times, and this Amazon cup holder is perfect to keep my hands free throughout the airport.

This collapsable travel cup holder caddy attaches to your suitcase handles and can fit 2 cups so now you can be hands-free walking through the airport. Plus it packs down and doesn’t take up too much room in your suitcase.

18. Refillable Perfume Atomizers

""</p

Traveling with full-size perfumes is an easy way to add lots of weight to your bag. I LOVE these perfume/ cologne automizers because you can take your favorite perfume wherever you go, and they are smaller than what I imagined so they won’t take up space in your bag.

These are super easy to fill without any messes and they are leak free! This comes in a set of 4, so you can switch up your favorite scents or give an atomizer to another family member.

19. Travel Steamer

Never have to worry about a wrinkled outfit again with this travel steamer . Even though this steamer is on the small side, it really packs a punch with steaming and can get wrinkles out easily. Plus it packs nicely in your suitcase.

20. Hanging Jewelry Organizer

""</p

I’ve tried other jewelry organizers in the past that work fine as I am packing… but once I am in a destination staying organized is always a struggle as I don’t always put things neatly back after every wear.

This hanging jewelry organizer is perfect because you can see all your jewelry at once with 14 different-sized compartments.

And when you’re traveling you can simply put your jewelry back in its clear compartment without having to neatly place necklaces, and stud earrings in place. It’s perfect for us lazy girls.

Plus, this jewelry organizer is foldable and hangable great for packing and displaying in your destination.

21. Shoe Bags

amazon travel must haves

Let’s face it, our shoes are just dirty- especially when traveling and walking on all kinds of surfaces. That’s why I love packing my shoes in these top-rated shoe bags that separate my shoes from the rest of my belongings.

These shoe bags come in a set of 4 and are waterproof. Plus, they can be used beyond a shoe bag for even more organizing.

22. Packing Cubes

Packing Cubes

If you haven’t tried packing your suitcase with packing cubes , what are you waiting for?! The way you pack will not be the same.

I love keeping all my clothes organized in packing cubes, which helps me stay neat on the go. Usually, keep underwear & socks in one cube, and swimsuits, tops, and bottoms in the other cubes. I also find that you can pack more clothes this way.

I love this packing cube set (6 bags) from Amazon because the top part has a mesh detail so you can see inside the cubes without having to open them. Plus, this set has over 20,000 positive reviews.

23. Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter

plus size travel must haves

As you know, if you use AirPods or another Bluetooth headphone set, you won’t be able to connect to airplane TV screens because those TVs use older microphone jacks.

28. Noise Canceling Headphones

noise canceling headphones

Once you try noise-canceling headphones on an airplane, you will never travel without them! No more listening to unwanted conversations, babies crying, and loud airplane engines.

Now there are a few different kinds of noise-canceling headphones, over the ear or earbuds ranging in all price points.

I personally have the Jabra Elite 85H Headphones . This style is extremely comfortable around the ears with extra cushion, and the battery life is long. I’ve never had to recharge on a flight, even a long haul. But these are investment headphones at $250.

Budget-friendly option : Another best-selling headphone on Amazon is under $50 with over 47,000 positive reviews.

Amazon Kindle

The Amazon Kindle is a must for anyone who likes to read on a vacation. I like how small the kindle is compared to bringing large hardcover books that take up way too much room and weight to your bag.

I’ve brought heavy large hardcover books on vacation- and sometimes I don’t even have time to read, so now that I finally have a kindle, it won’t matter as much if I don’t have a chance to read my book because it’s so lightweight.

30. Travel Umbrella

32. Water Shoes

These are my go-to white sneakers that I wear on travel days and throughout the destination. I love how they are sustainable white faux leather that looks cute with travel outfits and is comfortable to wear all day long.

Amazon travel essentials

Another Amazon travel must-have is Liquid IV electrolyte drink mix (mix with one bottle of water). I always have a few packs in my carry-on for when I need extra hydration, especially on a long flight.

Plus these are great hangover remedies when you go too hard with one too many margaritas. My favorite flavor is passion fruit !

12 Summer Must-Haves, According To Bloomingdale’s Fashion Director

While we may still be a few weeks away from the summer solstice and the official arrival of the warm-weather season, the serotonin-boosting temperatures outside are getting us in the mood to start shopping early (particularly with all the Memorial Day sales coming up). Whether you have a wedding (or two!), a camping trip, or a beach vacation on the summer 2024 roster, this season’s biggest trends have something for everyone. To help sort through the seemingly limitless offerings, we caught up with  Marissa Galante Frank , fashion director of beauty and accessories at Bloomingdale’s. From summer wardrobe essentials , like sandals and oversized sunglasses , to this season’s occasionwear styles, including novelty clutches and linen dresses , and camping must-haves , like beaded jewelry and crochet, ahead, the ultimate summer shopping wishlist .

Beaded jewelry

“Beaded, colorful jewelry is easy to mix into your everyday jewelry and help transition your look from spring to summer.”

Baseball hat

“Baseball hats are both fashionable and functional, protecting you from the sun while adding a fun and playful POV to your outfit. Clare V’s accessories and ready-to-wear often don whimsical sayings or phrases, and this ‘Ciao’ hat is one that I’ll be wearing all summer.”

“Nothing is more essential than SPF. [The brand] Vacation’s SPF smells amazing, provides water-resistant protection, and makes me want to never leave the beach!”

Striped accessories

“A canvas tote is a necessity in the summer. It is durable, packable, and can hold all of your essentials. I am stripe-obsessed, so I love this tote .”

Oversized shield sunglasses

“I love an oversized shield sunglass for summer because it feels inherently casual and has an edge.”

Coastal clutch

“I am a Pisces so I have always loved a fish motif. Novelty clutches are super fun for the summer and easy to throw in your suitcase for a weekend getaway. These styles are easy to dress up or down depending on your social calendar.”

Naked sandals

“Barely-there sandals are a styling dream. They can work back to truly any summer look! Bonus: These jelly Ancient Greek Sandals are water-friendly!”

Crochet knits

“I borrowed this sweater from my best friend for vacation and I immediately ended up buying it for myself. It is the perfect sweater to bring for a boat day, throw on at dinner when the temperature drops, or wear over your bikini. Crochet is a huge trend for summer and this is a sweater you will reach for almost every day.”

Raffia tote

“The leather trim, braided handles, and structure of this tote makes it the perfect multi-purpose option for the summer. It can be worn from the office to the plane to the pool party.”

Summer scent

“The summer calls for a fragrance that transports you to the beach — even if you are working in your air-conditioned office. This fragrance from House of Bo combines hints of magnolia and banana with silky marine notes.”

Linen & stripes

“This dress combines two of my favorite things: linen and stripes. There is a hint of nautical but the silhouette makes the dress feel feminine and fresh for the season.”

Mixed-media dresses

“Knit and woven mixed dresses are incredibly comfortable and versatile.”
