lol, I am greek. It's only greek.

The first acclamation in the Ordinary of the Latin Mass, sung directly after the introit. The basic text, which is Greek, consists of ‘Kyrie eleison’ (three times), ‘Christe eleison’ (three times), ‘Kyrie eleison’ (three times): ‘Lord, have mercy ... Christ, have mercy ... Lord, have mercy’. The phrase ‘Kyrie eleison’ was used in Eastern and Western litanies from at least the 4th and 5th centuries, and St Gregory the Great (pope 590-604) is credited with establishing its use together with ‘Christe eleison’ in the Roman Mass. By the 10th century the ninefold shape was established.

its fucking greek

It's definitely not Latin people. So I'm inclined to believe the others who say it's Greek :-)

No matter where,no matter what time. I can listen to this song over and over and over. I love this song and it would be one of the top 5 favorites in my lifetime, for me :):):)

This song deescribes life and need to ask help from God across difficulties symbolised by the road that we must travel

It's a prayer

Kyrie by Mr. Mister

the road that i must travel lyrics

Songfacts®:

  • "Kyrie Eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy." It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services. Greek was the original language of the New Testament, which was later translated to Latin.
  • This song is credited to lead singer Richard Page, keyboardist Steve George and lyricist John Lang. Clearing up an urban legend that Page wrote the song after being attacked, John Lang told the Chicago Sun-Times of July 9th 2004: "Richard Page did write the music and melody, but I am the one who wrote the lyrics. I got the inspiration from singing it as a kid in an Episcopal church in Phoenix. Also, 'Kyrie' had nothing to do with Richard being assaulted, mainly because it wasn't Richard who was assaulted - it was me! But that happened three years before writing 'Kyrie,' and had nothing to do with that song."
  • When this was a hit, very few people listening to Top 40 radio had any idea that they were singing "Lord Have Mercy, Down the Road that I must travel!" The religious significance was mostly lost. >> Suggestion credit : Jeff - Charleston, SC
  • Mr. Mister was not a Christian band, but their frontman Richard Page considered this song a prayer. "I get a lot of power from meditation, from being still and realizing that what I'm doing is insignificant compared to the universe," he said. "That's what the song is all about."
  • The group wrote this while they were on tour with Adam Ant. It was a year before they recorded it.
  • The first single from the Welcome to the Real World album was " Broken Wings ," which went to #1 US in December 1985, giving the band their first American chart-topper. "Kryie" was the next single from the album, and it made the top spot in March 1986.
  • The music video was shot in December 1985 when Mr. Mister were opening for Tina Turner on her Private Dancer tour. Director Nick Morris shot footage of the band at their concert in Pembroke Pines, Florida at a venue called the Hollywood Sportatorium. The beach was nearby, so Morris also shot the band there and took footage of them doing rock star stuff before the show: riding in a limo, entering the dressing room, etc. Morris, a British director who would later do the videos for Europe's " The Final Countdown " and Cinderella's " Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone) ," had never shot a video in America before, and didn't know that you needed release forms to show anyone's face. This caused a problem when after the video was cut and distributed, he was asked for the releases from the older guys on the beach the band is seen interacting with. Fortunately, these guys were regulars at this spot, so a production assistant was able to track them down and get the signatures.
  • The day they started shooting the video, the band read a negative review in the Los Angeles Times that was devastating for Richard Page. "His face dropped and he was in the saddest mood all day thinking he'd come to the end as a credible musician," director Nick Morris said in a Songfacts interview . "I remember thinking, I won't let my musicians who I'm about to work with read papers on the day of the shoot ."

  • Mark from Phoenix Kylie Eleison is perhaps the most important prayer in the world. It is called the Prayer of the Heart. The Heart in the Eastern Church is the Center of your soul, and the Center of your whole being. It is where Christ is seated. It is the Altar of worship. Because the soul and body are united, it is found inside your body - near your diaphram or heart. It is where we fulfill the Great Commandment to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your strength and with all your soul. It is often said as "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy. Very powerful. It activates the Holy Spirit if you focus into your heart while saying it.
  • Andrew from New Zealand Someone said they thought he was singing "Carry me I'm lazy".....now that definitely sounds like a Weird Al parody! I have to laugh at all holier than thou comments by people taking this as an invitation to preach religion and politics.
  • Flashlite from Tennessee All the online articles say this song, Kyrie, was "released" in December or 1985. How is it that I'm remembering hearing it & falling in love with it, on the radio, around April of 1984, right after I'd arrived in Minnesota for 9 months?? Might that have been on the radio, then -- or is it my memory being off?
  • Jeff from Boston Add me to the list of those who thought the lyric was "Give me a laser" when this came out when I was a kid. Given the heavy synthesizers, the emphasis on technology by bands like Devo and Styx and just the weirdness of 80s pop in general, it seemed like a perfectly plausible lyric.
  • Laura from Usa too bad the man who wrote this didn't know the One He was singing "have mercy" to
  • Kc373 from Illinois Love love love this song. It lifts my heart to my savior creator and God…..that’s what the band should take away. How many people were lifted to praise Jesus because of this song. 35 years still
  • John From Ireland from Ireland Give me a laser!
  • Rcobourn from Hades Quote "Esskayess from Dallas, Tx Made me laugh at how many atheists must have sung this song, not realizing what they were actually singing" Not a problem. We can say "Lord Have Mercy" with as much meaning as when we say "God Damn It!"
  • Erica Elaine from Illinois As a Catholic I've always considered them a Christian band. They got so popular I realized nobody knew what they were singing.
  • Esteban from Kansas City Always thought it was "Give me a laser" which I took as a new age plea for guiding light by the singer. Sort of funny to see the many others who thought the same thing and it touches on the importance of not over processing vocals when recording them. The percussion at the beginnng of the song reminds me rudimentarily of San Jacinto by Peter Gabriel. As to the theme, it's not very inspirational to me. Begging for mercy is part of the human condition and is all too understandable. At some golden point in God's grace however, it is an acceptable and conducive choice to shift from beseeching God for mercy to simply thanking God for his mercy. What does Christ's mercy mean not just to you, but rather for you? That's the question that correctly answered brings peace.
  • Irene from New York City I was ever so happy to hear this tune from the first time. For me it is right up there with Higher Love by Stevie Winwood, inspirational and elevating. Needless to say I am very familiar with the expression as it is an essential part of the Greek Orthodox religion, of which I follow (humbly and not perfectly) so I ask each day "dear Lord have mercy on me." A very comforting expression and reassuring as there is always room for forgiveness where there is humility. Thank you for this song!
  • Julie from E Wa State Usa Funny they say that most people didn’t know what Kyrie Eleison meant! From the first day I heard it as a young 20 something I knew EXACTLY what it meant, being the “ good Catholic Girl” I was! It became my number one song and gave me many years of inspiration! I knew Mr Mister wasn’t a christian band and I was surprised when it went to number one, but it’s still one of my most favorite 80’s song! I was listening to Xm 80s on 8 and it came on so I thought I would finally look up why they wrote it, I used to actually run to it with my walkman on! Lol Love these guys!
  • Urroner from Utah I was working in the Space Program when the song first came out and we all thought I was "carry a laser. " It was for five years before our boss told us we were singing it wrong. Dude how cow you let us do that. Hed just smile and said he liked both versions
  • Nona Yrbsns from San Diego @Peter From Downunder from NZ and @Pf from Texas: OMG, you gave voice to my same thoughts! I had that song stuck in my head all morning and couldn't figure out what I was 'hearing' and thought the same thing all these years: Keerie Alaysan was a girl with whom he was in love. Had a devil of a time figuring out what to type into Google to force it to come up. But, thanks for the walk down memory lane. Your description of the time was spot on!
  • Carla @ Nc from North Carolina, Usa Wow! I just followed suit @Peter from Down Under and your account of the emotional travel this song brings to heart and soul is indeed true! Perhaps a gift that we did not know at the time...as adults I feel finally knowing what it means touches me even more. I always loved this song...now I treasure it....
  • Pf from Texas @Peter From Downunder from NZ: Everything you said, man - everything you said. I think it was just before "Broken Wings" came out big, bit Mr. Mister was opening for Tina Turner on her "Private Dancer" tour. A friend and I got to the concert late just as Mr. Mister had finished their set so we figured we were "on time" because we had come to see Tina. Only a few short weeks later did I realize just what we had missed Live! "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" - two of the greatest '80s hits that Always get turned up Loud and put on repeat. ;-D
  • Peter From Downunder from Nz Well here I am in 2020 finally looking up what lay behind this song 35 years after I heard it the first time. Yikes! A bit slow off the mark. :-| When I was a teen hearing it the first time, I thought the words were something like "kiri a laser", and I remember thinking "What the heck??". I couldn't make any sense of it. Not being Catholic and knowing very little about their various liturgies and rituals, I didn't connect the words to anything other than just simple "song word nonsense" that was common in the 80's. :-p Like one or two others have commented, this song has a very strong emotional resonance for me. After getting past my thing about the word "laser", I assumed I was hearing "Kiri Elaise" and decided that was a woman's name. So for me, this song has always felt like a love song about a woman. Considering what a disaster my teens and early 20's were in terms of "love and romance", songs like this one that appear to have a very strong yet romantic melody (for me, that includes songs like Toto's "Africa", Icehouse's "Great Southern Land" and Aha's "Take On Me") and take me back to those days whenever I hear them. It's kinda like biting on a sore tooth then letting go: it's a mix of pain and pleasure at the same time. Sad, but true, ha ha. I struggled badly with the 80's and 90's, the massive changes the swept through the world, and trying to find my place in it all along the way. This song for me represents the best and worst of life at the same time, and always brings a catch in my throat and a vague stab of pain in the heart when I listen to it. Even though I now know the song is nothing like I've held it to be over the decades, the melody will always be with me as one of those "blasts from the past" that have immediate emotional resonance for a time gone, of opportunities lost / squandered, and of an era that felt a lot safer and more normal than the weird, moral-less miasma of identity politics and the destruction of wholesomeness we see / experience in the 21st century. For all the nice gadgets and improvements in life in 2020, and all the things that were wrong with the world in the 80's (and the very basic tech, ha ha), I'd swap 1985 for 2020 in a heartbeat...
  • Jennifer from Scranton Pa "Kyrie Eleison" was just said during the prayer in the Chapel, during the last bit of Travolta/Cage's movie "Face/Off". Then I remembered the song and looked it up via a phoenetic speech pattern. Man, I love the internet. So much more robust than in 1997 when the movie came out, let alone the 80s when the song did!
  • Tia from Hayward I finally looked this up today because for some reason this song was flowing through my mind and I knew I did not understand the story and meaning, I love songs and lyrics and remember songs extremely fast if I can emotionally relate. I love the feeling of this song but I was pretty sure that not only did I not get the meaning but I was probably hacking up the words also. I love the hilarity of singing a song for years and seeing the actual lyrics. Often this happens in the middle of singing a song for the first time at karaoke and reading the words on the screen, I love when that happens. So here it is: I thought kireyay was probably a Russian girl's name and this story happened in history that she was killed and laying in the road and the man telling the story could see there in the road as he went on with his life, this girl he loved stayed on his mind so that is why the song is so emotional. "Kireyae lays upon the road that I must travel" Ha Ha!
  • Helena from United Kingdom This song has always inspired and uplifted me whenever I've needed to feel something spiritual. There's something special about this song and Mr Mister. I've been a fan of Mr Mister for nearly a decade. I was only born in the mid eighties so wasn't old enough to be into them when they were big, I used to hear this on the radio and I used to also think he was "carrying a laser" down the road...now I know it's Greek for Lord Have Mercy. Kyrie Eleison. I dunno, this song always reminds me of summer holidays when I was a kid, the blue sky and sand, the sea and the feeling of freedom.
  • Hayden from Seattle, Wa I think I was about 9 when my brother gave me his old mono reel to reel tape recorder and I recorded the song Timothy written by the guy who later wrote The Pina Colada Song. I wrote down the lyrics and was shocked to find out what I was actually grooving to. since then I made a point to find out the lyrics to what I'm listening to. I finally understand this song. Thanks.
  • Shari from Oklahoma I just learned today from a friend while discussing a church bulletin from the Episcopal church that Kyrie Eleison means Lord Have Mercy. It took me back immediately to the song from the 80's, so I looked it up. I always thought the lyrics were "Carry me I'm lazy down the road that I must travel."
  • Chris from Detroit I grew up Catholic, so I always knew what Kyrie Eleison meant.... but I've never figured out what he means by being "between the soul and soft machine". Any ideas? Maybe it's being torn between spiritual (soul) and physical (soft machine/body). Just a guess.
  • Seth from Shreveport, La Love that first 32 seconds.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, Ny On December 7th, 1985, Mr. Mister performed "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" on the NBC-TV program 'Saturday Night Live'... Both records peaked for 2 weeks each at #1 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart ("Broken Wings" peaked on Dec. 1st, 1985 and "Kyrie" on Mar. 23rd, 1986).
  • Julie from Plattsmouth, Ne This song is so uplifting! I listen to it whenever I can. What can be done to revive this song or change the lyrics to reflect what is happening in our country. This is such a moving song and we need the Lord's mercy!
  • Esskayess from Dallas, Tx Made me laugh at how many atheists must have sung this song, not realizing what they were actually singing.
  • Greg from Boston, Ma I was 11 when this song was popular and I just thought they were saying "Feedley Deeeeeeeee down the road that I must travel." When people would mention the song "Kyrie" I had no idea they were talking about this song. LOL.
  • Jeamette from Narberth, Pa I think of my mom every time I hear Kyrie. This song takes me right back to this memory; I had already graduated of high school by this time. I was in the living room; mom was resting in her chair and the radio played Kyrie. She told me that Kyrie Eleison was Latin for Lord, have mercy. (She studied Latin and at times we went to the Latin mass at The Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Philadelphia.) I listened to the song with a better appreciation, mom liked it too.
  • Christie from Sacramento, Ca I also thought it was "carry a laser" which was espeially poignant as I was working in a laser hair removal salon when I first noticed this song. I think the Muzak folks must have thought it was about lasers too!
  • Big Ed from Pulaski, Tn This was a great road song! I was a Jr. in high school when this song came out. Great memeories of me and all my friends hanging out at Old Hickory Lake
  • Don from Chicago, Il These guys are very talented musicians. Do you yourself a favor and check out their first CD, "I Wear The Face" as well as their third, "Go On."
  • Clarke from Pittsburgh, Pa Having been raised Catholic, and being *just* old enough to remember Greek and Latin being used in certain places at Mass, I always knew they were singing "Kyrie Eleison" and what it meant. And I liked the whole Mr. Mister series of hits, even including the last semi-hit, "Is It Love," which everyone else seems to have forgotten. "Broken Wings" gets the volume cranked up every time it comes on.
  • Steve from Rochester, Ny A friend and myself were talking about this song because he was makin a cd with songs that have girls names in them. He was wrong and so was I. We both thought it was Carry a laser. Now the song makes more sence.
  • Alberto Colonna from Turin, Italy It's like a prayer because the singer asks for help in all life's difficulties simbolyzed by the road
  • Alberto Colonna from Turin, Italy The first religious song i have sung
  • Alberto Colonna from Turin, Italy It's a very beautiful song so deep
  • Shannon from Palisade, Co Hey, I thought it was 'carry a laser' too! How funny! I have always wanted to know that lyric.
  • Joe from St. Louis, Mo Mr.Mister was a band made up of session artists. Richard Page now does Contemporary Christian Music
  • Chet from Saratoga Springs, Ny I was 13 when this song came out and my sister was 7. he thought the chrorus was the phrase..."Carry a laser"

Mr. Mister’s “Kyrie” Lyrics Meaning

by SMF · February 11, 2020

Even though it is not generally interpreted as such, at the end of the day it has been asserted that Mr. Mister’s “Kyrie” is more or less a prayer. More specifically the phrase “Kyrie eleison”, which is repeated throughout the track, actually is Greek. When translated to English, it means “Lord have mercy”. And it is the opening line of a traditional prayer in certain parts of Europe. So we know that to some extent, the addressee of this song is actually God Himself.

But there is a particular reason he is appealing directly to the Most High. The way the story reads is that his heart is compelling him to venture into the unknown. Or stated alternatively, he has a spiritual yearning to set out into the open world in search of his destiny. And in acknowledgement of the inevitable dangers and uncertainties which lie ahead, he is asking for God’s mercy. Or more to the point, he anticipates the need for divine favor and assistance as being essential in actually succeeding at this life-threatening goal. And as such, he is attempting to establish the necessary rapport with God from the onset.

But unless you know Greek, the religious nature of this track is not necessarily forthcoming. Yes, even without knowing what “Kyrie eleison” means we can still pickup that the narrator is about to embark on a spirit-inspired journey. But more to the ultimate point is that he is trying to secure the backing of God in order to successfully complete this endeavor before taking off and throughout his mission.

Lyrics of "Kyrie"

Facts about “Kyrie”

RCA Records released “Kyrie” in 1985. The label issued it as the second single from the band’s bestselling album titled “Welcome to the Real World”. It should be noted that this album also produced the hit song “ Broken Wings “.

Three writers are credited with writing “Kyrie”. They are are John Lang alongside Mr. Mister’s Richard Page and Steve George.

Meanwhile the entire band produced the track in conjunction with Paul De Villiers.

“Kyrie” topped the Billboard Hot 100 as well as Canada Top Singles. It also made it to number 11 on the UK Singles Chart and in general charted in almost 15 nations.

The music video, which centers on a live performance by Mr. Mister as well as some pre-show footage, was directed by Nick Morris. The experience was initially marked by Richard Page as being depressed during the filming due to a bad review the band had just received in the L.A. Times.

I used to love that song when I was a kid but never quite knew what he was saying . Knew the title of the song , but still had no idea what it was about . I’m 46 or 47 now and wouldn’t mind not knowing how old I am if folks didn’t keep reminding me , and am just now realizing what it was about . Pretty interesting . Had no idea it had depth to its meaning . Thanks that kinda makes me like the song again for better reasons though than the things I liked as a kid that had a tendency to be vain . Thanks .

I am the same, singing this in the Subaru Brat heading down the hils of CO the chorus was about as crisp as a Snap, Crackle, and Pop a day old in a bowl of milk. No clue then, but very cool to reflect on it now.

Ha! I’m 72 and it’s in my favorite playlist…. Along with Broken Wings

Very powerful song. It is truly one of my favorite prayers.

Beautiful indeed, love the lyrics!

Love this song. Love GOD. This is about our journey to seek and find him. I, finally, found him, with all my heart, and love to serve and worship GOD on earth. BEAUTIFUL!

Enjoy your Delusion.

Those who doubt the reality of God have deluded themselves about the very character of this world. Yes, much here now distracts us from God’s awesome sevenfold goodness of Genesis One. Keep reading the next two chapters. Most of all: notice God’s goodness everyday, it is the gentle wonderful evidence of God’s fearful Holiness. Notice God’s spoken Word alone was sufficient to provide all good. Jesus the Christ, God’s Word reborn in the flesh, sacrificed in certain death, raised again to eternal Life is our only Hope.

Noticed the date of your post. WOW. I have no words for you.

Brave enough to be rude but not use your real name. “Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Including you. But because of your hatred for God it will be too late for you to repent. You indeed are the one deluded.

Looking around the world today, its difficult with the pain, the hurt, the divide, the wars, rights without responsibilities for us let alone that which we should yield to God.

I have stopped church for the past 3 years. The hole I feel in my heart is real – time to return to basics.

The song is power, mainly the chorus, but does it have anything to do with a sold out show in a park with attractive people, and a venture back to a slut fest on a street called “mark” in aurora ontario? Anyways I play it loud at the bar there and give the boys some good times, love and attention, love the ascending bass line. A hit in the mosh pit! So punch on to the song and leave the crowd stiff, well… one must remain to back go to the shack eh. Am I right? Let me know…

In the solemn, archaic words of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen, “I LIKE SONG FOR POWER SLUT SO GOOD I ENJOY MAKE SLUT POWER; I WASN’T EVEN BORN UNTIL THE NEW TESTAMENT” – Genesis 5:19

I LOVE SINGING IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND I AM ALSO TAKING SPANISH IN SCHOOL AND FOR THE WHOLE SONG ALL I HAVE TO SING IS THE WORDS KEYRIE ELESION

I bought this cassette in 11th or 12th grade and I absolutely loved it. I listened to it again at age 53 and I wondered what I was thinking…

Yeah I have to wonder why an old, beat down by life, douchebag would feel the need to write that ignorant comment in the 1st place. what’s up with you ya big fairy? unlike your bald, paunchy, a-s….if I like a song I don’t try to act above it all later in life. it was good then and remains so. I bet you golf too! wife left you after 20 years for a better deal. so tell us oh sage one, what do you listen to now? BTW I’m 58 and glad I’m not like you. still rockin a 6 pack and not a member of the HAIR CLUB FOR MEN.

A little agro, bro. Is Tim not allowed to have an opinion different from yours? You need to really lower yourself to ad hominem attacks? ‘Says a lot more about you than Tim’s comment says about him.

Never bought the song, never knew what they were saying, always thought it was way too repetitive and boring so I’d change the channel. Ultra idiotic name for a group too. Mr. Mister? Please. Agree with Tim here, why on earth did people buy this song?

Perhaps you are no longer able to enjoy something with the ring of decency?

I named my daughter Carrie but I spelled it k e a r y because I didn’t look at it on the song because I was in the understanding it did mean God be with you as you go

It is Greek for “Lord, have mercy”.

My daughter I named her keary after this song but did not look at the spelling of the word until after the fact really bums me out because I knew then I was under the understanding and meant God be with me as I go basically beautiful song.

I am writing about the sevenfold good God of Genesis One (for SevenfoldGood dot org) and just realized how that describes why God is fearfully Holy, as in 2 Samuel 6. Then I “randomly” felt like playing and understanding this very song.

Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel, Lord!

Because “Kyrie eleison” itself is the prayer “Lord, have mercy”, this very video may be the oldest of modern evangelical Christian praise song videos, such as collected on my Lyrics.com page. King David might well dance in his underwear to it (2 Samuel 6).

I agree. The song includes the depth of God. It’s not a typical pop/rock song. It’s a prayer of showing the way to go, Lighting the road to the destiny.

When the Catholic Mass was in Latin – Kyrie Elaison – Lord have mercy Christa Elaison – Christ have mercy

Coming home in the car this afternoon it was playing on the radio – ABC Bris. I loved the song back in the ‘80’s. Hadn’t heard it for years – I was singing at the top of my voice – felt great!! Still got IT@72😃

Well done Tim. I won’t add anything. Sue, absolute truth. Non believers will say this, bowing their knee, Jesus is Lord. Then be thrown. Thank both of you. There was never a choice for us. Non believers, some were created (born unto) perdition. I can never cross that line of everyone has the choice. I can’t claim the worst title, already taken, but very bad. Comparing today with that past would be like telling a joke. God sent me to Jesus. Thank you. I hope you get to read this someday. We walk by faith, not by sight.

Great song. I always knew the meaning of Kylie eleison since I was born and raised Catholic. I often chuckled with some of the people I knew that weren’t believers but loved the song and sang out loud to the lyrics. If they only knew :). Cranked it up on the radio when I was having a bad day or going through a difficult time and always brightened my mood.

I am 75 years old, believe it or not I have only realised the meaning (and correct spelling) of the phrase “Kyrie eleison” today……yet I have enjoyed this song immensely every time I have heard it. In mitigation, I am not a catholic, or an anthing for that matter.

A Closer Look at the Lyrics & Meaning Behind Kyrie Eleison by Mr. Mister

In the ordinary of the Mass, “Kyrie Eleison” means, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Mr.Mister blazed a trail of hits for about two or three years in the mid-1980s and then flamed out just as spectacularly. They weren’t a one-hit wonder, but as popular as they were, it’s interesting that they went from back-to-back No. 1 hits with “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie Eleison” to dissolution. The lyrics of the song are, basically, a prayer. And, that is unusual because Richard Page told YouTube personality The Professor of Rock that he didn’t want to proselytize or to be seen as a Christian band. But, another band member “twisted his arm” and got him to sing it. Page said that it just “became a thing.”

Indeed, it did. In fact, the entire album called “Welcome to the Real World” was true “lightning in a bottle.” Three of the band’s songs from that album were released as singles, and all three hit the Top 10. This was akin to the performance of Beatles’ songs in that group’s heyday. The story behind the band’s breakup wasn’t spectacular. MCA wanted to go in a “cool, new direction,” and Page noted that the group, with its chart-topping success, was “too commercial.” They received no promotion at all, and their albums after “Welcome to the Real World” never got better than 29th.

The Lyrical Genius

John Lang was Richard Page’s cousin. He couldn’t play or sing , but he could write. He created the lyrics for both “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie Eleison.” Lang said that he fondly remembered the Episcopalian services he attended while growing up in Phoenix. Lang was the aforementioned “arm twister” who got his cousin on board. And, despite Page’s assertion that Mr. Mister was not a Christian band, he did acknowledge that the song symbolizes spiritual journeys. The song is somewhat ambiguous as a prayerful utterance, but the power of Page’s delivery sells it. Millions of folks who’d never been inside a church were singing ancient Greek words about the Lord having mercy on them.

A Lasting Effect

The song shows up in an eclectic collection of television programs and films. These include disparate titles like “Young Sheldon” and “The X-Files.” Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon must be a fan because he’s used it several times on his show. And, in “The Goldbergs,” the song highlights sexual tension. As far as the films go, it was part of the soundtracks of “The Way Way Back” and “The D Train.”

Kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison Kyrie elei

The wind blows hard against this mountainside Across the sea into my soul It reaches into where I cannot hide Setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old, it holds my memories My body burns a gem-like flame Somewhere between the soul and soft machine Is where I find myself again

Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel Kyrie eleison through the darkness of the night Kyrie eleison where I’m going, will you follow? Kyrie eleison on a highway in the night

When I was young, I thought of growing old Of what my life would mean to me Would I have followed down my chosen road Or only wished what I could be?

Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh

Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel (Kyrie, will you follow?) Kyrie eleison through the darkness of the night (yeah) Kyrie eleison where I’m going, will you follow? (Will you follow?) Kyrie eleison on a highway in the night

Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel Kyrie eleison through the darkness of the night Kyrie eleison where I’m going, will you follow? (Will you follow?) Kyrie eleison on a highway in the light

Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel (Will you follow?) Kyrie eleison through the darkness of the night Kyrie eleison where I’m going, will you follow? (Will you follow?)

Mr. Mister was an American pop rock band most popular in the 1980s. The band's name came from an inside joke about a Weather Report album called Mr. Gone where they referred to each other as "Mister This" or "Mister That", and eventually selected "Mr. Mister." Mr. Mister may be considered as representative of the melodic sound of 1980s pop rock. The band consisted of Richard Page on vocals and bass guitar, Steve George on keyboards, Pat Mastelotto on acoustic and electronic drums and Steve Farris on guitars. more »

the road that i must travel lyrics

Well, I climbed the seven summits and I swam the seven seas But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see Well, I fought in the jungles and I fought in the streets But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see Now, once I had a reason, don't know what it could be And the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see Well, I sang to myself that I want to be free But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see I walked the empty desert and I was burned in the heat But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see Well, I crossed the frozen wasteland in the bitter cold did freeze And the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see And I will knock on every door for I do not have a key And the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see Well, I sang to myself that I want to be free But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see They shot a man in Soho, couldn't guess his age I found his empty journal, I filled up every page I called up my state Senator, they said he wasn't there The secretary took my name and, man, she sounded scared So I counted my misfortunes, I added up the blame I picked through all the garbage, I checked off all the names I read in the newspaper, they'd questioned all my friends They hoped that they could find my ass before I struck again So I sang to myself that I want to be free But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see So when thirsty I will drink and when hungry I will steal But the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see So tonight I walk in anger with worn shoes on my feet And the road I must travel, it's end I cannot see And I will sing to myself that I'm gonna be free But the road I must travel, yeah, it's end I cannot see There's a sign along the highway but it's too dark now to read

  19. Misheard 80s Lyrics: 'Carry A Laser...'

Carrie Ann lays along the road... Carry a raisin down the road... Kill me a lizard down the road... The lyrics of the song are actually " Kyrie Eleison " which is Greek for " Lord, have mercy. " So, it appears that Mr. Mister could have intended the song to be a prayer. Think about that as you watch the video to their #1 hit from 1986.
