  • November 2015 - Any musical based on The Kinks’ rise to fame was going to be a good one

Rock out to the incredible back catalogue of the legendary rock band The Kinks with Sunny Afternoon tickets

Following a hugely successful run at the Hampstead Theatre, hit musical Sunny Afternoon opened at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2014, earning praise from audiences and critics alike. Featuring smash-hit songs from popular British band The Kinks, Sunny Afternoon earned the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Sunny Afternoon is a jukebox musical with a twist; based on the lives and careers of The Kinks musicians, the show documents the band’s rise to fame. Peppered with songs from The Kinks back-catalogue, Sunny Afternoon is great for fans of 60’s rock ‘n’ roll. Opening with the peak of The Kinks’ fame, as England fans chant “Sunny Afternoon” at the 1966 World Cup, the story jumps back in time to follow Ray and Dave Davies, Mick Avory and Pete Quaife as they get signed by an agent. One of the first working class bands from North London, Sunny Afternoon charts how the band came to conquer both Britain and America, along with some romance from Ray and Rasa’s first meeting.

Directed by Edward Hall, Sunny Afternoon is half-concert, half-story, featuring several iconic songs such as “You Really Got Me”, “Dead End Street”, “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”, “Set Me Free”, “All Day and All of the Night”, “I Go to Sleep”, “Sunny Afternoon”, “Waterloo Sunset” and “Lola”. Award-winning musician Ray Davies provides both the music and the lyrics, with a book by Joe Penhall and choreography by Adam Cooper.

Original cast members included Olivier Award-winning John Dagleish and George Maguire as Ray and Dave Davies, alongside Adam Sopp as Mick Avory and Ned Derrington as Pete Quaife. Sunny Afternoon’s current 2016 cast stars Danny Horn as Ray Davies, Oliver Hoare as Dave Davies, Damien Walsh as Mick Avory and Tom Whitelock as Pete Quiafe. Additional cast members include Megan Leigh Mason as Rasa, Jason Baughan as Eddie Kassner and Gabriel Vick as Robert Wace.

Child Friendly

Sunny Afternoon is recommended for those aged 11 and up, due to some mild adult content.

Sunny Afternoon announces UK tour

sunny afternoon musical tour 2023 london

Published 11 December 2015

Sunny Afternoon , the Olivier Award-winning musical currently playing at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre, will embark on its first ever UK tour in 2016.

Edward Hall’s critically acclaimed production, which has been bringing The Kinks’ much-loved hits to life in the West End since October 2014, will take to the road from August next year, beginning its tour at the Manchester Opera House.

Featuring a book by Joe Penhall, Sunny Afternoon explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of The Kinks against the backdrop of a Britain caught between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s.

Charting the story of how the legendary band, led by Ray Davies, exploded on to the music scene, the musical features many of The Kink’s popular numbers including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola.

Sunny Afternoon started life at the Hampstead Theatre in April 2014 before transferring to its current West End home. It has since won four Olivier Awards, including the prestigious prize for MasterCard Best New Musical, undergone its first major cast change and extended its West End run numerous times.

Tickets for the show’s London run can be booked through us here .

For performances from 1 January to 12 February you can also book tickets through Get Into London Theatre , our annual promotion offering cut-price tickets for a wide range of London shows at £10, £20, £30 or £40 with no booking or postage fees to pay. Book now .

Sunny Afternoon – New Wimbledon Theatre and Touring

rsz_sunny_afternoon_tour_-_ryan_odonnell_ray_davies_mark_newnham_dave_davies_andrew_gallo_mick_avory_and_garmon_rhys_pete_quaife_photo_kevin_cummins1-1024x683

Sunny Afternoon continues at the New Wimbledon Theatre, London until 1 April, then continues on tour until 13 May.

Star rating: four stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ✩

If you admire the quirky genius of Ray Davies, you can’t help but love Sunny Afternoon , but even if the music of the Kinks – one of the most dysfunctional pop groups in history – doesn’t float your boat, it’s still a great story, dramatically woven around songs that have stood the test of time.

The North London rock group made a mint in the 1960s (but saw very little of it) shortly after The Beatles and Rolling Stones transformed the British pop scene.

The cynical ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’, ‘You Really Got Me’, ‘Tired of Waiting For You’, ‘Waterloo Sunset’, ‘Lola’ and the title song have a unique, often world-weary Englishness about them that separated the group from the positive, bullish Great Britain going on around them.

Much more than a jukebox musical, it impressed tremendously in a two-year stint in the West End, walking off with four Oliviers, but on second viewing and an entirely different cast, this touring version that has been doing the rounds since August is no poor relation.

‘Waterloo Sunset’, a homage to our gorgeous and now-frightened capital, still has the power to move grown men to tears. The lyrics describe a solitary narrator watching two lovers cross Waterloo Bridge and reflecting on the couple, the Thames and the railway.

While his wild-man younger brother Dave was as mad as a box of frogs, the thoughtful, reflective Ray appeared to have been the only near-normal one in a band that remains the only British group to have been drummed out of the USA after refusing to tow the Musicians’ Union line and pay its dues.

That scene is a richly comic moment and if you raved over Jersey Boys , you’re likely to appreciate this one maybe even more (book by Joe Penhall; music, lyrics and original story by Davies) because it is closer to home.

It matches in fizz and spirit the Small Faces musical All Or Nothing , a more recent take on another legendary London group. The two shows are linked because Mark Newnham, who plays the violent, foul-mouthed Dave here, was a memorable Steve Marriott in All Or Nothing at The Vaults.

Big brother Ray (Ryan O’Donnell, totally believable) has given Newnham the showier role – he didn’t have much choice given Dave’s penchant for wearing dresses! – while making himself the tortured one with bad teeth and a stutter, miserable with homesickness and missing wife Rasa and child like mad during an American tour filled with problems.

What made The Kinks so different was that they were proudly London at a time when the North was getting most of the rock’n’roll glory. Even American groups were trying to sing with a Liverpool accent and while the Stones were from the South, they sang American-style material. Davies’ style, less frantic and often sarcastic, required more careful listening.

Who, for example, among the chanting audience joining in the show’s finale ‘Lola’ realised it was all about an innocent abroad who falls for a transvestite’s charms in a Soho bar – “walked like a woman and talked like a man”?

It was Davies’ most daring song and, coming in 1970 six years after their first chart-topper ‘You Really Got Me’, more or less marked the end of their golden period.

Sadly, they never saw much of the fortune they made or else failed to hang on to it. It was the old story of a naive band from humble beginnings, in their case Muswell Hill, being turned over by incompetent or unscrupulous managers, and all sides of that coin are woven into a turbulent story that is never less than an absorbing sidebar to their music.

There are some marvellous set pieces and vibrant, miniskirted dance support. ‘Sunny Afternoon’ itself is given a high-octane production ‘marriage’ to England’s World Cup triumph in that summer of ’66, leading into a choke-out ‘Lola’ finale that gets everyone up on their feet and singing along.

Director Edward Hall nails the humour and pathos of a piece in which the pace never slackens and Adam Cooper’s inventive choreography provides many a joyously high-kicking moment.

The cast throws everything into it with O’Donnell capturing all the wit and sadness of Ray, especially in the moving scenes with stay-at-home wife Rasa (Lisa Wright).

Newnham is hilariously over the top as the outrageous, unhinged Dave, while Garmon Rhys’ plaintive, well-observed guitarist Pete Quaife and Andrew Gallo, as drummer Mick Avory, are the other two long-suffering members of the band.

Joseph Richardson and Tomm Coles have the time of their lives as toffish Tory early managers of a devoutly Socialist band, and Robert Took doubles up as Ray’s father and famously corrupt manager Allen Klein who negotiated vastly improved deals for the impecunious group while not forgetting to feather his own nest first.

At almost three hours, Sunny Afternoon is good ten minutes too long but if it’s a Sunny Evening you’re after, this is still the place to be.

come dancing!

This hit musical is back and ready to head out on tour in 2020, giving audiences across the UK the chance to discover the story of The Kinks - sprinkled with a little Olivier-winning musical stardust of course! Written by Joe Penhall with music and lyrics provided by Ray Davies, Sunny Afternoon was a hit in London in 2014, where the production scooped up four 2015 Oliver Awards, including Best New Musical. Now resurrected by Sonia Friedman Productions, it's time to Come Dancing once more!

Follow the lads back to those golden days astride the conservative Fifties and free-wheeling Sixties, where Ray and his brother Dave Davies and their band work their way to chart success in Britain, then the States, before getting barred for their on-stage rowdy antics at the height of the British Invasion.

In 1963, a group of mouthy lads from Muswell Hill, led by brothers Ray and Dave Davies set out to change the world with their hard-rocking and witty social commentary. More anarchic than the Beatles, they led the way in crushed velvet suits and Chelsea boots, stomping a riotous path to America, with a few breaks to swing from the chandeliers along the way. From London to state-side, Ray's sensitive lyrics were combined with Dave's high-kicking antics, leading to an unheard-of four-year ban from the U.S! Dumped back into depressed poverty in London, they staged an uproarious comeback in the wave of the World Cup optimism of 1966. This is the definitive story of The Kinks and we dare you not to dance all the way home.

What we thought

FRESH vibrant Fun

Sunny Afternoon the real deal, taking on those four mouthy lads from Muswell Hill and crafting a wonderfully fresh and funny show around them.

I haven't seen a jukebox musical unless you count cringing through Mamma Mia at my mother's 50th birthday party, but I don't like to think about that as a jukebox, or at all...But I have seen Ray Davies, twice. Once live..

Sunny Afternoon: national tour announced

2015-12-11T15:48:24+00:00

Sunny Afternoon%3A national tour announced %7C SUNNY AFTERNOON. Current West End Cast 2015. Photo by Kevin Cummins.

Sunny Afternoon , the musical based on the music of The Kinks, will embark on a national tour next year.

The production is already well into its second year in the West End, and the touring production will feature a new cast when it opens at the Manchester Opera House on 19th August.

The show features some of The Kinks’ biggest hits such as You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola .

The plot of Sunny Afternoon is based on the early life of Ray Davies, the lead singer of The Kinks, and how he, alongside the rest of the band, rose to fame.
