9 Best Canal Boat Tours In Amsterdam & Your Questions Answered! [2024]

Amsterdam has many canal cruises, but which is best for you? Which one is the most worth taking? No one tour caters to all. I’ve taken some of the best canal tours and will share how to pick the best one for yourself, professional tips, and answer all your questions.

Table of Contents

Which Canal Tours to Take?

This post provides detailed information to help you choose the best canal trip. Click here if you wish to see the best boat tours in Amsterdam right away .

Most Asked Questions When Booking A Canal Tour

You might have some questions about Amsterdam canal tours; I have listed them here.

Is It Worth Doing A Canal Cruise In Amsterdam?

Yes, especially if you visit Amsterdam for the first time.

Taking the canal tours allows you to see the historical and beautiful canal houses, understand Amsterdam’s history, and experience the Dutch vibe on a boat.

You might hear some people saying it is not worth it, but they probably didn’t pick the most suitable tour for themselves and didn’t join a good rating tour. That is why I have this post, so you have the best canal tour experience.

Is It Necessary To Book The Tickets In Advance?

Yes, especially if you take small boat tours or evening dinner cruises . Why?

You won’t find ticket offices selling small boat tours; most only sell big ones. That is why you need to book in advance. In addition, the tours I recommended in this post are top-rated, so be sure to book them in advance.

For dinner cruises, there’s only one boat per evening. Spots are limited!

Do Amsterdam Canal Boats Have Bathrooms?

There’s a toilet on board for big boats, but I advise you to use the bathroom before taking the tour. (You can find the public toilets in Amsterdam here)

For small boats, unfortunately, no restrooms!

How Long Is Amsterdam Canal Ride?

In general, it takes around 60 to 90 minutes. Some tours, like dinner and evening cruises, can take about 3 hours.

Where Do Canal Cruises Leave From In Amsterdam?

There are three places: Damrak, close to Amsterdam Central Station; Near Anne Frank House, and Rijksmuseum.

Most tours depart from Damrak, but I recommend boat tours from Anne Frank House and canal tours from Rijksmuseum since it’s less busy, and you can rest more on the boat after visiting the nearby attractions.

Is the Amsterdam Canal Cruise Better At Night Or Day?

It depends on personal preference.

A day cruise offers better visibility, and the natural light during the day provides excellent lighting conditions for capturing the city’s beauty.

An evening canal cruise offers a romantic and enchanting atmosphere, with the city lights illuminating the canals and landmarks. It is also a good option if you want to see the sunset views in Amsterdam. It’s more relaxing, too, since fewer people are on the street than in the daytime.

Taking A Big Boat or A Small Boat Cruise In Amsterdam?

It depends on what you prefer and what you like; here are the pros and cons of taking big and small boats:

Pros And Cons Of Taking A Big Boat Canal Trip

Some benefits:

  • More affordable as more guests are on board
  • Have multiple language audio guides for the guests, great for people who need more confidence in English.
  • Have semi-open boats, which means you won’t get wet or need a raincoat when it rains. The captain closes the deck once it rains and opens it when it’s sunny.
  • The heating system is on in winter; there is no need to bring an extra coat to get on the boat.

Some disadvantages:

  • More than 80 people are on board, and the guests don’t get much interaction with the captain/guide
  • The trip is with an audio guide, not a live guide
  • The standard route might be a bit boring for some people

An excellent choice for people who see comfort as their first priority.

Pros And Cons Of Taking A Small Boat Cruise

some benefits:

  • More chances to interact with the guide as there are much fewer guests
  • Have a live guide on board
  • Some tours include drinks and snacks
  • Some tours might be canceled due to heavy rain; please check the details when reserving the spots. However, don’t worry about it from May to early September
  • Although some boats have a heating system and most provide blankets, it might still be cold for some guests.
  • It’s highly recommended to reserve before leaving for Amsterdam, as there are limited spots only.

A perfect option for people who like fun, interactive tours and want to have local experiences.

Best Canal Cruise Tours In Amsterdam

Here are the best canal cruises in Amsterdam; they are with high rating reviews, and I experienced some of them ourselves:

Cheapest 1-Hour Canal Tour In Amsterdam

Big boats are the cheapest option since more people are on the boat.

It costs EUR 18. Stromma and Lovers are the leading companies offering canal cruises in Amsterdam.

**Here is the special deal for my readers if you book with Tiqets, use the link below to get the lowest price. The link is already applied with the dicount code (CANALCRUISE10).**

Suppose you book the canal tickets together with Rijksmuseum or Heineken entrance tickets. In that case, you get the highest discount for the canal cruise!

Pro Tip When Getting On The Boat

Take the seat in the middle of the boat! It’s a bit noisy at the front since the captain is constantly on the intercom checking the traffic, and it’s smelly if you sit in the back.

Luxury And Environment-Friendly Canal Boat Tours

Friendly, knowledgeable staff made this comfortable canal cruise very enjoyable. I would recommend this tour. Irmgard_C ( read more reviews )

If you prefer a luxury boat with a maximum of 30 guests, this tour is for you.

You can sit comfortably with the cushion by taking this electric, gas-free boat. In addition, there’s a live guide introducing the landmarks in Amsterdam, so you can ask any questions you have!

A big boat trip costs EUR 18, but this tour with a much smaller group only costs EUR 22. It comes with great value and good ratings; no wonder it sells out quickly.

My Experience With This Tour

I took this tour in late November, and I loved it!

Most canal tours come with an audio guide, but this tour has a live guide, which makes it much more enjoyable for a tourist. In addition, it’s with an electric boat, so there is no lousy air, and there are only around 15 guests on that day, so the quality is excellent.

The guide was funny and interestingly shared the old Amsterdam story. If you like interaction with the guide, there’s no problem. I sat next to the guide, so I asked him many questions.

If you decide to join this tour, book the tickets in advance as it is popular. In addition, be sure to get on the boat 10 minutes before departure to get a good spot.

Their boat departs from Central Station, Anne Frank House, and Rijksmuseum!

Fun And No Smoking Canal Tours With Food And Drinks

Can’t say enough how I recommend this tour! James did an awesome job in giving us a tour, with just enough historical information that didn’t make it boring. The food was light but tasty. Dr inks were plenty. A.must do activity! Annette_T ( Check the more reviews )

This is the best canal tour I’ve joined. It has a high rating from past guests as well.

You get to interact highly with the tour guide and ask any questions you have during the cruise. Most important of all, you get on a non-smoking electric boat!

I don’t like smoking and even hate the smell of it; this tour does not allow guests to smoke, while some other small boats only prohibit it if the guests mind.

Their boat departs from Central Station and Rijksmuseum!

Smoking allowed Canal Boat trip With Drinks

Very funny and informative boat ride; not only could you smoke/drink on the boat, but our guide, Anthony and Graham, were amazing. Anthony was a hilarious host and even rolled a customers joint for them! Which I thought was pretty good customer service; the boat itself is stocked up with drinks, and it’s electric, so you can charge your phone, etc, while on tour. Would 100% recommend it as an eccentric alternative to a regular canal cruise! Morad_A ( read more reviews )

Want to take small boats in Amsterdam but also plan to smoke and have drinks? You need a smoke-friendly boat tour !

This tour is more than just a smoke-free boat trip; the tour guides ensure you have a fun ride and see plenty of Amsterdam in a chill way!

Since it is a top-rated tour, be sure to book the tickets in advance in case it is fully booked.

Usual Boat Trip: Pedal Boat

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

If you already experienced the canal cruise or want a different experience in Amsterdam, the pedal boat is for you.

Most tours come with a captain navigating the boat; this time, you can pedal the boat yourself.

You can design your own route and explore Amsterdam at your own pace. In addition, while most small tours do not allow bringing your own food, you can do that if you rent the pedal boat!

The best part is that one pedal boat can have a maximum of 4 people; it’s also an excellent choice for small groups and families!

There are two locations for the boat: Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein.

Hop-on And Hop-Off Canal Boat Ride

Amsterdam is a canal city; it is perfect to experience it by taking the hop-on and hop-off boat service.

It is ideal for people who want to enjoy a different type of transportation in Amsterdam. There are 8 stops in Amsterdam city center, so you can easily access the attractions by boat!

After Covid, only one company offers unlimited hop-on and hop-off boat service.

You can also buy a combination ticket to enjoy the Amsterdam street view by taking their sightseeing bus!

Private Canal Tours With A Tour Guide: For Small-Groups And Families

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

If you travel as a family or with friends, joining a private tour with a guide, who is also your captain, is a great idea.

Why not navigate the private boat yourself? There are many private and tourist boats in Amsterdam canals; you need quite some skills or talent if you are new. Besides, with a local guide, you can fully immerse yourself in Amsterdam and enjoy the beautiful canal view like a local.

Remember to bring your own food and drinks as they are not included in the tour!

Evening Dinner Canal Cruise

After a long day traveling in Amsterdam, you should have some good food and quality time to have a perfect ending to the day! That’s why the Evening Dinner Cruise is popular!

This 2-hour tour lets you enjoy a fantastic canal evening view and symbolic buildings in Amsterdam while savoring the local three-course menu dinner.

I joined this tour with some colleagues a few years ago, the atmosphere was cozy, and it was an evening I will never forget.

Luxury Dinner Cruise

If you wish for more privacy and a quiet evening dinner, join this 3-hour long three-course dinner tour with a maximum of 16 guests only . Most importantly, a private table is guaranteed!

Romantic Private Canal Cruise For Couples

Amazing! Relaxing and informative! The tour guide was patient, knew everything about the area, and included complimentary drinks and blankets. Absolutely wonderful would definitely recommend it. Jason_G ( Read more reviews )

Want to have an unforgettable canal tour with your loved one?

This private tour is only for you and your partner, no other guests onboard. Besides, the guide can customize this 90-minute route based on your preference, giving you a special and unique canal cruise experience.

This tour is very popular from April to October; if the evening private tour is not available, try their day tour!

In Conclusion: Which Canal Tour is The Best?

Many options exist, but I like Captain Jack Canal Cruises after taking big and small boat tours.

If you prefer to take tours without drinks, join the Flagship luxury boat tour , which has a high value in terms of price!

If you wish to have a dinner canal cruise, this tour offers a great experience . This private table dinner canal tour is perfect if you want more privacy.

Want a romantic evening with your loved one? Book this romantic private tour with a customized canal route!

Want to explore Amsterdam in an unusual way? Pedal Boat is for you!

Pulitzer, Amsterdam hotel review: Luxury, local cuisine and decadence in this Dutch period piece

Set within 25 restored golden age houses, this elegant hotel is a fusion of 17th century features and contemporary design, says daisy lester, article bookmarked.

Amsterdam attracts visitors from all around the world thanks to its rich history, eclectic museums, bike lifestyle and coffee shop culture. The city is wonderfully walkable and the five-star Pulitzer hotel places you in prime location to explore all the Dutch capital has to offer. Looming over the canal belt and in the heart of the historic Nine Streets neighborhood (right out of a Wes Anderson movie), this quintessential district is brimming with boutique shops, charming cafes and enticing restaurants.

Located five minutes down the canal, you’ll find Anne Frank’s house while the Museumplein (home to Rijksmuseum, the Van Gough museum and Moco), Amsterdam Centraal and Vondelpark are a mere 20 minute walk away. If you’re keen to cycle like a local, the hotel is equipped with Pulitzer bikes and the erudite concierge Ron Stoevelaar is on hand to show you the best routes.

Set within 25 Golden Age canal houses, the Pulitzer forms an entire block in the Nine Streets area. Founded in 1970 by Peter Pulitzer (grandson of the Pulitzer Prize founder Joseph Pulitzer), the hotel went through a full refurbishment in 2016. The hotel combines 17th century Dutch elements and mid-century design (think beamed ceilings, historic fireplaces, period antiques and an impressive collection of art, books and music) with contemporary features. Every nook (and there’s many) of the hotel offers a glance into the past – whether it’s in the library of Pulitzer Prize winning books, the lobby with Persian rugs and paintings or in the four luxury collectors suites.

Exemplifying the old meeting the new, look out for what appears to be a 17th century painting of a floral bouquet in the lobby. A closer look will reveal it to be a photograph of melted cutlery by a contemporary artist.

  • The best holidays to book for November, from winter sun in Oman to Scandi Christmas markets
  • Best hotels in Europe 2023: Where to stay for a city, beach or retreat break

Oozing elegance and class, the Pulitzer’s architectually impressive buildings are enriched with antique pieces and Dutch design details. A beguiling space, the grand lobby has a buzzy atmosphere thanks to the laid-back Pulitzer Garden bar and eatery that are tucked away toward the back, while the check-in and concierge desks are warm and welcoming.

Upon arrival, you’ll spy an eclectic clientele of 30-somethings talking over old fashioned cocktails at the bar, upmarket travellers in the mid-century armchairs, older couples chatting to the concierge and families feasting in the lobby’s Italian-inspired restaurant. Stepping out of the Pulitzer doors and onto the canal side, picturesque Amsterdam – without the chaos of the main streets – is on your doorstep (just try not to collide with any of the bikes swishing past).

Bed and bath

Despite being home to more than 200 rooms, the hotel has a cosy, boutique feel owing to the canal house layout and warren of mood-lit interlocking corridors (there’s much enjoyment to be had in getting lost in the Pulitzer). Each room is unique and inspired by an aspect of Dutch design. With themed-collectors suites, family size spaces and canal-view rooms – as well as generous, cosy and classic spaces available – there’s a room to suit every kind of traveller.

Featuring decadent marble bathrooms (complete with luxury Debaser toiletries and well-pressured power showers), the rooms boast custom made headboards, a work desk with a mirror, mid-century drinks trolleys and chaise lounges. Thoughtful details such as bookshelves, a bike repair kit, an umbrella, French press and Dutch sweet treats all elevate the space, while windows either look out over the canal, the street below or the Pulitzer garden in the centre of the hotel. You can opt in or out of having your sheets changed each morning – the hotel reminds you of the importance of saving water – by placing a card on your bed.

Food and drink

There are two restaurants on site at the Pulitzer: the all-day dining eatery Jansz and the more laidback Pulitzer Garden restaurant. The former favours locally-sourced ingredients and classic Dutch cuisine, with the lunch and dinner line-up brimming with seasonal small plates, freshly caught fish dishes (the shrimp croquettes and octopus were a delight) and refined classics like burgers and steaks. Jansz is also where breakfast is served, with guests able to order a la carte (the omelette is a must) or try the continental buffet.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Pulitzer Garden has indoor and outdoor tables with a hearty menu inspired by Italian cuisine – think aubergine parmigiana, lobster spaghetti and chicken caesar salad. After dinner, be sure to head to the glamorous and deliciously moody Pulitzer Bar. Sink into the armchairs, sofas and bar stools to while away the evening with signature or classic cocktails (try the breakfast margarita and new Amsterdam).

Public areas

The neighbourhood-style complex includes the Jansz restaurant, Pulitzer Garden bar, restaurant and garden seating, the Pulitzer Bar and the resplendent lobby. Whether you’re a guest or not, the Pulitzer bar is a must-visit. Elegant and free from the havoc of city centre bars, the Art Deco-style bar looks over the canal and is the perfect spot for people watching. Open to guests, there’s also a 24-hour gym at the Pulitzer with machines, yoga mats, weights, towels and chilled water.

When visiting the Pulitzer, you’ll notice two gleaming boats docked in front of the hotel. The Tourist (which famously took Winston Churchill on a trip through the city in 1946) and the smaller Belle are available for private and group tours for guests and the public at an extra cost. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the interiors are complete with polished teak and brass, luxurious carpeting, marble, leather and original bevelled glass. Lasting 90 minutes, the concierge’s guided cruises take you on a whistlestop tour of the city’s canals – and there’s a self-service mini bar for on-board drinks.

Nuts and bolts

Room count: 225

Freebies: Breakfast at Jansz restaurant (if included in your booking); gym access; Pulitzer tote bag; Pulitzer card deck; welcome stroopwafels; coffee or tea in the room.

Wifi: Free.

Extra charges: Room service; additional beds for children; pets.

Disability access: There are fully fitted accessible guest rooms available to reserve.

Pet policy : A small dog or cat is allowed in rooms at a cost of €50 per day.

Bottom line

Best thing : Impeccable service, prime location for exploring the city, excellent restaurants and an intimate bar.

Worst thing : Some might not get on with the thin doors and walls in the bedroom (it is an old building after all), meaning you can occasionally hear movement in the corridor. Plus, we would have liked to see slightly more reasonable prices in the otherwise more laidback Pulitzer Garden restaurant.

Perfect for: Upmarket travellers, foodies, couples and families.

Not right for: Those after a budget city break.

Instagram from: The moody Pulitzer bar, canal-view room, The Tourist boat tour or Jansz window tables.

Room rate : Double rooms from £351 a night.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Pulitzer Amsterdam

Consisting of 25 interlinking 17th- and 18th-century canal houses, Pulitzer Amsterdam offers a unique mix of Dutch history and modern craftsmanship.

In 1960, Peter Pulitzer (grandson of Joseph Pulitzer, founder of the Pulitzer Prize) bought 12 houses in the center of historic Amsterdam, along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals, and connected them to create this luxurious labyrinth.

Following a massive renovation in 2016, the Amsterdam hotel now has 225 plush accommodations divided among 25 canal houses as well as a two-story gym, serene inner gardens, a flower shop and a library showcasing what else but Pulitzer Prize-winning books.

Centrally located in the popular Nine Streets district and on the doorstep of the historic Jordaan neighborhood, the hotel is close to many trendy boutiques and local landmarks, such as the Royal Palace and the Anne Frank Museum.

  • The Amsterdam hotel has managed to flawlessly combine traditional and historic features with contemporary design, giving the property an eclectic yet elegant feel. A perfect example of this signature style can be found in the quirky lobby, where you can admire vintage Persian rugs alongside modern art.
  • At the center of the Pulitzer, you will find the inner gardens — a green oasis in the middle of Amsterdam. This peaceful hideaway is where to go when you want to relax after a long day of sightseeing in the busy city.
  • Stay in one of the exceptional Collector’s Suites. Inspired by four distinct characters (an art devotee, an eccentric book lover, a composer and an antique collector), these unique accommodations have stunning design features, such as a floor-to-ceiling archway of books (Book Collector’s Suite) and a wall of trumpets (Music Collector’s Suite).
  • Take a tour on the Pulitzer’s own canal boat, The Tourist. This restored salon boat from 1909 departs every afternoon from the hotel’s private dock, or you can book a private cruise complete with a floating picnic.
  • The property’s exceptional concierge team can do more than just recommend a good restaurant. Book a tour with one of these knowledgeable guides to see Amsterdam through the eyes of a local.
  • All accommodations in this labyrinthine hotel are one of a kind, which means that not all rooms are the same size, nor do they have the same views. You might enjoy tranquil courtyard vistas or a picturesque vista of the bustling canal.
  • Since the historic hotel consists of 25 interlinking canal houses, navigating its hallways can be a bit challenging. It can sometimes feel like a maze, with different ceiling heights and small sets of stairs everywhere.
  • If you want to book a room mid-August, be quick. Around this time, the popular Prinsengrachtconcert is held, which means rooms tend to go fast.
  • All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, a vintage telephone, Le Labo amenities, a custom-made minibar with cocktail-mixing facilities and a bike repair set as an homage to Dutch culture.
  • For ultimate privacy and luxury, book one of the Collector’s Suites — each has its own private entrance and stunning views of the canals.
  • Romantics will want to stay in the Pulitzer Suite. This luxurious spot is a tribute to the best love stories and features a freestanding bathtub and a Super King bed.
  • Enjoy drinks, breakfast and light dishes throughout the day at Pause. This café features lovely views of the calm gardens and a terrace.
  • Named for a 17th-century craftsman and former resident of one of the canal houses, Jansz is the luxury hotel’s elegant signature restaurant that serves modern classics with an international flair.
  • Step back in time with a visit to the art-deco-style Pulitzer’s Bar. The space exudes sophistication thanks to its sumptuous décor, suspender-clad bartenders and classic cocktails with a contemporary twist.

At an Amsterdam Hotel, Canals and Character

The Pulitzer Amsterdam celebrates its past but has a flair for modern touches. Don’t miss the bar — or the boat tour.

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

By Alyson Krueger

From 295 euros a night (about $362)

This 225-room hotel is comprised of 25 connecting canal houses built by wealthy merchants and aristocrats 400 years ago during the Dutch Golden Age. The five-star hotel was originally owned by Peter Pulitzer, whose grandfather Joseph established the Pulitzer Prizes. It had a head-to-toe refurbishment in 2016 and is now a social hot spot. The public spaces — the bar, the courtyard garden, the restaurant — are full of good-looking locals and tourists. The hotel owners care deeply about its past, and there are reminders of it everywhere. The venues are named after historical characters, and signs in guest rooms tell you who lived there throughout the centuries.

The Pulitzer Amsterdam is nestled between two of the city’s peaceful canals. My room overlooked a waterway and had a private balcony for watching the riverboats and bikers. Big tourist attractions like the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum are a few minutes away, and colorful signs by the elevator suggest nearby sites to visit. The hotel is in the Nine Streets, a neighborhood full of quirky shops, bars and cafes. You can buy anything from old violins to vintage clothes to bow ties just outside the hotel.

In the Pulitzer Amsterdam, no two rooms are the same. I stayed in an airy, modern room with floor-to-ceiling windows, pastel-colored furniture, and a chandelier. The room had so many amenities, I kept discovering more in drawers and closets throughout my stay. There was local coffee and tea, a sewing and shoe shining kit, branded stationery, even complimentary stroopwafels (the popular cookie). There wasn’t the one thing I really wanted: a full-length mirror. And I never received turndown service, which I expected at a five-star hotel.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was spacious and new (the countertops looked as if they had never been used). There was a deep bath tub and a rain shower with great pressure. The shampoo, conditioner and shower gel was made for the Pulitzer Amsterdam by upscale New York City perfumery Le Labo. I liked the products but would have liked them to be local.

The hotel has a two-story gym with up-to-date equipment, a library, an outdoor garden with four swings, even an in-house flower shop. The best amenity by far is the concierge team, which has extensive local knowledge. After check-in a concierge will walk you to your room and give you an overview of the hotel and recommendations about what you should do during your time in Amsterdam. I emailed the team when I was walking around the city with a question, and they responded within minutes.

The hotel has exclusive walking and canal boat tours for its guests. The latter takes place on a classic salon boat from 1909 — the captain said that Winston Churchill rode on it in 1946 — and it has polished teak and brass, marble, leather, even carpeting. It’s worth staying in the hotel just for this. The captain handed me a glass of wine and took me and the other guests on a lively and informative water tour of the city. He knew everything from where John Adams lived when he was an ambassador to the Netherlands to where Justin Bieber likes to party when he’s in town. It felt like a steal for 38 euros a person.

Jansz is an airy, elegant restaurant. The menu is eclectic and combines specialties from countries across Europe. For an extra charge (29.50 euros per person), hotel guests can have breakfast here. You get to choose a hot dish off the menu as well as help yourself to a buffet of fruits, cheeses and danishes. The soft music in the background and the abundance of light made it a cheerful and relaxing place to start the day. For dinner I sat at the hotel’s bar, The Pulitzer, which looks like it belongs in the 1930s with wood paneling, deep couches and tables tucked in secret corners. The attentive bartender made me a pineapple old-fashioned, a signature drink, and recommended snacks to order. I was surprised by how friendly the place was; I chatted with locals and other travelers and stayed out longer than I had anticipated.

The Bottom Line

The hotel is still in its early stages, and it will be interesting to see if it can keep up its allure. For now, though, it’s a bold place with character, great service, and fun and unexpected touches. Staying there exposed me to different sides of Amsterdam’s culture, history, charm and people than I would have otherwise seen.

A Weekend In… The Pulitzer

Amsterdam’s coolest canal house hotel.

Every room has its own personality at this unique stay, where food, art and a sense of fun are the order of the day

Search by destination, accommodation or landmark

Ages 0 to 17

Compared to Amsterdam itself, the Pulitzer is just a baby, born in 1970. But this hotel is firmly rooted in the city’s history, set within 25 knocked-through canal houses built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Established by Peter Pulitzer (grandson of the founder of the literary prize), this bucket-list hotel is an opulent, art-filled, eclectically furnished rabbit warren of over 200 guest rooms and suites, two restaurants, a bar—and a gem of a courtyard garden.

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

When the hotel was acquired by its current owners in 2015, creative director Jacu Strauss moved in, spending a night in every single room to immerse himself in the building’s history and make sure every room was as comfortable as it could be, even designing some of the furniture himself.

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

There are five Collector’s Suites, each of which are inspired by an imaginary inhabitant from history. But all rooms have thoughtful details like a Pulitzer umbrella, work desk, bike-repair set, and sweet treats on arrival. “The fun of becoming lost in the labyrinth of houses is part of the Pulitzer experience,” says hotel manager Caroline van Kessel. The rich color palettes throughout are taken from Vermeer, and add to the sense of a cozily glamorous secret hideaway.

Get to know me better

My neighborhood

Situated on the western side of the Canal Ring, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, this is the Amsterdam of picturesque waterways, gabled buildings, and cyclists whizzing by (rent your own bike from the hotel for €23 per day). The hotel borders bohemian Jordaan and is itself in the lovely, walkable Nine Streets neighborhood, where you’ll find dozens of restaurants and typical “brown cafés” (dark, atmospheric bars), plus plenty of boutiques and vintage stores. You’re within walking distance too of the Anne Frank house (now a museum), and the vast Rijksmuseum, home to some of the most famous paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and van Gogh.

My must-do activities

Sign up for a “concierge walking tour” each day at 10 a.m., while early birds can join a running tour on Thursdays at 7.30 a.m. The hotel has two canalboats that can be booked to see the city from its best angles. Pulitzer’s “Very Important Kids” program includes a treasure hunt, welcome treats and an outdoor play garden. Family Sundays at hotel restaurant Jansz offers a deal that works for parents too, with quick service, a fabulous children’s menu, and a supervised play area so you can linger over lunch for longer.

My vital statistics

Address: Prinsengracht 323, 1016 DZ Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Getting here: A taxi from Schiphol Airport takes around 25 minutes; alternatively, hop on one of the frequent trains from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal train station, which is a 10-minute taxi ride away.

My family-friendly features

There are three family rooms, a family suite, and more than 30 connecting rooms, with plenty of kids’ activities to keep them busy. Amsterdam generally is a safe, welcoming city and a good location for European family vacations.

While away a long lunch in Pulitzer Garden, where the largely Italian menu is echoed by olive trees and soundtracked by the bells of Westerkerk. At dusk, take a window seat in Pulitzer’s Bar with a warming Chestnut Old Fashioned, an amber-toned and richly scented cocktail that feels like fall in a glass and is the perfect way to start your evening.

pulitzer amsterdam canal tour

And for dinner, perch on a green velvet banquette in the pale blue paneled room at Jansz, for modern Dutch dishes: The Dutch oysters and North Sea crab toast are house specialties. “Toast with crab is an old Dutch classic,” says chef Jasper Schoon. “We gave it our own twist by adding local ingredients, and fennel and citrus make it fresh.” In spring and summer, transplant to Jansz’s courtyard garden where seven types of rosé are served.

Nine Streets, Amsterdam

Your neighborhood need-to-know

This is a buzzy, crowded, culturally rich part of town, with galleries on almost every corner, especially clustered around Hazeenstraat and Elandsstraat. There’s a lot to do in this neighborhood, but with canals for strolling and cafés for people-watching, it’s also a great place to do very little. Take your pick.
