Starr Man: Inside Ringo's 30-Year Odyssey with His All-Starr Band

PEOPLE gets backstage with the rock legend on his All-Starr Band's 30th anniversary tour

ringo starr tour manager

Ringo Starr does jumping jacks on the edge of the stage as he sings "Yellow Submarine" to an audience of one: me. It's the day before he's due to kick off the North American leg of his All-Starr Band's 30th-anniversary tour , and the group are rehearsing at the very un-rock 'n' roll hour of 10:30 a.m. Yesterday was the first time they'd played together since wrapping a string of Japanese dates three months earlier, but the 14th incarnation of the ever-evolving supergroup sounds as tight as ever. A handful of technicians and crew jog busily around the empty Colosseum Theater at Caesar's Palace in Windsor, Ontario. Tomorrow, every one of the 5,000 seats will be filled, but presently I'm the sum total of the crowd. I applaud as the song comes to an end, grateful for a socially acceptable way to vent my excitement. It's not every day you get a private show from a Beatle.

For the All-Starrs it's just another day at work — and boy do they love their jobs. To date, there have been 47 members of this joyous traveling show, which has spread the gospel of peace, love and boogie to untold millions around the globe since 1989. Past players include rock luminaries like Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Sheila E., Billy Squire, the Who's John Entwistle, Cream's Jack Bruce, Edgar Winter and Rod Argent. Today Starr is joined by Toto guitar great Steve Lukather, Santana/Journey singer-keyboardist Gregg Rolie, Men at Work guitarist Colin Hay, one-man funk machine Hamish Stewart of Average White Band, Kansas multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham, and Starr's enthusiastic sparring partner, drummer Gregg Bissonette. Their fun is infectious.

The band break for lunch, and Starr ushers me to his dressing room. Leaner and livelier than his 79 years should possibly allow, he's clad in the casual rock star uniform of jeans and t-shirt. However, an earring in the shape of a small silver sword reminds me that I'm speaking to the newly dubbed Sir Ringo, bonafide Knight of the Turntable . Ever the English gentleman, he insists I take the cushy chair of honor.

Complimenting a Beatle on his musical performance seems a bit like saying "Nice doodle!" to Rembrandt, but I offer my congratulations on a killer rehearsal. Amusingly, he admits to a slight case of nerves as opening night approaches. "There are always butterflies," he says. "We all know how to play. We all know how to do it, we've got to just get it down. Everybody on stage loves what they're doing. That helps. We haven't played together since April, so we're getting to know each other again onstage." The years of history certainly make it easier to reconnect. Lukather, Rolie, Bissonette and Ham have all been with the group since 2012, making their tenure nearly as long as the Fab Four's entire career. This time out, former All-Starr vets Stuart (2006–2008) and Hay (2003, 2008) are the new guys, subbing in for longtime members Todd Rundgren and Richard Page.

After the Canadian launch, the 30th-anniversary tour will bring the group from New York's Pier 17 to L.A.'s Greek Theater and nearly everywhere in between. One highlight is an open-air show at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the site of the original "Peace & Love" fest, Woodstock , on its 50th anniversary. Even more thrilling for Starr is a return trip to Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, which has hosted the country icons who first inspired him as a boy. "I sat in Liverpool listening to Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash when they were young guys. So to be on at the Ryman is perfect," he says with a note of wonderment. "You don't know where you're going in life, you know what I mean?" For a man who inspired multiple generations, it's touching to hear him speak of his own heroes. At age 19 he even tried to immigrate to America solely to be close to Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins. "The plan fell through because they gave us more forms to fill in, and as teenagers we did not want to fill in any more forms! But I could've been waiting for 'the boys' [the Beatles] to play Houston to go and see them. Strange, the path of life."

His health, happiness, and remarkable productivity was scarcely imaginable when he first hit the road as a solo act in 1989. The All-Starrs were born in the wake of substance abuse issues that had crippled his career in the late-'70s and most of the '80s. "I had a serious drinking problem," he told PEOPLE when the band prepared to embark on their first tour. "I didn't work or do anything. I wouldn't go out, because you'd have to be in the car for 40 minutes without a drink … It got progressively worse, and the blackouts got worse, and I didn't know where I'd been, what I'd done. I knew I had the problem for years. But it plays tricks with your head. Very cunning and baffling is alcohol."

Ultimately Starr and his wife, actress Barbara Bach , checked into the Sierra Tucson clinic in Arizona for treatment in the fall of 1988. Upon his release five weeks later, he grappled with the difficult question faced by the newly sober: how do you fill the void left by drinking? The decision to restructure his life around music was helped along by tour producer David Fishof, who conceived of a series of dates featuring the drummer with a little help from his famous friends. Eager to get to work, Starr immediately threw himself into the project. The first order of business was finding a band. "I thought I'd just call a few people I know," he explains. His sizable Rolodex included some serious heavy hitters. For the inaugural class of All-Starrs, he tapped Eagles guitarist (and future brother-in-law) Joe Walsh, New Orleans voodoo-rock king Dr. John, Rick Danko of the Band, one-time Beatles collaborator Billy Preston, and Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band pros Nils Lofgren and Clarence Clemons. To hold down the beat while he played the showman out front, Starr hired not just one but two drummers: session giant Jim Keltner, and the Band's Levon Helm. "I was like eight months without drugs or alcohol, that was about all, and we put it together," Starr reflects now.

The All-Starrs made their debut on July 23, 1989 at the Park Central Amphitheater in Dallas. Aside from the odd one-off performances — notably at the George Harrison-produced Concert for Bangladesh shows in 1971 , the Band's 1976 Last Waltz farewell show , and the time he sat in with the Beach Boys at their 4th of July concert in 1984 — he hadn't played live with any regularity since the Beatles finished their final tour in 1966 . "I was very nervous," he admits. "I ran on. I still run on! Three seconds before we go on, I always want to go to bed. But then I ran on, grabbed the mic and I was home. I love the memory of the first show. I was fearful for a while, but it started the atmosphere that I've kept going. We all support each other." More than one member of his entourage copped to tearing up as they watched the rehabilitated legend take his place behind his drum kit and bask in the adoration of the crowd. Starr was back where he belonged.

Despite the band's rotation of big names, egos have always been kept firmly in check within the All-Starr Band's circle. "He doesn't allow drama," says Starr's longtime drum tech Jeff Chonis, one of the few to have accompanied the group at every show they've ever played. "He sets the tone, and it's be respectful ." The group mocked any fears of excessive vainglory just a couple days into the first tour, when they played a memorable prank on Fishof. "Joe and Levon set up a fight in the dressing room," Starr chuckles. A faux-frantic Clemons was dispatched to tell the tour producer that a band mutiny was unfolding. Fishof arrived to find the pair waving knives and jagged bottles at one another. "[Fishof's] like, 'Guys, guys, stop!'" But the bottles were props made of sugar, like those found on the set of old Western movies. Everyone burst into laughter at the sight of the terrified producer. "They went mad," says Starr. "But on the road, you're looking for stuff to do. That was a fun night."

Though the tours have been largely absent of diva behavior, Walsh could usually be counted on for some rock star antics. A pioneer in hotel room destruction, the guitarist truly outdid himself the night he glued the furniture to the ceiling of his suite at the Ritz Carlton. "He carried a hot glue gun and glued the table to the ceiling," recalls Chonis with a laugh. "And the lamp — plugged in, turned on — and the ashtray with a lit cigarette in it. Then he took a bunch of Polaroids. The tour manager showed me." The stunt came with a $4,000 price tag. "Joe came in for a sound check, and I just said, 'Hey Joe! Have a nice time last night?' He says, 'It was worth every penny!'"

Room trashing was never really Starr's thing. These days he keeps busy on tour with photography. It's a passion that first began during his tours with the Beatles . "There's only like five photos of me from age 1 to age 17. When I joined the Beatles and got some money, we all got cameras. I seemed to be the one using them the most. We all took photos, everybody. John took photos, George and Paul took photos. I just kept it up." These vintage shots formed the bulk of his 2013 photo-memoir Photograph , but more recently he's graduated from film to digital photos. "I've turned into one of those people now. I mainly take phone pictures. There's like 2,500 right now on my phone." He opens the camera roll on his touch screen and shows me some of his latest. There's a serene cloudscape over the Detroit River outside his hotel room ("I just looked out the window and I thought, 'I've got to shoot that.'") and a whimsical fish-eye self-portrait taken through the reflection of a lamp in his room. "That's pretty cool. I'm going to post that later," he says, acting as his own social media manager. "The people who know me on Twitter can tell when I'm on tour. They see these crazy pictures. I send them pictures of spoons, or a face in my dinner."

This fall he'll release some of his favorite images in a new book, Another Day in the Life . Like the man himself, the photos are warmly funny and, occasionally, gently profound. Collections of stars, peace signs, flowers, food and even electric plugs blend together with shots of superstar friends and exotic locales. It's a fascinating glimpse at life from a Beatle's point of view, with commentary that adds fresh perspective to the commonplace.

The moon is a frequent subject of his photography. Given the recent 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing , I ask if he watched as Neil Armstrong took his giant leap for mankind. Turns out he hadn't, which is understandable considering it occurred around dawn London time. Plus, the Beatles were deep in the midst of recording Abbey Road and previewing an advance cut of the documentary that later became Let It Be . Obviously he had his hands full. Instead, he recalls a moment he shared with an astronaut ("Who shall remain nameless.") in the '70s. Starr had asked the space man and his NASA colleague to advise on a proposed studio he was looking to build in Los Angeles. The scheme never came together, but it gave Starr the opportunity to ask the one thing everyone wants to ask an astronaut. "I said, 'Man, what was it like when you were up there, and the earth was round?' He said, 'Oh, we were too busy.' I said, 'What? Too busy ?!' It blew my mind."

Speaking of busy, Starr's got a rehearsal to get back to. I let him eat his health bar lunch in peace.

The word "family" occurs with astounding frequency when the musicians and crew speak of their stints with the All-Starr Band. "We've been together a long time," Starr tells me. "I do feel it's like a family." And this family clearly has a patriarch. Many bandmates cite the Beatles' iconic appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 as their musical awakening. Yet they do a good job of keeping any hero worship at bay, maintaining a healthy level of respect and cheerful irreverence. Starr holds court during rehearsals from his familiar perch on the drum riser, setting the tone for jovial camaraderie and playful teasing with a steady stream of dry one-liners between songs. Together, they riff on each other's accents and nonsense words with lightning-fast comedy that can only be called (sorry) Beatlesque. A minor tech flub elicits an impromptu version of "If I Only Had a Brain." A computer reboot sets Starr off on an improvised version Engelbert Humperdinck's "Release Me," rechristened "Reboot Me."

After launching into their "With a Little Help from My Friends/Give Peace a Chance" finale for a desolate house, the band calls it quits for the day. Starr offers me one of his signature "elbow bumps" — a hygienic alternative to shaking hands, which he prefers on tour — and departs. As the stage clears, I can't resist an up-close peek at his famous pearly Ludwig kit. As I stand atop the riser, I stare out at the empty seats in front of me. It's hard not to visualize the rough and ready crowd at the Beatles' old Liverpool haunt, the Cavern. Or the television cameras at Ed Sullivan's CBS studios. Or the grand-stand lights at Shea Stadium, where the Beatles shattered attendance records. Or the tops of London buildings on a cold morning in January 1969. With a little imagination, it's a hell of a view.

The next morning, I meet Starr upstairs in his hotel suite. Show day is finally here, and nerves have given way to excitement. "It's a lot of hard work, the rehearsals, and then the joy arrives," he says. He's just come from his morning meditation, which is as much a part of his routine as eating breakfast or brushing his teeth. "I just feel it starts my day off so much better. You can slow that brain down. Somebody once said, 'Our eyes open and a Ferrari goes off in our heads.' It's true. It settles me down. Meditation is a spiritual practice. I'll always thank Maharishi. He gave me the mantra that I still have today."

For years he's been actively involved with the David Lynch Foundation , an organization that teaches meditation to at-risk individuals. He asks me if I'm a meditator, and I admit that I struggle. Graciously, he proceeds to give me a quick "Meditation for Dummies" lesson. "You can just sit there and breathe in and out through your nose. Focus on that till you stop the madness," he explains. "Some days it's like magic."

One thing he doesn't practice every day is music. "I never hit those drums unless I'm playing a show or there's musicians around," he says. But musicians usually are around when he's back home in L.A. Friendly drop-ins often lead to spontaneous recording sessions in his guest house studio. "Some people are just passing by and if I know you, you're on. I can use you," he says. "That's what you can do when you're at home. You don't have to book a studio or anything. You say, 'Oh, let's go do it.'" A new album is in the pipeline, featuring appearances by past and present All-Starr band comrades like Lukather, Ham and Walsh, as well as bassist Nathan East and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. "I like to hang out with writers and musicians, so I've been co-writing all the songs."

The collaborative process suits him well. After all, there's a reason why he tours with the All-Starrs and not as a solo artist alongside a revolving crew of anonymous session musicians. Given the choice, he'd rather be one of the boys in the band. He laughs when I ask him about the one and only drum solo he ever played, "The End" on Abbey Road . "All 13 bars! They forced me to do that one," he exclaims before playfully banging out the part on the table with his hands. "I'm just not a drum solo drummer. I want to be in the band. I want to say, 'Let's go!' I hold them all together and they can go mad. I'm crazy about very few drum solos I've heard. It's just not a thing I'm interested in."

Abbey Road has been on his mind lately, with the expanded 50th-anniversary edition due to be announced in a matter of days. "People always love the Beatles," he says, smirking slightly at the understatement. "Part of the new [ Abbey Road ] package has, like, Take Two of 'Octopus's Garden,' say, and we actually put out Take Four. Well, people are interested in all of that! And it's interesting now with the remastering. People are telling me, 'Oh, you can play!' Because they can hear the drums [better] now." Recorded while tapes from the band's January 1969 Get Back (later Let It Be ) project were mired in creative limbo, Abbey Road would be the last album the Beatles ever recorded together. "If it hadn't been for Paul, we would've made a lot less records because he's the workaholic," Starr says. "John and I would be in the country, hanging. The phone would ring and we'd know. It was telepathic! 'He's calling us again!' 'All right lads, should we go on and make a record?' But Abbey Road, to me, is a lot of fun because of 'Bathroom Window' and songs like that."

His second solo composition in the band's catalogue, "Octopus's Garden" was inspired by an unscheduled trip Starr took with his then-wife, Maureen, and his children in the middle of tense sessions for what became known as 'The White Album' in 1968. "That time was pretty stressful because I had left the Beatles. I couldn't take it anymore. I said, 'I'm going with Maureen and the kids.' We went off to Sardinia on Peter Seller's yacht. We ordered fish and chips and they brought us octopus and chips. 'Octopus? Man, we've never eaten octopus!' Later on, thanks to some 'Bob Marley products,' I was hanging out with the captain. He was telling me about how octopuses make these gardens. They go around the ocean finding shiny things and putting them in front of their cave. It was like, 'Whoa, that sounds good.' That's how I wrote 'Octopus's Garden.' I wanted to be under the sea then, but it was just a down time. It was beautiful because [the other Beatles] were sending me messages: 'Come on home.' When I got back and I went to the studio, George had put flowers everywhere. It was beautiful."

Even though it's one of the band's most beloved albums, the tale of Abbey Road 's creation tends to get glossed over in Beatle lore. In the autobiographical documentary The Beatles Anthology , the sessions are reduced to a few minutes of the 10-hour series. I ask if he has happy memories of recording the Beatles' studio swan song. "You know, that was when we had a bit of contretemps," he says in measured tones . " There were a few harsh moments, but not on the music. After the count in we all gave everything, as we always did. That didn't alter. It was a personal thing and it faded."

Any squabbles long since behind them, Starr continues to make music with his one-time bandmate. Over the years they've regularly played on each other's albums, with Macca most recently adding bass to Starr's 2017 album, Give More Love . The stickman returned the favor in July when he got behind the kit for two songs on the final date of McCartney's Freshen Up tour at L.A.'s Dodger Stadium. Starr's crew always welcome the chance for the pair to reunite. "They love each other a lot," observes Chonis. "They're like brothers from another mother. And they have a lot of respect [for one another]. You look at all the stuff they went through together, and they're the only two left." McCartney gave Starr the ultimate birthday gift in 2010 by surprising him onstage at the end of a concert at Radio City Music Hall. The birthday boy was thrilled. "He couldn't believe we kept it secret," Chonis says. "He was really, really happy about it."

In addition to his Beatle brother, Starr shares an extremely close bond with Barbara, his sons Zak, 53, and Jason, 52, daughter Lee, 48, and step-children Francesca, 51, and Gianni, 47. When he's away on tour, he stays in touch the same way most 21st-century clans do. "We've got a family text. It's so great. We're that sort of a family in the modern age." He produces his phone and scrolls through the seemingly active thread, packed with photo updates and lots and lots of emojis. He ends each text to his children with a simple sign-off: "Daddy loves you." I'm taken aback as the hearts and smiley faces fly by. For just a second, he's not a rock star, but just a sweet dad who's proud of his kids.

Then I notice the silver sword charm dangling from his ear lobe and have a brief "Holy s—, I'm talking to Sir Ringo f—ing Starr" moment. It's a tribute to his character that these don't occur more often. I realize I haven't congratulated him on his knighthood, a chivalric faux pas if there ever was one. "That was a beautiful experience," he says of the ceremony that took place at Buckingham Palace in March 2018. "William is such a cool guy — excuse me, a cool prince !"

His astonishing present and humble beginnings suddenly collide into one in my mind. I think of little Richie Starkey, the sickly kid raised in the grim aftermath of World War II by a single mother in Liverpool's gritty Dingle neighborhood. What the hell would Sir Ringo say to that little boy? Is there anything to possibly prepare him for what life has in store? Any lessons to impart after decades of dizzying success on almost every metric imaginable? "You can't tell him anything," he insists, almost offended that I'd dare suggest he alter the space-time continuum. "It's like what we were talking about yesterday. If I'd have gone to Houston it would have been another path. You don't know. Maybe, 'Don't worry. Everything turns out fine.' You just got to go along this path on your own. Try your best to do something you love."

We end our interview so Starr can prepare for the night flight after the show. "Packing day," he groans before crumpling with a comedic flourish. He hugs me goodbye and asks if I'm attending the show. "It's gonna rock," he assures me. Of that I have no doubt.

Hours later I see him again, preparing to receive a line of meet and greet ticket holders. Watching several dozen fans experience a major life highlight is akin to watching children open their dream gift on Christmas morning. Some yelp with joy, others laugh nervously, a few get teary and more than a couple quiz him on Beatles minutiae. Starr handles them all with charisma, care and skill honed from half a century of lopsided social interactions. His ability to make people feel special in 20 seconds or less just might be on par with his musical talents.

I recall a story he told me about the time he went to see singer Johnnie Ray in Liverpool as a teen. "My friend and I followed him because we were fans. He went into a restaurant in Liverpool and we were looking in the window. We said, 'He's eating, just like a real person !' I think that helped me cope in many ways with the Beatles madness. You understood the fans because I was a fan. It gets crazy."

The backstage area at the Colosseum is now buzzing with pre-show activity as fit-looking people with lanyards sprint in every direction. The smell of patchouli incense and the sound of stray guitar twangs fill the air. Steve Lukather limbers up his fingers with a bulky acoustic 12-string, serenading me with Byrds and Led Zeppelin classics. "Twenty minutes!" someone shouts, and the band start to congregate in the wings. Starr appears last, and they share a brief pre-show huddle. Then the All-Starrs hit the stage and start to vamp, while their leader stands alone in the wings, jogging in place and touching his toes like an athlete. A small flashlight points the way and he's off, sprinting headlong onto the stage to the rockabilly roll of "Matchbox" — the Carl Perkins chestnut he made his own with the Beatles in 1964. The speedy entrance wards off stage-fright, and he instantly owns the room with the gravitas, humor, and ease of a seasoned and extremely beloved late-night host.

An appearance by Starr in any capacity has a supernatural effect on nearly all present. Regardless of age, gender, race, and practically anything else that may divide us, to see one of the Fabs perform their musical magic ranks up there with sunny summer days, newborn kittens, and carb consumption as one of the life's unimpeachably Great Things. While almost none of the songs performed are less than 30 years old, Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band is not a nostalgia act. "Nostalgia" implies something static, irrelevant, and vaguely frivolous. No, Starr and his merry band are much too vibrant for that, and the message of peace and love that they sing is just as relevant today.

Each All-Starr gets their moment to shine. The incendiary Latin funk of "Oye Como Va" showcases the band's virtuosity, and allays any fears that the show would merely coast on Starr's storied past. Lukather did justice to Santana (no easy feat) and keyboard supremo Rolie recreated his fierce part heard on the original recording. Lukather went on to lead the group through a trio of Toto hits—"Africa," "Rosanna" and "Hold the Line"—while Hamish Stuart reveled in the funky groove of AWB's "Pick Up the Pieces" and "Cut the Cake." Colin Hay offered perhaps the most surreal moment of the night: the chance to watch Starr gleefully sing along to Men at Work's "Down Under." Warren Ham plays the role of Captain Many Hands, impressively alternating between flute, sax, keyboards and percussion. Gregg Bissonette, hometown hero of nearby Detroit, pummels the drums for all they're worth, filling the space between Starr's laid-back shuffle.

The show goes by fast, and Starr sprints off-stage while the rest of the band lead the crowd through a few more chants of "Give Peace a Chance." He stands in the darkened wings, catching his breath. He's beaming, just like the fans at the meet and greet. For a moment it's just the two of us. He sees me and we exchange peace signs. Then a tour manager appears, drapes a jacket around his shoulders, James Brown-style, and whisks him off to a car. He's in the air by the time my head hits the pillow a short while later.

"Now you go and make sense of it all," Starr had joked as we wrapped up our last interview. It's quite a challenge. People have been trying to make sense of it all for over 50 years. How did this kid with a drum rise up to become one of the most cherished figures in popular culture? Starr is the last person who would attempt to answer that question. I think back to his astronaut acquaintance who had soared out of this world and glimpsed a perspective known only to a handful. Starr's more like the star man than maybe he realizes. He occupies a place few can even comprehend and done amazing things that will never be duplicated. And we all want to know: What's it like? What's it like to be a Beatle? What's it like to make history? What's it like to make the world sing? What's it like to make so many people happy? Don't ask him — he's too busy doing it.

Ringo starr on touring with his all starr band: “i have a passion for playing”.

M Ringostarr 050823 3

Ringo Starr is about to launch the latest tour with his All Starr Band – Toto ’s Steve Lukather ,  Edgar Winter , Men At Work ’s Colin Hay ,  Warren Ham ,  Hamish Stuart  and  Gregg Bissonette  – and there’s a simple reason why he keeps assembling all these well-known rock stars to join him onstage.

“Well, I have a passion for playing and, you know, I am the drummer, so I need a band in front of me,” he explains. “I get to play with a lot of good players, and I play all their songs, they play mine, but I also then get a spot in the front, you know, which is great, too.”

The tour gives each artist a chance to shine with their own material, and Ringo says he offers one piece of advice to everyone as each tour begins: “Let’s just support each other.”

He notes, “That’s what it’s about.”

And while Ringo just released a new EP, Crooked Boy , he assures fans that he won’t be playing any new songs on the tour, joking, “If you want to sell T-shirts, you do the new record.”

Instead, fans can expect an evening filled with some of their favorite tunes.

“We, like, do the hits from the bands. That’s what it’s all about,” he says. “So it’s a great day out cause you hear a lot of songs you really love. It’d be funny, wouldn’t it, to go on then not do ‘Little Help From My Friends.’ So I do it cause I know they love it and I love it.”

Ringo Starr and his All-Star band kick off their tour Wednesday at The Venetian in Las Vegas. A complete list of dates can be found at ringostarr.com .

Strict Rules Ringo Starr Makes His Staff Follow

Ringo Starr giving peace signs outside

To start by stating the obvious: Ringo Starr is one of the legendary Beatles . As a former Beatle, he's pretty much rock royalty and it would be sort of unsurprising to find out that he was high-maintenance, super-demanding, and when it comes to staff? Surely, he has a list of demands a mile and a half long, right? Only ... it doesn't seem that way at all.

By the time 2019 rolled into that train wreck of a year that was 2020, Starr had been celebrating 30 years with an albeit constantly changing lineup for his All-Starr Band. That's wildly impressive, and the group's longevity might just have something to do with Starr himself — and the way that he treats not only his fellow band members, but the behind-the-scenes people who make it all happen. When he spoke with People about the band's enduring popularity, he said it was down to one thing: "We've been together a long time. I do feel it's a family."

Meanwhile, Starr is also more hands-on than might be expected of someone who's been sitting at the top of the industry for a good long time. Anyone who follows him on X (formerly known as Twitter) can rest assured that they're following the real deal, and that it's actually him posting all those funky, emoji-filled messages. And that? That's pretty cool: As are some of the things that he does ask of his staff-turned-family.

Be prepared: Tours aren't vacations

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band have played all over the world, and it's easy to see how it might be tempting to schedule in a few days for sightseeing, relaxation, or exploring the various cities. While that might fly with some artists, Starr isn't one of them. According to what his longtime tour producer Dave Hart told Pollstar , he's got some major requirements that come alongside scheduling: "He would rather be playing than sitting in a hotel, and he's told me that on numerous occasions. For the spring tour, we added shows because we had two days off and he said, 'Hey, you might as well add them.'"

Hart says that Starr is also pretty strict when it comes to making choices that make traveling easier. That means booking logical routes — not like the irrational, criss-crossing tour that in 1959 ended with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper — and making sure that everyone's comfortable on the way.

Starr himself has talked about how he insists that as many shows as possible get booked. In 2023, music journalist Lisa Torem attended a behind-the-scenes Q&A with Starr and his band (via Penny Black Music ). Starr was asked about his schedule, and he replied that simply, he loved it. Too much time off? "Our tour manager gave us too many days off, so I complained. If I'm on tour, I want to play. ... We could play every night, but Edgar [Winter] needs a day off."

Be respectful, and check the drama at the door

Ringo Starr famously talks about peace and love a lot, but does he practice what he preaches? Absolutely, and that means that working for him requires leaving out the drama and being respectful of everyone else around. That's according to his go-to drum tech Jeff Chonis, and Chonis would know — he's been a part of the band's crew for every show the All-Starr Band has put on. He told People that it was actually pretty straightforward: "He doesn't allow drama. He sets the tone, and it's, 'Be respectful.'"

Chonis says that it's about more than just creating a brilliant work environment, and told Pollstar that his rules about drama allowed him to put the band together in the first place. "These amazing talents come in and they leave their egos outside because Ringo sets the tone. We don't allow drama. Everybody respects each other, whether it's a crew guy or a band member. There's no fighting, yelling, or arguing, because Ringo doesn't put up with that."

That sounds ... delightfully refreshing, actually. Starr told People that yes, of course his philosophy didn't work all the time, and of course, people are going to slip up and conflicts are inevitable. "We have to remember we are not saints — sometimes there's the attitude, the reactive. ... But we're doing the best we can."

Be prepared to have a little fun, and keep a sense of humor

Think that there's no room for pranks and practical jokes when there are thousands of people waiting to be treated to the most incredible musical experience of their lives? Ringo Starr thinks differently, because according to what he told Variety , "The rule was: We're not here to be tortured, let's have fun."

Starr told People that sometimes, having fun manifested in some pretty epic pranks. During one tour, they staged a massive backstage fight between Joe Walsh and Levon Helm — right down to arming the pair with broken (prop) bottles and knives. Clarence Clemons was in on it, too, calling their tour producer, David Fishof, to tell them to get to the dressing room stat: Things were getting ugly. Fishof ran in and promptly panicked at the sight, and although Starr didn't mention what he thought of the whole thing, everyone else apparently appreciated it. Starr said, "On the road, you're looking for stuff to do. That was a fun night."

Tour manager Donny Wightman says it's incredibly important to him that everyone walks away with some fond memories of fun times. In an interview with Louder With Ace , Wightman explained, "One of the things [Starr] will say ... he'll say at least once or twice a week, 'Hey, are the boys having fun?' He wants to make sure everybody's happy, everybody's having a good time, nobody's got issues or problems." And if there are issues? He wants them addressed.

He's not signing anything for anyone, so don't ask

Drummer and drum historian John DeChristopher has his finger on the pulse of the music scene — and that includes being good friends with Ringo Starr's drum tech, Jeff Chonis. In 2013, he wrote a blog post about trying to meet Starr via Chonis, and the fact that he was hoping to get something signed for an exhibition by the centuries-old Zildjian instrument manufacturers. Starr was using Zildjian cymbals at the time, so he thought he might have a shot at it ... but, it wasn't that easy. Starr had officially stopped signing autographs, even for those with a connection.

DeChristopher was able to get his meeting, but wrote, "I'll never forget the look he gave me when I showed up with the three drum heads for him to sign — his look said, 'Are you kidding me?'" Starr did sign, but only when he was assured that the drums were headed for a public exhibition.

It's been years since Starr asked fans to stop sending him fan mail, and warned, "... nothing will be signed after the 20th of October. If that has a date on the envelope, it's going to be tossed. I'm warning you, with peace and love." He was on The Howard Stern Show when he explained why the policy started: He had been signing guitar scratch plates, and someone in his circle found them — complete with a cheap guitar — selling online for thousands of dollars. Who can blame him?

Ringo Starr's rider requirements: No discrimination

This one's going back a bit, all the way to The Beatles and 1965. The Smoking Gun has a copy of their concert rider from a show in Portland, Oregon, and it's surprisingly short. It's just a few pages of pretty reasonable requests, but there are some things that are pretty interesting ... including the fact that ticket prices were to start at $4. (Adjusted for inflation, that's $39.33 in 2023.)

One of the requests was specifically for Starr, and that was a 4-foot-high riser that was big enough for him and his drum kit — which meant it needed to be 10 feet by 6 feet. Perhaps more interesting is that there's another note in there, too: The fifth rule that needed to be agreed upon and upheld simply states, "Artists will not be required to perform before a segregated audience."

And that, remember, was 1965. Fast forward to 2020, and anti-discrimination policies are still at the forefront of Starr's operation. He explained to the Beverly Hills Courier that it was actually pretty simple: "All each of us can do is stand up for what we think is right and treat people with peace and love and lead by example. I've never understood treating people differently because of the color of their skin. The Beatles didn't stand for it then and I still don't."

Everyone's a key member of the crew, so everyone's treated equally

While it might seem like a no-brainer that the biggest names on a tour get the very best hotel rooms, meals, and tour bus, that doesn't seem to be the case with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. When tour manager Donny Wightman sat down for a conversation with Louder With Ace, he shared something kind of surprising: Everyone gets a piece of the pie when it comes to those things that make life on the road just a little bit easier.

When asked if there was a massive divide between band members based on fame — or a lack thereof — Wightman clarified that everyone stayed in the same hotels. (And yes, he added, they're hotels that are just as nice as one might guess.) There's a nice plane involved, too, and Wightman says that it's a rule that when things get booked, they're booked for everyone. Everyone is included in everything, from getting comfy seats on the plane to a seat at the table when mealtimes roll around.

And that includes Starr, who is reportedly renowned for hanging out with the band and crew alike, and making sure everyone's feeling happy, included, and at home. Wightman says that although he's in the thick of things telling stories and cracking jokes, there's still an underlying, almost unspoken rule: "There is still, always, that respect."

Give 110%, and take responsibility when things go wrong

There's an old saying that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and while that might be true for Ringo Starr's absolutely epic All-Starr Band, there's a bit more to it than that. Starr seems to value not only the talents of each and every person in his band and crew, but their input as well. When tour manager Donny Wightman sat down to give Louder With Ace a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to tour with the group, he revealed that after the show, everyone was expected to sit down, talk about what happened — or what didn't happen — and take responsibility for the good and the bad.

Wightman said that the norm was to take off from the venue ASAP, in order to avoid the post-concert chaos. Once they got to where they were going, though, everyone reconvened. "Every night, the guys will critique their own performances," he explained.

In spite of the obvious fact that everyone involved is at the top of their game and some of the best in the industry, mistakes do happen. Although Starr expects everyone to give their all, he also seems to be incredibly understanding — especially if someone takes responsibility for their mistake. Giving it all they've got? That's important: If he thinks they're not, well, he explained to USA Today what happens then. "I've had some really incredible players, and several who didn't want to put in 100%." Were they in the next lineup? "No."

There's going to be some time at the gym

This one's kind of a loose guideline, and it's sort of Ringo Starr setting the tone and leading by example. When USA Today asked him how he managed to keep going at his pace as he started celebrating birthdays in his eighth decade, he credited a healthy, vegetarian diet, constantly keeping busy, and his long-standing gym routine. He revealed that he had a trainer that he worked with three times a week, and explained that even when they weren't around, or when they were on the road, he was still in the gym every day.

While it's not a requirement that his band and crew join him, tour manager Donny Wightman has explained (via Louder With Ace) that it's sort of an unofficial thing that happened every morning at precisely 10:30 a.m.

"They all want to make their appearance. None of them are gym rats, but ... they want to make a good impression." He went on to tell the story of one cowboy-boot-wearing member of the group who went once, realized that it just wasn't going to work for the gym, and was seen out buying more appropriate footwear later. "He wanted to fit in, he wanted to be one of the guys," Wightman said. So, while Starr might not specifically require anyone to join him, he does seem to set a good example by insisting that there's time made for his own personal workout schedule.

by Nick Stockton November 27, 2023, 10:36 am

Who would have guessed that, in 2023, The Beatles would be as relevant as ever? The remaining Fabs are riding high off the chart success of their record-breaking new single, “Now and Then,” so what better time for Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band to announce a 2024 Spring tour?

Videos by American Songwriter

The 12-show run announced today will see the Beatles drummer and his hand-picked lineup of rock legends, including Edgar Winter, Steve Lukather, and Greg Bissonette, kicking things off with six shows at the Venetian in Las Vegas before heading south of the border for two dates in Mexico City at the Auditorio Nacional.

The jovial Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer announced via press release: “sometime during and just after every tour I think ok that’s it – I’m going to stop touring. My family don’t believe me anymore and so it comes as no surprise to them that once again, I’m taking the All Starr Band back on the road!”

Ticketmaster presale begins Tuesday, November 28 – don’t hesitate to grab these tickets, because with all the hubbub around The Beatles these days, they’re sure to go fast.

Once general onsale begins, you can get your tickets via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Seeing a Beatle perform live is a bucket-list item for any rock fan, and Ringo himself has suggested that any tour could be his last. Don’t wait to get your tickets – you never know who might make a surprise onstage appearance.

The Beatles' 'Love' closes July 6. Why Ringo Starr says 'it’s worth seeing' while you can

ringo starr tour manager

For 18 years, all Cirque du Soleil needed was "Love."

But in a few weeks, the kaleidoscopic fever dream known as “The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil” will go dark on the Las Vegas Strip.

No more skate ramps and curlicue airborne tricks to imbue “Help!” with the joviality to match the music (if not the lyrics).

No more graceful trapeze routines to the heart-fluttering “Something.”

No more venue-size bedsheet to appear out of nowhere, flap over the heads of the audience and get sucked into the vortex of the stage while the mashup of “Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows” envelops your eardrums, inviting striking sensory overload.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The end of Cirque’s groundbreaking production – it was the first to feature all prerecorded music and fixate on a singular music act – is July 6 . A private performance will take place July 7, and considering the opening of “Love” on June 30, 2006, attracted Paul McCartney , Ringo Starr, Julian Lennon, Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison and Dhani Harrison among other VIPs, odds for prestigious sightings are high.

Endings are emotionally turbulent, and for the cast, crew, creative team and fans of “Love,” this finale triggers an ache.

“To this day when I hear a Beatles song, my heart goes directly to the show,” said Kati Renaud, senior artistic director at Cirque du Soleil who has worked with “Love” for the majority of its nearly two-decade run. “I see the scenes and the dancers and the choreography. (Original director and “Love” writer) Dominic (Champagne) would say, this is a rock ‘n’ roll poem and it’s this beautiful marriage of rock and poetry.”

Why is The Beatles’ ‘Love’ closing in Las Vegas?

Rumblings of the shuttering of “Love” started two summers ago when MGM Resorts International offloaded The Mirage – home to the show and its $100 million custom-built, sonically superior 2,013-seat theater – to Hard Rock International .

Changes typically accompany acquisitions and “Love,” never the top ticket seller among Cirque’s Las Vegas ecosystem of six shows despite its devoted base, was ripe for axing.

“The Hard Rock, you would think would keep the show (because of the music connection). But no,” said Beatles icon Ringo Starr in a recent interview with USA TODAY . “Honestly, we’ve had a good run.”

The transformation from The Mirage to Hard Rock will begin July 17, when the casino-resort closes. No reservations are being accepted after July 14. The Hard Rock Las Vegas, including a 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel tower, is expected to open in spring 2027.

Officials at the Hard Rock declined to comment on the closure of “Love” or future entertainment plans when contacted by USA TODAY.

The legacy of The Beatles’ ‘Love’

A Grammy Award-winning soundtrack of Beatles songs intricately knitted by Giles Martin is the spine of the colorfully chaotic production. Not only was “Love” the first Cirque show to utilize prerecorded music but it spawned other music-based Cirque productions.

“Viva Elvis” closed in 2012 at Aria Resort & Casino after a disappointing two-year run, but “Michael Jackson ONE,” with its spiffy choreography and another heady catalog, continues to thrive at Mandalay Bay after 11 years.

“Learning to produce a show with no live music was a new world for the artistic team of Cirque,” said Renaud. “This was definitely new territory for us and Giles played such an integral part in finding solutions and being such an advocate.”

Martin told USA TODAY in 2022 that when he first began work on the soundtrack to “Love” at Abbey Road Studios in the mid-2000s, “I was vilified by people there. They’re going ‘What is George Martin’s son doing, chopping up Beatles songs?’ The whole idea sounds ridiculous, especially if you’re a purist.”

But even the most devout Beatles fanatic had to acknowledge the magic of hearing some of the band’s most familiar pieces dissected and reconstructed for “Love,” starting with the chilling harmonizing on the opening “Because” to the snippets of “In My Life” and “Penny Lane” embedded in the psychedelic bubble-isciousness during “Strawberry Fields Forever” to the jaw-dropping mashup of “Drive My Car,” “The Word” and “What You’re Doing.”

In all, the show and soundtrack contain elements from 130 Beatles recordings.

Tweaks were continual throughout the show’s existence. A facelift took place in 2016 for its decade anniversary and the nearly 17-month pandemic-related shutdown allowed for some other modifications before "Love" reopened in August 2021.

The conclusion of the Cirque show also ends the only live production anywhere in the world licensed by The Beatles’ parent company, Apple Corps.

Is there a future for The Beatles’ ‘Love’?

A modified “Love,” perhaps as a touring production or at another permanent location, has been vaguely discussed, but nothing is imminent.

“To recreate something as it was created isn’t realistic, but to be inspired by it is definitely something Cirque thrives on ,” Renaud said. “Because of The Beatles’ music aspect of it, there is something quite popular and inviting in any discussions (about the show’s future).”

Starr also hopes that “Love” might live on in another form, but he isn’t bullish.

“It may happen again. But I’m making this up – there are no rumors going on. But it’s worth seeing,” he said. “We did keep the business open all this time.”

The “Love” cast of 60 includes longtimers Jimmie Cervera (as the distinctively dome-topped Dr. Robert) and Eugen Brim (as the wild-haired Father McKenzie), who left the production in 2016 but returned in February to reprise his role until the show is buried along with its name, as Eleanor Rigby would appreciate.

They and other "Love" employees have been meeting with Cirque brass to try to find other places in the company to fit their unique talents, including auditions for the “Love” dancers to potentially slide into the “Michael Jackson ONE” team, said Renaud.

As for those who might still be uncertain about whether or not to catch the show as its final dates tick down, Renaud has some motivating words.

“Someone who knows a little about Cirque who doesn’t care for Beatles music will come and see it because it’s a classic Cirque experience,” she said. “For those who are maybe avid Beatles fans, they will be thrilled because of how Giles has remastered the music and will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek moments only Beatles fans will recognize. Either group will be touched emotionally.”

Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr first rose to fame in the early 1960s as the drummer for the legendary rock group the Beatles, and is now the richest drummer of all time.

1940-present

Who Is Ringo Starr?

Ringo Starr, known for his easygoing personality, rose to fame in the early 1960s as a member of the legendary rock group the Beatles. Primarily a drummer, Starr also sang and occasionally wrote songs for the group, singing "With a Little Help from My Friends" and writing "Octopus's Garden."

Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, in Liverpool, England. He was an only child, and while his mother doted on him, his father lost interest in family life early on. His parents split up when Starkey was only four, and he never saw much of his father after that. His mother worked as a cleaning woman and then a barmaid to support them.

At age six, Starkey had an appendectomy and then contracted peritonitis, forcing him to live at a local children's hospital for 12 months while he recovered. This put him considerably behind in school, but just as he caught up (with the help of a tutor), he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and spent the next two years in a sanatorium.

One of the ways the staff tried to distract and occupy their patients was to have them form a band, and it was here where young Starkey first discovered percussion, using a wooden mallet to strike the cabinets next to his bed. From then on, despite musical talent with other instruments, he was a drummer.

In 1953 his mother remarried, and his new stepfather encouraged his interest in music. By 1955, when he returned from the sanatorium, school wasn’t much of an option anymore as he was too far behind. He tried a series of different jobs, which were unrewarding professionally, but introduced him to skiffle music via one of his co-workers. Skiffle was played with household objects instead of musical instruments (which were often out of the financial reach of struggling musicians) and Starkey started playing regularly with a band. He got his first real drum kit for Christmas in 1957.

The Beatles

In 1962, he officially joined the Beatles, replacing Pete Best. After their first gig at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, Best's fans were so angry about the switch that they gave Starr a black eye. The group's followers eventually came around, and Starr became a beloved member.

First, musically, he had to get past George Martin, who had signed the Beatles to EMI and was producing their first singles. Not ready to trust Starr yet, he replaced him with another drummer and assigned him to tambourine and maracas. Starr thought he was going to be fired, but things started to jell with the fans as well as the group itself; soon all four were on the same wavelength and the alchemy began.

The Beatles' single "Please Please Me" made the group a pop sensation in England. Their first album together, Please Please Me (1963), added fuel to the already growing frenzy that would soon become known as Beatlemania. Starr made a rare appearance on lead vocals for the song "Boys" on the album.

With their "mop top" hair and matching suits, the Beatles crossed the Atlantic Ocean to launch their own pop invasion of America in 1964. Beatlemania was in full force during their first U.S. television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show . Their single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had already climbed to the top of the charts before the taping and was followed by a succession of hits. And throngs of screaming fans—many of whom were lovestruck teenagers—filled the audiences of their live shows.

In June of 1964, Starr became ill again, when he was hit by pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and he was temporarily replaced on the road by Jimmie Nicol. He rejoined the tour a few weeks later, relieved to find out he wasn't being permanently replaced.

That same year, the Beatles took their music to the big screen with the humorous documentary film A Hard Day's Night (1964). For their next film venture and soundtrack album, Help! (1965), Starr provided the vocals for "Act Naturally." Both projects allowed Starr's comedic and acting talents to shine through. That same year, Starr married longtime girlfriend Maureen Cox. Beatles manager Brian Epstein was his best man, and George Harrison was one of his witnesses, along with the stepfather who had bought him his first drum set.

Also that year, the Beatles finally met one of their idols, Bob Dylan . According to legend, Starr was the first one to smoke pot with Dylan, while the others initially hung back. Times would change.

The Band Breaks Up

While Lennon and McCartney were widely praised for their songwriting talents, Starr's contributions were not as readily acknowledged. He was known for his strong drumming talents, but he also assisted in the group's creative process and was a key ingredient of the group's emotional stability and good humor.

Unlike past drummers who remained firmly in the background, Starr was seen an equal part of the Fab Four. Despite not being a songwriter of the same caliber as his bandmates, he was always featured on one song on each album, and was happy with the arrangement. His unique drumming style was an integral part of what made the Beatles so iconic, and would influence future generations of drummers for decades to come.

In 1966, the Beatles stopped touring, giving their last concert in August at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. They continued to record together, taking their music in new directions. They created one of rock's first concept albums with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), which was meant to be listened to in its entirety, in order. Other commercial and critical successes included The Beatles (often referred to as The White Album ) in 1968, to which Starr contributed the track "Don't Pass Me By."

During the recording sessions for The White Album , each member of the group started feeling alienated from the others, thinking the other three had a connection he was missing out on. When Starr saw himself increasingly left out of recording sessions (such as "Why Don't We Do It In The Road," which McCartney recorded entirely on his own), he quit the band, becoming the first member to do so.

His bandmates realized they had not been clear on how valuable he was to their efforts, and sent him telegrams calling him the best drummer in the world. When he returned to the studio, he found his drum kit covered in roses, spelling out "Welcome back Ringo." The band was back together, at least for a while.

Personal and creative tensions continued to erode the group. Starr spent some time on other projects, starring in the film The Magic Christian (1969) with Peter Sellers. They played their last gig together on top of the Apple Corps, Ltd. building in London, in January 1969, for the concert film Let It Be (1970).

In April 1970, the Beatles finally called it a day, with Paul McCartney's announcement that he was leaving the group. One of the most successful groups in popular music finished their run with more than 45 Top 40 hits in the United States alone—and left an incalcuable impression on millions of fans worldwide.

Solo Career

After the Beatles broke up, Starr embarked on a solo career. His first album, Sentimental Journey (1970), was a collection of Tin Pan Alley tunes, with arrangers including Quincy Jones , Maurice Gibb , Martin and McCartney. For his next effort, Starr went for country with Beaucoup of Blues (1971).

Starr was the one Beatle who continued to work with each of the others. He drummed on albums for Lennon (as well as Yoko Ono ) and Harrison, and he and Harrison co-wrote the hit single "It Don't Come Easy," for his 1973 album Ringo . Ringo gave him two No. 1 hits in the U.S., and was his best-selling solo record. The key to his success, it seemed, was a combination of his charisma and a rock solid group of collaborators. The same personality that made him the glue that held the Beatles together for so long is what drew other artists to him; the formula was a good one.

In addition to recording, Starr was flourishing in other creative directions at this time. He appeared films like 200 Motels (1971), That'll Be the Day (1973) and Son of Dracula (1974) with musician Harry Nilsson. His first directorial effort was a 1972 documentary about the band T. Rex, called Born to Boogie .

Starr founded his own record label, and continued recording, but as he later admitted, he was drinking and doing drugs to the point that he wasn't able to accomplish much else. During this period, Starr and Keith Moon, the hard partying drummer for The Who, were members of a drinking club called The Hollywood Vampires.

In 1976, a year after his divorce from Maureen Cox, he released Ringo's Rotogravure, which included songs written by each of the other Beatles. He had a few minor hits off it. Other albums followed, without much commercial success.

In early 1980, he co-starred in the comedy Caveman with Barbara Bach, and the two soon fell in love, marrying a year later. After Lennon was killed at the end of 1980, he appeared on a song with Harrison and Paul and Linda McCartney , "All Those Years Ago." Originally written by Harrison for Starr, the song, with modified lyrics, was released as a Harrison single in 1981 and hit No. 2 on the U.S. charts.

The same year, Starr's album Stop and Smell the Roses came out, with songs produced by Harry Nilsson, McCartney, Harrison, Ronnie Wood and Stephen Sills. It was supposed to include two songs Lennon had offered him, but Starr no longer felt it was appropriate to record them.

Starr reteamed with McCartney for the musical drama Give My Regards to Broad Street in 1984. The decade also brought his fame to a new generation, as he became the narrator of the kids' TV series Thomas and Friends , delighting children who probably didn't know he'd been a member of the most famous band in the world. (The show went on to use other famous voices, including George Carlin and Alec Baldwin .) For the show's spinoff, Shining Time Station , Starr played Mr. Conductor for a season.

On the musical front, Starr emerged as a bandleader in the late 1980s, touring with the first incarnation of his All Starr Band, which included Joe Walsh from the Eagles, Nils Lofgren and Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen 's E Street Band, Rick Danko and Levon Helm from the Band, and Billy Preston and Dr. John, among others. Over the years, Starr has done numerous tours with various artists under the All Starr Band banner, and produced several live albums of this continuously changing and evolving collaborative project.

While he continued to produce numerous solo albums, Starr received some his strongest reviews in years for 1992's Time Takes Time .

Two years later, he reunited with McCartney and Harrison to recreate some of the Beatles' magic. Using a Lennon demo for a song called "Free as a Bird," the trio released the first "new" Beatles single since 1970. They also collaborated on the Beatles Anthology project, giving extensive interviews about their time together for a miniseries and CD project.

"Free as a Bird" was released in 1995 and became a Top 10 hit. Another Lennon song, "Real Love," was also reworked and did well on the charts in 1996. Two years later, Starr appeared on the VH1 Storytellers television series, sharing his music and experiences as a recording artist, which resulted in an accompanying album.

Starr released Liverpool 8 in 2008. In 2009, he found himself onstage at the E3 conference with Olivia Harrison (George's widow), Ono and McCartney, promoting The Beatles: Rock Band , a new video game that sold over half a million copies in its first month.

Continuing to explore his career as a solo artist, Starr put out Y Not (2010) Ringo 2012 and P ostcards from Paradise (2015).

Ringo Starr in 2015 Photo by Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic

In 2013, Starr showed off his talent for photography. He published Photograph , which featured many never-before-seen, intimate images of the Beatles. According to T he Hollywood Reporter , Starr felt that the photo book could tell the story of his life as a Beatle better than a traditional autobiography. "They only want eight years, really ... and I did have a life before that and after that."

In April 2018, it was announced that Starr had signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with BMG. The agreement gave BMG rights to the drummer's songwriting contributions to the Beatles, including classics like "Octopus's Garden," as well as his popular solo tracks, like "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen."

He is currently the richest drummer in the world, with a net worth estimated at $300 million, and is a staple of Top 10 drummer lists even today, with other artists citing him as an influence and an inspiration.

Personal Life

Starr has been married twice. Wed to Maureen Cox from 1965 to 1975, the couple had three children together, Zak, Jason and Lee. Zak has followed in his father's footsteps and become an accomplished drummer in his own right, playing with such bands as The Who and Oasis. When Cox died of leukemia in 1994, Starr was there at her bedside.

He married his second wife, Barbara Bach, in 1981. Together, they struggled with alcoholism and went to rehab, with successful results, and they are still together.

Starr has seven grandchildren, and in August 2016, he became the first Beatle to become a great-grandfather.

Along with the rest of the Beatles, Ringo was awarded an MBE in 1965. In 2018, he was knighted by Prince William . Along with joking that he was "a bit shaky today on my own," he noted how much the honor meant to him.

Paul McCartney Had Nightmares About 1 'Demon' Beatles Associate

Paul McCartney spent the end of the 1960s in a state of distress over The Beatles’ new manager, Allen Klein. He hadn’t wanted Klein as the group’s manager, but his bandmates outvoted him. McCartney said he grew so stressed about Klein’s presence in band affairs that he started to have nightmares about him.

Paul McCartney frequently had dreams about The Beatles’ manager

In 1967, The Beatles’ longtime manager Brian Epstein died . In the aftermath, the band struggled to manage themselves and began looking into new managers. McCartney wanted his future father-in-law, John Eastman, to take the job, but his bandmates outvoted him three to one. Against McCartney’s wishes , Klein became the band’s new manager.

Before they signed with Klein, though, he visited The Beatles in a recording session. McCartney knew John Lennon and George Harrison wanted Klein, but he was “dragging his heels.”

“So we got to the session, and Klein came in,” McCartney said in the book All You Need Is Love: The Beatles in Their Own Words by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines. “To me, he was like a sort of demon that would always haunt my dreams. He got to me. Really, it was like I’d been dreaming of him as a dentist.”

McCartney felt Klein was rushing the band to sign with him.

Paul McCartney said his stance on The Beatles’ manager made him feel like Julius Caesar

During the meeting, Klein pushed for the band to sign, and Lennon needled McCartney over it. He accused his bandmate of stalling for saying he wanted to take the weekend to consider the deal.

“I dug my heels in, and they said, right, well, we’re going to vote it,” McCartney recalled, adding, “I said, ‘No, you’ll never get Ringo to.’ I looked at Ringo, and he gave me this sick look like, Yeah, I’m going with them. Then I said, ‘Well this is like bloody Julius Caesar, and I’m being stabbed in the back!’”

He said that this was the first time the band had outvoted someone three to one. They moved forward with Klein as their manager.

He shared why he thought John Lennon liked Allen Klein

Lennon was Klein’s strongest supporter, which McCartney believed had to do with the manager’s treatment of Yoko Ono. She faced a chilly-at-best reception from the other Beatles, but Klein promised to help with her career.

Paul McCartney ‘Hardly Talked’ to John Lennon After an Awkward Mistake on the Phone

“I always had the impression that Klein had got them to go with him because he was the only one who was ever sympathetic to Yoko,” McCartney said. “Klein saw the Yoko connection and told Yoko that he would do a lot for her. Give Yoko a lot. And that was basically what John and Yoko wanted, recognition for Yoko.”

After The Beatles broke up, Lennon, Harrison, and Ringo Starr maintained Klein as their manager. By 1973, though, all had parted ways with him, which prompted him to sue them. They settled the lawsuit in 1977.

John Lennon’s ‘Help!’ guitar sells for more than $2.8 million at auction

It’s just the latest piece of Beatles memorabilia that has disappeared only to later sell for millions.

A lost guitar once used by John Lennon that was found in an attic sold at an auction for more than $2.8 million, making it one of the most lucrative Beatles memorabilia items sold.

The guitar, a 1964 12-string Framus Hootenanny that went missing for roughly 50 years and recently turned up in an attic, was used by both Lennon and George Harrison for the albums “Help!” and “Rubber Soul” in 1965, according to Julien’s Auctions. It was purchased by an anonymous buyer in New York Wednesday for a total price of $2,857,500, the auction house said.

The guitar was expected to sell for between $600,000 and $800,000, according to Julien’s. The auction house said the selling price makes the guitar the fifth-most-expensive guitar ever sold.

“Its new owner [is] now the custodian of a piece of Lennon’s soul, a tangible link to the creative energy that flowed through him and touched the lives of millions,” Julien’s said in a statement.

So how does a guitar like this just disappear? In 1965, Lennon gifted the instrument to Gordon Waller of the pop duo Peter and Gordon, as Lennon and Paul McCartney had been writing songs for them. Waller then gave the instrument to a manager, “who took the guitar home, tossed it in the attic, and gave it nary a thought for decades,” according to the statement.

A man in Britain then discovered the piece of memorabilia in his parents’ home when they were moving out of their house, Darren Julien, co-founder and executive director of the auction house, said in a video . The man informed Julien’s about the item this past March, Julien said.

“Finding this remarkable instrument is like finding a lost Rembrandt or Picasso,” he said in a statement.

The Style section

The team at Julien’s worked with experts to confirm it was Lennon’s guitar by comparing it to one seen in photos and stills of Lennon from the film, “Help!” The guitar and its case were also seen in photos from recording sessions.

Musician and author Andy Babiuk was one of the experts who helped identify the instrument. He said in a video on his website that this guitar was one of the few Beatles items that remained unaccounted for.

“It’s so important — it’s the sound that we hear on those great songs that we all love, and it’s so great to know that a piece of history has finally been found,” he said in the video.

Other Beatles items have been lost and found years later. Another of Lennon’s guitars was discovered in 2014 after it was reportedly stolen from him and bought by a musician in the ’60s. It sold for $2.4 million at an auction from Julien’s in 2015. (That same year, the auction house sold a drum kit from Ringo Starr for $2.2 million.)

Similarly, a Höfner bass guitar once owned by McCartney turned up this past February after it was stolen back in 1972 . The bass was once rumored to have been stolen while the Beatles recorded their final album, “Let It Be,” in 1969, according to the Associated Press. It was found after journalists and a guitar expert launched a campaign to find the guitar, which was used by McCartney for “hundreds of gigs” and several Beatles hits including “Love Me Do” and “Twist and Shout,” the New York Times reported.
